ABBA - Waterloo 1974

"Waterloo" is a song by Swedish pop group ABBA, with music composed by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus and lyrics written by Stikkan Anderson. It is first single of the group's second studio album of the same name, and their first under the Atlantic label in the US. This was also the first single to be credited to the group performing under the name ABBA. The title and lyrics reference the 1815 Battle of Waterloo, and use it as a metaphor for a romantic relationship.

In 1974, "Waterloo" represented Sweden in the 19th edition of the Eurovision Song Contest held in Brighton, winning the contest and beginning ABBA's path to worldwide fame. The song differed from the standard "dramatic ballad" tradition at the contest by its flavour and rhythm, as well as by its performance. ABBA gave the audience something that had rarely been seen before in Eurovision: flashy costumes (including silver platform boots), a catchy uptempo song and simple choreography. It was the first winning entry in a language other than that of their home country; prior to 1973, all Eurovision singers had been required to sing in their country's native tongue, a restriction that was lifted briefly for the contests between 1973 and 1976 (thus allowing "Waterloo" to be sung in English), then reinstated before ultimately being removed again in 1999. Sveriges Radio released a promo video for "Waterloo" that was directed by film director Lasse Hallström, whose first notable English-language film success was What's Eating Gilbert Grape in 1993. ABBA recorded the German and French versions of "Waterloo" in March and April 1974; the French version was adapted by Alain Boublil, who would later go on to co-write the 1980 musical Les Misérables.

The song shot to number 1 in the UK and stayed there for two weeks, becoming the first of the band's nine UK number 1's, and the 16th biggest selling single of the year in the UK. It also topped the charts in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, West Germany, Ireland, Norway, and Switzerland, while reaching the Top 3 in Austria, France, the Netherlands, Spain, and Sweden. Unlike other Eurovision-winning tunes, the song's appeal transcended Europe: "Waterloo" also topped the charts in South Africa, and reached the Top 10 in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Rhodesia, and the US (peaking at number 6, their third-highest-charting US hit after number 1 "Dancing Queen" and number 3 "Take a Chance on Me"). In 2005, at Eurovision fiftieth anniversary competition Congratulations: 50 Years of the Eurovision Song Contest, "Waterloo" was chosen as the best song in the contest's history.

"Waterloo" is featured in the encore of the musical Mamma Mia!. The song does not have a context or a meaning. It is just performed as a musical number in which members of the audience are encouraged to get up off their seats and sing, dance and clap along. The song is performed by the cast over the closing credits of the film Mamma Mia!, but is not featured on the official soundtrack. It is also performed as part of the story in the sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, by Hugh Skinner and Lily James.

The Australian film Muriel's Wedding (1994), features "Waterloo" in a pivotal scene in which lead Toni Collette bonds with the character played by Rachel Griffiths. The film's soundtrack, featuring five ABBA tracks, is widely regarded as having helped to fuel the revival of popular interest in ABBA's music in the mid-1990s. "Waterloo" features prominently in the 2015 science-fiction film The Martian. The song plays as the film's lead, played by Matt Damon, works to ready his launch vehicle for a last-chance escape from Mars. In "Mother Simpson", the eighth episode of the seventh season of The Simpsons, Mr. Burns plays "Ride of the Valkyries" from a tank about to storm the Simpson home, but the song is cut-off and "Waterloo" is played, to which Smithers apologizes, advising he "must have accidentally taped over that".

Bryaxis Hartwell DiFransisco — currently twenty four, the eldest. Tactical genius, marksman, scientist. He married our cousin Lorelei Hartwell and became Lord Hartwell through her. He’s the smart one and the special one. He can be gentle, but he has mood swings.

Aria Olympia Mary DiFransisco — my twin sister. She died before our sixteenth birthday. She’s the damsel in distress. She was born blind, and because of how life was at La Chiesa Nera, she only ever learned braille and that was it. Her role was the tragic beauty, and she looked the most like our mother — blond hair, green eyes. We shared a room her entire life and a lot of people just knew us as the DiFransisco Twins, because we were always together

Me(Iyla Catalina DiFransisco Romanoff-Danvers) — I’m sixteen, my role was the heir to the DiFransisco title and estate and the protector. I’ve been trained as a knight since I was six and served under HYDRA in a specific set of situations, overarchingly executions or entertainment. My father didn’t let me go in the field, so I lack a lot of experience. I look like my father; I have his dark hair and hazel eyes. That’s part of why I’m the one who is the heir — I look like him and I think like him when he needed me to. He made me the Dark Knightess. I escaped a bit over a month ago and am living with my Mumma(@nevaeh-daughterofvalcarol) and Amma(@azalea-romanoff), hence the Romanoff-Danvers addition

Cecily Marian DiFransico — she’s the youngest child, age seven. Sweet, kind, carefree, never seen death. She was four when Mamma left and has spent most of her life on my hip, my back, or clinging to my skirts. She’s a sweetheart; blond hair, hazel eyes, her role is the golden child(slightly different than Aria’s role)

Mio Padre; Count Leonardo Angelo DiFransisco — he’s the patriarch. He’s a genius, albeit eccentric. He created La Chiesa Nera as a fantasy world in the Italian mountains and is a major HYDRA lord. I left, but he never hurt us physically.

Mamma, Elizabette DiFransisco — we don’t know much about her, she didn’t know herself to tell us. She was a Black Widow until mio padre fell in love with her and bargained for her freedom. She had a lot of problems but she taught us to be resilient and hold up under anything. She left six years ago after her lover was killed but I have a pretty good case that my father killed her.

Mamma Gabi(Lady Gabrielle) — my Mamma’s lover, who was a sweet woman who loved sweets and painting and taught me embroidery. She was killed after Papá found out about he and Mamma’s relationship by firing squad. I was a part of said firing squad.

Amma; Azalea Romanoff — daughter of Natasha Romanoff and Wanda Maximoff, you probably know her. She’s sweet and badass and is teaching me to fight with daggers

Mumma; Nevaeh Danvers-Valkyriedottir?maybe? I don’t think she ever told me what combination of last names she’s using — anyways: daughter of King Valkyrie and Carol Danvers, general, love her. She’s teaching me to fight in a combat situation

This is going to take me a while.

My first impression of Frieda were questions: "What kind of a person could have raise up Manfred von Karma for him to turn out the way he did? What was her fundamental flaw that they ingrained a trauma of perfectionism into two generations?" (arguably you could cay three generations; Manfred fathered Franziska fairly late) I knew what she needed to be for the story/family tree to make sense, but I also had to figure out how to make it make sense as a self-contained person.

I think that I first began really hating her when I got the idea that she corrected her children's (and their progeny's) grip on writing utensils and cutlery. (As a kid I had always loathed that and it more cemented in me to hold the pens and pencils wrong.) It was fairly late at night and some alcohol might have been involved, so the idea of that crossbred with the idea of "slapping ruler/twig over fingers as corporeal punishment" and it came out as breaking fingers, mostly on accident. Damage to fingers had always creeped the fuck out of me. So... since then I really do not like Frieda. At all. No going back.

Sorry, besides the Ride of the Valkyries I really haven't got anything right now. I'll get to this question at a later date.

Hats. Specifically fascinaters. Second is the "First Republic era" (1918-1938) of Czechoslovakia. She is a girl of that era.

Did a lot of those child drawings. Her father never put a single one on display. So she was dedicated to "get better" until her drawings would be "good enough" to make it on the fridge or something the like. That was probably when all the shit began spiraling down...

As a kid she was doing her best to get her father's attention. However, papa was always very busy and didn't have much time for her. She had all the toys she wanted, was free to pursue any education in any field she wished... but papa didn't have time for her and mamma left when she was young. Baby Frieda just wanted someone who cared.

Living with Bernard had consequences and those consequences were Frieda's strange understanding of electronic and electricity. She owned a literal lightning in a bottle, until one day the fuse-box blew out, at which point 70-something old Frieda von Karma put on rubber gloves (for insulation), grabbed the lightning from the bottle, taped it into said fuse box and ever since then the electricity in the house behaves perfectly. Somehow.

She did actually eventually come to love Bernard. She found out a tad too late, though.

Probably fussed over her appearance too much. She had to look "perfect". I suppose a lot of anti-aging cream was involved in her routine.

I... I don't think I have to answer that one, do I? I mean... Take Manfred von Karma's parenting, take away all the honey (and pancakes) from it, then crank it up to eleven.

Seriously, Frieda's fascinaters are an important part of her characteristics for me, because it was the only thing of her she allowed to be expressive. Her demeanor was always poker-face stoic, her paintings were strictly realistic (unless she decided to do a different style, and even so it was a very realistic take). So her fascinaters were a way of communicating to her surroundings how she felt and what was she going through. She would swap them through the day if her mood changed.

Rating RWBY Parents

I rated all of the RWBY parents I could think of when I should have been sleeping! Enjoy!

Li Ren: Wise and selfless. Gives great advice. Sacrificed himself to save his son. Responsible for Ren’s luscious black hair. Great dad, 100/10. Rip.

An Ren: What a sweetheart. So pretty. Such a good mom. Keeps a level head during a Grimm attack for her kid (take notes Mamma Valkyrie). Responsible for Ren’s beautiful pink eyes. 100/10, Ren has the best parents in the show.

Summer Rose: Baker of cookies and slayer of giant monsters. She seems awesome, hopefully she’s not a hound or secretly evil (actually that’s exactly what I want but that would lower her score), 10/10.

Pietro Polendina: Sacrificed part of his soul twice so that Penny could exist. Kind, good natured, clearly loves his daughter very much, all around pretty awesome. Loses a point due to his overprotectiveness impeding Penny’s ability to live her life, but overall a pretty solid dad, 9/10.

Terra Cotta-Arc: Not much screentime but she’s a pretty good mom. She does lose a point because she let her kid get tangled up in stealing an Atlas airship. 9/10.

Saphron Cotta-Arc: Again, not much screentime. Pretty good from what we saw of her. Loses two points for being the one physically present while her kid contributed to stealing an Atlas airship. 8/10.

Jaune’s Mom: If I’m remembering the tiny snippets of dialogue about her correctly, a good mom who loves Jaune very much but didn’t believe in his ability to succeed as a huntsman (with good reason). 8/10, wish we knew more about her.

Pyrrha’s Mom (?): Kind of hard to judge, but she seemed like a nice lady. Is she even Pyrrha’s mom? Idk, a bit confusing, but anyone who raised a kid like Pyrrha can’t be half bad, 6/10.

Ozma (2.0): Not necessarily a bad dad, but partially responsible for his kids’ deaths. Oops. 5/10, it’s okay buddy you’ll get many, many more shots.

Ghira Belladonna: Protective, a little awkward, but cares about Blake a lot. Not enough to stop his daughter from joining Adam’s branch of the White Fang or to keep her away from the aforementioned piece of literal garbage though? Really? Come on Ghira, you can be better. 5/10.

Kali Belladonna: Very cute and sweet, but same issues as Ghira. Also, she liked Sun way too much considering what a bad first impression he made and the fact that Blake had just gotten out of an abusive relationship. I know he’s cute Kali but 4/10.

Jaune’s Dad: I think we know even less about him than about Jaune’s mom, but he also didn’t believe Jaune could be a huntsman. Plus, he seems to have given Jaune some issues with toxic masculinity that were never fully addressed? Fortunately Jaune grew past those, but eh. 4/10.

Taiyang Xiao Long: Look, I get it man, depression sucks. Having your second wife die on you sucks. Having to raise yourself and your little sister on top of dealing with your second mom’s death and the sudden loss of your father as well sucks too, and it was undeniably Not Cool of Tai to put Yang in that situation. He had some good dad moments later on, but I really can’t give him any higher than a 3/10. Sorry Tai.

Willow Schnee: The show is trying really hard to make her sympathetic right now, and it’s kind of working, but she abandoned her kids to fend for themselves against their abusive father and became an alcoholic. She’s doing better, but an in universe day of helping isn’t quite enough, especially considering that she only started doing so when Weiss did the work of actually arresting and removing Jaques. 1/10, but I’m hopeful that she can improve her score.

Mamma Valkyrie: Pretty bad. From what we know of her, she ended up losing Nora during a Grimm attack. Best-case scenario, she was intentionally trying to lead them away and just couldn’t find Nora again (girl HOW), which is still not great because precious baby Nora ended up homeless and starving. Worst-case scenario, she intentionally left her behind to die. Neither option or anything in between is good. Whatever happened, it messed Nora’s self-worth up pretty bad. -10/10, sorry.

Jaques Schnee: Ugh. A snake with a mustache is a good way to describe him, thanks Robyn. Bad person, bad husband, bad dad, bad villain...can he do anything right? I’m glad he’s in jail where he belongs. Weiss why you gotta be so good and insist on moving him before Atlas falls. -10/10.

Raven Branwen: Raven sucks. At least with Nora’s mom, we can make the excuse that she lost her. Raven has the ability to create a portal to her daughter and simply choses to pretend Yang doesn’t exist. Yeah, she originally left her with not-as-depressed Tai, Summer, and probably pre-alcohol Qrow, but she never stepped in when Summer died and Tai became neglectful, so clearly she didn’t do it because she cared. Never showed up, no matter how hard Yang’s life was, not even when she lost her arm. She saved Yang once? Why couldn’t she do it more than once? Why did she stay away? Why is she the worst? -15/10, she should be ashamed of herself.

James Ironwood: Honorable mention. He’s not really Penny’s dad, but he could have been if he wasn’t a bad one. -100/10. Don’t think I need to explain why.

Marcus Black: Oh my lord. Bad dad. Bad. Dad. Took Mercury’s semblance and legs, physically and mentally tortured him for years. What an awful guy. Good on you, Mercury, for giving him what he deserves. -1000/10, holy heck.

Salem: Killed her kids. -yikes/10.

Ooo, the next ACOTAR gen (except Gwynriel kids because I already wrote about them here):

Feysand: I see them having another child, a girl (and name her after Rhys’s sister🥺). Everyone’s first thought when they see her next to Nyx is that they’re twins. That���s how similar they are. I see her as inheriting most of Rhys’s powers, and her being more powerful than Nyx. Loves painting and flying with her family. Mischievous, but nobody can stay mad at her because of how cute she is. Oh and 🗣daddy’s princess🗣. Seriously, Rhysand loves her so much, and he'd would bring the moon over for her if she ever asked.

Nessian: daughters. When I think about Nessian's children, I can only envision them having daughters, perhaps three or four. They’re as sassy as their mother. Strong, independent, love reading and training with their parents (secretly enjoy sparing with Cassian more thought because they’re all 🗣daddy’s princesses🗣); once they grow up, they join the Valkyrie’s union, led by their mother. Also, prank Cassian a lot, but he can never get mad at them (you already know why). Nyx sometimes takes part in pranking uncle Cass.

Elucien: I imagine them having a son. A soft spoken, sweet boy with light brown eyes and beautiful red hair. A bit shy. Has a way with his words. That doesn’t mean he’s not sassy; how can he not, when his parents are Lucien and Elain? But nonetheless a cutie pie. Has a soft spot for gardening with Elain; grows out flowers that remind him of her. A huge mamma boy! Reads a lot with Lucien, and is interested in everything human related.

As for relationships, I see one of the twins ending up with one of Nessian’s daughters (just imagine Cass and how he’d act 🤣). And for the other twin, only if Gwyn is NOT related to the Vanserras in any way!!!! : I’d love seeing him and Elucien’s son together; I think it’d be a soft love story I’d live for (again, only if Gwyn has no blood ties to any of the Vanserras).

What are the Valkyrie sisters like?

How long is a piece of string?

They're all very different in that they are all seperate individuals with different likes, loves, dislikes, hates... etc. But they are all close-knit, a sister-hood (if you will), bonded by the fact that they were born of their own death. None of them know what their life was before.

They are fiercely loyal to each other. Protective too; a Valkyrie will protect another Valkyrie before defending anyone else.

They are not 'good' either. They operate in a grey moral area that is neither good nor bad. The end result for them is always the same - death, Ragnarok, and rebirth.

In summary; they are fierce, fury personified, distinctly female, highly trained, very adventurous, and very deeply connected.

... and you better believe that they have choreographed dances for when they're drunk. Not in a cool way, either. In the way girls choreograph dances at a sleepover. See: Dancing Queen (the Mamma Mia! movie version) and/or Brr its Cold in Here (Bring it On, 2000).

They will kill you. They can deny you a good death. They are beautiful and powerful. But they are also women who love each other dearly and eternally.
