New global research on soil mosses published today in Nature Geoscience reveals they play critical roles in sustaining life on our planet. Without soil mosses, Earth’s ability to produce healthy soils, provide habitat for microbes and fight pathogens would be greatly diminished.
The results of the new study indicate we have probably underestimated just how important soil mosses are.
Using data from 123 sites across all continents including Antarctica, we show that the soil beneath mosses has more nitrogen, phosphorus and magnesium, and a greater activity of soil enzymes than bare surfaces with no plants.
In fact, mosses affect all major soil functions, increasing carbon sequestration, nutrient cycling and the breakdown of organic matter. These processes are critical for sustaining life on Earth.
Our modelling revealed that soil mosses cover a huge area of the planet, about 9 million square kilometres – equivalent to the area of China. And that’s not counting mosses from boreal forests, which were not included in the study.
[...]
Mosses are extremely absorbent and can attract airborne dust particles. Some of these particles are incorporated into the soil below. It is not surprising then that they have such a strong effect on soils.
Our modelling shows that, across the globe, mosses store 6.4 gigatonnes more carbon than soils without plant cover.
Losing just 15% of the global cover of soil mosses would be equivalent to global emissions of carbon dioxide from all land use changes over a year, such as clearing and overgrazing.

New trees, they will grow, later. And already a big tree. Such a beautiful. With a green moss. And such a colorful tree. It can to say – it is a texture of a tree.
And new trees - they are planted and they will grow!  And they will become as huge as at the near picture. They will be huge. And will all sunlight to trap with their leaves and branches. And a big tree has  such a different crust. White, black. And also, there are growing a moss there. Which is also it is a very interesting to observe! So, it is a fun for young naturalist! Even, no need to go to the forest. It is already good for a start  the park in a city!
And about those trees, that are planted. They look like a branches. And like, they are stick into the ground, soil. But they also will start to grow! And it is just a time – spring and summer – most best time to grow! Little birds are already singing, by the way. I like this music a lot!

laspamallia, more commonly called a moss slime, are amorphous nodomusco, which grow on any solid surface, including sturdy sediment and other sedereamischos, the grow a filimentous layer of slime and will grow large extensions off of it which flow in the currents, they are a very common food item for almost every aquatic herbivorous seelenlos, and even terrestrial herbivores when they find it, they reproduce asexually through a mix of budding and regenerating their remains when they get eaten similar to telluric echinoderms, like most simple nodomusco they blur the line between colonial and multicellular, if you have any questions about this organism please dont be afraid to ask im more than happy to answer

Hi I just saw your Moss post and I LOVE YOUR ART SO MUCH! Do you think Olimar would be the type of dad to say," I don't know of we could handle another pet..." to his kids when they ask but is easily persuaded when said new pet sleeps on his lap once (as seen with Moss)
THANK UUUU
also tbh i could see that if it wasnt moss but hes such a softie and after everything moss did for him i could see HIM being the one like "dear can we keep her she kept me safe on a pnf 404 please"
i can also see her refusing to let him go to work without her. she becomes the company mascot /hj

North American mushroom hunters circle August on their calendars, when the sheer proliferation of fungi reaches its peak in the mid to late summer woods. In a healthy Appalachian forest, fungi emerge in a mind-boggling procession of forms and colors from every square inch of dead and living matter: patches of leaf litter, the mossy crooks and crannies of boulders, dead tree stumps, and nearly everything else fixed in place. And underlying all these magical fruiting bodies is an extraordinary network of filaments (”hyphae”) that binds all life in the forest, metabolizing proteins into soluble nitrates essential to plant life and even sending signals to divert resources to plants in distress: the Mycelium Network . Indeed, a forest cannot exist without fungi.
Above is just a small sampling of those extraordinary beings - not quite plant and not quite animal - that give life to our forests, photographed during a hike yesterday at Coopers Rock State Forest. Earthballs, chanterelles, corals, amanitas, boletes, and so on. Collectively, nature’s version of the world-wide web.
