Happy Saturday Lovely Fandom. We've reached the second to last ep of this series rewatch. Unreal. God I LOVE this ep. So so good. Tim being her handler. Reminds me of Alias. Which was my first love for tv show/ship. If you ever watched Alias you’d know why I love this asset and handler situation so much. Let us start.

5x21 Going Under

Start out strong Lucy is going UC. Has to do with the last episode. Frank Teska has been released from prison. He killed his brother for the attack on his daughter Dara. He is back in business. Looking to get into the Ghost Gun trade. You need specific polymer to make them. Metro raided and took his supplier out. Which is where Lucy comes in. She will pose as someone at Southland Chemicals. Be his new supplier.

We join our ship talking about the OP. Tim mentioning he’s using Hard Luck as his CI. Lucy not trusting this guy as far as she can throw him. Tim’s reply is the best. The fact that his CI knows how important Lucy is to him *squee* Then telling her as such. That this guy knows Lucy is special to him That if he messes up Tim will hunt him down. Gah I love this. Calling in favors for his girl. Work version of romantic ha

Lucy’s sweet expression when he tells her this. Basically saying he loves her in not so many words. Lucy being Lucy calling it 'Undercover love.' hehe Tim isn't even fighting it anymore. Just smiles shakes his head and rolls with her antics. We all know he loves her for it. Damn they cute. Actions always speaking louder than words with these two. Lucy couldn’t be cuter as Tim walks away. Her smile saying more than words ever could about how she feels about this man.

Then we get these GLORIOUS phone calls. Like rom-com goodies up in this episode. Love me some protective Tim. Asking her if he needs to talk to her boss? Lucy waves him off. Says she's got it. Tim looking mighty fine Phew lord Scruffy, his sweater and his eyes popping in this lighting. Mmm. Lucy of course checking in on him next. I love this so very much. He won't tell her he's struggling.

So she's going to check on in him since he won't do as such. Tim knowing exactly what she means. Asking if that means he misses her? We all know he does but he deflects in the cutest way. Saying no. His smile when she calls him a jerk. But he's YOUR jerk Lucy haha. He is so damn smitten with her. Loves teasing and messing with her. Just as much as she does for him. One of their love languages shining through in this moment. My damn heart.

She asks if Tim can check in on Tamara? Tim doesn’t hesitate for one second. Of course he’ll check in on their daughter. Doesn’t want her to lose any focus on the job. We then delve into the cute snippet conversations that have my shipper heart fluttering. Lucy telling Tim not to watch 'Top Chef' without her. I love that they have a show they watch together. Makes me giddy. Such a couples thing to have that. Tim giving her crap saying he can’t make any promises.

Lucy asking Tim if he ever wished he had a normal job? Tim says without people shooting at him? Not once. Lucy replying me either. These tidbits are just fantastic. They both love their line of work so much. This whole talking about everything and nothing at all just shows the deep bond they have. Comes from riding together for years 12 hours at a time. Her being UC is isolating but they get to have these moments despite that. Little pockets of joy before this OP heats up.

Tim asking if she’s making any friends? Lucy going on about a lady in her office. It’s so cute I can’t stand it. Talking about his grandkids and such. I love this is so very much. They did a really good job with these shots and the VO's. I saw a lot of people saying felt like rom-com and it really does in the best way. Just being on the phone whole time. Even though they're physically apart they still find a way to connect and be together. It’s so sweet imma get a cavity.

Day 4 rolls around and Tim ask if the monotony is getting to her? Lucy tells him no as long as it’s not for nothing. I mean she had two weeks of it in 3x14. 4 days is nothing but now she has Tim so she's got more to miss this time around. I adore the voice overs in this scene. Tim reassuring her it’s probably cause Frank is double checking her story. I love this shot of Tim in the side mirror. Fierce protector reporting for duty.

Frank has finally surfaced and approached Lucy. Her cover story of being a wanted felon has worked out. Frank thinks she’s an easy target because of it. Lucy playing the fresh start card with him. Not wanting to get into business with him. She does this so well. He tells her not an option. That he needs certain plastics and she needs to not go to jail. Telling her it’s low risk.

Gah I love Tim watching over the situation from across the way. Looking fine af BTW. My god I'll never be over how tall he is and I love it. Tall drink of yum. Look at him in his civvies, the hat, the glasses, the intense way he's watching her. Listening in to their convo. Trying to keep his protectiveness in check. Doing his best not to step in. Especially when Frank threatens her. Which causes Lucy to say yes. Frank says they’ll have dinner tonight then. He’ll come get her from her place. They can hammer out the details of this new partnership.

Lucy meets up with Wesley, Harper, Grey and her man. They’re going over this date for her. Tim looks like he’s going to crawl out of his skin. He hates the idea of this guy possibly thinking it’s a date. He hates this entire conversation really. Keeping his hands in his pockets. Looks at the ground trying to settle his protective nature.

I love Grey checking in with Tim. Minute he hears the word 'romantically and date.' He immediately looks at Tim. Knowing he hates this on so many levels. Tim isn’t being at all discreet with how he feels about this situation. He's basically squirming in front of all of them. Tim continuing to try to put on a brave face. Not well but sure trying. His whole body language screaming his immense discomfort.

Tim is being the least subtle he’s ever been in this moment. Hating the idea she needs a good wire in case he’s handsy. You can see him take a deep breath and clench his jaw at the thought of this. This conversation is killing him softly. Some angsty goodness though. The check in's these two have above getting me in the feels before she sets to leave. That silent communication of their's prominent af. I LOVE him walking Lucy to the door. The intense looks they share on the way.

They both look amazing btw. He keeps constant eye contact with her till he can’t any longer. The intense longing in his stare as he watches her go. *heart clutch* His entire world just walked out the door and it shows. Eric crushing it with the longing look. This is the type of angst I eat up. It’s so so good. Worried Tim is lovely to behold. And that man is insanely worried. He is an open book as she walks away from him. Trying to keep himself from losing his damn mind over this man possibly touching her.

Grey immediately checking in with him. Man wasn't exactly subtle during that whole conversation. Asking Tim if he’s ok? Tim lying saying he’s 5x5. Such a detached military reply. When he is anything but detached in this moment. Wade knowing he’s lying. Their friendship is underrated. Grey saying he has to treat this like any other OP. Any other UC. Sure he'll get right on that. Thanks to Lucy his emotions aren't so easy to turn off anymore. Also not like it’s the love of his life he’s watching over or anything…

Lucy goes to dinner with Frank all wired up. Tim watching intently outside. Fierce protector at the ready. The intense look on his face as he watches over her is doing things to me. *fans self* Like a lion pacing back and forth in it's cage waiting to be let out. Ready to attack at the slightest provocation against her. It's insanely hot tbh. He would gladly throttle this man if given the chance to. All he needs is to be given a reason.

Lucy almost gets Frank to admit to his brothers death when bullets start flying. We watch Tim in an absolute panic call this in. Desperately searching for her in the wreckage from his car. Trying to find her as he rattles off their address. I love her jumping up and looking his way so he knew she was ok. His giant sigh of relief when her head pops up. Feel like we all did that with him. Went from all out panic to instant relief. I said in the hospital scene she is his whole world. That just got shot at and he was paralyzed until she popped up.

He couldn’t breathe until he knew she was alright. His whole body slumping against his seat in relief. Eric crushing it out here with his expressions getting me all emotional. I love how his eyes dart back to her once more before he takes off after the shooters. Double checking she really is there. He couldn’t even be in pursuit of them until he knew she was ok. You can see he wants to stay but can’t. Having an internal battle but knows he has to go after them.

His cop brain in a delay due to this. This delay in reaction definitely affects him in his pursuit of the shooters. Don't think he was fully there mentally. Tim's head was most definitely not in the game when he went after them. Taking us back to 5x01 when Tim told Lucy if her head isn't the game 100 percent it'll get her killed. He is the living embodiment of that line in this moment. This dude almost killed him. Even when the gun is in his face his reaction time is slower.

That is not the Tim Bradford we know and love in the field. He was clouded his emotions running rampant. He had not compartmentalized at all. When Jan shows up it really hits him what almost happened to him. Saying he got lucky it was empty. Otherwise…ugh I don’t even wanna think about it. He’s panting his adrenaline waning and it showing. Looking over where the guy was knowing this could've been far worse. Knowing what it would've done to Lucy.

I love the minute she’s done dealing with Frank Lucy calls Tim. Anxiously awaiting him to answer her call. Both so worried about one another. Gah this episode is fantastic. Never seen Tim this panicky or shaken up. This is a UC OP he’s involved in I can’t imagine how he’d be if he wasn’t.

He just loves her so much. Having a legit meltdown till he knows she’s ok. It’s all over his face as he talks to her on the phone. Eric killing me softly in this one. Lucy isn’t pulling any punches with her worry either. Both making me emotional as hell. Tim replying ‘Yeah I am now.’ *internal screaming* Wasn’t ok till he knew she was.

The love they have for each other is all over this moment. I’m not crying you are…You can see all the tension leave his body when he hears her voice. The neediness in both their voices when he says they should meet up. Gah yes you do. They needed to hear each others voice to calm down after that adrenaline fest.

Then we come to THE laundry scene. One that broke my damn brain. Pretty much broke the entire fandom's brain. I love how she rushes to him and clings on. Wanting zero space between them. Tim leaning into her arms. Rubbing his hand up and down her back. I’m sure both their hearts were racing. They are each other’s safe space and this hug shows that.

So scared and only finding comfort in each others arms. So much emotion surging through them in this hug. I love me a good hug and this one is fantastic one. Trying to ground one another with it. Speaking their concerns about what they just went through. The swaying gets me too. I love everything about this hug.

Lucy basically launches herself at him. He catches her effortlessly and holds her so tightly to him. The remaining tension melting out of of their bodies. Because they were running on adrenaline and anxiety until this hug. Tim holding her so close making sure she’s real. There with him. I’ll never be over this moment and how lovely it is.

This next portion just proves why Lucy is his person. Tim is losing his mind with worry over this guy. Over him trying something. His anxiety coming off him in waves. Lucy wants to soothe him because it's her natural instinct. Tim looks like he wants to cry or punch a wall or both when he ask if he’s tried something? Lucy reassuring him he hasn’t but even if he did she’s got this. The fierce protector coming out strong right now. He can barely contain it. Tim deflecting a little saying ‘I know.’

Lucy knows this man so damn well. Telling him knowing and feeling ok are two different things. She's so right. I love the way she grabs his jacket trying to comfort him. Tim is being so soft and vulnerable in this moment. She wants him to know it’s ok. She’s ok and it’s very ok if he isn’t. Eric killing this episode left and right with his expressions. His heart is hurting it’s all over his face and Lucy is reaching out with a reassuring touch. I love her for validating his feelings. Not judging him for them.

But also knowing he’s being very vulnerable right now and she’s being wonderfully receptive to that. Tim gets a little defensive saying. Not his first time. Lucy is SO good with him. Doesn’t shame him for being bristly about this. Knowing it’s his PTSD in full swing. So soft in her reply and expression. Letting him know probably what’s making this so much worse for him. This is why she’s his person. Never shames him for his feelings only loves him through. Gah they’re making me so emotional. I love this couple so much.

Before Tim gets anymore emotional he tells her he has to go. Now isn’t the time to talk about this. That he knows if she doesn’t feel safe she will bail. If she’s good he’s good. Lucy confirms she’s good. Tim says he has to get back to the station then. Grey is waiting for a status update. Lucy stops him before he can go. Not ready to be apart from him just yet.

Grabbing his arm keeping him from leaving. I love the way she is looking at him landing on his lips. Then she says the 4 words that made us all collectively lose our minds. ‘Lock the door first.’ Is this real life? Did we really get this moment? Adrenaline fueled we made it out alive laundry room sex? Oh my damn lord.

The way he looks at her when she says this. *fans self* Tim is definitely not treating her like any other UC…I remember gasping at her saying this. Needing to be with him in this moment. Tim’s smile realizing what she’s saying. My god. Laundry room sex is now canon for them. We got shower sex last ep and now laundry room post-op sex. My god the writers were good to us. I like being pandered too LOL Also you know there is a damn good chance highly likely really this was unprotected too.

Lucy couldn’t let him walk away yet until she had him. Hot damn. Tim not one to deny her anything is easily roped into her naughty plans. I’m still not over the risks they took to have this heated moment together. They had a frenzied hookup while she was on assignment. I’m dead. They’ve actually killed me in the best way. S5 truly is a fic come to life. I love every minute of it. Clearly missing and craving sexy time with her man. Also probably still hopped up on adrenaline as well. Undercover hookup phew lord we are blessed haha

Lucy calls Tim after she gets away with Frank from the warehouse. Saying the OP is done. Frank has nothing left to build. Tim is flirty af in his reply. With a shit eating grin to go with it. Saying that’s too bad... Lucy is confused and says why? Tim referring to their hookup in the laundry room. Bummed he wasn't going to get another. Timothy Bradford I never haha This man is so different when he is truly loved and happy my goodness. I couldn't love it more.

Hard to believe this entire episode is canon. Tim is definitely loving his sex life with Lucy and proud to let her know about it. Hell so are we haha Horny Tim is hilarious and I love him so. They could find another laundry room for a repeat performance if he would like LOL Fanfic come to life this season swear to god. We live in a world where this scene happened and I’m dying.

They return home because at this point it’s their home. Gah love how Tim looks at Lucy as he approaches her. Man is so insanely in love with her. Lucy saying she needs a big meal, hot bath and quality sexy time. Heh. Then to sleep for 24 hours straight. I love how Tim encases her hands in his caressing them as they speak. Running his hands up and down hers. Needing this connection.

I love Tim being the physically affectionate one of the two. I always knew once they got together he would be the one who couldn’t keep his hands off her. Touching really is one of their many love languages and I adore it. Never saw them nearly as touchy with their ex’s. Just another reason proving why they’re so right for each other. Gonna be the death of me and I welcome it. Lucy can tell something is up. Asking him what’s going on?

Oh my poor damaged boy. Having a trauma response right now with her saying she needs time to decompress. I love him not deflecting and telling her how he’s feeling instead. That’s not easy for him. I also totally get his response. I still have trauma responses to things as well. Lucy knowing it is telling him it was only a week. That one nights keep will do her just fine. Trying to say without saying she’s not Isabel. Tim accepts her answer.

Lucy says she has to come clean about some thing though. That she knows she made him promise not to. But she watched 'Top chef' without him. For shame Lucy Chen . For shame LMAO I guess that monotony did get to her since she finished it without him.... Tim is so offended I’m dying. Calling her a 'Bad girlfriend' *screams into a pillow* They’re so friggin cute I am dying. Lucy's 'No, I'm sorry!' It is horrible Tim is right haha Making him promise not to then watching it without him. Every right to be playfully mad at her.

Lucy wastes no damn time and confronts Tim about the shooter in the alley. I love her so much for always calling him on his shit. Saying how he didn’t tell her he almost died in that alley. Tim brushing it off saying because he didn’t. Oh Timothy. Acting like her losing you wouldn’t completely wreck her. Absolutely devastate and ruin her like it would for you. I think that’s exactly why he did it though. Acting like it’s not a big deal when he knew it was.

Protecting her from that fact. Lucy coming at him saying doesn’t matter who told her. That they’ll set aside the fact he left it out of the report. 2x01 Tim would be appalled ha. Doing it for the same reasons Lucy did then. Insane how this same kind of fight still involves Isabel indirectly. Lucy can’t believe him right now. Acting like it’s nothing. Like she didn’t almost lose him.

We see a little more trauma Tim come out here. Just assuming she's keeping things from him when she's under. I so relate to him reacting this way I do. I misread something my best friend had texted me the other day. I made an assumption like Tim is here. My friend was wonderful texted me back ‘ Your trauma is showing.’ And it knocked me out of it. It’s involuntary when it runs so damn deep. And we know it does for him.

I’m so glad Lucy is there to knock him back out of it. Saying No you know Isabel did for a fact. Calling him right out for it. These kinds of fights are so good for them. Forces them to face the stuff they’re hiding. Things they didn’t really touch on last episode. This was a much better and more open conversation. Tim didn’t hide behind being ‘fine.’ And Lucy isn’t letting him get away with it. Tim can’t fight that logic and it’s all over his face in the second gif. The way his body slumps in reply.

Lucy making a strong ass point next. Saying if this is going to work between them he has to see the difference. She not wrong. He really does. Tim shooting back of course he can. (Babe you got some work to do...) What I love the most is Lucy said her piece. Put him his place about this. Which was needed and now Tim is saying his. The dialogue in this scene so much more productive than 5x20 was. Airing things out and how they actually feel. Tim voicing his need to know she will listen to him if he sounds the alarm.

That otherwise all the pain he went through was for nothing. Then he says the line that shows me Lucy is the love of his damn life. ‘I can’t lose you the way I lost her.’ Tears in this man’s beautiful eyes. Imma cry myself. Finally voicing the fear he kept inside last episode. He cannot lose this woman My heart. She is everything to him. Pulled him out of the depths of his pain and hurt. Brought him back to life. He loves her so much and is saying as such in this moment.

Lucy can see this and reassures him he won’t lose her that way. She would walk away for him if it ever got that close. Ugh my heart. He sounded the alarm earlier and she shut it down. So they both have stuff to work on. I mean it's why he brought it up. He felt like he was sounding the alarm in the laundry room. Lucy brushed it off saying she didn't want to tap out. But them having this conversation hopefully they can be more aware of these things for a future OP and in general really. The need to openly communicate is a must.

Tim says 'Okay.' Choosing to trust what she is saying. Then we get another glorious hug. The way he clings to her. His hand around her neck pulling her to him is so visceral. He loves her so damn much and it’s shown beautifully in this embrace. How much she means to him. Pulling her in close. Lucy doing the same thing clinging to him like a life raft. Her arms pulling him close to her as well. We see both her hands on his shoulders. *sigh*I'm so proud of them for both speaking their minds in this scene.

Lucy calling Tim out was so needed. He has to see she isn’t Isabel. If not it’ll destroy him. No one gets through to Tim like Lucy. This scene was so raw and honest. Very much needed after all that was left unsaid in 5x20. Never be over them being vulnerable with one another especially Tim. Not only telling her he needs her to listen but sharing he CANNOT lose her. Basically laying any cards she didn’t already have from him on the table. So proud of him. He’s come so far and this scene shows it. I truly love the writers for how real they write them. Phew Lord this was a good ep.

Hi there! Could you recommend a well written fic with a...happier ending? :) Where after a while they make different decisions (especially Hawk) and somehow manage to fix things. Alive. I saw a summary where the author fixes things, but Skippy kind of has the same fate only later and in a different way... and, well... it's ok if it's not all fluff but I would prefer not to cry out my eyes at the end. But if you say it still worth it, I believe you.. :) Thank you!

As you know, happy endings in this fandom (or at least within canon) are hard to come by. But we’ve suffered enough, haven't we? I hope these feel good fics hit the mark and hopefully work towards offsetting the extensive therapy that loving this show undoubtedly requires. Happy reading!

❤️‍🩹 the pawn in every lover's game by hyperfixfic* [G, 8K] Lucy decides to face Hawk after Mr. Laughlin slipped a letter under Hawk’s apartment door instead of ignoring the problems of her marriage. And there are many.

This one is more book-inspired, and Lucy-focused, which is something of a rarity. Love to see it! 

❤️‍🩹 Sands of Time (Turn Backwards) by @brouill3r // brouiller [NR, 7K WIP Ch.3/?] 1987 Hawkins Fuller is full of regrets for the life he's lived, though Tim once told him he regrets nothing. Hawk so wishes he could say the same.

In the still night air of a hotel room, clutching a cracked paperweight to his chest like it's carved of the finest gold, Hawk gets his wish.

Or, a time-travel fix-it fic that nobody asked for.

This has me glued to the edge of my seat. The pacing of the first chapter pulls you right in, adding to the tension in with its punctuated rhythm--absolutely perfect for the mindset of Hawk trying to come to grips with what is happening around him. 

❤️‍🩹 Again, only better by@madsmeetsmisha // madsmeetsmisha [M, 11K WIP Ch. 4/9] Hawk had no idea what was really going on here. All he knew was that he was back in 1954 and a completely distraught Tim was standing outside his door. And he also knew that he certainly wouldn't make the same mistake twice.

*DING DING DING… Haven’t read this yet, but by the summary and tags, this sounds like it might check all (or most) of your boxes… Tags: fix-it, someone dies from AIDS but not Tim, second changes, all the fluff we need to get over this

❤️‍🩹 Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps It’s Real by drabbleswabbles* [NR, 24K Ch. 9/?] And then it happened. The metallic screech of the gate, the shuffle of men stepping out beyond the prison walls. And suddenly there he was. His hair was shorter than he’d ever seen it. And his glasses were different. But it was him. Their eyes met. Tim stared at him in wide-eyed shock before recognition melted his features into a confused outrage.

Basically a fix-it in which Hawk finds himself back in the early 70s.

I haven’t had the chance to dive into this one, but it’s at the top of my list, along with so many other readers who can’t stop singing its praises. I’m sure you’ll love it just as much as they do.

❤️‍🩹 The Twelfth of Never by ghostandwitness* [M, 973 WIP Ch. 1/?] What if Hawk didn’t prevent Tim from passing the security clearance?

A retelling of Hawk and Tim’s story where their affair is continued through Tim’s employment at State, for those of us who want a different ending (but of course, not without a hard time getting there-After all it's Hawk and Tim).

I feel like this one might be flying under the radar, but it deserves all the fanfare. So far, this one is fantastic, and while it’s still currently a WIP, and can’t guarantee it will be exactly what you’re looking for, I can confidently say it will be enjoyed.

And that was the question, wasn't it?

Giving gifts, receiving gifts, walking like a gay man - like that could even be quantified; sex and sodomy. Those things were nothing, a mere drop in the ocean compared to that one question.

Had he ever been in love with another man?

For a moment, he almost expected to think of Kenny. That sweet boy who loved beautiful things, who'd followed Hawk into a war none of them had any place being.

Or, Tim Laughlin is a little harder to get out of Hawk's head, and the choice between yes and no isn't as easy to make.

Sometimes I get caught up thinking about the dead wife trope, especially in fallout. And I know it's something we all love to pick on, because the fridged woman to enhance the Man Pain is very tired.

But if you think about it with an in-universe frame of mind, it makes more sense for so many people, especially the older people, to have been married and lost a spouse. Yes the companions' stories are all emotionally fraught, but it would not actually be uncommon to hear. Lucy, killed by ghouls. Barbara, targeted by anti-synth hate crime. Nick Valentine's fiancee died pre-war! There's plenty of pre-war ghouls we get to meet, and I'm sure most of them have lost a partner along the way to the present.

I wish really that the death and loss was treated (both by fandom and canon) not as a man pain enhancement, but as a vector for exploring grief and hope and recovery in the worst of conditions.

After feeling like an absolute clown when I saw The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes movie in theaters, I figured it was time I sat down and read the original novel for myself. Unsurprisingly, I really enjoyed the book. It's definitely my favorite Hunger Games novel.

I should leave a disclaimer real quick. So I read the original trilogy a few years before the movies were released. I liked them well enough, but I always struggled to love them. Unfortunately, my biggest problem is Katniss. She's a great character. I do not like being stuck in her POV. I wish this was an ensemble story so that every side of the conflict is explored. In that way, the movies almost work better for me. I say almost, as I have such a bone to pick with Catching Fire throwing Katniss back into the arena, but that's another rant for another time.

My point is that I have never been passionate about the series, and I have not read the books in many, many years.

Yet, I still feel fairly confident calling this the best book in the series. I like exploring stories from the wrong perspective. Seeing the games from the eyes of the Capitol is genuinely interesting. I love the chapters where the students debate the philosophy of the games. I love watching Coriolanus justify his own decisions. I am obsessed with how this man thinks.

I cannot give enough praise for how Collins write Coriolanus's point of view. Here, the limited perspective works flawlessly. Seeing the world filtered through his eyes is interesting-- though I wonder why she chose to write this novel in limited third person? Did she want the veneer of objectivity that comes with third person POV, or is the first person POV trend in YA over?

I am not saying this book is perfect. It's goofy in one too many places, and there are a few plot points that just feel very immature to me (mainly, Coriolanus having to save Sejanus from the arena-- only a YA novel would make that justifiable).

My biggest problem is the loss of tension after the second act. As important as it is for the story to take Lucy Gray and Coriolanus out of the Capitol and the games, that third act really drags. There needed to be one more plotline carried over from the first two acts to help keep the suspension building. Collins really could have shaved 100 pages off this book, or made that third act into a second novel entirely.

With that in mind, I think I still like the movie better, if only for all the ways it condenses the story and fixes some of the pacing.

What really upsets me is how many people on Good Reads hate this book. I saw one review decrying the concept of this novel as ill-conceived-- something about trying to humanize the Hunger Games' Palpatine. That takes me back to how hung-up I am at the concept of a Hunger Games fandom. These books are so committed to their message and themes that it's always weird to see people talk about ships and stuff. I guess I just don't see the appeal.

When I was in high school, English teachers were just allowing the first book to be read and analyzed for class. According to a teacher friend of mine, the book is now an official part of the curriculum. I think that's a little unwarranted too. But if kids studied The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes in school... yeah, I would be okay with that one.

An Offer from an Avid Reader: Benedict, Women and the Mistress Question...

Something I’ve noticed while engaging within the Bridgerton fandom is the question about whether Benedict should ask the mistress question. Or how the show is going to reconcile ShowBenedict and BookBenedict’s character arcs due to their differences.

So, let’s have a look shall we?

This post is primarily about Benedict’s relationships with woman in the show and how this might mean a couple tweaks to how the plot of AOFAG is adapted. (Other aspects of his arc/journey will be addressed in another post).

The necessity for these tweaks? It is because the show has portrayed Benedict as a man who respect women regardless of their gender or station, and delights when they rebel against societal expectations rather than being intimidated or offended. Most significantly—Benedict handles rejection well.

Let’s start with women Benedict does not engage romantically with:

Eloise:

We consistently see Benedict supporting Eloise and her pursuits.

In S1 at the swings he states that she will have his “nothing but my full support and adoration” if she was Lady Whistledown. Throughout their ‘swing talks’ he does not ridicule her aspirations but listens and empathises—even in S2E8.

Then is S2 E6 when Eloise says she is attending a lecture on flower arranging and we have this lovely exchange.

Benedict 100% knows she is lying through her teeth. But does he rat her out? No, because Benedict understands that Eloise needs the space to explore herself.

Kate.

I think this is highly underappreciated within the fandom--Benedict adores Kate’s fiery nature.

This does not include his impressed expression when told that Kate shoots.

And maybe one could argue that he is delighted because Kate is dragging Anthony, but then later in the hunting scene Kate drags all the men and he is still delighted.

I want—no need—to see these two interact in S3.

Anyway. As seen with Kate and Eloise, Benedict is shown to appreciate and stan women who speak their mind and wish to be more than the societal expectations of the time.

And that does not even cover Benedict’s treatment of his previous love interests…

Madame Delacroix

Already in S1 we see how Benedict sees Madame Delacroix as more than her societal status and showing her respect and worth. When Eloise raises her suspicions about Madame Delacroix, Benedict is very quick to defend her.

“Do you think just because she [MD] has a paid occupation… that she is different, or somehow less worthy of my attention because she is not what society deems appropriate”

His obvious disappointment that Eloise would view Madame Delacroix as lesser due to her status, reflects how he values her beyond that status as well. His affection would be unwavering whether she be a Lady or a working-class woman, he sees her as more than the restrictive denominations that society has put upon her.

S1 also introduces us to a little detail—Benedict likes being bossed around. At Granville’s party he is more than happy to be led like a puppy with Madame Delacroix to Lucy Granville.

Tessa:

(a couple points overlaps with my Benedict Bridgerton emotional support animal post)

Initially, Benedict seems to be attracted to Tessa’s beauty, but upon their first meeting his first comment is about her talent not her appearance; “I must say that [her sketch] is rather good”. And when Tessa highlights his tone—“I am skilled at more than just posing naked”—he quickly restates his sincerity, (“I do not doubt it”) then continues to find out more about her not her body. (“So you work as a model to listen in on the lectures…ingenious”). As I have said before, this highlights how Benedict is empathising with Tessa, taking the time to understand her viewpoint. Thus, he views Tessa’s view as being worthy of consideration rather than dismissal. He views Tessa not as a woman, or a common worker, but as an artist just like him.

Even more so, we see Benedict respecting Tessa’s boundaries. As @ladyjenevia pointed out in her “Benedict Bridgerton is the BEST Bridgerton” video, Benedict takes his shirt off then pauses before undoing his breeches. It is not until Tessa nods, (showing her assent), that he starts unbuttoning his breeches. Benedict respects Tessa as an individual and respects her boundaries.

And as with Madame Delacroix, Benedict does not mind being controlled by Tessa. In their sex scene, Tessa pushes Benedict onto the bed and he seems utterly eager as she climbs on top of him.

So, overall, Benedict respects women, supports and even enjoys when they break societal expectation. Further, he treats/views women from a different class with equal respect and empathy, regardless of their status. And to top it off he respects a woman's consent.

 FURTHERMORE, HE ACCEPTS REJECTION.

In S2 we see the little dalliance between Madame Delacroix and Benedict cease. Benedict offers, lounging against a doorframe with a devilish smirk, to continue their dalliance. But as soon as Madame Delacroix politely rejects him, he straightens up into a more respectable position, as if they were not lovers but merely passers-by. He nods and leaves her be.

Yes, he is a little stung so snaps at Anthony, (speaking the truth all viewers are thinking), but overall, we do not see ugly words, a temper tantrum or vocal denial that is seen so often in media. And why would we? The writers have written Benedict as respecting working-class women, therefore if he respects women, he must respect their decisions.

So, is it any wonder why we have all fallen in love with him? And is this not great character building for when Benedict meets a certain woman from the working class, who goes toe to toe with him and challenges him?

BOOK 3 SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

The Mistress Question:

And this is where a slight conundrum is happening. Because if Benedict is a man who respects women’s boundaries and can swallow rejection—what happens to the character development shown in the book? How does one reconcile showBenedict with BookBenedict who literally grabs Sophie’s ankle when she wishes to exit the conversation; who is spiteful when she rejects his mistress offer; who continually approaches and harasses Sophie even though she asks him to respect her space?

Personally, I detest a man who does not respect a woman’s boundaries. And due to #MeToo, I am sure a lot of others might share the sentiment.

Perhaps then, we should get rid of the mistress plot completely?

I’m not so sure…

One could argue that unlike Tessa and Madame Delacroix, his relationship with Sophie is deeper, richer and therefore he would not let it go so easily when rejected.

And perhaps we can see a theme throughout his interactions with women--Benedict is very passive. Unlike Eloise who seeks out new experiences or knowledge, stuff happens to Benedict. Madame Delacroix approaches him. While obviously interested, it is Tessa who suggests he get naked, thus taking the next step in their dalliance. He enjoys Kate fiery temper but does not actively encourage it, and yes, he supports Eloise, but he does not necessarily encourage her.

And this is what Benedict needs to learn. He needs to understand that what he has with Sophie is greater than that between previous women. He must fight for their relationship rather than coasting along as he always has done. (More on that in my next post)

So what now?

I do not think the whole ‘mistress’ plot should be scrapped but it should be changed to fit in with the portrayal of Benedict on the show.

A couple things need to go, like Benedict pulling Sophie;s ankle, the blackmail, how condescending Benedict. But also…

Benedict asks Sophie to be his mistress once. This would be at the lake scene (one I shall detail more about in another post).

Sophie rejects him and he does fight for her but focuses on the emotional connection between them. The writers need to establish that this is not just a physical attraction—this will be helped with the fact that the period at My Cottage has gone on for weeks rather than days. (More details in another post). While not ideal, I think this would make the viewer feel a little more charitable because it is not all about sex.

(What could help this is if, according to viewers, we do not know Sophie’s past yet, so we do not know why she is so vehemently opposed to the offer).

Then after that initial rejection scene by the lake—Benedict stops asking her to be his mistress.

More importantly every decision eh makes about Sophie is because he wants to keep her safe—not because he is plotting to make her his mistress. Therefore he is repsecting her decision.

AKA: Ok, so you don’t want to be my mistress but I care about you, and I want you to be safe so why not work for my mother? So, you do not wish to work in London why not work in the country at Aubrey Hall?

Then to fix the whole harrassing thing that goes on, in London, Benedict seeks Sophie out at No.5 not to convince her to become his mistress, but because he wants to support her. For example, Queen Bee Helene being a nightmare? Benedict slips a little note that makes Sophie smile. These little or big moments that show that Benedict cares more fr Sophie’s wellbeing than his comfort by having her as a mistress.

So to suit the views of 2020s, and honour the character work already built—Benedict should only ask Sophie to be his mistress once. Then he respects her decision, shifting his focus to ensuring Sophie’s wellbeing even if that thwarts his plans for her to become his mistress.

Because we modern viewers deserve a man who repsects women, their boundaries AND speaks beautiful poetry off the cuff. Why not? This is Bridgerton after all.

How about Alastor? :P

These answers aren't spoiler free!

My first impression:

It's so hard to say cause that was all the way back in 2019... as far I can recall, he was an immediate fave.

My impression now:

STILL VERY MUCH A FAVE, NOW WITH CONTEXT BEHIND IT. He was already really endearing to me with his sarcasm and clear hidden power (I love me a good villain), the design, etc. Seeing a bit more of his personality ('you don't have to fuck to be fab' from the VA trying to excuse this deer's fruity ass behavior in the episode 7 preview I love it), seeing what gets to him as a character, finding out that he's also got some pretty fucked up shit happening to him? I want to unravel this man like a ball of string.

Favorite thing about that character:

I can't choose one I love so much about him... TBH I think the potential of him might be it. With what we have been given I have so many thoughts and hopes about him. Whether canon lives up to expectations or blows me away, I'll have a lot of fun with him.

Least favorite thing:

If his trivia page is to believed, my man apparently has rancid dental hygiene. I choose to Ignore it.

Favorite line/scene:

So far it is tied between what we saw in the episode 7 preview and his reaction to Husk saying that he is on a leash. Love my man being so close to Losing It.

Favorite interaction that character has with another:

Calling Husk his pet. His little near sing song exclamation of that made my brain go a little rabid.

A character that I wish that character would interact with more:

All of them.... Husk and Niffty, or a focus on Husk. Husk seems to know quite a bit about Al and even (sometimes) has the balls to stand up to him. I want to see more of that.

Another character from another fandom that reminds me of that character:

Snatcher. It doesn't help that Husk reminds me of Conductor and I dig a fan dynamic of Snatcher doing Soul Shenanigans with the Conductor.

A headcanon about that character:

He has a tail. I think that has been confirmed as not true but you can rip that tail from my cold dead hands.

A song that reminds of that character:

I haven't actually found any that remind me of him that aren't ABOUT him because the genres he likes are outside of my preferred listening range.

I'm gonna link the Time Warp though because I think the music at least is up his alley.

An unpopular opinion about that character:

I don't know what the popular or unpopular opinions are, cause I look for fanart/fan writing and avoid everything else like the plague... A lot of people seem to really be clinging to the idea of him being like a father to Charlie thanks to ep 5, and while it is cute and I wholeheartedly support the content and want more....

That whole debacle was NOT Alastor wanting to be seen as a father figure. It was 100% to get under Lucifer's skin since Luci just completely undermines him/his power (I also have theories about it that can not currently be confirmed so..) Dad!Alastor is great but that's just the Incorrect interpretation canonically speaking.

I still will happily enjoy the fancontent though.

i never thought of those 3 old man/young man parallels before! and they happen one right after the other... (though the seward/van helsing one has a backstory spanning years before the novel)

and it's a variety too! old abuser/young victim with drac/jon, old victim/young abuser with ren/jack, old equal/young equal with helward

I wish there was more analysis about this. But honestly you could read the same book a million times and not see what's right in front of you. As I said before, the first 1/5th of the novel has an insane grip on people, so theres a lot of introspection on Drac/Jonathan's relationship and not a lot on the other two. Then usually people discuss Mina and her relationships with Dracula and Van Helsing, or Lucy, but really not so much Renfield. Like I could go find a post about the same three relationships and someone would interpret entirely the opposite of me.

Like, last year I was really uncomfortable in discussing RenfieId because reading the novel alone by yourself vs reading it together collectively on the Internet are very different things! Like I just didn't feel as empathetic towards him, and ultimately I had to reflect on why I felt that way. Also last year I was less involved in DD during the summer months because everyone was so cagey about RenfieId and Jack, it felt like I had no voice on the issue. But the truth is I was more that comfortable with my own assumptions and didn't realize how much more I needed to learn.

Even helward, I geniunely loved their bromance pre- DD and I did mourn the fact that no adaption has captured their friendship, but I didn't think about it too deeply (also tumblr dracula fandom pre 2020 was like, tiny). Its only when I slowed down and read each entry day by day that I realized how important their relationship is to the plot! Not only that, it really grounds the book as being about the spread of information, of what qualifies madness, there's a lot that doesn't even need to be about romance or sexul tension. And I'm kind of baffled at the lack of interest, to be honest. Especially since Jack is literally one of the main characters and voice of the story and Van Helsing went on to become the iconic figure we know today.

So yeah, thank you for liking my little essay. I am really happy you liked it, and I hope to see more people discuss these points in Dracula more!

Beautiful day gone south

The blood felt warm and sticky. It gushed out between her fingers and colored her hands in bright red. She pressed down as hard as she could and he groaned. Will and Jay Halstead are in Los Angeles visiting their friend Connor Rhodes who moved there a year ago to work at UCLA. It was supposed to be a vacation! A little escape from Chicago with sun, beach, fun and drinks. But somehow everything turns out quite differently when an earthquake hits the city and Will and Jay are buried under tons of debris.

Trust and betrayal

Connor's day starts out perfect - until he is wrongfully accused of sexually assaulting a young woman. Suddenly everybody hates him, nobody believes in his innocence, he is suspended and arrested. Who is this woman that accused him of raping her? And what kind of game is she playing? Will Connor be found innocent or stumble deeper and deeper into this mess?

It should have been me

Terry's death hit Jay really hard. It triggers his PTSD and he's spiraling down. But before he can hit rock bottom, somebody from Jay's past turns up and something even worse happens. Something that Jay and his brother Will may not get out of alive...

This story is set right after 3x17.

Shallow waters

If anybody had told Jay that morning that he would drown in thigh deep water in the middle of Chicago, he would have laughed. But right now, he didn’t feel like laughing as the water swashed over his mouth.

Broken

Brock’s last conscious thought was „Oh, fuck – that was it!”. He didn’t feel the shuddering of his body when it impacted with ground. Didn’t feel the bones splintering. Didn’t feel his limbs go slack. He didn’t feel the blood seeping from his nose and head wound, forming a little pool on the forest floor. He also didn’t hear his brother’s screaming. Didn’t hear Cerberus whining.

Wake up, sleeping beauty!

Clay still lay on his side, as he had before, eyes closed and fast asleep. He looked pale. Stella crouched down in front of him smiling, gently stroking his hair. “Hey, wake up, sleeping beauty.” She kissed him, first on his forehead, then on his lips. He didn’t move. Why didn’t he move?

Clay just doesn't wake up the morning after they came home from deployment in Afghanistan. What happened? Will he be ok?

Cold as ice

Sonny Quinn’s right leg was on fire. Well, obviously not literally, as he was lying on his back on the icy ground - in the snow of a dense larch forest. He was sure the leg was broken. He had sneaked a peak down his leg – and no leg should ever be bent in such an angle. But that wasn’t his top concern at the moment. Clay, his best friend, lay about 5 meters from him, his body curled around the tree trunk that had broken his fall down the steep slope - as if he was hugging it. Lifeless.

Too much blood

Brock felt something impact with the back of his head. Hard. His head, and with it his whole body, flew forward and stars exploded in front of his eyes.

Brock is mugged on his way home from the bar.

Two years. It had been two years since the last time you saw your father or talked to him. You were now 16 years old, and had changed a lot both physically and mentally. Your dad was a ranger in the military and was currently deployed in a top secret mission, hence why you couldn’t contact him. Which made you scared and anxious, terrified that one day someone would knocking on your door saying he died. You were put in homeschooling before your dad deployed, assuring your safety.

But who took care of you while your dad was gone? Well, that would be sweet Lucy Henderson, your next door neighbor, who didn’t hesitate to be your guardian. After all she was a widow and didn’t have any kids. In her own words “your dad is my son and you are my granddaughter”. She was like the grandma figure you no longer had and also the only feminine figure in your life -she was a very important part of your daily life-.

Today was another normal day in Lucy’s household you had woken up early Friday, and no school. So you thought about painting or drawing just to pass time. And essentially forget about the fact that you really felt disconnected.

“Nana have you seen my drawing notebook?” you asked walking in the kitchen where Lucy was cocking an apple pie. At your voice she turned around smiling before turning all the way to face you.

“Yes honey, I believe you left it in the porch swing” Lucy answered pointing to the swing through the window. You loved to be there, just spend afternoons looking at the passing cars, the parents and their kids.

“Right sorry” you answered sitting down on the stool, sad look on your face. Lucy knew exactly what was going through your mind, because quite frankly it was going through hers as well.

“I miss him too sweet pie” she said reaching over the counter to hold your hands.

“I wish he was here right now. I just want to hug him nana” you whispered, whipping the tears that managed to escape your eyes. You felt like if more time went by, the more strangers you would be to each other, you missed your dad like crazy. She smiled at you before kissing your hands, making you smile. You stood up rounding the kitchen aisle and giving her a bear hug to which she chuckled. Breaking the hug you made your way to your room in her house and she went back to backing.

Meanwhile in a bus reaching Chicago another conversation was being held. One army ranger holding a picture of a girl in his hand, a sweet smile on his face in anticipation. It was a picture of you in your 14th birthday right before he left.

“When was the last time you saw her?” Mouse -your dads new best friend asked- making Jay turn to look at him, shaking his head before answering

“2 years, 8 months and 10 days” Jay answered smirking at the fact that it wouldn’t be longer than an hour until he would get the chance to see his little girl, who wasn’t little anymore.

“Man she must be excited” Mouse laughed slightly looking at Jay, who looked down not answering. You would be, right?

“I hope” Jay answered making Mouse furrow his eyebrows.

“What do you mean?” he asked, to which Jay sighed.

“She doesn’t know. Haven’t talked to her since the day I left, couldn’t- couldn’t talk to her. I really hope she forgives me- you know two years can do a lot to someone. And I wasn’t there so I can only pray she can forgive me” with that Jay looked out the window, Mouse leaving the conversation behind at the change of mood.

To say Jay was terrified was underestimating things. Standing in front of Lucy’s house Jay’s hands could only shake at the anticipation. Mouse had tried to calm him down but nothing work on his friend. Mouse was there in moral support -knowing Jay would need it- and he was also going to be staying at Jay’s house for a while.

“Do you want me to knock?” Mouse asked him, to which Jay nodded. Knocking on the door Mouse looked back at his friend at the bottom of the steps, waiting when an old woman appeared, smile falling instantly at the sight of the soldier. She took a deep breath before speaking,

“If it is bad news I don’t want to call her just yet” she said tears coming to her eyes, to which Mouse shook his head smiling a little before stepping aside for her to see Jay’s standing figure at the bottom of the steps.

“Oh goodness grace…I knew it!” Lucy laughed, moving to hug him, Jay chuckling at the sight of her.

“Oh my boy. Look at you” Jay smiled sweetly at the woman while she had a hand on his cheek looking for any kind of bruising. After a moment she smiled sweetly at him relieved her boy was back and in one piece, or at least physically.

“You alright?” she asked with a serious look, he nodded slightly.

“I will be. H-how is she?” he asked nervously, hearing Lucy laugh. She knew by his body language that he was very much scared, Lucy could always tell,

“Sassy, sweet- so beautiful, bigger…” she said before turning around to the house,

“Y/N! Come down here hon!” Lucy shouted to you. Hearing her call you, you assumed it was to eat that delicious pie.

“Coming!” running down the stairs you were met with the front door opened giving you full view of who was standing at the bottom of the front steps. Lucy and another guy slightly to the side. You felt how your body freezed, forgeting how to function, you didn’t even know you were crying until a sob escaped your lips.

“Is that your little girl?��� Mouse leaned whispering to Jay, who smiled bigger than ever,

“That’s my little girl” he said taking his gaze away from you looking at Mouse, who was met with the most proud expression he has ever seen, before being pulled away by a scream.

“DAD!” with that Jay was met with a body colliding onto his, air leaving his lungs for a moment. Right before coconut shampoo and vanilla perfume invaded his senses. Not hesitating twice to wrap his not so little girl in a much needed, much anticipated embrace. Pulling away, Jay’s hands went to your face, putting the piece of hair that escaped behind your ears giving him the best view he has ever seen. The view he missed like crazy. The sight of his favorite person in the whole world, his daughter.

“You’re home…” you said giving him a teary smile to which he matched, kissing the top of her head without taking his hands off her face.

“You kept your promise” you sobbed giving him a relieved yet teary smile,

“You look so big baby” he whispered between laughs looking at you with heart eyes while brushing your head with so much love it made you want to cry again. This made you giggle slightly before hugging his waist again. Jay placed his nose in your head, closing his eyes. This was what home felt like.

“I’m home” Jay nodded tears running down his cheeks and the biggest smile he’s ever shared with the world.

I totally understand people's frustration with the lack of Buddie interaction but let me just say one thing. If Kristen really disliked Buddie why open with such a beautiful family scene. The dim lighting, the lasagna, the roasting, the couch metaphor that has been in play since Taylor!!! Where is that couch by the way. Lucy better not being sitting where family game nights were held lol.

But seriously you could have just had Buddie in the locker room with a 3 sentence exchange "end scene".

None of us can promise they will be Canon but if I had my doubts it's not because of the beginning of the season. If I am actually being really honest if you asked me in S3 which one could have been gay I would have guessed Buck. Baby me then would never had guessed that in S6 I was more sure Eddie Diaz was queer and Buck may not be TBH. I only had that thought back then because that was actually my worst fear if they didn't go Canon. That one of them would end up with a man and the other with a women. I should probably see a therapist about that!!!

Yes, I fully agree. I was going to mention in this ask reply the lasagna scene as something that says that 911 obviously wants us to know they have not forgotten about Buddifer or are ignoring it, but I had so much to say, I ended up forgetting that bit, so thank you for adding it in! And you phrased it so well, too. Everything about that scene was very deliberate.

And yes, I’ve said it time and again, I can’t know that Buddie will go canon, I’m just out here, hoping for it and explaining why, based on the story as it’s been told so far, I can’t see another other satisfactory resolution for either Buck or Eddie (or for that matter, even Chris in terms of getting both of the people he sees at a certain point as his parents under one roof, as we’ve seen is his secret wish in 210).

As for Buck, I’ve always thought he oozed bi energy since 107 and his bonding with the gay vic. That was only reinforced along the way, and now we have stuff like Buck casually quoting gay anthems to Eddie like it’s nothing. I’m sorry, no matter who his partners end up being canonically by the time the show is over, there is no way that boy is straight. IDK if that helps you, but that is the one thing I will insist on. Queer Buck is real and deserves all the love.

You're so lovely, and I hope you're write about kr and 6b. In my opinion she's separating them cause she has no intention of doing buddie canon, but not to stop us from since she knows it's impossibile, but I think she's afraid of being accused of queerbaiting again from journalists. I mean she brought back Carla after 20 episodes to avoid buck being there, not to the dance, but just helping chris dress, and that scene with buck hen and denny? Like see he hangs out with all the 118 kids

Awwww, thank you so much for the kind words! You’re lovely, too! *hugs* As for Kristen... I don’t think she wants to stop us from shipping Buddie, she has stuff to gain from us shipping (Keeps the current viewership and gets a very active fandom that through online content is bringing in new viewers even during s6), and she can lose things if we stop shipping (she’s lose viewers, she’ll lose the active online fandom, and those fans who get frustrated and give up? They’ll accuse her of queerbaiting for sure). And yes, I do believe the 601 scene is a sign that’s not the direction Kristen means to follow. Am I right? We’ll get a better idea once 6b airs. Last season, 5b made it clear that the distance in 5a was not meant to tear Buddie apart, so I tend to believe that’s what we’ll have this year, too. But if s6 wraps up without Buddie coming back together, then I guess we’ll have an answer (not necessarily a definitive one. I've said before that you can’t judge a show on the issue of queerbaiting until it’s off the air, ‘coz as long as it’s on, the execs can always choose to change direction and make the same sex ship happen. This would be especially true in the case of 911, if Tim decides to step back in and change the course Kristen set).

Hey! So I know you talked about this thing a lot but there's something that I don't understand about what kristen said about exploring other dynamics. What I don't understand is that yes we had some more hen/buck and chim/eddie scenes, but the only dynamic that was pratically absent from 6a was just buddie, we still got some hen/chim scenes. And while i get don't make them talk about the donor for now, I think they could still make some space for some buddie scenes, what do you think?

Hi Nonnie! You’re right, we did get some Hen & Chim. But TBH, Hen & Buck isn’t that new either, we just got a bit more of it than in previous seasons. Neither is Eddie & Carla that new. Carla was used in the past as well when they needed some stuff to happen away from Buck, like in 312 when it absolutely could NOT be Buck there when Eddie first meets Ana or you know our moron Diaz boy wouldn’t have even looked at her. And Carla was also used in 510, so that when Eddie announces he’s leaving, it came as a shock to Buck. None of that kept Buddie from being intense and domestic and there for each other in the long run. And the Chim & Eddie stuff we got this season was hardly substantial. It’s not like it feels as if these two are suddenly each other’s new besties. I think Kristen does wanna keep Buddie apart for a bit, and she uses other dynamics to solidify the sense of A TEAM, while also preparing us for Buddie coming back together in 6b. I could be wrong, of course, as I told the previous Nonnie! But that’s how the story telling so far this season feels to me. And I also wouldn’t take any interviews too seriously. Cast and show runners alike, when they do PR for their show, they have one job: to get you to keep watching. So they will say whatever they think will do that. If Kristen doesn’t wanna reveal her real 6b plans, but she does want us to be patient and wait for Buddie’s return in 6b, and she thinks that will best be served by saying she’s just exploring new dynamics, then that’s what she’ll say, whether it’s accurate or not.

Imagine being so sensitive that you have to attack others when you feel your ship is "under attack" (criticized). ... This has been my common experience with Big Four shippers, and it looks like my pause from the FT fandom has not changed this trend. I really shouldn't be surprised~... But let's get into it.

A simple post on my preferences towards FT ships in general, right? I mean, it was *asked* of me. I'm gonna give my opinion. I honestly just hate how Jerza is portrayed in canon. That's the crux of my argument; I'm not attacking Jerza shippers or even necessarily the ship itself. If you want to ship Jerza, that's your prerogative. Ship them how you want, too. But here's the thing: I don't like how canon presents Jerza. If you observe Erza throughout the series, there's a distinct difference between Erza interacting with, say, Fairy Tail or other Guilds, and Erza interacting with Jellal. It just... doesn't go anywhere. And moreover, we're supposed to just sweep what Jellal does under the rug. That he took over the Tower of Heaven, forced Erza's friends into slavery, chased Erza away and ordered her never to come back, and then later... killed Simon, one of Erza's closest friends. I've never bought into that "possession" bs, and we have people like Ultear taking the fall for Jellal because he's too "guilty" to man up and take accountability. Consequentially, whenever Erza and Jellal talk, the mood's always dismal and uncertain, and Erza is COMPLETELY different from when she's talking to Makarov, or Natsu, or Lucy, or Gray... It's NOT vulnerability being shown, Jerza is literally running on a hamster wheel and going NOWWHERE... And we're just supposed to be fine with that? Accept that Erza has "forgiven" Jellal and that it's okay to force others to forgive him, too...? It's JUST my preference, posted here on this blog, but I don't like Jerza. It makes me "anti-Jerza" insofar that I really, really disapprove of the direction canon took with it. .... And I'm not gonna apologize for that.

... But wait~! Here comes our latest challenger, idklanguages. Of course, of course, of course. How silly of me. Erza's not "scared" of Jellal, "that's how she acts when she's in love." It's also a bit sad this guy has to tack on the end that she "doesn't" love Natsu, like he's reassuring himself.

... But we're not done. No, sir.

*pinches nose* It's not about the fact she "has to be a badass all the time." Of course everyone has moments of vulnerability. ... But when she's with Jellal, that's NOT being vulnerable. She's literally feeling sorry for him, wishes things were different, wishes Jellal could be that boy in the tower who saved her way back when. This mood never changes, and Jellal perpetually brings Erza down to this one-dimensional girl that ultimately forces others to accept Jellal...even if he kills your brother. Because holding a grudge over that wouldn't make sense at all~ -_____-

And right here's when idklanguages begins to unravel into ad hominems and being contrary for the sake of being contrary. Where the hell is your argument, idklanguages? "You can love someone and NOT be in a relationship"... I've addressed why I loathe the direction that canon's gone, why that "love" is honestly toxic. But you keep going on and on and on without making ANY points. At this point you're in it just to be contrary.

You miss the point ENTIRELY with this nonsense. Erza, frankly, IS obsessive over Jellal with how Mashima's portrayed the dynamic. She URGES people to just accept the past and move on, and while that's all well and good, the issue is how flippant Erza is portrayed over Simon's death. She cares more about supporting her "crush", who's hurt her, traumatized her, and killed one of her best friends... as opposed to understanding how Simon's sister must feel. Here's the thing: Erza's "acceptance" of Jellal and his past sins might have been admirable if she didn't force others into doing the same, and if Jellal did something to warrant such a relationship with Erza. ... But he doesn't. His existence, as canon portrays him, is to make people pity him and forever whine about whether or not he'll make up for his past transgressions. He SHOULD feel guilty for everything, but he could also stand to accept and feel more confident about the good that he's supposedly doing, wiping out minor Dark Guilds. A life of selflessness and charity on his part isn't a bad thing; it's what he wants, frankly. But Mashima keeps pushing the Jerza agenda even though there's been no progress. No development. If that somehow appeals to you, fine. But I'll die on this hill that canon Jerza is toxic, and I'm not gonna apologize for my opinion.

.... So yeah. We reach the end of this rant, with idklanguages making a bunch of hot air and a whole lot of, "No, I'M right, YOU'RE wrong, nyah!!!!!" It's fine for you to not like Natza, idklanguages, but just accept that I'm gonna do the same for Jerza... and properly outline arguments for WHY I think it's a toxic ship. Jerza shippers are more than welcome to keep shipping what they do - and who knows? Maybe your ideas and stories find a way to properly redeem Jellal, to give Erza a reason to look past everything he's done to her; or maybe you completely do away with all the pain he's caused her. Whatever floats your boat, more power to you. ... But just like how you lot treat Natza as "non-existent", have your own opinions, I'm gonna criticize Jerza. ... Because it DOES have problems in the source material. In this case, you ARE the aggressor, idklanguages. And all you're doing is spewing hot air. (❋•‿•❋) But go on. Come at me. This is not my first FT rodeo with Big Four fans.

Oh gosh. You couldn't have picked a more difficult fic for this question, I don't think. Actually, this is just a difficult question in general. I have no idea what I wish someone would ask me about any of my fics, to be honest. Sorry that's such a terrible answer

34. What aspects of your writing are inspired by/taken from your real life?

A lot of the emotion, especially associated with childhood trauma, inspires my writing for Lucy and Tim. My childhood was made up of pieces of both of their childhoods, and I relate to both characters in that way so much. While I always try to not project too much of myself onto the characters, what I've been through definitely informs how I interpret and understand them

I also just think life experience in general inspires everyone's writing. I look back at the fics I wrote for a different fandom years ago, back when I hadn't ever been in a real adult relationship, and I can see how I missed the mark on some things

44. If you take/write prompts: do you prefer dialogue or scenario/narrative prompts?

Hmm... it depends. Scenario/narrative prompts work for me sometimes, if it's a scenario I can actually see playing out in a way that makes sense for the characters. But the dialogue ones give a lot more flexibility for me to make it into whatever I want, and often times my brain does better having that flexibility

45. What’s something you’ve improved on since you started writing fic?

To echo what I said above, I think just as I've gotten older I've gotten better able to understand adult characters and adult relationships, and I'd like to think my fics have gotten more mature and more in-depth as a result

Answered here and here, but I can share one more snippet as well, this time from an alternate version of 5x08 that I haven't worked on in months because I'm just very stuck. Maybe this will get the words flowing again:

“Do you love him?” “That’s not. We haven’t even been together that long,” Lucy stammers, and she knows she sounds as unconvincing to Tim as she does to herself. And damn it, this is exactly why she didn’t want to ride with him today. She doesn’t need Tim to know that her relationship is a mess, and she absolutely doesn’t need him to be asking her questions and poking holes in the – flimsy, she realizes now – narrative she’s built for herself. “He loves you,” Tim says, the words soft but certain. “I know,” Lucy replies indignantly. “I know,” she says again, though this time it sounds more like resignation. “I should love him. Chris is so great in so many ways.” Tim internally rolls his eyes because no, from his interactions with the man, Chris is not that great in any way. But that’s not the point, so he keeps his mouth shut and allows Lucy to continue because he knows if she’s going to reach what seems – to him, at least – like the obvious conclusion, she’s going to have to talk herself through it. “He’s just… he’s not you.”

I'm bored, so I'm going to make a list of my favourite fictional characters.

One Piece:

Sanji (I believe in pre-timeskip Sanji supremacy)

Portgas D Ace (I'm still so salty at the fact that he died istg he didn't deserve it)

Sir Crocodile (best. villain. hands down. he's so goddamn cool)

Mob Psycho 100:

Reigen Arataka (he's literally the perfect man, and I know many people on this website agree with me)

Mob (small esper boy deserves all the hugs)

Teru Hanazawa (I love his character development! Also there's something about his design that makes him very likable, probably the hair)

Bungō Stray Dogs:

Atsushi Nakajima (At-sushi Roll is one of my favourite protagonists, even though I feel like he gets overshadowed by Dazai most of the time)

Edogawa Rampo and Akiko Yosano (you have no idea how much I ship these two. I love them sm)

Chūya Nakahara (I like the fact that he has a petite figure but still manages to be the coolest mfer in yokohama)

Lovecraft and Steinbeck (aka ocean man and grape boy. honestly would've liked to see more of their antics)

Lucy Heartphilia (many people hate her but I don't care, honestly. FT was my first anime that wasn't one of the "big three" - and I liked her so much, she felt like a sisterly figure. Also, she dreams of becoming a writer just like me so...yep. She's a comfort character to me)

Gajeel (I only wish good things for him, bro turned his life around after a youth spent being cruel and murderous!)

Levy (I only wish good things for her, sis helped a cruel murderer on his way to redemption!)

The Elder Scrolls series:

Vivec (cool design, deep lore master, a rather peculiar backstory)

Martin Septim (one of my comfort characters, he has a piece of my heart)

Sheogorath (I'm beginning to feel like a mad god, mad god! He's bonkers, the incarnation of absurdity - and I love him for that reason)

Paarthurnax (old, wise, committed atrocities in the past but he's trying to repent... what's not to like?)

Fire Emblem:

Lyn (badass and elegant at the same time! She's my favourite character to use during tournaments in FEH)

Claude (i simp for this man so much it's unreal)

The Emerged World:

Nihal (an incredible warrior, worthy of legends and all the highest honors)

Sennar (a fool in love, redhead mage, powerful and loyal. the perfect man)

Laio (i'm still not over him. my small boy, he deserved so much more)

Aster (the twist when Nihal finally confronts him is still one of my favourites in all of fiction. an incredibly well written villain)

Learco (I was rooting for him since he was first introduced, I knew he was a good man at his core. Besides, he and Dubhe are an incredibly cute couple)

Adhara (I actually haven't read all of the third trilogy but I have a feeling she'll do great things. I just wonder...who was she, before losing her memories?)

The Lord of the Rings

Pippin (he's so tiny! billy boyd's interpretation of him in the movies is so good.)

Boromir (he's so much more than what people usually make him out to be. I guess I have a thing for people who do bad stuff but then try to redeem even though the price to pay for it is their life)

Elrond (a king, a strong warrior, who's also as gentle as summer)

Randolph Carter (I find it kinda inspirational that he always manages to get through whatever his bizarre life throws at him: it's like he's oblivious to the fact he's supposed to be in a series of horror stories - except maybe for "The Statement" - Warren's death really shook him... But then in Dream Quest it seems like he's having the time of his life. Also, I love the way the fandom treats him, he's like a treasure)

After finishing Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, I think this has given me some more insight on how I see Rayla vs. how a lot of other fans see her.

Lucy is pretty much the kind of person that Rayla fans imagine Rayla as being. She’s stoic, strong, and brave, while also hiding a caring and vulnerable side. She was a child soldier who was brought up under brutal conditions that made her deadly but also left her traumatized, as her upbringing led to the deaths of almost everyone she knew. She’s driven to protect those she cares about, but has an inability to communicate that leads her into danger and, ultimately, the tragic death of the man she was trying to protect. Lucy sees herself as undeserving of the kind of life and freedom she wishes for David, and David’s sacrifice is (at least implied) starting to let Lucy see that her life may indeed have value.

Rayla does have most of not all of these positive qualities. Don’t get me wrong. The issue is that Rayla has certain negative traits that Lucy does not have.

Rayla is marked by a high degree of pride that Lucy does not have. While we see Rayla express shame for herself, she also frequently talks up her abilities as well (both of these stem from pride. Yes, shame stems from pride, to those of you who watched ATLA).

Rayla also fails at communicating what she’s feeling and doing, much like Lucy. However, this isn’t really similar to Lucy, who is this way with David to keep him away from people who are actively hunting him (so it’s understandable, even if unwise, for Lucy to be secretive around David). Rayla, meanwhile, is marked by an inability to take Callum and his concerns seriously. There have been debates as to whether or not Rayla left Callum because she thought he was weak or inferior. Regardless of that, the fact remains that Rayla expressed her concerns about Callum coming along, heard Callum’s reasons for wanting to go, and then simply ignored them and left without ever having a response. It’s not even that Rayla looked down at Callum’s abilities, she just up and decided to ignore them altogether. This carries on into s4, where Rayla completely dismissed Callum’s concerns out of hand without ever considering how he felt about being Aaravos’ puppet.

The reason I’m bringing all of this up is because: I think the fandom sees Rayla a certain way, which lines up remarkably similar to the kind of person Lucy from Edgerunners is. But the differences between who Lucy and Rayla canonically are should show how, maybe, fanon isn’t right about everything when it comes to Rayla. She may have principles she sticks with, but Rayla’s flaws (pride and inability to take her loved one seriously) are big-time issues that are usually ignored.
