Yeah. and things are TENSE AND AWKWARD there. and he does not contact bj at all. and bj does not contact hawkeye but he spends his whole entire time in korea not only missing his actual wife and child but also missing hawkeye and hawkeyes child who he doesnt even know anything about and doesn't know if it's even like. born yet. and he has NO CONNECTION TO THIS CHILD SO WHY IS HE MISSING IT AND WORRYING ABOUT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

🦚 - Are there any queer books/shows/etc. that you would suggest?

I do have some good queer books! I've been keeping track of every book I read this year so I'll give you some off that list

I just finished Wild and Wicked Things by Francesca May the other day and HOOLLLY SHIT. It has like magic lesbian Great Gatsby vibes but it is sort of dark at times so. It ends nicely though. There's a whole host of characters you will love which will hurt you. I also like the way it goes explores the magic in this world AND one of the love interest lesbians is a butch which I loved

A Tip For The Hangman by Alison Epstein is a historical fiction about the life of Christopher Marlowe, but the author has said she took a good few creative liberties so idk how accurate it is. This is also kinda dark since it delves into the espionage business in Elizabethan England and gets into some of the homophobia of the time. It's sad. It ends sadly. It made me cry. But it is very nice and I loved it

Manhunt by Gretchen Felker-Martin is the story of two trans women dealing with an apocalypse where an abundance of testosterone turns you into a raving murder beast and TERFs use this as an excuse to try and kill trans women. It's a really cool concept and it's done really nicely. It IS a bit bloody and people are horny in this apocalypse and it introduces a lot of characters which I got confused by but I recommend it. One thing I didn't quite like was how they didn't really do much regarding the trans man character's relationship with this apocalypse but what can you do, I liked the rest of it

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sáenz is a classic queer book what are you doing if you haven't read it. It's about two teen gay Latino boys in the 80s falling in love for the first time, maturing, and healing. It's a very beautifully written coming of age story that actually made me cry and that is a rare occurrence! Anyway, it's just really sweet. It's very much about finding yourself. I read this one a while ago and apparently the Stonewall Award did not tip me off that it was gay lmao but I love surprise queer books. There's a sequel but I've not read it yet

The Pants Project by Cat Clarke is another one I read a good long while ago. It's an easier and chiller read than the rest of these books (I love books about crazy people and fantasy sorry all u who dont love that). It's about a closeted trans boy named Liv trying to get the dress code at his school changed so the female uniform doesn't require skirts and dealing with how scary coming out can be. It's a sweet one, a short read, generally a vibe

The Penguin

Imma go with the first episode I watched him in, like yesterday.

Birds of a feather (I know this wasn’t the first one he comes out it, but it was just the first one that looks interesting, sue me)

Okay so, Birds of a feather starts out with Penguin stealing a bunch of paintings from a museum, stating that he apologizes for the inconvenience, but at least “I’m a man of style” I HAD TO PAUSE IT AND LAUGH FOR A MOMENT.

Anyways, so they’re taking the painting and oop- HERES Batman to ruin it.

Long story short, Oswald STARTS SHOOTING AT HIM WITH THE UMBRELLA WHICH I COMPLETELY FORGOT WORKED LIKE A GUN BUT OKAY

And then he falls down some big ass stairs and gets stuck in a chandelier, thus the police get him and take him to Stonegate.

SIX MONTHS LATER, and he’s released, saying that he’s completely reformed.

AND HE GOES OUTSIDE AND WAITS FOR A LIMO (which never shows and I DONT KNOW IF I WAS SAD OR IF I WAS CRINGING)

Eventually, a bus (very gross btw) shows up and takes him to his penthouse.

So he goes into his house, expecting a welcoming comity AND NO ONE IS THERE AND OH MY GOD I FELT SO BAD UUUGHH.

Well, actually Batman is there, saying something about how he’s gonna be watching Ozzie like a hawk. Kinda gay but aight.

ANYWAys, after Penguin offers him rat poison, he leaves and then the phone starts ringing. Oswald picks it up and there’s this bitch, okay?

Her name is Veronica, and she WANTS TO DATE HIM.

LMAO OKAY GOOD FOR HIM.

Well, turns out the only reason she wanted to date him was bc her boyfriend and her decided that they wanted to invite him to their party because it was funny?? Exciting??? Idk stupid rich people.

So, unknowing to her real motives, Oswald goes on the date with Veronica and I WAS DYING AT THIS PART BC

BC HE’S EATING FISH LIKE A FUCKING BIRD, SWALLOWING FISH. NOT EVEN CHEWING THIS SHIT.

Anyways, so he asks Veronica “I know you want something from me, so what is it?”

And she goes. “I just wanted to see you. I’ve always found you attractive. I’ve always had a thing for…Roman noses,”

I WAS SCREAMING AT THAT.

SO THIS BITCH (Oswald) GETS ALL FLUSTERED AND THEN STARTS FLIRTING WITH HER AND SHIT, and then they leave bc the owner of the restaurant hated him.

OH OH- AND THEN THEY’re WALKING DOWN A STREET AND THESE THUGS ARE LIKE “looks like money,” bc ya know how Penguin dresses.

So they go to get their money AND PENGUIN PROCEEDS TO BEAT THE FUCK OUT OF THEM WITH HIS UMBRELLA until Batman comes and ruins it.

And, thinking that Penguin is apart of that gang of thugs, he says something along the lines of “I knew you wouldn’t last very long,”

And Veronica is like “No, actually, he saved my life!”

“What-“

And she helps Ozzie stand up and brush himself off and he’s thanking her and calling her his Peach.

AND BATMANS JUST STANDING THERE AWKWARDLY AND GOES “peach?????”

YEAH BRUCE THEYRE IN LOVE. SHES GOT RED HAIR, WHAT’D YOU EXPECT.

So, they end up going on like, three more dates, and then finally the main party comes up.

Basically, Penguin is gonna gift Veronica a little gold Penguin necklace and when he’s looking for her, he overhears her and her boyfriend talking about (pretty much) how ugly he is.

AND I WAS OVER HERE LIKE 🥺🥺🥺 THIS POOR MAN UGH

So he proceeds to put some sort of mildly toxic spray in the room after exposing their plans. And then takes Veronica and disappears.

Long story short, he ends up using her for ransom for one million dollars and traps the boyfriend in an opera house. Veronica is tied to a GIANT chandelier that Penguin plans on dropping ontop of the boyfriend LMAO

But, of course, Batman ruins it (tbh unfortunately bc IMO they kinda deserved to die 🤷🏽) and Penguin is sent to jail again.

In my opinion, Penguin is honestly one of the saddest rogues, mostly bc no one likes him.

killing eve finale bad

just want to talk about killing eve for a sec bc im an upset little lesbian who never seems to shut up about fictional people and has devoted so much time to this show so here we go !!!

there is absolutely NO WAY the writers would even think that the audience would accept whatever that was. it did not make sense, the ending was very unnecessary and did not pertain to what the show and what the characters stand for. i really do not care if this was laura neal’s way of telling audiences that “this is how it works in reality” because to me, the ending was hamfisted into the definition of “i want this story to be edgy just because it’s real and people will applaud me for showing darkness right” I’M NOT HAVING IT AT ALL.

the ending of killing eve is particularly upsetting because i thought we were over these useless and horrible tropes in stories, i thought we were way past writers being completely blind to the world of those people they write about, i thought all writers of this time are sincerely open to the exchange of ideas and to the awareness of the scope their stories could fill.

it’s upsetting because you can feel the lack of heart put into the script when so many people have put every emotion into this story shown through their art and their theories and their discussions. it’s a sad thing that they can’t seem to see that when they’re literally the only ones who have the power to put all of it into being (the actors of the show could do a better job with the direction bc they are actively listening to the feedback).

i dont even want to talk about how the showrunner pulled the very very old bury-your-gays trope on one of my favorite pairings of television !! bc i dont like being upset for too long and if i think about that fact for a second, i’d just dissolve !!! (to make it short: sapphic just cant get everything cant we…)

on a basic writing standpoint: it is very bad. besides the BYG trope, the finale was just terribly written, they didnt bother going back on the show and the characters arcs to actually finish them honorably, they didnt bother with writing good build ups and they didnt bother with the pacing. they just gave us villaneve romantic scenes, a promise of a happy ending, “sike! they dont get the happy ending” and called it a day like there was no nuance in everything, there was no tension in the text, all the great scenes, the tension, desire, complexities, characters’ traits, journeys, growth reflected on the actors’ performances. this episode was HEAVILY relying on jodie and sandra’s performances.

(the way they didn’t even put much effort into writing the character death 🧍🏽‍♀️there was no build up, so the weight wasn’t entirely felt, their performances was what ultimately gave it that oomph)

all i could think about after that ending is how sorry i feel for jodie and sandra, they spent years with these characters and they understand them more than ANYONE ELSE and they know that the fans do to and yet the writers seem to not see how that passion and love for the story could actually help them write better stories !!! trust your audiences and trust anyone else involved in the creative process of something so packed with potential as THIS

i want to wrap up this post in a lighter tone because i dont like feeling upset so i just want to celebrate sandra oh and jodie comer for a sec because they gave me eve and villanelle!!!! and i’ll always be grateful for that. theyve always done fantastic performances for this show. they honor the characters as much as they honor the fans. theyve portrayed such a nuanced angle of female desire (thats between two women!), they went above and beyond the text and theyll always be the best part of the show. they played a big part in how i slowly started to come to terms with myself and thats always good to have and remember

wdy headcanons/story stuff part 2

second part to “this” in a sense, this is more for the Remorse! AU, my second main AU, or the future of the Reborn Database! AU

-Sam’s father wasn’t neglectful or abusive, he had depression and anxiety because he felt he couldn’t provide for his wife and daughter because of how badly his job paid him. He left home when Sam was only 4 so he doesn’t remember much of him, but she doesn’t hold a grudge against him.

-A couple of days after Sam met Eteled, she got really excited, because she felt she finally had a father figure in her life.

-Sam’s mother wasn’t very financially stable on her own either. But either way, she provided Sam with whatever she wanted.

-After the passing of her mother, Sam went into intense mourning. It was hard for her to get out of bed most mornings and she needed Eteled and Austin to help her wake up when she was still asleep. Kyle moved into her house for a short time to take care of her. 

-Sam couldn’t pay her house rent on her own so she had to move in with Kyle and his dad. She brought Eteled and Austin with her. 

-Austin was actually the one who helped Sam through his gender confusion.

-Eteled still holds a grudge against Kyle but it’s not as intense.

-Eteled’s anger issues still trigger, so Austin needs to hold him back sometimes for comfort. 

-On Sam’s final day of school, she brought Austin and Eteled with her on her laptop to scare Will. It worked like a charm and he shows her more respect now. Even 5 years later, he still doesn’t fuck around with her.

-Eteled’s voice glitches when he’s mad. Austin’s does it when he’s overwhelmed/stressed/sad.

-Nathan still talks to Kyle and goes to his house. He sometimes jokes around with Sam but he still remains scared of Eteled (and Austin).

-Austin can probably float because fuck gravity am i right

-Yes, Austin has a scythe, Eteled is a SMIDGE BIT jealous.

-Austin has long forgiven Eteled, mostly because being mad at him for eternity, since after Sam, Nathan and Kyle “leave”, they’ll only have each other.

-A!Austin looked up to Henry for some reason. It was probably because he was always so calm looking about everything.

-Sam listens to music with Eteled and Austin at night to help them sleep. And half of the time it’s like, intense and loud.

-Austin can pull a pen out of thin air when he needs something, unfortunately for them, xey is completely shit at drawing. So Eteled draws for them and Austin lists off details.

-When Austin falls asleep, Eteled wakes up so he can go watch horror movies with Sam and Kyle.

-Austin can go off track in a ramble if no one stops him. Eteled likes listening to it.

-Austin and Eteled don’t age.

-Austin’s voice isn’t that glitchy anymore.

These last ones are for shits and giggles but they’re still headcanons LMFAO

-Eteled has definitely meowed or whispered in front of Austin with his deep voice to throw them off.

-Eteled makes his normal voice high cuz he knows no one in the house is ready to hear his actual voice everyday.

-Kyle makes jokes that Nathan and Eteled are on sync because they normally pass out to nap around the same time.

-Austin bends over awkwardly to talk to Eteled just to make them mad.

-Eteled has called Kyle and Nathan his “sons” when he’s jokingly pissed off.

-Every time Eteled makes a mistake, he just goes “shut up im gay i dont know anything”. So Austin uses that excuse whenever they’re losing an argument to him.

-Eteled watches Sam play cottagecore games because he finds it relaxing. Austin probably drags him over when she plays horror/action games with Kyle to spite him. 

-Everyone has collectively agreed to not fuck with Sam and Eteled. And especially not Austin.

IN MY ARWEN UNIVERSE aragorn and arwen are lesbians and arwen is much more involved with aragorn’s plot because they are a dream team. tolkien knew arwen was an underdeveloped character so he literally cant blame me for this! for simplicity im going on what i would change about the movies so im also bound by that format and i am actively trying not to think about how long this post is gonna be. BUT what that au would look like is:

we still meet arwen for the first time in the 'ranger caught off (her) guard' scene, and arwen still takes frodo to rivendell because i think that's cool of her. this sets up a very collaborative and equal relationship between aragorn and arwen that will continue throughout the movies (i saw a post recently about how the scene where they discuss getting frodo to rivendell changes everything you thought you knew about aragorn from the beginning of fotr, and shows you she's Not actually a mysterious loner and she does rely on arwen as much as arwen does on her. which is a VERY sexy take)

arwen is at the council of elrond-- she doesn't join the fellowship but she's involved! she has a stake in this. also i think that she and legolas should have a silly little friendship

elrond gives anduril to aragorn in rivendell. i love the rotk scene as much as the next person but im changing this bc a) ive never liked that it makes aragorn's worthiness hinge on whether or not she has anduril, instead of her being given it at the beginning of the journey and having to grow into the kingship as she carries the symbol of it at her side. and b) the movie scene messes things up for this au so to rivendell it goes

we still have the scene where arwen gives aragorn the evenstar but with different dialogue-- we're gonna b spending more screentime on this dynamic so we are NOT going to knock out all their backstory with one scene. in fact we are not even going to let them talk about arwen choosing a mortal life-- elrond can allude to that in a side conversation with arwen before aragorn leaves rivendell, but it's not a choice that she's actually made yet

moving on from rivendell through the end of fotr, we have a flashback or two w material from the tale of aragorn and arwen so we know whats going on there (love story of all time). this is where we get actual setup of arwen's Choice that's going to drive her plot, and also more emotional setup of aragorn's kingship and her reluctance about it (we fit 'all that is gold does not glitter' in here perhaps?)

in the first half of two towers we have a couple more flashbacks or scenes to set up arwen's plotline in tt/rotk. we move the arwen/elrond tension from rotk to tt, but stop short of arwen Making Her Choice; instead she and elrond fight and she takes the army to helm's deep without his permission (knowing that she's only postponing her decision)

like i just think it would be neat if arwen came to helm's deep like pj was going to have her do. she can fight! if they were gonna add elves to that anyway she could at least have caught a ride from rivendell with them. she shows up leading the army and we have an aragorn arwen reunion and she makes friends with eowyn and she kicks some ass. she has a thranduil botfa moment of seeing all the death around her and contemplating Mortality, which sets up her rotk arc

rotk: in place of elrond bringing anduril to aragorn, we have an aragorn arwen scene where arwen decides she has to go back to rivendell and take the ship to valinor. it is heartwrenchingly sad and we all cry but we don't blame arwen for fearing death and we love aragorn for letting her go. aragorn takes the dimholt road and arwen sets off back to rivendell

now we have parallel scenes-- aragorn in the paths of the dead and arwen riding alone across the westfold. this is where arwen has her vision of old aragorn with their son (they can have lesbian biological kids fuck you). it's all extremely dramatic and a big moment on 2 fronts: aragorn claiming her title and kingship for the first time to summon the dead, and arwen realizing she's making the wrong choice and turning back around. both of them making choices that they can't unmake!

on the way back to the rohirrim arwen runs into ghan buri ghan (hi king) and secures the army's passage through the druadan forest (and to justify taking up screentime with this, the druedain probably join the rohirrim and go to gondor even though that's not really the point of them)

anyway arwen rides to gondor with the rohirrim and fights on the pelennor fields; aragorn gets there with the army of the dead; they reunite on the battlefield after the fighting ends and it is the most justified high romantic drama youve ever seen. this is where we finally get i would rather share one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone. and we parallel this with merry and pippin's reunion bc gay rights

i havent seen the extended editions in a while so i dont remember exactly what happens between pelennor and the march to the black gate. i think it's mostly houses of healing + aragorn looking in the palantir? anyway arwen is there

arwen rides to the black gate with everyone else and flies her own standard of evenstar thank you very much :) i think it would also be fun if she fired a warning arrow at the mouth of sauron instead of aragorn killing him (since thats like. a war crime?). in my mind arwen is the fiery one in the arawen dynamic and she's more likely to react impulsively to the mouth taunting them with the mithril shirt

anyway arwen charges the black gate with the others and the rest of the movie wraps up as it normally does except for arwen appearing at the coronation (instead she just finally gets to see elrond again which is great). and you get to be happy for aragorn and arwen with some EMOTIONAL ATTACHMENT behind it because youve had THREE MOVIES of their backstory and intertwining arcs instead of the bare minimum scenes! this is so much and im deeply sorry i have lesbian arawen disorder!!

Noah saying what he said abt Byler has me nervous I really relate to Mileven for personal reasons and I’ll genuinely be upset if they go the Byler route after everything - I don’t hate bylers it’s just the ship like I feel like Will deserves better and so does Mike and idk I’m just scared our babies won’t be endgame- it just sucks that all m/ f relationships are invalidated by fandom these days, when mileven have dynamics like her being an abuse survivor that is important to a lot of women. yeah.. mileven is important to me too, because its a guy who really wants the best for a girl and nothing else.. hes the GENUINE nice guy that young girls havent got to see much of growing up, a lot of het ships with awful toxic guys were romanticized and its just refreshing to see such a great guy in a m/f ship, and it really means a lot to me.. and its definitely also a mental illness thing, i relate a lot to mike when it comes to that and i think he has a lot of the same problems that i do, and sometimes people take the things that i view as anxiety symptoms and trauma and say it can only mean hes gay and that youre blind if you see it any other way... like sure, it would be fine if he was gay, but please allow people to have different interpretations..

mileven is more than just a straight ship to a lot of people, especially the thing about her being an abuse surviver, and some people especially on this app can be so disrespectful and insensitive about that.

no matter what happens in the show and no matter what ships are endgame, people need to stay respectful. 

i dont feel scared at all about what noah said, cause like i said earlier i dont think he would be saying that so casually if b/ler was gonna be canon..

ive loved every season of mileven so far, and im excited to see where the next season take them and im very hopeful. i think they’re gonna go through really really sad things, and i think its gonna be heart wrenching but i love me some good mileven angst. 

i think the only real threat to mileven endgame is if one or both of them d word.

T.V. Shows I Refuse to Watch the Last Episode of

Community: By the end of the show [SPOILERS] We are missing both Shirley and Troy (and Pierce, but who cares). I like a majority of the episodes without them despite this, but when you get to the last episode it doesn't help my sadness to be missing two of my favorite characters.

The Good Place: This episode just makes me sad and existential. I'm just going to pretend the gang stays together forever.

A Series of Unfortunate Events: I refuse to believe the show ends.

How I Met Your Mother: Just... The show's so good and the ending is so bad. The alternate ending is good, but it's not the one on Hulu. I'm enraged.

Thoughts on supernatural ending? Do you ship destiel?

Hi hello anon I'm so sad that it's ending cause I've been watching the show for the longest time like probably the only show ive watched with 8+ seasons and the end's been a long time coming though like you have to say good bye someday.

I do ship them. destiel was my first mlm ship after I found out what mlm was. And it's just their relationship transcends everything. For me now it's not even about them being gay it's more (forgive me lol) profound than that.

I love stories with subtexts and I'll probably start a whole other discussion if I start talking about destiel and subtext but like destiel is canonically right there if you look at it. They don't have to kiss on screen just to be canon, the 'I need you', 'i love you' already happened and it would be nice if they did make it more obvious just so people can stop saying it's queerbaiting (I dont like to throw around this word but yk what I mean) so yeah in short I do ship them. I have a soft spot for righteous heroes who give up everything for the person they love (see lwj with wwx, steve rogers with bucky barnes)

First sorry for taking so long, not only did I have to timeline this :) but :) my computer :) froze :) after writing like :) 2 pages :) and I had to do it again :)

So anyway let it be said, the LGBT dialogue is one of osmosis and shared growth and awareness. Some of these films will be very poorly dated, but as you (thankfully) mentioned that them being old wasn’t a *problem*, expect a lot of old stuff. Because one of the most important things to have under your belt when talking about the LGBT media representation battle is the actual journey from A to B – be that incrementalization, subtextual inclusion, text-breeching features, outright evocative and groundbreaking films at the time (which is what MOST of this list will be) and an improvement in our dialogue; let us never forget that while tr*nss*xual is considered a slur and transgender is proper, tr*nss*xual was at one point the politically correct way to speak it – things like that breach in our growing understanding of the spectrum of human sexuality. 

I *WILL* disclaimer these aren’t all romance, so if you explicitly want romance, google them and take a look if it sounds to appeal, but I’m taking this as a general cinema history plug considering what a confused mess fandom conversation about LGBT history in film or modern text as applicable, accepted or not.

Wonder Bar (1936) (I wouldn’t really call this queer cinema, but if you have the time to watch it too, I think it was the first explicit mention of homosexual engagement even if it was fleetingly brief. You might even call it Last Call style. A blink and you’ll miss it plug that was still decades ahead of its time)

Sylvia Scarlet (1936) (Again, I wouldn’t call this queer cinema, but a lot of the community takes it as the first potential trans representation on TV due to the lead literally swapping gender presentation, even if the presentation is… not what we would modernly call representation IMO)

Un Chant d'Amour (1950) (Worth it for the sheer fact that it pissed off fundies so bad they took it all the way to the US supreme court to get it declared obscene.)

The Children’s Hour (1961) (also known as the 1961 lesson to “don’t be a gossipy, outting bitch”)

Victim (1961) (The first english film to use the word “homosexual” and to focus explicitly on gay sexuality. People might look on it disdainfully from modern lenses, but it really helped progress british understanding of homosexuality)

Scorpio Rising (1964) (Lmao this one deadass got taken to court when it pissed people off and California had to rule that it didn’t count as obscene bc it had social value, worth it for the history if nothing else)

Theorem (1968) (Because who doesn’t wanna watch a 60s flick about a bisexual angel, modern issues and associations be damned)

The Killing of Sister George (1968) (by the makers of What Ever Happened To Baby Jane)

Midnight Cowboy (1969) (…have I had sassy contagonists in RP make a Dean joke off of this more than once, maybe)

Fellini-Satyricon (1969) (AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA THIS)

The Boys in the Band (1970) (This… this… this made a lot of fuss. Just remember leather)

Pink Narcissus (1971) (a labor of love shot on someone’s personal camera)

Death in Venice (1971) (This is basically a T&S prequel but whatever, based on a much older book)

Pink Flamingos (1972) (SHIT’S WILD)

The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant (1972) (The title doesn’t lie, be warned)

The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) [god I hope you’ve at least seen this]

Fox and His Friends (1975) (some really hard lessons that are still viable today, that just because someone acknowledges your sexuality doesn’t mean they give a shit about you as a person, and that some will even abuse the knowledge for gain)

The Terence Davies Trilogy (1983) (REALLY interesting history look it up, it’s sort of one of those “drawn from own experience” story short sets)

The Times of Harvey Milk (1984) (Documentary)

Desert Hearts (1985) (Pretty much the first film to put lesbianism into a good light as a true focus based on a novel from the sixties)

Parting Glances (1986) (the only film its creator got out before his death from the aids epidemic)

Law of Desire (1987) (two men and a trans woman in a love triangle, kinda ahead of its time)

Maurice (1987) (This one’s really interesting, cuz it was based on a book made about 15 years before it, but the book itself had been written half a century earlier and wasn’t published until after the guy died, he just thought it’d never get published Cuz Gay, so basically it’s based on a story written in like, the 20s finally getting screen time. It has a bittersweet but positive-leaning-ish ending without disregarding the cost that can come with it and even addresses class issues at the same time 100% DO RECOMMEND)

Tongues Untied (1989) (a documentary to give voices to LGBT black men) 

Longtime Companion (1990) (This one’s title alone is history, based on a NYT phrasing for how they talked about people’s partners dying, eg longtime companion, during the AIDS epidemic)

Paris Is Burning (1990) (Drag culture and related sexual and gender identity exploration as it intersected with class issues and other privileges explored in a documentary)

The Crying Game (1992)( I should correct this that I guess it’s more, 1992 considered, “SURPRISE, DIL HAS A DILL!” – I guess I really didn’t do that summary justice by modern language and dialogue as much as how people in the 90s were talking about that and that’s a my bad. LIKE. SEE, EVEN I CAN FUCK UP MY LANGUAGE I’M SORRY CAN I BLAME THE STRAIGHTS T_T) #90skidproblems – I guess I should call it a trans film. And this alone tells me I should go watch it again to recode it in my brain modernly rather than like circa de la 2000 understanding.

The Bird Cage (1996) (So you mix drag culture, otherwise heterosexually connected lovebirds, and then realize the girl comes from an alt-rightish house and the guy comes from a Two Dads Home and does cabaret, how to deal with the issues OF this conflict when it’s between you and your happiness, even if the fight isn’t even your own as much as it is that of the person you love. The answer is PROBABLY NOT to dress in drag and pretend to be straight, but what are you going to do? – while played for laughs we’d consider modernly crude, the fact that they even dared to approach this narrative was pretty loud)

The Celluloid Closet (1996) (Ever heard of the Vito Russo test for LGBT representation? This is based on a book by Vito Russo.)

Happy Together (1997) (Ain’t this shit an ironic name; a mutual narrative, via chinese flick, of hong kong ceding to china and an irrevocably tangled MLM pairing as a giant mirrored metaphor)

Boys Don’t Cry (1999) (one of the most groundbreaking films about trans identity at the time)

Stranger Inside (2001) (As easy as it is to recoil to the idea of “black gays in jail”, the film makers actually went and consulted prisoners and put a great deal of focus into intersectional african american issues that really weren’t around even in straight films at the time)

Transamerica (2005) (While it made a bit of a fuss for not casting an actual trans actor, it was one of the first times a big budget studio really tried to tackle it which really pushed us forward)

Call Me by Your Name (2017) (since I’ve apparently leaned really heavy old cinema throw in a modern one lmaooooo)

Also honorable The Kids Are All Right (2010) mention for the sake of the fucking title alone. 

And to any incarnation of “On the Road” by Kerouac, which

WE JUST DONT KNOWWWWWWWWWWWWW) it’s because some big money asshat bleached the content, and sometimes, it takes a while for the full script to come out and again, surprise, it’s been GAY, they just didn’t want to OFFEND anybody. *jazz hands*

Now if you wanna go WAY WAY BACK, during 191X years, a bunch of gender role flicks came out like Charley’s Aunt, Mabel’s Blunder and the Florida Enchantment.

Beyond that though I’m gonna stop here cuz hi that’s a lot. I really don’t know how much counts as “happy ending” but if I had to give an LGBT cinema rec list, that’s it as a sum. I don’t really have like, a big portfolio of UWU HAPPY ENDING GAYS because 1. there aren’t a lot of those but 2. to me, it’s not about the ending, it’s about the journey. Be that in flick or through culture and history itself.

If you want more happy ending stuff, you definitely have to look at 2010+, but it’s not like we’re in a rich and fertile landscape yet so honestly just googling that would probably serve you better since I don’t explicitly explore romance genre or happy endings to really have a collection. LGBT life is hard and film often reflects that if we’re making genuine statements about it and really representing it, and we’re just now getting to a point of reliably having the chance at a happy ending. That or maybe someone can add like “Explicit happy endings” lists after this that has more experience in that subgenre.

Also, I can’t emphasize ENOUGH to remember what was progressive then is not what is progressive now, and frankly, what some people think is progressive now they’ll probably look back on what they said and feel really fuckin’ embarrassed. See: “It’s not text because by alt right homophobic dialogue, M/M sex isn’t gay if you do the secret handshake” MGTOW kinda crazy ass dialogue or parallel narratives they inspire that encourage self-closeting and denial based on the pure idea that being gay makes you somehow lesser, so It’s Not That. Like. I am. 99% sure. At least half of the people talking in this fandom. Are going to regret that the internet is forever. And maybe hope hosting servers end in the inevitable nuclear war that will annihilate this planet.
