(All I Have to Do is) Dream: Why The Sandman is Important To Me

My first encounter with the works of Neil Gaiman was in 2009 when I sat in a dark theater and was delighted by the Henry Selick adaptation of Gaiman’s Coraline. I immediately sought out a copy of the book and was entranced by his writing, as it was exactly the kind of fantasy writing I enjoyed reading, mixing the magic and wonder of the real world with that of a fantastical world that could only exist in imagination. I was hooked, and soon I had also collected American Gods, Anansi Boys, and several of his short stories. This is when I first became aware of The Sandman, but I wouldn’t actually read it until a few years later when I was in film school. I was roaming the school library for some good reading material, and they had a large collection of the trade paperbacks of each volume of Sandman. I had never been a huge comic book person despite enjoying superheroes on television and film, but Neil’s name meant It was at least worth a look. I tore through each volume (although I admit I got a tad impatient and skipped some of the stand-alone tales to finish the full arc of the story, something I have remedied on subsequent re-reads). For my senior thesis in film school, I focused on a story about dreams and traveling through them, and to say this isn’t influenced by Sandman would be an outright lie. I had written some of the basics before I read the whole of Sandman, but it really took shape when I wanted to tell my own story set in dreams. I even got to discuss it with Neil Gaiman himself when I had the great fortune to spend an evening with him and his wife. He gave me great advice to tell my story, and very kindly signed my favorite volume of Sandman, A Game of You, and his signature had the wonderful advice to “Dream Dangerously” which I have tried my best to do ever since. Throughout my time in Film School I dreamed of possibly getting to adapt Sandman for HBO or some similar television network someday, and while that has not come to pass, I was so thankful for it being a part of my education. 

Several years passed, I had graduated, moved to Florida and had spent many years working at a certain Haunted Mansion in a certain theme park, and Sandman still stuck with me. I would go back and reread my favorite bits over and over again, and was excited when they were working on a film adaptation with Joseph Gordon-Levitt involved,and then even more excited when Netflix announced they were making a series out of the show, which I always felt was the best way to adapt the material.

And then my life fell apart. 2019 came into my life like a force of nature, destroying as much as it could. I wound up in the hospital multiple times and discovered that my body was basically destroying itself after I let it fall into disrepair due to a severe bout of depression. Between this and being stuck indoors during the pandemic, it got worse, and I ended up having to leave my job, which lost me not only a place I loved working for but friends too. I started to feel very alone. I wound up back in the hospital and physical rehab. I had to move out of an apartment that had been home for years, into a strange new home with a strange new roommate, and the loneliness continued to mount. I was in constant pain, and often, the only real voice I had to speak to was the one in my head, which was quickly becoming a much darker voice than it had ever been before. I used to tell myself I’d never consider suicide, it just wasn’t my style, but in the dark of lonely nights, trapped in a room by myself, I did. I thought about how perhaps it would just be better if I was no longer here, and that dark voice getting so much stronger than I ever imagined it could. I had one thing I was looking forward to…The Sandman adaptation. It feels silly to say that a television show was the only thing I had to look forward to, but it’s true. I found a small group of fans on Twitter and they were so kind and welcoming to an older guy who just wanted to watch his favorite story become a show. To help with the long wait and anticipation I finally sat down and listened to the Audible audiobook adaptation of The Sandman, which I had been avoiding as I typically have a hard time with audiobooks, but once I listened, I found myself discovering the magic of the world of The Sandman in a new way, and it felt as if for the first time. As I sat in my bed, struggling with my pain and health, I could make all that go away by putting my headphones on, and listening to Dream of the Endless go on his journeys.

When I first read the comics, one of the one-off short stories on my first read-through that didn’t quite click with me was Facade, a story that features Death meeting a woman named Urania Blackwell (Element Girl for comic savvy folk) who was cursed to be made of different elements and it was slowly destroying her life and mental state. As I listened to the Audible version of this story, it suddenly became real. A woman who can barely leave her apartment due to her condition, her only real companion being a weekly phone call, and a desire, but inability, to kill herself. I found myself silently sobbing as Urania spoke with Death about her life being miserable. I then began to imagine my conversation with Death, the kind goth woman who Gaiman imagined to whisk people from this life to whatever comes next with kindness and a smile. I realized that Sandman had saved me. The dark voice started to go quiet in my mind. 

I admit, I still struggle with these thoughts sometimes, and I am still finding my way back to what I sometimes refer to as “normal” but it has been so helpful to have this world to escape to, to help make sense of my reality. It reminded me how simple it is to go somewhere special, and reminded me that all I have to do is dream. 

Thanks to Neil Gaiman (@neil-gaiman), Sam Keith, Mike Dringenberg, and all the artists who have worked on Sandman over the years. As you have done so to many hundreds of thousands of readers before me, you inspired me. You inspired me in 2012, and then you saved me in 2022. I can’t thank you enough and I can’t wait to watch the entirety of the new show and find myself lost in that world yet again.

Okay y'all, I see a lot of people listing off various t-word scenes in movies/books, yet they always somehow manage to leave out my favorites?? Like does nobody know they exist or something?

Well anyway. I'm here to fix that.

There is a really good one in Love Comes Softly (the movie, idk if it's the same in the book), and I can't give a timestamp cause I haven't watched it in forever, but it's after Marty has had her baby. A short chase scene, then the magic happens.

The Vow, and oml this movie is a gold mine. A literal. Gold mine. The best ones happen within the first fifteen - twenty minutes (if I'm remembering correctly), and last several seconds. Here's a mind blower - it is openly said that Paige (the girl that receives it) likes to be tickled, so her husband does it often. I was so happy, even though my mom was in the same room, like I could barely contain the euphoric laughs I wanted to release while watching it.

Liar Liar. Yes, the Jim Carrey movie. There's a short one at some point in the beginning (again, haven't watched it in years but these scenes stay in my memory), in which a father pulls out "The Claw" and gives his son a good laugh, and right before the credits roll, it's heavily implied that tickling is happening behind the walls of the house we can no longer see.

RV, and this is pretty similar to Liar Liar, in which case a dad is shown tickling his kid - a little girl - this time. If I recall, it doesn't last more than a couple of seconds, but still cute all the same.

Pixar - A Bug's Life, Toy Story, Up, Inside Out, Ratatouille, Cars 2. If I'm leaving any out, please let me know. Most of these are brief (what one would probably expect) but I wrote them down anyway.

Disney - Jungle Book, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid 3, Alice In Wonderland, Lilo & Stitch, Tarzan 1 and 2, The Rescuers: Down Under, Bridge To Terabithia, etc. This kinda bums me out, as Disney often included tickle scenes in their movies back then, but they don't anymore. At least we have nice ones to look back on!

Annihilation, and this is honestly one of my all-time favorites. There's only one, from what I remember, but it's so good! Basically Natalie Portman and her hubby are laying in bed together, and (I think?) she says some sassy remark and it prompts him to tickle her.

Coraline. So the producers actually included this scene in the trailer, and I was probably eleven the first time I saw it. The moment I did, I was urging my family "yeah, it looks like a good movie! Let's watch it!" so we did. It was awesome. Also, I will shamelessly admit that I want my own Snap Dragons.

My Little Pony. Okay, I know this isn't a movie or book, but it's still worth mentioning, most notably  "The Magic Duel", "Just For Sidekicks", and "It's About Time".

Ride the Wind by Lucia St. Claire Robinson. This book is absolutely full of beautiful tickle scenes, and if you're willing to deal with the tragedy and brutal nature of its characters' culture, you will be pleasantly surprised. My favorite one happens over the halfway mark, but there are plenty to keep you satisfied 'til then :) Just keep in mind that this story is not a light-hearted one, so if you decide to read it, prepare to sob. A lot.

Dragon Tails. This is another children's show that would showcase tickling a lot. In every other episode, I'd say - there was even one about actual tickle monsters, and one that had a flower that tickled you, so that was a gleeful time for my kid self.

This one is exceedingly random and I swear I just remember tidbits because I was like four, but there is a short scene in ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Movie’. I literally have no clue when, or where, or who it happens to, but I know it does happen. That was like half the reason I was so obsessed with that movie when I was little XD

Be More Chill, the recording with the original cast. It’s like a two-second scene but I swear it looks like Michael reaches over and tickles Jeremy, hence why the latter reels away the way he does. I’m unconvinced it’s anything less than that, and maybe that’s just cause I’m obsessed with the idea of Michael being a super physically affectionate (yet still mischievous) lil’ bean, but I digress. This is the video, and the timestamp is roughly 26:12. 

Little Monsters. Despite how stupid this movie may be, it was still a large portion of my childhood, and I recently went back and watched it. I rediscovered a very solid tickle scene that I somehow never recalled between Brian and his father. It was very cute and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s around the first half, I think? When Brian stays in Eric’s room the first time.

These are all I can think of at the moment, though I will probably be adding more eventually! It just annoyed me how so many great scenes were being missed out on because nobody remembered/knew about them. So here they are! I hope I informed you~

🍁🍂🍁🍂Alright, since its mid-September, its time for my annual spooky movie reccomedation list! I include ratings, and I can include trigger warnings for any of these films upon request as well! I'm also looking for horror movies to watch myself, so feel free to comment/ask any as well!! So, here we go, in no particular order...🍁🍂🍁🍂

Fantasy/sci-fi horror:

The Thing 1982 [R]: A group of scientists find a shapeshifting alien underneath the ice in Antarctica, and they just survive as it imitates them. Trust no one. The Thing is one of my favorite movies in general. Its scary, retro, and the special effects are insane. It reminds me of classic Lovecraft, but better. Very terrifying. 10/10

Pan's Labyrinth 2006 [R]: During the Spanish Civil War, a young girl named Ofelia enters a world of twisted fantasy while above, her step-father's brutality causes trouble in the midst of a rebellion. Genuinely a beautiful movie. It's like a fairy-tale, and sometimes you forget it's a horror movie. It's simply magical, but frighteningly real. If you love classic fantasy, monsters, history, and horror, you'll love this movie. 10/10

Alien 1979 [R]: A team on a shipping vessel in soace come in contact with a parasitic alien within the clausterphobic confines of the ship. A classic, and it's still absolutely terrifying. Sharp insight on early 80's consumerism (in more than one sense), and a marvel of alien horror. Its very claustrophobic, tense, and 100% worth watching, especially if you love scifi. 10/10.

Aliens 1986 [R]: Continuing the story of Alien, space marines must investigate a distress signal from a colony, and what they find is more horrifying than they could have imagined. Full of retro action, humorous quips, scares, and plenty of bullet spray, it's a terrifying and fun watch. I enjoyed it just as much as the original, and its just awesome, while being scary at times. 10/10

Annihilation 2018 [R]: After the mysterious death of her husband, a Biologist goes into Area X to discover what horrifying cosmic entity his team found there. Not nearly as good, or accurate as the book (I CANT reccomend the Southern Reach trilogy enough), but this movie genuinely frightened me at points and the setting is simply beautiful. Its clever, creepy, and it's a strange watch. 8/10

Signs 2002 [PG-13]: After strange symbols appear in the cornfields on a family's farm, they must protect each other, and their faith, during the invasion. Love this movie, it's just spooky enough, but outside if the monsters, the people in this movie are what really matter. It's compelling, and a beautiful story. Simply excellent. Plus you'll know where the screaming guy in a closet meme comes from after seeing this one. 10/10

A Quiet Place 2018 [PG-13]: Could you survive a world where making a single sound could spell your death? Monsters decend upon the Abbot family, just as a baby is on the way. One of my favorite movies ever. Its beautiful and ABSOLUTELY horrifying. I think I forgot about eating my popcorn while watching this one. Overall, the desperate survival of the Abbots is heartwarming, but oh so stressful. If you can, PLEASE watch the sequel right after this one. 10/10

A Quiet Place 2 2021 [PG-13]: The Abbots face new challenges as they traverse a devestated landscape, and monsters wait around every dark corner for them. An EXCELLENT sequel. I caught myself actually going "NOOO AAAA" at some points, and its totally a worthy sequel to the scares in the first one. Again, great story, great characters, great cinematography, great message. 10/10.

Coraline 2009 [PG]: Coraline Jones, unhappy with moving to a new house, suddenly finds a whimsical world in a little hidden tunnel inside the house, but she learns the sinister truth behind the candy-colored world beyond the wall. Dont let the stop-motion animation confuse you; this movie is terrifying. A classic from my childhood, and its a treat to watch every Halloween. The Beldam has to be on the list of the most horrifying villains ever. 10/10

Zombies, ghosts, ghouls, and everything in between:

The Haunting 1963 [G]: Based on the novel The Haunting of Hill House, a group of people must stay in a supposedly haunted mansion. Eleanor, one of the women, suddenly believes that the house is talking directly to her. One of the many adaptations of the book, it's spooky, and it's very disturbing, while also having a nice theme. Perfect for setting the mood on a October night. 8/10

Night of The Living Dead 1990 [R]: Survivors take shelter in an abandoned farm house while the undead attack. Can they work together, or let their own prejudices get the best of them? I havent seen the original yet, but I love this movie. Very scary, and its directed by Tom Savini, so lots of good ol zombie gore. Not only that, there's a good bit of social commentary here on racism. The classic was the original zombie film. 9/10.

Dawn of The Dead 1978 [R]: As the undead rise up, survivors take to a shopping mall in order to survive. I don't know how to describe this movie's vibe. It has this weird retro 70's feel, mixed with uncanny horror. It's campy at times, but it doesn't take away the scariness. Very fun in a weird way, and its an on-the-nose satire of american consumerism. 10/10

Train To Busan 2016 [R]: While the world crumbles around them, a small group of survivors must learn to protect each other on a train headed to Busan. Seriously, please watch this one. It's completely unique to any zombie film I've seen. It's scary, but you genuinely care about the characters, and its VERY intense. Love this one. 10/10

Murder and ect:

Scream 1990 [R]: A masked serial killer stalks high school students in middle class suburbia. Its a parody of the modern horror genre, clever and scary all at once. I enjoyed it as a classic and I liked the commentary on how violence with no essence effects people, especially when glorified with horror films. Definitely not for everyone, but its good never the less. 8/10

Wait Until Dark 1967 [NR (I give it a PG-13)]: A gang of criminals looking for heroin attack the home of a blind woman, and it turns into a horrifying game of back and forth between them, until it can go on no longer. Literally one of the best thriller movies ever. Genuinely scary, and genuinely clever. This was actually the first film I saw Audrey Hepburn act in. Super tense near the end, I was biting my nails the whole time. 10/10

The Village 2004 [PG-13]: A rural community is faced with a hard decision as the monsters in the woods leave bloody warnings around their small town. I watch this one every autumn. Its atmospheric, the score is breathtaking, and its a great story. Its beautiful, gently frightening, and its overall a love story. I love this one a lot, even though I know a lot of people didnt like it. Don't go in expecting a great twist at the end, and you'll enjoy it. 10/10

Jane Eyre 2011 [PG-13]: Jane Eyre becomes the governness to an estate, and find a dark secret there. Not necessarily horror, but its gothic and absolutely beautiful. Its the perfect october movie. I love it lots. Nothing hits different than a rainy october day, a cup of chai tea, and this movie playing. 10/10

TV Series:

Stranger Things 2016- [PG-13]: After a child is taken by a supernatural force, the small town community of Hawkins must search for answers and find him before its too late, but as they search, a horrifying conspiracy comes to life before them. I adore this series. Its a love letter to the 80s. Cant reccomend it enough. 10/10

The Twilight Zone 1959-1964 [PG]: A serialized series featuring many different stories ranging from scifi to horror and everything inbetween. Its genius honestly. Each story is compelling, and thought provoking. A great Halloween watch. 10/10

The Walking Dead 2010- (seasons 1 & 2) [R]: A sheriff wakes up from a coma to find himself in a terrifying world of the undead. Its a decent series, at least in the first two seasons! Its pretty scary. Its great if you like zombie movies! 7/10

Over The Garden Wall 2014 [PG]: Two brothers find themselves lost within the world of the Unknown, a place where time is blended together and reality isn't quite right. Ok, real talk here. Its my favorite series of all time. I could go on and on and on about it. If you haven't seen it, please I beg you. Theres nothing like it. Its literally the BEST autumn show to watch. Clever, funny, lightly disturbing, deep, nostalgic...its fantastic. 11/10

So, there you have it. Huge list of horror movies I've enjoyed and actually reccomend. I have seen quite a few more than this (Halloween, Dawn of the Dead 2004, Nightmare on Elm Street, ect), but I specifically picked out the ones I love the most. Enjoy! And have a great autumn.

Oh sweet joy! It turns out that there are many more great, fantastic, cosy movies (and tv-series!) just absolutely perfect for autumn. By popular demand, I return with even MORE autumny recommendations, and this time, there might even be spell-checking. (Looking at you, “Silence of the Lamps”) (I won’t edit that, because that’s just funny.) 

Thank you for reading the previous one, and I hope you’ll enjoy this one too! We have some GREAT ones coming up. I hope! Maybe! But what I believe will really perfect this second list, is the fact, that autumn is close to being at its peak right now, with it being October! Woohoo! 

Pumpkins, Jack’o’lanterns, spooky movies, Halloween, tricks and treats, fog, rain, candles lit in the dark, delicious tea, and scarves, because the chill is back in the air! Amazing! The aesthetics are to die for! 

I’m on a small break from university, and have actually been having some allowed free time, to do autumny stuff. By this I mean I can do autumny stuff with my family and friends, and not feel guilty, because this time I’m not procrastinating. Well, I’m a little behind on some books, but it’s not that bad. You’re allowed free time on breaks! They’re supposed to be mostly free time, anyone knows that. I refuse to be a good student on breaks! 

This free time means that I have actually had time to watch some of these movies and tv-shows myself, and so I can feel a little better about recommending most of them, since I’ve actually seen them. Hehe. Still. I do have other, boring stuff to do, like reading for uni, emptying the dishwasher, cooking, vacuuming, etc., so there will be some of these I’m including, I have not watched, and those will be, again, backed by the power of optimism. Yay! Anyway! You’ve read enough not-halloween recommendationing, and is getting bored - Let’s get to it! (Also, these are still in random order, and I will put warnings at the end, again <3)

Coraline

I remember watching Coraline when it came out in theaters, years ago. I also remember that we had a little closet-thing in the wall, small and closed-up, but still very similar to the one she goes into, in the movie. Needless to say, this was not a favorite for little Julie, who was absolutely scared shit-less by this movie. I remember button-eyes, decaying puppets, and a very scary mom. Now, I have not watched the full movie since, but from bits and pieces through the years, I can wholeheartedly recommend this one. It’s stop-motion, the details are incredible, and wow, this movie is great. If you, like me, are no longer 9 years old, watch it! It’s wonderful, and surprisingly, very feel-good in the family aspect. A great movie!

An adventurous 11-year-old girl finds another world that is a strangely idealized version of her frustrating home, but it has sinister secrets.

//Warning: do not watch this, if you are around nine years old. It will absolutely traumatize you about small closets in old houses. If you are not nine years old, I think you’re good! Just the right amount of spookyness, I believe!

Sense and Sensibility

I watched this with a good friend in february, I think. So I’m not sure why I think this has to go on an autumny list, but I stand by it! Maybe it’s the beige and brown, beautiful clothing, the many shots of nature, and the relationships between these characters, that fits very well with the cold and chilling air, we find ourselves in, here in lovely October. I don’t know. Food for thought. But this is a great movie, and I really think you should try watching it under a blanket, with tea and a good friend. We didn’t know the story before we saw it, and it had us guessing! And there is a part my other friend Sif told me, always makes her dad cry, and I think that should be taken as a compliment to this movie! It’s great! Love, sisters, crisis and period drama (and great clothes), this movie has it all! (also - Emma Thompson!)

Rich Mr. Dashwood dies, leaving his second wife and her three daughters poor by the rules of inheritance. The two eldest daughters are the title opposites.

//Warning: It might make you cry. But I promise, it will be a good experience, in the end. It’s not scary, though.

Over the Garden Wall (animated series)

Well, this one, I’ve been dreading to add to my list. Now, you must not misunderstand, it’s not because I don’t like it. It’s because this series is so great, so weird, so beautifully drawn and made, that I’m afraid I could write a whole blog post dedicated only to Otgw, and still not feel that I have done it justice. It's just so good. It’s like the someone just decided one day, to make a series, that absolutely, perfectly encompasses autumn and halloween, and then did just that. The storyline is good, the art is good, the soundtrack is good. God, the soundtrack. I’ve also made sure to listen to this show’s soundtrack, since we left summer behind, and it’s just so good. There’s a reason tumblr went wild, when this show was first released. But since this is an AUTUMNY list, let me focus on those aspects. Big dark woods, scary noises in the dark, red and golden leaves, fantastical beings - this show has it all, and trust me, it WILL get you in the mood for autumn. I almost started puking leaves and pumpkins when I watched this with my friends, that’s how pumped it got me. This show has a special place in my heart, and if you promise not to tell all the other movies and shows on the list, I’ll admit something: this might be a favorite of mine. Maybe THE autumny favorite.

Warning: May be a little spooky, but I have it on good authority from a friend that is a true scaredy-cat, with nerves of whipped cream, that’s it’s fine. She  could handle it, watches it every year, and she’s fine. Good levels of scary.  

Corpse Bride

Believe it or not, that same scaredy-cat of a friend, I just mentioned, actually instructed a musical, based on this story. Is she a horror-fan or not? I have no idea, but her show was so well-done, that it actually made me like this movie a bit better. I have seen it before, but she convinced me, by telling me the original story behind this movie, that it’s pretty great. And by association, this movie became pretty great, too. It’s been some years since I saw this, but it’s a pretty good halloween movie, I think. Dead people tormenting the living. Classic autumn stuff, I would say. And it’s pretty well-made, I think, stop-motion again! I like the aesthetic of a corpse bride, though you have to admit the actual thing is pretty sad. The premise is haunting and scary, but it’s more morose, melancholic and depressing, I think. Poor Emily. But a good movie! Sorry, maybe that wasn’t a very enticing description, but I promise, it will do you more good than bad, to watch it. And then go google the original story, the movie is based on!

//Oops, nearly forgot a warning! Warning: some people are dead, and therefore rotting a bit. If you’re squeamish, don’t watch. If you love sad love stories, definitely watch!

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Yeah, I’m not sure why this has to go on my Autumny List either, sorry. It just has to. I know it takes place over an entire year, but in my head, it jut fits very well with the whole magic, supernatural, foggy halloween times we find ourselves in. I mean, look at the cover! Maybe it’s the iconic scene, right before the troll is discovered in the girls’ bathroom (sorry, spoiler), with the floating jack’o’lanterns, and tables almost crashing undet the weight of candy and cakes, that convinced my brain, that this is a halloween movie. I don’t know. Just trust me on this, and watch the first Harry Potter movie. It’s pretty good.

Little Women (Important: 2019 edition)

Alright girls, we’re hopping genres again! This is another period-drama (sort of), about sisters, and wow, I cried to this. I bawled, I sobbed, I choked on snot, and was a little inconsolable, when I watched it with friends, at the cinema. One of the best experiences this year, and one of the greatest movies I have watched in a long time. I love everything about this movie: the family-bonds, the clothing, the many nature-shots, the developments of characters, (almost) all the characters, and just, wow. No good way to end that sentence, because I want to just keep describing all the good parts of this movie, because it's everything. It’s amazing, and yes, i’m exaggerating, but I can’t help it. I forgot to eat my popcorn or drink my water, when we watched this, that’s how mesmerized I was by this movie. I love Jo, I think I can empathize a lot with her, and if I could talk to her, if she was real, I would thank her for telling her story. This movie is great, you should watch it, because it makes you feel so warm inside.

Alien

I watched this for the first time last year, when I decided I was going to watch the classic older horror movies, and not freak the fuck out. I mostly succeed. And this movie was a joy to watch. That’s maybe weird to say about an alien horror movie, but wow I just love Sigourney Weaver, and the aesthetics of this movie. The story is thrilling, and I really did not like most of the characters, I thought they were hysteric and annoying, but I still rooted for them. It’s a different kind of horror movie, that’s for sure! But when I watched it, I totally understood why it has become such a classic.

Edward Scissorhands

Haven’t seen this one! I want to, though. I think I’ve seen one scene, where this man accidentally pokes a water-bed, and younger me felt that was a very tragic thing, on more levels. Johnny Depp yet again, so it has to be good, right? I know this poor guy, Edward, has it rough, and was given some really not that practical hands. Man, he looks sad, huh? So maybe more sad than scary, yet again. Dont know! But I really do want to watch it. Winona Ryder is in this, too, so really, it’s a no-brainer!

Pride + Prejudice + Zombies

I mean, why the hell not - right? I love Jane Austen. I love Pride and Prejudice. And I really like halloween, so OF COURSE, I’m including this one. I’ve seen it, too. My friend Malin and I watched it a couple of years ago, and yeah, it’s good. It’s not high cinema, no, but I don’t need that. It was a fun, weird twist, and sometimes, that’s all you need. There is a very interesting scene with a corset, that was NOT in the book, and I think it really added something to this story. And Lily James. Whew. Great movie. Great for autumn. I will be watching this one again.

//Warning: I can’t really remember, but I think there’s some pretty gross scenes with zombies. Rotting flesh is NOT pretty. But just close your eyes for that, and  you’ll be good!

The Haunting of Hill House

I first watched this series when i came out some time ago. I never finished it, I don’t think my heart was in it, but by no fault of the show. Now, that the same creator has made another show, which my mom and I are hooked by, and almost through, I think I’ll be returning to this one - it deserves another chance! A great old house, ghosts, family secrets and INCREDIBLE aesthetics, mean there must be something here! Also, I think it’s based on a novel by Shirley Jackson, and it’s supposed to a classic horror novel, and Stephen King tweeted that he liked it, so yeah, it’s promising! The series I’m watching with my mom is spooky, but tumblr says the Haunting of Hill House is supposed to be much more spooky, terrifying, even, and I really want to find out if that’s true!

Psycho

Another old classic! Woo! Have not watched, but really, I feel like that’s almost a crime by now. I HAVE to watch it. Soon, I’m planning to. Sadly, It’s old, and I grew up with the internet, so I’ve been spoiled oh so dreadfully, and knows all the bloody details and plottwists of this oldie but goldie. But I still want to watch it! It must be a classic for a reason - right? Also, I’ve never seen the full version of the famous shower scene, and that’s just embarrassing. Shame on me.

A Phoenix secretary embezzles $40,000 from her employer's client, goes on the run, and checks into a remote motel run by a young man under the domination of his mother.

//Warning: It’s a horror classic! It’s gotta be scary. Then again, it DID come out in 1960. Be careful about this one! Sorry, I have no idea, have never watched it.

Hannibal (the TV series)

It’s gross, it’s scary, it’s aesthetic, there is a danish elegant man eating people in snowy Baltimore, and you really shouldn’t pay him to be your psychiatrist. Hannibal! I first watched this as a young, edgy teenager, and all the blood and gore didn't get to me at all - I just enjoyed the cat-and-mouse game between Will Graham, our main character, very mentally unstable, and a dog-lover, and Dr. Hannibal Lecter, a renowned psychiatrist, elegant, high-society - and also, he talks like a mixture of the bible and an old greek sonet. What I'm trying to get at is that this show is weird. Good weird. But also, now no longer an edgy teenager myself, it’s really gross. A man’s leg is cut off and served to himself. That’s gross. I didn’t like that, and I definitely covered my eyes. Other than that, it’s a very vivid show, with great focus on presentation and symbolism. I would love for someone to analyse each episode, because there's so much attention to detail. It’s honestly impressive. And after having watched many, many shows about crime and murders, I must say, this show has THE most buckwild, creative, never seen before ways of killing people. How the hell do you come up with a murderer using people’s different skin colors to make a mural? I don’t know. It’s disgusting, but man is it different. I’m halfway through season two, and there is a lot to unpack! Also, have to mention, very homoerotic - that’s a plus. Don’t think I could’ve stomached all the blood, otherwise. I hate blood, and wow is there blood in this show.

The Haunting of Bly Manor

Ooh boy. Ooooh boy. This series is very good. VERY good. I’m watching it with my mom right now, I think we’re at episode 7, and wow are we hooked. It’s spooky, it’s haunting, it’s thrilling, it’s mysterious, and wow is it scary. We both agreed to go together, the first night we watched this, and our dog had to be taken out on his night-walk. She didn’t want to go alone, and i didn’t want to stay back at the house, alone. So we went together, and I was so freaked out that I nearly peed my pants, when some kids screamed in our neighborhood. It’s so very much what I want a ghost-story to be, but it’s also a lot more, and much greater for it. I love all the characters, they’re all so well-rounded, and most of them are good. The big manor is spooky, and the woods surrounding it are foggy and dark, and yes, this is really a great series for autumn and halloween. It’s the second series made by Mike Flanagan. There are some similarities between the two shows, and surprisingly, some of the same actors! I think that’s very interesting, and it also made me very confused, as I watched the first episodes of the Haunting of Bly Manor, and could not, for the life of me, figure out where the hell I had seen these people before. It made it even more eerie in a way, and I appreciate that. I love this show, and I think I’ll be very sad when we’re through with it. I guess the natural thing to do, will be to follow up with Flanagan’s previous horror series, The Haunting of Hill House! Also, there’s lesbians in this one. Very nice. I appreciate that. Also, surprisingly - I love the children! They’re so cool and brave, and it would be very nice if especially Flora could go with me, the next time I’m going to a haunted house. Such a badass.

Warning: It’s spooky. It’s the perfect halloween series, so of course it’s very spooky! This gif I chose is spooky, and I promise the show itself is worse. But if you can handle dead people creepily staring in the background, and maybe has someone to watch it with, I think you’ll be fine!

Favorite story you’ve written so far: you think this world is a dream come true (but you’re wrong) for sure! It’s super niche but it’s something I wrote out of love for a movie I discovered this Halloween and absolutely love. Though all you’ve got to do is want something (and then let yourself have it) is a close second. Basically, anything I write that sounds absolutely bonkers as a concept is one that I love 😂 (and it’s no coincidence that both fics are Mai-centric! I love all my Mai-centric fics nearly equally)

Fic you were nervous to post: Is there an “all of the above” option? 😂 I’m always nervous to post. But in particular, I was nervous for if you ran away (come back home), because it was Mai-centric and longer than any one-shot I’d written thus far, and also you think this world is a dream come true (but you’re wrong), because it’s Mai-centric and a Coraline AU, which makes it BONKERS as an idea

Why was I nervous to post Mai-centric fics, you ask? Two reasons: 1) Mai is very different from who I am as a person (I vibe a lot more with Aang and Ty Lee, sometimes Katara and Sokka), so I didn’t want to upset the Mai stans by writing her incorrectly. 2) Mai is generally not well-liked in the fandom at large, so I especially didn’t want to attract antis who would accuse me of writing Mai as too emotional and loving (which is why I tried to justify that in my tags). Luckily, my comments have all been lovely, and I’m far less afraid to post fics about her now that I’ve written three fics with her as the focus! And the shoutout from @nonbinary-crafter-aang praising my portrayal of her?? I was touched 🥺 still am

How you choose your titles: Song lyrics or movie/book lines that speak to me, occasionally a pun. Remember that post I rb’d about how authors title their works? My tags pretty much say it all 😂

Do you outline: Ehh...define outlining 😂 for my one-shots, nope. But for my upcoming multichap works (see below) and Nanowrimo work (original fiction, so I won’t talk about it on here, but send an ask if you’re curious), YES ABSOLUTELY!

For my Nanowrimo work and one of my upcoming AUs (a Soulmate AU), the worldbuilding is so complex that it’s an absolute necessity. For the other upcoming AU (a time travel AU), there are just too many things that need to happen at certain times so as not to interfere with canon events, and things I want to change from canon and things I want to keep...I think you get the idea 😂

Complete: Basically my entire maiko halloweek series! Check it out if you want some fics about the most underrated canon ATLA couple :)

In-progress: ...En Hamilton Heights again...but not for long, sadly. Still trying to decide between a quick conclusion and just flat-out orphaning it. Still haven’t made up my mind, but either way, it won’t be what I originally planned, unfortunately.

I’m also counting my ATLA Soulmate AU on the basis of forever in my mind (only you), which has the worldbuilding and fits into the AU without much problem (the AU is going to be a series of one-shots, not a multichap fic, because there won’t be enough deviations from canon imo to justify multiple chapters. And one-shots are just less pressure for me 😂)

[EDIT 12/12/2020: added another fic because I’m an idiot and forgot about this too 🤦‍♀️😂 it’s a year-old idea that I started writing but I’m picking it back up thanks to the Heist banter in MatPat’s St Jude stream!]

-A fic series combining Escape the Night and Who Killed Markiplier (Heist and Date are part of it too, but only tangentially at the moment. Depends on how involved I want DA Y/N to be). Tentatively titled A Heavy Cost, and definitely won’t happen in any of Mark’s projects, but in a way that’s actually for the best 😂 the canonicity for me stops at ETN S3 (with some S4), then it’s canon divergence

Coming soon/not yet started: OOOH YESSS HERE WE GO

Okay okay sooo we’ve got two main things:

–An ATLA Soulmate AU, featuring platonic and romantic soulmates! I know I called it in-progress, and I stand by that even though I haven’t actually set up the series on AO3 yet, but this AU is about to be SO MUCH MORE than just a few Maiko moments. Because...drum roll...it’s gonna be entirely Aang-centric (with maybe one or two exceptions)! Like Mai, Aang is a character that doesn’t get as many -centric fics as he should (and being an Aang stan also isn’t unanimous for some reason??), so I’m gonna fix that. Plus I want to dive further into his mind, and I think I’m more equipped to do that than I was with Mai, since Aang and I are very similar in attitude.

–Bumizumi time travel AU, which can be read as platonic until the last couple chapters (it’ll be multichap) but definitely has a romantic agenda throughout. So just. Be warned if you don’t ship them. It’s gonna be chock full of comedy and antics! Also A LOT of platonic affection between Izumi and teen Zuko (and just between Izumi, Bumi, and the Gaang in general), because platonic affection is underrated and also I can :D I’m also probably gonna make fun of how some elements of affection have become solely romantic territory, because...um, no, hugging and holding hands and cuddling can be done between friends, thanks! (Maybe it’s the ace in me talking. But regardless)

There are also vague concepts I’m spitballing, like:

-Zukaang telepathy AU (Platonic Zukaang, the only romance I’ll ever write in ATLA is for the canon ships, prompted by a dream because apparently ATLA lives in my head rent-free forever now 😂)

-Evil Zuko AU (Azula doesn’t exist, mostly prompted after watching Aang make fun of Zhao and realizing that if Zuko had been in any position of power during the War...the Gaang would have stood no chance at all)

-Bumizumi Arranged Marriage AU (Bumi and Izumi both think the other is hotheaded/reckless (Izumi @ Bumi) or uptight (Bumi @ Izumi). So Kataang and Maiko (along with Sukka, Ty Lee, and Toph because...duh) set them up in an arranged marriage, with the presented reasoning being that they already know each other’s families, it’ll be a great symbol of unity, and this way Izumi doesn’t have to worry about suitors. They both agree to it (it’s arranged, not forced), and over time, they warm up to each other...and maybe even...fall in love?? Prompted because we need more arranged marriage fics! On that note, I’m gonna plug shadows and steel by @dearestpartnerofgreatness because arranged marriage needs more rep and this fic does it and with Maiko to boot!)

-Zukaang as Brothers AU (I saw a fic about this, but it wasn’t complete. If it’s not done by the time I get to this concept, I’m gonna write it, because just...imagine the possibilities! Zuko and Aang are already basically brothers in canon anyway, this is just making them brothers in blood as well as in their hearts. This is especially vague because I have no concept of how this is gonna work 🤷‍♀️ I’ll get to it eventually)

[EDIT 11/25/2020: I’m adding two more because I forgot these have been swirling around in my head too 😂]

-A fix-it fic based on May You Always Be Satisfied, a backstory fic for Who Killed Markiplier by @blackaquokat! I recently reread it and remembered that I was gonna write a fix-it for that fic. Not because the fic sucks, it’s actually amazing! I’m just a sucker for the main (requited unrequited) pairing, and there’s at least five ways to make that pairing canon and avoid the mess of Who Killed Markiplier. And THEY ALL DESERVE TO BE HAPPY OKAY

-A Finnrey fix-it for the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy (this one is especially vague, and I probably won’t write it since a bunch of these already exist, but it’s fun to think about. Maybe if I ever run out of WIPs 🤷‍♀️)

Upcoming story that you’re most excited to write: I’m equally excited for the Soulmate AU and the Bumizumi Time Travel AU! I’m also excited for my Nanowrimo work to be finished, but that’s more so in-progress than upcoming

oh shit that's a tough one! cause i love animated movies and i don't think i can rank those... for some reason i always have troubles ranking stuff anyways, but when it's my favourite things from one of my favourite genres? too hard to do

so, i'll try to talk about the first ten that will come to mind and hope it's gonna be good enough

first of all my favourite animation studio is and probably always will be laika, so five positions on this list would be occupied instantly:

Coraline

i fell in love with this studio's work because of this movie, i love everything about it, the story, the characters, the creepy vibe, the black cat being important lol, the old lesbian couple of drama queens? action, friendships, family feels, and important, important lesson on being careful with your wishes and supporting your family even in darker times? amazing

i've read the book and i think it's also one of the best on-screen adaptations i've ever seen

see i love all of laika's movies basically for the same things: INCREDIBLE, MIND-BLOWING amount of work they put into everything, the soul in each movie, the dark vibe of most of their films, the kindness, the lessons, the difficult themes they aren't afraid to speak about, the twists with villains and heroes and how complex the world really is? how complicated people and relationship are? words cannot express how i love all that, and paranorman is all of it and more, also first openly gay character in children's movies shown on big screen? and no one even talks about mitch, what a shame

Boxtrolls

movie that got hate for including gay couples in the trailer and because one of the soundtracks touched on gay relationship? perfect, also i have to say i LOVE "some kids" song, it's wholesome and cute

this movie is so sweet and yet again deals with so many important things, and it's so underappreciated, and it's got one of my favourite female characters in it, winnie is an icon 💙

Kubo and the Two Strings

it's got everything the movies above have PLUS one of my favourite enemies to lovers ships, and this movie uses both the biggest and the smallest stop-motion puppets ever which is incredible, i love this story with my whole heart, even just taking about it makes me want to rewatch it right now and fall asleep with the warmth of it

Missing Link

i took my parents to see this one in cinema and they were so so impressed by laika instantly, my dad couldn't stop talking about it for a week lol

this movie means so much to me, it's about found family, identity issues, learning from your mistakes, finding your place in the world and so much more

and we are kinda sorta not done with laika yet because guess who worked on one of my favourite animated movies of all time the corpse bride? yes, you guessed it, so

Corpse Bride

again it's stop-motion that deals with difficult themes of trauma and etc, it's got dark vibes, and i love everything about it, the songs, the desings, the details, the characters, and that moment victor and emily play the piano as a duet? i'm gonna cry, peak romance right there

as you can see i really fucking love stop-motion lol, but it's true, i love this movie and again for a of the reasons i love the others like it, i watch it every single christmas and halloween, i adore it and sally's song? one of my favourite songs ever

Rise of the Guardians

this movie gives me so much joy, i again watch it every christmas season and again it's got everything i love, the animation is beautiful, the characters are written so well, the attention to details there, the found fucking family i will die for them, and oh don't even get me started on their villain and hero parallels, the shared pain? similar backstory? no one understands them better than each other? it's basically sebjace animated that's what i'm trying to say

The Road to El Dorado

fun gay adventures of my sons tulio and miguel? soundtrack full of homoerotic subtext written by none other than elton john himself? beautiful incredible colorful animation? the dialogue? the jokes? the polyamory of it all? chel being an icon? "you fight like my sister!" "i've fought your sister, that's a complement!" i love this movie with all of my heart and soul

do i even need to say anything? anya (who should be nastya in russian but i don't care) and dima are what shaped my ship preferences, they are so... hetero in an unmistakably bi way that it hurts

lovehate? idiots to lovers? childhood crush? pinning? slow built? *smacks the ship* this bitch can fit literally every single favourite ship trope in it!

i love the story even tho it's got no historical accuracy but that's basically fanfiction and we don't need that history nonsense in our slow burn idiots to lovers fic, right?

26: The late Robin Williams & Hayao Miyazaki are two particular people in my life I’ve idolized for what happiness/imagination they’ve brought into others lives. Robin Williams untimely passing still hurts for me to look back on because this man made it his mission to bring so much joy into other peoples lives through his acting on the big screen, whether it was dramatic or comedic. That’s what I found the most impressive about Robin’s range in acting. He could be an over the top funny individual, but Robin’s acting chops were in a league of their own. Whether he was behind the microphone having the time of his life as Genie on Aladdin or giving a powerful dramatic performance on Good Will Hunting as Will’s therapist, I could feel the unconditional kindness. There was something about Robin’s acting power that would usually manage to reel me in. Even if I never knew him in real life, obviously, this man just radiated with so much kindness that I felt from his entire presence on screen. It’s seriously unfortunate what became of Robin Williams in the end with his unexpected death, but his legacy has inspired me to be kinder to others in real life. As for Hayao Miyazaki, this guy is a huge factor in why I got into loving anime related stuff all the more, as his creations in storytelling and the art itself for the movies were beyond unlike anything I still have yet to seen be topped quite frankly. It’s so easy for me to get emotionally lost in his films like My Neighbor Totoro, Princess Mononoke, Castle In The Sky, and Spirited Away. This man never ceases to amaze me with how usually impactful and in depth his films are. They’re so full life that it’s easy to lose sight of whats happening in the actual story at times. Mayazaki understood how to breathe a ton of humanity into creating such resonating works of fiction. Have a much greater appreciation for them in my adult years. There’s a reason why they inspired companies, like Pixar, to create immersive stories of their own.

36: My three dream scenarios I’d like to fulfill? 

1: Become A Voice Actor

Been interested in voice acting since I was a young teen, but have been in a conflicted state over these recent passing years in my life on whether or not I’d like to approach that route. There’s a lot of commitment I’d have to put into auditioning my butt off for roles I may or not get. Then comes the consistent practicing to keep my vocal chords in shape, so I don’t get rusty whatsoever. The industry for this kind of job can be hard to get recognized in too by how many other notable well known VA’s there are already. Not to mention, from what I’ve researched up on being a voice actor doesn’t bring in the money naturally, as it’s more of a passion job which that’s terrific and all, but if I want to partake in this profession I’ll have to juggle a job along with that which putting all those factors in my head honestly makes me intimidated. Ahhh well, it’s just something I’ll have to wait and see on if I can make that idea into a reality or not. No need to rush myself, of course.

2: Taking Up The Mantle Of Reviewing Shows & Films For A Living

Fiction, just like for many people, has been a great deal of helping me in my life moments of stress, solitude, depression, and anger. I’d love nothing more than to further express that to anyone out there in reviewing in great detail certain films or shows that I’ve come to love over these years in my life so far. Mostly for animation though, as its been a gateway for finding many gems of quality films or series. It never ceases to surprise me on how creative and powerful animation can be with its inventive ways of getting me to become an emotional mess. While I do enjoy live action series and films they pale in comparison to the beauty animation has brought into my life, since my early childhood of watching shows on Cartoon Network, Toon Disney, and Nickelodeon to a smaller degree. I’d like to think I’m good enough with how I present my reasons on why I feel so strongly connected to these stories showcasing characters trying to find hope in their own hard times. I try my hardest to take moments of my own life and find ways to connect it with whatever story I’m getting into next, so it can be all the more a special experience for myself. It’s important to put whatever character resonates with you most in their shoes for why you feel their emotional journey connecting with your own life on every conceivable level possible. That will make it when you write these kinds of reviews a very empowering read for others to feel either heard in their own feelings or simply giving others a new perspective to consider on this piece of fiction you’re discussing. Seeing some of my own particular analytical posts in the past here on Tumblr garner some attention from people gives me a boost of feeling better about potentially making this choice.

3: Starting A Family Of My Own…?

I can’t begin to tell ya how many times I’ve gone back and forth for getting married in the distant future to become a father has sped through my mind. On one hand, it scares the crap out of me to be taking up that big of a responsibility. However, on the other hand its deeply fascinated me emotionally of creating life through love for your significant other in starting your own family tree. I’d love to be able to raise kids of my own to pass on the lessons I’ve learned in life to make them become better people in the distant future, while showering them with unconditional love and affection. That would fill me up with such an indescribable joyous feeling to hear their own dreams and desires on what they want to accomplish in life. While I’d be a strict parent, I wouldn’t be a hard headed one quick to dismiss their own complaints if they had problems with how I handled things, once they start to get older. The kind of parent I’d want to be is an understanding open minded one who doesn’t judge their son or daughter for when they have an issue with me. Just because I’m a parent in that scenario doesn’t put me on a pedestal of immunity from criticism. Granted, I certainly don’t want to be a doormat for them to try taking advantage of either, but it’s also important to not let your parental role go to your head, too.

Although, I don’t plan on even trying to make this last dream of mine happen anytime soon. This is something that is MUCH later down the road that I wish to have happen. However, I won’t lie and say that I haven’t considered just staying content as a single guy for the rest of my life relying on close friends to bring me joy equivalent to this dream. While I adore the concept of creating life through love and being a father, there’s a shit ton of responsibility that comes with it. The life of a parent is not just putting your all into it. You gotta give more than just 100% when wanting to be a parent. It’s a serious test of your spiritual endurance, which I’m not sure is something I’ll ever have the courage to do, but then again things can change in life on the flip of a dime, so I’ll see how this all plays out for myself. Maybe I’ll stay happily single or I’ll happily be raising kids.

Gee, I wonder why this dream of being a parent resurfaced in my head recently this year? Oh yeah, it was thanks to this character here.

Jkjkjk, I wanna know what got you into anime/manga, your favorite western piece of media (webcomic, movie, book, whatever) and if you have any pets. I have a cat. He's really cute.

My journey towards anime was pretty interesting if I may say so myself. I’ve always liked the art style, as long as I can remember. One of my favorite childhood movies was Cat Returns from Studio Ghibli. That was way before I even knew what anime was, possibly even before I knew Japan existed. But I was never really interested in watching anime or reading manga because it just felt like such a huge thing for a very specific audience and the idea of watching something that I knew pretty much nothing about wasn’t very appealing. It all changed when I started doing roleplays and one of my partners and teachers of this lovely craft threw in Grell Sutcliff one day. I thought the character was interesting so I decided to give Kuroshitsuji a watch. But even after that, it was a slow process. It took me about ten different anime (most of which I don’t even remember anymore because I dropped them pretty quickly) to actually get a taste for the archetypes, the language, and the overall atmosphere. Manga took me even longer to get into because I’ve never been a fan of long comics and they bore me very quickly. It wasn’t until I came around to Makai ouji: Devils and realist that I started enjoying manga as well.

As for western media, I’ve, naturally, been around them for way longer. Possibly even because of that, it’s very hard for me to pick a singular favorite here. When it comes to movies, I tend to prefer underrated gems but also appreciate some of the widely successful films out there. I’ve recently downloaded Rango, I adore Coraline, I’m absolutely smitten with Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron. I can’t even begin to tell how much I love Prince of Egypt or Cats Don’t Dance or Treasure Planet. Megamind is another one I really enjoyed. Or we can go into live-action movies, I had the time of my life when I was watching The Matrix, Nightcrawler or the MIB series. I also love some movies from my country, though most of those made here are cringy and bad. But then we have masterpieces like There’s no joking with the devil, The Mysterious Castle in the Carpathians, or Lemonade Joe. And they’re all amazing!

Books are another huge category that’s very hard to judge. I practically worship the tension in Poe’s stories but The Little Prince made me cry harder than probably any other piece of fiction ever. Shakespeare is easy to read and entertaining, Agatha Christie stimulates my little grey cells in ways I didn’t know were possible and my all-time favorite Czech author, Karel Čapek, writes with such beautiful sad melancholy, yet such bright hope that there’s simply nothing coming even closer to the impact his stories leave on the soul. Connected to this is the theatre and especially Jára Cimrman’s theatre. The play Visionary will simply give you chills once you realize all the subtle hints and language craft put to work and the very last scene, with the grim reaper peacefully smiling at the audience as he bids them goodbye simply will make your blood run cold.

And then it comes to amateur production and you know what, I actually have a very clear winner there. Go watch all parts of THIS and try telling me it’s not absolutely hilarious. It’s got English subs so y’all can enjoy it to the fullest. This group also has a very new mini-movie called Area51, I’m still working on subs for that one.

Finally, your last question, the pets. As of right now, I have two (or do younger siblings count as pets?), those being an Erdel terrier pup and a bunny. The pup is called Marie Therese von Morgenstern and bunny is Sir William the Fluffball. No, my family is not normal. They have a lot in common, such as being chubby, eating everything, biting people (though William doesn’t really anymore) and hating to have to stay at home. They’re also both kind of drama queens and pretty talkative. Therese doesn’t want to obey at all and it’s always a challenge to get her to come home when we take her out on a walk, William is much easier to handle because he’s tiny. Also, Will is a cuddler while Terry is a wild beast that breaks and devours everything in her close surroundings.

From what I know, @enmutrainconductor owns one of Muzan’s relatives so maybe the pet question would be more interesting there? Anyway, I hope you liked this and that I didn’t exhaust you too much.

Other than Supernatural, are you in any other fandoms? I myself probably wouldn't have ended up watching Supernatural if not for Netflix suggesting it after I watched Sherlock.

I am a huge Swiftie. (Taylor Swift fan). I actually have a fan account for that on Instagram and I think I have a couple of posts about her on here (mostly because it either tied into SPN somehow or it was just a cool picture or I was super excited or something like that) Anyways, have been a huge fan since 2008 and her music means a lot to me!

I used to be a big Potterhead, but not so much now. Don’t get me wrong- I still LOVE Harry Potter but I’m just not as involved in the fandom as before.

Another fandom I used to be a part of is the VeeTeam, which are fans of Jessii Vee. She’s a youtuber and she’s awesome. I haven’t had time in the past few months to watch her videos and I have kind of fallen out of the loop with the fandom so I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m part of the fandom now, but I’m still a fan.

The Hunger Games. Oh my god, where do I even start with this one? One of the best movie series. I remember watching the movie premieres and just freaking out the entire time. I can’t even pick a favorite book/movie because I love them all so much. I even dressed up as Katniss one Halloween. Had a real (but not harmful) bow with arrows and everything. The sad part is that the fandom has really died down and been so inactive lately but I’m down to freak out over it anytime. 

I have a whole list of other TV shows and movies that I like, but am not in the fandom of. I’ll list them because they still were a big part of my life. The only difference from the rest is just I wasn’t really in the fandom or the thing didn’t have a fandom. 

-Divergent. Loved the first movie/book and was partially in the fandom. The following books/movies were ehhh to me but I still love the first one.

-Coraline. I love Coraline with all my heart. Can’t stress that enough. There was never really a fandom, but if there was, I would be in it.

-The Martian. My favorite book and movie. Again, no fandom. I would totally be in it if there was. This needs a fandom and I’m sad it didn't get one. I just really love the book and movie so much it hurts. It’s so genius and well written and the actual movie itself is literal gold. Anyone down to start the fandom that we never got?

-Sherlock. I’m not part of the fandom really but I love it and it needs to be on this list.

-The Vampire Diaries. This one and the following one are both two TV shows that have been huge in my life. I wasn’t a part of the fandom sadly, but they were great. I really miss TVD.

-Pretty Little Liars. This show is great. Like with Katniss, I was a character from the show for Halloween. It turned out great. Again, wasn’t really a part of the fandom. 

Anyways, that answer turned out to a bit longer than I expected but I hope this helps! I basically kinda divided it into two sections, one were I was actually in the fandom, and the other where I love the show/book/movie and wasn’t in the fandom. I know that second half probably should be excluded as it strays away from your question, but I feel they needed a place on the list as they are so great. (And I kinda have the opposite story here. I hardcore stan Black Rebel Motorcycle Club here, but also classics like Led Zep and the Doors. Third part to me is dark wave/witch house/electro. Skeler, Craspore & Sidewalks & Skeletons are my shit here. Other than that, lots of game and movie soundtracks

These appear in the order in which I actually watched them, so it’s different from the roster I published earlier.

Corpse Bride Far from a bad movie, but there’s a certain “going through the motions” feeling to it that only got worse after I re-watched some of Tim Burton’s older stuff and saw just how many of these plot elements he’d used before.

Sleepy Hollow Actually a lot better than I remembered. The setting is unique, there are some interesting action scenes (including a carriage chase that I’m 100% sure was added at studio insistence), and all the usual Tim Burton flourishes, but with an interesting mystery plot to go with it. Ichabod Crane is an interesting hero; he’s undoubtedly brave and heroic and driven, with a Phileas Fogg-like detachment, but he’ll also squeal at spiders, and every action scene in the movie ends with him passing out.

Addams Family Values For me, this movie was missing a sheen of nostalgia that would have made it better, and it was a bit too much of a 90’s comedy for my taste, but it did entertain me, despite some clumsy storytelling, at least until the credits when that terrible rap version of the Addams family theme song started playing. The performances, especially Christopher Lloyd as Uncle Fester, Raul Julia as Gomez, Anjelica Huston as Morticia, and Christina Ricci as Wednesday, are fun and funny, and there are some great lines, even if I wasn’t into the slapstick physical comedy like I would have been in 1993 when this came out. It’s interesting how 90’s movies were more concerned with themes of social class, alienation, and being an outsider than recent movies; Edward Scissorhands takes them on as its main themes, but even this movie, which is definitely not a work of art on the same level, gets in its little commentaries.

Edward Scissorhands I saw this as a kid, but I’d never seen it as an adult, and now I know it’s an absolute masterpiece. With this and Beetlejuice and Batman Returns that I re-watched a few months ago, I was surprised at how much criticism of modern American society Tim Burton actually used to slip into his movies, and how all of it escaped me when I first watched the movies as a kid. But Edward Scissorhands has the more apt criticism; you can read the way the suburb, which is portrayed as the height of bland conformity, is first fascinated with Edward and later turns on him as a metaphor for middle America’s behavior towards the foreign: at first it’s a fun, exotic distraction, then starts to become passé, and finally latent mistrust of the different asserts itself and it becomes suspect and possibly dangerous.

Edward’s scissor hands are a weird but also perfect symbol for alienation from society. They make him stand out and give him unique talents, but they also make it hard for him to accomplish basic tasks, like opening doors and eating dinner, and they can hurt people by accident. There’s a lot of heart and humanity to the characters, so you sympathize with them even when they make mistakes. Edward Scissorhands is also a modern retelling of Frankenstein, and borrows that book’s Gothic quality, leading to a bizarre but poetic ending that sticks with you.

Beetlejuice I had seen this as a grown-up. (Well, as a teenager, anyway.) It’s pretty much how I remembered—probably the most quintessential Tim Burton movie, a quirky dark comedy with a unique aesthetic and lots of impressive special effects. It’s a fun movie with good performances (especially Michael Keaton—it’s hard to even see him under all that makeup and with the weird voice he does), but not as moving as Edward Scissorhands.

Coraline Like a lot of movies that came out between 2007 and 2015, I watched this on cable at some point, vaguely remembered liking it, and forgot most of the details. But the imagery is so strong that it stuck in my mind even though most of the plot went right out. After seeing Kubo and the Two Strings and watching this again, I'll make sure to catch the next Laika movie in the theaters. Their artistry is incredible, and the stories they make are the same kind of fun, quirky stuff that we used to get in the 90's and don't get that often anymore. I thought it was interesting that by the end of the movie, Coraline's parents haven't changed at all or learned anything. The whole plot arc was about Coraline herself learning to cope better, even though, even as an adult, I don't think her parents treated her that well at the beginning of the movie. It's understandable that they were stressed out and busy working and took it out on her by acting like she was an annoyance, but Coraline was hardly a bratty kid who just needed to learn a lesson; her parents weren't guiltless either. They start trying to make it up to her after their work is done, but since they haven't changed at all that means next time they have a book to write it's going to be the same thing.

I found that Edward Scissorhands affected me a lot more than Coraline while I was watching it, but Coraline was the movie that stuck with me the most of everything I watched during this marathon. I kept thinking about it later, wondering what happened to the characters afterward.

"Luna Eclipsed" / "Lunar Slander" "Luna Eclipsed" is sort of bittersweet for me. Season 2 of Friendship is Magic is a great season full of incredible episodes, and "Luna Eclipsed" is up near the top, but the climax never stops feeling abrupt, and not pursuing a longer arc for Princess Luna to resolve her issues was such a missed opportunity. Still, a great Halloween-themed episode. It always sticks out in my mind more than "Scare Master" in Season 5, even though that episode was about best pony Fluttershy (who also has a great, if short, scene in "Luna Eclipsed").

"Lunar Slander" is also a good Friendship is Witchcraft episode, though for me it's middle-tier. Some of the jokes weren't to my taste, but a lot of them were hilarious. That random pull of the Sonic X theme song makes me crack up every time, and when Princess Luna first appeared in "Luna Eclipsed" there were pony voices in my mind asking "Why is she wearing a bib?" Plus, "Princess of the Night", my third-favorite FiW song (after "It'll Be OK" and "Pinkie's Brew").

(P.S.: I didn’t get around to watching Kiki’s Delivery Service last weekend, but I will.)

American Gods by Neil Gaiman [Fantasy/ Sci-fi(?)/ Supernatural(?)]

Soon Shadow learns that the past never dies...and that beneath the placid surface of everyday life a storm is brewing - an epic war for the very soul of America - and that he is standing squarely in its path.

Overall? Not too shabby Mr. Gaiman, not too shabby at all. 

    To be clear, I wouldn’t have pulled this off the shelves if I hadn’t been super intrigued by the TV show’s trailer. (Currently Starz features this brilliant story). And upon further investigating the storyline behind this book, I found that Mr. Gaiman had also fathered one of my all-time favorite stories; Coraline (YES, HE DID THAT). So, right off the bat, I knew this book would be kooky. I got opinions left and right about his work, hence why I told myself that as soon as I found a cheap copy I would buy it right then and there. 

Anyway, it held true to the notion of the storyline being very strange, albeit Mr. Gaiman crafts what I find to be a very original and interesting concept. While the blurb alludes to what seems to be a normal book, it hides the fact that Shadow is eclipsed in a battle between gods. Yeah, you read that correctly. Literal gods. There’s literally a phelora of them. Greek, Roman, Norse, Gaelic, African, Indian, and a bunch of others that I literally never even heard of. So, from the jump of learning what the hell was going on, I was completely enthralled. 

Additionally, what makes everything even more satisfying about the characters, which I’ll get to soon, I promise, is Mr. Gaiman did his homework. He played with words to create their names and such a little detail could’ve slipped, if someone else had been struck with this idea. And because of this little word jumble, I found I had fun thinking about all the mythology I had learned and figuring out who was who. Plus, once I figured out what was going on, I was able to deduce who “Mr. Wednesday” was. 

However, let me just say, Shadow Moon, our protagonist, did bother me just a tad bit. Like many other readers, I found he was just a little too unbothered by everything going on around him. Don’t get me wrong, his character shifts in moods, and thoughts just as any character should. But, I felt perhaps, he was too withdrawn or too stoic for some events that sparked the climax. In any case, I found myself thinking about being in his shoes and to be fair, there were moments I was just like, yeah, I would probably say “screw it” at this point too. But save, for one other character, whom I thoroughly disliked through and through, I was pretty impressed. Especially with the little tidbits of Laura, sure, “puppy” isn’t something I would call my boyfriend, but hey, that was her characterization, no? 

The writing itself, I found very river-esque. What I mean by this, is that there were moments when I found myself intensely ready to devour the next page. But then there were some parts I found very stagnant and I couldn’t wait til it was over. It was almost like a piece of music, with its very low decrescendo and its striking crescendos. However, even during it’s more lackluster parts I found that I was still able to read each word and be okay knowing there was a fast-paced scene coming soon. 

But before I sign off on this one, I really, truly, mean it, when I say Gailman crafted such a beautiful, interesting concept for a story. The adventures Shadow went on (especially the one to the House of Rock (which is now currently on my bucket list) are so spectacular and written so impeccably that I would recommend this book to anyone who showed even the slightest bit of interest.

Anything is possible if you give it a chance

I trust him to be true to his nature, you need to trust those around you will be true to their nature. Even when it may appear that they are betraying who they are.

It really takes the pressure off if you understand that every experience you have, whether you characterize it as “good” or “bad,” is exactly the experience you need to have at that moment. Some choices may lead to more painful lessons than others, but living life in fear of living life is no way to live.

When I was trying to decide whether or not to go on my trip, I had a friend who flipped a coin and made me commit to the outcome. Life involves some risk. Flip the coin and see where it leads you.
