🦌Whumpcember 2024 (by @kabie-whump): An evil wizard has turned Santa's reindeer into humans, who now have to live with their new bodies. A series of shorts with very interesting and cute characters that I definitely need to keep reading if I could.

but I’m thinking about how Agatha Harkness saw Rio Vidal for the first time in 1690s Salem and immediately fell to pieces.

We’re talking colonial Massachusetts.

✨Puritan hellscape✨

Everyone’s named Mercy or Deliverance or Goody Something and they think dancing is heresy and color is a sin.

1690s townsperson or something be like: A pox on her palette! God made beige, and she mocketh Him with plum and peacock, THE SLOVENLY WITCH!

Agatha’s been raised under starched linen and shame, laced into stays so tight she can’t even breathe properly, living under the icy glare of a coven that calls itself enlightened while still fearing her and don’t even get me started on her—

TOO LATE

Agatha’s mother didn’t want her.

She didn’t just think it. She said it. Wished her child had never been born—right to their face.

So Agatha doesn’t feel like she belongs anywhere. She just survives. She endures because no one ever taught her how to be wanted.

But then Rio Vidal shows up.

Pause.

Rio Vidal/Lady Death is played by a Puerto Rican actress, so yeah—buckle up, babe, we’re going there. I don’t read the comics, and if she’s different there, that’s cute for her. But I’m not talking about comic book Rio. I’m spiraling over Agatha All Along Rio. That’s the one ruining my life.

This witch.

Cool? Cool.

Okay, so according to the internet, Agatha was put on trial for practicing dark magic in 1693—which would’ve made her around 18 at the time.

So let’s say that’s roughly when they met.

In SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS, USA.

That’s not just historically inaccurate, it’s cosmically disruptive. Puerto Rican migration to the US didn’t really begin until the late 1800s, and even then it was mostly to big, populated places like New York—not dusty, Puritan, white-knuckled colonial Massachusetts.

What I’m saying is, there should NOT have been a tan-skinned woman with long dark hair and green dresses, speaking Spanish like spun sugar and thunderclaps, strolling through a damn witch trial town in 1690-whatever.

People like Rio weren’t seen. Weren’t recorded. Weren’t supposed to be there. But there she was. In the middle of Salem.

Glowing? Maybe.

Smirking? Most likely.

Real? Undeniably.

And Agatha saw her. REALLY saw her.

And I know she just disintegrated.

She opened her mouth intending to say something charming and mysterious and instead blurted out, “Do you like herbs?” while glowing like a cursed lantern and trying not to float off the ground.

Because Agatha knew.

Maybe not consciously. But somewhere deep in her bones she recognized Rio for what she was.

Death.

The end of the line.

A cosmic being who walked the Earth quietly, unseen, only felt at the edge of breath.

Most people look through her. She’s not supposed to be noticed. She blends in because she HAS to.

But Agatha noticed.

Agatha stared at those big brown eyes and full lips.

Agatha FLIRTED. Or at least tried to.

She brushed Rio’s hand and had the audacity to say, “Oh. That’s new.”

Because it WAS.

No one touches Death like that.

No one calls Death pretty. Or beautiful. Or kind.

No one yells ‘¡VÁMONOS!’ at a group of slow-ass villagers and then winks like it’s foreplay. Rio probably just stood there, a little stunned that Agatha’s pronunciation had improved, then smiled to herself and touched the bruise on her neck where Agatha bit her the night before.

And it wasn’t just lust.

Rio taught her things like Spanish. Ancient stories. Spells that hadn’t been spoken in centuries. The quiet rules of the universe whispered under wool blankets while Agatha traced symbols on her stomach just to make her giggle. And Rio laughed. For the first time in eons.

Or maybe… ever?

Death, laughing. Because of a witch.

They were weird.

Chaotic.

Probably too much at times.

Agatha carved secret sigils into candlesticks, quiet spells to make Rio stay a little longer. Rio hummed forgotten lullabies and brought her tea without being asked, like it was instinct. They loved each other—softly, stubbornly—two misfits clinging to something that felt like home.

Every Mary and Abigail in the village became background noise.

Every word from her mother became weightless.

Agatha wanted Rio.

And Rio—who had always kept herself separate, who had never been touched without fear—STAYED.

She knew there would be consequences. That loving a human would change her. Cost her. But Agatha made her wonder. Made her believe… maybe even Death wasn’t meant to walk alone.

And so she gave her everything she could. Love. Respect. A child. A home. A future.

✨ Sirius ships ✨

Yup, it's me back again with my rarepairs bullshit. This year, the pair are even weirder than last. I mean, who would have thought that you could ship Sirius Black with Lily's bitter, horrible sister or his even more bitter rival. Just you wait though, because I have some recs for ya!

1. In the language of flowers by dwellingondreams (T, 78,183, Sirius Black/Petunia Evans Dursley)

(I am the one who says 'fuck you') - Benjamin Garcia, 'Ode to the Corpse Flower'. Petunia drips magic the way she drips anger. Sparingly. Subtly. Nothing overt or obnoxious. Nothing that attracts the stares of other children or the suspicion of adults. Just things that help her. Her dolls line back up after the football Lily was kicking about ruins their perfect symmetry. Her bed makes itself while she brushes her teeth meticulously. Tea that is slightly too hot or too cold settles to the perfect temperature. Magic maintains the realm of order she has built around herself. (A witch!Petunia and muggle!Lily AU, covering the Marauders' years at Hogwarts and the First Wizarding War).

To quote one of the bookmarks: A stunning magic-swap AU that sends Petunia to Hogwarts in place of Lily. Thoroughly spectacular in its attention to the teen girl world of the 1970s and the misfit neurotic who finds herself becoming a heroine. Is it the best Marauders-era story ever written?

As a neurodivergent gal, Petunia in this fic is so relatable. I could see too much of myself in Petunia's feelings and actions throughout the fic. She is messy, sometimes bitter and uncomfortable, but gradually grows into a determined and capable woman with such a sweet relationship with Lily, her Gryffindor girlfriends and the Marauders.

Honestly, Petunia's relationship with Sirius is just one of this fic's highlights. You could truly see how they could fit together as a couple. They're both headstrong and powerful, with sharp minds and even sharper tounges. They don't always get along, but when they do, they're unstoppable.

The writing is so insanely poetic with many memorable descriptions that stay with me long after I've finished it.

One of my best finds this year for sure!

2. Beyond The Veil by Adreamermusing and ashesashesshackles (M, 97,730, Sirius Black/Severus Snape)

In one world, Sirius Black ignored Severus Snape's warning and went to the Department of Mysteries to save his godson's life. He died and went beyond the veil. In another world, Sirius Black stayed back. This made all the difference. An AU where Sirius Black survived and now knew Severus Snape's deepest secret.

Hear me out, you won't regret reading this fic.

Reading this one makes me realize how similar both men are. Both try to run away from their family, both capable, smart yet so traumatised and starved for love and affection. The draw has been there since the beginning, and in a strange twist of fate, that seemingly hostile attraction has the chance to turn into something else when Sirius discover Snape's secret.

Honestly, bravo to the authors for whipping up a fic with such mind boggling emotional impacts. Both men are such a wreck, but once the connection is established, they couldn't let each other go. Yet, their journey is not smooth sailling at all, especially in the backdrop of the war where Snape needs to win a war and Sirius wants to protect Harry so badly.

This fic is so raw and angsty from time to time. The multiple POVs among Sirius, Snape and supporting cast lends this story a very strong voice with many heavy hitting scenes. Even though this fic is not canon compliant, I've gained better appreciation for canon characters and relationships through the authors' interpretation, particularly Sirius and Remus', Harry and Sirius', Remus and Nymphadora's, as well as Dumbledore and Severus'.

We even get the pleasure to see Harry slowly uncovers Snape's hidden aspects beyond their mutual loathing, which helps Harry to understand more about the man behind the notorious potion master.

All of this happen without any of the characters being OOC. The development between Sirius and Severus is slow yet lovely and believable. There was so much bad blood in their past, yet I'm genuinely in awe at the authors' ability to unpack and reconcile it, while showing how much comfort they've found in each other despite everything.

This is, without a doubt, one of the best Snack fic on ao3!

When I tell you that this fandom has been driving me nuts because of the way they treat Jeremy

They think Jeremy "coddles" Jean too much but honestly? He's the only one keeping an appropriate behavior with him. They're basically strangers, he knows he has no right to push, to be aggressive, to shame Jean. And he understands Jean in a way no other Trojan can

It's so weird that the fandom doesn't like that

Do they think that if Jean gets pushed enough he'll magically ✨heal✨faster and they'll get to read some smut???? Well, that's not how it works sorry

The more you push someone like Jean, the more he feels backed into a corner. Then he can only shut down or lash out. Either way it's a hundred steps back in terms of actual healing. The less people push, the more Jean opens up

Jeremy got it right from the start (except for a few hiccups)

But such a big part of the fandom doesn’t see that. They are just too fixated on the original trilogy, where EVERYONE was brash and kind of brutal with each other (someone arrogant and inconsiderate like Kevin fits right in with the misfit Foxes, while the Trojans/Coach Rhemann would humble him so fast... now THAT's a story I'd love to see 👀 lol). So they see Jeremy's behavior as "coddling"... when it's just kindness and understanding

Honestly yeah . Pre TGR there was like this consensus that Jeremy was going to like strong arm and “soft Dom” Jean into healing, and it made 0 sense to me (and honestly frustrated me beyond belief) especially since Jeremy was so insistent that Jean’s healing wasn’t his business and Jean stated that he liked Jeremy bc Jeremy gave him boundaries. Also Jean never really seemed to bow to Jeremy so why ppl were so insistent that he would is beyond me.

After TGR I’ve seen a lot of takes that are annoyed Jeremy’s so much of a pushover and lackluster and doesn’t have a backbone but like … he does? U don’t have to be brash and brutal and an asshole to have a spine 😭.

I also agree 100%. The parallels between Jeremy and Jean let Jeremy understand him sm better than everyone else on the Trojans, and while there were some hiccups, he’s the only one handling this appropriately. Cat and Laila and Jeremy and the rest of the Trojans are all strangers to Jean, and the fact that cat and Laila felt so entitled to his trauma made me insane. Like they pushed and he pushed back , and kept refusing to give answers so much that Jeremy had to go a different route to get an answer by calling Kevin. (Even in this book, they tried to push, and Jean actually has to snap his fingers in Cat’s face at one point to get her to listen to him. And I know it’s after he’s been hurt but my god)

That’s why (and Ik this wasn’t in ur ask) but that scene where Laila says Jean can’t lie to them because they’re his people also kinda rubs me the wrong way? Because like 1.) he can’t lie bc he’s never been allowed to before and 2.) it’s more like they push and he gets angry enough to correct them. (Ex: I didn’t ask)

But back to ur ask I would love to see Rhemann go head to head with Kevin lol.

Silver and Sebek’s designs for the Neverland AU! Hopefully you all can see the inspiration for their outfits, but, in case you can’t, Silver’s is based on the outfit Aurora wears when she lives in the cottage in the woods, and Sebek’s is based on Prince Philip’s outfit. I just love referencing Sleeping Beauty when I can for Diasomnia and couldn’t resist when making their outfits for the au.

Time for some lore dumping about Silver and Sebek! Silver is a Diurnal Fairy, meaning he has a talent, but does not have magic! He is an animal talent fairy who Lilia found and raised in Briar Valley. When Silver was still young, he was attacked by some Nocturnal Fae that cut off Silver’s wings and before they could attempt to take things further, Lilia found them and nearly tore them to shreds. Since then, Silver is learning to navigate the world without wings and is training to be a knight for Malleus.

Sebek is half Diurnal and half Nocturnal with his dad being a tinker fairy and his mom being a nocturnal fairy. Sebek is able to use magic. He was protected by Malleus during a hawk attack on Briar Valley and ever since then he’s devoted his life to training in order to be a knight for Malleus. He’s jealous of Silver being able to stand by Malleus as a fairy without wings, much less he’s also a Diurnal Fairy. He doesn’t see Silver as his equal at first, but he comes to learn just how similar the two of them are as they are both misfits in Briar Valley.
