"Wellbeing is Everyone's Responsibility, Not Just HR" - #BelievePerform
This declaration is believed wholeheartedly. The vulnerability of leaning into the accountability of being a #professional contributor to #PsychologicalSafety is not easy #work. It's extremely challenging to step out of our comfort zones because we could lose relationships with people that are in our circle of influence.
Even so, it can be worth it to live into our values and professional #CodeOfEthics to mitigate the risk of #MoralInjury. Everyone will not understand our journey and we will discover a lot of people that do not align with our values because #ethics is a challenging subject. What are the ethics related to building a trustworthy character? What is involved with cultivating a #LearningCulture?
The discomfort of getting comfortable with uncomfortable is where we learn and doing things the way we've always done them is often not sustainable in business because customer needs change.

Burned out doctors or broken system? | The Stream by Al Jazeera English First, do no harm. The main tenet of the Hippocratic Oath doctors take when beginning their career to care for patients. But what happens when they have to navigate roadblocks that prevent them from putting patients first? Issues of insurance, electronic medical record-keeping, litigation, and budgets mean many doctors face as much time filling out forms as they do at the bedside. According to Dr Wendy Dean, “every time medical professionals have to choose anything other than their patient, it can be indicative of moral injury, or it predisposes them to moral injury.” Dr Dean and Dr Simon Talbot first used this term in a 2018 opinion piece that resonated with many. The term 'moral injury' has its roots in war. It was first used to explain why military veterans were not responding to standard treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. Moral injury, as defined by researchers from veterans' hospitals, refers to the emotional, physical and spiritual harm people feel after "perpetrating, failing to prevent, or bearing witness to acts that transgress deeply held moral beliefs and expectations." Talbot and Dean concluded that moral injury describes the conundrum of today’s medical professionals: They know how best to care for their patients but are blocked from doing so by systemic barriers related to the business side of healthcare. On the next episode we’ll examine this concept of moral injury in the medical field, and the toll it may be having. Mindfulness and Meditation
“Be happy in the moment, that’s enough. Each moment is all we need, not more.” -Mother Theresa
Mindfulness is the ability to be fully present in the moment. Host Katelyn Darrow shares how to get clarity and peace of mind to ride oneself of anxiety, stress, and to help with connecting with others. An in-depth interview with Tom Voss and his sister, Rebecca Nguyen, authors of the book, Where War Ends, provides insight into moral injury and how mindfulness and meditation can alleviate the pain. Tom served as an infantry scout in the 3rd Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment’s scout-sniper platoon. While deployed in Mosul, Iraq, he participated in hundreds of combat and humanitarian missions. Through a newfound interest in meditation, he gained understanding that eases the pain of the past and offers real hope for healing in the present. Simple breathing exercises gave Tom what medication, therapy, alcohol, and drugs couldn’t: the chance to heal a soul he didn’t even think he had anymore. He pursued meditation training and discovered sacred breathing techniques that shattered his understanding of war and himself — and moved him from despair to hope. Voss’s story will give inspiration to veterans, their friends and family, and survivors of all kinds. He now teaches meditation to help veterans everywhere.

Reconnected Value: Working through Moral Injury
Meaning-making based on Value is intrinsic to being human. No other can hold it for us.
Trauma is a profoundly human experience, happening to anyone regardless of gender, race, or profession. The degree of its effect is varied, the form it takes is most certainly tied to environmental and cultural context, and what is called into question are the deepest aspects of our lives. While trauma is often immediately connected in terms of mental health with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder…

What Have We Done: The Moral Injury of Our Longest Wars ~ David Wood (2016) ❤️❤️❤️❤️ David Wood's investigative book What Have We Done: The Moral Injury of Our Longest Wars makes use of his experience as a journalist, war veteran and conscientious objector to Vietnam to study the effects of moral injury on combat veterans. Wood posits that PTSD and Moral Injury are two distinct but equally damaging wounds that effect servicemen and women, but that they have been generally rolled together and ineffectively treated. Wood defines PTSD as your body's physical reaction to stress, and trauma, whilst Moral injury is an injury to your soul - or rather how you feel about something you have done. He argues that the hero worship returning soldiers receive from those at home worsens moral injury, as those suffering from it feel guilt and often self hatred for what they have done. For instance, one soldier storied in the book feels extreme guilt for having killed a child, although the child was armed and being told to shoot him. He believes that killing the child makes him a terrible human being, but within the context of war, it was considered the "right thing" to do. Wood studies the causes, symptoms and government responses to moral injury, along with treatment that is available, vs. What is not discussed. Peppered throughout with personal stories of his own, and those of other combat veterans, What Have We Done is a fine piece of investigative journalism, making the thesis accessible to readers. This is a book designed for anyone interested in psychology, mental health, combat stories, and the government treatment of combat personal.
