Yeah yeah linux having problems is a big joke but honestly have you considered that linux wouldn't run like shit if it didn't have to reverse engineer byzantine proprietary drivers and hardware architecture and deliberately hostile BIOS firmware and one thousand other things that exist solely to force everything that isn't a corporate OS to suffer miserably on every computer ever
#it's easy to get mad at linux for having all these arcane issues but have you considered that this is the fault of corporations#Computers are literally explicitly designed to be hostile to linux because that's not friendly to advertisers and corporate interests#I'm sick of getting shit for running linux. I hate all the problems i'm having too. Obvioisly. Fucking clearly#But it's not a stupid prize for stupid games. It's a punishment for having the audacity to want my computer to be fucking mine#I'm sick of using billboard OS. I'm sick of having to hump spyware to talk to my friends. I just want to have a computer#And that's fucking difficult because computers are literally built from the absolute bedrock up to be hostile to the way out#This isn't my fucking fault. I'm not fucking stupid. It's corporate bullshit. fucking again. I'm a victim of spite#not of choosing the problems OS#problemnyatic rants#problemnyatic vents#problemnyatic thoughts#linux

I feel like Linuxposting. Let's Linuxpost.
Aka. Lemme just shill for Linux Mint for like a solid paragraphs because I need to scream.
I use Windows for uni (have to use Power BI Desktop for one class), but at the start of the semester, my Monday class teacher would ask us "do you use Windows or are you happy?"
This was a little jab since he's a Mac user. At the time I had my Ubuntu dualboot system. Picked it since I had worked with it before, wasn't the Greatest fan (it would behave weirdly and just close programs due to "memory usage" when I Know it shouldn't be acting like that)
Thing is, my Linux partition is tiny. Attempts at shrinking my Windows were. Not good. Eventually I accidentally broke my Ubuntu install by trying to remove packages I shouldn't.
Reinstalled it, realized it didn't spark joy. Found Linux Mint, switched over.
If I could, I'd nuke my Windows install. It's Just That Nice.
I can customize the FUCK out of it. System font. Icons. Made up filetypes just because. Desklets. Applets.
Felt like "my system" instead of "the system I own".
Originally had a Linux system purely to write fic. LibreOffice felt a lot more freeing compared to Word. Hell, I realized I refused to swear on my fics because it felt like I was being judged. Most of my AO3 fics (barring the very first one) were written in LibreOffice.
Only issue I had was the Burn my Windows extension (and another that made the windows all wobbly) won't make Cinnamon launch properly. Wonder why.
No biggie if y'all have to use Windows as well for X and Y reasons, but whenever I see the GRUB menu, I just ask myself: "am I gonna use Windows, or am I gonna be happy?"
#my stuff#linux#linux mint#i wish i had a safer way to test other stuff i do on windows only like steam games#because my laptop's the strongest in the house#also i need a linuxposting tag hold on#tehc pingu#yes.

The Roads Untraveled: Exploring the New Content in Scarlet Hollow

The Roads Untraveled game update coming to Scarlet Hollow is a relaunch on Linux, Steam Deck, Mac, and Windows PC. All thanks to the creative minds at Black Tabby Games. Which you can find on Steam and Humble Store. Scarlet Hollow, the award-winning gothic horror story from Black Tabby (the minds behind Slay the Princess), is back with a massive update — The Roads Untraveled. This update isn’t just some minor tweak; it’s a full-on overhaul with tons of new content for Linux and Steam Deck. Due to hit Steam on Monday, March 3. Just in time for Visual Novel Fest. If you’ve already explored the eerie town of Scarlet Hollow, you’ll notice some big changes. And if you’re stepping in for the first time—welcome, but don’t get too comfortable. The title’s married dev duo has gone all in, expanding the script by over 70,000 words across four chapters, and upgrading the UI. Due to make the whole The Roads Untraveled experience smoother and creepier than ever. Plus, you’ll get even more of Abby Howard’s hauntingly beautiful art to pull you deeper into the mystery. You’re back in North Carolina, for your Aunt Pearlanne Scarlet’s funeral. She was the owner of the town’s old coal mine, but her passing isn’t the only thing stirring up trouble. Your cousin Tabitha isn’t eager to see you, and something else—something unnatural—is lurking in the shadows. The town has always had secrets, but this time, the mysteries feel heavier, the air thicker with something that shouldn’t be here.

youtube
It’s not just grief that brought you here. There’s a pull—something beyond logic—that’s dragging you deeper into this place, forcing you onto a path you might not be able to turn back from. Every choice you make changes the story, twisting it in ways you won’t see coming. And, it’s also not just Aunt Pearlanne’s life on the line. You can shape your experience in wild ways—maybe you can talk to animals, maybe you’re just that hot (seriously, it’s a trait). The choices you make unlock unique routes through the game’s branching paths, and yes, romance is an option—even if your potential partner happens to be a cryptid hunter or, you know, a decaying specter that won’t leave you alone. Seven chapters are planned, and each one pulls you deeper into this cursed town’s unraveling fate. The Roads Untraveled update lands on Steam starting March 3 with the launch of Visual Novel Fest. The best part? The first episode, completely reworked, will be free as a demo. You can play it and carry your progress straight into the full game. Which si also on Humble Store. Both priced at $24.99 USD / £19.99 / 21,99€. Coming to Steam Deck, Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. So, are you ready to return to Scarlet Hollow? Just be careful — you might not leave the same person you were when you arrived.

so apex legends just blocked people from playing on linux "to combat cheating". nevermind that 99% of cheaters are on windows because most cheaters are not master hackers TTLing the mainframe to crack the chipset, but snotnosed 14 year olds who downloaded some barely functional malware. this is what not being able to install kernel-level spyware on someone's computer does to a mf
say what you want about overwatch but it has run flawlessly on linux since it came out on steam and cheaters on any OS are basically not an issue there. I'm sorry EA, but your cheater plague is nothing more than a skill issue
hey did you know there are cheaters on windows? better ban all PC players just to be sure. and hey, xbox and playstation have an unfair advantage over the switch, that's basically cheating, ban them too! and you know what? the switch is the only current console you can really jailbreak so there may be cheaters over there too.

I run Linux on my personal computer and have for years.
It's intuitive once you get it going.
It doesn't have bloatware or AI or spyware.
It runs all of my videogames easily.
I honestly don't know why anyone wouldn't use it except for the learning curve of getting it running, but there are a ton of tutorials and such to help.
Highly recommend Linux.
And yes, I am a giant nerd. 🤓

hellow, new update, for now this is gonna look a bit more like a random thoughts / gameplay simblr...
ts2 is running amazing on fedora 41 - i'm legit not getting ANY pink even with a full stress test of high lot imposters, a TON of high-poly cc, etc! LITERALLY my dream!
but, unfortunately, i haven't got simpe, milkshape, etc. to run yet. which i've been procrastinating for some time due to lack of tutorials but also laziness, i'm liking my new schedule and i can finally enjoy this game the way will wright intended 🩷
A FINAL UPDATE FOR MY PINK SOUP EXPERIMENTATION
at this point, i have tested sims 2 on the latest windows 11 on various other PCs in my house, with both AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards. there's barely any difference. i still am experiencing major crashing and pink soup issues on systems with an RTX 3060, RX 580, GTX 1660 Ti, and of course my 7900 XTX. dxvk, new drivers, literally everything great minds like @osab and @brandinotbroke and many others have suggested has done nothing.
BUT!
at their suggestion, i tried Linux. Fedora 41 as i said above.
AND ALL MY PROBLEMS HAVE GONE AWAY.
other games are now running smoothly too with 0 errors and crashing; of course i don't have access to the same apps and ease of comfort as i did on windows, but hot damn, i can play sims 2! with and without cc! again!!
i am also not the only one, funnily enough! in our tests this massive pink flashing issue seems to affect not just my PC, but many others who have both NVIDIA or AMD graphics cards. the only link we have found... is windows 11.
with Linux it just all goes away!
so tl;dr;
IF YOU ARE HAVING PINK FLASHING ISSUES ON YOUR WINDOWS 11, IT IS LIKELY NOT YOUR PC, IT IS AN ISSUE WITH THE LATEST WINDOWS UPDATE!
so do NOT go out buying yourself an RTX GPU or a new CPU, it is just NOT going to help! don't bother with trying to reinstall windows because literally it has done nothing for me.
our current theory is that something is screwed with the latest update. in directx, in texture memory allocation - literally do not know. all we know is that a different OS just - fixes it. literally and figuratively like magic.
if you're willing to learn how to install Linux and potentially a new SSD, go for it! hopefully in a few days me or someone else will have a tutorial out.
LONG LIVE LINUX!

favourite things about wine/proton gaming specifically are there being a switch labelled "Feral Gamemode" and being able to use the phrase "the Vulcans are shading" whenever steam is caching shaders for a game

Of course you can play video games on a Linux PC. We have:
Every boomer shooter via source ports
Basically every emulator
Morrowind via openmw
That's basically every game that matter.

I find kernel level anti-cheats and generally client-side anticheats like BattleEye, EasyAntiCheat, and Vanguard really stupid, because they really aren't stopping cheaters, all they're doing is discouraging them while sacrificing performance, user privacy, Linux support, and generally risking accidentally banning casual user.
I started developing my own anti-cheat for a game and it hit me, you should never have any anti-cheat on the client. All anti-cheats should be server-side, because to this day players are still figuring out ways to bypass these anti-cheats, like using hardware-level exploits which are physically impossible to detect unless they start serving anti-cheats as AI-powered robots that are physically in your room looking at you while you game.
Think about it.. Wall hacks let you see other players through walls, easy solution right? Just don't tell the client where the other players are, do server-side calculations for occlusion, you already have a system for it to do it client-side since it saves performance not to render players that aren't on the screen. But nope, because it would slightly increase server costs, even if it makes cheating impossible to perform.
The number one rule in multiplayer is "NEVER TRUST THE CLIENT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE", and these huge game dev corporations are consistently not following it, then complain about having cheaters while going "Oh, it must be the Linux users!!! Not our flawed approach at anti-cheat!!!"
