Sydney Adamu becoming a Michelin-starred chef is very important
Only 2 black women have gained a Michelin star. Only 2. I know Sydney Adamu is a fictional character , but Syd gaining a Michelin star is very important.
We all get that Carmy doesn't care about the Michelin stars at EMP because he didn't earn them. He retained them. The disdain for the difference is clear in his voice.
But he'd earn stars for Sydney. He'd die for his own stars, but he'd do anything the universe asked to get stars for her. Because like offering Sydney the restaurant at the end of season one, all Carmy has is the talent to earn to stars. His talent and focus, his grit are all he has to give her. So he will die trying to earn Michelin stars for her, for them.
Carme Ruscalleda is the female cook in the world who has been awarded the most Michelin stars: a total of 7.
Born in 1952 in Sant Pol de Mar (a small coastal town in Barcelona Metropolitan Ambit, Catalonia), she came from a family of farmers and started working in her family's shop, which was a butcher's. There, she started preparing ready food for take away, and developed her passion for cooking.
In 1988, she and her husband opened their restaurant Sant Pau in their hometown Sant Pol de Mar. Their mix of traditional Catalan and Mediterranean cuisine with avantguarde and creative cooking brought them great success and recognition. In 2004, she opened a Sant Pau restaurant in Tokyo (Japan). She has also written many recipe books for both professionals and non-professionals.
Nowadays, she is considered one of the most innovative cooks in the world and is the woman who has been awarded the most Michelin stars. Last week, the University of Barcelona made her Doctor honoris causa in recognition of her work.
CARMY: So how are you gonna get one if I can't get a hold of you to finalize all these details?
SYD: It was 11:30 at night Carmy!
CARMY: Well how do you think we're fu-kin get a star, if you're out all hours with Connor or Marcus or whoever you're out with when I'm trying to talk to you ?
SYD: That was one fu-kin time for a birthday celebration. And I know that YOU of all people aren't bringing this up about ME!
Went to a one-star Michelin sushi place the other night for an Omakase experience, $800 for the two of us. We are both experienced chefs, so we rarely get to eat food as nice as we serve but.....half the dishes objectively SUCKED, like....really really bad. We laughed about it, but I'm so sad that amount of money was spent 🥲😭 LA fuckin blows. We both agreed even if it was half the price we would never go back. The sashimi, soy sauce, and Wasabi were notably good, but it didn't make up for the rest or price tag.
(Next day, we both had tummy problems, but that could have been just the outrageous amount of fish and fermented items.)
Was Sydney’s omelette scene inspired by the first black female Michelin-starred chef, Mariya Russell?
It is clear that Sydney made an omelette for Nat because she loves taking care of people, but I am just wondering, were The Bear creators inspired by chef Mariya Russell’s journey from scrambled eggs to Michelin star?
It is so interesting that Chef Mariya earned a Michelin star as CDC at Kikko, a restaurant that was located in Chicago. Also in the article, the chef says, "I remember learning how to make myself eggs and wanting to do it for everybody." Doesn’t that sound like Sydney? Another thing I find interesting is that Chef Mariya’s husband is also a chef.
I need y’all to read the article because the similarities between Sydney and chef Mariya are very interesting. If Sydney’s character is to some extent inspired by the first black female Michelin-starred chef, The Bear creators deserve all the awards for paying homage to Chef Mariya.
