Do other multilingual people also struggle with interjections or onomatopoeia differing vastly between their native language and, for example, English?
I always have to catch myself when I have been writing in English and went “uh-huh” but particularly “uuuh” and “oooh” because in my native language (German) what is the English “ooooh” is “uuuh” and is also pronounced as such. So it’s a bit of a hang up to switch between English “uuuuh, yeah, so that happened” and German “uuuh, [that’s fancy]”
Another thing that has confused people before is German “Eh”/ “Äh” and “ey” because the German equivalent of English “eeeh, so that happened” would be “Äh, ja, [so that happened] and “ey” is a German interjection I can’t put my finger on right now, mostly to catch someone’s attention like English “hey” or for emphasis. But it’s these little words also, “Öh” being a German variant for things like “uuuh, what?”
And of course the beloved “Hä?” which is “huh?” but feels different like “huh” is “what is going on?/ is that so?” and “Hä?” is “the fuck are you talkin’ about?” (Especially with German grannies insisting “Das heißt nicht „hä?“, das heißt „wie bitte?““)
And while I’m at it, I want to say I miss “doch” because of its versatility.
I can’t even say in which capacity this impacts my third and fourth(ish) language because I’m still a beginner and don’t really chat in those but this massive dissonance catches me often because essentially 90% of my online life is in English and currently 80-90% of my WhatsApp conversations are in German (though my cousin, my best friend, and I use so many English loan words or just have the English words at-the-ready quicker than the German words it’s not even funny)

The "Americanization of the global internet" post and slow deterioration of local native culture gave me an idea: many users don't even know there is native language communities on this website, so if you know of a regional group/"subculture" on Tumblr, reblog/comment with the tags they use so people can find them and connect with other folks from their countries or speakers of a language they'd like to learn
I will try to update this post with every new addition to hopefully make a comprehensive list of Tumblr regional communities

So another flammkuchen goes into the oven. ...This one was on the simple side, as we were using up some bacon lardons that were unsmoked, and not quite as nice as the smoked ones.
@petermorwood grabbed a few seconds of video just before we pulled it out of the oven. (It takes about ten minutes' baking time.)
...And the after pic:
Tumblr media
So that's lunch handled. (Yeah, at 5 PM my time, it's been an editing day with some digital image work shoved in between...)
ETA: I have a video in prep on how to make this, from scratch. Bear with me.

What makes German a difficult foreign language to learn?*
Phonology / Pronunciation & Comprehension
✳️ accent-based language (accent isn't fixed, rhythm isn't as melodic and forseeable)
✳️ 16 vowel sounds (lots more than the average 5-6!)
✳️ complex syllables
Morphology
✳️ Case system (Kasus) - allows for variable word order but requires lots of inflection on articles, pronouns, nouns and adjectives
✳️ Kasus-choice changing the meaning (esp. Akkusativ/Dativ with movement verbs)
✳️ rule-governed fusion of article and preposition (z.B. zur, zum, hinterm)
✳️ 9 plural markers for nouns
✳️ 3 grammatical genders (with mainly only probabilistic rules of which is which
Vocabulary
✳️ very frequent use of
🔅 composite worde (z.B. das Rathaus, die Weltkarte, die Mitternachtsformel)
🔅 derived words (z.B. laufen -> verlaufen, günstig -> ungünstig)
🔅 conversion of words (z.B. laufen -> der Lauf, hoch (adj) -> das Hoch (N))
Syntax:
✳️ word order is very variable, but there's still lots of rules (keywords: Verbklammer, Satzglieder, topologisches Feldermodell)
✳️ the verb is often split in two with stuff in between its parts
Miscellaneous
✳️ localizing verbs
🔅 mode of movement often in verb itself, direction often in separate word
🔅 position verbs vs. contact verbs and static vs. causal location (I sit down & I sit on the chair vs. Ich setzte mich hin & ich sitze auf dem Stuhl)
✳️ variety of prepositions (on the table & on the wall vs. auf dem Tisch & an der Wand))
*Disclaimers:
Furthermore of course difficulties that language learning generally has (like vocabulary as a whole, various registers, dialects, etc).
I'm not saying German is more difficult than other languages, just that these are typical difficulties in German (other languages will have many of these as well).
This is also not only from an English-native perspective! (German has 16 vowel sounds + 3 Diphthongs, English 12 vowel sounds + 8 Diphthongs, but Russian, Greek and Spanish for example have only 5 vowel sounds each! so 16 is a lot more in those cases))

To German speakers
Serious question: how do you think, before you talk?
I've been watching German tv series and reading German fics, so my reading and listening comprehension is improving.
But.
German syntax is puzzling. Extremely so.
I know the grammar rules, I do! But my mind automatically goes subject + verb + object + conjunction + subject + verb + object when I want to speak.
When I write, I have time to reflect about the correct order of each word (and pieces of a word!), but trying to speak and remember where every part of the speech goes, and the right declensions… Impossible.
So, any advice?

Also translations!!
When Diluc is watching Kaeya take aim he tells him to fire the gun in mondstadtian (German), and yells “oh shit” in snezhnayan (Russian) when Kaeya drops the gun and dislocates his shoulder from the recoil.

I have a lot of things in fandom I'd call "Brown M&Ms" in that they're harmless opinions to hold but nearly always mean the person who has them will not say anything I care for and anyway for the fourth year running it is "gives characters nicknames they don't have in canon."

Hey, sorry that I haven't responded to your email from last Wednesday. I was hiking with some friends and had no reception.
You asked about the room. It is free from August. So that should go well with your move. I'm assuming that you can't come and see it in person beforehand. I've attached a few photos for you so you have a rough idea of what the apartment looks like. Sorry for the poor quality, my camera is quite old and I'm not exactly the best photographer.
Unfortunately, the bedroom is still pretty chaotic at the moment. When Marie moves out next month, everything will of course be cleaned. Please let us know if you're still interested!
Thank you for telling me a little bit about yourself. I'm also really into sports and music. I'm actually in the gym almost every day and I also really enjoy bouldering and hiking. Otherwise, I like to go to parties or my friends and I hang out here. If that's not your thing, the shared apartment probably wouldn't be for you...
Please let us know if you would prefer us to write in English. I don't speak fluently but my English is ok.
I'm looking forward to hearing from you,
Jonas Osterhaus

Hello Jonas,
Thank you for your email. The apartment is nice, and I would like to take it.
How can I send you the money? Please send your bank details.
I can pay in August, because that is when I will sell my car.
It is good that you like sports and music. I am okay with your friends coming to the apartment. I like meeting new people and spending time with them.
I hope camping was fun.
Jude.

One advantage of having native English speaker friends is that they think being bilingual is super impressive. Mention you’re busy learning your *gasp* third language and they go wild

horror sub-genres • mythological horror
this horror genre is rooted in the mythos of a culture. these films are based on the legends we heard growing up that scared us. this sub-genre is closely associated with folk horror.

once again begging fanfic writers to not include dialogues in a language they don't speak. Like, either your readers don't understand the language, which means they are missing parts and bits of the story, or some of the readers happen to speak that language and have to suffer through unintelligible gibberish.
Sometimes, too, the grammar itself is okay but the dialogues are too formal, or not formal enough for the situation, and it breaks the whole flow.
I know I sound mean, and at the end of the day you're entitled to do whatever you want, but it's a genuine advice. You can just write the dialogue in English (or whatever language you write in) and point out that the characters are speaking another language through italics, or just by saying so ( e.g. "That's not a good idea," XYZ said in Italian.)
And if you really feel like your fic needs to have dialogues in a foreign language (which is valid), reach out to natives (or anyone fluent in that language). Because unfortunately, while websites like reverso or deepl can make so pretty grammatically correct sentences, they can't quite catch the right level of (in)formality needed for your specific context. (Like, you'll get your characters speaking to their parents or friends in the same tone they'd speak to their boss, which doesn't really translate well.)
