As we've gotten the last episode of dungeons and daddies of the year I wanted to take a bit of time to just kind of reflect on my experience with the series and what it's meant to me since I found, this will be an obnoxious long post and will be alot about my past relationship which was in short terms, not good, so please feel free to skip this post, it's more catharsis for me than anything

Up until July this year I'd been in a relationship for seven years, from the ages of 11-18 which is what I am now, over the course of those seven years I had my resolve drained out of me until I had no friends, no social media besides instagram and was steadily pulling away from my family to the point they were like strangers to me. I binded every day and endured constant transphobia and bodyshaming because I sincerely believed we were like soulmates (both trans and both outcasted) and it was meant to be.

This is all of course bad, but one of the most sinister things he did that I wouldn't have expected was he completely disabled ny ability to enjoy things. Prior to our relationship I was a phannie, I shipped Klance, I watched sanders sides religiously, I was a blossoming furry and brony and I liked these things loudly and proudly. And he made fun of and belittled these interests until I stopped participating in each and every one of them, until all my interests were either ones shared with him or ones he deemed acceptable.

And it didn't hit me how hard that followed me out of the relationship until I had to sit down and think about what I was into, and I came up totally blank, everything I liked was either tainted by memories of him or I had stopped engaging with so many years ago I wouldn't even know where to pick it up again.

And then like Mercy descending from the clouds I decided to go back through my podcasts and pick one, just one, and I happened to land on dndads. I'd previously listened to episode one with him but it had been a resounding no on his end so I put it down and never looked back. Until now. I hit play on that first episode and the next two weeks were a complete blur as I binged every ounce of content, after I caught up on the first two seasons at breakneck pace I used my meager funds to sub to the patreon and listened through everything there as well.

It was the first time in seven freaking years I'd been this excited about anything, I was going on walks as an excuse to listen to more, I was obsessively looking for fans on tiktok and posting in the discord. I was stimming more than I had in my whole life and talking again, in a lot of ways it felt like looking at myself again, I cut my hair and dyed it blonde (totally not because of Henry) I started buying clothes that I actually liked because I felt more confident in myself.

And then after unsuccessfully hunting for a community I said fuck it and redownloaded tumblr, somehow remembered the login to this account and I posted some fanart of Scary Marlowe, honestly not expecting anything to come of it, and then it got some reblogs, people liked it and I kept posting and I made moots and I talked to people and just-

I cannot thank the daddies themselves enough for bringing me into this and I cannot thank literally every single person who has ever liked or reblogged one of my posts, especially my moots, enough. You guys seriously made what was shaping up to be the worst year of my life the best year ever, and I'm not like better, it's only been 5 months and I'm very much still shaking off his effects but things are okay, O-A-K if you will, and I'm more confident that like I will be okay if that makes sense? So just like yeah, thank you, seriously, I love this fandom and everyone in it so much and this whole not-a-bdsm-podcast thing really helped me in a very very dark time <3

Favourite ship and least favourite ship?

Gravity Falls wise…

My favorite, unfortunately, would be Billdip.

I love both redemption fics and and psychological horror fics. The fact that one ship can do both either at the same time or go completely dif routes I think it pretty interesting/fun. I’m a freakin sucker for demon gone human shiz, then trying to cope (Some Devil’s a part-timer mood). And then enemies to lover’s is *Le chef’s kiss*

Least fav (besides the other rancid ships you can find in this fandom, like seriously wtf) is Dipcifica.

It’s not even because of billdip, I just, idk I always see them as close friends that shit on each other. Though, I’m grown enough to admit that they do have their cannon moments, I’m just not a fan. Also like Mabel and Pacifica! Those girls are perfect. If you’re gonna have a redemption arc (which is gonna have to happen anyway because it’s Pacifica and she’s also horrible) with her and a twin it should be Mabes! They shared a backseat, post-golf battle burrito! Like how you gonna do my girl like that 😭 Is it that I’m incapable of shipping straights?! Maybe?!

But if we’re talking about my fav ship of all time…

It’s Bubbline!

I know its Cannon so some people don’t count it as a ship but like, I grew up with them, even more so then Gravity Falls. I think young-ass me even knew there was something fruity afoot. This was like, before they came out and said it too, only subtle hints. So I kinda shipped them as a little kid (even though shipping wasn’t a popular term and I didn’t really know about gay people, weird right?). It was nice to grow up with them see the changes that allowed their story to finally be cannon.

But confession, even though I write a fanfic and do a lot of ship fanart. Im like… not a huge shipper? I mean, I am, but also like, I usually just do art for Gravity Falls, same with reading fics. I used to read Klance fics with my friend back in highschool, but Klance and Billdip are the extent of my fic library. I guess I’m just goofy like that.

Also fuck Voltron, that show could have been so great. It was good in some aspects but like… looking back on it I’m soooooo bitter 😂 but I can’t get into that.

EDIT: I also meant to say, though I don’t ship it, I appreciate Billford. I’m more of a Ford x McGucket fan myself, but Ford and Bill were fruity with each other and that’s a rock fact you can take to the bank! I don’t ship Billford, because (unless changing the outcome of the entire show) we know how that story ends, so there’s not a lot of room for fluff. When it comes to Bill and ships, I like future redemption ones the best, so therefore we have Dipper instead of Ford.

hi ik its despicable of me to be once again obsessed w klance in this, the lords year of 2022, but i saw this fanart of beidou where she had like a robot eye under her eyepatch & i had a thought. Beidou is actually Leakira's love child & is a cyborg (since they cant give birth obvi) idk maybe pidge helped w the tech or smth. But its very bladerunner & works v well w the aesthetic. Also! shes literally a pirate on a different planet (space pirate!) & the boys having a space pirate child is j so good. & ofc her parents would be a space ninja & sharpshooter:) pls enjoy this headcannon even tho im ignoring that ningguang confirmed she grew up in a lil fishing village.

Oh ho ho, you know how I feel about crazy crossover AUs :D this sounds like such a fun way to combine VLD and Genshin, and I don't see why Keith and Lance couldn't take some time off from saving the universe to raise their kid in a quiet fishing village!

How did you discover the show? I discovered it through my dad. He was a fan of the 80s series when he was a child. He even has an old toy yellow lion and Hunk out on display. Around when season 2 was still new, he was basically like “Hey, you should check this series out! I think you’d like it. There’s also a character voiced by the same guy as Finn.” so we watched it together and bonded over it.

Was it love at first sight or did it take you a while to get into the show? I fell in love immediately and I hyperfixated on it for at least a year. It's still special to me despite all of its issues, and that hyperfixation still comes and goes.

Do you have a favorite Paladin? Lance was always my favourite, and Hunk is a very close second. I think I relate to them the most.

Do you have a favorite Lion? Blue. I always wanted to pilot Blue. Maybe because it’s one of my favourite colours, and I’ve also got a connection to water - being a Scorpio, living on the coastline, being interested in marine biology, and being a swimmer? Idk  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Do you have a favorite Alien Race? Whatever Plaxum, Blaytz and Gyrgan are. I wish we got to know more about the last two, especially.

Favorite side/other character(s)? I absolutely adore Coran. Outside of Team Voltron - Matt, Kolivan, Acxa, Rizavi and Veronica, and I was also really intrigued by Lotor before they messed him up and turned him into sOUP???

How/Why did you join the fandom? I got really involved in the fandom because I just loved the show, but the only people I could talk about it with irl was my dad and kind of my sister. My old main tumblr was just all VLD for that period of time, and I mostly posted fanart and some memes, gushed about Klance, and convinced thousands of people that Mothman-fan!Keith was 100% canon. It was great.

What are some of your headcanons?

What do you think is the best part of the show? The characters and their potential was always the main draw for me. They’re still so important to me. I also loved the art style, the alien designs, and big robot vs. monster fights are always fun to me.

What were your hopes and wishes for future episodes/seasons?

I knew Keith was gonna inherit the black lion but I choose not to shut up about black paladin Allura

Getting to know everyone’s families better

Shiro speaking some Japanese, Lance speaking some Spanish, or just the Paladins sharing more human culture with the Alteans rather than just the other way around.

*cough* Canon Klance, although I also like the idea of Allurance. I just didn’t like the way they ended up portraying it. They also didn’t do a very good job of shutting down Klance and convincing they weren’t also in love lmao

Did you stick it out until the end of the show? I ended up dropping the series around season 4. I don’t remember if it was because I was already bored or too disappointed to go on, or that part of the fandom got too much, or just because I changed hyperfixations and didn’t get around to finishing it. I learned what happened next through other people’s reactions and it was so disheartening, but I finally rewatched and finished it myself recently. It was a rushed blur, but it was nice to relive the good moments.

More of my Klance!Superman AU

A/N: Guess who’s back with more Superman AU Klance? I sorta got inspired by this episode from BH6 the Series(check the episode out, it’s kinda cool!), but yeah, here’s some short fluff, courtesy of me. Also, screw physics.

The Voltron Times Office burned with roaring flames, as powerful as Superman’s undying love for his soulmate(who was trapped in said burning building). The hero flew inside the building, cleverly dodging the bright fiery tendrils licking the sides, burning them to ashes. 

Reaching the door, he immediately drew his hand back when finding the metal door handle to be as hot due to the fire.

Aha! Laser eyes! Superman had quite forgotten about that.

He concentrated, making a neat circle around the door, with the lasers. It fell down in front of him in a crumpling heap, revealing a very startled head journalist.  The caped hero ran with his super speed, impatient, sweeping up the journalist in his arms and delivering a relieved- 

“Nope. No. Not reading this” Keith pushed the laptop away, revulsed.

Shiro crossed his arms around his chest, grinning. “As you can see, somebody made fanfiction of you.”

“Fanfiction?!”

“And fanart! Look at it!”

A Tumblr link was opened, an image on the monitor currently being displayed, depicting Superman. This Superman’s eyes were a bit more...animeized?(Is that a word?), with bulging stylized muscles. And lying in his arms was a very familiar brunette…

“Lance!” Keith stood in front of Lance’s desk. The journalist grinned, and put his feet up on his desk.

“What, Super Mullet?”

“You know what. That fanfiction.” Lance snorted, walking to the end of his cubicle and filing papers. 

“Did you like it?”

Switching tactics, Keith raised his eyebrows. “I especially liked the part about the relieved kiss. Was that some sort of sick wish fulfillment?”

Lance’s eyes widened, and he started waving his hands everywhere. “Look, it was all Pidge’s fault! She dared me!”

A shout came from two cubicles south of Lance. “Hey, don’t get me into your pining problems, boomer!”

The brunette was red now, his name tag whipping around. “We’re already dating!”

“Doesn’t mean you can’t still be pining as hard as my air freshener!”

“Pining?” Keith asked amusedly.

“Ya know? It’s a term fans use a lot in fanfiction”

“I know what pining is, Leandro”

“Hey, that’s not my fault! I don’t want to use my actual name, cause safety reasons and all”

“Yeah, I’m pretty sure the voting poll between Superleandro and Leiman was not intentional too”

“Deal with it, Kogane”

Keith got through half the day before he made a silent resolve to break the teeth of anybody who dared to mention the Superleandro/Leiman fanfiction that had taken Altea City by storm. It wasn’t even that good. Hunk and Pidge begged to differ.

“Man, this story is a masterpiece!” Hunk sighed, reaching to hug the monitor. Pidge slapped his arms away.

“You do know that Lance wrote it?” Keith leaned back on Pidge’s dissection board slowly. Today was not the best day to be scratched to death by an angry pidgeon. 

“Yeah, this is surprisingly good.” Pidge gave a noncommittal grunt. “Even for him”

“I can’t believe you guys,” he said dazedly. “What is the world coming to?”

Pidge pushed the laptop to him. “You should try reading this part. It has a cool maneuver you could do.”

In this chapter of the fanfiction, Superman used his super breath (Keith didn’t know what to call it without it sounding weird) to form snow in the air and then use his laser eyes to heat it up until it became steam to blind Sendak, grabbing him from behind. Lance did have some pretty good ideas when he was not being annoying.

Keith tried to act nonchalant about the passage, shrugging. “Yeah, I guess it could work.”

Hunk groaned. “You guess, dude? This fanfic might help you get your work done faster. And cooler.”

Okay, so maybe Keith was planning on trying out that cool ice-smoke thing that Lance was writing about. That was only because he was sort of bored of breaking Sendak’s machine with his laser eyes and punching him so that he wouldn’t escape. At least, that was what the mullet was trying to convince himself.

The evil scientist cackled, shooting a ray at the hero, who narrowly dodged it.

Stay focused. Concentrating, Keith funneled a breath over to the building next to him, a rectangular block of ice forming. 

Sendak laughed at the show. “Playing Frozen, are we now, boy? Are you ready to Let it Go?”

The hero did not respond, instead chucking the block in the direction of the scientist, using his laser eyes until the melted water became a thick fog of vapor surrounding the villain. Said villain was screeching curses from his position on the death ray.

Keith followed the screeching noise until his fist collided with skin. The now-unconscious Sendak started to fall down, the superhero swooping down and catching him in his steel grip in midair. Flashes of cameras went off, the dull chatter of several reporters as they tried to push to the front to interview the hero and ask about his cool new moves.

“I got the best picture of you! Cradling Sendak in your arms, too. Wait till tomorrow’s issue comes out!” Lance excitedly took the chip out of his camera and plugged it into his laptop, a giddy smile plastered on his face

“Could you say that sentence any other way?” Keith replied distractedly, fingering the keyboard.

“Sendak crading in your arms?”

Keith sighed. 

“Also, speaking of Sendak, I heard somebody busted some cool moves today, inspired by yours truly” Lance put a hand to his chest.

“Don’t get too cocky, Leandro. I think my original method is way more efficient. And less showy.”

“Shut up” Lance grumbled. Keith smirked, leaning on the side of his desk. 

“But you loooove me, don’t you?” making a weird-goober expression that Lance suspected was a poor imitation of him. He shoved Keith lightly, grinning.

“Unfortunately, I do, even with that mullet of yours somehow.”

Longish Post about shipping

When did shipping become a competition? I’m sure I’m not the first person to point this out, but I am really curious when shipping became so competitive. I remember the first time I even figured out what shipping was, it was for FMAB since my OTP at the time was Royai and it was my first ever ship and one of my favorites. The ship never became canon officially, and I had a lot of fun reading fanfiction of it, looking at the fanart of it and just having a blast with it. I remember the friends I had at the time who were into it shipping it also and it was just fun to do. And it was the same with EdWin, it was a fun ship that I loved back then. Even the RoyEd shippers around the time I don’t remember being too mad about the other ships, since RoyEd to them was fun, something they liked, but it never had much of a shot at being canon. 

Maybe those are bad examples since in those ships the author didn’t really provide other potential love interests and so there were no ship wars. I guess another early example I remember was the Zutara shipping from ATLAB, people shipped it but generally accepted when Aangtara became a thing, and if I remember right ( Which I may not because I left the fandom due to not enjoying the show)  MaKorra shippers were relatively peaceful about Korrasami. It wasn’t really until recently in some of the fandoms I’ve been in that ship wars have been such a problematic thing. 

I have a couple of theories as to why this is, and I wanted to name a few of them and go into detail about them, and kind of start a discussion about why ship wars have become much more problematic. 

1. Characters are starting to get more love interests in a story or potential love interests. In the examples I mentioned above, I think it was pretty clear from the start Ed and Winry were going to be together, and Aang and Katara. Not anything against the authors or the couples, it was just something which was going to happen. Maybe I’m wrong, but it hasn’t been until recently that love triangles ( think Twighlight, which was the first ship war I ever saw) were a common format. With characters getting more love interests, it became easier to fight over who they would end up with since it wasn’t so obvious. An example of this is Blake from RWBY. In canon, Illia, Sun, and Adam have all expressed interest in her which would make it easier for shippers to argue about it, where before, probably Blake might have only been teased with one of them. ( This one is a bit of a stretch and I don’t know that I did a good job explaining it) 

2. Social media has made it much more possible for actors and writers to interact with the fans of a series. I don’t want to pick on RT here, but with Fair Game, for example, part of the reason the situation spiraled out of control so quickly was due to the show-runners interacting with the fans and getting their hopes up that it would be canon. Another RT example of this is that Barbara and Arryn have both expressed a lot of love for the BumblBY ship, and some shippers really latch onto that. A non-RT example would be how some Voltron fans thought Klance was going to be canon based on the support it got from the cast on Twitter. Interaction between the fans can be really cool, but it’s also easy for it to turn sour very quickly if false hope or misinformation about a pairing is spread. 

3. This one might be another stretch, but representation I feel has also added to ship wars. ( Note that I do not think representation is inherently a bad thing, and I will try to explain my take) Recently, more LGBT content has appeared in works, and that’s a good thing. The community has struggled for a long time for representation and the idea of heteronormavity is still a complex one. I remember when I first found fanfiction, it was next to impossible to find F/F or M/M content ( except for smut which is another issue, the sexualization of ships, especially LGBT ones as slash) and the media at the time had bare-bones representation. With LGBT getting more rep, it means it no longer has to be a crack ship when two same-sex characters interact. This sort of goes along with the idea I mentioned earlier of multiple love interests above, adding more potential characters without the show being flamed in large for it. 

4. Canon became more important to people, and thus they wanted their ship canon more. I remember when I was younger, the only debates I ever saw about something being canon were usually about DBZ, or anime movies if they were canon to the series. There were no real arguments about ships being canon that I can remember. But somewhere along the lines, the idea of being canon became important to people. ( Let me be clear, there’s nothing wrong with wanting a ship to be canon) and so people got competitive about if a ship had a shot at being canon. 

I’m not in many fandoms, and so I go back to RWBY. If you scroll through any ship tag, you can find very talented artists, writers and content creators, as well as probably whole walls of text about why an interaction between a character means they’ll be canon, or how the creators of the show set up this and this to be canon. Most of them are really interesting, but it goes to my idea. I think we attach the label of canon as being important, maybe more than the label of ‘ a ship you enjoy.’

If BlackSun doesn’t become canon, I will be bummed and disappointed. But that doesn’t make it a worse ship for being not being canon. The show will always have volumes of the build-up and the adorable moments between them, my favorite of which changes so much. There will always be art and appreciation posts, fanfiction and content for them. Your ship not being canon doesn’t mean you don’t have to enjoy it. 

Some of my favorite ships ( Especially OC x Canon ships) will never happen. My favorite ships for Yang ( Mercury x Yang and Ren x Yang) will likely never happen, but that doesn’t have to take away from just how much I enjoy them.

This is a loaded question, dear nonnie! Coming right out of the gates with a toughie huh?

Soukoku is a behemoth of a ship. Getting initiated into the fandom, it’s probably one of the first ships you’ll see. With soukoku fanart popping up in the bungou stray dogs tag all the time and, out of 13144 bsd fics on ao3, 5655 of them including soukoku, it’d be hard not to see the immense fanbase it has. So, we come to your question nonnie: what makes soukoku so popular?

Please note: this comes from the perspective of a relative nonshipper, and I only speak for my own opinions and observations. I’d love to hear anything you have to add!

1. Foe Yay

Foe yay is a term used by TV Tropes to define the shipping of two characters who are enemies, whether it’s because the operate on opposite sides of the law or they just don’t like each other. Overall it boils down to this: the hostile tension between them can be easily read as romantic or even sexual if you choose to read it as such.

Media is up to interpretation, so where one person sees bitter enemies, another sees a viscous round if flirtation. Neither are wrong interpretations, even in regards to the canon legitimacy of a ship- I hold this viewpoint because I believe canon can be anything you want it to be; it’s an open field to sow the seeds for creativity. So, in any situation where they are together, there’s automatically a possibility for that moment to be regarded as a ship.

2. Their history

Let’s be real: people love a story where two characters know each other like the back of their hand. While that may not be the case, it’s a pretty solid fact that of every character in the series (that’s still alive- sorry, oda), Chuuya is the one who knows Dazai best. Everyone in the ADA may (or may not have) heard about his time in the mafia, they may have heard him talk about his darker days, and they can see what he’s capable of, but they weren’t there with him. Chuuya was.

Chuuya is the only one that’s still around who, through being partnered with Dazai in the past, knows that darker side of him the best. Akutagawa, as his subordinate, only knows the version he saw as an underling. Chuuya saw more of the real him as an (almost?) equal. Dazai isn’t very open with his personal details; he never was. But there are certain things Chuuya doesn’t need told like others might because he was there, and that sets the foundation for a nice potential ship.

3. Their partnership

I don’t remember the exact phrasing, but soukoku was and is described as an ultimate powerhouse, an unstoppable duo. In order to be part of a team that rises to such infamy, there has to be a certain bond, one where the members can work together and trust that the half of the job that isn’t theirs will get done efficiently. 

Not only do they have that certain bond, one where they can trust the other’s strengths and play off them to emphasize their own, it’s almost like the two characters were made for each other - in a way. In terms of their abilities, Chuuya’s could legitimately kill him when he uses it, and he has no way to stop it. The only way it can be stopped is through Dazai- he’s dependent on Dazai if he wants to perform to the best of his abilities (slight pun intended). Dazai, however, would be incomplete in the team without Chuuya; where he’s tactics and intimidation, Chuuya’s more the powerhouse and action guy he needs. While capable independently, the two are better together. They allow the other to perform just a little better than they would alone.

4. Their trust

Because of this partnership, the two of them trust each other. Chuuya has literally admitted this to Dazai (yeah I see you “I used Corruption because I trusted you” squad) They know what the other is capable of- Chuuya is especially aware of Dazai’s darker habits he tries to hide- and Dazai knows how Chuuya will respond and trusts him to be loyal and dependable as he’s always been.

5. Their current bond

William Shakespeare once said (something along the lines of), 

“Love me or hate me, both are in my favor. If you love me, I’ll always be in your heart…If you hate me, I’ll always be in your mind.” 

What that means is that any strong emotions, whether positive or negative, towards a person will put them in the forefront of your mind. When you have a crush, you often think about them all the time, are reminded constantly of them, and have strong reactions when they are mentioned. When you hate someone, you tend to think about them all the time, are reminded constantly of them, and have strong reactions when they are mentioned. Thank you copy and paste.

Love and hate have very similar “symptoms,” so it’s easy to see why enemies could be viewed as lovers in denial. Let’s be real, denial is a sexy, sexy concept to play around with in fanfic. Who doesn’t love a good slowburn and some classic mutual pining?

Even now, in the current timeline, Dazai lives to pester Chuuya constantly, who is the perfect target with his temper and confrontational attitude towards Dazai. You know what that is? Chemistry. I’m not talking strictly romantic, either. As two characters, they go well together: they interact and bounce off each other in an entertaining and believable way.

Overall, soukoku is what I see as the most fundamental ship in any fandom. For Durarara, it was shizaya, for Voltron, it was klance- the whole “rivalry” thing seems to attract shippers, and for good reason. Soukoku has a few unique spins to it to help shippers make their point, and I know I’ve missed a lot of them in this quick little ask. Still, I hope this gives you an idea as to why I think it’s so popular!

Hi it's me again. So I have to ask, why do fans hate kallura so much? What's with the overhyping of klance? Like I can't scroll through fanart/posts of kallura without it descending into klance or even lotura territory. Y does kallura have such a small fanbase?

Oh, my friend, this question breaks my heart. Partially because I’ve loved Kallura since 1984 and it’s the ship closest to my heart. But also because, after many conversations with my good friend @blkjessrabbit, the answer isn’t one I want to give. 

So for those of us who watched either Defenders of the Universe or Voltron Force, Kallura was a gimme coming into the VLD series. We knew that, based on franchise history, it was bound to happen.

What we didn’t expect was the new fan reactions. We certainly didn’t expect to be called homophobic, or belittled personally over something as trivial as a romantic ship. Our joy over watching their relationship unfold, along with all of the standard tropes a destined couple experiences, we blinded ourselves to the ugliness of the VLD fandom.

First, and worst, was the racism. I learned late in the series that some “old school” Kallura fans had abandoned ship. It seemed that Allura’s makeover didn’t sit well with them. I understand that some people take issue to changes in their favorite characters, but as we’ve seen recently in the media it tends to swarm around WOC. Between the theatrical version of Hermione, the latest Ariel, and Allura herself, it seems to be an issue for audiences to accept black women in a traditionally white role. If Allura had remained white but was a green eyed brunette I wonder if the response would have been so negative. 

Secondly, there’s the set who is overly interested in gay men, but not necessarily “representation” as they like to say they are. By the time most new fans began watching the show they’d likely already been exposed to fanart of some male/male ships. Most likely they went into the show expecting they were endgame, if not already an established couple. While I’m totally fine with LGBTQIA rep, I’m not cool with achieving it by bullying fans and showrunners alike. 

When DW backed away from delivering this my guess is it had more to do with the rabid fans than it did with their need to sell merch to little boys. Several options were ignored by the fans, after all. Hunk and Coran were largely ignored (despite Coran having had it hinted at through memories of his time with Alfor.) Lotor, when he appeared, was mostly pushed off on Allura. 

Again, racism seems to play a role in fans wanting to pawn a princess off to the man who was committing genocide of her people supposedly in the name of peace. Lotor/Allura was very much a pairing between a man who was given everything because of his identity, and a woman who lost her identity along with her home and her people.

Then there were the EPs who, in my estimation, were so intent on proving their alliance with the LGBTQIA fandom that they ignored their own lore. The story began to deteriorate into chaos. They had an obvious dislike for certain parts of the fandom over blackmail and unveiled threats, but wanted to do something that echoed the final moments of LoK. It’s like they threw on blinders to everything else. 

Lotor was killed because they had to be edgy. But Allura? They ripped her character to shreds then threw her to the sharks. Even Lauren complained about Allura, despite the fact that SHE WAS THEIR CHARACTER. They’d once bragged about introducing a black princess but discarded her once they realized there were more “woke points” in circling their wagons around a lone gay man (whose character they’d planned to kill at the end of season two but were forced to write back into the show because he was popular.)

And you know what? They took a calculated risk that almost paid off, were it not for the epilogue. When you consider that the biggest outrage was over the kiss at the end (and not from dads of boys, mind you) instead of over the lead character’s sacrificial death it kinda drives home the idea that racism was a big part of Kallura being shunned. 

Sorry for the rant but I hope I answered your question, although it’s not how I’d like to answer it. I wish there was some other, less hurtful reason behind this. And I’ll admit that it’s not necessarily the reason for every single person who didn’t like it. Still, it seems to be the most common one and that’s a damn shame. Hopefully next iteration we’ll get showrunners who are much better!

I don't want to trivialize people actually suffering from the illness but s8 honestly feels like PTSD to me. I have never been this emotional over a show let alone this emotionally broken. But Voltron has been almost like a coping tool and it feels like s8 destroyed the one happy spot in my life.

Yeah not ptsd, but those characters meant a lot to a lot of people. Like, the size of the VLD fandom was insane to the point where now people claim aspects of it are dying, but I still see a bunch of new fanart and fics every single day and talk to people who do still love it. That’s the ‘dead’ version of it. It was wild before.

A lot of people saw themselves in the characters, because they were initially so well done. And no one was ready for how bad S8 was going to be. How could we be? The ending of S6 was amazing and heart-wrenching. From Keith and SHiro’s battle, to Lotor’s fall (since it really seemed like there was going to be redemption and stuff for him since both Allura and Keith didn’t want to leave him behind at first before Keith sided with the majority), to the sacrifice of the castle, to bringing Shiro back. S4 & 5 were boring and forgetful with a few good character moments and beats, but when it got rolling, S6 was amazing. 

Early S7 had good moments to it. There still seemed to be some potential there. The second half of S7 was...bad. Like it had its moments and all but even then, there was no way we could have seen S8 coming with how badly it butchered characters. Not to mention we know for a fact that it was edited very, very late in the game. As late as it could be. And I’m still confused about what happened with Lotor because the VAs for him and Allura were implying that he’d be a bigger thing and that Allura and Lance’s thing wasn’t supposed to last (I’m still convinced that those two klance conversations were supposed to frame Lance and Allura’s relationship. Lance being sad there was supposed to be because of a breakup.) 

Anyway, I’ve ranted and gone on about all of this a billion times over. S8 sucked hard to the point where VLD went from purposefully being promoted as an LGBT+ show to needing trigger warnings. It was spiteful.

With how big the fandom was, and how high the general reviews were, Netflix had a potential cashcow on their hands, but then it crashed and burned hard. So it’s understandable to be a bit upset looking back at it. 

I’m not so much upset as I am incredulous. I still have no idea how you fall out of touch with your fanbase so much while still interacting with them, but they sure as fuck did it.

i - like the movie industry - have been on more of a rewrite kick than an original idea kick for like. the last year, and i frequently think about what i would want to rewrite next after i’m done with i’m in hell, if i ever actually finish writing i’m in hell (the ideas just keep coming folks) and i think what’s next would be That’s Rough Buddy

it’s an avatar the last airbender fic that i got the idea of from some klance fanart i saw once, so i kind of just started writing it?? and had no plot in mind aside from like. they’d get engaged at some point. don’t get me wrong, i DO like the plot i eventually stumbled across, but i think i would want to pace it out a little bit better if i ever chose to rewrite it - i’d take a little longer for them to get together, then longer before they kinda sorta break up, and WAY longer before they get engaged. i know theres a lot of time skips involved in the fic, but its still way too fast in my opinion

that was a lot of negatives so here’s some positives: i LOVE the first (and only?) time nico goes into the avatar state. i think it would be super cool if i threw in some blood bending on will’s part. i really like the chapter where nico gets kidnapped and sent back to the fire nation. i also think that this fic has some of the riskiest stuff i’ve ever written - ie. nico and will basically getting caught doing it, nico trying to kill himself, etc.

it’s a good fic, and i was very proud of it when i wrote it (which is usually the case for my older stuff, and then i either forget about it or it gets cringey to me for some reason - this one got cringey and idk why) and tbh i kind of just want to be proud of it again. too bad i’ll probably never have time to rewrite it

yes, they queerbaited us with shiro as rep. not in the sense that he wasn't queer but in the sense that they hyped us up for his relationship with adam, made us think we were gonna see an adashi reunion, and we ended up getting like 90 seconds top of LGBT content over the entire series.

no, I highly doubt they did it intentionally. yes, they did admit they fucked up and apologized several times. yes, I appreciate the apology and I understand that they're human beings and people make mistakes and overlook things sometimes. like they said, they never meant to make anyone feel baited. they really thought they were going to get a good response. lauren called voltron a "learning experience" in the open letter to the fandom after s7. I think she meant learning experience in general ofc but I think she also meant they've learned how to and how not to do LGBT rep in a show.

but I will absolutely be taking any promises of LGBT rep from lm and jds with a grain of salt. i will absolutely be watching their future works from afar and not getting myself too invested until the series ends and I can watch it as a whole while knowing what to expect.

I dont think they MEANT harm but y'all...they fucked up. they know it, and they apologized. it shows maturity that they apologized in that open letter after s7 and at the final nycc panel, and again, I appreciate that.

but I would rather they have not said anything about LGBT rep, ever, and just let gay shiro be a nice surprise. then, the minimal rep we received would have been wonderful and a nice warm surprise instead of a huge disappointment. it was only a disappointment because it didn't live up to the hype they made for it. and I know the hype was partially due to marketing they had no control over, but it was absolutely partially them, too.

they didn't promise LGBT content in LoK and canon korrassami ended up being a nice surprise even though it was minimal. that was how they SHOULD have done shiro's sexuality if they knew it was going to be a small thing. I would rather they have kept their lips zipped about LGBT, not announced gay shiro ahead of time, and just it be what it was when seasons 7 and 8 came out.

again, I dont think the bait was intentional, but it was bait all the same.

you are not crazy or too sensitive if your feelings are hurt/you feel baited by this show. you are not a shitty person if you just dont trust them right now. dont let people tell you otherwise. it's okay to take a step back from their work and wait to see how their next show plays out before you get involved.

i really do love voltron, even though s8 was confusing af, seasons 1-7 were LIT. I enjoy bits and pieces of s8 but mostly it was a let down. not only because of rep, just because a lot of things didn't make sense to me and a lot of the problem solving just felt way too convenient.

like I feel like every conflict in the plot was resolved way too easily and/or in ways that didnt make sense. and I feel like most of the characters' futures in the credits didnt really match up to those characters personalities. specifically lance, hunk, and keith.

lance staying on earth with his family, spreading allura's message to carry on her legacy? makes perfect sense, valid af. lance becoming a farmer? not so much. I feel like he would have been better suited as teaching classes as a pilot instructor at the garrison or smth similar. altean lance still gave me whiplash and left me confused af but he looks so damn 👌👌👀👀🙌🙌😭 with his cute ass altean marks that I'm just gonna let that one go for the sake of aesthetic.

hunk becoming a chef? not ooc necessarily but I feel like he would have been better suited as a diplomat. y'know. ambassador to earth sort of thing.

keith aiding in recovery efforts and being a humanitarian (...alien-itarian...? idk). okay let's be real we all knew this edgy boi has a soft ass heart. I think hes just mature enough now to let his walls come down and not be afraid of caring ig. which is sweet and nice and all. but I feel like he wouldnt...JUST be doing that. like he would still want the battle and the adrenaline and the badass mf fight sequences. that's kinda his Thing.

shiro marrying a rando? I would have preferred adam to not die and them end up getting back together once shiro returned to earth. i just feel like there was no reason to kill off adam? shiro has already suffered so much, what was the point? but i'm not gonna hate on curtis bc we dont know jackshit about him and for all we know he could be a bombass dude. shiro looked happy tho and it's better than him being forever alone so I can hesitantly accept that ig. but on one condition and one condition only: their ship name must be shirts. if their ship name is not shirts then I dont want it

allura's death was pointless. i havent seen anyone disagree with this one so far. her life was full of suffering and then she died. like can we all just agree she was done dirty and it was entirely unnecessary.

that's not it at all.

they could have made this season so amazing and still not have made klance canon. they could have left me disappointed in no klance but still happy because the finale made my heart go dynamite BOOM. I could have ended the last episode with no canon klance and still been smiling because the plot was bitchin' and the characters were all alive and happy.

but they didnt, so I wasnt. it just...wasnt a good season. it had good aspects, yes, but as a whole? meh.

season 8 was poorly handled. it really was. it had so much potential to end with EVERY character having a positive ending and still have an actual satisfying conclusion to the war. I know they wanted to show how heavy and serious and heartbreaking the war actually was, but you can make an emotional, heavy finale without killing off a main character and leaving her main character love interest lonely and grieving. like im sorry killing allura and leaving lance sad and lonely was not necessary at all to the plot it just flat out wasnt. they did those characters dirty and they did allurance shippers even dirtier.

allurancers cheered seeing their ship canon then had it ripped out from under them and my heart honestly grieves worse for my allurance and allura stan fam than my klance fam. they did y'all so wrong and i'm sorry it had to go down like that.

sheith shippers got fucked over when all that development and relationship and growth culminated into basically nothing in the final season. like as a broganes stan even i was taken aback by the sudden radio silence between them so I cant imagine how let down actual sheith shippers feel.

us adashi shippers? obvious. adam's death was not necessary. and dont tell me it was to show the heaviness and realness of death in war because vld does NOT have a track record of dead characters staying dead. they could have at least gave us some mild development with shirts (lmfao im so sorry but shirts) and let us see more of curtis as a character. like...literally just two 60 second scenes would have been nice. they could have easily fit that in.

us klancers got fucked over by unnecessary parallels to canon ships. they could have made it a cute platonic friendship in s8 and let us enjoy it and proceed to enjoy fanon klance without all those blatant parallels to shay/hunk that just left us confused. and the parallels in earlier seasons. like why did you have to make so many parallels to romantic moments and romantic tropes if it was platonic. why did you have to go and do that. what was the point.

s8 could have ended in such a way that shippers of every ship in the fandom were satisfied with the finale because their faves were treated right and the plot was fire. it had so much potential in the first half and could have been so damn good.

it wasnt though. the entire thing was so confusing and nothing about it felt like vld. It feels like a spin off or a reboot. I dont like s8 as a whole and I doubt I ever will. it might grow on me in time but I'll never fully like it, y'know. everything about it felt so tilted and off and just wrong.
