That feeling when you get a plotbunny for a fandom where you don’t even go, IN A CONLANG, and you don’t have anyone who knows it so it’s just pingponging around in your brain
#I never played ar tonelico but I read LPs way back when#and once in a while my brain latches on to the worldbuilding and the SUNG CONLANG PROGRAMMING LANGUAGE OF MAGIC#(seriously that string of words is catnip for me)#and wants to do something with it#this time it’s… well whenever my brain sees 'XYZ group can’t be boys/girls because reasons' I go 'okay but consider: trans people'#so now my brain is giving me vague ideas about a trans dude reyvateil who tries to hack his Singing voice#since from what the wiki says it sounds like the Tower handles how it sounds when someone Sings#and I’m knee deep in the wiki for something I’ll never write trying to figure out what to hack and how#doesn’t help that all the Hymmnos I know is some of the emotion words#so all my brain gives me is 'holy shit if he gets to Sing the last bit in his new voice and it starts with 'was yea erra''#(which I guess gives me some extra corner points in that an IPD reyvateil needs to be involved and it’s not him since that’s standard)#(because for the change to be implemented mid Song it’d have to be executed sequentially and you can’t do that with standard)#(and if he’s the ipd he’d want his Song to have as much power as possible and not bother with emulation)#(I guess there’s a bit of plot there in that he tries on his own but fails and something something the value of community)#(maybe part of the failure is that his approach features emotion sounds that his actual feelings clash with due to his voice)#(since the change would only go through at the end)#(so I guess the patch would in part be porting the lines he struggles with to New Testament of Pastalia so the other person can take them)#(and run them as they’re Sung)#I HAVE NEVER EVEN PLAYED THE GAMES

TXT on Maturing, Packing for the Act: PromiseTour, and Skin Care Essentials
Tumblr media
Snapshot! is a Teen Vogue style series where we ask artists to take candid pics and share a glimpse of their style and beauty routines. In this installment, K-pop boy group TXT takes Teen Vogue behind the scenes at the New York stop of their Act: Promise tour.
When the members of Tomorrow X Together (TXT) aren’t attending Fashion Week — whether on the runway or in the front row — they’re jet-setting on tour. However, it's an equally chic occasion — and their latest tour, Act: Promise, is proof of that.
Across the United States tour dates, the concerts’ carefully crafted stages encapsulated the K-pop group’s five-year journey in just a few hours for fans, known as MOA, to experience together. The styling plays a major role in doing so, from their grand entrance with “Deja Vu” to their low-key looks for the youthful anthem “Cat & Dog.”
While the members — Soobin, Yeonjun, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Hueningkai — make it look seamless on stage, touring isn’t an easy feat. Preparations for concerts may start months before in Seoul with fittings and dress rehearsals but continue until the very last outfit change backstage and even when the members are doing skin care after the show. To learn about it all and soak up the backstage buzz, Teen Vogue caught up with TXT before their sold-out show at Madison Square Garden in New York City on June 1, 2024.
Back in 2019, TXT was first introduced to the world with bright colors, playful patterns, and skinny jeans with their “Crown” music video. Now, the group is known to have a more elevated style with nods to punk and grunge aesthetics. “Because it's been some years since we debuted, I think I would describe it as a journey of growing and being mature, so we definitely see maturing changes in our aesthetics,” Taehyun tells Teen Vogue via an interpreter.
“I wouldn't say it was a radical change, but it was more like a gradual change and gradual being mature and growing. I would say after our second LP, our style definitely got a little more mature than before,” he adds, referring to their album The Chaos Chapter:Freeze, which features the hit single “0X1=Lovesong (I Know I Love You).”
On this tour, the setlist visits each of the group’s chapters, but rather than in chronological order, the arrangement and coordinating outfits explore a motif. “Each show has five sections, and each section has a distinctive theme,” Hueningkai explains. “Our look and our outfits also changed according to the theme.”
For their grand entrance, the group emerges on the stage clad in lace cloaks while wearing white trousers and gray blazers, accentuated by harnesses and chain links, combining their princely charms and pop punk sounds. Within the same section, the members make a quick outfit change to pay homage to their South Korean culture. “We have the song ‘Sugar Rush Ride’ rearranged with Korean traditional instruments, and we also dress in Korean traditional costumes,” Hueningkai says, referring to the hanbok.
The next section, marked by the hit songs “Magic” and “Trust Fund Baby,” showcases the members' more casual side. They are clad in relaxed-fit jeans and designer graphic tee shirts. Whereas they typically wear baby blue varsity jackets with bedazzled wings for this part of the show, for that weekend, the group wore New York Rangers gear, a nod to Madison Square Garden’s home team.
As the group splits up for their unit stages, the youngest members, Beomgyu, Taehyun, and Hueningkai, shed the jackets and rock out to “Quarter Life” in simple ‘fits. Meanwhile, the eldest, Soobin and Yeonjun, change into belted black and white tank tops, respectively, for their performance of “The Killa.” Promptly after the duet and before “Back For More,” they put on sparkly black jackets and rejoin the youngest members who are already wearing the same. Taehyun favors this part of the show for its versatility. “When the light gets dark, we can change the [jacket] really quick, so it gives more variations to the outfit,” he confesses.
As Taehyun notes, the members switch into a more grunge look shortly after. “We wear leather jackets for the third section where we perform ‘Puma.’ Because I think the leather jackets go very well with us all and it just gives off a really hip vibe, I like that one,” Beomgyu says.
The last look of the night comes with the encore, a time the group utilizes to engage and make more memories with MOAs. Their choice of clothing highlights this. Swapping their more extravagant costuming for more casual, fun looks, the group wears hoodies and T-shirts from their merch collection for the tour with classic blue jeans and a simple accessory or two. This look is Hueningkai’s favorite as the comfy, casual nature suits him.
When asked to describe his personal style, “hoodie and jeans” is Hueningkai’s response. His style prioritizes practicality, just like Taehyun, who adds, “I would say I like various styles, but I would say I would choose comfort over fashion.” Fitting for the early June climate in NYC, he explains, “For example, I don't wear long sleeves in hot weather.”
“Like Taehyun said earlier, I like a variety of stuff, but recently, I refer to the street fashion in the UK or Japan,” Yeonjun says. His off-stage looks this tour have consisted of chunky sneakers, layers, and baggy silhouettes for an effortless yet cool look. “I definitely refer to his style. I sometimes try to follow his style,” Hueningkai says in admiration of the eldest.
Soobin and Beomgyu lean towards a more preppy side. Both seem to have their wardrobe essentials figured out. “I like clean-cut style,” Beomgyu says. “Recently, I've been purchasing a lot of wide-leg pants.” Soobin adds, “I also like neat and clean-cut style, so most of my items are button-up shirts.”
Having a practical sense of style does have its benefits on tour. At this point, it seems like the TXT members are pros at the art of packing to be on the road for prolonged periods of time. “It doesn't take that long to pack because we're constantly on a tour,” Beomgyu says. “Sometimes I just leave my luggage packed and just add a little more items to them. For example, a few tops, a few bottoms, a few shoes. But I make sure that I do have my personal makeup tools or makeup items, like cleansers. For those things, I make sure that I do have my own stuff.”
For Hueningkai, it takes a little bit of research. “When I pack for a tour, I definitely make sure that I check the weather because you want your clothes to fit the weather there,” he explains. “For example, if you're traveling to a city where the temperature is high, you make sure you have short sleeves and really light materials.”
Yeonjun’s technique is classic for a fashion lover. “I overpack because I like clothes,” he says. “But I also make sure that there is a little bit of room, considering that you're going to shop when you go to a new city.”
The TXT members are equally sensible when it comes to picking essentials for their carry-on bags. Hueningkai, like many other K-pop idols, notes the importance of comfortable shoes when off the stage and says slippers are his must-have.
Soobin and Taehyun’s travel essentials allow them to have some fun when they can while traveling. Soobin selects a tablet, particularly one loaded with dramas. (On this tour, he chose to watch Queen of Tears.)
Staying active seems to be on the mind for Taehyun. “For me, it's a bathing suit because you stay in hotels when you're on a tour, and sometimes you find really nice swimming pools there,” he says. Similarly, his form of self-care on tour is exercise, so he says he carries a resistance band so he can work out anywhere, even in the hotel.
As for skin care, the group stresses mastering the important basics. “I've recently started to practice this, but I make sure that I wear sunscreen before going out,” Taehyun says. “So that’s my beauty tip.” Also, taking the late spring weather into account, Hueningkai adds.“For me, it's to keep hydrated, so drink a lot of water.”
While the hype and excitement of a concert may culminate before the show, it’s the youngest of the group, Hueningkai, who reminds us that a post-show routine is just as worthwhile for both artists and fans alike. “It's important to really remove your makeup thoroughly,” he says. “So I use cleansing oil — all those makeup remover items. And make sure that you moisturize your skin after that.”

Library Tips For Magic Practitioners
As a Missouri librarian, I've gotten to know my library district pretty well. So here are some tips for you!
Tip 1: Dewey is your friend.
And by that I mean the Dewey Decimal System (a more in-depth list is in that link) is your friend. It breaks down as follows:
000: General Knowledge (encyclopedias, newspapers, almanacs, etc)
100: Psychology & Philosophy (feelings, logic, friendships, etc)
200: Religions & Mythology (Bible stories, Native American myths, classical mythology, etc)
300: Social Sciences & Folklore (families, career, money, government, etc)
400: Languages (English, Spanish, American Sign Language, grammar, etc)
500: Math & Science (arithmetic, animals, rocks, plants, fossils, etc)
600: Medicine & Technology (inventions, machines, farming, health, etc)
700: Arts & Recreation (crafts, painting, music, games, sports, etc)
800: Literature (poetry, plays, novels from other countries, etc)
900: Geography & History (countries, biographies, etc)
If you're looking for ghosts, divination, and witchcraft specifically, look around 133. That's where I've found most of my magic-based books to borrow. You'll also find books talking about people's near-death experiences or reincarnation around this point.
While fiction technically falls in the 800s, most libraries will have it separate from nonfiction. You may still find things like poems or memoirs in the nonfiction section. Some libraries will have the biographies separated into their own section. A few libraries (at least here in Missouri) will have state-specific sections where you can learn more about local stuff.
Tip 2: There are computers and printers to use.
If you can't research something at home for literally any reason, getting a library card will often grant you access to using the computers and printers in the library.
When using the printer, some libraries will charge based on how much ink you use, other libraries will charge based on how much paper you use, and other libraries will charge based on some other criteria.
Be aware that you lose access to these if you reach a certain level of overdue materials or money is charged to your library card until the materials are returned/paid for or the money is paid off. Luckily, librarians are here to help you and can tell you what's missing.
Tip 3: Libraries have more than books.
Seriously. The main branch of my library district has 3D printers, telescopes, gaming systems to use in-building, and more stuff that I didn't even pay attention to because I was scrambling to learn the behind-the-counter stuff. Feel free to ask us for something and we can see if it's in-county for ya!
Audiobooks are often available on CDs and in the form of Playaways, which are like MP3 players with a single book on them. You will need a wire-connected set of earbuds or a wire-connected headset and batteries. Some libraries sell earbuds, but not batteries.
Large Print books will often have their own special designation as LP, but more often they have their own shelf sections. You'll find a surprising number of Westerns there, but there are Large Print nonfiction books.
Tip 4: Requesting materials.
Not finding something you're looking for? Ask the front desk for help! In Missouri, we have the Missouri Evergreen system, which means we can borrow books from all over the state* on the topic you're looking for.
If we can't find it (or you're in a library that doesn't have such a monumental reach), then you can often fill out a book request form. We will then do our best to order the book for you - but be aware that it could take many months, and most of the time, people will cancel their order of the book well before our budget catches up or we even have time to get the book processed and integrated into the system. Patience is key when ordering a new book.
*At participating branches - not every library district in our state is part of Missouri Evergreen.
Tip 5: Self-checkout is a thing.
At least, it is here in Missouri. If you don't want to interact with the front desk, there are often self-checkout stations for books, DVDs, audiobooks, et cetera. Even my middle-of-nowhere branch has one!
Unfortunately, this won't work for other things, like updating your card once it expires or resolving monetary charges (which will both send you to the front desk).
Tip 6: Search the new shelves.
Some libraries like mine will have specially-designated "New Shelves", where you can find a lot of the most recent releases. If you're trying to find something in a particular number that you saw on the search but can't find it, it may be on the new shelf. These get cycled out whenever new books come in, which may mean that you have several months' worth of new releases to dig through.
In short, I hope this helps you in your search through the library! Best of luck to you!
~Jasper

Last night I won two games of MTG with my new deck and I'm still cackling over how they both happened.
These are both lengthy explanations so. If you don't care, don't click below lol. Short version though is that I pulled some dumb bullshit to come from behind in both games in spectacular fashion.
Game 1:
I place Curse of Echoes on the player to my right. Basically, any time he played a certain type of card, everyone at the table could copy the effect with a new target. Fun stuff.
Several turns later, he played Tempt with Vengeance for 11.
For the uninitiated, that means he suddenly had 11 little elemental creatures on his board, and was giving us all the offer to ALSO create 11 little elemental creatures. If we chose to do so, he would create another 11 little elemental creatures.
For those following along at home, this also triggered Curse of Echoes, and the short version is that we all ended up with a whopping 101 little elemental creatures.
And then it was my turn. and I had a whopping... I think 16 life left? Wasn't having a good time since my partner whooped everyone's ass. But I had A Plan.
I threw 20 little elemental dudes at each of the remaining (4) players. That should have left me with 20 but I miscalculated a bit and forgot one of them had an effect that buffed up anything attacking him, so I ended up with 40. Still, fine.
I used Claws of Gix, which I hadn't had much opportunity to use until then, to basically eat 13 of them - this left me with 29 life, and 27 creatures on the board.
And then I played Rakdos Charm, and triggered the ability where everyone's creatures deal 1 damage to them. 100+ damage to the table, with me left laughing my ass off in the smoking crater. Success.
Game 2:
My partner had pissed me off mightily and I was having trouble with mana, so I just kept throwing Ghoulish Impetus on the biggest baddest thing on the board so it would do my dirty work for me. The good side of this is that it kept my opponents slapping each other and not me. The downside is that everyone kept healing for the amount they were slapping each other for, but... well, that was a problem for Future LP.
So after my partner was summarily wiped off the face of the board, I started trying to figure out how I was going to unfuck my game. Because uhhhh I had 23 life left, and everyone else had like double or more that amount. Additionally, I had a time limit, because once everyone else was out, the guy with Ghoulish Impetus on his commander (haha) was going to be allowed to start aiming it at me (oh no.)
And then, somehow, the answer fell into my lap in the form of the unlikely combination of Tree of Perdition and Brash Taunter.
For the uninitiated: Tree of Perdition can swap its "toughness" with an opponent's life total. This effect does not have a duration, it just is like that now. I checked. Brash Taunter is indestructible and throws any damage it receives back to a target player. I can also pay some mana and tap it to make it exchange damage with any other creature.
So. The player to my right (with the big bad) ends his turn. At the end of his turn, I tap Tree of Perdition to switch his life total (69) with its toughness (13.) I then paid the cost to make Brash Taunter fight my own creature, which did 6 damage to him, leaving him at 7 life with no defenders. On my turn, I swung at him for 8.
Once he was out, Ghoulish Impetus bounced to another creature, this time the player to my left's commander, which unlike the other's did NOT have flying, so when she was forced to swing at me, I just kept blocking her with Brash Taunter and reflecting the damage back to her. Brought her down from 43 to 0 in like. 2 turns? 3? Slower than I would have liked, but still. Success.
Much bullshit. Many shenanigans.

On this day... - May 7th
On this day Led Zeppelin performed:
+ 1973 : Jacksonville Coliseum in Jacksonville, Florida, USA
Tumblr media
“Led Zeppelin performing here for the first time in three years must mean more to the kids in this town than anything that happened in their local lives all year. […] I had heard that on a good night Led Zeppelin is magic, IS Rock ‘n’ Roll. Where have they been all my life? To attempt to rationally explain what they did onstage, how godamn good they were, how it was a total celebration of Rock ‘n’ Roll… well, words don’t come easily. Thirteen thousand kids at the Jacksonville Coliseum – a sold-out capacity audience. […] Their arms were outstretched, their hands were waving in the air, girls were sitting on top of boys’ shoulders and shaking their long hair wildly, back and forth. […] They played some songs from the new LP and some from the older ones. One song rushed into another for two-and-a-half hours with such urgent, intense brilliance. This has GOT to be what Rock ‘n’ Roll was all about; what it is meant to be. […] There were no intermissions, no waiting, no tuning up, no bullshit. Just music. Just gorgeous Rock ‘n’ Roll music at its most desperate. […] It was impossible to be a part of that experience and not watch, and listen with a total awe. We don’t have bands like this, you know. YOU don’t have bands like this… but you do have Led Zeppelin. And they know what they have. They know the high they can achieve.” – ‘Led right from the start’ by Lisa Robinson (Disc)

R.E.M. - Capitol Theatre, Passaic, New Jersey, June 9, 1984
Don't go back to Rockville — go to Passaic, instead! Just about 40 years ago, R.E.M. was touring behind their classssssic second LP Reckoning and they'd graduated permanently from small clubs to theaters like the legendary Capitol. Pretty soon, these jangle merchants would be too big for that venue, even!
This excellent quality recording and performance was taped for MTV's "Rock Influences: Folk Rock" episode. Inspiring! In fact, if you go over and watch the video, you'll see R.E.M. welcoming OG folk rockers Roger McGuinn and John Sebastian onstage during the encore. Do you believe in magic? Eh, kind of. For further hijinks, here's a pre-show interview with the MTV-ers, Stipe looking totally suspicious (and dreamy).
But what did Peter Buck think about MTV back in the day? "It really stinks! It's basically the most AOR radio with pictures. They play the same five groups every hour ... by and large it's really boring." He also goes onto badmouth The Byrds. Say it ain't so, Pete!

Los Campesinos! — All Hell (Heart Swells)
Tumblr media
youtube
In a way, 2013’s NO BLUES was the end of a particular version of Los Campesinos! and for reasons that had little to do with their personnel changes over the years since 2006. The septet is far from the first (or last) band to experience the music industry leaving them for dead in a ditch for a lack of profit, and sadly also not the only ones to get one of their best albums caught up in that moment. So, everyone returned to (or got) day jobs and although they never exactly split up, it took some time to determine that, yes, Los Campesinos! was still really going to keep going. But if 2017’s excellent Sick Scenes was proof of concept of Los Campesinos!’s vitality and potential, the new, even more self-motivated ethos has led to both the longest break between albums yet and (recency bias be damned) their strongest LP.
Readers of Dusted don’t need to be reminded that financial success does not necessarily correlate with any particular merit, but that the entirely in house All Hell (self-financed, self-produced, on their own label) wound up as their first UK top 40 record (14 with a bullet!) is at the very least a testament to how many people were waiting for this record and how satisfying they found it. In Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie’s classic music-as-magic comic book Phonogram, one of the main characters describes Los Campesinos! (before they’d even put out a record) to another as “They’re never going to be big big. But they’re going to be big to some people.” Increasingly, it seems that those people have found them. If you go to an LC! show in 2024 fully half or more of the crowd are kids who were not listening to records when Hold on Now, Youngster… came out in 2008, a delightful product of the band just resolutely doing what they do for close to 20 years now.
All Hell is a stirring reminder of what that is, exactly. Their Bandcamp page still describes them as “The UK’s first and only emo band,” and that fine blend of sarcasm, sincerity, standoffishness, insight, and a certain love of starting an argument still sums up some of frontman Gareth David’s authorial voice (although it doesn’t include his incredibly vivid and compelling way with both political and romantic heartache and longing). Guitarist and (here) producer Tom Bromley continues to write incredible songs for David to drop punchlines and emotional haymakers over, and has also burnished this into easily the best sounding Los Campesinos record to date. At this point these seven members have been playing together since 2014 and can turn on a dime and nail pretty much any melodic/emotional register they need to, harsh or comforting, anthemic or plangent.
Fans are likely to draw comparisons to 2010’s Romance Is Boring, often considered a high-water mark. The last three records followed the same straightforward format: 10-11 songs, 40-42 minutes. Romance Is Boring was their most complex, lengthy, and interconnected record, and there’s an ambition here that makes them feel like siblings (possibly partly the result of having more time to build up material). The 15 songs here in just under 50 minutes, with three numbered tracks splitting the record into rough sections, feels sprawling and expansive after the tighter organization of the last few.
You can really feel that extra decade-plus in the structures, songwriting, and sonics of All Hell, but the polish and compositional sophistication here don’t belie a lack of fire. “The Coin-Op Guillotine” is easily the gentlest opener they’ve ever done; there’s bleakness there (“I think I’m right, I don’t think it matters”) but the refrain still centers on the kind of community and solidarity that they’ve been trying to practice from business/concert practices on down: “if you’ve got a cross to bear/call my name, I’ll see you there.” And even there it’s still about our current dystopia, and the title clearly refers to more than just the arcade game.
And sure enough, the following “Holy Smoke (2005)” immediately snarks that “nowadays it’s Live Laugh Love and Listen to Death From Above” over a headlong sprint (one of many places here where drummer Jason Adelinia is a crucial force). Even the magnificent “Feast of Tongues” (which arguably boasts a couple of the band’s best choruses to date), which swells from pensive backing “ooh”s and strings to one of the biggest, hardest hitting climaxes here, specifies that the title refers to when “we will feast on the tongues of the last bootlickers.”
As always, one of the challenges of writing about Los Campesinos! (as well as one of the joys of listening to them) is there are simply too many quotable lines, especially if you’re interested in the ways they refer back to their own history (dropping the “please” from the Romance Is Boring-era “can we all please just calm the fuck down?” as a teeth-gritted acknowledgment of how much less reasonable those they’re addressing have gotten since then) or just a good joke (if, say, “do you still have that one tattoo?/that’s how they work, of course you do” doesn’t work for you, another one will be along soon). And as much as All Hell is rich in the band’s traditional strengths, there are still moments of expansion. The crunching switchbacks of “Clown Blood/Orpheus’ Bobbing Head” are maybe the most aggro they’ve ever been, and the sweetly gloomy “kms” features Kim Paisey taking lead vocals for the first time.
Given the way the last two records have ended with some of their heaviest, weightiest songs, as they kick into the room-levelling angst of “0898 HEARTACHE” it feels like just that sort of crescendo. Instead, All Hell actually ends with the humbler melancholy of “Adult Acne Stigmata.” It’s the closest Los Campesinos! have come to an acoustic ballad, with multi-tracked Gareths sighing “it’s all hell, we know too well/it’s all hell” in the background. From another band, it might risk pathos or bathos; from Los Campesinos, it’s practically comforting. In the midst of inferno, we can all sing, and thrash, along.
