Imagine: you are the fresh-out-of-highschool nephew of a scientist, he raised you to be as obsessed with proving that magic exists and it comes from a parallel magic plant world as he is (gone wrong). You believe none of that and want to get into medicine to study genetics and prove him wrong to make a point (your relationship isn't so bad but he WILL owe you those 20$)
But then one day you're hanging around in a meadow (which you're pretty sure is private property) and a lanky ass guy(person?) comes running at you and tells you you have to run as well. You're used to running from cops because your uncle takes you to some fun research and sample-taking trips, so you bolt. He follows you and obviously, this guy is as used to running as a potted plant, because he keeps tripping.
Anyway, you take him to your home and then to the lab to treat a weird injury he got, but you notice that thin scar tissue has already formed over it (you worry because the wound looks greenish and weirdly leaf-shaped. How did they even manage to get it infected so quickly??)
And it turns out that this anxious idiot thinks this is NORMAL???? you run some tests on them (he doesn't object because. Well, maybe he just doesn't like disagreements)and whatever in the everloving holy fuck is going on, THE GUY'S DNA MATCHES THE ONE OF A PLANT. The guy had no idea of any of this and he just tells you that "sometimes weird creatures start chasing me if I stay too long in nature areas" and you realise you ntver saw what was chasing both of you. You decide this plant guy is too interesting to simply stop talking to. He could make a fine dissertation paper for when you finish your studies! Which makes it awfully convenient when he sort of seems to like you. That, apparently, makes you friends (good, you didn't even have to go through the awkward are-we-or-are-we-not-friends stage) and he keeps showing up, so at one point you guys start texting.
He tends to be quite proper so, when one day he just texts you a location (in the forest, mind you), you become concerned and go straight there. It turns out the idiot talked to a professor from the university course in linguistics he wants to take once he starts college, and the clarifications (clarifications on the topic they refused to answer what it was) led them here. To a fucking puddle. In the middle of the forest. And before you can stop them, he sticks his HAND in it??????? And it comes out looking like the flesh had given out. But after some seconds it looks like it's healing? And after a few minutes of you taking pictures (for scientific reference), it's alright again. You want to stick your hand into the puddle too (but you wear gloves because what kind of idiot does what he did. And he didn't look like they were in pain for even a second in the entire process. What qthe fuck Neri)
Ypu stick your hand in the puddle, up to your wrist, and almost immediately take it out because it feels like it's burning. And it WAS really burning, your fingertips started smoking and your fingernails looked like they're melting (you didn't know that fingernails could do that) and your veins looked red through your skin (which was alarming to a whole new level because you have dark skin and your veins had NEVER been visible in that area of your body)
You both go back to your house and your uncle treats you. He is as weird as usual but now you're starting to believe he's the only knowledgeable person here. There is so much you don't know and once Neri leaves, you ask your uncle to tell you (again, but now you will be paying attention) all he knows about this magic research of his, and show him the DNA thing you got from Neri when you met.
This starts a chain reaction, because Neri has been researching stuff as well, with that one professor (whom you do not trust because he led you both to the Death Puddle of Burning, and your hand doesn't seem to be recovering at all. In fact, the burning is spreading bit by bit through your arm.). So far you have only found traces of similar creatures in forest and swamp environments from your uncle's field trip samples, while he has found. Well. An address that most certainly shouldn't exist.
You guys call the Yellow Pages number for it, and what responds doesn't appear to be talking because you don't hear jack, but Neri seems to hear it. He hears the thing on the other side of the phone. They tell you that the woman was perfectly lovely and normal, and you tell them that you didn't hear a single sound in the entire 5 minutes the phone call lasted. Road trip ahead (sure hope it doesn't)
One of your mutual friends, Lilian, who would like to study genetics as well, interrogates both of you because she thinks you're doing drugs. She ends up even more concerned and decides to tag along. Her girlfriend, Marcela (who wants to get into mechatronic engineering, either that or physics), comes too because she wants to record it all.)
You get to the little cabin, and it looks empty and clean. Save from the huge ass pot of HUGE half-dead blue irises. Since all 3 of you were already expecting not to hear anything, you let Neri fool around while Marcela records. Until something on her camera shows up: (you know those stories about name-stealing faeries? Do you know those stories about gnomes? Forget all of it. The thing on Marce's camera was as if a flower was anthropomorphic. It could roughly be a middle-aged short woman, but her legs were stuffed into several flower pots.)
Neri kept looking at her and acting as if they were talking (they were, you know that now), but you didn't know what came over you when you took the camera and smashed it. (Perhaps it was the flash of guilt over recording the plant person. You wouldn't have liked it if that were you, even if you couldn't see it. See her.)
Once you looked up, there she was. The plant lady looked at you, and you didn't know what you should have done. You would probably have slowly walked away if your hand (entire forearm) hadn't started burning again when she touched it to finally greet you.
You don't know what happened next, only that Marce found you some 100m away from where the cabin was, looking down and showing your left foot on a puddle that looked like the first one, but slightly bigger. She and Lilian dragged you out, foot burning as you now knew it should.
The days after the incident, your uncle grew desperate, the burns grew each day and, though you claimed you were fine to walk,he wouldn't let you go out like this. He repeated that he "wouldn't let you go like he did". (Whomst???? Did????)You told him you wouldn't go anywhere, and he shook his head the next time Neri visited you.
And he did visit you often. Once, he brought another of those creatures that always tried to kill them, it looked transparent-ish and a bit more human than the blue iris lady (he never told you how the visit with the blue irises lady ended, and at this point you didn't want to ask)and told you that he had found where it (he) had come from. The puddles. The plants came from the puddles??and they transformed into creatures and monsters after some time here???? You owed your uncle 20$, but that wasn't important: a whole different world. With plant humans(probably) Only about 5 people you knew knew of it. Your arm and leg burned when you thought about it. There was a different world and when you stuck your hand into the door it burned you-
But that other world didn't know you yet, there was a burning hell to run to wirh your lab equipment on hand, catch these hands and watch upu RUN- but you are still in your bed, tucked in by your uncle like that one time as a kid when you got dengue from a mosquito and your bones frailed and your uncle thought you would die.
Neri asked you if you were alright. You asked him to go with you, go jump in the puddle, together, and see what burned hotter than hell on the other side.
Well.
The weeks after the second incident blurred together. Neri came back every day with more information, and he didn't look into your eyes even once. You'd started to think it would be like this forever, drowning the burning in your veins with his apathy. Until the police took him again for trespassing, and you weren't fast enough to get him out of the spot on time. Your bones frailed (like that one time you got dengue as a child, and you almost wished it had killed you then).
(Neri was to be living in that town for a year or 2, he had told you once. To work and study away from home for a bit before college. Their family wouldn't believe if he called them to bail them out of jail for trespassing, of all things.) Something happened, something inside your arm itched and the burning in your leg felt like it made you stronger, for a minute there.
All you know is the next 3 things:
1) You burned down the station before they could get his I.D and picture.
2)You died from the burns.
3) Somehow, you could still think. And hear. And see.
Your uncle was the first one to visit your grave. He sounded broken, but he said something along the lines of "At least you died here, instead of running away", had he heard you talk to Neri????? He never shared anything about his personal life before your birth, you wished uou had asked with more care and less curiosity. You still burned with the need to know, but there was no way of asking him now. Lilian visited next, and the next time she brought Marcela along.
It was pretty funny, how something resembling hope flickered in your (chest??? You barely had a body now. Soul would have been a better description.) when you heard brilliant, kindhearted Marce yell "HOLY SHIT WAIT HERE" and half an hour later "I HAVE THE OUIJA HOLD ON". It was even funnier when it did work (You said hi to them, and then they left. So also it didn't work, because they didn't come back for a week. Instead, Neri did.)
He looked tired, and a bit off. A burn scar that looked like a handprint hugged his face, fingerprints around his jaw and thumb reaching his mouth. His mouth looked slightly charred as well. If you could still feel dread, you would have dreaded to assume it had been you who did that, but you didn't remember what happened the day you died. It would have been funny if you did. Or at least you’d remember how kissing him felt like.
The frustrating thing was that you couldn't for the life (ha, life) of you understand what they were saying. Also that he brought that one plant boy (who resembled a white chrysanthemum despite the rotten petals, you noticed) with them. And that the plant boy was looking at you. Directly into your eyes. You would have punched him in his plant face if you weren't (probably) a ghost.
He just whispered, as if he were yelling "You can cross now, you have nobody to lose".
With that, Neri just stood still, as if shocked. He sprinted away, terrible at running as always. The plant boy gave you a small salute and you wished you could burn down his roots and rip what was left of the flower stem growing in his head.
Neri never visited you again, and you overheard Marcela telling Lilian that nobody had been able to find him since the night he visited. You knew in your bones, for that was the only part of yourself that hadn't burnt and betrayed you in life, that he had gone into the puddle, and your bone-gut feeling was proved when Marce and Lily came by the next night.
That night was a blur, and you didn't even get to say goodbye to your uncle or that one grey cat that came by for food on Tuesdays. Marcela and Lilian dug and dragged your corpse out from your grave and into the forest. What WERE you meant to do, if not follow them? Once again, you wished you could feel fear, because they were getting awfully close to the spot where that second puddle was.
Down the puddle, you went. You couldn’t bring yourself to reproach them.
After that, everything always burned and you were hungry and empty and humans were scarce in that place, so there was no way to find replacements for the body parts that kept consuming each other without your permission. There were huge deers with sharp teeth and insects like elephants, with plant people either running from you or shooting their magic (magic, magic, 20$, magic)
And then-
(the rest of the story from here is a blur from antheas's pov, since he isn't the main character. He is the second main character and the love interest but calling him the love interest sounds degrading to my ears so i Do Not Do That)
I want to study your brain this is SO COOL I AM SO INVESTED
WHERE did the chrysanthemum guy come from??? Do antheas and neri ever reunite???? Why did Marcela and Lilian drag antheas into the puddle?? Why do the puddles burn??? What actually happened with the blue Iris lady????
I am frothing at the mouth /pos THANK YOU

Fossil Novembirb 1: The Chosen Ones
Neornithes, aka "Modern Birds" (whatever that means), encompasses every living dinosaur today
Not a single other kind of dinosaur managed to make it out of the Mesozoic Era
When you think of the sheer diversity of dinosaurs at the end of the Cretaceous, this is just bizarre - there were almost no Neornithes present whatsoever in the fossil record, but other dinosaurs - from Enantiornithes to Titanosaurs - were actually doing quite well, all things considered. They were everywhere!
So what even were Neornithes back in the Mesozoic?
A handful of extremely rare weirdos, is what they were!
Vegavis, by @thewoodparable
We have four confirmed Neornithes from the Maastrichtian, the last age of the Cretaceous: three duck-like things (Vegavis, Teviornis, "Styginetta") and one chicken-like thing (Asteriornis). Everything else is too fragmentary at this time to determine if they are truly a Neornithine, or just closely related.
Now, the family tree of Neornithes, at least at the base, is very well defined: We know that ratites and tinamou diverged from all other birds first (forming the Palaeognathae group), leaving the rest in Neognathae. We know that Chickens and Ducks ("Fowl") diverged from the rest of birds next, in a group called Galloanserae, leaving the rest of birds in Neoaves.
Which means, theoretically, if there were duck-like and chicken-like things at the very end of the Cretaceous, there should also be:
early Palaeognaths (because if Neognathae exists, so do they)
early Neoavians (because of Galloanserae exists, so do they)
And we've got.... nothing. Nada. Zip.

Asteriornis by @otussketching
And, let's face it: three possible ducks and one possible chicken is not exactly great turn out from the Galloanserans either
This is what we call a "gap" in the Fossil Record - things we know should be there, but just... aren't.
There are many reasons for this - Neornithes have exceptionally delicate bones and don't fossilize well in general (hence the fun we have in the Cenozoic with all the scrappy material); they probably were quite rare as other forms of birdie dinosaurs were having their heyday; and they may have lived in locations where we have not sampled the fossils present particularly well (ie, the "global south")
Which means, yes, the missing fossils may be out there... or maybe not.
What we do know is:
at least one Palaeognath made it through
several duck-like things made it through
at least one chicken-like thing made it through
at least one Neoavian made it through
Teviornis, by @thewoodparable
In fact, "Styginetta" and Teviornis are, possibly, early members of the weird Presbyornithid group - a group of duck-like birds that lived as waders, leading to them being affectionately named "Flamingo-Ducks". This group was exceptionally common in the early Cenozoic, and lasted through the Miocene - and it first appeared in the Cretaceous!
Ducks are true apocalypse survivors - multiple groups of them crawled through to the other side!
These animals were, in every way, "modern-type" birds - no teeth in the beak, shortened tail bones, powerful wings for flight. But they were far removed from modern ducks and chickens, lacking many of their key features.
Such a small, seemingly insignificant group... and only they managed to survive. Wild stuff!

What makes a good review, in your opinion? And, related to your earlier post... whose reviews are you reading as inspiration/motivation? Do you have favourite literary magazine or essay collections with this type of writing? Thank you :)
probably not clear from the context, but I was talking about my diss, which is a literature review in the field of strategy and management so this is v specific (and i'd wager not what you intended? but i might be wrong, so here's my answer anyway)
what makes a good review is (1) interesting topic in actual need of a lit review* (2) comprehensive sample selection (3) new insight being generated (i.e. making a conceptual contribution + bringing attention to a different way of looking at things) and tangible new avenues of research proposed (i.e. including possible research questions and methodology). essentially, something that will reinvigorate the field by generating new interest & act as a reference for getting a good overview of it
I do have resources! again v specific to my field (so for example, these would not apply for lit reviews in the field of medicine which are v v different)
this article on integrative reviews (that's what I'm doing specifically, as opposed to a systematic review) these two articles on sample selection (1 + 2) this CBS course has a good reading list
++ for finding exemplars: International Journal of Management Reviews (IJMR) & AOM Annals are *chef's kiss*
* as a PhD student (in Europe at least), it's normal to have as part of the final dissertation one paper that's a lit review. this is great and it shows you know what you're talking about AND it serves the purpose of allowing you to learn about the topic itself. however, it doesn't mean that there is a need for a lit review outside of your diss/to be published. so for example, I fully expect to do a lit review at the beginning of my PhD but the point is that it will be helpful for me, I don't expect it to be helpful for others (i.e. it will not bring new contributions most likely

I'm about halfway through my History BA and I have a question (I pinky promise I'm doing more research than just asking tumblr academics their opinions), but this is also me assuming you did college in both the US and the UK so forgive me if I guessed wrong and am confusing you with someone else. How does graduate school in either country compare? I'm still stuck between whether I want to go for my master's or straight to PhD so obviously I'm quite a ways away from making any important decision, but considering that I'm studying British history (primarily), it felt natural to consider getting my degree(s) abroad. Are there like, any major differences you're aware of that made university vastly different, or are they more similar than I'm thinking?? Was one situation flat out preferable to the other?? If you even have strong opinions about it at all
That is me, yes. BA in the US with one year in the UK; MA in the US; PhD in the UK; now the co-director of a US MA/PhD program, so I have an appreciable amount of experience with graduate and postgraduate education in both countries. Here are the main ways in which they compare/what the experience is like in both:
In the UK overall, the experience is much more self-directed. I only had taught coursework for the first year of the PhD; the rest of it was spent in research and writing. So compared to the American system, where you take 3 years of coursework first (such as the PhD program that I currently manage) and then write the dissertation in the last year or two (hence the designation ABD, or All But Dissertation), you're thrown into the deep end from the start. I didn't have comprehensive exams, which might be a plus if that's something you have anxiety about, but the tradeoff was that I had to complete the dissertation proposal and first full-length sample chapter in the very first year, rather than waiting for year 3, and to have that be the basis on which I was evaluated/approved to continue to the full PhD degree. If you know what you want to work on and have solid supervision, this can work out and it certainly allows you to develop your topic in depth from the start, but if this is the kind of thing that gives you heart palpitations, there is that. The bright side is that you will come out with a thesis that will need less revision to be suitable as a monograph, because you've done a higher and longer amount of work upfront. I.e. I published my PhD thesis as a monograph with a major academic press within a year of graduating, which is generally rare in the US system.
As such, the US PhD experience is overall more directed/structured and leans toward more coursework than research. The research is obviously a big part of it in a way that American undergrads rarely train in (unless they go to a fancy liberal arts writing-intensive school for undergraduate, like I did), but as noted, the dissertation is central in the UK PhD system in a way it isn't (or at least not as much) in the American system. You have pros and cons for both systems, and sometimes I wished that my intensively research-centric PhD, where it was all on me to do the research, write the research, and have something to present to my supervisors on schedule for each meeting, had more taught coursework or formal/structured contact time. You have a committee in the American system, i.e. three or four academics who will oversee your defense, whereas in the UK, at least in a history program, you only have two aside from your degree supervisor: an internal reader (within the institution) and external reader (from outside the institution). While this means fewer people whose approval you need to wrangle, my viva (final defense) ended up being a Goddamn Ordeal because my external reader, despite being a friend of my supervisor, was really not suited to read a dissertation on the subject and I don't think should have been picked for it, then was extremely unprofessional about her notes/reviews/suggestions. (My supervisor likewise apologized to me for that, so yeah, It Was Bad. Academic Trauma Ahoy.)
Master's programs in the UK are also incredibly intense; they are generally one year compared to the usual two years for most US programs, and you have to complete the coursework AND write a thesis in that time, which is not something that I really recommend for maximum sanity. (Then again, if you're getting an advanced degree in history, that might be out the window.) However, if you are working on British history, then yeah, it makes the most sense to be based in a UK university, since the archives that you will need to consult will be, obviously, far easier to access than if you need to try to cram it all into one overseas academic research trip on a postgraduate student's budget. In that case, it might make sense to just apply to a master's/PhD program in the UK upfront, to smooth the transition/amount of moving around/financial misery you will have to endure. However, word to the wise that there WILL be financial misery, especially as an international student at a UK university. The Tories have yet again jacked the visa and NHS application fees (which you will have to pay upfront for every year you intend to be there) through the roof; your tuition will be much higher (though as noted in previous asks, don't go anywhere unless they pay YOU to do it) and it is difficult to get any part-time work outside of teaching or other opportunities directly related to your degree, which are subject to the uh, totally great pay rate for junior academics. (Sarcasm. That was sarcasm.)
Basically, yeah: it depends on what kind of student you are, how much initiative you like to take, how much structure you need or don't need, what sources you anticipate needing to consult and how you're going to do that, if you're comfortable starting the dissertation right away and being ready to present a finished chapter at the end of year 1, and whether you want your graduate/postgraduate experience to focus primarily on independent research or taught courses. There are no exactly right answers to these questions and you will obviously have to think about what suits you best (along, of course, the money aspect). Good luck!

How did you manage to get accepted grad school fully funded? Where will you be staying?
I only applied for universities that fully funded MAs. they usually state that on their website under either tuition or funding section. I made sure my personal statement as well as my writing sample was polished and clear (ambiguity is one of my main issues) and got recommendation letters from my profs. my personal statement reflected what I wrote about on my senior dissertation, which era/field I wanted to focus on, how I could potentially work with the profs at that uni, etc. My GPA is also decent and I think all things combined, I landed the perfect spot!
accommodation varies from state to state but I'll be staying in a furnished apartment this year.

Time Management Tips for Students
Time management is super important during university. It’s tough for many students, but it's a skill you've gotta nail.
Between going to class, prepping for exams, keeping up with friends, and finding time to chill, it's easy to feel overwhelmed.
We've got a dissertation example that dives into how handling stress and managing time is key for master’s students.
Here are some basic tips for managing your time:

PLAN YOUR TIME
Take some time to plan things out. Planning helps you avoid repeating stuff and wasting time. Making a list of what you need to find out before diving into research is smart. It helps keep you on track.
PRIORITIZE
Make a to-do list and put the most important stuff at the top. This way, you focus on what really matters. Tools like the Eisenhower Matrix can help you figure out what's urgent and what can wait.
SET REALISTIC GOALS
Sometimes things don’t go as planned, and that's okay. Be patient with yourself. When you make your to-do list, keep it real. Factor in extra time, especially if you're not sure how long things will take.
ALLOT TIME
Set aside specific times for studying or doing hobbies. Stick to your schedule even if you'd rather do something else. This helps you stay focused and get things done.
BREAK IT DOWN
Big tasks can feel overwhelming. Break them into smaller, manageable ones with deadlines. For example, if you're writing a dissertation, split it into chunks like data collection or writing the intro.
TAKE BREAKS
Taking breaks actually boosts productivity. Stretch, switch tasks, or take a short walk. The Pomodoro Technique is a cool way to work for short bursts and then take breaks.
MAKE TIME FOR YOU
Don't forget to take care of yourself. Schedule time for things you enjoy, like yoga or hanging out with friends. It's important to balance work and fun.
In Conclusion
Time management is key for academic success. Balancing school, social life, and self-care is vital. Planning, prioritizing, and taking breaks help reduce stress and increase productivity. By managing time effectively, you can get stuff done and still have time for yourself.

And if they get it published in a well regarded journal it can ruin some poor fuckers degree.
It’s me, I’m fuckers. And I’m not nearly the only one. A lot of failed research projects never know why, but for a grad student it is easily (academic) career ending. I got lucky in that sense, that I later found out it wasn’t me, it was the methods.
I hate that the pressure to pass and the pressure to publish is making this a much more common occurrence. I love that science is progressing to the “we all have very specific niches” stage but it (and a ton of other things) can make proper peer review very difficult. Not Every dissertation should have publishable work!! We have to let science find failure points too and a lot more often than Universities are doing in the last 30 years. I’m guessing I’m preaching to the choir here? Ah well, my mind grabbed on to this reblog and wouldn’t let go. It feels good to get it said.

And don’t get me started on what passes for “research” and trial “success” outside of academia.
PS- if you’ve gone through this recently or are going through this or similar, I hope it helps to know that not being able to get that degree works out fine (and I have a sample size of 5 now, you are not alone!!) I am very happy with my Masters and able to have a very fulfilling career. I think in some ways I’m doing more good because I can be that much more flexible and I’m fully capable of communicating well with laypeople and academics in my fields. Fields! More than one! You can be a bit of a generalist out of academia and that suits this ADHD addled brain very well. My other unfinished friends are all making better money than they did or would have made in academia as well and finding similar personal satisfaction. It took us all a bit of a wobble to get repositioned to use our knowledge differently than expected but we all managed it.
Scientific fraud is the most baffling thing ever to me like do they think they're just going to make a huge breakthrough and no one will notice that it's fake by trying to replicate their results
#academia#science#all but dissertation#bad science#bad scientists#i hate not having my PhD but my prof would be penalized towards his tenure track if I was allowed to continue with the lack of progress#10 years later a plant physiologist held me while I cried#after telling me that measuring that enzyme was nearly impossible#he and his students were one of the only labs in the world able to reliably do it and replicate the results

Research Opportunities & Student Media Initiatives at Delhi's Premier BJMC Colleges

While a robust curriculum and excellent faculty are cornerstones of quality education, the true mark of Delhi's premier BJMC colleges in Delhi often lies in what they offer beyond academics. For aspiring media professionals, a truly enriching educational experience extends into avenues for independent research, student-led media ventures, and platforms for creative expression. These "beyond academics" opportunities are crucial for fostering innovation, developing critical thinking, and providing invaluable real-world experience that sets graduates apart in a competitive industry.
Delhi's leading institutions understand that to cultivate well-rounded, proactive, and industry-ready professionals, students need platforms to experiment, innovate, and apply their learning outside the confines of formal coursework. This environment encourages a culture of inquiry, self-starting, and practical skill development that is highly valued by employers.
The Importance of "Beyond Academics" in Media Education:
Practical Application & Skill Enhancement: Student media initiatives, like campus newspapers or web channels, provide a live laboratory for applying classroom theory to real-world scenarios. This enhances reporting, editing, production, and content management skills.
Portfolio Building: These initiatives offer tangible work samples that are invaluable for a student's portfolio, a critical component when applying for internships and jobs.
Critical Thinking & Problem Solving: Independent research projects encourage students to delve deep into media phenomena, analyze trends, and propose solutions to contemporary communication challenges.
Networking & Leadership: Managing student media bodies or participating in research teams hones leadership, teamwork, and networking skills, preparing students for collaborative professional environments.
Industry Relevance: Engaging with current media trends through research or creating content for student platforms keeps students updated and their work relevant to industry demands.
Personal Growth & Creativity: These avenues provide spaces for students to explore their passions, take creative risks, and develop a strong sense of ownership over their work.
Research Opportunities at Delhi's Premier BJMC Colleges:
Delhi's premier BJMC colleges in Delhi are increasingly emphasizing research, even at the undergraduate level. This isn't about traditional scientific research, but about media studies research that can inform practice and understanding.
Undergraduate Research Projects/Dissertations: Many colleges include a mandatory dissertation or research project in the final year. This involves:
Topic Selection: Students choose a media-related topic (e.g., impact of social media on news consumption, portrayal of gender in advertising, ethics of AI in journalism).
Methodology: Learning qualitative (interviews, focus groups, content analysis) and quantitative (surveys, data analysis) research methods.
Data Collection & Analysis: Applying learned methods to gather and interpret data.
Report Writing: Presenting findings in a structured academic paper.
Faculty-Led Research Initiatives: Some colleges involve students in ongoing faculty research projects, offering invaluable mentorship and exposure to advanced research methodologies.
Media Observatories & Think Tanks: A few leading institutions might have dedicated media observatories or research cells that regularly publish reports on media trends, inviting student contributions.
Conferences & Seminars: Students are encouraged to attend, and sometimes even present papers at, academic conferences or internal college seminars focused on media studies research.
Student Media Initiatives: The Live Laboratories:
These initiatives are where theory transforms into practical expertise. Delhi's premier BJMC colleges in Delhi typically boast a vibrant array of student-run media platforms:
Campus Newspapers/Magazines: Students take on roles as reporters, editors, photographers, graphic designers, and layout artists, producing print or digital publications covering campus news, features, and relevant social issues. This simulates a real newsroom environment.
Web Radio/Podcasting Stations: Students learn the entire process of audio content creation – from scripting and voice modulation to recording, editing, and broadcasting/publishing podcasts. This offers hands-on experience in audio production and sound design.
Campus TV/Web Channels: Equipped with studios and cameras, students produce news bulletins, talk shows, documentaries, and short films. They rotate roles as anchors, reporters, camera operators, editors, and directors, gaining comprehensive video production experience.
Photography Clubs: These clubs organize photo walks, workshops, exhibitions, and cover college events. They help students develop their visual storytelling skills, composition, and photo editing expertise.
Film Making & Documentary Clubs: Dedicated to cinematic storytelling, these clubs allow students to work on short films, documentaries, and music videos, honing their scriptwriting, direction, cinematography, and post-production skills.
Social Media & Digital Content Teams: Many colleges have student teams managing their official social media handles, creating engaging digital content, and running campaigns. This provides practical experience in social media management, content strategy, and digital marketing.
Debate and Literary Societies: While not strictly "media," these societies are crucial for honing public speaking, critical thinking, argumentation, and communication skills, which are foundational for journalism and mass communication.
Notable Examples and Their Approaches (Illustrative):
IAAN School of Mass Communication: With its strong emphasis on practical training and industry-ready graduates (as an associated study center of MCRPV), IAAN consistently encourages students to take part in various production activities from their very first year. Their well-equipped studios serve as real-time labs for students to create news bulletins, short films, and digital content, fostering a culture of continuous practical output.
GGSIPU Affiliates (VIPS, JIMS, DME): These colleges often have active media labs that facilitate student-run campus media, departmental magazines, and digital content creation cells. They frequently organize intra-college media fests and competitions that encourage practical application of skills learned.
Amity University: With its vast resources, Amity supports numerous student clubs and societies across various media disciplines, often providing dedicated spaces and mentors for their initiatives. Their research focus extends to encouraging students to participate in minor research projects.
Maximizing Your "Beyond Academics" Opportunities:
To truly leverage these avenues at Delhi's premier BJMC colleges in Delhi:

What are the best thesis writing services?
Let’s be honest—writing a thesis can feel like you’re carrying the weight of the world. Between research, writing, citations, formatting, and deadlines, it’s easy to feel lost or overwhelmed. That’s exactly why thesis writing services exist—to take some of that pressure off your shoulders and help you submit something that you’re actually proud of.
But not all services are created equal.
Some promise the moon and deliver recycled content. Others overcharge and ghost you when you ask for revisions. So how do you find a thesis writing service that’s actually worth your time and money?
Let’s break it down.
🥇 The Ones That Actually Deliver
You want real academic support—not just a writer who rephrases Wikipedia. That’s why services built by subject experts and academic professionals stand out. They know what your university expects and they’ve helped hundreds of students just like you.
Let’s talk about three of them.
1. All Homework Assignments
Imagine having someone who helps you pick the right topic, guides you through your literature review, runs your data analysis, and even formats your document the way your university wants it. That’s what All Homework Assignments is all about.
It’s best for students in management, nursing, education, psychology, and general academic fields. And yes, they’re super responsive—WhatsApp support is available 24/7, so you’re never left hanging.

2. Programming Online Help
Now, if your thesis involves coding, simulations, or anything technical, this is your go-to team.
Whether you’re working on a machine learning model in Python, building a Java-based project, or writing a CS dissertation, they’ve got the technical and academic skills to bring your vision to life. They don’t just help you write the thesis—they help you build it too.
3. Statistic Homework Tutors
Doing a thesis that’s heavy on numbers? Maybe you're analyzing survey results, running regressions, or testing hypotheses. That’s where Statistic Homework Tutors shine.
From SPSS to STATA to R, they handle the stats side so you don’t have to sweat over it. Great for students in economics, public health, finance, psychology, and other research-focused areas.
🚀 Why These Services Stand Out
Here’s what sets them apart from the random “write my thesis in 24 hours” sites you see floating around:
You work with real academic experts
Your work is 100% plagiarism-free
You get help tailored to your specific subject and topic
You can ask for revisions (without being ghosted)
And most importantly—you’re not treated like just another order
They’re not the cheapest in the world, but they’re student-budget friendly, and what you get in return is actual peace of mind.
⚠️ Quick Tip Before You Choose Any Service
Ask these three questions:
Will I be able to communicate directly with the writer?
Can I see samples or get updates along the way?
What’s the policy on revisions or refunds?
If the answer is “yes” to all three, you’re probably in good hands.
🎯 Final Thought: Your Thesis Deserves the Best
You’ve worked hard to get this far in your academic journey. Don’t let a rushed or subpar thesis hold you back. Whether you're short on time, stuck on stats, or just need help getting organized, these services are here to back you up—not just complete an order.
So breathe easy. Support is out there—and it’s better than you think.

Top Tips for Successful Master's Dissertation Writing
A master’s dissertation is more than just a long academic paper—it’s a journey that tests your critical thinking, research, and writing skills. It is often the most challenging and rewarding part of postgraduate study. Whether you’re just beginning or already stuck in the middle of your writing process, the following tips can help you successfully write your master’s dissertation and submit it with confidence.
1. Understand the Purpose and Structure
Before you dive into writing, it’s crucial to understand what a dissertation is meant to achieve. It typically involves independent research on a topic of your choice, demonstrating your understanding of theoretical concepts and research methods in your field.
A typical dissertation structure includes:
Title Page
Abstract
Acknowledgements
Table of Contents
Introduction
Literature Review
Methodology
Results/Findings
Discussion
Conclusion
References
Appendices (if any)
Knowing this structure early helps you stay organized and ensures no essential component is overlooked.
2. Choose the Right Topic
Your topic will define your entire dissertation journey. Choose a topic that is:
Relevant to your field of study.
Interesting enough to keep you engaged for months.
Manageable in terms of scope and data availability.
Researchable using existing methods or resources.
Original, yet grounded in existing research.
Discuss your ideas with your supervisor and refine your topic until it’s sharp and feasible.
3. Develop a Clear Research Question
Your research question is the core of your dissertation. It guides your study and keeps your work focused. A strong research question is:
Clear and concise.
Neither too broad nor too narrow.
Answerable through analysis, research, or experimentation.
Example: "How has remote working affected employee productivity in the IT industry post-COVID-19?"
Your research should revolve around answering this question comprehensively.
4. Create a Solid Proposal
Most programs require a dissertation proposal before full approval. This outlines what you plan to research, why it matters, and how you’ll conduct the study. A well-written proposal will:
Show you’ve done initial background research.
Highlight gaps in the current literature.
Outline your objectives, hypotheses, and methods.
Set a timeline for the work.
Getting your proposal right saves you from major issues later in the process.
5. Plan Your Time Effectively
Time management is key. Break your work into smaller tasks with deadlines. Use a Gantt chart or project timeline to allocate time for:
Research and reading.
Data collection and analysis.
Writing each chapter.
Revisions and proofreading.
Start early. The closer you get to the deadline, the more stressful even small tasks can feel.
6. Conduct Thorough Research
Use a variety of credible academic sources including journals, books, official reports, and databases like JSTOR or Google Scholar. Make sure to:
Take notes while reading.
Keep track of citations using tools like Zotero, Mendeley, or EndNote.
Organize your sources by themes or relevance.
A strong literature review sets the foundation for your research and shows your depth of understanding.
7. Be Methodologically Sound
Your methodology section explains how you conducted your research. Be clear, specific, and justify your choices. Include:
Research approach (qualitative, quantitative, or mixed).
Data collection methods (surveys, interviews, experiments, etc.).
Sampling techniques.
Ethical considerations.
Your methodology should be replicable, meaning another researcher could follow your method and arrive at similar results.
8. Write with Clarity and Consistency
When it comes to writing:
Follow a consistent academic tone.
Avoid jargon unless necessary, and define technical terms.
Start each chapter with an introduction and end with a summary.
Make sure each part flows logically into the next.
If possible, write daily or regularly, even in small chunks. Consistent writing helps reduce last-minute panic.
9. Revise and Edit Thoroughly
Once your first draft is complete, don’t rush to submit it. Revisions are where real improvement happens. Focus on:
Content: Are arguments strong and supported?
Structure: Is the flow logical?
Language: Are grammar and spelling correct?
Formatting: Is your document consistent and professional?
Use editing tools like Grammarly, and seek feedback from your supervisor or peers.
10. Reference Properly
Proper referencing shows academic integrity and avoids plagiarism. Always:
Follow the required citation style (APA, MLA, Harvard, etc.).
Cite every source you use.
Include a complete bibliography.
Use referencing tools, but double-check formatting to avoid automated errors.
11. Stay in Touch with Your Supervisor
Your dissertation supervisor is there to guide you—don’t hesitate to ask questions. Keep them updated on your progress and meet deadlines for review and feedback. Their advice can save you from costly mistakes.
12. Take Care of Yourself
Dissertation writing can be mentally exhausting. To avoid burnout:
Take breaks and follow a healthy routine.
Sleep well, eat healthy, and exercise regularly.
Don’t isolate—talk to peers or mentors for support.
Celebrate small milestones to stay motivated.
Your mental and physical well-being will impact your writing quality more than you think.
Conclusion
Writing a master’s dissertation is no small feat. It takes planning, patience, and persistence. By choosing the right topic, managing your time, and writing clearly, you can create a dissertation that not only meets academic standards but also gives you a sense of accomplishment.
Remember, it's a journey of learning and growth. Stay focused, be adaptable, and don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it. You've got this!

The consequences of crimes committed within the society bear impact on the entire society. These consequences range from medical costs to loss of income due to disabilities that may arise from the act. Some of these consequences last for a lifetime, thus increasing costs of living for the victim as well as the members of the community. It is from this background that there is a dire need of coming up with a program aimed at countering recidivism within society. By consulting highly scholarly material, this literature review is carried out to study the effect of treatment programs aimed at reducing recidivism. Literature Review Redondo-Illescas et al. (2001) seek to underscore the fact that treatment programs based on cognitive-behavioral models are the most effective in treatment programs aimed at reducing recidivism. This study is critical since it aims at evaluating the authenticity of different models used in treatment programs, with a view of establishing the best model that should be adopted to reduce recidivism within the community. Redondo-Illescas et al. (2001) have dismissed the authenticity of plausible theoretical models in reducing recidivism, citing the poor outcome of the programs. The author presents interesting findings as they affirm that the cognitive-behavioral model is more effective on high-risk offenders, as compared to low-risk offenders, and is thus able to influence behavioral change that would result in peaceful coexistence between the offenders and the community. These findings, however, are not consistent with the past literature, perhaps because they are based on small sample size. Parent (2004) describes how the National Institute of Correction (NIC) carries out a transition process of inmates as they return to the community. This study is critical since it evaluates the needs assessment of this population, with a view of coming up with essential resources. The program aims at enhancing an accountability plan for the transition program within the community services. Thus, Parent (2004) describes how the program uses the Transition from Prison to Community Initiative (TPCI) model to not only provide special needs to the offenders but also provide fundamentals associated with the transition process. Taxman et al. (2007) investigate the level of substance abuse as well as risks emanating from recidivism by using assessment tools. This study is critical since it helps to assess the placement of the offenders to their relevant treatment centers in order for them to acquire the best out of the community programs. Taxman et al. (2007) have clarified that an inappropriate match of the treatment programs with the offenders only yields unsubstantial results. However, even though the study quantitatively revealed that the standardized screening tool is more viable than the actuarial risk tool, the findings are compounded with one main challenge: some aspects within the program need specialized tools, as some tools cannot address the level of treatment required by the offender. Solomon et al. (2008) highlight the rationale behind using standardized risk assessment tools that help to identify factors contributing to recidivism, including dysfunctional family, poor self-image, and drug abuse, among others. This study is critical since it tries to identify the needs of the offenders before being subjected to any kind of community treatment. The program aims at achieving its objective through a number of strategies, including contingency management and cognitive processing, to facilitate new behavioral development. Moreover, the findings for this program are credible as they show that more emphasis should be put on reward systems, rather than sanctions, in order to induce behavioral change within the community service programs. Through his dissertation, Layton-MacKenzie (2008) investigates the efficacy of education programs in reducing recidivism within the community. This investigation is critical because it assesses the impact of offenders’ education after they get out of the correctional facility, with a view of preparing them for job skills that would prevent them from being entrenched in criminal activities. As such, the program aims to reduce recidivism through vocational education that facilitates job employment, thus adding value to the entire community. However, Layton-MacKenzie (2008) raises questions on the effectiveness of the education program on taking a job that would help the offender turn away from recidivism. Another study carried out by Kolbasovsky & Reich & Meyerkopf (2010) reveals that the Intensive care management (ICM) program can significantly reduce the cost implications of psychiatric recidivism amongst elderly people. This study is critical since it addresses the intimidating incidents that were experienced by this age group before the introduction of the ICM program. Though the program targets the old people, it advocates for a program that does not only reduce the cost of crime to the entire community but also liberates the lives of psychiatric patients from substance abuse. The authors have demonstrated the effectiveness of the program, citing financial savings emanating from the ICM program. The authors have also advocated this program to health plans that aim at reducing costs associated with psychiatrist recidivism. Asscher et al. (2011) aim to discover the correlation between delinquency and the child’s psychopathic traits through a meta-analysis study. This study is critical in this subject because it offers a clear understanding of the crimes committed by children, and this facilitates the formulation of an effective program aimed at countering recidivism. The authors demonstrate how treatment programs are able to reduce the level of crime within the society using evidence from quantitative design consisting of a large sample size , which creates room for the generalization of findings. Through this study, the policy aims at changing the manner in which society perceives psychopathy. Thus, Asscher et al. (2011) are on point by recommending that children should be engaged in treatment programs aimed at reducing psychopathy in order to reduce the level of crime within the society. Frantzen, San-Miguel, & Dae-Hoon (2011) seek to evaluate the effect of Protecting Order (PO) violation charges in regards to domestic violence by establishing the rate at which it reduces recidivism rate. This study is critical since it seeks to inform that the rate of recidivism cannot be reduced by PO charges, as they are unaccompanied by effective rehabilitation programs aimed at eradicating recidivism. The authors have put their point across, claiming that there is no difference between the charged and the released persons with regard to recidivism in domestic violence. Their findings are based on a credible source , and the reliability of their findings is ascertained by a cross-comparison of studies carried out in the past. Wakeling et al. (2011) have engaged themselves in an investigation aimed at establishing the efficacy of prognostic modeling, with a view of establishing whether the individual static items are able to predict sexual recidivism in a more effective way than the Risk assessment Matrix 2000. This study is critical since it helps to evaluate the most effective ways of analyzing sexual recidivism, thus helping to create community programs that are congruent with the characteristics of the offenders. The authors have pointed out that collecting information relative to sexual recidivism can be achieved effectively through individual static items, as opposed to Risk Matrix 2000 predicators. However, the findings are inconsistent, as the pre and post-treatment were not considered as part of the model in assessing the variables of sexual recidivism. Spjeldnes et al. (2012) have addressed the rate of recidivism by establishing whether it correlates with positive social support from the members of the family. This study is critical since it helps to establish the relationship that should be adopted by families while dealing with offenders. Through a longitudinal study, the program has addressed the issue of discrimination against offenders from a minority group in the United States. Spjeldnes et al. (2012) have ascertained that increased recidivism amongst the minority group in the United States can only be eliminated if the family members adopt a positive approach towards the offenders. The authors have presented the findings through quantitative data consisting of large sample size, thus creating room for generalization of the findings. Conclusion This literature review uses scholarly material to demonstrate that the rate of recidivism within the community can be reduced by adopting treatment programs aimed at countering the vice. The literature has laid down facts from studies investigating the programs and identified the program that provides support to the offender through family members and programs based on the cognitive-behavioral change as the most viable in the development of the policy. However, I would recommend a further study that investigates whether job skills are more effective programs than education skills in reducing recidivism amongst the youth who dropped out of school due to criminal offenses. Writing a dissertation is a critical academic milestone, but it can be a daunting and time-consuming task. Many students in the UK struggle with tight deadlines, complex topics, and the pressure to meet high academic standards. This is why Cheap Dissertation Writing services have become a popular solution. But is affordability synonymous with low quality? This blog explores why choosing online cheap dissertation writing in the UK can be a practical and cost-effective choice.
The Growing Demand for Dissertation Writing Services
Academic pressures and the need for expert assistance have led to a surge in demand for dissertation writing services. According to a 2023 survey by the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI), over 30% of UK students admitted to seeking academic support to complete their dissertations. With tuition fees rising and part-time jobs consuming students' time, many look for budget-friendly dissertation writing services to ease their workload.
Benefits of Choosing Cheap Dissertation Writing Services
Many assume that lower-cost dissertation writing services lack quality, but this isn’t necessarily true. Here are some key benefits of opting for affordable services:
1. Cost-Effective Academic Support
Students often operate on tight budgets, making expensive writing services inaccessible. Affordable services allow students to get expert help without breaking the bank.
2. Professional Guidance at a Low Cost
Reliable cheap dissertation writing services employ experienced writers who understand UK academic standards, ensuring well-researched and structured papers.
3. Saves Time and Reduces Stress
Managing research, coursework, and personal commitments can be overwhelming. Hiring professional assistance allows students to focus on other priorities while ensuring their dissertations are completed on time.
4. Customised Assistance
Many affordable services offer tailored dissertation help, allowing students to pay only for the specific sections they need assistance with, rather than the entire dissertation.
Quality vs. Affordability: Striking the Right Balance
While affordability is a major factor, quality should never be compromised. Here’s how students can ensure they get the best of both worlds:
Check Reviews and Testimonials: Look for genuine feedback from past customers.
Evaluate Writer Credentials: Ensure the service employs qualified writers with expertise in your subject area.
Plagiarism-Free Guarantee: Reliable services provide original content with plagiarism reports.
Transparent Pricing: Hidden charges are a red flag. A trustworthy service offers clear pricing models.
Customer Support Availability: 24/7 customer support ensures students can get assistance whenever needed.
How to Identify Reliable Cheap Dissertation Writing Services
The UK market is flooded with dissertation writing services, but not all of them are trustworthy. Here are some tips to identify a reliable yet affordable service:
