do you ever read scifi or fantasy in french? i am trying to read more sff that was originally published not in english but it's not easy to find 💀

I do! It’s not my favourite genre but one of my friends loves it so I read a bunch of SFF books every year ahead of her birthday to try and find a gift for her. I’m glad I do this because it’s allowed me to discover N.K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth trilogy which was amazing, and I don’t know if I would have picked it up otherwise!

Here are some French-language authors I’ve read or plan to read (unfortunately English translations are few and far between :( I bolded the names for which I found English translations—if you read in another language you can check out the non-bolded authors, there are often translations available in other languages long before English ones)

When it comes to classics you've got Pierre Boulle (Planet of the Apes of course; also Garden on the Moon, which is (deservedly imo) less known), Jacques Spitz (La Guerre des mouches—it was translated but not into English), René Barjavel (The Ice People, Ravage, Future Times Three—I read them a long time ago but I remember them as very sexist even by French classic standards), Bernard Lenteric (La nuit des enfants rois), Alain Damasio (La Horde du Contrevent—maybe too recent to be a classic but it’s everywhere. I was surprised to find no English translation!), Bernard Werber (I feel like he rehashes the same 3 ideas again and again but some of his earlier stuff was fun), Alexandre Arnoux (Le règne du bonheur), Jules Verne of course, Stefan Wul (Oms en série which was adapted into the film La Planète sauvage—Fantastic Planet in English. I like the film better!) And some I haven’t read: Georges-Jean Arnaud, Serge Brussolo (I liked his Peggy Sue series when I was in middle school but it spooked me so much I haven’t dared to pick up any of his SFF for adults, like Les semeurs d’abîmes), Élisabeth Vonarburg.

Newer authors: Estelle Faye (L’arpenteuse de rêves, Un éclat de givre—I tend to like her worldbuilding more than her plots); Sandrine Collette (The Forests—if you count speculative fiction as SFF) (I didn’t like it at all personally but others might), Jean-Philippe Jaworski (I really liked Janua Vera; didn't like Gagner la guerre but it was mainly because I have a low tolerance for rape scenes in fantasy books) (he’s about to be translated into English according to his editor), Stéphane Beauverger (Le déchronologue)

More authors I haven't yet read: Pierre Pevel (The Cardinal's Blades—I've been told it's "17th century Paris with dragons"), Romain Lucazeau (Latium), Laurent Genefort (Lum’en), Christian Charrière (La forêt d’Iscambe), Roland Wagner (La saison de la sorcière), Aurélie Wellenstein (Mers Mortes—I love the synopsis for this one), Magali Villeneuve (La dernière Terre, trilogy)

And non-French, non-anglo SFF authors: Maryam Petrosyan (my review of the Gray House last year was that I understood maybe 1/3 of it but I liked it anyway!), Hao Jingfang (haven’t read her yet), Arkady & Boris Strugatsky (idem), Jaroslav Melnik (I’ve read Espace lointain (originally Далекий простір) but didn’t like it much), Andreas Eschbach (The Carpet Makers), Walter Moers (I read The City of Dreaming Books back when I was still learning German and found it very charming), Liu Cixin (I loved The Three-Body Problem but The Dark Forest was so sexist it made me not want to pick up the third volume), Lola Robles (El informe Monteverde, translated as Memoirs of an Interstellar Linguist), Elaine Vilar Madruga (Fragmentos de la Tierra Rota), Tatiana Tolstaya (The Slynx), Karin Tidbeck (Amatka), Emmi Itäranta (Memory of Water, The Moonday Letters), Angélica Gorodischer (I’ve read Kalpa Imperial and found it only so-so but it always takes me a while to warm up to characters or a setting so I struggle with short story collections. I’ll still give Trafalgar a try) Also my favourite fantasy book as a kid was Michael Ende’s Neverending Story, I was obsessed with it. I re-read it in the original German a few years ago and it was still great.

The air was thick - the concoction of alcohol, cheap perfume and smoke filling my nostrils, along with other things.

The only sound I could hear was the distant sound of the music from outside the restroom along with undecipherable words spoken by passerby's.

I could barely recognise myself as I stood before my reflection, my pupils completely dilated, my eyes surrounded by a purple hue that peaked through the now oxidised foundation that barely covered the small freckles on my nose. The black eyeliner that surrounded my eyes was smudged, only adding more to the disheveled look that I'm apparently trying to pull off.

As soon as I lean into the sink I'm startled by the sudden increase of volume caused by a group of girls entering the restroom, one face in particular I recognise, making me turn my head back to the sink and resume what I was doing. I turn on the cold tap while I use my other hand to move my unkept hair to the side, leaning down to use my free hand to cup the icy cold water.

"Lola?" I hear a small voice and I know it's her. I can't bring myself to turn my head, so instead I splash the cold water over my face, feeling instantly refreshed at the numbingly cold water as it drips from my chin and the tip of my nose. I reach for the paper towels. The reason I excused myself to the restroom is because I saw her, alongside him. It brought bile to my throat and I couldn't catch my breath, it was too much too soon, and it ended in me craving it. Craving it so bad.

"Lo? Is that you?" The nickname she used rang in my ears and made the hairs on my back stand on edge and my blood began to boil. What a fucking nerve.

This time she sounded more desperate, standing only a few feet away from me as her friends dispersed into the toilet stalls, still laughing and continuing the conversation between each other. 

I turn on my heels, dabbing my face with the paper towel as I'm met with her. Her eyebrows pulled together, showing a small crease in between, her ruby red lips parted slightly. I can't help but feel under interrogation as her eyes raked down my body, taking in my appearance - which is completely different from the last time I saw her.

"Hi, Emma." I say nonchalant, wiping the wetness from my hands with the already damp paper towel.

"Uh-" she holds her hand out towards me, "When did this happen?" She gestures to my appearances. She looked in shock, or maybe disgust? I'm not sure anymore. I couldn't give a shit, really.

"I haven't seen you in two years. A lot happened." I scold. My eyes burning into her own. It takes her a moment to reply as she shifts her weight from foot to foot, her demeanour softening slightly at my words.

"Lola-"

"Have a good night, yeah?" I interrupt, unable to take another second of being in the same room as her. Her familiar  fragrance filled my senses as I walked past her, leaving her standing in the middle of the restroom. Before I could escape, I hear her call for me once more. I hesitantly turn around with a sigh.

"Lola, you forgot something." She turns her head towards me, her doe eyes glazed over. With alcohol? Tears? I couldn't really make out. She reaches over to the sink to retrieve something, and I could instantly feel my stomach sink. She held the small baggie of white powder towards me and I snatch it out of her hand before walking out the restroom - Ignoring the small feeling of guilt I felt in my stomach as I try to shake away the image of her crestfallen eyes peering up at me.

Emma Kingsley, my once alleged best friend of 11 years. We were joined at the hip - everywhere she was I was to follow and the same with me. We met when I was just 8 years old, her father bringing her over to our home because my mother was throwing a small get together. A celebration of her divorce to my father, you could say. Me and Emma clicked instantly. I was the quiet, reserved one and Emma stepped on anyone that gave me hassle and spoke for me when I struggled with words - which happened frequently - and I was there when her father left her with nothing. I was always there for her.

No one understood our friendship, but that was okay.

I shake my head again, almost as if I was shaking away the memories of us. It was a painful reminder of when she completely tore my heart out my chest and broke it into tiny shards onto the ground, not forgetting to step on it while she was at it.

The music was deafening and the club was thriving. I find myself walking towards the bar and propped myself onto the stool. The bartender seemed busy, so I turn my attention to the crowd of people on the dance floor.

My eyes skimmed across the ocean of bodies, trying to detect Collette, who I promised I would only be two minutes, in which she replied by counting slowly, resulting in me rolling my eyes but unable to keep a small smile from finding its way on my lips.

She was with Jack, a guy that found his way in our group a couple months back. I knew the minute I saw Collette's eyes brighten the second he walked in the room, alongside Daniel, her older brother, that she was completely infatuated. I can't blame her, he's total eye candy. He's the bad boy type, which is a complete 360 compared to his personality.

They're probably making out and dancing unapologetically on each other somewhere, so I decide against raking through the crowd and I lean back onto the bar, resting my forearm on the marble surface.

"You look like you're in need of a drink, sweetheart." An unfamiliar, thick British accent spoke into my ear and I scoffed, not even putting in the effort to turn to look at the stranger.

"No thanks, I can buy my own." I say. I didn't mean for it to come out as harsh as it did, but he just replied with an amused chuckle.

"Hey-" He spoke, turning his attention to someone else. " ‘l have a tequila on the rocks for this lady here, thanks mate."

"I said-" my head snapped in his direction, swallowing my words immediately as my eyes rested on the tall, suit-cladded individual with curly, unkept hair that adorned his face perfectly. He was sat beside me and I could feel myself sink into the stool as he turned his attention back onto me, his eyes - a deep virescent green - peering into my own, which probably was poking out my skull.

"I- uh - I don't like tequila." I stumbled on my words. I could feel my cheeks heat up a little bit, watching him closely as his plump, rounded lips tugged into a smirk.

"Well, that's a damn shame, ain't it?" The words fell off his tongue perfectly. I watched as he dragged his tongue over his plump, pink bottom lip, making it look almost irresistible.

I didn’t realise how long I was staring at him until I heard the bartender clear his throat, pushing the glass towards the stranger in front of me. He broke the eye contact immediately, pulling his wallet from his suit pocket.

"Are you gonna drink it, or not?" He asked, holding the drink towards me. I slowly come out of my trance and look down at the drink and take it from his hand into my own, unsure what to do but twirl the straw inside the glass.

I felt my heart pounding in my ribcage, unsure whether it was the drugs or the mere sight of the gentleman in front of me. He cleared his throat before leaning in, his lips hovering over my ear. My fingers grasped tightly around the glass, afraid I would drop it at the feeling of his warm breath on my skin, along with the heavenly smell of his cologne that filled my nostrils. It didn't help that my senses were terribly heightened.

"I'm Harry." He spoke into my ear before leaning back. I could hear him as clear as day over the music, and his accent was like melting honey.

"Lola." I replied, looking up at him. There was a glint of mischief in his eyes.

"So, Lola, can I ask why you're sat here alone?" He brought his drink to his lips, wetting them once with his tongue before taking a swig. His eyes still heavily set on mine over the rim of the glass.

I narrow my eyes at him, letting out a small scoff. "I could ask you the same thing, Harry." I retort and he shrugged. 

"My ex-fiancé just got married. Hence why I'm ridiculously overdressed." He nodded to his own words almost as he feels sorry for himself. My mouth parts slightly before closing again, not sure what exactly to say.

"Ouch. That sucks. And you actually went to the wedding?" I ask, my eyes wide with disbelief.

"Yeah. I thought maybe she'd see me and, well, you know. Change her mind." he shook his head at his own words and let out a breathy chuckle.

“I only went to the reception, I didn’t have it in me to go to the altar.”

His smile soon faded from his lips and replaced with the rim of his glass as he took another gulp. I sat quietly, observing the man in front of me who looked like he was trying to hold himself together - and that's what it would look like to anyone else, but I could see the sadness buried in his eyes and the way his smile lasted only a mere second before drowning his sorrows with alcohol. My heart ached a little, only because I knew how it felt all too well.

"Well, Harry." I break the silence, his eyes looking up from over the rim of his glass before settling it on the countertop. My attitude shifted as I felt a surge of energy, a grin finding its way on my lips.

"I'm sat by myself because my friends have disappeared and I'm trying to ignore my ex-boyfriend and my ex-best friend because they fucked each other while I was hospitalised and when I was eventually released, he had no interest in me and my best friend played it off like it was a one time thing, when really they were doing it behind my back the whole time." I let out a laugh at my own misery as Harry stared at me with his mouth slightly parted. His eyes searching my own, for what, I don’t know.

"Oh, they didn't even visit me in hospital too. I was there for three weeks, with no one but a few family members to visit. She said she was too ashamed!" I finish the sentence a little too loudly as I scoff at my own words.

"And despite everything that's happened, I'm the idiot. For not realising sooner. You'd think that catching her at his place would give me a clue, no? I place my untouched drink on the countertop, twirling the straw as I feel the mood drop once again.

We sat in silence. It was kind of nice just to get that all out, even if it’s with an undeniably attractive man that I’ve only known for a mere 3 seconds.

The silence is soon broken as Harry cleared his throat.

"Where is this guy?" I hear him mutter in a small but still audible voice. My head perks up.

"Far left corner. The tall guy with scruffy black hair that looks like it needs a good wash, and a tacky Rolling Stones t-shirt."

I watch as Harry's eyes search for him, his eyes slightly narrowed until his lips suddenly tug into a lopsided grin.

“Why are you smiling like that?” I question in amusement, a small laugh escaping my lips.

“He’s looking at us.”

I almost choke on on my spit, my eyes widening slightly at his words. My eyes soon follow his gaze, which inevitably meets a familiar - and narrowed - pair of eyes. He didn’t seem too happy.

He was surrounded by his friends, the ones I once called my own, along with Emma who clung by his side.

I turn back towards the bar and shoot Harry an amused expression.

“Yup, that’s him.” I say matter-of-fact.

Harry just stared back, his eyebrows taut, a crease forming in between as he looked deep in thought.

“Uh, Harr-“

“Let’s piss him off.” He turns his attention towards me. I let a nervous laugh escape my lips.

“Uh, what?”

“He’s jealous, ain’t he? That I’m here and he isn’t. That I’m the one talking to you while all he can do is watch you. Hm?” He questions.

I feel my cheeks heat up slightly, slowly catching onto what he’s saying. I can feel the energy surge through my body, unable to find the words as he stared at me with his moist, plump lips parted only slightly, waiting for my reply. I could only squeeze my thighs tighter together and snap myself out of the trance that this mysterious stranger continuously put me in. Or maybe it was just the cocaine talking.

“C’mon, lets make him a little jealous.”

What bar characters do you think are the most approachable/ easy to talk to for a person on the shyer side? I want to talk to them but I get a little intimidated!

Max is lovely and easy to approach. He is forever my favorite bar character.  So are Elizabeth, Hazel, Collette, Cordelia, Lola, and Sebastian, among others.  

Calloway is pretty intimidating, but he’s fun to watch from a distance if you don’t have the courage to say hello.  Kit is an absolute riot, and if you say hello to her, I guarantee you’ll smile. She’s just so much fun.

I wish James Lindsay was still in the bar, as Louis Butelli was a master at putting the audience at ease and seeking out the shy folks in the room.  He was a gracious and generous host, and I don’t think anyone is quite as welcoming as he was.

What a treat to see Zach McNally in the role of Boy Witch — which I’d never seen during his heyday in the hotel. It was wonderful to see his interpretation and all the individual nuances he brought to the role. He definitely made it his own and did a great job of “sharing the wealth” with all his interactions. 

Not sure if the addition of a Sunday matinee (the 10th show of the week!) or due to the the early hour... but the vibe in Manderley was a little off. My group had arranged for Max’s List for a special occasion and we arrived a little late (for me). Once inside, we had trouble locating the hostess to escort us to our table. And Lola and Roland were not very pleasant/helpful. Roland took to scolding patrons as they started to “line up” for the elevator. And was just downright rude in general. He must have been having a bad afternoon. Some Men in Bar work an attitude into their character, but this just seemed pissy. It made me question whether someone like that should be in charge of “audience management” at all ... not the best first impression. But I’ll give Roland the benefit of the doubt and give him another shot. Luckily, Collette made up for it in spades by being quite lovely and enthusiastic.
