So you know how sometimes you do something as a kid or a teenager and you think it's totally normal and then the memory pops into your head as an adult and it suddenly recontextualizes the whole thing? Anyway shout out to my super nice high school math teacher, who also had the misfortune of being A. the first teacher to give me a syllabus that (crucially) included point totals and how grades were calculated B. scored tests as like 75% of the grade and C. allowed us to take tests as a group All those factors combined into two incidents that, in retrospect, he was in no way expecting to deal with but teenage me thought were totally normal (behind a read more because it got long)
The first was when I stopped doing math homework not long into the school year and he stopped me after class to (very kindly, very gently) ask me if I was okay and if everything was okay at home, because I'd stopped doing my homework but he knew I knew the material. I said "I stopped doing the homework because I crossed the threshold on the point totals on the rubric where I no longer need to turn in any homework to get an A." He paused, kinda blinked at me, and said "That only works if you get 100% on every test" I kind of stared back at him in blank incomprehension, and was like "Yes????" "What happens if you don't get 100% on a test?" "Well. I do get 100% on every test, but if I ever miss a question, you offer extra credit questions on every test" He didn't know what to say to that lol The other time was when he announced future tests would be allowed to be worked on in groups of three or four, and I walked up to him after class and said "Any group I am in will be getting 100% on the tests. That is unfair to the other groups, and unfair to the people in my group, who will not get a chance to test their skills because I am not risking my grade on their math abilities. Can I take the tests solo?" Again, teenage me thought this was a perfectly normal, logical thing to do, but looking back as an adult like oh my gosh there is no way my poor math teacher was expecting to have to deal with that. He did let me take math tests solo I tried the "calculate points then stop doing the homework" thing in my English class the next year and it did not work because that teacher had an "extra credit doesn't count if you haven't done all your assignments" policy :(
#the person behind the yarn#my secret is out a was a math person in school#it's not a secret lol I've offered to help people with math homework here before#but yeah! in school I did not consider myself creative at all and was all about math and science#but especially math! all my math teachers pretty much since math class started being a separate class#very quickly just moved me to the back of the class and let me read through class#except when other kids needed help learning math#and I would tutor them? idk it worked#I gave off such intense goody two shoes energy in school that I got away with a LOT#the english extra credit thing is pretty much the only thing I did not get away with in school#but that's a different story lol

I’m definitely going to write a college AU fanfic where Yuuta is the campus star—top of the physics department, president of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club, and absolutely everyone’s favorite. He’s also been the object of Toge’s unspoken crush for the past two years. Toge, a plant science major, only had one class with Yuuta three semesters ago—calculus, which he barely passed. Ever since then, he’s been hopelessly stuck on Yuuta, but despite all the relentless teasing from Kirara and Hakari, he still refuses to confess.
Megumi asked Yuuta to check on his biology project in the greenhouse, so he went to do a quick favor. But as soon as Yuuta stepped inside, he accidentally knocked over a few pots. Turns out, those pots belonged to the cute plant science nerd who just stared at him while he fumbled over a million apologies. When the guy didn’t respond and kept silently watching him, Yuuta panicked and bolted, realizing he’d probably just made an enemy of the entire greenhouse—and the adorable plant nerd who basically lived in it.
He ends up venting about the whole thing to Hakari during one of their math classes. Hakari bursts out laughing and says, “Dude, that’s Toge, kirara’s friend. He’s mute.” Yuuta’s face flushes with embarrassment, and he feels like even more of an asshole for running off like that without realizing.
#inuokko#ottoge#inumaki toge#yuta okkotsu#okkotsu yuuta#toge as a plant science major because I haven’t seen that once#if anyone is curious hakari is a math major and kirara is astrology <3#toge met Kirara in calculus too and they were tutored by hakari#Megumi is pre-veterinarian

College
This semester my daughter has a basic chemistry class. We had a long video call this evening where I stepped her painfully through the fist couple of problems in her homework. She has dyscalculia, and just cannot math for love-nor-money. I can tutor the math (oh. boy. can I tutor math.), but when we got to the problem with "significant figures" we were both about ready to cry. Something about do-you-count-the-zeros-or-not is just very, very counterintuitive to me. I'm sure if I worked with it regularly, it would eventually sink in. However, I only end up needing this set of rules about once every year or two. It just will not stick with me.
It's going to be. A fun semester. However, I can at least be grateful for video calls and my little whiteboard, which lets me be at least a halfway decent tutor. Density equals mass divided by volume. It is definitely going to go downhill from here.

darcy lewis sits on your lap just to review her mathematical proofs and theorems, and when you ask her why she just goes,
“because the principles of thermal conduction makes my brain work better,” mumbling about said partial differential equation under her breath.
when you look at her puzzled, she stops the frantic pace of her pencil to hold your face in her hands.
“you equal hot. darcy equal cold. brain no work when darcy cold. you plus me, equals equilibrium. it’s simple science really, well if you disregard the heat lost in the environment and how different materials absorb heat—you know what i mean!”
you chuckle at her response and plant a soft kiss on her nose.
you love your doctor in astrophysics, especially when she’s cuddled up in your lap rambling about math.
#darcy lewis x reader#darcy lewis imagine#darcy lewis#i love her#i dont want to do my differential equations practice exams#if darcy was real id want her to tutor while she sits on me#i dont think we’d get anything done tho#marvel imagines#marvel wlw#darcy thinks about math way too much#she cant wait to watch oppenheimer with you#darcy cant pick between her love for science or you

If you're good at math:
1. Concept Integration:
Find sums which require in-depth knowledge of more than one mathematical concept to solve. A simple example would be using algebraic expressions as sides of a right angled triangle and finding hypotenuse using Pythagoras theorem and then finding the square root of the polynomial by factorization.
2. Proofs:
Practice writing and understanding mathematical proofs. This helps you develop logical reasoning skills and a deeper understanding of the foundational principles behind mathematical concepts. Very Very important even if it is excluded in the syllabus.
3. Explore Multiple Methods: A continuation of the previous tip; when you learn derivations, you can find short-cuts that work out for you. Or you can explore other methods of solving like graphing two simultaneous linear equations to solve, etc
4. Marry a whiteboard: Seriously, it's so much fun to solve questions on whiteboard. Also, Feynman technique (it's basic so not preaching)
5. Give Olympiads:
Don’t shy away from tackling advanced topics or materials beyond your current coursework. Give Olympiads. They broaden your thinking capacity, and they're reallyyyyyy fun to prepapre for ✨
6. Develop Intuition:
Work on developing mathematical intuition. This involves recognizing patterns, making educated guesses, and estimating solutions before rigorously solving problems. Cannot stress enough on this point. I got a guess correct. It was fill in the integer type questions and the probability of getting an answer right if picked at random was 1/100. Still, went with my gut instict and got it correct.
7. Use Online Resources:
Platforms like Khan Academy, MIT OpenCourseWare, and Coursera offer advanced math courses and lectures that can supplement your learning.
8. Follow me: most important tip 😉😁

How Science Tutoring Helps Students Understand Complex Topics?

Introduction Science is an exciting subject with a lot of interesting facts but, on the other hand, very challenging in many ways for students. This is due to the fact that theories and concepts presented are quite complex and sophisticated, time-consuming, and even require individual attention, which cannot be provided in a common classroom situation. This is where science tutoring, especially through online platforms, becomes an invaluable resource. With correct guidance, students can excel in even difficult areas and finally become accustomed to loving science over time.
The Role of the Science Tutor A science tutor is involved with an individual student on a one-on-one basis, in line with the student's needs and capabilities. Unlike in a classroom full of many students, where the teacher may lack the time to answer each student's questions, a tutor is able to focus on the areas where the student struggles the most. This could apply to difficulties in understanding the basic concepts of biology or working through the complicated maze of chemistry; a science tutor can break down concepts into manageable parts, making learning less overwhelming and much more enjoyable.
Advantages of Online Science Tutoring 1. Convenience and Flexibility: One major advantage of online science tutoring is that it is highly convenient. The students can attend their tutoring classes while sitting at home, without any need for transportation. It thus allows great flexibility in terms of scheduling the tutoring sessions in order to better fit into the busy life of a student. 2. Access to Expert Tutors: Online platforms link students with expert science tutors from across the globe. Whenever a student requires help, say in physics, chemistry, or biology, they will find a tutor for the same. This kind of access provides wide-ranging expertise, through which students receive high-quality instruction matched to their needs. 3. Interactive Learning Tools: These are not new to online science tutoring. They are usually simulations, virtual laboratories, and multimedia that enrich the learning experience of a student by helping them clearly conceptualize hard ideas and get to interact with the materials. An interactive approach may be particularly valuable to students who happen to be visual and experiential learners.
Tackling Difficult Topics with Online Science Tutors 1. Simplifying Complicated Concepts: Most students struggle with difficult topics in the sciences because they don't know how to break them down. It is possible for a science tutor to decompose a few complex topics into smaller and understandable parts. For example, in physics, he/she may focus on its basics before advancing to complex theories. This sequential approach helps inculcate a basic understanding, after which it is always easier to deal with advanced-level materials. 2. Building Confidence: Confidence is an important factor that propels the ability of the student to learn and succeed. When students have a rough time with complex science subjects, it usually hits their confidence levels. An online science tutor not only supports academically but also encourages and motivates the tutee in order for them to believe that they can surmount challenges. As children begin to learn and understand complex topics, they start becoming more confident, hence, resulting in a continued improvement in overall performance in science. 3. Tailored Learning Plans: Every student learns in a different way, and what may be effective for one is not effective for the other one. The science tutors design tailored learning plans that accommodate the learning methods of every individual as well as their needs. A tutor can adapt to the method of teaching that needs to be carried forward to a student, whether he is a visual learner or even an auditory one who demands the finest details in explanations. These personalized approaches help bring out the most learning from the student during a tutoring session.

The Importance of a Maths and Science Tutor Having difficulties with maths and science certainly calls for a tutor in both these subjects. A mathematics and science tutor can be useful in bridging the gap between the said subjects to a student, as the understanding of them is reinforced to an extent where it becomes easy to see how one conceptually executes a mathematical idea on a scientific problem. This holistic learning can be very helpful, especially in subjects like physics and chemistry, for which mathematical equations form a very integral part of the understanding of concepts.
Conclusion Of course, it is challenging to deal with complex science issues, but it is possible with proper backup. Science online tutoring services are flexible and tailored to enable student to master tough concepts and triumph in their learning. A science tutor helps a student to build a good base in the subject, gain confidence, and provide long-lasting interest in science. Well, a difference can be really large for any student's academic life with science, either with focused help in a few areas or total support with many of the topics. So, what are you waiting for? Learn science online from expert tutors and start mastering these difficult topics today!

Tinkering with my personal website again
Above screenie is zoomed out to capture everything. Anyone wanna guess which blinkies I made? Also, the Twitter blinkie just takes you to my BSky lol (on purpose).
Several of the images were put together by me! I can teach pretty much anything in tech, this is just the stuff that I thought of.
I made the floppy-disk icons myself, with some help from wifey on getting the text to render as part of the SVGs!

man i hate that one teacher ruined the whole concept of math for me bc i love physics and string theory and chemistry and all that stuff but every time I'm watching a video about it i hear like. specific algebraic concepts and i immediately lose all interest
#the word polynomial makes me want to throw things at the wall#it's always algebra too the more abstract the math the more mad i get#i like geometry at least i can make sense of shapes even when they're imaginary shapes#math is such an important part of science though and sometimes i can't engage with my spins because of it and it's upsetting#it just frustrates me bc of that one teacher making it as frustrating as possible for me only out of the whole class#like she targeted me specifically bc i was adhd and dyscalculic too she'd like. shame me in front of the class for it#you know? i kinda hate having gone to what's considered to be 'nice schools' where the faculty and management is nice enough#bc then when i have a legitimate complaint about how i was treated by a teacher they tell me 'oh this place doesn't have problems like that'#like when a teacher is actively refusing to give me a tutor WHEN IT'S REQUIRED BY ADA LAW FOR HER TO GIVE ME ONE IF I ASK

What do you teach Pocket? I picture you teaching math.
Not math, social studies! Though I do have a tendency to end up math tutoring more than I expect lol. Writing too
#genuinely i can't keep up with the senior math class except their stats unit#but sometimes i can help the juniors with their math#I've taught econ before but i don't this year#currently I've got sections of research and interdisciplinary writing#a philosophy/humanities in the real world section#and a Post Highschool Path Prep section of juniors (yeah that's actually what the school calls it)#PPP is new for me but it's basically an ACT/SAT tutoring class the first semester and a career interest class second semester#the other classes are for seniors and my school requires they take one of them since they're writing focused and generally our kids could#use more writing practice#so yeah mostly social studies and writing these days#tho technically i have to be able to pass muster for every subject on the SAT and ACT to tutor those juniors#so a smidge of science and math too#I'm a little all over the place this year#pocket talks to people#anon
