I’m sure this has been done before, but like…

As a trans woman, I recently dressed up in a community of people and the way they addressed me completely changed. Like sure people used my name and my pronouns before, but for some reason I never got complimented before that. It was like night and fucking day.

I think I got one brand of compliment beforehand (“Hey, I like your hairclip.”) but when I showed up wearing a dress? Suddenly the compliments weren’t “Your <item> is pretty.” but “You’re so pretty!!” and one guy who said “Um…can I say something? I think you’re beautiful.”

My brain’s reward system lit up like a damn flashlight. That’s one of the most notable times I’ve felt like I was genuinely beautiful.

Where am I going with this?

Call men beautiful. I’ve lived both sides of the coin. Tell men they’re strong or they’re good at what they do or they look great today. I’ve lived both sides of the coin and honestly if more men could get random compliments I think it would do so much.

If you’re not comfortable complimenting strangers, which is completely fair as there is a level of danger involved, at least tell the men with whom you are friends.

Men deserve to think they’re beautiful.

Everybody talks about this but I’m going to say it again. One of the most difficult things as a creator whether that be a writer, an artist, etc is putting your work out there and getting little engagement. Sure, the likes and kudos are nice, it’s great to know that people at least saw what you made. But comments do so much more.

In my opinion, comments are so much more encouraging than likes or kudos even reblogs on here because it means that the creator gets to know they made you feel something. When nobody says anything it feels like time and effort wasted because you don’t know if the work that you’ve done is even good. Without engagement like that it kills the motivation to continue until you motivate yourself to see it through and hope it goes better the next time.

Please, if you like something a creator made let them know. No matter how simple or long the message is, it makes all the difference.
