Monkey Wrench Episode 4 Fanart: Caught in Their Game (December 2024)

I absolutely LOVED the new Monkey Wrench episode! :D

HOLY COW, @zeurelart, @neatotito and the rest of the @monkey-wrench-series team did a phenomenal job this time around (please give them some love bc they absolutely deserve it)!

So it only made sense for me to finish this drawing (the idea for which had been mulling in my mind through the months MW episode 4 was being teased), which I enjoyed creating.

Below are the close-ups, as well as me rambling about the reasoning behind the symbolism here:

(SPOILER WARNING FOR MW EPISODE 4 FROM THIS POINT ON!)

Since I realised MW Episode 4 centred around the theme of games (literal and metaphorical), I couldn't not include references to games to associate with the following characters.

Shrike, Beebs, Agent K, and Kara = Arcade games

Campion Ajax = Chess

Tyneen = Video/computer games

Jawbone = Darts

Disco Head = Casino card games

Disco Head is the most self-explanatory (because ✨casino✨ - those cards were SO fun to render btw):

Episode 4 confirms that DH took over the Thicc Chicc Casino after Kara assassinated the previous owner, Chester McNevins, in Episode 1. It also implies DH worked with Agent K and Kara to take over the casino by "taking care" of Chester (that's just my theory ofc).

In Episode 4, Shrike is tempted by the pixel DH gave him. In a moment of cockiness, Shrike believes that he can succeed in his gambling spree from luck alone (DH even said "Today's your lucky day!" after giving him that pixel) - to which he was completely unsuccessful.

While not explicitly referenced in this drawing, a popular casino card game is Blackjack. A common misconception regarding Blackjack is that winning the game is purely determined by the luck of the players (i.e. Shrike being overconfident about his luck). In truth, there is a lot of skill and strategy required in order to be successful at the game (i.e. DH's charming persona and ability to play into Shrike's weaknesses to make him gamble all of his and Beeb's money).

Additionally, Blackjack is a game where players compete against the dealer, not each other. In my opinion, this idea makes sense (in a roundabout way, at least) for DH, given his dealings with three of the five antagonists in this episode: Agent K, Kara and Jawbone. All three have different motives to DH's, yet they work together and are connected through him.

2. Speaking of Jawbone, I wanted to reference two kinds of darts:

The game darts (which he plays in the scene at the bar)

Poison darts (which in my mind made sense given his hatred of Shrike, as seen in the green "cataclysm-poisoned saliva" and the sticker on the dart)

3. Initially, I wanted to reference a joke about "gamer rage" with Tyneen and her competitiveness.

But when watching the episode, I did not expect video games to actually be mentioned in relation to her (with Jawbone owing her a copy of the video game 'Marrow Inheritance').

4. Ah, yes: Campion Ajax (I always disliked him from the moment he was teased and, by the end of this episode, I wanted to replace all his steaks with rocks and send him on a one-way trip to the Marina Trench for trying to hurt Beebs >:[ ).

The reason why I gave Ajax a blue chess pawn was because that's how I felt he saw Beebs:

A feeble, inferior* pawn to potentially use to fulfil his selfish goals.

(*Ajax even called Beebs "inferior" when talking about his prosthetics, which... I felt so bad for poor Beebs having to endure the torment of this guy, and I'm SO glad he stood his ground and saw through his manipulation.)

5. For some reason, the idea of an arcade game fascinated me (our protagonists feeling trapped in both their insecurities and in a much bigger game, perhaps?), especially as a way to connect the antagonists to our protagonists' stories through colours (in the cabinet designs and the arcade buttons):

Yellow = Disco Head

Green = Jawbone

Red = Tyneen

Purple = Ajax

Dark blue = Kara

Black and white = Agent K

Another colour motif I included, which you can also see in the lighting and the background, is the pairing of turquoise blue (cyan) and magenta pink - which you can see in the lighting of the final battle scene.

Yes, I did intend to give Shrike and Beebs backgrounds that are different to their usual colour motifs.

Shrike (usually associated with red) = turquoise/blue

Beebs (usually associated with blue) = magenta/purple

(I'm sure you can guess why I also drew the glass screen cracked between Shrike and Beebs... given the ending.)

On top of that, you could argue that the antagonists in Episode 4 would be great as "arcade/video game bosses" who can have their own "boss fights" or merge into one big "final boss fight" (with different stages).

Also I think Agent K is cool (and would definitely make an awesome "final boss" alongside Kara) with his design and his vibes, enough said. :]

Made this comic inspired from this tidbit about Walrenians from a @monkey-wrench-series Q&A. Seriously tho I legit wonder if people assume Shrike could be that for Beebs, atleast those that do recognize what he is. I wonder if his own kind would assume that.

Scene: Basically if Shrike had stick around longer with Beebs & met Ajax too.

Ajax as Tlaloc

Tlaloc is the god of rain and lightning in Aztec mythology. He’s the Third Sun in the Legend of The Suns and the ruler of the first heaven, called Tlalocan.

Tlaloc’s iconography goes a long way, before the Aztecs. There have been representations of a rain god throughout Mesoamerica centuries before the Mexica came to be. What they all have in common is that they have goggle-like rings around their eyes and pronounced fangs.

These are Aztec vessels with the likeness of Tlaloc, all found in Museo Templo Mayor.

The most important element of Ajax’ design are his tusks. And they look an awful lot like Tlaloc’s two long fangs at the sides of his mouth

Aztec codex illustrations of Tlaloc usually have him with a full set of long fangs, and that could be referenced with the white of Ajax’ beard. He also has a subtle tooth gap that brings more attention to his teeth in general.

They also feature him with a mustache-shaped mouth. Ajax has a mustache, it’s not a cartoon villain swirly mustache like it appears in codices but it’s there.

As for the rings, Ajax doesn’t have rings around his eyes in the same way Tlaloc does, but he does have his pupils, and he has a set of rings around them when he goes berserk.

The two bands of the suit on Ajax’ shoulders might be there to look like the handles on a Tlaloc vessel?

And finally, when the Walrinian goes berserk his hair decides to start defying gravity, probably to imitate a headdress of quetzal feathers like Shrike and Beebs have!

Tlaloc is the Third Sun in the Legend of The Suns. A popular version of this myth is that his first wife, Xochiquetzal, was kidnapped by the unruly Tezcatlipoca. Tlaloc caused a drought because of this. When the humans of this era pleaded to Tlaloc for rain, he sent them a rain of fire, killing everyone. We can see that Tlaloc’s short temper matches with Ajax’.

(The few people that survived turned into birds, and the Thicc Chicc casino is bird themed. Another version, more specifically, says that the humans were turned into dogs, butterflies and turkeys. The server from the dinner scene looks enough like a turkey for me to put her here)

Tlaloc is also the ruler of his own realm, Tlalocan, “land of Tlaloc”. It is described as being plentiful in all kinds of food, in a state of eternal springtime. Ajax bosses the casino restaurant staff around, and they know him by name, meaning he goes there often. It would be fitting for the Tlaloc character to frequent a luxurious restaurant with “ritzy food”

As the first of the 13 heavens, Tlalocan was reserved for those who drowned, were struck by lightning, suffered from gout or leprosy, as well as the physically disabled and those with stunted growth.

Ajax keeps bringing attention to Beebs’ disabilities. He implies that he’s smaller than he should be for Walrinian standards, he points out that he’s “missing” his tusks, and he straight up looks at his prosthetics and calls him inferior. Despite the hatred that Ajax is clearly showing, Beebs fits the criteria for being destined for Tlalocan, so it’d make sense that he brings him to the restaurant.

But that’s not all. The reason why people with stunted growth would go to Tlalocan was because they were thought to be associated with his servants. Tlaloc has servants called Tlaloque, “small Tlalocs”, and as their name implies, these look like mini versions of the rain god.

And what better for Ajax as Tlaloc than to have a smaller version of himself as his servant!

Monkey Wrench Romantic Head Cannons

Shrike:

First things first, he definitely calls you Mi Amor. He might use other nicknames here and there but that’s the main one.

He is absolutely touch starved and loves to cuddle. He will throw a fit if you refuse to cuddle.

Takes you to an arcade for a date just so he can show off on a shooting game. If you decide to give the shooting game a try yourself he will “correct” your form by placing his hands on yours to adjust their placement. He does this to try and fluster you with how close he is.

This squid is a massive flirt and will use any and all pick up lines on you. Gets incredibly flustered when you flirt back .

Stores your favorite snacks in his crystal so he can surprise you with them.

Nervous about PDA at first but once he is comfortable he will always be touching you in some way. Whether it be holding your hand or keeping an arm around your waist, he has to be touching you. 

Jealousy level is about a 7/10. He gets jealous easily but gets over it quickly if you buy him some pizza.

Buy him anything Bandito related or Terran related he will be all over for the next week. You will get smothered with kisses and cuddles. 

Not super experienced when it comes to dating, kissing or anything like that. There are a few things you have to explain to him.

Drives you around in The Bucket to show it off. Definitely left Beebs behind once when doing this.

Likes to buy you gifts when he can. It’s usually some kind of nicknack that made him think of you.

Will teach you Spanish if you ask. Laughs at you when you pronounce something wrong.

Loves to see you wearing his jacket. Fawns over how cute you are when he sees it on you.

Has a picture of you asleep against him as his lock screen.

He is also a huge tease. Teasing him back will only egg him on.

If your species is taller than him he will climb you like a tree so he can sit on your shoulders and will constantly be asking you to carry him.

Trise to cook for you and burns it. You go get pizza to cheer him up.

Terran movie nights every week.

Beebs:

His nickname for you is Babe or Baby. 

Also touch starved and loves to cuddle. He won’t make much of a fuss if you refuse but he will sulk a bit to try to make you change your mind.

Loves to sing and play his guitar for you. He loves it when you sing with him. Your duets are beautiful.

Writes you love songs.

Cooks your favorite meals for you

Picks you up at random to show off his strength. If this flusters you he will do it more.

Along with picking you up he likes to carry you around.

Lets you do his hair and in turn does yours.

His hair is super soft.

Now Walrinians have a specific way of courting. Beebs doesn’t follow this exactly but you do get a very sweet letter from him, asking if you would like to date him. This comes with a set of bracelets known as courting cuffs. If you choose to wear them then you have accepted his courting. Expect to get absolutely smothered with kisses and cuddles if you accept.

If you accept his courting you will also receive an influx of gifts. These will range from hair accessories to clothes to snacks. Anything that he thinks you will like he will buy for you.

Absolutely melts when you wear one of his shirts. You're just so small and his shirt is basically a dress on you. 

His jealousy level is about 5/10. Doesn’t get jealous easily, but he does get very protective. 

Beebs is going to be naturally protective of you. It’s in his nature to protect you from anything and everything.

Very flirtatious when in private. He loves seeing you blush and stutter as he compliments you and tells you how much he loves you. Gets flustered if you flirt back.

Not too much of a PDA guy at first as well. Will hold your hand in public if you ask. Once he is comfortable he carries you everywhere.

Shows you how his prosthetics work so you can help him out in a pinch.

Gives some of the best hugs.

He is a traveling heater, which is good when you're out in the cold of space, but when you're parked on a hot planet? Not as much

Doesn’t sleep much but will lay down with you if you want to sleep next to him.

Suggests books to you and likes to talk about them with you if you read them. Loves to get book suggestions from you.

Super supportive. If it is something that makes you happy he will support you in any way he can.

Teaches you hand to hand combat so you can protect yourself. He knows he’s not always around and he wants you to be safe.

Likes to roughhouse with you. He is careful of his strength when you two do this. He will usually initiate this.

Again, he LOVES to cuddle and will hold you any chance he gets.

Slow dances with you to classical music. Sometimes these dances are just you and him holding one another and swaying softly to the music.

Has more experience in the dating game than Shrike.

Also a big tease. Likes it when you try to tease back.

Semi experienced kisser. Still needs work but isn’t as bad as Shrike.

Fusses over you when you get any kind of injury. You could hit your elbow on something and he will be by your side immediately with an ice pack.

Jawbone:

His nickname for you is Sugar Skull.

Jealousy level 8/10. Gets jealous very easily and won’t stop pouting about it for a few Days.

Not very cuddly just because he knows it's uncomfortable for you. If you really want to cuddle with him, he will stuff pillows inside of himself and cover himself in blankets so you're comfortable. 

Takes you on joy rides on his bike 

Jawbone flirts more than both Shrike and Beebs combined. He thinks it's adorable when you flirt back.

You asked if you could cook a hotdog on his hair and he immediately refused. Eventually gave in and let you do it when you pouted about it.

He cannot say no to you when you give him puppy dog eyes. He is weak to them and he knows it.

Constant PDA. He wants everyone to know that you are his and his alone.

Aggressive in public but a huge softy in private. 

Likes to play video games with you. If you beat him he will be huffy about it till you kiss him.

Is surprisingly warm.

Surprises you with romantic dates every once in a while.

Bites you just to see your reaction.

Takes you to dangerous planets to show off and save you. If you do get hurt during one of these trips he stops doing them.

Likes to show you off to other pirates, saying how lucky he is to have found you.

After letting you cook a Hotdog on his hair he lets you toast Marshmallows on it too.

Likes to compare hand sizes and teases you about how small you are compared to him.

Like Shrike, Jawbone also will buy you little trinkets.

Surprisingly good kisser for someone who has no lips.

Likes to sing for you like Beebs does, but his songs are a tad bit more aggressive.

Also writes you love songs.

Makes you an official member of his crew.

You decided to call him Captain in public once when you found out you were a part of his crew. Everyone watched as his brain short circuited. Once he recovers he tells you that you have to call him that from now on.

You managed to get a hold of his jacket(shirt??) and wear it once. You hid when you heard him yelling your name while he was looking for it. He couldn’t find you for a few hours, but once he did find you, you were sound asleep with it on. He has that picture saved as his phone background.

Has so many pictures of you on his phone. He takes them when you're not looking.

He will carry you over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes if you refuse to go somewhere with him. 

Also takes you out to an arcade. Tries to win you something and ends up wasting all his tokens on that one thing.

Disco Head: 

His nickname for you is Dear, Dearie or Honey.

Jealousy level is about 6/10. Does get jealous but knows how to hide it from you.

Also constant PDA, almost as much as Jawbone. Almost.

Definitely spoils you with gifts, fancy clothes, and romantic dates. He wants you to feel special and does everything in his power to make that happen.

Would buy you the whole galaxy if he could. 

Names a whole section of the casino after you.

Takes you out on amazing trips around the galaxy. We are talking beachfront hotels, 5 star restaurants, the whole shebang. 

Buys you a cape that matches his.

Caught you flaunting around the penthouse you two share and acting like him in one of his suits. Has the whole thing on video and still teases you about it to this day. He thought it was adorable though.

Also likes to show you off while walking around the casino. 

Brags about how cute you are.

Leaves his jacket out somewhere in hopes that you will wear it again.

Since he can't kiss you normally he will give you Eskimo kisses.

Not super cuddly simply because he doesn't enjoy it that much.

You get at the least three gifts a day.

Buys you a little pet to keep you company while he is busy working.

Constantly flirting with you. Flirting back eggs him on.

Can carry you but doesn’t do it often because it takes a lot out of him

Gossips with you about people in the casino. You know so much more than you should. In turn, you gossip with him about your friends/work drama.

Two words: Spa days. This is when you two usually gossip and spill tea that you know you shouldn’t. You both also gossip with the spa workers.

You want something that is illegal to have? He has his connections and will get it for you as soon as he can.

You two take a yoga class together.

He loves to take you dancing. If you can’t dance then he will teach you.

Takes you out on roller skating dates a lot too. If you can’t skate he will teach you. When you are at the roller rink he will show off. Does things like dance skating and other kinds of tricks.

Takes you out on surprise picnics. Found a nice little spot in a park on a tropical planet not too far away from the casino.

I’ll say this again. He. Will. Spoil. You. You cannot stop him.

You get some of the best princes treatment from DH. He will buy you a tiara if you ask.

Armstrong:

His nickname for you is Sweetheart.

Jealousy level is also a 6/10 but he can’t hide it as well as DH can.

Also likes to spoil you as much as he can. It's usually some kind of jewelry that he buys for you or something that he thinks will look good on you.

Surprisingly cuddly. Likes to lay on top of you so he can hear your heartbeat.

Falls asleep during cuddle sessions. Your breathing and heartbeat just lull him to sleep every time.

This usually makes you fall asleep too. 

Likes it when you play with his hair. This will also put him to sleep so be careful with that. (He works hard and is always just a bit eepy)

Not much of a PDA person but he will hold your hand in public. Is much more touchy in private.

Huge flirt. Constantly flirting. He will not stop, he cannot stop.

Very good at kissing. Knows just how to make you melt in his hands.

Cooks for you when he has the time.

Movie nights on the weekends. Gets your favorite snacks for these.

Loves taking you out to fancy restaurants so he can see you dressed up in a fancy outfit.

Has walked up to you in his LAW outfit and “Arrested” you for stealing. The thing you got caught stealing? His heart. He does this at least twice a week.

Also takes you on trips but not as often as DH does. The places you visit with Armstrong are smaller tourist attractions with quaint little hotels that treat you just right.

Remember how I said he can make you melt in his hands when he kisses you? Yeah he can also make you melt with one of the best back massages you've ever had. He knows just how to work the knots out of your back and shoulders.

Shows you his hair care routine so your hair can be just as soft as his.

Lets you do his hair like Beebs does.

He lets you pick out his outfits. He usually wears them unless you pick something that looks incredibly bad on him.

DH has tried to flirt with you before and ended up regretting it when Armstrong found out. Armstrong refused to talk to DH for two weeks till DH apologized and said he wouldn’t do it again. During those two weeks Armstrong was much more touchy than he usually is.

Likes to watch you dance. Even if you can’t dance, he still likes to watch. You just look so free when you dance like no one is watching. (You usually don’t notice him when he does this)

You two have some of the most sarcastic conversations.

Ajax:

His nickname for you is Darling.

Jealousy level is 10/10. Gets jealous very easily and will pick a fight with whoever has your attention at the moment.

If you thought Beebs was cuddly, wait till you're with Ajax. This Walrinian is a cuddle monster. You will be cuddling late into the day before you can even get up to get ready.

Very good kisser. He knows what he is doing.

Like Beebs, Ajax will carry you around everywhere. You have no say in the matter.

You get princess treatment that is better than DH’s. Ajax has bought you ball gowns/fancy suits  that make you feel like you should be in a Disney movie.

Ajax is 10x more protective than Beebs is. If he sees anything within 10 feet of you that looks shady or unsafe he will toss you over his shoulder and take you home. It doesn’t matter what you are doing at the time, you're going home where you will be safe.

He also fusses over you when you get hurt. Has taken you to the hospital for a simple paper cut and demanded it be checked for infections.

Ajax follows Walirinan courting rituals more than Beebs does. You get a similar letter and a beautiful set of gold courting cuffs. 

If you accept, you won’t be leaving his side for the next month. Wherever he goes you go and vice versa. He wants to have you as close as possible.

Is absolutely weak to seeing you dressed up all nice. If you want something out of him, wear one of the fancy outfits he bought you. He won’t be able to focus on what you're saying because he will be too focused on just how good you look.

He loves to dress you up like you're a little doll. You have a massive wardrobe because of this.

Weekly trips around the galaxy. Always takes you somewhere new. Like DH these trips have 5 star restaurants, top tear hotels and all the best tourist stops.

You go to so many balls and galas that you have lost count at this point. 

100% shows you off to anyone and everyone.

Will buy you whatever you want, whenever you want it. He is basically your sugar daddy.

Heaven forbid anyone makes you cry. He will focus on taking care of you and making you feel better first. You are his number one priority. However, when he does find who upset you he will make sure this person never bothers you again.

Ajax is also a traveling heater, more so than Beebs. This is very helpful for you because the Walrinian home planet is a frozen tundra. His warmth makes cuddles with him amazing.

Likes it when you lay on top of him. You're like a little weighted stuffed animal to him.

He will fall in love all over again if he sees you hold your own in a fight.

If he does see that you can hold your own in a fight he will start roughhousing with you the same way Beebs does. 

Careful with you when you two roughhouse.

lN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT, WITH A cigarette in hand while a glass of whiskey on the other, the burning flame under the chimney entertained the freshly arrived soldier waiting for his wife.

The entrance croaked open summoning a beautiful lady who seemed to be hazy from her previous in took of alcohol. There was a frustrated frown on her face as she tries her best to take off her heels while closing the door.

"Where have you been, wife?" The husband's familiar voice stole her attention. Once she looked up and realized it was her husband who she has been dying to see for weeks, a smile instantly crept up on her cherry tinted lips.

"Oh my, you're home!" She couldn't help but drop everything and run into his arms. Squealing in excitement of feeling him in her arms again.

This happens every single time he comes home. He should be used to it by now. But he isn't. That wave of warmth inside him still activates whenever she does this. So eager to hold him, see him, smiling so brightly as if he was her world, her home, her salvatore.

He couldn't help but close his eyes as their body met. Their body exchanging heat was a comfort they've always missed. As she lock his neck around her arms, her hands crawling their way onto his hair on its own, his arms finding her back to pull her close.

"I missed you."

She smiled and marked a warm kiss on his cheek. "I missed you more, Si."

Simon always bring his cold and stoic stance from work, but he built a specific one for the cause of her gone missing when he arrived. But she was a devil woman that with just one kiss, one pet name, one word, his walls were gone melting.

Her magic curled a tiny smile on his rosy lips. Her shiny eyes staring back at him burning his guard down little by little. He tucked a string of hazel hair behind her ear. Before turning his gaze on the shoes she left on the ground.

"Someone's been out, hm?"

She exhaled as she settled in his lap and lean on his chest. "Yeah, Nat and I were out for a bit." She looked up to meet his eyes through her lashes.

"I'm sorry I wasn't here when you got home." He could truly see that she was sorry through her voice and expression. Her lips were slightly turning into a pout and her eyes were gleaming from the fire. She was precious to look at.

Before he could answer, she cut him off by placing a kiss on his lips, his eyes closing and deeply exhaling just as her fingers run through his hair. He was supposed to be cold but he was a sucker for her touch and affection.

As they pulled in synch, he tried to focus. But her intoxicating scent wasn't helping. He tried to circle back on his concern. He was a soldier damn it. Luckily, when her scent came laced with alcohol, he succeeded.

"Where have you been, luv?"

"Nat brought us in a club." She studied his face, from his short hair, dark brows, little scars that she covers with kisses, to his nose and sexy lips. She avoided his eyes. He was staring at her as if they were in an interrogation.

"Got drunk clubbing, hm?" She helped him put his bourbon aside before leaning back on his warm hard chest. Wrapping his free arm around her waist on her own to play with his fingers, another way of avoiding his intimidating gaze.

"Just a little." She murmured. His brows were slightly meeting as he watch her curl in his lap, her adorableness tugging a tiny smile on his lips.

"Did someone try to flirt with my beautiful princess?" He drew a blush on her cheeks and an adorable scowl.

"No. Even if there was, I wouldn't let them." There was a hint of smug in her delivery that made him chuckle.

"Wouldn't let them, huh?" He leaned down on her and caressed the side of her face to make her meet his eyes.

"And if I try to flirt with you?" Their close proximity was making her heart beat fast. She became nervous. As if they weren't married for years.

"My clothes will disappear." She said with pure honesty that it made him grin and scoff a laugh.

He smirked and pulled her closer, his big hands brushing up and down her back, pulling her to leave a kiss on her forehead. "I love you." She mumbled, eyes shut from his rare display of affection.

"Love' you so fuckin' much." He mumbled, lids down while inhaling her scent that only sensed like home. She was the only thing that could calm his whole system down. What ever it is that he did to deserve her must've been something divine.

She has never felt safer anywhere else than in his arms. His was the only cage she was more than willing to be chained forever.

They stayed glued together on the couch for a while. Listening to the rustling flame, finishing his cigarette while she fought her heavy lids putting her down to sleep. It was a peace Simon deserved after a draining mission. The dancing flame under the bricks was the only entertainment around, her head tucked under his chin made her hair close to his face filling his nose with the scent of her shampoo, while she inhaled his smell, the manly scent she misses so much.

They later on decided to prepare for bed, both too tired to eat. Their tangled picture on the couch previously was recreated on their bed. "How was the mission?" She mumbled while watching his chest rise and fall.

"Draining." He replied, the vibration of his chest and his steady heart beat making her feel secured.

"You must be tired." She brushed her palm on his chest. His muscles slowly relaxing as he lets her. Letting her brush the tension and stress from work away.

He sighed. "Just glad to be home with you."

"Me too. It's always lonely without you here."

"I know." He tucks away her hair softly, touching her carefully as if she was delicately fragile.

"I hate leaving you. Always." A sketch of furrowed brows was on his face as he recall every moment of receiving a call for deployment, when he leaves while she's peacefully asleep, or when she tries her best to hold back tears when she deliver him away to the door.

"I hate that you leave me either." She chuckles her pain away.

He carries her up to sit her on his lap. "I don't like you being alone here either." He explains as he tucks more hair away, watching her bare face stare back at him. "Hate it knowing you're all by yourself in this empty house. Makes me fuckin' worried."

"Hmm.. I know. It always worry me, thinking if you'll ever even come back." She confessed, looking down on her fingers. Then looking back up to meet his brown eyes when courage arrived.

"Thank you for always coming back home to me, Simon." Her eyes fluttered, looking right into his eyes as she appreciates him. He was so fucking confuse how he managed to have a woman like her marry him. Meaning those words to her heart as if he deserved someone to worry and wait for him to come back, not to die in the battlefield of war.

"I'll never stop coming back to you, for as long as I can. You're my whole world, love. You don't know how much I'm willing to do anything for you."

"I love you so much." He whispered to her as he closed the gap between their faces. Capturing her lips and letting them linger against each other before slowly pulling away. "I love you more."

"Impossible." He says as he lay them down, letting her nuzzle into his embrace like a kitten under the sheets.

He pulls her even closer, not wanting to leave any spaces between their bodies before settling down and lean on her shoulders to rain them with soft kisses. She felt so safe yet so fragile against him. His warmth replacing the cold bed she forces herself to sleep on before, now drives her to slumber easier than blinking.

[If you haven’t already noticed, I just really like talking about how much I love this series.

I’m not sure what it is about this particular shot of the first episode, but this one is what really got me in.

We have a build up to the plot of the first episode, where we’re introduced to the continuing plot itself of the series, but a build up to the introduction of the main characters. We’re given a glimpse of who Shrike and Beebs are, not just based on their icon alone, but as who they are based on the information given along with them. As I have said many times, I really love MW and its details. Including this shot.

We’re told here the difference between Shrike and Beebs. We’re given a dose of who they are as well of how the two work together. Which is something I would really like to talk about another time.]

[I think EP 4 has pushed the understanding of Shrike’s and Beeb’s relationship and their character and well, the overall story. Shrike is considered a loser to well, majority of the people who know him. We also know that Shrike is quick to make decisions- usually not good ones and seems to “get by” by either luck or, having Beebs with him. Which is why Shrike’s description of being a low threat and easier target to take out before Beebs, makes sense. It just gives you an idea how little Shrike is considered to others, enemies or rivals. Even if Shrike did make Kara look like a fool at the end of the first EP- it was really by chance- luck really. I will say it is funny how it’s mentions he is awful with close range- despite doing a great job in EP 2 doing close range sword fighting- guess the only times cartoons did save him.]

[Then you have Beebs, or Bulldog Browns is the first name given. I always look back at this shot for Beebs. Because even before EP 4, we’re told he’s a threat- which is odd as before EP 4, we’re really only shown a more chill side of Beebs. I know in EP 3 though, we are given a taste of how Beebs could potentially be dangerous, or well, he has a limit. Even so, EP 4 is when we really start to get a taste of how much of a threat Beebs could be. Not just from what we saw from Ajax too and what Ricket said, how Beeb’s kinds can be “a lot,” but how Beebs can haul weight around with no problem. Opening closed doors with his own strength and like Ajax, has his eyes light up red as well when he is frustrated. So the 9/10 threat makes a lot of sense now. I remember when I first saw that, I was a bit surprised? He doesn’t seem like the type who would hurt a fly? Now seeing EP 4, makes you wonder how much he can handle before he loses it? Its clear though, that Beebs is seen as a threat, not just species alone, but also seems to taken more seriously compared to Shrike, he is set up in the team to be the “straight man,” the middle guy, really the one to well, solve all the problems. Even in his little description, it says that you might have an easier time with Beebs if you take out Shrike, who really is not. Taken seriously.

Also Shrike being 6”3’ and Beebs being 8”11’? I love ridiculous heights for characters. These two are tall, man- even Shrike who appears “short” compared to others.

I’m not much of a theorist or type to create headcanons, I just really like talking about what I love about a series. And what I love about this shot? The set up. We’re introduced to the characters, a glimpse about them and watch the development, and the overall plot itself.

Spoilers for mw episode 4!!!

from what I’ve gathered so far the walranians seem to be have a heavily respect and honor based culture. Beebs asking to leave multiple times and seeming kind of trapped when talking to Ajax because Ajax is older and higher ranking socially than him. When he finally does get fed up with Ajax’s cruel remarks and leaves Ajax takes it as a personal insult and attacks him. When beebs fights back Ajax is shocked and enraged that beebs hit him, extra emphasis on “*YOU* hit ME???” Which makes me think that it’s acceptable for those of higher rank to discipline those lower than themselves but it’s a incredible insult if they fight back.

He also calls beebs a “aberrant” probably referring to beebs small size and lack of tusks which Ajax also seems to imply he got from his mothers side of the family which is interesting

Jawbone as Mictlantecuhtli

Mictlantecuhtli, “Lord of Mictlan”, is the lord of the land of the dead in Aztec mythology. 

Jawbone is Mictlantecuhtli because of his very relevant character design, and because his most important myth is recreated in his introductory episode.

First off, Mictlantecuhtli is easy to identify because he will almost always be represented as a skeleton. Jawbone is an Osteon, a species of skeleton aliens (? as far as we know) His jacket has a window showing his ribcage, just like Mictlantecuhtli also has his ribcage exposed most of the time.

He might also be replicating the pose of the Mictlantecuhtli statue in Museo Templo Mayor in a couple of instances during ep4

Mictlantecuhtli is a skeleton because he’s a god representative of death. If being bones isn’t enough, Jawbone wears all black and carries a scythe with him, just like the grim reaper, a famous Western depiction of death. Yes, the scythe and his pirate group name “Scythelord” are references to his voice actor, but they also add onto the list of Jawbone’s connection with the theme of death. He is called a “Plague Walker” because he goes to the Quarantine Zone, associated in this universe with infection and death.

The Quarantine Zone might as well be Monkey Wrench’s version of Mictlan, the Aztec underworld!

One last bit of iconography I wanna talk about before the bone myth is his tongue. There are several illustrations of Mictlantecuhtli sticking his tongue out in codices, as well as the disk of Mictlantecuhtli in the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City

And like some of the fandom has joked about already, Jawbone has a habit of sticking his tongue out. Even his plushie is doing it!!

Speaking of! It was a common ritual for the Mexica to pierce their ears and their tongues to offer their blood to the gods, including Mictlantecuhtli. JB is only licking this dart here but I felt that putting a pointy object to his tongue looked too suspicious not to add it.

Monkey Wrench has been subtly recreating some of the Aztec myths, but the thing is that in some cases, the characters change their roles to fit somebody else’s myth. Let me explain.

Before the start of the fifth era, Quetzalcoatl went down to Mictlan to retrieve the bones of the previous generation of humans. There he met Mictlantecuhtli and Mictecacihuatl, Lord and Lady of the land of the dead. 

When Quetzalcoatl asked for the bones, Mictlantecuhtli agreed to give them to him, if he could go around his realm four times blowing on a conch shell trumpet (tecciztli). This was a trick, the shell didn’t have any holes to blow into. Quetzalcoatl noticed this, he called worms to make holes into the shell, and he called bees to get inside the shell and buzz to make noise.

Seeing he completed his request, Mictlantecuhtli had no other choice but to let him go with the bones. But as he was leaving, Mictlantecuhtli ordered his servants to dig a pit for the Feathered Serpent to fall into. In the fall, Quetzalcoatl dropped the sacred bones and they broke.

This myth is reenacted in Tyneen and Jawbone’s side plot. In this case, Tyneen takes the role of Quetzalcoatl. 

Tyneen meets Jawbone in the casino to get back the video game he borrowed from her. He is reluctant to give it back, until she forces him to

Then, when she and Ricket are leaving, Beebs pushes Tyneen making her drop the game, and Ajax storms in and Ricket falls apart. Ricket’s bones fall to the ground, and the game that Jawbone gave to her breaks.

The part where the bones fall is replicated with Ricket's own bones, and the part where they break is represented by the (BONE THEMED) video game.

Also, before Tyneen goes to the bar she goes to the weevils to get her shackles off. The weevils’ workshop is fully decorated with hexagons on the walls, doors and furniture, making it look like a beehive.

This could be a nod to the bees that helped Quetzalcoatl in the same story.

Ricket himself might be a reference to this very myth? Rickety, from “rickety bones”, means something that is unstable and likely to break, mirroring the fate of the bones in the legend. But I’m still not sure about him.

Fun fact, these bones are supposed to be ours, the bones of the current generation. Since they come from the previous era, you could say we inherited them. And the game is called “Marrow Inheritance”!

Beebs Theory

Ok so I have a theory for Beebs. As I was watching Ep 4 for the thousandth time, I noticed a moment where it almost looks like Beebs is pulling rank against Ajax so he can leave.

Right here. The moment we see Beebs realize that if he keeps trying to talk nice to Ajax, he won't get anywhere.

And then here, This is where it looks like Beebs is pulling rank. Beebs is brushing Ajax off like it's nothing. This makes me think House Baraak has a higher standing than House Ajax. Even though Beebs is much smaller than Ajax, Beebs can get away with brushing Ajax off simply because of his house statis.

As Ajax goes on we can see Beebs switches from the usual kind Walrinian we know, to a cold, ruthless Walrinian who is fed up with the conversation. He looks more annoyed than Ajax did when Beebs asked to leave in the first place. That is some of the most intense code switching I have ever seen a character do.

In conclusion, Beebs came from from a high standing house that could basically be considered royalty. But due to whatever happened in the passed he has become the disgraced prince of his kind.
