Yes!!!! All toys tried cosplay at some point, but the Smiling Critters and Delight are REALLY into it. Poppy likes taking inspiration from fiction to make more dresses for herself, but sometimes joins in for actual cosplays!

i am a very proud dutch person (not really). and since pokemon doesn't only exist in english, it means it exists in dutch, too. i've watched the entirety of the pokemon series in the dutch dub (aside from journeys, could not bother to watch it) and i have gotten terribly attached to it.

seeing i am a huge contestshipping fanatic, let me spoil you with some funny rambling, facts and that stuff from the dutch dub (from my knowledge). pokemon tv has officially been dropped since march, so i cant really rewatch anything.

(poor) translations in the dub:

in ''pros and con artists'' the english dub drew says it's sweet that may remembers her, but in the dutch dub he quite literally says ''how cute/adorable that you remember my name!'' though it is way much more fun poking. though i am gonna pretend it is differently.

instead of pronouncing drew correctly, several characters tend to say ''droo'' instead of ''drew''. this is because dutch people can't properly pronounce SHIT.

in ''come what may!'' when may asks drew if the given rose is for beautifly, instead of saying ''something like that'', he says ''lets leave it at that''

in ''deceit and assist'' the translations are once again terrible, as in the scene where harley brainwashes may into thinking only using assist would be wise, drew says ''showing one movement'' in dutch instead of ''showing one move'' (as in moves that pokemon learn) in this episode brock also calls beautifly “butterfly”

in ''win, lose, or drew'' instead of may saying ''what a creep.. and you dress weird!'' may is straight to the point and says ''what a mistake (as in he's one).. AND YOU LOOK TERRIBLE!!!!'' harley instead of just saying ''you fell for it hookline and sinker'', he quite literally says, translated literally, ''and you fell for it with wide open eyes, dumb/ugly thing!''

in spontaneous combusken, when may asks drew how many ribbons he has, instead of saying ''what counts,'' he quite literally says ''no idea''.

also in spontaneous combusken, when may assumes drew had sent the letter, drew in the english dub responds ''except that's not mine'' but in the dutch dub he just goes ''that's fun anf all, but it's not mine''

when may and solidad talk about drew, and that they talk about other people's performances, solidad states (in the dutch dub) that when ''they talked about 'negative/foolish' performances, he started talking about her'' ouch.

fun voice actor facts:

harley's dutch voice actor (tony neef) is actually gay.

harley's dutch voice actor also plays professor oak and the pokedex for a short while during the AG series.

harley's dutch voice actor is also an (musical) actor, singer AND songwriter

may's dutch voice actor, nicoline van doorn, is also a singer, but also a sing teacher, apparently.

may's dutch voice actor also plays some beloved characters such as korina in pokemon, amy in sonic boom, and princess cadence in my little pony!!

drew's first and original voice actor, sander van der poel, also voiced goh in the pokemon journey series. I know I said I didn't watch it, but that doesn't mean I've seen NOTHING. he also voiced ira in the precure doki doki dutch dub... he was replaced though after two episodes. dont know why.

drew's second dutch voice actor (who was replaced in advanced challenge), huub dikstaal, is a voice actor, dialogue director and also a translator.

drew's dutch voice actor, huub dikstaal, has also played characters like woody in toystory, aaron (elite 4 from dp), molayne, master gi beon (horizons) and so many background characters i could hear him scream in the dutch dub of precure doki doki.

not so much of a fact, more of a flex, but i actually indirectly know drew's dutch va, huub dikstaal XD one of my supervisors at school (i am kind of incapable of going to school normally at the moment) told me her husband works with voice actors n such. and when I asked her if he'd worked with drew's va before, she immediately was like ''i think, yeah!'' n confirmed it later. so he's a friend of a friend of a friend to me, basically!

i know absolutely nothing about solidad's dutch voice actor beside the fact she played, well, solidad, and hunter J(ay) from dp i have NO CLUE how to spell her name. and a background character in mlp, too. the only other funny thing i'm able to tell is that she voice overed a dutch furniture ad.. or something..

Nah but it's the way every time a story features or is about women or a woman's story, people always want to try to make it about men or say "what if there were men instead?"

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic and Six: the Musical both have parts of their fanbase(although thankfully in Six it's not the majority) saying that there should be a version with all men or going "what if this female main cast had a male main cast instead"? Even though the point of both is to provide representation for women, MLP is about how there's no wrong way to be a girl and changing the way girls'/girly shows are seen as shallow and less good, and giving girls multiple strong female characters to see themselves in instead of just one token/cookie cutter archetype, while Six is all about REAL-LIFE women whose lives were destroyed because of misogyny, it is all about girl power(same as mlp) and women getting to reclaim their stories from a patriarchal society that shortchanged and silenced their voices throughout history, but no let's make it about men lol.

The same is true for Sailor Moon, I have seen some people say that it's sexist or "misandrist"(as if that's even a thing lol) because it's all about women and the women are more powerful and how Tuxedo Mask "always needs to be saved" like goddamn let the girls be the heroes who save the world for once.

And for that matter PRECURE. Unpopular opinion that will surely get my head bitten off by fans but I don't think Precure NEEDS male Cures and it's not "erasing" feminine boys or saying boys can't be feminine or "reinforcing gender roles" to point that out. Precure is a franchise about female characters being the heroes and main characters who are powerful while also being feminine, it's supposed to place the women center stage and give them the spotlight when most media doesn't do that, trying to fit boys in it is just ruining that message imo. Tbh I would be happy if there were no male Cures at all, idgaf about your "but let boys be feminine" shit cuz I mean yeah but like go watch Cute High Earth Defense Club Love or something, that show seems more your speed(@ sexist Precure fans who say this, not you). I once got my comments removed TWICE for trying to point this out to someone, to the point where I just blocked them lol. One person even went so far as to make a petition for Toei Animation to make an all-male Precure season, again, just go watch Cute High, bc clearly that's what you're looking for.

I also saw some people complaining about Project MC^2 being "sexist" against boys and making them out to be stupid just because it's about girls being smart spies and good at math/art/science, one review even said "teach girls that boys matter too!" oh rly like they don't know already??? Like the world doesn't already tell them that each and every single day??????? The second girls get the spotlight everybody acts like boys are being attacked, but when boys get the spotlight it's all crickets and shit bc boys are supposed to take center stage like no one cares about girls getting attention. Your seven-year-old son isn't going to enter a self-hating misandrist crisis because one wee show said "women do run the world!" we still live in a patriarchy ffs.

Also in Cardcaptor Sakura the main character is a girl and the story has many female characters and is very empowering to women in general(while also having a great deal of powerful men and even a canon m/m couple), and yet I still saw this one annoying guy write an entire screed about how Sakura sucks as a character and should never have been Cardcaptor, the cherry on top was them saying that Syaoran should be the Master of the Clow Cards instead...because it's not enough that this show has multiple representations of positive men/masculinity in addition to women/femininity, it's still not good enough if it's a girl power fantasy, it MUST make a boy the hero!

I also saw someone say that Touhou, which has an all-female cast, needs more men. Wonder if they'd say the reverse if it had an all-male cast(correct answer: they wouldn't).

And then there's the Encanto fandom's entire can of worms where they went through that phase of wanting the female-dominated cast to be all about Camilo and Bruno, sidelining the women in the process. Like bruh. 😕

I really do wish that people would stop this shit, female-centric media is really never allowed to exist without people wanting men to be prioritized in it and take away from the female representation even though men have enough representation already lol, people can't handle when not everything is about men. It's why I will never listen to or take anyone seriously when they complain about shows like these being "sexist against men" and say that anything I write is too female-centric. Like. GOOD. The world needs more female-centric casts to shake up the status quo! You guys love complaining about shows being gendered and wanting gender equality in fiction only towards female-centric works, because you don't want to see women playing central roles without men also being there. Sucks to be on the other side of the playing field now, huh?

Anyway, I was inspired to write this to you rather than make it an original post because of your comment about people wanting Jennifer's Body to be about men(with Miguel as Jennifer) and yeah that is so disgusting and irritating. 🤢 I didn't even know that was happening but I'm not surprised because nobody ever lets shows about girls just center girls first and foremost. It truly is everywhere and I'm sick of it. Not everything needs to be about men, just let the women have something. Please.

Brand Integrity - The thing Hasbro struggles with

Okay, let me keep up talking about DnD from a business perspective, though this time the topic is actually even wider and concerns not only DnD but also other franchises that Hasbro has the rights to. Because this is actually a pretty big... thing. It is not even just Hasbro, it is a lot of companies. It is something that technically everyone knows about, but... a lot of people doing the decisions seem to not understand: Brand Integrity.

So, what is Brand Integrity?

Basically it is a business concept or to be more exact, a marketing concept.

We all know that businesses and also franchises and general IPs all have their brand. To take a very simple example: The Brand of Pokémon is "family friendly entertainment with cute monsters". This is, for example, why the entire Palworld thing is so concerning for Nintendo, because Palworld very much immitates the style and look of Pokémon, while the content of the game very much does not fit the brand. From Nintendo's POV stuff like Coromon or Temtem is actually more acceptable, because it still fits the general brand, while Palworld very much doesn't.

But here is the problem that a lot of western companies have in this regard: They actually do not... understand what the core brand is from the perspective of their audience. And hence they will do things that harm their brand integrity, while refusing to do things that would actually not harm their brand integrity but could make them more money.

Causa: My little Pony

To keep at Hasbro, let us talk about My little Pony, because from a business point of view this was very amusing. So, we all remember when a couple of years ago (let's not talk about how many, because I am gonna feel OLD) My little Pony: Friendship is Magic released, right? And we all remember, how that show surprisingly found an audience outside of the intended audience of little girls, right? That audience being adults, often adult men.

And this made Hasbro quite nervous about the brand integrity. And I will fully agree with them, that this nervousness was not entirely without a cause. Because, yeah, some of the bullshit that happened within the Brony fandom were definitely harmful towards the brand integrity. Especially those things that made a big splash outside the fandom. And also stuff like... Look, I am not going to kinkshame anyone. But if you do an all age convention, maybe not allow nsfw fanarts and body pillows be displayed openly in artist alley, when there are actually visitors there who might be underage kids?

But let me talk about the thing that Hasbro then did, that I consider quite stupid: They did not market towards the bronies at all. Instead acting as if the bronies did not exist.

And that was... kinda stupid. Like, they actually could have made money if they had released some better quality and more expensive figurines and things like that. One of the big things that Bandai did with PreCure in Japan was exactly that: They realized that they had a massive audience outside of the core audience of little girls and hence released merchandise specifically for that audience. But Hasbro? Hasbro didn't, because they were quite afraid that including stuff for the Bronies would harm their brand identity.

Causa: Magic the Gathering

Now, I am not a Magic player, and Magic does a lot better than pretty much any other IP that Hasbro holds. And I am absolutely going to argue that the fact that the creative director is someone who was involved with Magic for decades absolutely plays into this. Because at least he seems to understand the actual brand.

We can absolutely argue about whether all the franchise tie ins Magic has been doing in recent years did harm the Brand Integrity - from what I gather voices among the fans do argue about that a lot. But I think something that you absolutely cannot argue about is one thing: AI absolutely did harm the Brand Integrity.

And yes, this is already foreshadowing on the DnD stuff, but let's talk about Magic first. Because if you have been following Magic News at all, you might have heard about this. How they tried to use AI in their products - and then were all Surprised Pikachu, when their audience went like: "Hell No!"

On this front I have to admit... I am not sure what Hasbro and WotC actually think the brand of Magic is. Because frankly, if they did not realize that the great artwork and detail in storytelling through the cards was not part of the brand, I honestly think they are not doing their job.

And yes, that brings us to...

Causa: Dungeons & Dragons

Even before I started to obsess about DnD last year, I actually followed this aspect for a while from a purely "professional" Point of VIew, as it was quite interesting to see how this played out. And here I actually have a good understand what the Brand that WotC thinks they are selling is: "A core ttrpg fantasy experience for the whole family."

Ever since the start of 5e they really went in hard for that one. And don't get me wrong, I think some of the stuff they did was really good. That is stuff like working with sensitivity advisors to remove things like racism, misogyny and queermisia from the rules and the official worldbuilding. And this is very good and very laudible, because it did open up the franchise to a lot more people, who felt alienated by the way the franchise had been handled before.

The thing where they kinda misstepped though, was by generally scrubbing it so clean to make it very kid friendly. Older editions of DnD did have some sexual stuff in there, which 5e did away with entirely in fear that it might harm the new brand integrity.

The bigger point where they stumbled however was in misunderstanding a core part of the brand: The community aspect of it. That is how much of it has to do with homebrew, with community, with creating the game together. And they doubly did not understand it. Which showed in both the thing with the OGL - and the aspect of AI art.

Let's be clear: Nothing that Hasbro/WotC could have done would have been able to harm their brand integrity as much as the entire OGL disaster last year. Because this exchange between players was always a core aspect of the brand as the players understood it.

Them trying to take that away is, what pushed a lot of players to other ttrpg systems and loose confidence in the brand.

And they then trying to replace some art with AI didn't help. As like in Magic, the brand - as the players understood - absolutely involved the great quality art.

What they need to learn

Something that western companies really do need to learn is, that you as a company actually have only so much influence on what your brand actually is. The fandom will define part of it. And if you try to define it against what the fandom actually thinks, it will harm your brand more than anything.

It is kinda funny to me, because I always have the comparison to Toei/Bandai, who ended up embracing the brand as understood by the fandoms.

I mean, heck. Digimon is a great example. Digimon was not profitable for the longest time - until they gave the fandom, what the fandom wanted. Instead of marketing Digimon exclusively to primary schoolers, they included the adult fandom.

This does not mean do everything to the audience's whimps. But... It really helps to listen to how your actual audience understands your brand.

I don't often watch many series or movies. But there's a special place in my heart for Invader Zim, The Owl House, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Eddsworld and My Little Pony. I'm also super excited for the new Scott Pilgrim show :D

It's strange to say but I have a keen interest in reality shows. This means Gogglebox, Come Dine with Me, Four in a Bed, Kitchen Nightmares (both versions) and Impractical Jokers. Only the lord knows why. I think it's the autism. It's probably the autism.

I'm a fan of Pretty Cure aswell! Those girls are so beegitful <3 in those dresses... Yes I found out about it through Glitter Force but that doesn't change anything. Another anime I also love is Pop Team Epic that show irreversibly changed my sense in humour. I've been getting into MHA and Chainsaw Man aswell.

I also adore!!! Vocaloid it literally makes up 50% of my music taste. I black out and wake up with 20 new pieces of miku merch lmao

I have a lot of different music interests! But my all time favourite band ever is Qbomb! I adoreeeee them to infinity. I literally don't know what my favourite Qbomb song is because they're all so good.

But! Qbomb doesn't have my fav song, that honour goes to Stacked Like Pancakes and their song SFDD. It's a really high energy ska song that I recommend highly. (You won't regret listening to it!)

Seren's Studies: Tiny Time Travel And What It Takes From Odd Squad

I didn't think I'd have to write two "Odd Squad knockoff???" essays within the span of a month. But lo and behold, an announcement came, left like a Black Friday sale, and then got extended as it was heavily promoted by PBS Kids up the wazoo.

I talk, of course, about their newest short-form series, Tiny Time Travel.

You might be wondering, "Okay, I can see one resemblance to Odd Squad...but is that really enough to compare it to a decade-old franchise?" And oh. Ohhh! I would say NAY. N A Y .

Because I've seen all the episodes of it. And I'm about to lay everything down on the line when it comes to how it's Odd Squad's adopted child.

Not a knockoff, mind you. This isn't Fear and Loathing in Wordsville 2: Electric Boogaloo.

Below the break. Chop chop. Time can only keep moving forward in the real world, sadly.

Let's start with a rundown for the uninitiated, because I guarantee hardly any of you have heard of this series.

Tiny Time Travel is a short-form series created by Tim McKeon, most famous for being a co-creator of Odd Squad. Unlike Odd Squad, it's under the banners of Marobru Productions, a prodco based in New York, and Easy as Pie Productions, a prodco based in Georgia. (Tim had his own prodco in the form of Hundredth Town Productions, along with Adam Peltzman, the other co-creator of Odd Squad. He doesn't own EAPP.) The series consists of 12 episodes, with no further seasons planned.

As for the premise...see if this rings a bell, hmm?

We have two 11-year-old boys, Tyler and Tony, the former of who invents a time machine that can send them both back and forward only a few hours at a time in order to help people in their town.

You see? All it took was the one whole entire sentence and the one whole entire screencap.

The Odd Squad episode "6:00 to 6:05" was, to absolutely no one's surprise, written by Tim McKeon. Much like Tyler and Tony's time-traveling tales, it involves Olive and Otto using Oscar's Before-Now-Machine to travel backwards by 5 minutes from 6:05 PM to 6:00 PM in order to stop dinosaurs from breaking out of their room and destroying what has to be Oprah's 1,000th Headquarters.

While the tale of Tiny Time Travel runs much deeper than an episode they copied the formula from, it's safe to say that Tim likely looked at this episode for inspiration for the series, among others. Odd Squad is more abundant with time travel than Precure is with kaijus, having several episodes about it and at least one movie. Really, if you're a writer in the TV industry, it's hard to get to a point where any ideas based around a concept you love that are posed in a writers' room are shut down on sight. Tim managed to do that single-handedly and still flipped the bird as a creator by inserting time travel as a solution in the Season 3 finale. In the industry, they call that abuse of power. In the Odd Squad branch, they call that "bending the rules just this one time".

The episodes of Tiny Time Travel range greatly in terms of plot, because each episode focuses on a different client person that Tyler and Tony help. And I use the term "plot" very loosely, because while My Little Pony: Tell Your Tale can stuff lore into 5 minutes (to...varying degrees of success), Tiny Time Travel...doesn't. It's not as lore-filled as Odd Squad and isn't even half as crazy because it's purely episodic. About the craziest thing I've seen is the neurodivergent and Hmong rep, and after watching Jelly, Ben and Pogo, that surprises me next to none. (And Odd Squad, because it's got rep up and down both streets.)

There's also the matter of differing morals. While Odd Squad teaches about mathematics, and later STEM stuff, Tiny Time Travel teaches more about social language and language in general, in a way that isn't really as seamless as Odd Squad. When creating Odd Squad, there was intent to hide the lessons so kids can watch the show and not have the math be in-your-face and up-your-butt. Tiny Time Travel is far more in-your-face and up-your-butt about the lessons by a complete longshot, which I personally can't really fault it for because 5 minutes can only get you so far. (If anything, I'll fault PBS execs, because that method of delivering morals has been standard since the 90s. But I digress. I can spew about PBS later.)

So I might as well address the elephant in the room: is Tiny Time Travel an Odd Squad knockoff?

Short answer: no.

There's a lot of Odd Squad influence within it, in terms of humor, characters (Samira reminds me a hell of a lot of Polly Graph, and that's not even getting into the alliterative naming of the two protags) and general vibe, which is quite common with two pieces of media that share a creator. I'd also throw in that it's made in, and features, New York as a setting, which is where the Odd Squad pilot takes place, but that's a little irrelevant.

However, it's important to note that "inspired by" and "ripping off" are two very distinct things.

Take Wordsville, just as an example. Which I'm bringing up because, y'know, Odd Squad has more knockoffs than I've had good nights of sleep, but anyway. Wordsville is, as discussed before, a complete bonafide knockoff. It bounds over "inspired by" and goes straight into "I wanna watch you bleed!" territory by basically being Odd Squad but with a coat of literacy and digitization on it. Tiny Time Travel, by contrast, has very few straight similarities to Odd Squad. There's the alliterative names of Tyler and Tony, the inclusion of time travel (with limitations), similar music (thanks to Paul Buckley coming back on board), and a specific brand of humor that is pulled off well. But they are very few and far between, and there are far more differences. Tim looked to Odd Squad for inspiration, but he didn't seek to create a whole entire ripoff of Odd Squad. (Knowing PBS, though...maybe an Odd Squad ripoff was what they wanted originally. Wouldn't be the first time network execs made a request to Tim only for him to find a compromise.)

Likewise, another thing that sets Triple-T apart is how it was made. You're gonna wanna sit down for this one if you aren't sittin' already, because the amount of irony could probably level the planet.

If you're one of the old-timers of the Odd Squad fandom who qualifies for a senior's discount and Medicare, you're probably well-aware of Tim McKeon's absolute adoration for time travel, something that leaks into Odd Squad just as much as it leaks into his personal media preferences. Like I said, the franchise has had a ton of time-travel-related material, so much so that any ideas involving it were barred from the writers' room. All of it pretty much came from Tim McKeon's love of the concept. (And his love of pies. That too. Though whether that came from the prodco or from Tim himself remains up in the air. And yes, Triple-T does mention pie in one episode. And toast, believe it or not!)

Tiny Time Travel is basically what would happen if Tim flipped both birds at whatever writer bopped him with a newspaper and said "no more time travel episodes", and he made an entire series out of it with both government money and our money. It's like if you had a fanseries idea, money, enough passion, money, good connections, and money, and you turned it into a show. That's what Tiny Time Travel is. It's purely, unequivocally, a passion project for Tim.

Of course, there's also the underlying, less moral side to its making, in that it was made in order to fill a quota of PBS to get at least 25 new shows out by end of year. But this is one of the ones that's definitely filled with more quality. Let's be honest, the question of "am I gonna grow up to be a rebel leader and save humanity" is not something you'd find in typical PBS Kids fare. (And it also somehow passed S&P. But Odd Squad has over 70 questionable moments in the series alone -- and yes, I've counted -- so it's clear the rules of S&P don't apply to the god that is Tim McKeon. He flips the bird at that too.)

So overall, Tiny Time Travel is one hell of a short-form series. City Island threw me for a loop a couple years back based on the object show comparisons alone (and when you get Adam Katz himself to recognize that shit, you're nigh-unstoppable), and this series threw me for a loop similarly just due to the sheer premise and near-immaculate quality.

Odd Squad was, on all accounts, a major influence in Triple-T's making, to such an extent where there's a cameo of two agents walking in the background that someone managed to spot long before I got to the "Tennis Talk" episode that featured the cameo to begin with. The show's cute, it's sweet, it's got hella good rep, and it's short enough to please attention spans around the world. (Or at least in 'Murica. And maybe some parts of Canada.) It wholeheartedly has the Seren seal of approval, and if you're tired of waiting for Odd Squad UK in 8 months like I am, this will tide you over in the meantime.

As for whether it'll get a Season 2...after "Surprise Party", I can't see that happening. Unlike with Odd Squad, which is constantly under the threat of cancellation, Tim had a chance to end the show on his own terms without PBS giving it the sharpest axe in the shed, and he wrapped it up beautifully. It doesn't need a second season. It's beautiful as it is. Keep it as a one-hit wonder. (And preserve it, because otherwise it'll become lost media by the time half the century is up.)
