beloved show/movie rec (whumpy or otherwise)
Limitless (2015) is one of my favorite and most re-watched shows! Which isn't that much of an accomplishment as it's only a single season haha, but it is SO good. Good humor, a touch of angst, occasional whump (but with lots of potential for so much more), and I love pretty much all of the characters! Plus the dynamic between Brian and Rebecca is PHENOMENAL. There are a lot of shows from the mid-2000s to the mid-2010s that have a similar thing going (eccentric, goofy, lovable man with unusual skills paired with a female law enforcement officer that has to keep him in line) but this is by far my favorite. They let Rebecca be a bit goofy as well, and she's just great! And their relationship is entirely platonic! :D Plus they took one of the movie's biggest weaknesses (having a protagonist that is kind of unlikable) and turn it into a strength (putting him into a more antagonistic role) and fixed a weird plot hole. Anyway, I adore it and am so so sad it only lasted a season, and that the fandom is pretty small. It's super underrated. Everyone should go watch it!

Thank you for the ask! I hope you don't mind this long-winded answer hahaha

I’ll Spock the world and meld with you, Pt 1
By Ames
Tumblr media
My mind to your mind. My thoughts to your thoughts. Your dirty, dirty thoughts. Sometimes a mind meld in Star Trek is a clever technique to advance the plot in a sci-fi way. Sometimes, it’s just a way to cop out of a scene when the writers have written themselves into a corner. And other times it’s straight up intrusive and horrifying because no one should have the power to read another person’s mind without their consent!
The A Star to Steer Her By hosts are going through all the mind meld scenes and collecting our thoughts on each one. First up: all the mind melds from The Original Series through the TOS films. So brace yourself for mostly seeing Spock (but somehow not entirely Spock!) touching a lot of people’s faces, random walls, and sometimes just the air around him to cognitively connect with whatever he damn well pleases. The list is longer than I intended since Spock is a bit of a meld slut, so check them all out below and telepathically listen to our chatter (jump to 45:43) over on the podcast. Back to those dirty, dirty thoughts…
[Images © CBS/Paramount]
Tumblr media
“Dagger of the Mind” The very first mind meld we see comes pretty early in the release of season one of The Original Series, and it was all a way for the Enterprise crew to figure out what the hell was going on with that lunatic Simon Van Gelder without resorting to bunkum science like hypnosis. Cue Spock pulling some crazy faces throughout an agonizingly long scene to determine that Dr. Adams used the neural neutralizer on Van Gelder and is not to be trusted. Good job advancing the plot and introducing a Vulcan superpower we’ll use over and over and over again!
Tumblr media
“A Taste of Armageddon” The next use we see later in the season already makes the whole idea of the mind meld so laughable as to be worthy of ridicule. The crew has been locked up by Eminiarians, as is their wont, and Spock uses a sort of long-distance, touch-free variant of the mind meld on one of the guards on the other side of a wall. Wow, it didn’t take the writers long to buff Spock’s magic powers to allow him to save the day by essentially mind controlling some bloke.
Tumblr media
“The Devil in the Dark” We’ve got to commend Leonard Nimoy for some mesmerizing acting when Spock mind melds with the Horta in “The Devil in the Dark.” It’s over-the-top in all the right ways. Watching him feeling the pain of the silicon-based lifeform is haunting. What a great way to humanize a being that is probably among the furthest biologically from humans in the show. This is what science fiction is really for. Plus it opens up Spock’s magic powers to even more different lifeforms!
Tumblr media
“The Changeling” Speaking of Spock using his powers on lifeforms that are further and further from the humanoids we’re accustomed to: we’ve got Spock mind melding with Nomad in “The Changeling.” So now Spock can mind meld with people he’s touching, people on the other sides of walls, aliens that look like a big afghan blanket, and even random robots whose sentience is questionable from the start. What can’t this man mind meld with? Things are getting out of control.
Tumblr media
“Mirror, Mirror” Finally, our first instance of someone other than Spock melding with a person. It’s… Mirror Spock! Which still counts! This time, that pointy-eared hobgoblin is intruding on McCoy’s thoughts in order to learn the truth behind the origins of the prime-universe crew. And it just makes us wonder why we don’t use the Vulcan mind meld in courtroom scenes or any time we need to learn if someone is lying or not. This superpower is so overpowered that it could solve most TOS plots lickety-split!
Tumblr media
“Patterns of Force” That’s just how they use it in “Patterns of Force” when Spock mind melds a mostly catatonic John Gill to learn why the actual hell he would bring Nazism to the Ekosians in the first place. And it introduced an actual limitation to the mind meld for a change! Apparently this power isn’t limitless. Gill has been tranqed so hard that the best Spock can do is allow Gill to answer direct questions asked of him. So play 20 Questions with this guy, and you’ll be all set.
Tumblr media
“By Any Other Name” Remember how Spock once mind melded a guy through a wall? We just talked about it a moment ago. Well the writers remembered too because it comes up again when the Kelvins have the crew confined to some cave or other, and it’s almost the exact same scene we got in “At Taste of Armageddon.” Spock tries to mentally influence Kelinda through the rock wall; it’s unclear if she takes the bait or just wants to punish them for trying, but the result is the same.
Tumblr media
“The Paradise Syndrome” It’s overacting all around in this use of the mind meld on Kirok, the persona that Kirk has taken on while on Amerind. Spock needs to restore Kirk’s memory and decides the quickest way to do that is go in there and defrag it himself. This meld thing really is a Swiss Army knife, and is probably used way more often than most people even open one of those tools. Are we at the point at which the whole concept of the mind meld is just an escape button from an episode? Guys, we’re not even halfway through this list…
Tumblr media
“Is There in Truth No Beauty?” We’ve got a twofer of mind melds in one of my personal faves, “Is There in Truth No Beauty?” and our very first example of someone other than Nimoy performing it. So first we get Spock mind melding with the Medusan, Kollos, in order to merge consciousnesses, I guess? It’s close to a body possession, but Spock is still in there. It’s just that now he and Kollos together have the navigation capabilities to save the ship from doom.
Tumblr media
And then Miranda Jones proves to us that humans can master the discipline as well if they are well trained. Sure, Vulcans get a new superpower every week it seems, but this is one that Dr. Jones picked up through years of schooling on Vulcan, and she uses it to save Spock from madness. And then presumably she lives happily ever after with Kollos, my biggest ship of the franchise.
Tumblr media
“Spectre of the Gun” Get ready for the rarely seen triple mind meld, courtesy of the absurd western episode “Spectre of the Gun.” Considering at the beginning of TOS, Spock claims he’s never mind melded a human before (something Discovery blatantly retconned), by this point in season three, he’s melding Kirk, McCoy, and Scott in rapid succession to make their minds more pliant so that they’ll believe the bullets from the gunfight at the OK Corral will go through them. It’s a weird one, y’all.
Tumblr media
“Requiem for Methuselah” Almost through the live action show now, and we’ve reached what we’ve called both one of Spock’s worst moments and one of the worst uses of a memory wipe on the show. It’s just plain messed up that Spock would remove Kirk’s memories of Rayna, the robot he fell in love with, because he does it without Kirk’s consent. Bones joshes that Spock will never understand love and comments that he wishes the captain could forget… and Spock makes the captain forget! Because Bones was razzing him! Not cool!
Tumblr media
“Turnabout Intruder” Our last instance from the run of The Original Series comes from the last episode from the run of The Original Series. That’s when Spock mind melds with Kirk, who happens to be in Janice Lester’s body, to confirm that the two have body swapped. So it’s another lie detector use—further proof that this technique really can solve most conflicts in episodes. That is, if people trust the Vulcan performing it, which Janice Lester, who happens to be in Kirk’s body, emphatically does not.
Tumblr media
“One of Our Planets Is Missing” We’ve made it to The Animated Series, and there are more Spock mind melds to cover! Do I have a soft spot for “One of Our Planets Is Missing” because it’s similar to some unrelated fanfic I wrote for the podcast? You bet I do! Both feature Spock mind melding with a sentient cloud while the ship is inside of it, which I’d say is stretching the capacity for mind melds except for the fact that he’s already done much weirder things, so whatever.
Tumblr media
“The Infinite Vulcan” The other instance of a mind meld we get in The Animated Series is the rare Spock-on-Spock meld in “The Infinite Vulcan.” For absolutely no reason except that it would look funny animated (which was shockingly something Filmation had the capacity to do in their very cheap box of tricks), the clone of Spock is fifty feet tall. Spock 2 needs to save original Spock from something or other, and a mind meld via just a massive fingertip to the noggin does the trick.
Tumblr media
The Motion Picture Whatever the hell V’Ger is by the time the crew enters it in The Motion Picture, you can bet your ass Spock can mind meld with it. It’s somewhere between cloud, robot, and giant floating Ilia, and Spock is fully committed to putting his hands all over that puppy and figuring out its deal. He doesn’t even have permission to go investigate this thing. My dude just wanders in unannounced to get into that delicious brain, that’s how nuts Spock is at this point.
Tumblr media
The Wrath of Khan This afterthought of a scene ended up being so consequential going forward. To pave the way for bringing Spock back to life after his beautiful sacrifice, a scene of Spock using a mind meld to dump his katra into McCoy was added. We at the podcast are still mixed about how necessary this was since we’re also very mixed on the ensuing movie as a whole, but it’s also nice to have Spock back. And it allows for some excellent DeForest Kelley acting in the third film. But it undoes a poignant death scene. So torn!
Tumblr media
The Search for Spock Speaking of the movie we’re so torn on, The Search for Spock has some mind melds of its own. We get our first mind meld from Sarek when he comes looking for Spock’s katra and assumes it’s in Kirk. Why he didn’t ask what he was looking for first, we can’t say, but it is totally in Sarek’s character to just stride in and do whatever without explaining himself.
Tumblr media
Toward the end of the movie, after we’ve done all the prerequisite searching for Spock, we get a scene at Mount Seleya where the Vulcan priestess T’Lar performs the fal-tor-pan ceremony on McCoy and the newly resurrected Spock, which includes something akin to a mind meld to move the katra over like cut-pasting a file from your My Documents folder.
Tumblr media
The Voyage Home The movies really do have a good selection of mind melds to go around, with almost all of the TOS films having the Vulcan power represented. The Voyage Home’s mind meld of choice is on the humpback whales, George and Gracie, when Spock is trying to communicate the plan to the massive Cetacea. It’s absolutely batshit that Spock claims he’s succeeded in conveying to the whales what the plan is and that they’re onboard. Somehow the thing that makes the most sense is Spock learning that Gracie is pregnant.
Tumblr media
The Undiscovered Country Our final mind meld for this week is also the most horrifying. Like the squicky mind wipe in “Requiem for Methuselah,” it’s another of Spock’s real low points as a character. Using the mind meld as a weapon to force information from Valeris in The Undiscovered Country really feels like the antithesis of what the practice was contrived for originally. We’ve come a long way since “Dagger of the Mind,” when melding was established so they wouldn’t have to show Spock doing something problematic, like hypnotizing Van Gelder, and now at the end of the movies, it’s even more problematic than that. Heckin’ yikes.
When I snap my fingers, you’ll subscribe to this space for more blogtiviities! We’ve got more mind melds to discuss from the other Trek series, and you don’t want to miss those! You also don’t want to miss more Star Trek: Discovery coverage as we watch through the whole thing over on SoundCloud or wherever you get your podcasts. You also don’t want to skip out on friending us on Facebook and BlueSky. Snap!

DEAR MOOTS PLEASE IT'S SUCH A GOOD SHOW,
it's been like 8? years since it aired, but like...
so good.
if you liked Hannibal, psych, limitless the movie, or just like any sorta vaguely sci-fi but still base in reality sorta shows this is for you!
(it ends on a MASSIVE cliffhanger, all the shows I like end off cliffhangers you just have to smile through the pain.)
Tumblr media
it's like one of our favourite shows, it's absolutely heartbreaking it never got a season 2.
IT'S SO GOOOOOOODDDDD
GUYS
okay so there’s this show
it’s called limitless
(yes, it’s related to the movie that came out some years ago. ive heard the show is way better and ive never personally seen the movie - EDIT: it’s related as in it’s the same concept, but you don’t need to see the movie to watch the show. like i said, i haven’t, and i don’t think the plots relate at all)
and im pretty sure everyone who follows me would like it
its premise is there’s this mind altering drug that enhances your entire cognition and this super normal guy takes it and starts working with the fbi. there’s more to the plot, but to avoid any spoilers im not gonna tell you.
lemme run down some points
HILARIOUS
seriously like this shit is fucking funny and not overused humor
GREAT characters, developed, fleshed out, original
NO EXCESSIVE DRAMA actually like almost no drama at all like every interpersonal conflict is 100% reasonable and in character and doesn’t exist just to increase tension
amazing relationships between characters, meaningful, genuine, just. good shit.
nails the balance of humor and seriousness
emotional and intelligent at the same time in again, a PERFECT balance
intricate and intriguing plots without being so confusing that you just get annoyed, plots that encourage speculation but is almost never predictable and keeps you on the edge of your seat without being frustrating. like 1000/10 pacing
did i mention it’s hilarious
seriously one time the main character is doing something boring so he says “here, lemme show you some vines of cats” and there’s vines of cats playing for like twenty seconds
memey humor, and not embarrassing, it’s like actually funny
plot is HELLA dude like i cannot emphasize that enough
main guy is amazing like i love him so much i cannot explain
its presentation of its content is fantastic. there are so many little effects that just make it, and they often show thing in unique ways, like one guy’s entire backstory in comic book form
some specific things of note for those that care about these things
-minimal sexual content, both actions and dialogue. characters are sexually active sometimes, but it’s few and it’s not the focus, and it’s not shown  -one of the main characters is a badass and intelligent woman that takes no shit she’s amazing and is definitely a strong female CHARACTER not a strong FEMALE character. faceted and developed and amazing -none of the characters make identity in any way an issue at all (except for one tiny joke that was something like “and he- or she, sorry rebecca”) and it’s really refreshing -they don’t make hateful jokes  -reminiscent of galavant, in particular for you @potterlockianegalitarian928 -beautiful platonic relationship that is close and good
seriously guys, just…go watch it. you gotta go watch it.
ALSO
it was canceled for a second season, BUT!!!!!!!!
netflix owns the rights, and it’s had a huge surge in popularity and netflix MAY do a second season for it, and increasing viewers (and good star ratings and good reviews) will help with that.
so please go watch this show
——-
i already tagged potterlockianegalitarian928 cause i think they would like this, but i also think @jarvis-in-the-tardis and @blackoutcatharsis and @strangeplainjane would also like it. basically out to all my mutuals (just thought since i specifically tagged one person i should tag some more)

Mark Sumner at Daily Kos:
For the past week, Elon Musk has repeatedly commented about buying MSNBC. At the same time, Musk accused the news outlet of peddling "puerile propaganda" and derided MSNBC's ratings, which have—as might be expected—dropped since the election. The result has been a string of comments on Twitter and Fox News in which Trump supporters chortle over the thought of replacing Rachel Maddow with Joe Rogan and exult in the distress they believe Musk's comments must be generating on the left. Many of Musk's "jokes," and those of toadies like Rogan, have been accompanied by the kind of homophobic, racist, or misogynist memes that have come to dominate Twitter since Musk laid down $44 billion to destroy that platform. But even as Musk and his social media pals laugh, no one should consider this a farce. It's a threat. And it's not just a threat against MSNBC. Musk is signaling that he has the limitless resources and unchecked power to purchase and shutter any outlet he believes represents a threat to Donald Trump or the incoming array of kleptocrats. He can not only silence perceived critics, he can do it on a whim.
What Musk is suggesting is known as "media capture," and it's a common practice among authoritarian governments everywhere. Whether it's a long series of Russian journalists falling from windows, or Victor Orbán building a media empire that controls every scrap of news reaching the citizens of Hungary, a hallmark of authoritarian governments is that they do not tolerate independent reporting. One of the first and most obvious messages to emerge in the wake of the election earlier this month was just how uninformed and misinformed many American voters already are. In post-election interviews, many voters falsely attributed policies advocated by Kamala Harris to Trump. The policies that Trump actually ran on, from inflationary tariffs to mass deportations to the destruction of the legal system, were either missed altogether or dismissed as inconsequential political rhetoric. The reason for that is simple enough: While the right has an effective media force at every level, America has no progressive media.
When people are in their cars, radio pundits push a constant stream of fearmongering and hatred. Rush Limbaugh may have been one of the first of these toxic voices in America's ear, but he's the soul of moderation compared to many that now fill the airwaves. When people are in their homes, right-wing propaganda is always available. It's not just Fox News, Newsmax, Real America's Voice, Right Side Broadcasting Network, and One America News Network. It's The 700 Club, Great American Family, and dozens of syndicated pundits. In many cases, these pundits pop up during news programs that are nominally on NBC, ABC, or CBS stations as right-wing owners like Sinclair Broadcasting insert commentary into what are supposedly factual news programs.
When people are waiting for their tires to be changed, their teeth to be cleaned, or their meal to be prepared, there's a good chance that if there's any news programming available at all, it's a right-wing broadcast backing Trump, sowing suspicion about "others," and offering up good old American solutions couched in racism and violence. On the left, there is effectively no alternative. Some late-night comedians are willing to take Trump on, and a handful of cable programs mingle comedy with a dose of news content. However, there is no progressive news platform in the United States. Trump supporters may be quick to deride the traditional "big three" outlets, PBS, MSNBC, CNN, The New York Times, and The Washington Post as if they are all the products of Karl Marx, but all of these outlets—with the exceptions of a few programs of commentary and a scattering of editorial columns—still hold to a broken concept of "balanced" coverage, even when that means leaving lies unchallenged. If anything these outlets skew distinctly right just because they are so concerned about being seen as favoring the left. Over the last decade the extent to which these outlets have bent over backward to avoid being critical of the right, while joyfully leaping on any perceived weakness of the left, has become startlingly obvious.
[...]
Here are a few random imaginary headlines that don't require more than a dime-store crystal ball.
Fox News and Newsmax exclusively allowed on military bases
White House press conferences remove journalists under investigation for "treason"
FCC moves to award Starlink nationwide contract for providing rural broadband, declares it will save billions
CNN goes dark following dispute with regulators
Congress opens investigation into censorship on BlueSky as FCC passes new rules against blocking or banning users
U.S. government agencies to use only social media platforms certified "free"
Congress insists that Sesame Street include more Christian content
None of these things have happened. Don't think for a moment that they can't. Or won't. The best move for any of the outlets not already firmly captured by the right is simply this: Report clearly. Stop trying to be fair to people who have no interest in being fair, or honest, or anything less than hateful. America needs an opposition media. It needs one quickly. Unfortunately, there are no signs of that opposition emerging. Musk may be threatening to buy MSNBC, but in the meantime, the remainder of the media is signaling that they don't need to be captured — because they are willing to capitulate.
Mark Sumner wrote on Daily Kos that the Hungarian-style media capture of outlets perceived as not 100% deferential to MAGA propaganda to turn them into megaphones of distortions as a result of Donald Trump's 2nd win is an attack on the freedoms we cherish.

Cruel Universe #4 by Matt Kindt, Matt Bors, Ben H. Winters, Cecil Castellucci, Alison Sampson, Kano, Daniel Irizarri and more. Cover by Greg Smallwood. Variant covers by (2) Kano and (3) Jay Stephens. Out in November.
"Only human arrogance would lead us to believe that we are alone in this vast universe. The real question is, who will find us first? Allies to help us grow and flourish as members of larger cosmic society? Or others who would use up the earth for its resources, enslave the human race, and destroy everything we know and love? Do we live in a limitless realm of possibilities, or a deep dark Cruel Universe? Cozy thoughts, aren't they? While you ponder those questions, you'll find no comfort in the pages of our latest cruel offering... featuring the astronomical talents of EC veterans Matt Kindt (BRZRKR, Mind MGMT) and Ben H. Winters (CBS' Tracker), while welcoming newcomers Cecil Castellucci (Shade the Changing Girl) and Matt Bors (Toxic Avenger) to the void... Their harsh words are brought to terrible fruition by artists Alison Sampson (Hit-Girl), Kano (Gotham Central), and more!"

Whumptober #11
xxx all the lights going dark and my hope’s destroyed
Brian probably should have known better than to continue the investigation after hours by himself. His hunch had been right; detective Will Coulby of the NYPD is, in fact, corrupt. Unfortunately for Brian, he isn’t the only one. Which is how Brian ended up here (wherever here is), with no phone, bleeding in the trunk of a car.
On the bright side (if there is such a thing in situations like this), he’s pretty sure he’s got some time until he bleeds to death. The bullet had hit him on the outside of his left shoulder. If it had gotten an artery, he’d be dead by now, so assuming Coulby and his buddies don’t come to finish the job he probably has a while, right? When he doesn’t show up for work tomorrow, they'll come looking and everything will be fine. In the meantime, he’s just going to close his eyes and try not to panic…
“Open your eyes.”
Rebecca’s voice startles him and he jumps, grimacing at the pain in his shoulder.
“Ouch. You startled me.”
“You startled you,” Rebecca corrects. “I’m you, remember?”
“Yeah, whatever…Look, it’s gonna be fine, okay?” Brian forces a smile. “You’ll find me.”
Rebecca gets a sympathetic look on her face. “No one will find you, Brian. Not before it’s too late. You know that, right?”
Brian swallows, trying to ignore the creeping urgency that’s starting to build in the back of his mind. “Well he took my phone and this is an old car. There’s no trunk release-thingy. I don’t really have any choice but to wait and hope, right?”
“Wrong,” Rebecca says firmly. “Come on, Brian, think!”
Brian groans. “What am I supposed to do? There’s no way I’m going to get the trunk open.”
“Then maybe you should try something else.”
“Try something else,” Brian murmurs. “What am I gonna do, go through the back seat?”
Rebecca smiles. “There’s an idea.”
“That isn’t gonna work.”
“Well, you have to try, Brian.”
“You’re right.” Brian sighs. “Ugh, you’re right.”
It takes some doing, not to mention the pain almost makes him black out, but he manages to shift onto his left side, planting his feet against the back of the backseat. And then he kicks. And he kicks again, and he’s pretty sure it’s not actually going to accomplish anything but he’s desperate so he kicks again, and again, and he yells and he kicks and--
And it works. It actually works. The seat falls forward and he lets out a cry that’s equal parts excitement and relief. He scrambles through the small opening, then tugs at the door handle. There’s a brief moment of panic before he realizes that the door is locked, a fact which he quickly remedies. And then the door is open and he’s stumbling out onto the cold, wet pavement. He lands hard on his hands and knees, letting out a sharp grunt as pain radiates through his shoulder. He sits up, clutching at the wound with his right hand. Blood leaks lazily between his fingers.
“You’ve got to keep moving,” Rebecca says behind him.
Brian nods. “Yeah. ‘m just gonna…catch my breath here for a second…”
He looks up, taking in his surroundings. He’s on a dock somewhere. There’s some sort of abandoned building behind him, and he can see the lights of the city in the distance. It’s starting to rain. It’s just a drizzle, but he knows it won’t take long before the cold wet is seeping through his clothes. He takes a deep breath, then forces himself to stand. A wave of dizziness passes over him and he sways a little on his feet. He takes a deep breath, waits for the feeling to pass. And then he starts walking.
xxx
He’s barely standing by the time he reaches the little bodega. A little bell rings as he stumbles inside. There’s a man stocking shelves at the front near the counter, and he doesn’t look up as Brian enters, just points at the door.
“Sorry, but we’re closed.”
The exhaustion hits Brian all at once, and he manages to make it another three steps before he falls forward. He reaches out with his right arm, trying to catch himself with a bloodied hand. He only succeeds in knocking things from the shelves as he falls, hitting the ground hard.
“Hey, mister! What, are you drunk?”
“Call--” Brian gasps. His breath is coming in short pants, and the world is starting to get dark and blurry at the edges.
“I’m calling an ambulance,” the man says, but his voice is far away, like he’s talking underwater. “Hang on!”
Brian blinks heavily, trying to stay awake, but he’s cold and soaked to the bone and he’s been bleeding for the last few hours and he’s made it this far but damn, he’s never felt a tired like this before, and there’s nothing he can do as the world spins and fades to black.
xxx
Brian wakes up slowly, awareness coming in stages. Hearing comes first--two voices, low, in hushed conversation, and a steady, rhythmic beeping. Physical sensations follow--a faint tickling in his nose, a stinging on the inside of his elbow and the back of his hand, a dull, throbbing ache in his shoulder…He groans a little, grimacing. What the hell?
“Whoa, hey. Hey Finch, you awake?”
The memory comes suddenly--Brian, standing in the empty parking lot with four police officers, Coulby raising the gun, firing--shit.
Brian’s eyes fly open and he starts to sit up, only for pain and dizziness to knock him back again.
“Brian!” Ike is standing next to him, putting a strong hand on his wrist. “Finch. Brian, you’re okay! You’re safe. You’re in the hospital. You need to calm down. Daryl, get someone in here, will you? And let Agent Harris know he’s awake.”
Brian shakes his head, heart pounding. “No, no, you don’t understand. It’s not. Safe. It wasn’t just Coulby, okay, there were--there were others.”
“I know,” Ike says, nodding. He’s surprisingly, frustratingly calm. “I know, Finch. You gave a list of names to one of the paramedics that brought you in and told them to get it to Rebecca. You don’t remember?”
Brian blinks, trying to slow his breathing and get the panic under control. “No. I don’t remember any of that. Ow, my shoulder…”
“You need to take it easy,” Ike says, his voice surprisingly gentle. “Coulby is already in custody, and it’s only a matter of time before we get the others. You did good. Just--don’t tell Agent Harris I said so. She’s furious, and would definitely kick my ass.”
“I probably shouldn’t’ve gone off on my own, should I?”
“Oh, absolutely not. We almost lost you.”
Brian feels himself pale a little, the ache in his shoulder making itself just a little more known. “That bad?”
Ike nods. “Pretty bad. But you did it. You got yourself to help, and you weren’t even on NZT…How’re you feeling?”
There’s something in his expression, an empathy in his eyes that lets Brian know he’s remembering the time he was shot.
“Okay…Hey, did they let you keep your bullet?”
Ike snorts. “Yeah, no. It’s evidence, Finch.”
Brian makes a face. “Damn.”
The door opens a second later, and Mike returns, a nurse in tow.
“Agent Harris is on her way here,” Mike says as the nurse starts taking Brian’s vitals. “She’s probably going to make you wish that bullet had taken you out.”
Brian smiles a little. He definitely isn’t looking forward to a lecture, but he’s excited to see Rebecca, for real this time.
“I can take it.”

CBS has an NCIS prequel series about a younger Gibbs in its crosshairs. But who is fit to fill a thirtysomething Mark Harmon’s shoes?
Well, we have some ideas!
Ordered to series earlier this month, NCIS: Origins will be set in the year 1991 and pick up with Leroy Jethro Gibbs as a “newly minted Special Agent at the fledgling NCIS Camp Pendleton office where he forges his place on a gritty, ragtag team led by NCIS legend Mike Franks.” TVLine has also learned that producers will be introducing a young version of Special Agent Vera Strickland, Franks’ onetime partner played by Roma Maffia in a Season 11 NCIS episode
In addition to executive-producing the well-watched franchise’s latest spinoff, Mark Harmon — who of course starred on the original NCIS for its first 19 seasons — will narrate NCIS: Origins.
And while Mark’s son Sean Harmon over the years has played a younger Gibbs in seven total NCIS episodes (via “flashbacks”), a new actor is being sought to fill the plum role on NCIS: Origins. Specifically, sources tell TVLine the spinoff is looking for an actor in his mid-30s, who ideally has blue eyes (like Mark Harmon).
The TVLine staff brainstormed some, and offer below a list of 11 possibilities, many of whom sport blue peepers. Review our picks, then weigh in with your own, ideal “Young Gibbs.”
Robbie Amell
Tumblr media
We know, Upload — on which he stars as a digitally “resurrected” computer programmer — theoretically could get a Season 4 at Prime Video. But if that’s not in the cards, Amell could be a fine fit as Young Gibbs.
PREVIOUS TV CREDITS: Upload, The Flash, The Tomorrow People, Revenge and others
EYE COLOR: Blue!
Matt Barr
Tumblr media
We really like Barr for this. He brings a vitality to his roles, as well as swagger and charm, and he is no stranger to the Paramount/CBS/The CW family. Surely he’s on their radar.
PREVIOUS TV CREDITS: Walker Independence, Walker, Blood & Treasure, Valor, Hellcats, Harper’s Island and others
EYE COLOR: Blue!
Ryan Hansen
Tumblr media
OK, this is one of our wilder wild cards, seeing as Hansen’s resume is comedy-heavy. But we are admittedly curious to see if he could dial things in enough to lead a procedural. CBS, though, may not be as curious; plus, he’s one of the oldest (north of 40) picks on our list.
PREVIOUS TV CREDITS: Veronica Mars, Party Down, A Million Little Things, Ryan Hansen Solves Crimes on Television (web series), 2 Broke Girls and others
EYE COLOR: Hazel
Matt Lanter
Tumblr media
You kinda like this one, right? Lanter proved his leading-man chops on the gone-too-soon Timeless, and frankly he is due for a sure thing such as an NCIS spinoff.
PREVIOUS TV CREDITS: Timeless, Jupiter’s Legacy, Star-Crossed, 90210 and others
EYE COLOR: Blue!
Chris Lowell
Tumblr media
With How I Met Your Father‘s cancellation, he’s available. Though his previous drama roles have leaned a bit on the lighter side.
PREVIOUS TV CREDITS: How I Met Your Father, GLOW, Graves, Enlisted, Private Practice, Veronica Mars and others
EYE COLOR: Blue!
Jake McDorman
Tumblr media
CBS has twice before bet on McDorman, to headline its adaptation of Bradley Cooper’s Limitless movie and to play no less than Murphy Brown’s son. It’s almost hard to see how he doesn’t get this role.
PREVIOUS TV CREDITS: Class of ’09, Mrs. Davis, Murphy Brown, Limitless, Manhattan Love Story, Greek and others
EYE COLOR: Blue!
Beau Mirchoff
Tumblr media
With Ride cancelled and Good Trouble ending, we put forth Mirchoff, because he deserves nice things. Blue eyes? No. But his age (a reported 35) is right in the sweet spot NCIS: Origins aims to cast.
PREVIOUS TV CREDITS: Ride, Good Trouble/The Fosters, Narcos: Mexico, I’m Dying Up Here, Awkward., Desperate Housewives and others
EYE COLOR: Green
Luke Mitchell
Tumblr media
Like, how could we not suggest Mitchell? Yes, he’s about to recur on Chicago Med, with an option to maybe become a series-regular. But if a spinoff of TV’s most-watched drama came knocking with a leading role, that’d be quite the temptation.
PREVIOUS TV CREDITS: Chicago Med (upcoming), Big Sky, Blindspot, The Code, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., The Tomorrow People, Home and Away and others
EYE COLOR: Blue!
Chris Pine
Tumblr media
Let us stop you right there: If our list had a “reach school,” yes, Pine is it. He’s a total long-shot, given his big-screen bonafides. But if he’s tired of Trekking… man, he’d be quite perfect (if one of the older, 40-plus candidates on our list).
PREVIOUS TV CREDITS: I Am the Night, Netflix’s Wet Hot American Summer sequel and prequel series, Angie Tribeca and others
EYE COLOR: Blue!
Ian Somerhalder
Tumblr media
If Somerhalder, after so many years of genre-TV, is ready to settle down with a procedural, he in some ways does favor a young Harmon. That said, he appears to be the oldest, 40something actor on our list.
PREVIOUS TV CREDITS: V-Wars, The Vampire Diaries, Lost, Tell Me You Love Me and others
EYE COLOR: Blue!
Lucas Till
Tumblr media
The star of CBS’ five-season MacGyver reboot is perhaps the youngest of our picks, south of 35. And with FX’s Lee Daniels-EP’d The Spook Who Sat by the Door pilot being redeveloped, he is 100% available. A perfect fit for all…?
PREVIOUS TV CREDITS: MacGyver, plus guest spots on Blue Mountain State, House, Medium and others
EYE COLOR: Blue!

So, recently I was thinking about Joan of Arcadia.
Joan of Arcadia was a CBS drama that aired from 2003-2005. Joan (Amber Tamblyn) is a teenage girl who is gifted with unwanted prophecy when God shows up in the guise of various strangers to engage her in various projects to teach her life lessons. It was not quite as cheesy and moralistic as it sounds but the format of the show was obviously quite a bit cliched. Joan was surrounded by tragedy: her older brother (Jason Ritter) was paralyzed in an auto accident, she's sent to "crazy camp" because she can see God, her best friend gets murdered. When her kind, sensitive boyfriend cheats on her, it's seen as a side issue. At the end of the series she supposedly meets the devil. Then the show was abruptly canceled because not enough teenagers were watching it despite hamfisted attempts to bring in younger viewers (hiring the then-teenage Duff sisters for guest arcs, the aforementioned cheating arc which didn't really fit with the rest of the show, etc). It probably didn't help that CBS refused to move the show off of Friday nights. They replaced it with Jennifer Love Hewitt's Ghost Whisperer because "ghosts skew younger than God." Ghost Whisperer ran for five seasons but never got the critical acclaim Joan of Arcadia did or its mainstream Emmy nominations (it did get a few Emmy noms in technical categories).
The reason I bring this up is because CBS did have a point about the older viewers. The average viewer of the show was women in their 50s (to be fair, there were a decent amount of storylines about Joan's parents, but probably not any more so than in teen shows of the time period). They idolized Joan and her supposedly ideal boyfriend's relationship and thought they were the perfect couple. I constantly saw comments about wanting them to be more like the married couple on Medium, a show airing at the time period starting Patricia Marquette as a mom of three. But...they were SIXTEEN! Joan couldn't even master laundry or college applications yet (maybe God should have helped out a little on those things).
I think about this when I see adult fans of Gilmore Girls constantly talk about how saintly and perfect Dave was compared not only to Lane's eventual husband who rose to very adult challenges, but to every other male character in the show, including the adults. I also see this in people scorning Jess for not adequately planning for dates despite not having the time or money to do so and not living up to the standards of Logan, an adult who had limitless resources at his disposal (and who also ran into scheduling snafus with Rory because she's unable to communicate what she wants and seems to labor under the misconception of the Dean years that couples aren't allowed to spend time apart). Maybe I'm crazy but people should remember that some characters were children living up to the expectations placed on a child and they shouldn't be judged (or idolized) on a framework where adult expectations and adult behavior don't apply.
