“I want you by my side,” Sherlocked breathed next to him. So quietly, only they could hear. His lips hardly ghosting, as the cameras flashed around them. Both were blankly staring at the crowd that surrounded on all sides. The police escort. The caution tape. The reporters. Here Sherlock was baring his heart out, and wishing - more than he had ever wanted anything in his whole privileged life, that for one precious moment, they could have had the privacy of 221b. The chance to say this in closed quarters. Behind locked doors. And to take it all back, if need be…

Where would it have lead? He asked himself.

Not here.

Now they were on display. And it was all his fault. He should have foreseen this.

He was grappling with the full reality, that this might be his last real moment with John Hamish Watson.

There was no room for halves.

“John?” he begged. And Sherlock,

                                                       never begged.

But Watson was not making eye contact. Stoically bearing the weight of what was happening all around them.

Sherlock worried that he might not have heard, or may not want to speak to him. Ever again. Now that…   He barely reached out an arm, before having his hand pulled roughly back into lockdown. And when John breathed in sharply, Sherlock’s stilled his own intake, to hear what he would reply. The few moments they had left, were a precious commodity. And he needed to know.

“I am by your side, Sherlock. For what it’s worth.” John stated, “Just the two of us against the world.” He sounded fatalistic. And Sherlock dreaded where his mind was, as he continued. “I’ve always wanted just to be, with you. Wherever it lead. By your side.” I’ve tried to keep you right. To keep things even. To not rock the boat. His unspoken message stated clearly to Sherlocks ears. And Sherlock felt his heart breaking.

Watson hadn’t known then…

“I was always yours… ” Watson surprised him, by continuing… “to do with as you will.”

And I kept you at arms length. Sherlock thought to himself.  It had always been there. His to take. And he had let it slip through his fingers. What an utter fool he had been.

“You are,” John stated simply, “after all - the only thing that made life worth living.” Then John lifted his chin, and stood up straighter. As the police officers came and took him in arm, guiding him away.

Sherlock reached out for John’s fingers a moment too late - for he had moved just beyond the limitations of the handcuffs binding Sherlock’s wrists. His anger flared up, and he yelled at the sky. In a language no tongue was needed to interpret.

Bare grief.

Raw pain.

He was ripped open by the invitation that had been laid at his feet. Only to be taken away. A paradise built on clouds. Fading. With every step Watson took. It was pulled further away. A void being drawn wide, that would soon engulf the world.

For he had been, Sherlock’s world.

Sherlock found himself now being dragged in the opposite direction.

To a waiting armored car.

Minthara's Parents

I've been working on this post awhile and I'm so excited to share it with you. I referenced @lunastrophe's excellent post on the topic for several details, and R.A. Salvatore's "Homeland" played a crucial role.

*I will make an individual post on Minthara's relationship to her mother later on, particularly the psychology of it, as it is fascinating and utterly tragic.

Minthara is- or was- unusually close to her mother, who taught her how to 'survive the perils of society', but she says there was 'no love to be found.' Minthara's mother saved her daughter's life by shielding her with her own body when Minthara was an infant, and yet she later tried to kill her. Minthara intends to kill her- "[...] I only regret that I left before enjoying a matricide. That would be a memory to cherish."- but says it is 'returning the favor.'

What do we know?

House Devir fell from Lolth's favor in 1297 DR, when they were destroyed by House Do'Urden, due to Viconia's actions. Minthara describes herself as having been young and impressionable at this time, so she must have been in the early decades of her life. Therefore, she was likely born around 1270-1290 DR, leaving her approximately 222 years old in 1492 DR, the year Baldur's Gate III is set in.

Minthara is a Baenre. Her mother is confirmed to be Baenre, as in the epilogue, if you romance Minthara (I highly recommend it) she says her name is her mother's.

When Minthara is asked if her mother is still alive, she replies, "I expect so. If the world were to end, I think my mother would survive to rule over the ruins." At the epilogue party, she tells Origin Karlach, "I have a war of my own to fight, against my mother and her people [...]" which both confirms that her mother is alive and suggests that she is in a position of great power.

Minthara's mother is competitive (Minthara says this herself), resilient, and ambitious (Minthara says her mother likes Neverwinter because it is "ripe for conquering"), much like her daughter.

Minthara and her mother were unusually close- she held her as a child, taught her to "talk, walk, and then kill" and how to "survive the perils of society", gave her a torture rack for her 13th birthday, and they appear to have conversed frequently.

The fact that Minthara has committed avunculicide (the killing of one's uncle) confirms one of her parents had a brother. She also 'picked off' her 'siblings one by one', and Orin claims Minthara murdered her sister in the cradle to secure her inheritance.The first part of her name, "Min", means lesser/second, suggesting she is a 2nd child.

I believe Minthara's father is alive for the following reasons:

1. During the dryad love test, she lists her "-icides", (androcide, senicide and avunculicide). She does not mention patricide. She tells Wyll that patricide is the first step to greatness but she does not say she has done so herself.

2. When Minthara is describing how she and Orin are similar in some ways, she says that they both have "parents" who protect them with one hand and torment them with the other, rather than "mothers".

3. Minthara says (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vYBaYJgz_c, at 43:50) "I'll spot my father too, with any luck" at some point; @mogruith's research suggests that this line was mistakenly given to Minthara when it should have gone to Wyll, so it is not solid evidence.

But Minthara never mentions him- not even once.

So, who is Minthara's mother? *I don't think it's possible to figure out who her father is with the information I have

It cannot be Yvonnel or Triel Baenre, who are dead. Liriel Baenre is out of the question. Noori Baenre, I believe, is too young.

Yovnnel Baenre had 15 daughters, each a high priestess, acording to R.A. Salvatore's "Homeland".  The majority were alive, it seemed, around 1297 DR. The only two remaining in 1480 DR and thus during Baldur's Gate III were Quenthel and Sos'Umtpu. So could it be one of them?

Quenthel: No.

The firstborn of Quenthel Baenre is Myrineyl Baenre. In 1480 DR, 12 years prior to the events of Baldur's Gate III, she is in her last year at Arach-Tinilith. Baldur's Gate takes place in 1492 DR. It is obvious that Minthara is older than her, so she can't be Quenthel's daughter.

Sos'Umptu: Probably not, unfortunately. (I adore Sos'Umptu.)

Sos'Umptu, the keeper of the Baenre chapel, has been described as 'one of the least ambitious drow females her mother had ever known.' Minthara has also mentioned her mother having visited surface cities before, while Sos'Umptu hardly leaves the chapel if she can help it. These facts contrast with Minthara's portrayal of her mother as power-hungry and world-wise. Plus, I have never seen a mention of Sos'Umptu having had children.

@lunastrophe says in her post, "It seems that daughters of House Baenre – at least the eldest and the most important ones – were not allowed to have their own children while the matron mother of their house was still alive (from Siege of Darkness). Triel was free to have children only after she ascended to the position of matron mother, and the same went for Quenthel."

This all heavily suggests it is not Sos'Umptu- but it's not out of the question.

Could it perhaps be Merith Baenre, the second-most-powerful priestess of her House as of 1361 DR, considered for the role of the next Mistress of Arach-Tinilith? Perhaps- but Minthara has never implied that her mother is adopted rather than a genetic Baenre, and Merith used to be the daughter of a street sweeper before her clerical powers caught Yvonnel Baenre's eye and caused her to adopt her as a daughter.

So, who could it be?

I am inclined to think...

Zal'Therra Baenre: Zal'Therra Baenre- a cousin of Triel, and commander of the rearguard of the Army of the Black Spider in 1372 DR. The most promising of Triel's cousins, she seems to fit Minthara's implications that her mother is ambitious, brutal, and powerful, as the highest ranking House Baenre member of the army.

Not only is the description right, she is similar to Minthara as a warrior, the leader of an army. Even the second half of her name, 'Therra', is similar to Minthara's 'Thara'. Plus, everything about her is so vague that it's plausible she had children aside from Minthara- the 'siblings' she mentioned.

I have yet to read "Condemnation", though, so correct me if I'm wrong about anything.

Final notes: if Zal'Therra Baenre is a cousin of Triel, that would make Sos'Umptu, Quenthel, Jarlaxle and others Minthara's aunts and uncles.

No need to be sorry, this is a really interesting question 😊 Drow have significantly longer lifespans than humans, so I imagine that they celebrate milestones rather than birthdays.

Noble Houses keep the birth records, but merely for practical reasons.

In case of young drow, sixteenth birthday is typically perceived as a milestone and celebrated as the official end of childhood and the first step towards adulthood. I mentioned it in this post about drow childhood and also shared some speculations in this post about Minthara's past.

Becoming old enough to start education in the Academy is also an important milestone - so twentieth or twenty-fifth birthday of a noble drow is likely also a popular occasion to celebrate.

Noble drow apparently receive birthday gifts, sometimes incredibly expensive ones - in Daughter of the Drow, it was mentioned that Liriel Baenre on her twenty-fifth birthday received her own house, which was in fact a miniature castle in Narbondellyn.

It’s called Two Worlds.

It’s a gay fantasy romcom about two Elves, Liriel the Wood Elf and Eirian the High Elf, made to go on a quest together to save their people. The issue? They don’t like each other.

Inspired by Frieren, Lord of the Rings, Delicious in Dungeon, D&D, and weirdly enough - Cabin Pressure (Though that’s more inspiring the comedy aspect of the romcom.)

I’ve written stuff before, but it’s mostly been scripts for Doctor Who fan audios. Though, I dod originally plan this an audio drama but the more I worked on it, the more it just made sense to make it a book! And now here we are!

This is a bit of a daunting new challenge for me but I am ready to tackle it, embrace it, and face the challenges ahead!

I’d really appreciate advice from other writers, maybe some support on this too. It is a very big task. Tips on what tags to use when talking about it would be good too!

I am having so much fun scrolling through the Liriel, Solas and Mahanon text posts, the dynamic is absolutely sending me XD

@orodrethsgeek and I call Mahanon the "cinnabun" because three quarters of the OT4 were ripping each others' throats out on a regular basis and the only reason why they didn't outright kill each other was because Mahanon was an actual adult with social skills who'd shooshpap anyone who got too riled up. Alright so, a drabble I'd love to write fic about:

1) Ascended Astarion post BG3 having never met Tav (think Astarion origin story but you romance no one): his attempts at luring a young Woof Elf woman to her untimely death and centuries of servitude ultimately backfire as he slowly begins a habit of visiting her at night week after week. Each night he tells himself this is the night he'll take her; each night he ends up home empty handed. Suddenly she's nowhere to be found and Astarion is left to begin his hunt for a victim all over again. He's urgently called to the front of his manor during the middle of the night by a servant, having been told a young woman is at the door cradling a platinum-haired babe in her arms. Astarion realizes it's her, and suddenly she's handing the child over to him. The child is his, he knows it. A tiny babe with silver hair and eyes as red as rubies. Flecks of auburn cut through her platinum roots, and her complexion is a touch too much alive to be akin to death itself. Astarion can feel the small babe's slow heartbeat beneath his palm; she truly is a dhampir child, one of the rarest in all the Realms. The woman named their child Liriel, Elvish for "Lily." The woman knows not how to raise a child, let alone a dhampling. Astarion can tell the child is malnourished; she is small and frail. She needs blood, and lots of it. He initially argues against the thought of raising the child, though he inevitably relents and accepts the child into his care. Astarion offers the woman a place to stay for the evening as the weather is poorly; he hopes to get some answers as to where she's been all of this time. The young woman vehemently refuses his offer and rushes off into the night. Astarion is left standing at his front door alone once again. Soft cooing noises rise from the babe held in his arms.

Hello! Drow fashion is a delightful topic - I think I am going to create a few more detailed posts about drow clothes and beauty care in general. Thank you so much for inspiration! ❤️

For now, here are some basic information:

🕷️ Drow Clothing - in drow society, clothes reflect the drow's station and rank, especially among nobles. The best fabrics, like gossamer-like spider silks, are the most expensive, as well as intricate fabrics that resemble spider webs in their structure. Such web-like fabrics in clothing are often adorned with jewellery.

Leather is an easily available material in the Underdark, and it is often used by drow to produce various items of clothing. Top quality black leather is especially popular among nobles.

Some more common fabrics in the Underdark are made of mushroom fibers. Fabrics made of plant fibers or wool are naturally less common and more expensive, since they need to be obtained from the surface - as merchants' goods or as spoils from raids.

🕷️ Dress To Impress - surfacers often consider drow sense of fashion scandalous, but among drow, it is more about showing off their physical perfection and manifesting their self-confidence.

Drow generally take great care to conceal their physical flaws. In consequence, revealing clothing can be read as a message "I have no flaws to conceal" - or "I have flaws, so what? I am powerful enough not to care!", depending on one's attitude, station and power.

Piwafwi (drow cloaks) of nobles are often marked with specific colours and patterns, to indicate the owner's station and house.

🕷️ Hairstyles - drow usually wear their hair long, but many warriors crop their hair or even shave their heads (shorter hair = less chance for the enemy to grab it). Uthegentel of House Barrison Del'Armgo was wearing his hair short and spiked, most likely styled with some Underdark equivalent of hair gel.

For long hair, some drow use hairpins. It is quite popular among drow to make hairpins that are sharp enough to be used as weapons, or even hairpins that can store spells, like small wands.

Drow also braid their long hair. Triel Baenre, for example, was wearing her hair braided into a tight braid that was wrapped around her head like a crown - simple and practical.

One of young noble females from House Fey-Branche, adept in Arach-Tinilith, was described with her hair braided into three long braids.

Some drow like to braid their hair into many thin braids. Such braids could be used to create elaborate, durable hairstyles, often with help of a skilled servant. Liriel's party hairstyle was of this kind.

In Menzoberranzan, single-braided hair was a mark of a commoner (at least for a young drow male - as far as I remember, it was mentioned in description of only one character in Starlight and Shadows, so I am not really sure if it applies also to females or to older drow).

I also very vaguely remember that at least among Menzoberranyr drow, some hairstyles were reserved only for nobles from specific houses or of specific ranks - but I do not remember details, I would need to look it up.
