The thing that is so amazing for me about Doran is that he is essentially the FIRST father we get in this series (we are like FOUR THOUSAND PAGES IN AT THIS POINT BTW) who realizes he has allowed his own faults to harm the trust his daughter has placed in him and then takes responsibility for how he has hurt her. Doran is livid with Arianne until she finally makes the comment about believing he is set to disinherit her and give Dorne to Quentyn and then his anger completely deflates, and he says very clearly to her, “Dorne will be yours. You have my word on that, if my word still has any meaning for you.”

“IF MY WORD STILL HAS ANY MEANING FOR YOU.”

He doesn’t try to put the blame back on her after this, and in fact he puts the breaks on the conversation, making it clear that the problem here was his lack of communication and not Arianne's mistrust. And more than that, just this tiny little acknowledgment that he’s done her wrong is enough for Arianne to completely forgive him! All she needed in the end was a simple acknowledgement that he was being unfair. The moment she gets it she is determined to be her father’s dutiful daughter all over again, even after years of resentment and mistrust. It is, ultimately, i think all most of the daughters who clash with their fathers need in the end and that really only Arianne is lucky enough to receive; a simple acknowledgement that he is the one who messed up, and that she was right to be wary of him. And that little acknowledgement is all either of them needs to face whatever comes next -

Doran makes the effort to try. He is not perfect but at least he tries for Arianne and it gives Arianne the confidence to pick herself up and try again as well.

It’s interesting that in this version Lava Lamp is consumed with the constant sadness that she could drop dead literally any moment, and so every single interaction he has with her is completely heartbreaking. Meanwhile in the Chapter 1 version of these events Syaoran WASN’T consumed by this sadness - there was no curse, there were no lies, there was no acting. But Sakura still (practically) dropped dead due to Evil Wolverine’s plans the very next day, and had to be put back together piece by piece. 

And oh how THAT must have sucked to watch through Syaoran’s eyes - to watch the happier, more carefree version of your life play out with an equivalent tragedy hitting Sakura around the same point in time. 

Especially after searching for (almost) SEVEN YEARS and not being able to prevent it. And then watching for another seven years for it to end the same way. 

Honestly Lava Lamp needs more than one hug at this point.

to me, as soon as logan said in 4.02 “I love you, but you are not serious people” I felt the whole season was going to be about whether or not the kids accept this as their reality and as the truth, or whether they will die fighting against it.

kendall fought tooth and nail, until he was violent and rabid and delusional, and even changing the past just to cling onto something that wasn’t even real, nor was it his to begin with.

shiv accepted it in some way, but still clings to a scrap of power by staying with tom because she can’t stand not to have at least one toe dipped in the pool, especially since now she knows for certain that every single man in her life will betray her anyway so she might as well just stick with the one she can tolerate the most. she couldn’t tolerate kendall like she could tom.

roman on the other hand, I would say has arguably the most interesting ending of the three. his spiel of “this means nothing, it’s all bullshit” wasn’t coming from a place of numbness and immaturity like it was in 4.08. it was him accepting his father’s premise, and him telling kendall “you’re bullshit, I’m bullshit, it’s all bullshit. it’s not real” is him embracing that truth about himself and getting to a place where he doesn’t need the power or the throne or even the approval anymore. he is who he is, and he embraces his fate and whatever comes next. which, all flaws considered, is… actually pretty healthy???

I think the idea of having some agency in whether or not you continue your afterlife makes sense. But the implication you cannot sustain a life based on happiness, or that struggle is what gives people personhood, doesn’t sit right with me. Personhood is an act of love for yourself and others

I truly wondered how this show would end and I guess the glowing embers of Eleanor’s last bit of existence blessing Michael with a Coyote Joe’s card while he says to a good samaritan, his friends, and by extension the audience, “Take it sleazy,” is as good a way as any! 

Final thoughts: I really do love the way this show is written, how everything is intentional, how it’s so focused on love and connection and growth, and how each season manages to engage you with a different question. It’s interesting how, although they often use Heaven as a point of reference, this ending was a bit more Hindu/Buddhist in its leanings (i.e. liberation from physical incarnation/rebirth—and in the sense their testing system as that reincarnation cycle—through the accumulation of positive karma or liberation from desire). Ironically, even as someone who is Hindu, I still do think personhood is an act of love, and I feel like that ‘love for love’s sake,’ idea was a little lost in these final few episodes. But all the same, going into it this was my favourite show (even having only seen 2 seasons) and it still is. It’s a good show!!!! I love every character, and I feel satisfied with their stories!

tell me why the first ep of the opla has me in NEAR TEARS it's just smthn about the /genuine-ness/ of it? the lack of tired snarky fourth wall breaking jokes? it's an objectively silly plot about pirates and friendship and it is played completely straight and it is SO refreshing? for things to be allowed to be genuine and full of heart? these actors giving it the gravitas of shakespeare?

there's a time and a place for meta humour ofc, but recent trends spurred on by a franchise which shall remain nameless have resulted in so many movies/books/shows that are completely soulless because they can't take themselves seriously. there always has to be a joke, a snarky remark, a fourth wall break, god forbid we experience emotions deeply and genuinely and guileless-ly. idk if it's a reflection of societal fear of vulnerability or simply a cash grab in appealing to the lowest common denominator by avoiding strong (and therefore possibly alienating) emotion

ok update on atla netflix: started final episode, it opens with the attack on the north. its pretty freaking great. frame for frame accurate w the show, and (other than some so so costuming choices, or a few fight-bending scenes with lower budgets) the only changes so far have been for the better
