I didn't intend to make a post about it, but I am still thinking about it and I feel like if I don't let it out, I will lose my mind.
I was watching a youtube video dunking on the terrible Disney "live action" Pinocchio remake, and then I saw this scene and it made me scream into the pillow.
In this scene, Pinicchio is performing on the stage, the backdrop changes to the one you see there, and the puppets dressed in some stereotypical "russian" costumes show up and start dancing some stereotypical "russian" dance (a lot of which had been taken from other peoples, but that's beside the point).
The point is that backdrop. Which is not just a picture of some stylised building - it is a real place. It's Kyiv Pechersk Lavra, or Kyiv Monastery of the Caves. Which is situated in Kyiv, Ukraine. So having it as a backdrop for russian stereotypes is wrong on so many levels, but even that is not all.
Look at this photo of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra from its Wikipedia page:
Tumblr media
Look at it and then at the backdrop in the stills from the movie. Pay attention to the angles and the shape of the clouds. Not only is it the same place they drew from, it is literally the same picture with some filter on.
The budget for this movie was 200 million dollars. And obviously this is a minor detail, the movie looks like shit on all levels anyway. I guess actually trying is a very outdated concept when you are Disney these days.

this is SO random, but i think one of the Worst things about the Live Action Pinocchio has Got to be the Pleasure Island scene. now, don't get me wrong, removing the blatantly racist stuff was the right move, but changing the smokes and drinks to candy and root beer Completely defeats the purpose of the scene. and NO, I'm not saying "they should have kids Actually drinking and smoking", that's completely absurd. The Point of the scene is the consequences, and don't give me that crap of "todays kids forbidden food is candy!" no, if you updated it to today it would be vaping and white claws (or something to that extent)
By using the candy and root beer, they've once again tried SO hard to play to the "everyman" (as in they knew parents would be flipping their shit seeing kids smoke and drink, so don't even bother bringing it up) that they lose the emphasis of what the story was trying to tell in the FIRST place. the point was to show the behavior was bad, and if the kid was confused by it, then that leads to a conversation of what smoking/alcohol can do to you. like i understand there's a whole "let kids just be kids" but i think especially in this day and age, these types of conversations are still important to have.
(Not to mention the fact that Pinocchio has like, NO consequences in this film, which Also misses the point, there are NO morals to this story, Pinocchio doesn't Learn anything, like if you're so afraid to show him making mistakes or being lied to and led on by bad people than there really was no point in making this film other than the greed for money)

I’m so glad the Guillermo Del Toro Pinocchio movie is being received really well, because it was literally my most anticipated movie of the year! So here’s some fun facts about the crew, concept, and production that got me excited about this movie and that I think would excite much of tumblr as well:
-the screenplay was cowritten by Del Toro and Patrick McHale, creator of Over The Garden Wall and a writer on Adventure Time.
-the movie was codirected by Mark Gustasfon, who was the animation director of Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
-the primary art/animation designers of this movie (production designer Curt Enderle, art director Robert DeSue, character designer Georgina Hayns, animation supervisor Brian Leif Hansen, and photography director Frank Passingham) previously worked on projects that include Coraline, the Corpse Bride, Paranorman, Isle of Dogs, Frankenweenie, Kubo, and Chicken Run.
-Besides Netflix, it was produced by the Henson company (always a good sign when you’re doing anything with puppets) and ShadowMachine, who have produced a lot of Adult Swim shows including Robot Chicken, Moral Orel, and Tuca and Bertie, as well as the Netflix original BoJack Horseman.
-Del Toro was inspired to make this adaptation due to the similarities he’d always noticed between the original Pinocchio story and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. Both are about a man-made character’s relationship with his father/creator, and his attempts to understand what it means to be human. This inspiration is why the film takes on a gothic feel at times.
-the movie is over 10 years in the making. Del Toro announced the project in 2008 and production began in 2012, but it went into development hell and no further updates were made for several years. Del Toro has described it as his passion project, saying "I've wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember.”
-the backdrop of Mussolini’s Italy was intended to show how Pinnochio was able to find his own humanity and will in a time where everyone else was acting like a blindly obedient puppet. Del Toro wanted to deviate from the original book’s themes of obeying authority by making his Pinocchio virtuous for questioning the rules and forging his own set of morals. (Also if you know anything about Del Toro, the guy likes to dunk on fascism.)
-Del Toro didn’t feel the need to have Pinocchio become flesh-and-blood at the end of the movie, saying all you need to be a real human is to behave like one.
I was lucky enough to see this movie in 35 mm in a movie theatre on Thanksgiving weekend. If there are any movie theatre showings near you and you’re in a position to be able to attend them, I would totally recommend it especially if you can go with loved ones. It was a gorgeous, heartwarming, and magical movie to experience on a big screen and perfect for the late fall/winter holiday season.

Now that we've got the salt out of the way..... here's to POSITIVE votes on the live-action remakes!
Once again, I'm only counting DIRECT remakes, not spin-offs or sequels. I decided to cut Cinderella since most people agree that it is the One Good Remake lol. Whether or you not you agree with that is besides the point: which OTHER remake is second-best to Cinderella 2015?
Happy voting! ❤

the Blue Fairy v Holly Short
Tumblr media
Propaganda
the Blue Fairy:
~She's pretty and blue Though Disney didn't want her to be based on the glamour girls of the time, he loved the design for her despite that Hates lying/liars Super sweet ~The FIRST Disney fairy deserves the nomination, if not the win.
Holly Short:
~She’s one of the coolest fairies I’ve ever heard of. Perhaps it’s just something to do with the world building in the books, but she’s such a badass. In Eoin Colfer’s book, fairies aren’t born with wings. She spent time and effort learning to use wing backpack type things to fly. She’s a good friend, but will absolutely shoot you if you’re being stupid. Please, man. I love her.

So let me get this straight, it's okay for Taylor Swift to keep releasing variants in order to keep other artists out of the #1 spot on the billboards, but it's not okay for Disney to rush-release their live action Pinocchio to block Guillermo Del Toro's version?

I'm feeling Salty today, so let's gooooooo!
KEEP IN MIND: I'm only counting direct remakes, not sequels or spin-offs! So, that means no Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, no Maleficent or Cruella, etc.
I have a..... complicated relationship with live action remakes in general, and thought I'd spice up my polls this time around. Let the Worst Trash win 😈
Happy voting! ❤
