« The link between irony and quoting resides in the refusal to take responsibility for the authorship, or authority, of the statement one makes.

When Mrs Verdurin wishes to mention noblemen and women without making a mistake regarding their name or title, the solution reported by the narrator is interesting:

"'The Duchess', like Swann says", she added ironically, with a smile which showed that she was only quoting.

Proust likes to emphasise this method of quotation, which consists in distancing oneself from what is being said; a method which the narrator further highlights in the rest of the sentence, by mentioning "the refusal to answer for such a designation."

Quoting classic literature, with or without quotation marks, similarly helps to avoid ridicule while retaining the possibility of introducing it into the text, and can thus preserve what Barthes calls "the good conscience (and bad faith) of parody."

Umberto Eco speaks of "the poetics of the copy, which involves, all at once, irony, disavowal, and reverence." »

I really haven’t really written much lately. Instead, I read. I read love stories where everything falls apart, where every missing pieces fit together in the end, where love wins in the last pages. I read and imagine the scenes and become jealous over fictional situations I wish I could experience. But it also heals my heart a little. So I think that for a little while, I’ll stick on reading, hoping that maybe, soon, I’ll find the right words to write again🩵
