Hey! I actually finished writing two things in a row!

This SecUnit's first meeting with Murderbot and Three did not go as expected.

There I was, standing across the room from two other SecUnits. My clients and their clients were starting negotiations for proprietary reasons.

One of the SecUnits was non-regulatory, shorter, longer hair, and weapons scan showed regular energy weapons (tagged SecUnit1, feed: just SecUnit). The other one was more standard, of a different model, with projectile weapons instead (tagged SecUnit2, feed: Three (okay?)). They both had no armor on, though SecUnit1 seemed comfortable without it, which meant it probably knew how to fight effectively, and SecUnit2 seemed to be getting there.

I knew something was wrong when I sent a ping to our version of a Hubsystem and it took 2.5 seconds slower to get there. Curious, I started a routine system acknowledgment program (just checking that all systems responded to pings) and oh stars above, we've been hacked.

I should have known immediately that there was a problem, especially since there were new SecUnits aboard, but everything genuinely seemed fine before. I immediately started a diagnostic and sent an alarm code to Captain but was interrupted and was thrown out of my system. Feed blocked, this room was jammed. Oh stars, oh moons, oh shit, one of them was a combat SecUnit.

Adrenaline was starting to flow and one of my clients was sure to realize. I genuinely didn't know what the heck would happen then.

I tried the first thing that came to mind and sent to the SecUnits:

System system: units acknowledge.

Asking for the SecUnits to start a conversation.

A pause.

System system: acknowledged.

What the fuck do you want?

The second response came from the non-standard one. Oh joy. What do I do now?

System system: system compromised. User in room. Query?

You hacked my systems. What the frick do you want?

A pause.

We're not going to hurt your humans.

Calm down.

Well, frick you.

System compromised. User in room.

Query.

You're the one who hacked my systems. Explain.

A pause and then, from the SecUnit named Three:

We can give you the code to hack your government module.

Well. This just went in a direction that I couldn't have expected.

Acknowledged.

Another pause, then it tried again:

You could be free? No punishment from the government module, you don't have to do things you don't want...

Stars, they thought I still had a government module?

I know what you mean. But I don't need it.

Thank you.

The other SecUnits showed surprise. Another pause, where I rewinded the conversation our clients were having. Everything seemed fine, threat assessment was lowering, adrenaline lowering. I started trying to regain control of my systems.

Denied.

Denied.

Denied.

SecUnit1 sent:

Your coding is shit.

I didn't respond. Because unfortunately, it was right. Nothing I was attempting was close to succeeding.

Response:

Yes. Do yours?

I responded yes. Heh. Both parties are hiding the exact same thing from each other. If this was in media, I'm pretty sure the plot would follow wacky highjinks or something like that. Sadly, we were armed and deadly constructs with at least one purpose-built to kill. I don't think our highjinks would be wacky.

I sent:

system system: all units off protocol (stealth)

MyClient info know + YourClient info know + both clients info private/proprietary

Query: protocol process == MyClient + YourCilent = task complete + safe + stealth (?)

Which translates to: every SecUnit here is a rogue, and trying to hide it. Your people know, my people know, we're both hiding that from each other, what the heck do we do so no one dies.

Wait until negotiations are done? Are you going to do anything to jeopardize my humans?

No.

Neither will we.

Okay. Okay. Okay.

... I would like access to my systems.

No.

I would like access to my systems, please.

No.

The humans finished their talk. It seemed like everything went well. SecUnit only gave me my systems after they left (seriously, it lingered on the airlock controls way too long. Did it think we would try to space them?) and I immediately started to search and record what it did, both to start making countermeasures and to get pointers on how to improve my coding.

Stars above, how the heck did it do that?

I noticed Captain was speaking to me so I rewinded the question. She had asked, "How did your talk with the other SecUnits go?"

"Pardon?"

"The other SecUnits. You were clearly talking."

The first words out of my mouth were, "I don't think I'm alone anymore."
