The Bakers and the Breakers

Once, there was a bakery nestled downtown in the big city. It's name was "Maker's Bakery".

For decades, almost a century, Maker's did the job of baking fresh bread for the citizens of the city. Everyone loved their bread. They would stop in every day to see what the bakers were cooking up. People near and far would travel to experience the quality of Maker's legendary bread. All-in-all, a staple of the city's history.

One day, a new bakery opened up directly next to Maker's. They went by the name of "Atria".

Atria was a trendy establishment that sold it's bread with the allure of it's new "Flash-Bread" technology. They could bake bread at 100x the speed of a normal bakery. They boasted that the quality matched that of traditional bread as well. And they sold their bread for slightly less than the bread at Maker's.

People from all over the city took a trip to Atria's. They NEEDED to try this new miracle of the modern era.

For a very small crowd of people, they agreed that Atria's bread was of impressive quality. The slightly smaller price was also enticing as well. These people began to make plans to make Atria their new bakery of choice.

For many others, they had various concerns with the quality of the bread. Some loaves seemed to have been overcooked. Others under-cooked. Some had concerning spots on them. There was one customer that found that her loaf was entirely hollow on the inside. And in general, the entire bakery had a slight... "off" smell.

The owner of Atria reassured these concerned customers that Atria is "a NEW establishment, and it will take some time to get the quirks ironed out of the 'Flash-Bread' machine." He promised that things would only get better from here.

A few months went by. Maker's Bakery began to see a small dip in customers. Concerning, but not unexpected. They had new competition, after all. They would just have to up their game and try some new things to get people to choose them over Atria.

And so they did. They experimented with new methods of preparing bread that would increase the quality, drop the time it took to bake, and make their bread stand out. This somewhat worked. Though it did little to improve their profits.

A few weeks later, the manager of Maker's noticed some interesting things.

Every time they would try a new bread recipe, Atria would have a VERY similar bread show up on their menu as well. In fact, Atria's bread seemed almost uncannily close to Maker's bread. It was slightly quirkier, but it was unquestionably taking inspiration from Maker's style.

This intrigued the manager. He wasn't sure what to make of this. Was he just being paranoid? Could it be that they both had the same good idea at the same time several times in a row? NO, of course not. It's just too much of a coincidence.

He's never seen Atria's owner visit Maker's. Atria's employees also hadn't stopped by, as far as the manager knew. Did Atria even HAVE employees? Because the manager had never seen a single employee in the last few months.

It was only a hunch. And a paranoid one at that. But the manager decided to take a VERY close look at their security footage.

The manager looked through a large amount of footage from previous nights to see if anything weird went down. What he found shook him to his core.

From the camera mounted in the back of the building, he saw a masked man sneak up to the back door and break in using a set of lock picks. The masked man proceeded to scurry in and head to the manager's office. He rummaged around in the manager's notes, and took pictures of all the newest recipes.

The manager was gobsmacked. How had NO ONE caught this before?

He had a strong suspicion of who this masked man was. However, he wanted to see it with his own eyes.

The next few nights, the manager camped out in his car across the street, around the exact same time as when the masked man had shown up before. On the third night of staking things out... there he was. The owner of Atria.

Atria's owner had exited out of the back of his bakery and quietly shuffled over to Maker's. On the short walk over, he took his mask out of his pocket and slipped it on. Seeing this, the manager got a devious idea.

"I wanna confront him head-on" thought the manager of Maker's. "I'll hide around the corner in the alley. When he sneaks out of Maker's and walks back to Atria, I'll jump out and catch him in the act."

The manager got out of his car and positioned himself in the alley, ready to spook Atria's owner out of his shoes.

As expected, Atria's owner exited Maker's and began walking back.

"HEY!!!" screamed the manager.

Atria's owner jumped in surprise. He then quickly ran back towards Atria and hopped back inside. Not wanting to lose his chance, the manager followed and quickly grabbed the backdoor before the owner could lock it behind him.

Atria's owner sped his way through the corridor to get away from Maker's manager. The manager followed close behind, not breaking nearly as much of a sweat as the owner was. The two of them made it into the kitchen.

"STOP RIGHT THE-" screamed Maker's manager. But he was stopped by the horror of what he was witnessing.

Inside this kitchen was not an oven. Not a stove. Not baking utensils. Not even a microwave oven.

It was... computers.

Computers with scanners, printers, fans going off at full blast. Technology that was far outside what most people could comprehend.

The screens were plastered with all manner of bread recipes. Some were familiar to the manager, as they were recipes from other competing bakeries across the state. There had to have been recipes from all over the nation in this system.

The manager noticed that one of the computer screens... had HIS recipe on it. The recipe for one of his loaves of bread. Specifically, last week's special. And sitting in the printer bed of that system... was bread. A copy of HIS bread. A copy that had several gross flaws in it, but a copy nonetheless.

"You- ....you ....clone bread here." the manager said.

"...yes. Yes I do." replied Atria's owner.

"...do you ...do you even have a staff here?" the manager asked.

"...no. " said the owner. "My cloning machine makes it so that I can operate here without any staff. That allows me to sell bread at a much cheaper cost."

"Not MUCH cheaper" joked the manager. "Your bread prices are, what, a few cents off from my prices? Not exactly a bargain. Plus, you got some nerve to sell bread THAT expensive when it isn't even real bread."

"A lot of people don't know the difference." replied the owner. "And hey, that leaves most of the profits for me and my company."

"Well, dream of those profits all you want. You won't have much profit after I get you arrested and sue the pants off of you!" yelled the manager.

"Oh come on." said the owner. "Is that really necessary? Do you really think you even have a case? I'm making faux bread based on some recipes. It's not like you're the ONLY person who gets to make bread. You're just being selfish."

"SELFISH?!" screamed the manager. "None of this is your work! It's the work of hundreds of other bakers around the country! Including ME!

I spent YEARS learning how to make bread! And then YOU come along, steal the recipes I'm experimenting with, shove it into your computer, and make a profit off of it?! And even if you were handing it out for FREE, you're still grifting me and undercutting my business! Have you ever actually baked bread even ONCE in your life?!"

"HEY!" yelled the owner. "I'll have you know that I know exactly how to make bread! I just don't have the skills and expertise to do it as fast as YOU can. My skills fall into the tech sector. And I choose to flex THAT. I don't think YOU would ever understand that."

"Everything you sell is fake!" said the manager. "It's all a bunch of dolled-up starch balls! Do you think you're really gonna get away with screwing over real bakeries with your trash?"

"I already am, buddy." the owner huffed. "Maybe you missed it, but the world's changing around you. This is the future. You can't stop innovation, no matter how hard you try. You either adapt, or die out.

Tell you what. I'm not a scumbag. And I want everyone to join me in my vision of NEW BREAD. So you're free to use my equipment any time you want. Take notes on it even. Build an exact copy of it in your bakery. I'm not selfish like YOU."

The manager looked at Atria's owner with a look of confusion, disgust, and rage. "Take notes. ....take notes on screwing over other businesses to suit your own? Tearing down other people so that YOU can benefit? Use equipment that's as nasty and soulless as a rotting corpse?"

"Hey, if you don't wanna innovate, that's fine." mocked the owner. "Just don't come crying to me when my industry blows passed you and makes normal bakeries obsolete.

OH, but if you wanna avoid becoming obsolete, might I recommend a new industry? I hear Italian restaurants are BIG nowadays. They got bread in them, so you'll probably feel right at home. And from what I've heard from tech experts, Italian dishes won't be clonable for at least another decade. Probably. Tech moves fast, so I might be off one or two years. But HEY, there's plenty of room for variety in Italian food. Should be a safer bet than a bakery."

The manager stared, dumbfounded. ".....you want me to stop baking bread... let your awful machines take it over... and move over to a food business that I REALLY don't care about? Spend another decade of my life perfecting a completely different culinary field? All to have your tech friends come crush that too?"

"Yeah!" said the owner. "Now you're getting it!"

Diana! Thank you for sending these asks! ☺️ I'm so sorry it took so long to finish the reply, but I just kept adding to it and researching! Some of it was just loosely established lore and I had to delve deeper.

7. Describe your MC’s family.

Hellendil comes from a family of mixed background. His father is a muggle blacksmith/metal worker with Lenape ancestry and his mother a Welsh witch who found her calling as a metal charmer and jewelry maker. She was a world traveler after Hogwarts, frequenting worlds fairs and expos in search of materials and new techniques to use in her craft. She met her future husband at one such expo showcasing new technology and techniques as well as suppliers from around the world. With the industrial revolution underway, he needed to find new avenues for his own profession to stay relevant and these fairs were an excellent place to learn.

The two hit it off during one of the panels and continued writing to one another after returning home. He eventually sent a letter to her father asking for her hand with an engagement gift of raw garnets and amethysts he'd collected for use in her craft. When they married, he moved to Wales and worked under another smith until the proprietor eventually retired and sold him the business and property. The pair raised their four children in the house next to the smithy with help from her parents.

Hellendil's older sister is about 5'11" with dark brown hair. She is a more stern and straightlaced individual than her older brother, but also did not inherit any magical ability. As with all of the siblings, she was taught the arts of blacksmithing and jewelry making by their parents. She is a strong and dedicated individual and chose to follow the blacksmith path to a career. She apprenticed to another smith to learn more before she would eventually take over her father's business. With the rapid changes in metal working and technology at the time, she also frequently travels to attend technology fairs as her father did to learn new techniques and be prepared to adjust her work and the business to those changes.

Hellendil is the youngest of four children in the family. His eldest sibling, his brother, is 6'4" and wears his black hair long as well. He is a squib and a bit of a trouble maker in his youth in quest to be the center of attention. He wished to pursue a career as a dragonologist when he was growing up. Out of concern for his safety, the family talked him into an archaeology career instead, a career he is quite happy with after all. He currently assists with archeological digs in Egypt and frequently writes to his little brother about the finds and traces of magical history they are uncovering. He's constantly telling Hellendil to pursue a career as a curse breaker and come work with him.

His youngest sister is three years older and also possessed magical talent. She is the shortest sibling at around 5'7". She has black hair and likes to wear it in cute styles. She attended Hogwarts as well and was sorted into Hufflepuff. She is fun and vibrant, and a hopeless romantic, frequently reading romance novels (and passing them down to her little brother). She is currently working with her mother at the jewelry shop since she is undecided as to what she truly wants to do with her life.

11. What are your MC’s fears?

Ever since the confrontation with Rookwood, Hellendil's greatest fear is the darkness he is capable of when he becomes infuriated. So much anger and hate fueled powerful magic that helped him easily overpower his enemies, but once it was over he was a wreck over what he had done. Yes, he'd avenged Anne and Sebastian and numerous others that Rookwood had cursed or killed, but at what cost? The memory haunts him, especially at times when he's alone and unoccupied.

He also certainly fears loss, especially of those he cares about. He's seen so much loss during fifth year, it's one of those things that will show up in nightmares, and jostle him awake. It keeps him up at night, worrying.

Hello! I created an academy lot for Sims to learn martial arts or the Sim Fu in their homeworld without the need to travel to Shang Simla. I kept it to a lot size of 30x20 and instead of a usual dojo, I chose instead a refurbished building to make it a modern dojo or academy for the community that will hopefully fit in any world.

This lot will only require the World Adventures expansion pack for the lot assignment to show up and work in your game. I have included only 5 Sheng Hai Training Dummy and Board Breaker each so that it does not get crowded. I also decided not to include gym equipment to keep this lot exclusive for martial arts.

I tried to place Shang Simla books in the Posture-Perfect Bookshelf but the game removed the recipe and fishing skill books once I turned it back to a community lot so I decided to just scrap it and keep it a normal bookshelf instead. This lot has been play-tested and let me know if you experience any problems on your end.

📣 For those who prefer downloading through MTS rather than using Sim File Share, I will be uploading all my recent content to the MTS site but it will still have to go through their moderation process and may take time. I will update the links once it gets approved.

The Red Book 📕: A collection of some more explicitly saucy supernatural works. I tend to kind of tiptoe around any direct sexual/erotic aspects in things I write, so this would be more like a writing exercise than anything else, just to see how I can rework (disdainful literati voice) ~smut~ into something meatier ha ha than just a one-and-done indulgence shot. I don't see this one being put together anytime soon, as, again, I'm still prone to side-stepping outright raunchiness versus innuendo. But we'll see what happens.

Unknown and Terrible 🌑⚰️: Short version? Jonathan Harker winds up as the new Dracula following a very bloody climax in Transylvania. He uses Scholomance magic to pull Francis' reincarnation bullshit out through his nose, brings Mina back as a new soul, and tries to get her back. It is very much about me being a petty prick and proving Jonathan and Mina = The Better Romance and the Better Tragic Vampire Lovers. Choke on it, Francis.

Long Night Drive 🚙: This one fittingly only seems to haunt me when I'm driving after dark on empty roads. The premise being a sort of liminal What If? What if someone started a long drive at night and neither the road or the night ever ended? What if the last wrong turn turned them off of Earth's road map and onto Someplace Else's? Ideally this would only hit the driver on a night of Importance. One of those 'things are crossing over' nights--and they crossed over in the wrong direction. Uh oh.

The Harker Records 🖤 🖋️: Oh, but this one gives me brain itches. It's hazy at the edges, but it'd be a sort of fusion between anthology and purposeful/linked Big Narrative. Basically, the Harkers and their friends start becoming unofficial monster hunters/recorders/aides. I always love when paranormal stories have it work out so that if you're stamped once by the uncanny, the uncanny continues to gravitate toward you. I'd like to see them interact with myriad eerie happenings across public domain horrors together. Peak couple's activity <3

Death's Dogs 🐕☠️: An examination of how Death has an abundance of dogs with various tasks bred into them. And how Dracula maybe crossed the paths of more than one spectral hound during his English holiday.

The M.A.D Gods 😤: Augh, it's gathered so much dust, BUT I STILL LOVE IT AND MY WEIRD NUCLEAR NEON YELLOW PANTHEON SO MUCH. The gist is that 1) The Universe was made by one entity basically ejecting the bulk of Its body mass away so Matter could happen and flourish 2) That shit's tiring 3) The Atomic God (named because It is responsible for every atom in the universe) closes Earth around it like shell/blanket for an eons-long nap 4) It creates two guard-gods, Maker and Breaker, to keep any cosmic horror jerks out of the neighborhood--It ditched them to make the known universe so It could have some peace, finally. 5) Hijinks ensue as Maker and Breaker dutifully chokeslam any Lovecraftian interlopers out of the galaxy and spend their free time watching humanity fuck shit up

Bloody Anniversary 💒: An unexpected meetup of various couples in various states of actually being in love, each celebrating their anniversary. One of these couples is older than they seem. And maybe not celebrating the anniversary anyone would expect.

Lady Luna Blue 🔵: Started out as alternative what-if for who the Pretty Girl in Piccadilly might be. She could still go that route, but I think my imagination has long since run off with her into more original territory. Lady Luna Blue is her professional name; at least as Victorian era mediums and mystics go. In-between card readings and seances, she catches the attention of something with much more supernatural weight than she's prepared for. And it happily takes advantage when she invites any 'wandering spirits' in.

just some bits and pieces that we picked up from the recent vlog shared by xz and his team. honestly, their work just keeps getting better and better. no one does it like them. some people may hate on him for the ‘vlogs’ but at this point, the production quality is on par with something you can show on tv or a streaming app. xz’s travel show when….

Let’s start with the date of posting which 3/29, out of all the days he could have shared this, why now? They usually go for Thursdays but not this one. We think it’s a late 3/28 gift, that day is Wuji recording and also when WYB came home from his Rome trip. What a nice coincidence, cause the vlog posted had Rome in it too. These two are really so particular with dates! I can’t. 🥹🥹🥹🥹

1. One thing that stood out to me was when he was looking at a design book. He was talking about designing typeface and letter, and how there are different formations in writing or presenting them. I don’t think that it was ever CPN that he likes to play with letters/ characters to give a different meaning. or to hide something. think : yibo’s motorcyle suit. this just confirms that.

You forget there’s an entire other side tucked behind its back that observers only manage to glimpse if they’re lucky and are briefly offered just an auspicious quiver.

You think there’s so much moon in him.

Ancient history in the rise and fall of his topography: the delicate shifts of his skin and bones; the hot red blood that ran and how much of it erupted during the epochs of his life. How it must have flowed like seawater as he shivered alone in a silent, frozen landscape.

His many faces: his alert, cunning eyes, steely and knife-sharp; his cheeks, rounded and high with color, when he laughs and it surprises everyone. When humor catches him off-guard and there’s a quick bark of joy slipping out before the back of his hand hides it again.

What wondering minds conceive when they make stories of him: a wild animal, a traveler in the shade of a tree, a disgraced exile, a divinity.

He carries it all with supernatural grace. The weight of his entire being locked into a sequence he never signed up for. Only existing as a casualty of collision, a long line of coincidences that travelled and travelled until they made impact, that shattered and burst and finally returned to life metallic.

And yet, so bright.

It’s approaching dawn now and he’s a splinter of a thing in your bed.

Curled up into the sheets, hair a wild mane of auburn where early sunlight favors it. His side profile pressed into your pillow, rolled carelessly over until he was pushing you toward the border.

You couldn’t see him then but heard him murmuring and felt him shaking as he chased blindly. Just the faintest whimpers for attention as his fingers reached out, his powerful body folded as if in utero.

And it was a silly thing that broke your heart, despite how full your heart is these days with love for him.

He’s still tangled up in a dream, movement beneath his eyelids giving him away. His fingers twitching, one leg slotted beneath your own beginning to flex and bend.

You snuggle closer to him, turn until you can clutch him to your chest, rubbing his silver shoulder—up and down the red star that seems to constantly burn him alive.

His brow furrows, tormented with agony. His hand clenches into a boulder behind your back. His speech is slurred and Russian, rattling numbers and compliance and you’ve learned enough to dissect the vocabulary, can parse out his desperate pleas of sir-ready-missioncomplete-missionreport-itdoesnothurt-Iwillobey-Iamnothing-Iamaweapon-Iamyourdog—

He makes a curtailed noise. A quick, high whine like a pained animal, so you let him seek out your body heat, let him burrow into your neck and cling to your waist as his teeth chatter.

And there’s not much more can do when he falls apart like that. Nothing you can say or assure or shout out as much as you want to in order to wake him. He won’t—he never wakes. He only continues to cross the memory, dragged routinely across the deep sky until morning. Sometimes it goes on for hours. Sometimes it goes on all night.

But now the sun is ascending, chasing away the dark, tucking his fears back into the other side of the world and Bucky calms with it, crying tamped down to only a few sniffles.

You brush away the wet hair that has stuck to his cheeks and forehead, wipe his brow and press your lips to him, tasting tears and sweat.

You do it again, another kiss to his forehead, and again, leaving your own mark, impacts of softness, and love, and everything he needed and couldn’t receive for so long.

“Sorry,” he stirs, “woke you up—” but you shush him with a kiss to his nose, then one to his chin.

“Sweetheart,” he murmurs, shy and embarrassed, but you’ll have none of it, especially when he doesn’t pull away, only leans in to receive more because he wants it as much as he’s needed it and you’ll give him everything, every night.

Your exiled divinity. Your bright, bright boy. Your moon and his many faces.

You kiss all of them again—and again, and again, and again.

Three-Dimensional Thinking

War engulfs the subsurface realm. Cities starve, children perish, temples are reduced to rubble. Twice-vassal Siktun City is no different, and large portions of its populace revolt against Chivik rule. Remote Siktun is resentful over a lack of imperial protection, and hard to pacify for much the same reason that made it hard to defend, and so the revolutionaries are powerful there.

But a lopsided war may still be long and bloody. And so Siktun is engulfed in war all the same as the other underground realms, and its people watch their city slowly ground to rubble, and despair. Many agonizing voices all speak the same prayer, whispered in ruins and shouted in echoing caverns.

"Circadian! Day and night that are changing! Sky-gleaned-from-tales! Instigator, wheel-turner, transformer! If we must fight and starve and kill one another, if there must be upheaval and bloodshed, then show us a sign of your support for our struggle! Reveal those cosmic truths that we echo with our deeds, oh great revealer!"

And for many years, the prayer went unanswered, even as it was taken up by ever-more voices. Until at last, a reply came; not from high above, nor from far below, but from within the city itself, a rumbling through the large cavern in which it was constructed.

"THE SKY SHALL NOT FULFILL YOUR WISH." the voice proclaimed. "IT IS ITS NATURE TO HONOR BOUNDARY, TO ENFORCE SEPARATION, TO PRESERVE SURFACES SACROSANCT. IT CREATES REFLECTIONS AND IMPRISONS THEM IN MIRRORS. IT SPINS GREAT ZODIACAL WHEELS OF SYMBOLS, WHERE EACH MARK CHASES AFTER ALL OTHERS, BUT NEVER COMES CLOSER TO REACHING THEM. IT WILL NEVER UNDO THE BARRIER THAT VEXES YOU."

Then one Tiktik, who refused to accept this answer, yelled out: "Then, whoever you are, act on our behalf! Show us what we fight and die for, if this lies within your power! Tear away all that which separates us from the divine!"

And Haebarik, maker of paths, horizon walker, star-bridger, breaker of traditions, castaway god, one-armed realm-forger, responded:

"WELL, IF YOU INSIST."

And there was a great earthquake, and through the cavern-ceiling then descended the great black whale Maretik, maw opened wide as it feasted on the stone. Round above the city it circled, eating away at the rock, until at last it disappeared once more, having devoured the barrier between realms above and below.

And through the hole in the roof of their world, the Tiktik beheld the moon, shining brightly, its bloody lake like a great lidless eye. And the defenders took the bloodstained sky as a sign of divine favor, and all their foes were converted or banished or slain. And so remote Siktun became the first city to claim true independence from Chivik; and though its people are loyal to Corobel first and foremost, a number of them worships the Carver of Paths as a lesser deity.

From the surface, the passage to Siktun appears like a great circular pit, its sides gently sloping in, with a hole at the bottom through which one might look upon Siktun and its subsurface lake. Paths have been dug through the soil and stone, culminating in great elevators that ferry travelers up and down to the city.

Though brighter than most of the underworld, the sun does not directly shine down into the city, though the summer noons get bright enough for the Tiktik to briefly stay within their dwellings. Despite their lack of adaptation to sunlight, the Tiktik have responded to their surface access with great enthusiasm, and eagerly harvest the nearby natural resources, foremost among them wood.

The reactions of nearby realms differ. Besieged Wera, though closest of all human cities, must remain dedicated to its own defense, and interacts little with Siktun. Its hinterlands, long since abandoned by their ruler-in-name, are quick to strengthen ties with this new regional power, and many come to call Siktun's rulers lord in time.

Unimaa, whose access to subsurface goods was largely controlled by the Hewn, eagerly cuts out the middle-man and sends emissaries to trade with Siktun directly. And to the southwest, locked in a decade-long stalemate, the malevolent Kalkayer reigns over artificial deltas and mud-choked farms. It hears whisperings of a new city, and so sends scouts upriver; eager to find out whether Tiktik shells, too, can host its algae...

3) How do they laugh?

Imani's laugh is loud and contagious. Once she starts laughing it's hard to not laugh with. Maybe it's the fact that she has a Primarina as her partner , but her laugh is pretty melodic!

Flynn's laugh is more quiet than Imani's. Her giggles are soft and sweet. Whenever she laughs really hard, she tries to cover her mouth,so they can come out muffled.

Arrow's laugh is rare. Not because they're grumpy or anything, they just don't laugh as much. But when they do laugh, the best way to describe it is husky,a little awkward since they don't laugh as much as they did when they were younger.

4)What are their comfort foods?

Imani likes warm things- they help her relax- so a warm plate of curry is always good! I think of all the things she can cook, curry is the one that she does the best. As in it's edible. If not curry, cookies and muffins are always a go to!

Flynn really likes sour jaw breakers. Not sure if that counts as a comfort food, but they got her through studying sessions so I guess that's something, right?

Arrow loves soup with bread on the side. Their mom used to make it for them when they were little. It's a happy memory of the past.

12) Where would they travel if they didn't have to worry about planning/price.

Imani and Flynn have already traveled a fair share, so they're okay with anywhere that's safe and comforting. Though, Arrow might want to visit Sheridan Village after spending time with Imani and Aelita.

Flynn- oh Flynn. The most she has ever traveled to was East Gearen City, Route 9 and the rest of GDC. So it's safe to say she wants to see everything. Reading can only show you so much.

14) How sappy are they?

Imani's a big ole sap XD. She loves her friends dearly and will express so in the cheesiest way possible.

Flynn is usually the victim of sappiness and it never fails to get her flustered. Growing up in a....not so loving environment, being treated as a money maker rather than a daughter, any sort of affection is new to her. So she tries to be able to convey her gratitude, even if it comes with lots of stutters.

Arrow is a quiet sap lol. Mostly through actions. I mean, what else would you expect from someone who practically adopted Imani and Flynn as their little sisters? That often say the most sappiest shit in the most monotone voice, which makes it even more effective, surprisingly.

16) What's their favorite weather?

Imani loves clear skies with the sun out! Gives her a burst of energy!!!

Flynn loves the chilly weather that's within Route 9. While GDC has its manual weather and such, route 9 feels more real, more special. Whenever she has the time to, she goes there with a book to relax.

DESERT. That's Arrow's favorite weather. But for real, they literally lived under the desert sun almost their entire life. They are probably the few people that enjoy it despite being in GDC and other places for a while.

Fortunately doctor-patient confidentiality was well enforced in him and takes privacity and his work pretty seriously but random people feel like trust and infodump in him and you better do not do it without appointment he will be bothered). Artilleryman/Sniper Sisu (CT-4649): With a resting big face, he's the oldest of the team, always worried amd pessimistic, dad friend energy, a worrywhat, he's the little things that make the squad a fam. Also knows to cook and Maker you better tidy your part of the barracks!

Communications/Electronics Whist (CT-4869): the younger in spirit, have a double life in the holonet. Silver tongued (and the piercing Is a pun), playful, nosy, inventive, breaker ruler, do not let be feed with ideas by Kyem (terror brothers)

It is one of the most contentious subjects in the US. It becomes a political hot potato when assessing an incumbent President’s performance. It can be deal breaker or deal maker when it comes to family travel plans, and it can influence the type of vehicle we purchase for our daily driver.

Of course, I am talking about the price of gas. And if there’s one thing certain, from the depths of COVID to the present, we have just about seen it all in only four years. The worst was in the summer of 2022, when the average national price was $5.12 a gallon.

The latest data shows that the US average is $3.46 a gallon, down from $3.59 this time last year. Gas prices have thus far peaked at $3.68 in April this year.

Naturally, there is great variability in prices across the nation, depending on state taxes, proximity to refineries, and the nuances of market demand. It explains why I was paying $3.59 in Orlando last month, but only paid $2.67 in Canyon earlier this week. And on my trip west to Arizona, I noted $3.15 to $3.35 in Albuquerque, followed by $3.35 in eastern Arizona, and $3.55 to $3.75 in Flagstaff. Just for sticker shock value alone, I saw $5.49 outside Grand Canyon National Park.But since this is not my first rodeo, I knew to fill up in Winslow for $3.35, and still have plenty to get back there today.

I find it interesting just how important gas prices are for Americans. In many regards, we really do see cheap gas as an entitlement. We bought into car culture after WWII. We moved to the suburbs farther away from our places of employment. We had love affairs with our cars, and enjoyed driving them up and down city streets as if on parade, then went to the drive-in to hang out with our pals. Cars are a big part of our lives, and unless you’re driving an EV, you will be pumping gas regularly.

And then there’s the Great American Road Trip, another artifact of the mid-century that became part of the zeitgeist. It’s what families did for summer vacations, driving to amusement parks, national parks, and distant relatives. We haven’t let go of that.

Further complicating matters, and perhaps influencing our adamance for cheap gas, is the fact that the US is so spread out. This affects individuals and commerce equally, because people and products often have to travel long distances just because. While our older large cities have long-established mass transit systems in place, newer cities have very little, like Dallas and Houston. There is also some resistance to mass transit or even carpooling, because we have come to think of our cars as one of the few places we can have quiet, or at least control the sound system.

Thus, we find ourselves very gasoline-dependent. We blame the President when prices rise, as if he can control them. Aside from reducing the federal gas tax, or releasing millions of barrels of petroleum from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, there’s nothing he can do to affect the day to day prices we face. Foreign policy and conservation initiatives can have long-run impacts, but what you pay today is just good old supply and demand.

In the short run when there are price hikes, about the only thing we can do is simply to try to drive less. But that is not always possible, given our commutes. Thus, we may nix long road trip plans, or combine errand trips so that we’re not running out for just one thing. The long-run, though, gives us the necessary time to replace gas guzzlers with fuel-efficient models, even EVs. It also allows us time to find housing closer to our jobs. It is also possible that we will have opened ourselves to lifestyle changes, which could include ditching our vehicles whenever possible to take the bus or train to work.

Still, we need to look at this problem at the margin. Let’s suppose that gas goes up $1 a gallon. Is that enough alone to warrant scuttling a vacation? My road trip to Arizona is 1500 miles total, and at 25mpg, I will have consumed 60 gallons. At the margin, a $1 increase translates to $60 added expense for the trip. But when compared to the totality of expenses, meaning food, lodging, and souvenirs, it is paltry. As it stands, I got the current round trip for $200 or thereabouts.

The story isn’t all that different if you stay at home. If I drove 1500 miles a month going to work and running errands, I would be paying $160 using the price in Canyon as a gauge. A $1 increase would turn that into $220, but even that is only $15 a week added expense, or two craft beers or Starbucks drinks.

As much as we like to complain, I think we have it pretty good over here. Compared to the $8-10 common in Europe, or even the $5 I saw in Costa Rica last summer, we are driving a bargain in the US. This explains why my European friends love coming here on holiday, because they see the price of fuel as inconsequential. There’s a reason why everyone rides bikes in Amsterdam, and it has nothing to do with health and fitness.

I say all this just to give you food for thought as you and your families ponder your own vacation plans. Cheap gas may not be a birthright, but for the vast majority of the time, we have had it all along. Maybe we just like to have something to argue about.
