Make it Stick
It was an interesting read. The writing style of foreshadowing and repeating their points and examples was different but engaging.
I think I just know quite a bit of the techniques already but not always consistently or consciously.
I can recommend the book to anyone who wants to learn more about learning and study more efficiently.

I think this person on reddit summed up the youtube adblocker situation perfectly. my reaction to this is not "oh man guess I'll watch ads." its, "well, I guess I'll just do something more productive with my time." I highly doubt any adblock user is going to willingly go back to watching ads. so what actually happens is youtube loses a functionally tiny amount of its userbase--because adblockers weren't even losing them a significant amount of money in the first place(!)--and a bunch of adblock users move on to something else. what a fantastic waste of time and effort
#did you do it? did you stick it to your userbase? did you show them whose boss?#did you make them watch your eight fucking unskippable ads in a row? did you?#a.txt

Based on a real thing that happened to me and my sister (me as Stan and my sis as Ford)
She had held my foot up for a while trying really hard to pull me up thinking it was my arm, we laughed about it almost instantly after but it was still scary.
Be beach careful people! Waves can easily pin you against the sand if you don't dive at the right time.
#gravity falls#stanford pines#stanley pines#young stanford pines#young stanley pines#stan pines#ford pines#based on a true story#gravity falls comic#for any curious about āmaking dinosour eggsā that's also a very real thing me and my siblings did#obviously not real dinosour eggs but we'd essentially make sand snowballs and pretend they're eggs#we'd get a ball of wet sloppy sand and keep rolling it in our hands while we'd take it to the dry soft sand further up near the dunes#we'd then bury them and make sure to pat them down so they'd keep form but not too much that it'd break - it was a very delicate and tediou#then after a while we'd uncover them and ta daa!!! hence the ādinosour eggsā part of it because we'd āfindā the eggs#although we did sometimes forget where we burried them so we'd put sticks or shells as reminders

Donāt mind me I just like to see him go bananas about cartoonish Autobot rules
Maaanā¦..if Prowl was in tfp he would spontaneously combust at least once a day
#maccadam#transformers#prowl#tf prowl#there is no Prowl in Tfp so Optimus can pull all kinds of heroic cartoonish bullshit#and only Ratchet actually calls him out on it#but Ratchet also kinda has soft spot for Optimus#Op does sad eyes and Ratchet is like okay okay sorry I understand#Prowl would see the whole situation and lose his marbles immediately ahahahah#lol hey hey you. two people who read tags. imagine little au realquick#Autobots find the escape pod with Smokescreen right#but thereās two bots instead of one#back on the base humans look at the new guys and like#Smokey is fun and energetic and eager for heroism and adventure#and then thereās Prowl. The final boss. The ultimate MOM.#He makes one step into base and immediately starts scolding Optimus and everyone except for Ratchet#agent Fowler listens to him talking and decides that Prowl is his favorite autobot#damn. Prowl would SO not approve keeping humans around. Kids would hate him#but also he would be completely right. Because by keeping humans that close Autobots basically show that the humans can be used as leverage#against them you know.#He would immediately suggest getting rid of kids and hiring actual competent adults instead. So all hacking can be done by professionals#and all infiltrating can be done by people who are at least old enough to drink you know#yea kids would haaaate him so much#he would also build make all kinds of little annoying gadgets bc I have read Covenant of Primus and tfp Prowl is smart like that#he would be going around sticking trackers on every enemy he fights#and then triangulating Cons positions by the coordinates where their signals stop tracking#bc Nemesis blocks them#He would also keep sending Smokey to ghost through walls and steal all kinds of valuable shit from Megsy#they would be such a menace together#man this is getting kinda long I should probably stop

Every time I see Elder Scrolls elves with human looking eyes and facial features, I take 100 points of psychic damage.
People who cannot handle their big beautiful tilted eyes and brows, non-white sclera, protruding browbones, narrow faces, and sharp chins do not deserve them. They are not supposed to look like generic fantasy elves, and that is what makes them so great. They are supposed to look alien.
#the elder scrolls#oblivion#morrowind#dunmer#bosmer#altmer#one of my favourite things in the remaster#thank god they made them alien looking#thank god dunmer have black and red eyes#but still every time I see mods or fan art or ocs that makes them look human or give them human eyes i take damage#unless they're meant to be half human or something#people who can't handle how beautifully alien elder scrolls elves look don't deserve them#they are perfect the way they are#i pray Bethesda stick close to the morrowind/skyrim designs in tes6#but at least the remaster made them look more alien than the original Oblivion#especially the dunmer#if they just stick with the Skyrim design for tes but give some bosmer horns/animalistic eyes and make the men shorter#then the elves are pretty much perfect#please todd don't make them more human looking

twins in time continuation of that blue doodle comic thingy, but fidd is forced to take care of stan when Ford gets into the portal stuff, leaving him behind.

another thing fantasy writers should keep track of is how much of their worldbuilding is aesthetic-based. it's not unlike the sci-fi hardness scale, which measures how closely a story holds to known, real principles of science. The Martian is extremely hard sci-fi, with nearly every detail being grounded in realistic fact as we know it; Star Trek is extremely soft sci-fi, with a vaguely plausible "space travel and no resource scarcity" premise used as a foundation for the wildest ideas the writers' room could come up with. and much as Star Trek fuckin rules, there's nothing wrong with aesthetic-based fantasy worldbuilding!
(sidenote we're not calling this 'soft fantasy' bc there's already a hard/soft divide in fantasy: hard magic follows consistent rules, like "earthbenders can always and only bend earth", and soft magic follows vague rules that often just ~feel right~, like the Force. this frankly kinda maps, but I'm not talking about just the magic, I'm talking about the worldbuilding as a whole.
actually for the purposes of this post we're calling it grounded vs airy fantasy, bc that's succinct and sounds cool.)
a great example of grounded fantasy is Dungeon Meshi: the dungeon ecosystem is meticulously thought out, the plot is driven by the very realistic need to eat well while adventuring, the story touches on both social and psychological effects of the whole 'no one dies forever down here' situation, the list goes on. the worldbuilding wants to be engaged with on a mechanical level and it rewards that engagement.
deliberately airy fantasy is less common, because in a funny way it's much harder to do. people tend to like explanations. it takes skill to pull off "the world is this way because I said so." Narnia manages: these kids fall into a magic world through the back of a wardrobe, befriend talking beavers who drink tea, get weapons from Santa Claus, dance with Bacchus and his maenads, and sail to the edge of the world, without ever breaking suspension of disbelief. it works because every new thing that happens fits the vibes. it's all just vibes! engaging with the worldbuilding on a mechanical level wouldn't just be futile, it'd be missing the point entirely.
the reason I started off calling this aesthetic-based is that an airy story will usually lean hard on an existing aesthetic, ideally one that's widely known by the target audience. Lewis was drawing on fables, fairy tales, myths, children's stories, and the vague idea of ~medieval europe~ that is to this day our most generic fantasy setting. when a prince falls in love with a fallen star, when there are giants who welcome lost children warmly and fatten them up for the feast, it all fits because these are things we'd expect to find in this story. none of this jars against what we've already seen.
and the point of it is to be wondrous and whimsical, to set the tone for the story Lewis wants to tell. and it does a great job! the airy worldbuilding serves the purposes of the story, and it's no less elegant than RyÅko Kui's elaborately grounded dungeon. neither kind of worldbuilding is better than the other.
however.
you do have to know which one you're doing.
the whole reason I'm writing this is that I saw yet another long, entertaining post dragging GRRM for absolute filth. asoiaf is a fun one because on some axes it's pretty grounded (political fuck-around-and-find-out, rumors spread farther than fact, fastest way to lose a war is to let your people starve, etc), but on others it's entirely airy (some people have magic Just Cause, the various peoples are each based on an aesthetic/stereotype/clichƩ with no real thought to how they influence each other as neighbors, the super-long seasons have no effect on ecology, etc).
and again! none of this is actually bad! (well ok some of those stereotypes are quite bigoted. but other than that this isn't bad.) there's nothing wrong with the season thing being there to highlight how the nobles are focused on short-sighted wars for power instead of storing up resources for the extremely dangerous and inevitable winter, that's a nice allegory, and the looming threat of many harsh years set the narrative tone. and you can always mix and match airy and grounded worldbuilding ā everyone does it, frankly it's a necessity, because sooner or later the answer to every worldbuilding question is "because the author wanted it to be that way." the only completely grounded writing is nonfiction.
the problem is when you pretend that your entirely airy worldbuilding is actually super duper grounded. like, for instance, claiming that your vibes-based depiction of Medieval Europe (Gritty Edition) is completely historical, and then never even showing anyone spinning. or sniffing dismissively at Tolkien for not detailing Aragorn's tax policy, and then never addressing how a pre-industrial grain-based agricultural society is going years without harvesting any crops. (stored grain goes bad! you can't even mouse-proof your silos, how are you going to deal with mold?) and the list goes on.
the man went up on national television and invited us to engage with his worldbuilding mechanically, and then if you actually do that, it shatters like spun sugar under the pressure. doesn't he realize that's not the part of the story that's load-bearing! he should've directed our focus to the political machinations and extensive trope deconstruction, not the handwavey bit.
point is, as a fantasy writer there will always be some amount of your worldbuilding that boils down to 'because I said so,' and there's nothing wrong with that. nor is there anything wrong with making that your whole thing ā airy worldbuilding can be beautiful and inspiring. but you have to be aware of what you're doing, because if you ask your readers to engage with the worldbuilding in gritty mechanical detail, you had better have some actual mechanics to show them.
#finx rambles#worldbuilding#for writers#honestly I quite liked the asoiaf books I read#it's a well-constructed story! it's a well-constructed world too on its own merits#none of this stuff about grain and spinning is actually important to the story#the problem is that grrm himself seems to just. not realize this#and goes about blithely insisting he's created an extraordinarily realistic fantasy world where all the tax policies make sense#he has not!#he has invited people to tear his creation apart if they can and! it turns out! they absolutely can!#this shit's got no tensile strength! it's made of glue and popsicle sticks!#you're not supposed to put weight on it

Extra doodles I did while making the comic if ya'll want some of it:

Jason travels to an alternate universe where Bruce only cares about being Batman. He took in each of his kids to serve the mission, not be his children.
Now, faced with alternate versions of his family, Jason has to grapple with the fact that his Bruce does care, that he is his father. Because the man in front of him now, trying to send him home, isnāt even close.
#batman#jason todd#bruce wayne#redhood#batfam#batfamily#this bruce went one of two ways 1) running his kids into the ground and theyāre basically unrecognizable to jason or 2) worked them so hard#they couldnāt take it and left the business entirely and heās completely alone except the JL which doesnāt like him but he is necessary#sure crime is down but bruceās crusade is just that an actual crusade because he treats his sons like soldiers and everything comes second#to the mission. i donāt even know if damian exists in this universe because the idea of bruce having romantic relationships is laughable#although here he might be more closely aligned to talia because theyāre both mission oriented and having a legal heir for their literal#legacy might appeal to him idk. just that jason shows up and itās like his brothers have military ranks instead of names. none of them have#real jobs or even friends because they eat sleep work live at the manor and would never leave the batcave if it werenāt for public#appearances. itās insane to see dick without his personality or tim who really does act like a robot and not a person. i donāt know if steph#cass and duke would stick around for this (or alfred for that matter iām 50/50)#but when jason does get back everyone is shocked that he sticks around the cave and manor for a couple weeks checking in on everyone and#making the effort to do things unrelated to mask business. he has to write a report about the incident and he struggles to even put into#words how wrong it felt. his arguments with bruce also skew slightly because he canāt claim bruce doesnāt care in general just that he#doesnāt care about him or express it enough or in the right way. a far cry from the usual spiel and bruce is concerned so they talk it out
