Arthur, smiling like a dork: Yea there's this guy in my dreams, his name is Merlin, he's a warlock and he's the most amazing person! He's kind, brave, wise, powerful and just over all fucking brilliant! He's inspired so many of my most successful works and he's the one who brought me here and he doesn't even exist! I know it's stupid, but I kind of fell for him...he's just one of those people who you can't hate, no matter what, y'know? Once the Future King: An Original Potterverse Tale

At the turn of the 17th century, in the midst of the reign of the Virgin Queen Elizabeth I, a reclusive freelance Magizoologist with a mysterious, tragic past named Bairn MacDuran was tasked with “dealing with” a werewolf spotted around the Forbidden Forest just outside his old alma mater, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. While tracking that werewolf, Bairn stumbled across a wizened old tree, where a strange voice called out to him -- 

Help me. Let me out. Help me. 

Where anyone else might have been afraid or distrustful, recalling the rumors of a ghost who haunted this area of the Forest, Bairn without any hesitation or questions took out his wand and methodically broke the curse on the tree, releasing a very pale, frail wizard in very fine, old-fashioned robes from within. The wizard almost immediately collapsed from exhaustion, hunger, and thirst, and Bairn hoisted the man up over his shoulder, carrying him as he rode his dragon familiar Morag back to his small cottage up in the Scottish Highlands.

Eventually the truth came out about this mysterious man Bairn had rescued -- he was in truth the great wizard Merlin, court magician of the legendary Muggle King Arthur, trapped in that tree by the witch Nimue over a thousand years prior. And over time, Merlin adds onto his legacy as the most powerful magician of all time while he, Bairn, and a circle of new associates fight against the rise of witchcraft hysteria and for the protection of creatures and Beings “left behind” by wizards and hunted by Muggles. Opposing the group are the Wizards’ Council -- a group of solely British-born and Pureblood wizards that claims authority over the affairs of witches and wizards in the British Isles and works toward keeping the Wizarding and Muggle Worlds as separate as possible -- and the self-appointed Witch-Finder General, Reuben Marwood -- a ruthless religious zealot with an odd proficiency for violence who is determined to stamp out all magics that aren’t of his God. 

And as Merlin connects with this new fellowship he has joined and truly blooms into the wizard the Wizarding World knows him as -- the most powerful Slytherin-aligned wizard in history, if not the greatest wizard of all time -- he finds the heart that had only ever beat for Arthur Pendragon softening toward his new counterpart -- this man with the attitude of a loner, the moral compass of a rogue, the heart of a father, and the spirit of a king.

Merlin's Last Name

I have a dilemma. My OCD is super mad about the tags for Merlin posts, but I’m gonna tackle things one at a time, starting with Merlin.

I currently use Emrys because it’s the most common, but it’s frustrating to me because I know it’s not a surname.

Ambrosius is the second most common because I believe it’s one of the names used for Merlin in Arthurian legend. I’m starting to lean towards using it instead, but I’m not sure.

So what do you think? Spread this around please, I want to hear people’s thoughts on this.

IT'S MYTHOLOGY MONDAY AND TODAY YOU (merlin friendo) LEARNED ABOUT MERLIN'S OAK!

EDIT: from feedback I made a quick edit for accuracy's sake.

So in Wales, there is a town named Caerfyrddin, which the English call Carmarthen (because the English be doing that when they colonize places, sadly enough). The name means 'Merlin's Fort'! And in the town, in the 1600's, this teacher planted a tree on a street corner, and it became known as 'Merlin's oak.' Supposedly there was even a part of the tree that looked like a face; and with the story that Merlin was trapped in a tree (other versions say a cave or something, but a tree is a popular one) by his apprentice, this obviously have some significance to the locals and folklorists.

A local legend says that [Mr. Beaver voice] There is a prophecy, that when the tree falls, so will the town.

And then in the 1800's, some guy tried poisoning the tree? What a dick. It didn't kill the tree, and fearing their own safety the tree was protected with barriers. Then someone set the tree on fire; the tree was finally removed in the 70's. And no worries! The town is still there.

It DID suffer through horrible floods for the next few years though. Hurm.

There are pieces on public display in local museums, but there is also a new tree on the spot planted there.

so Merlin was most definitely malnourished before Camelot bc Ealdor definitely didn't have enough food for everyone. And one of the side affects of malnourishment in childhood is stunted growth. Merlin was one of those kids who was malnourished, but he is still taller then Arthur (not by a lot, but still taller). Arthur, who is a prince with more then enough food to help him grow. Even Gwaine's shorter than him (he's a noble, so it isn't malnutrition). It also can't be blamed on genetics, Hunith is quite short and Balinor is (I think) 6'0 something. Hell he's even taller/same height as many of the knights/guards we see!!!

So my question is, how tall would Merlin have been if he had the same resource's as Arthur, Leon or Gwaine??

Musings on Myrddin

Introducing a Bearded Old Bastard

Ricky has mentioned Myrddin and his distrust of Welsh poets before – towards the end of THE CROWS, where in his POV he is sulking about Eglantine Pritchard and the dangers of speaking Welsh, in case some ‘bearded old bastard’ shows up. In the hardback edition, there’s a short story called ‘Gerald’, in which Ricky meets Myrddin for the first time as a 10-year-old.

In THIRTEENTH, when Ricky is severely depressed and threatened by Wes’s presence in the house, he explicitly thinks of Myrddin by his Latinised name – Merlinus Sylvestris – and complains to himself that Myrddin was a better prophet than he is.

In THE DAY WE ATE GRANDAD, Myrddin makes an actual appearance. He isn’t real, exactly: the idea for Myrddin was workshopped with Robert Mitchelmore, whose poem, ‘οὐκ ἔπεφνεν ὄφιν: he did not slay the dragon’ (2010), appears as an epigraph to Part 2: Fall of the Titans.

Praise poems were meant to render their subject immortal, so that their names would never die so long as the poems were still spoken. Myrddin has, by now, so many stories and faces, that he is an immortal figure wherever his myth is known, and in that sense is no longer a man but an avatar of his own fame. That means there are baked-in limitations to his powers; he can do everything the stories about him say he can do, but according to this Myrddin, no story has been written where Myrddin saves the world from a Lovecraftian entity, so in that sense, he is powerless.

Myrddin is also not a heroic figure – he’s not a man of action, but a seer, a bard-prophet, and in the Welsh tales he was given his gift of prophecy by God to annoy Myrddin’s father, who was the Devil. Myrddin was meant to be the antichrist, but was baptised on the way out of his mother by a quick-thinking nun, which restored his free will. The infant Myrddin, now able to choose for himself, decided to devote his powers for good – mainly to aggravate his dad – and thus was given the spiritual gift of prophecy.

In my version of Myrddin, I’ve conflated his shape-shifting powers with those of Taliesin, another bard-prophet, and used parts of ‘The Battle of the Trees’ in his speeches. Myrddin is a Carmarthenshire lad, and looks a bit like an estate agent until you look more closely and see that his smart suit is just another skin he wears.

As to what Myrddin is doing there: he’s been interested in Ricky for a while, and this time he’s in our world (as opposed to the Otherworld) because one of his very distant descendants has asked for his assistance. All will be revealed in Chapter 3.

   Aquila tried to hold back a laugh when Stan spoke one more of his randomnesses and received a shove from his girlfriend, but when Serpens, below her, began to laugh outrageously, she couldn't help it and started to giggle. The girl loved the way her siblings got along with her friends.

   Syd got into a debate with the boy about how it made no sense, supplemented by Crux and Max, when Teddy came into the sight of the six other wizards. He looked a little embarrassed that was interfering with the conversation, and was visibly limping.

— Hey, Teddy — Aquila spoke, surprising everyone, since it was her mission in life to ignore the boy. Maxine was so surprised that she took her legs off Crux's lap and sat up properly, concentrated to know what this unexpected conversation would lead to.

— Hey, Aquila — this time it's Sydney that almost falls when doesn't hear the typical "sunshine" come out of Theo's mouth, but instead the real name of the girl — I just wanted to say thanks for this morning. My ass is so sore, i can't even walk straight.

— It was a mess. But like i said, it looks like you were born for this — she got off her brother's lap, crossing her legs as she faced the taller one.

— Context, please — Stan spoke. A curious tone in his voice.

— She helped me to ride — Teddy replied.

— I'm sure she helped — Max's laughter followed the comment.

— Not that this is wrong — Serpens hastened to say — It's totally normal and each person has their own… preferences?

— Yep. Although that wasn't my first guess about you — Syd spoke, resting her head on her hand.

— What are you guys talking about? — the youngest of the Lehnsherr-Black daughters asked, like they weren't saying anything with sense.

— They're deducing that you, dear sister of mine, had sex with The Chosen One, in which specifically you had the penetrative "power" — Crux explained. Surprisingly, the person who blushed was Theo, not Aquila.

— What nonsense! — the girl replied — I just taught him how to ride a broom!
