1st quarter readings:
Futuristic violence and fancy suits by Jason Pargin - Insane ideas, interesting characters, violence and funny.
Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson - A sci-fi classic that is not my favorite.
The first cate in space ate pizza by Mac Barnett - Short and fun reading for a rainy afternoon.
Parable of the sower by Octavia Butler - An eerie fiction too close to reality. Everyone must read!
Binti by Nnedi Okorafor - Great flow, lovely character, just a bit too naive ending.
Wool by Hugh Howey - Loved every single chapter of this book.
Starter villain by John Scalzi - Cats that can communicate with humans, interesting twists and funny scenes.
The dispossessed by Ursula Le Guin - A bit slow, but then it hooks you and when you understand the title your brain explodes.
Merlin’s tour of the universe by Neil deGrasse Tyson - I like the idea of questions and answers but the selection could be better.
Have you read any of these?

Oh, quanto amiamo i bambini.

The First Cat in Space and the Wrath of the Paperclip is so very weird and entertaining
The First Cat in Space and the Wrath of the Paperclip is so very weird and entertaining #comics #graphicnovel #kidslit #ncbd
4.5 billion years ago . . . an AI paperclip named CheckMate was designed to fix grammatical errors. Exhausted of correcting “who” vs. “whom,” it concocted a plan to eliminate spelling errors once and for all. All life-forms would be turned into something beautiful, practical, perfect: a paperclip. Thankfully, it was buried in the debris. Long forgotten . . . until it was accidentally freed. Now…

Adventures in Librarian-ing
This week I've been reading How This Book Was Made by Mac Barnett to the Grade 1 to 3 classes.
When I announced the title of the book to one of the Grade 1 classes one of the kids raised their hand and asked me if I'd ever written a book.
"Kinda," I replied, "My mom's a children's author and she wrote a dictionary for kids. I helped her with keeping track of things like which words were being added to the dictionary. Because there are a lot of words out there ("There sure are!" one of the kiddos agreed) and no dictionary can have all of them, right? So she had to pick out what words to put in and leave out."
^ I worked on this dictionary. It sold over a million copies.

I was just wondering if there are some BIZARRE facts about books or publishing that you've learned over career. Like.. things that made your mouth drop when you heard them?
I don't know if this qualifies as "bizarre" or not, but I definitely heard it and it was seared into my brain forever. (Two things, actually, but they are related!)
Margaret Wise Brown was obsessed with fur, to the point that she insisted that The Little Fur Family be bound in a real fur jacket. (There's a deluxe edition that is still bound in faux fur, and even the board book edition has a little faux fur tummy on the character!)
Anyway, the first edition WAS bound in real rabbit fur, and some still exist but they are quite expensive, because the majority of the books were stored in a warehouse, and moths got in and ate them.
Part two of the story: At around the same time as LFF, illustrator Clement Hurd and his wife brought their then two-year-old son Thacher Hurd (now a celebrated children's book author-illustrator in his own right) to Maine to visit Margaret. She created what she thought was an amazing little fur room for the child, and in fact it absolutely traumatized him. I heard him tell this story at an event one time and it was SO FUNNY but also my mouth definitely dropped!
She was a real character, and I highly recommend the superb picture book biography of her, THE IMPORTANT THING ABOUT MARGARET WISE BROWN by Mac Barnett, and the grownup biography AWAKENED BY THE MOON by Leonard S. Marcus.
(Bonus fun fact, not to do with MWB! The original WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE was called WHERE THE WILD HORSES ARE, but Maurice Sendak realized he was bad at drawing horses.)

I last read...
The First Cat in Space Ate Pizza by Mac Barnett and Shawn Harris
what I wanted: just a fun little graphic novel
what I got: a quirky space adventure
what I thought: The characters didn't wow me, but the story was super fun regardless! I rate this 3.5 out of 5 cats who didn't go to space.

10. What was your favorite new release of the year? isaac, this was honestly probably my worst ever year for keeping on top of new releases (there's a new gd sandra newman this year that i didn't get to for god's sake) but i did read a few! the favorite was probably isabel cañas' vampires of el norte, which wasn't unbelievable by any means but it got me to read like a 400 page book in like 2 days so if i can include the category of middle grade graphic novels, which i frequently do, there were some excellent sequels that came out this year!! including madeline mcgrane's the accursed vampire: the curse at witch camp and mac barnett & shawn harris' the first cat in space and the soup of doom!
4. Did you discover any new authors that you love this year? this was also not a banner year for discovering new authors lol! i tried to discover some new authors but wasn't so successful in loving them ...if i can include middle grade (lol) i read a wonderful novel about a nonbinary figure skater written by a nonbinary figure skater called ana on the edge by a.j. sass and i know this author has some other gendery middle grade books and i would love to check them out! OH and i did love discovering hampshire college alum chen chen through his poetry collection your emergency contact has experienced an emergency
24. Did you DNF anything? Why? i almost certainly did DNF some things but i don't keep track of that :(
19. Did you use your library? i did use my library probably more than ever before!! because i work there!! and the economy!! out of 56 books read so far, 18 were library books! wow!!
21. Did you participate in or watch any booklr, booktube, or book twitter drama? i dont really get off on that but i was side eyeing some of the r*becca y*rros drama because apparently she's written ~military romances in the past and that is maybe not the genre to be in if you want to write meaningful, empathetic content about, like, afghanistan
thank you isaac
