I don't know if the HTTYD books ever tell us why the Windwalker remains unnamed, but I like to think it's because Hiccup is leaving the decision up to them.
Many of the dragons in the books don't have names. It's more of a human thing, and the dragons who do have names typically have them because of humans.* Toothless is named by Hiccup (the only dragon named by Hiccup III in the books, as far as I'm aware - let me know if I'm mistaken). The Deadly Shadow, like the Windwalker, is most often referred to by their species name, but the three heads were named individually, probably by Termagant. Stormfly, Horrorcow, Bullheart, Hookfang, One Eye, and many other dragons were named by the humans who kept them. They don't seem to have or seek other names because, well, why would they? Names are a human thing. Most dragons never saw a need for them in the first place.
The Windwalker has an intensely negative history with humans when Hiccup finds them. And so it makes sense that although Hiccup claims them as his riding dragon, he doesn't take ownership of them or force a connection with them or impose human customs on them by naming them. If the Windwalker wants a name, they can choose one for themself or ask Hiccup to give them one. If they don't want a name, they don't have to have one.
It's also possible Hiccup is taking a cue from his mother here - Valhallarama has a close bond with her riding dragon, an entirely unnamed Silver Phantom. He might've learned from her that names aren't necessary for friendship.
*(Exceptions do apply - the Green Death (who went by Merciless in the time of Hiccup I), the Purple Death (appears briefly in book 1), and Luna (the second in command of the dragon rebellion), all have names but don't have significant connections to humans, and all are members of the species Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus. I think it's likely that Furious chose his own name, but with the Wodensfang it's hard to tell - it's possible he was given the name by Hiccup I, but it's just as likely he picked it himself, or grew into the title as he aged. There definitely seems to be a custom of names/titles that's unique to this dragon species, though.)
Anyways. Thanks for reading!

HTTYD Books Fanfic Poll
Hello, my fellow Dragonmarkers! Today, I've decided to make a poll. There are several ideas I'd like to work on, however, I'm struggling to choose which one to start on first. Granted, I have a feeling I know what you guys want me to work on first, but I still want to ask anyways. 😏
So before you vote, I'd like to list down the options below and a little summary as to what each choice will be about.
Poll will end on Hiccup's birthday on February 29th. So spread the word. 🙏🏻😉
『 All of these story ideas will try to cling to canon events as much as it can, or at least be loyal to it as canon-inspired. 』
<><><><><><><>
Thuggory's Saga
This story will be on Thuggory's POV throughout the Books and what was going on behind the scenes when Thuggory wasn't around.
Thuggory Name Parody Series
This work will be a one-shot series consolidated into one story that has Thuggory doing various things based on what his name is (i.e. Thuggory will be thuggish, Muggory will be drinking a mug or mugging somebody, Chuggory will be chugging ale, etc).
Fishlegs' Second Impossible Quest
(Post Book 12) Fishlegs drags Hiccup into yet ANOTHER Impossible Quest when Fishlegs seems to have forgotten his lesson and was caught sending love poems to Barbara the Barbarian. Suffering scallops, Fishlegs! Didn't Hiccup just say to NOT do this again?! 💢😠😒😑🙄🤦‍♂️
Actually, wouldn't it be hilarious if that's how Hiccup got married because everyone thinks that the love letters were HIS and not Fishlegs, causing him to marry Barbara or some other chick. lol 🤣
Exile on Cannibal Isle
(Book 1) What if the adults had decided to banish their youth that evening after their failure, regardless of the thunderstorm? Our hapless youths end up becoming Outcasts — not on the Mainland, as planned, but on Cannibal Isle instead: an island filled with natives and Outcasts who had a fondness for human flesh. How will Hiccup, Thuggory, and Co. escape their current predicament? And will they return in time before the Green Death roasts their Tribes to well-done human kabobs?
The Tale of Two Swords
Told from Endeavor's POV (and sometimes from Stormblade's), this story delves into their respective origins, how they came into the hands of their respective owners, and the events leading up to the conflict between Alvin the Treacherous and Hiccup the Third. Two swords, two grudges, two wills, two forces, and two ideologies will clash for supremacy!
Hiccup's Saga
(Post Book 12) This story will focus on Hiccup's story AFTER his ascension as the 13th King of the Renewed Kingdom of the Wilderwest. As well as his achievements, his experiences, his struggles, and his life milestones. This will try to stay loyal to the books and to the books' epilogues.
Hiccup the First's Saga
Told from Hiccup's POV until he meets Wodensfang, which will then transition to Wodensfang's POV ever afterwards. This will get into the details of his birth, the war with the Uglithugs, the Hooligans getting ousted from the Mainland and their migration to Berk; it will get to Hiccup's childhood and adolescence, the start of the brutal Human-Dragon Wars, and how he eventually meets Wodensfang; then his defeat of Merciless/Green Death, the founding of the Kingdom of the Wilderwest, and his achievements and milestone events as King, until his death.
Hiccup the Second's Saga
This will focus on Hiccup the Second's life from birth to the time of his death, including his life with his adopted draconian family, and his reunion with his father and family, and his struggles ever afterwards. I plan on this being told from his POV. Not sure whether to have this be a third-person narrator like what the Books were, or to have it be in the first-person in the manner of Hiccup writing an autobiography.
What do you guys think?
Hiccup's Young Chief AU
This story idea dives into what would happen if Hiccup had to become the new Chief of Berk early on in his youth. From this point, we have several options to choose from.
1) Have this be a sequel to "Exile on Cannibal Isle" if the ending ends up being tragic for the adults, and Thuggory and Hiccup are left to pick up the pieces after slaying the Green Death.
2) Have this set in Book 2, if Stoick dies in the fight against Alvin, as a consequence of the curse of Grimbeard's treasure.
3) Have this set in Book 7, when Madguts the Murderous was about to execute Big Bertha and Stoick in revenge, and Hiccup failed to return on time.
4) Have this set in Book 9, when Stoick is missing (via Excellinor the Witch), and Hiccup never finds him again.
5) Have this set in Book 9 when all the adults are missing or perished, and the Warriors-to-Be are the only ones left in the School (aside from the Outcasts, obviously), and so everyone has to fight together in order to escape.
6) Have this set in Books 10/11 when Stoick dies in battle and Hiccup is forced to lead his Tribe in their fight against both Alvinsmen and Dragons.
Old Wrinkly's Saga
(Pre-HTTYD) This focuses on Old Wrinkly's POV, from his origins, to his life, to the events of Humungous Hotshot and his daughter, to her eventual marriage to Stoick, to how he came to live with the Hooligans, aaaaaall the way to Hiccup becoming King.
Valhallarama's Saga
(Pre-HTTYD) This story focuses on Val's POV from her birth, to her romance with Humungous, to her marriage to Stoick, to her son Hiccup's birth, to her many MANY Quests, aaaaaall the way to her death.
Alvin's Saga (or Saga of the Outcasts)
(Pre-HTTYD) This focuses on Alvin's origins: from his birth, to his upbringing, to how he turned his Tribe into one of the most "modern" and dangerous Tribes in the Archipelago, how he came across the Legend of the King's Lost Things, his fateful encounter with his future arch-nemesis Hiccup, and his gradual elevation to ultimate power. I might have this story end once he meets with Hiccup. Or maybe I end it with his death. That's up to you guys.
Snotface Snotlout's Saga
(Pre-HTTYD / HTTYD) This story focuses on Snotface Snotlout's origins: from his birth, to Hiccup's birth, to the origin of his rivalry with him, and so on — right up to his death! (Or I could keep him alive instead?)
Norbert the Nutjob's Saga
(Book 4) This story is about Norbert's origins: His birth and childhood, his father's death, his dream to go to the New World, and turning the Hysterics into the greatest Viking Tribe in the Archipelago; his fateful encounter and feud with Hiccup the Third, and his eventual downfall. And then his return!
Deadly Shadow's Saga
(Book 10) This story is about the Deadly Shadow's origins: From birth to hatchling, to their fateful encounter with their mistress, Fishlegs' mother; her meeting Alvin and giving birth to his child; the death of Termagant and the Disappearance of her only child; of their eventual conversion to Furious' rebellion, and of their reunion with Fishlegs; and much more.
Furious' Saga
(Book 8) This story is on Furious' origins: His birth, to his meeting with Hiccup the Second, his life with him, facing his 'brother's' death, imprisonment, his meeting with Hiccup the Third, his escape, his rebellion, and finally his departure.
The Viking Tribes of the Barbaric Archipelago
This is a nonfiction fanfic that dives into the geography, history, culture, and customs of every Viking Tribe in the Archipelago (in the Books). You can look at this as a Guide to the Archipelago (an All You Need to Know About X book), or as a history book composed by a future historian. Take your pick.
<><><><><><>
Thank you very much for your support! I look forward to the results of your votes, and I'll let you guys know what the top 3 choices were by the end of February 29th.
Long Live the Wilderwest!

First episode of the night, How to Build a Dragon.
*inhales deeply*
I'm not sure if I'll make any HTTYD jokes, but if I do, books, movies, cartoon, and specials are not off the table.
The first is the dragon hunters building a dragon out of bones they haven't entirely desecrated and some fabric to use as bait.
OR
The mech that the resistance was building will be in the form of a dragon.
That would be so rad. I really hope it's the second one.
Ok, so, Wu and Cole are still pretending to be Dangerbuffs and causing havoc amongst the dragon hunters, while the others are prisoner. They're going to have to escape soon, either this episode or the next. There's a lot of plot to cover still and we're almost halfway thru the season.
I'm hoping they set the dragons free before they leave.
And the resistance is just picking up steam, which might mean consequences for Harumi and the others. After Mr. E, I'm not looking forward to that. That was
That was merciless in a way I haven't seen in a while.
Am I prepared for what happens next? No, but let's go!

Hi...if you don't mind me asking, who are your favorite romantic relationship's couples in books/ manga/ anime/movies/tv series (can be canon or non-canon)? Why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before......Thanks....
Hi! Thanks for your ask! This is a good question, and this is my first ask so don’t apologize! Currently my mains are
Dazai/Chuuya aka Soukoku from BSD, I really like their dynamic, just the familiarity they had when they came on screen for the first time together. I think Bungou is really well execute though, so S2 showing that they still can come together and pretty much treat each other the same way / exasperation with no heat? And then the light novels are soo helpful too! I really think they’re sweet for each other, and I just think that’s neat! Plus there’s so much to unpack with their relationship! Yeah Chuuya wasn’t happy when Dazai left, but did he really resent him for it? Did he take it personally? What are they going to do now? All they do whenever they’re together is their best to protect each other.
Gojo Satoru / Geto Suguru from Jujutsu Kaisen, the tragedy! Oh man! It took me a bit to get on board with this, but I’m in for life now. It was the “My six eyes tell me your Geto but my soul knows otherwise.” I haven’t looked back. Gojo so shamelessly admitted that and Geto fighting back? They actually remind me a lot of Soukoku, with the obvious being Gojo = Dazai and Geto = Chuuya, but also Gojo was the one who got left just like Chuuya. So much went wrong for these two when it didn’t have to! If Geto had just took the time to explain, if he didn’t stubbornly try to rationalize his mistake, if Gojo had not taken Geto’s words at face value, if he’d’ve pushed a little more. I really love the impact they had in each other. Geto is the reason Gojo pushes for a better future for young sorcerers (does not seem like it’s going that well) and Gojo was the reason Geto wanted to make the world a better place for sorcerers.
Sun Jing / Qiu Tong from Tamen De Gushi (Their Story), a Chinese manhua. The story is just so cute, innocent, and straight forward. No screwing around, misunderstandings, annoying drama, etc.
Galo / Lio from Promare - this movie was so good! These two are really cute! I’m gonna say they’re semi-canon …
Hua Cheng / Xie Lian Heaven Official’s Blessing. Tragic characters when separated but together work towards their best future! Love it.
Cheng Xiaoshi / Lu Guan from Link Click I watched this on a whim and was so impressed by the characters and story! Im super interested to see where their relationship will take them, especially after what’s been revealed in S2, which I’m still reeling from! I am eagerly waiting for season 3!
I’m curious about yours now! What would you say yours are?
Honorable Mentions in no particular order below the cut
Yeong-sin and Seo-bi from Kingdom (kdrama) even though they don’t interact much, them being the only two survivors of the zombie epidemic in Jiyulheon is really what sets them a part for me although anytime they’re around others they act like they don’t know each oher.
TodoDeku was super cute in a very innocent kind of way. I liked that Todoroki was the first person who wasn’t Izuku’s friend who to saw his potential and see him as competition. I haven’t followed My Hero since S4 tho.
Yoruichi / Soi Fon Bleach; I felt Soi Fon’s devastation, to be joined at the hip and devoted and then abandoned and left behind. Yoruichi is merciless, she didn’t gaf lol.
Speed / Trixie sealed in by the 2008 Speed Racer live actions. They were crazy in the anime.
Astrid / Hiccup from the HTTYD film franchise, what a power couple.
Nancy / Edward from Enchanted, they are wasted by Disney but they’re oh so cute!
Aurora / Phillip from Sleeping Beauty, they are also wasted by Disney.
Goku/Chichi Dragon Ball, Chichi is wasted by Akira.
Steve / Bucky too, from Captain America, the way Steve was constantly ready to raise hell for Bucky got me. I pretend anything Phase 3 and after didn’t happen.

Okay maybe I will talk abt my httyd ocs. As a treat. @ifthestarsarewilling thanks for the encouragement
Solveiga Viluf was a merchants daughter and, for most of her early life, was comfortable in her travels. Unfortunately her father wasn't a great businessman, or a great fighter, so when he wasn't making terrible investments, his goods and wealth was being destroyed in dragon attacks.
When her father arranged for her to be married, Sol didn't protest. She loved her father too much to disobey this bumbling old man. Even if her betrothed was piggish, filthy, unkind at best and destructive at worst. After 2 years of this, in spite of her apprenticeship to the town healer, Solveiga stowed away on a departing vessel and wound up wrecked on a lush island.
She survives on her own for a bit, foraging for berries and roots she knew were edible and scavenging from relatively fresh kills from the dragons on the island. Sol spent the nights in a makeshift little covering against a cliffside, listening to the haunting song of... something on the island.
That's how she winds up meeting Echo, a Deathsong dragon who's song had been of interest to her for a few months now. Of she could just get it to cooperate, she could get off the island. She couldn't go back to her husband, certainly, and returning to her father would disgrace him. With that in the back of her mind, Solveiga had to focus on hitching a ride before she worried about where she would end up.
Weeks were spent watching Echo - how he hunted, how he communicated, how he lured his prey in with his song. Sol winds up mimicking the huge beasts song and Echo thinks she's some lost, deformed adolescent Deathsong. By some miracle, she's not eaten, and the pair begin to slowly work together.
Now, Solveiga is a travelling healer and lover of art, drying and preserving flowers in Echo's thick resin as pendants and other art pieces. She comes off as a bit of an airhead sometimes, but if her survival on Deathsong Island and her massive carnivorous dragon are anything to go by, Solveiga Viluf isn't one to be trifled with.

Randi Varangr isn't quite as in-depth. Her village was destroyed by dragons when she was young, and she winds up a dragon hunter. A scout, mostly, as she was small and quick and could wedge herself into tight crevices when delving into a dragon nest or lair.
Randi is, by all accounts, a merciless bitch - until she's discarded after a failed attack she was leading and was to be fed to the prized dragons. A series of fortunate coincidences later, the ex dragon hunter is being dragged through the woods with her arm clamped in the sharp mouth of a malnourished Dramillion. The dragon had eaten nothing in captivity, which had worried her boss - he'd made a good deal with someone who wanted this brilliant blue creature in peak condition.
The woman had made peace with the fact that, now that the Dramillion was free from its cage, it would tear her to shreds in this cave and finally have its feast (which is self aggrandisement on Randi's part because despite being a strong late 20s woman, she could probably be mistaken for a buff 12 year old).
But the injured and sickly creature stuck its face in a thorny berry bush and started gorging itself on the fruit.
Randi and her dragon take a lot of time to warm up to eachother, but with Randi's bitten arm growing infected and the dragon needing to regain its strength, they were largely isolated together.
No art for Randi, unfortunately.
ANYWHO these are my little guys thanks for reading

(Carrying over the Seadragon musing I did over on Twitter)
I've been thinking a bit about the biology of the Seadragonus Giganticus Maximus.
Mainly, the reason why there are so few of them.
I briefly considered the concepts for the movie franchise's Red Death, but it's a bit too bloodthirsty for my taste(they have a baby battle royale until one survives)
Anyway, I think Seadragons are born so incredibly weak that most of them don't make it to a big enough size to survive. Their chances of survival are so miniscule that their existances are by pure chance, twists of fate- hiccups, so to speak. Yes, sweet sweet parallels. Seadragons are born near the bottom of the food chain and work their way up the more they grow, until they hit their life's peak as the apex predator.
When that peak happens varies from dragon to dragon, probably relative to their nutrition and environment they grow in. Considering Furious was already baby elephant-sized when Hiccup the Second was 7 while Toothless was tiny all of Hiccup the Third's life, I like to think harsher environments spur the growth process for Seadragons to increase their chances of survival. Toothless is living the pampered life of a cat for the most part, while Furious grew up in the wild. I do think slower grown, healthier Seadragons might end up bigger and/or stronger when they hit their peak... so who knows how massive Toothless will get.
I also thought it was interesting to note that despite their names Seadragons that weren't full grown didn't really seem to live in the sea, or at the very least have sea-creature attributes like fins and webbed feet. No particular affinity for water either. Honestly, it might just be that they grow so big that the ocean is the only place they can comfortably roam and rest in. They probably don't even need to swim at that size!
That's about all I can think of for the time being. If anyone else has more ideas they would like to add on, or correct a mistake I might have made here, feel free to let me know!

Lyf headcanons pt4
I've seen a lot of AUs and crossovers with HTTYD and can't help but think what if there was a new AU crossover of Vincenzo(kdrama) and Hiccstrid.
It would make for such an entertaining headcanon idea, like imagine a ruthless Hiccup who's playing Vincenzo being a badass mafia lawyer and Astrid being Cha Young, a brazen bold tenacious lawyer but with a twist of HTTYD universe. Although come to think about it Ruffnut's personality suits Cha Young more...
Since their personalities clash it would be messy if not written properly. But I want to see Hiccup as an antihero character who wants peace just as much as canon Hiccup and is ruthless enough to use merciless justice to achieve it. And as amazingly badass as Astrid is physically Cha Young's mental strength is something I think would very much complement these female leads very well.
Given Hiccstrid's witty comebacks and snarks (coughmainlyHiccup'scough), it would be fun to see them out of the Viking physical fighting stereotype for a bit and see Hiccstrid as badass lawyers who use wits and words instead of Inferno and the axe.
With enough backstory in this AU would be such a fun take since Vincenzo is dealing with the corruption of the law and HTTYD is dealing with adaptation and transformation from the old into the new (aka traditions to moderness).
The dragons would have to be inexistent tho. Else it's gonna be weird considering it to be a modern AU. Imagine Toothless as Inzhagi lmao.
And Viggo as Choi Myung Hee. Maybe Dagur as Park Seok Do or Hwang Min Seong. And Drago or Grimmel as Jang Han Seok. There would definitely be a lot of OC's as well.
And without the whole Maces and Talons metaphor, coz while it was a fun mind game it, soon got old with how much it was mentioned. And Viggo's actions were kind of predictable season four onwards once Hiccup match up with his game.
(P.s. this is just me being salty on the writers rtte coz some episodes especially seaason five onwards it felt more of like wasted potential rather than fulfilling. Like King of Dragons or 1&2 felt so rushed like huh?!) Anyays rants aside feel free to disagree.
Should I write it? Maybe I'll pos some headcanons here. It's gonna be a WIP.

Wodensfang's Saga
This saga focuses on Wodensfang's origins: His birth, his life, how he ended up in Merciless' rebellion, how he meets Hiccup the First, his time with him, the days of his successors, the dark times of Grimbeard the Ghastly and Hiccup the Second, his time in the volcano with the crown, his meeting Hiccup the Third, the dark times of Furious' rebellion, Hiccup's crowning, and the events afterwards.

Sadly, due to the limits of the poll, I was unable to add more. So here's the rest of them.
Wilderwest Whumpfest
A one-shot series focusing on whumping various characters in the books. This could be something minor like fatigue or backaches, sickness or injuries, sorrow for something, or even something as extreme as actual death or tragedy.
Companions of the Dragonmark
This work, as you already know from a previous post, focuses on platonic pairings in this series. There will be various types, such as human & dragon, human & weapon, human & human, human & pet, etc. Also includes friends, family, mentor-student, and even stranger (first time meeting) or acquaintance relationships.
Antagonistic Pairing Series
This work is something that I’ve just recently came up with, which focuses on antagonistic pairings. This can be pairings between hero/villain, villain/villain, villain/antagonist, hero/antagonist, antagonist/antagonist, etc. Pairings can include, Hiccup and Alvin, Snotlout and Thuggory, Alvin and Excellinor, UG the Uglithug and Excellinor, Madguts and Big Bertha, Snotlout and Hiccup, etc.
I’m liking this because nobody really writes fanfics that focuses on antagonistic pairings. Only romantic and platonic pairings.

Thank you very much for your support! I look forward to the results of your votes, and I'll let you guys know what the top 3 choices are once the poll's closed.
Long Live the Wilderwest!

things r a lil quiet for me rn, and considering I’ve kinda gotten back into the HTTYD books (never rly left, but became more active recently after giving some books a re-read). one thing I noticed is that there isn’t a lot of canon content of the dragon-human war back during Hiccup the first’s time, and unlike most of the world building in HTTYD books, there can be many interpretations to it.
I would love to see how Merciless acted as the king of dragons and his interactions with Wodensfang, considering they’re both sea dragons (would they trust each other or have some kind of rivalry? I don’t think their relationship was explicit, but given that Wodensfang was sent to assassinate Hiccup, there’s probably some degree of trust between em). We also don’t know a lot about Hiccup the first aside from him becoming king of Wilderwest and Wodensfang’s blood brother. honestly I’d love to hear your headcanons if you guys have any.

I really don’t care for how they handled the Deathgrippers in the third movie.
HTTYD 3 negativity under the cut.
To clarify, I really hate they end up presumably killed off and it’s portrayed as a heroic act on Toothless’s part.
Because these dragons were in the same boat as the Light Fury was. They weren’t doing this for fun, they were mind controlled the same way she was. The only difference is that these dragons aren’t pretty by human standards, and Grimmel mentions offhandedly that they eat other dragons, and it feels like the movie’s trying to get us not to care about them because of that.
But if HTTYD 3 is trying to make the statement that the dragons are wild animals (at least as long as it supports Dean Deblois’s desires for the movie’s direction), that really isn’t a good justification. Are only some carnivores (as in, the ones most humans think are cute) worthy of protection?
The film certainly seems to argue that. Had the Deathgrippers been replaced by Gronckles, Deadly Nadders, and other dragon species we’d seen and got to know before the movie set them up as merciless killers, they could play as much triumphant music as they wanted, but it’d be hard to watch without thinking of the main riders’ dragons, wouldn’t it? And you know, if Grimmel had decided to use the Light Fury to fight Hiccup and Toothless rather than flee (because, after all, what better to kill a Night Fury with than with a dragon that matches their abilities) the two would’ve done everything in their power not to hurt her.
But because the Deathgrippers are designed to be as scary as possible and not to be Toothless’s girlfriend, we’re supposed to cheer as Toothless blasts dragons that are suffering the same fate as his girlfriend and are just as much under his protection as she is out of the sky.
