Early in the morning of October 25, 79 (year 832 in ancient Rome), Pliny the Elder died on the coast of Stabia during the expulsion of the last pyroclastic surge that came out of Vesuvius. The interesting thing is that he is the only ancient writer, and important Roman soldier and politician who died due to a natural disaster. Ironically, his passion was the study of nature. Pliny, born in 23, spent his childhood and teens during the dark reign of Tiberius ( 14-37) whom he referred to as "the saddest of men". He praised the emperor Claudius (41-54) saying that "Claudius was one of the best writers". During the reign of Nero (54-68) Pliny attended the construction of the Domus Aurea, emperor's palace.

Pliny began his military career in Germania. During the reign of Vespasian (December 69-June 79) he was procurator in Gaul and Hispania. Pliny was a close friend of Emperor Vespasian who in 77 appointed him commander of the Roman navy and that is why Pliny settled with his family in Misenum (the same city where emperor Tiberius died) on the coast of the Gulf of Naples, near Pompeii. He tried to help in the disaster but ended up among the victims of one of the most famous and deadly volcanic eruptions in history.

The day of the eruption, the youngest son of Vespasian, brother of the then emperor Titus and who two years later would become emperor Domitian, was celebrating his birthday.

Today we know what happened thanks to Pliny the Younger, also a writer, who documented in detail what he saw from Misenum as well as the testimonies he heard from the survivors in Stabia who were with his uncle.

My first time writing for DoL

Dirt and mud covered my body, maybe escaping the farm on a rainy day wasn’t a good idea. My ears flicked, I could hear two men talking in the alleyway ahead of me. I hid behind a dumpster and waited for them to leave. I continued my way to Domus Street, steering clear of the orphanage as I didn’t have enough money for this week's payment. I’m short a couple of hundred, but I could get it by tomorrow. 

As quickly as possible I made my way to the only safe house in town. Well, not exactly but it’d have to do. I quietly opened the window and crawled inside, landing on a pile of clothes. The room was silent except for a few snores coming from the other side of the room. 

I tiptoed to the bathroom and wet a towel, getting most of the mud that covered me off. Once I threw the towel into the hamster I looked at myself in the mirror. My body was covered in bruises and scrapes. My breast felt sore and my horns itched. I quietly broke down and huddled into a ball. I stayed like that for a few minutes before returning to the bedroom.

Whitney was still asleep and snoring thankfully, I don’t know if I’d be able to explain to him without breaking down again. I crawled under the covers and cuddled up to him, resting my head on his chest. “What are you doing slut?” He mumbled. I jumped, I didn’t know he was awake. He grabbed my hip to keep me from falling off the bed.

I looked up at him, he frowned upon seeing my ears and horns. I’m sure my eyes looked dead too. He moved his hand from my hip to my back, feeling my new tail. “Where were you,,,?” I shook my head and buried my face into his chest. I quietly sobbed, causing my body to shake. He held me closer, comforting me the best he could.

Once I had calmed some I poked my head up at him, “Farm…” He looked confused and took in my appearance again. Dead eyes, cow ears, horns, a cow tail, covered in bruises and scratches. He looked away from me with wet eyes. I knocked my head against his head to get him to look back at me. His eyes were still wet but he managed a small smile at my cow like gesture.

He petted my head and asked again if I could tell him where I was. I went into deep detail of my time at the underground farm. How every morning I’d be attacked by workers, the big pasture filled with other cowgirls and boys, the doctor visits, and the nightly milkings. I told him my conflicted feelings. How it was nice there, so peaceful. But I was still treated like cattle and abused.

I looked back up at him once I finished my story to see him silently crying. I started to tilt my head in confusion but stopped myself. I still felt like an obedient cowgirl but I needed to break that. He pulled me close again, holding me tight and burying his head in my hair. He held me like I was going to disappear at any moment. Only Robin had ever held me like that, when I’d be gone for weeks at a time to only return broken. 

“You better not leave me again slut.” Normally he would say that in an intimidating manner but he said it so quietly and with so much emotion. It occurred to me that he cares about me in his own way. He’s not good with feelings, he had to keep that tough demeanor.

I smiled with tears in my eyes and hugged him back just as hard. “I don’t want to.”

I woke up today and I decided to w3!gt myself. Scale didn't move since Monday. I'm st4rv!ng myself since Monday evening (10PM) so I changed the battery in this stup!d sh!t and it was still the same. You can tell I'm crazy but I decided to go to the shopping centre to buy a new scale. Came back home and the new one says the same. I know I didn't exercise for 2 days on that f4st because I was feeling like sh!t but seriously? I'm crazy. So I decided to w0rkout today and we'll see if it will change anything tomorrow. Fcn hell. I'll eat tomorrow or not.

I did my hair differently today and I recieved a lot of looks and smiles from men. I felt good with that.

Wstałam dzisiaj i postanowiłam się 2w4żyć. Waga nie ruszyła się od poniedziałku. Jestem na gł0dz!e od poniedziałku (22:00) więc zmieniłam baterie w tym głup!m g0wn!e i nadal pokazywała to samo. Powiecie że jestem szalona ale postanowiłam pójść do centrum handlowego żeby kupić nową wagę. Wróciłam do domu i nowa pokazywała to samo. Ułożyłam włosy dzisiaj inaczej niż zwykle i dostałam dużo spojrzeń i uśmiechów od mężczyzn. Czułam się z tym dobrze.

PRE-APOCALYPSE—

› the sullivan's were poor growing up. sully didn't get much in his adolescence and when he did, it was for his birthday or for christmas. by the time he was thirteen, he had gotten used to never getting his way or what he wanted.

› sully never ended up going to college but rather started out as a laborer and then got a job as a truck driver and has been with the same company ever since.

› he honestly can't complain about life. by the time the outbreak happened, sully had no family left which meant that he had no reason to go back to his hometown (he had been on the road, doing a delivery, when he had his first encounter with a zombie).

POST-APOCALYPSE—

› sully started out with a group of four or five other lonely survivors who were also trying to make it on their own until realizing that it would be easier with others. that particular group ran for about two years before they started dying off like dominos: once one died, the others followed not long after. sully got incredibly sick but was the only one who survived. turned out to be a suicide-murder attempt by one of them.

› within a four year period, he found himself in two other groups that tried to make it but ended up failing. after being alone for some time after that, he stumbled upon domus spei.. but not in the condition you might think.

› shortly before finding the front gates, sully had been fighting for his life. a hostile group of men had robbed him and left him for dead and unfortunately for him, they had made an awful lot of noise.

› in the horrible condition he was in, sully hardly wanted to stay long enough to get patched up. he just wanted to get in and out.. but then a pretty black haired woman, charlie, talked to him. and suddenly his opinion changed. sully decided to stay.

› long story short, over the course of seven years, he fell in love, got married and had twins with charlie. he thanks his lucky stars every single day that that group beat him up and that he found this community..

PRESENT DAY / TIDBITS—

› a little over a week ago, she went on a "quick in-and-out" solo supply run and never came back. he believes her to be dead and is having a really hard time dealing with his grief (especially considering how young their twins, maddy and dakota, are).

› after his wife went missing, sully doesn't talk nearly as much. most of the time, he'll only talk if he's approached first, he won't go out of his way to start a conversation with someone. he feels extremely conflicted with all of the different emotions he feels. love for his family, joy for his children, grief for his wife.. it's all too much.

› currently taking it one day at a time. sometimes even that is too much; some days he takes it one minute at a time..

› he goes by "sully" because that's what charlie started calling him. eventually he decided to introduce himself as sully as the rest is history.

I have noticed that a lot of my female latin/classics professors talk about roman men the way entomologists talk about insects.

In a detached, sometimes humorous way. They seem to take distance from the ways of roman men.

The way they destroy everything that lives, steal everything that shines, rape everything that can be raped. But especially the way they violate every border while at the same time expanding theirs : roman men have the monopoly on boundaries of all kind. They are the men who build the walls. They are the men who control knowledge. Their language is embedded with the fear of the Other, women included.

My professors take distance from that. The same thing happens to me. My specialty was 20th century art. I was inundated by the material embodiment of woman hating : woman raped, woman decapitated, woman-fantasy, woman-widow, woman in war, woman invaded, woman-alcoholic, woman-furniture. I had to take distance from that, I had to not take it personally and it was hard but it's better now. One of my favorite ancient subjects is the reign of Nero. The Domus Aurea. The beauty of it all. But if I take one second to consider the hate I crumble ; but I have to be the erudite one, knowing male scholars would never reciprocate.

This year I'll be the first scholar in my language to write about a female pioneer of photography (it's a pain to say this but I won't tell you who it is for fear of being doxxed. DM me if you want the finished work and if I trust you). There is not enough sources on her so I'll make one. And I will not take the entomologist route.

This is why I am not a feminist doomer at heart, even though it's hard.

The Roman Empire began shipping more goods to the Crumbling Isle. One morning, when Bry and Leo were fishing by the dock, a ship began unloading a beautiful horse, a creature that the men had only heard about in stories.

Leo approached the Roman emissary and inquired about the horse. It could be useful for the family's occasional trips to the other side of the island and the men would be able to cover more ground on hunting trips.

The emissary agreed to sell the horse to the family and Leo paid him a hefty sum.

The men named the horse Chryses, meaning "golden," and led him back to the domus.

Over the entrance to the Wilsthorpe maze in M.R. James's "Mr Humphreys and his Inheritance" there is a motto cut into the stone: "Secretum meum mihi et filiis domus meae" (My secret [is] for me and the sons of my house). James Wilson, the grandfather of Mr Humphreys' late uncle, had the maze built towards the end of the eighteenth century and, unbeknownst to Humphreys, it is not merely a labyrinth but a mausoleum. Wilson's ashes lie in the copper globe at the centre. (MRJ may have got the idea of a globe in a maze from the ancient turf maze at Hilton, near Cambridge, which has a stone globe on a pedestal in the middle.) [...] "Secretum meum mihi et filiis domus meae" is a straightforward variation on Isaiah's cry from the Vulgate, concerning his prophecy of God's judgement on the earth: "Secretum meum mihi, secretum meum mihi, uae mihi" (My secret [is] for me, my secret [is] for me, alas for me!) (Isaiah xxiv,16). But "Penetrans Ad Interiora Mortis" comes from the Vulgate Proverbs vii,27, where astonishingly it is part of a warning about consorting with a prostitute. Solomon warns against this "woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart" for "Her house is the way to hell, going down to the chambers of death" (in the King James version). Are we to take it from this that James Wilson's secret involved his travelling down the kind of sexual byways which are usually notable by their absence in MRJ's tales? Maybe so, to judge by the evidence provided by the copper globe. There Humphreys notes the figures of Cain instead of Hercules, Chore instead of Ophiuchus, and Absolon. Cain, who killed his brother (Genesis iv); Chore or Korah, who spoke against Moses and was swallowed up by the earth (Numbers xvi); and Absalom, who was slaughtered while entangled by his hair in a tree during a rebellion against his father, David (II Samuel xiii-xviii); are all Old Testament villains. Placed together on the globe, and accompanied by the 'Prince of Darkness', the fires of the Valley of Gehenna (Hinnom), the winged serpent, and Hostanes (the great magus of King Xerxes of Persia), they have been interpreted by those few writers who have tried to make sense of them as indicating that Wilson practised some kind of Satanism or pagan magic. Martin Hughes, however, has a different theory, which requires a more detailed examination than he gives to it, especially as he seems not to take account of its full implications. He identifies Wilson as a Cainite.

The Old Testament villains were seen as heroes by the original Cainites, a Gnostic sect denounced circa AD 180 by Irenaeus of Lyons in Against Heresies (a work familiar to MRJ and mentioned by him in The Apocryphal New Testament).(5) Irenaeus writes of the Cainites:

"...others say that Cain came from the Absolute Sovereignty above, and Esau, Korah, and the men of Sodom, along with every person of this sort, have the same origin. They were hated by the Creator because though attacked they suffered no harm, for Sophia took to herself what was her own in them. The traitor Judas was the only one of the apostles who possessed this knowledge. For this reason he brought about the mystery of the betrayal; through him all things on earth and in heaven were destroyed. They provide a work to this effect called the 'Gospel of Judas.' I have collected writings of theirs in which they urge the destruction of the works of the Womb, calling the Creator of heaven and earth Womb." (Book 1,xxxi,1-2)(6)

Like most of these early Gnostic sects, we only have their details via the Christian Fathers, but James Wilson would also have got his information solely from these suspect sources. Many Gnostic groups held that the Creator God of the Old Testament, the Demiurge, was an abortion created by Sophia (Wisdom), the last Aeon. This flawed Demiurge, imagining it was the true God, made the material cosmos, the earth being the lowest and most inferior cosmological sphere of creation. The Old Testament God was thus seen as being either evil, degenerate or barbaric (i.e. in accepting blood sacrifices). The Cainites therefore believed in what could be seen as a reversal of Old Testament tenets. If the OT was a result of the flawed Demiurge, then it was a logical step to revere its villains as heroes, and to despise figures such as Moses as traitors to humanity.

The images on the copper globe containing James Wilson's ashes can be taken as an allegory of Gnosticism. The winged Prince of Darkness is the Creator God presiding over the "umbra mortis" (shadow of death) that he has created in the material world. Various interpretations can be placed upon the winged serpent encircling the globe. According to some Gnostic groups, particularly the Ophites and the Naassenes, the serpent who tempted Adam and Eve to disobey the Creator God and eat from the tree of knowledge was a symbol of true Gnosis, opposing the Demiurge who had tried to keep mankind in a state of ignorance. The winged serpent, thus interpreted, may be a guardian of the secret knowledge that Wilson possesses. On the other hand, in the Gnostic "Hymn of the Pearl", contained in the Apocryphal Acts of Thomas, the earth-encircling serpent is seen as a symbol of the evil principle. In the Acts (MRJ's translation), one of the serpent-dragon's sons says:

"I am a reptile of the reptile nature and noxious son of the noxious father...I am son to him that sitteth on a throne over all the earth...I am son to him that girdeth about the sphere...that is outside [around] the ocean, whose tail is set in his own mouth." (Acts of Thomas, 32)(7)

If James Wilson was a Cainite, how would it have manifested itself in his lifestyle? Martin Hughes does not really deal with this at all, but it would seem that here is the core of the secret which Wilson wished to pass on to those of his family with the wit and intelligence to act on his hints. The Cainites, along with their contemporaries the Carpocratians, were labelled by Irenaeus as "licentious heretics". In Against Heresies, Irenaeus writes:

"They cannot be saved unless they experience everything, as Carpocrates also taught. At each sinful and disgusting action an angel is present; the agent must act boldly and make the impurity fall upon the angel present in the act, saying to him, 'O angel, I use your work; O power, I perform your operation.' This is 'perfect knowledge,' to perform without fear such actions as may not even be named." (Book 1, xxxi,2)

So by experiencing all things, the Cainites believed that they would be freed from an endless cycle of reincarnation, thus bringing the human soul closer to true Gnosis or knowledge. The sermon which Mr Humphreys discovers in the library at Wilsthorpe Hall is of an earlier date than the maze, so presumably Wilson was inspired by it. In the sermon, the labyrinth represents the pitfalls of a life spent devoted to the "Jewel" of the pursuit of the "World's Pleasures". Wilson would have seen this as yet another example of the mainstream Christian theology he had rejected, so in characteristically Cainite inversion he picked the maze as a suitable temple for his own religion. And in another inversion, the OT inscription on the stones became not a warning but an invitation. Wilson's theology combined license, including sexual license judging from the context of that inscription, with aspects of Magianic magic (the Magi may have shared the Cainites' opinion of the Old Testament God). Unsurprisingly, therefore, instead of salvation he achieved a burning, agonising life in death.

KORAES SUPER DUPER COMIC READING CHALLENGE 2024

Alright, I've decided to set a goal for myself. I've been binge reading comics for over a year but only of a specific variety and it's time to expand my tastes. Especially since OUTCAST ODYSSEY is updating on webtoons. The more comics I read, the better my own comic should be, right? I mean, supposedly.

I decided to read 100 of the top graphic novels on goodreads. The list spans all ages and genres, so there's going to be some VARIETY here. There are some graphic novels I've already read (like Maus or Calvin and Hobbes) that I didn't include. I dunno if I could handle reading Maus again (It stabs you in the heart, twists it and pulls it from your chest still beating, but instead of being happy about it like I am with fiction it's soured by the realization that this actually happened and then I want to die).

Obviously, a lot of these are series, and I'm not going to read the whole series of every book on this list. If I like it enough, I might continue it for fun, but it won't count toward the list.
