Billy Kid x Reader Headcanons ☆

CW: nothing, maybe a few suggestive jokes but everything is generally SFW :3 i’m super sleepy and writing this at 1am so bare with me when it comes to spelling and grammar :’)

Billy takes a lot of selfies, especially when on missions, and sends them to you. You don’t know what made him start doing this, but you save each and every one of them and you make sure to drop whatever you’re doing to ask him about it.

Billy is on the spectrum. Don’t ask me the logistics of it, yes he’s sophisticated AI, but hear me out! Though you like to indulge in some childhood nostalgia, you aren’t particularly fixated on watching just one media from your childhood. However, one of the medias you watched back in the day is called Starlight Knight. As soon as you told him you enjoyed that show, he would come to you to talk about it. It wasn’t all the time, of course, but whenever conservation went dry (in person or via DMs), he’d make it a thing to talk to you about it for hours. It didn’t annoy you, not in the slightest. It made you happy to see him so happy about the children’s show, and so you entertained it as much as you could.

When Billy texts, he uses old fashioned emoticons as punctuation. Think ‘ :3 , ^_^ , o_O ’ and then replace it everywhere a period, an exclamation point, or a question mark would be. So many emoticons…

Billy loves to play video games, especially at the arcade. He invites you, and usually you tag along. When you can’t, he sends a selfie of him making a sad face. He’d probably captions it something like ‘Missing my pookie.. 💔💔’

On that same note, Billy will pick up on vocabulary you use and steal it. So if you have a habit of saying ‘pookie’ ? That’s his now. He’s using it all the time.

Billy panics easy when it comes to you. not only when it comes to safety, but also when it comes to romantic scenarios. During times you hang out with Anby and Nicole, they spill all the details of how Billy went on a rampage to find the perfect flowers, or how Billy sat in a corner all morning whining about how he didn’t find the right color outfit for you. Things along those lines!

Sortve related, but Billy gets flustered easily. Especially when you make dirty jokes, most of which aren’t really directed at him. He doesn’t get the jokes at first, but when he does understand them, he reacts in such an over the top and dramatic manner. Flailing around, gasping really loud, whining, yknow the works! One time you made a joke about ‘whimpering audios’ and he didn’t understand it. For a while too! Once he asked enough people (Anby explained it to him), he went silent and locked himself in his room for a considerable amount of time. He wasn’t sad or anything, just… shocked.

Billy isn’t human, so he doesn’t necessarily get injured in the traditional sense. One time he came back from a commission with his arm all battered up. You never seen him so down in spirits! You were able to help him, luckily, because it was only one part on his arm that was damaged that really messed up the rest of it. You kissed his hand, and immediately after inspecting your handiwork, he stuck his hand out again. “I dunno.. my arm still feels wonky. How about another kiss for good measure?”

When you’re bored, you love to dress up as Billy. Well, you’re not really dressing like him, you’re just wearing his jacket. You also like to wear the jacket with certain outfits you think it would look best with. Since your boyfriend is so tall and broad in the arms, you mostly wore it as a shoulder drape in an odd anime fashion statement. Regardless, Billy loved to see you wear it.

Earlier I mentioned Billy loves to take selfies, but I forgot to mention how most of them include you, and despite having all of those selfies of himself, half of his camera roll is you. He likes to sneak pictures of you sometimes! It’s one of his more odder behaviors, but he takes such cinematic pictures of you, even when you’re wearing the worst outfits. You didn’t know how he did it, but it’s one of the things that made the random picture taking somewhat okay.

Billy loves hugs. Don’t ask me how it works in terms of comfort. I would assume it’s the equivalent of sleeping in a car. However, Billy does have plenty of plushies thanks to you, and you use those to your advantage… so it’s not all bad :)

You asked Billy to teach you how to sling guns, and the entire tutorial sesh was just him feeling every inch of your body, memorizing and admiring how you looked. He loved you. All of you! He thought he was being sneaky, but you knew (and secretly loved it too).

Billy loves to carry you on his back and walk around. All I’m saying is, he’s got handlebars on that jacket for a reason… this has to be one of them……

Billy loves stickers. Self Explanatory!

Billy loves giving you gifts. He puts your needs over his more than he should, but luckily you’re not in this relationship to take advantage of his immaturity and inexperience. You give back as much as you can.

Billy is clingy. Needed to type it out despite it being loud as hell in this list.

Billy cant cook. Not like he needs to anyways, but he wants to learn for you! So when you’re cooking, he watches close behind you and asks you every question he can think of.

Billy likes to ask why… a lot. It gets frustrating sometimes, but he genuinely wants to learn.

your hands delve down to grasp her plush thighs. a little moan nearly slips from your lips at the soft yet firmness of her creamy skin against the pads of your digits. a finger hooks around one of the straps clasped around her right thigh and teasingly pulled at it. nicole squirms a bit when the leather strap firmly falls back in place. a small groan escapes from her chest. “ d-don’t do that. . “ she finally utters between heated kisses that admittedly has her growing impatient.

“ what? sensitive, my baby? “ you’d ask in a sly tone, rubbing on her thighs. breath hitching, nicole adjusts herself on the counter.

“ i am not. i-i’m just a little sore from the commission we’ve did earlier, that’s all. “ she denies, her narrowed eyes boring into yours.

“ mhm, “ you don’t buy into her lie. it’s so obvious she is when she’s firmly squeezing her thighs either side of your hips. “ let me kiss them better then, nicole. “

a velvet blush taints her cheeks and again, she fails to hide the excitement sparkling in her eyes. she likes an open book that can never stay closed. “ n-no, i-it’s fine. we can’t do anymore here, billy and anby— “

you roll your eyes, “ you’ve made them go do a grocery run, knowing them, it’s gonna take them an hour to come back. “

she opens her mouth to speak but you abruptly kiss her slightly parted lips, swallowing her concerns. “ don’t be shy now, boss. “ you whisper sweetly, fiddling with the waistband of her jean shorts. “ i won’t do much. as your employee, let me please you, yeah? “

nicole pauses, staying silent as she pretends to think about it for a moment. she’s so full of shit, it’s cute.

“ okay, fine. .as your boss, i’ll accept your request.”she says with a smug smile on her swollen lips. you fight the urge to roll your eyes. “ stand up for me. “ and she does so without a second thought. you peck her lips before transitioning down to your knees. you leave a few chaste kisses on her stomach on the way down. nicole let out a pleased sigh, threading her fingers in your hair once you’re fully on your knees. your hand attaches itself on the back of her left thigh. “ god, this’d be a good position to eat you out in right now, nicole. “ you comment, dragging your warm lips up her inner thigh until you’ve met with one of many of her moles.

the pinkette bites the skin of her inner cheek, stopping herself from demanding you to do it right here and right now. but, she refuses to be seen desperate than she already is. all she could do was lean against the counter while you focus your attention on lathering her sore thighs with affection. with a heavy lidded gaze, nicole watch as you plant damp kisses to her thigh. she holds her breath when you plant a singular open mouth kiss right above her mole, near the ends of the fur of her jean shorts. damn, you’re such a tease.

your warm tongue lick a sloppy stripe up her creamy skin before you softly suckle on it, careful to not leave behind an obvious hickey. a hump forms in her throat when your eyes catches hers; she grips your hair a little tighter. don’t you give me that look— nicole thinks with pouty lips, flustered. arousal soaks her panties as you continue your ministrations on the other thigh. she tries to hide the slight trembling of her weakening legs but you notice. your hand rubs her firm calf in a comforting manner. unfortunately, you can’t do much with the right thigh due to the straps blocking your way. you can’t really undo them either without having to pull down her shorts. nicole notices it too and she starts to get increasingly irritated.

His Starlight

I was requested for write more Billy headcanons with a fem!s/o so here's some short snippets. So thank you for the request! I'll be opening requests after I finish another piece so letting you all know ahead.

⋈ Billy makes some strange decisions at time, either cuz he’s trying to be cheap in order to save more, or he’s just not thinking straight and makes an impromptu purchase. As his s/o, you’re able to reel him in and help him make smarter decisions that’ll leave him so grateful that you care as much to aid him. Of course, this doesn’t count when he decides to splurge on you, because his girlfriend deserves only the best.

⋈ The girls in the Cunning Hares have at least met you a couple times before, after all they do care for Billy so only want to know who his new girlfriend is. That being said, Nicole is probably the one who can see the benefits of keeping you around, only to drop them once she sees just how much you adore their android friend that they’ve started noticing changes in him that are for the better. He still is goofy and oftentimes causing a ruckus with the others, but he’s become more thoughtful and acknowledges when things are going wrong or when they need to make a decisive decision in their work or expenses. Nicole doesn’t mind having you come around often, as long as you don’t become another mouth to feed. 

⋈ Best part of having such a cute girlfriend is being able to binge watch movies together and go out on dates. His favorites being the ones where they explore Lumina Square and stop to take photos. Of course, he loves doing the iconic poses from his favorite shows and movies, impersonating the actors to the point that it embarrasses you but he does it in a loving matter. But he also loves taking photos of you, drinking coffee at the Tin man’s shop, fawning over the shop bangboos, or even experimenting with the makeup in the salon there. He has a whole file saved of his favorite moments from your dates. 

⋈ Of course, dating Billy has its cons. For one he is usually cold to the touch because he’s made of metal and need to have his joints lubricated. But no worries, he does his best to maintain himself and makes subtle changes that you wouldn’t have noticed otherwise. Like buying a heating module to help increase his body heat, though the dealer he bought it from was kinda sketchy and now he overheats too quickly just from seeing your cute face. And when it comes to lubrates, he gets only the finest of lubes to help him move to the best of his ability. A little too well as you’ll have him turning head at record speed when you call him. Maybe even trip over his own feet trying to catch up to you. 

⋈ Billy can be a fool but he’s your fool. He loves and cherishes every day he gets to spend with you; And whenever he’s in a pinch, down in the hollows completing the hardest of commissions all for the sake of getting by with the Cunning Hares, he can only think of how you’ll be waiting for him on the outside. Ready to give him the biggest hug and rewatch Oh~ Sweetie where now he no longer finds joy in admiring the main actress as you shine brighter than any other starlight knight.

Facts about the Cunning Hares for fans to grab, those facts are canon

Fact number 1, the car the Cunning Hares use has a name, Old Smokey.

Don't even think of them replacing it too

As you can see Billy is really attached to her. Don't break his heart please.

Fact number 2, the Cunning Hares have a tradition that when they do a successful commission they have celebrative snacks, per Nicole's orders.

Oh and yes Nicole actually gives Anby a list that Anby actually follows, and it's not her appetite, it's really Nicole's. XD

Pretty sure none of those are healthy, but again, snacks. XD

Ok so this one is general to Thirens but given Nekomata is one, this one concerns her, I'm surprised there is that in the game.

Thirens are intolerent to caffeine, so if Nekomata drinks coffee she might get heart problems in the future, guess that also applies to Hoshimi Miyabi and Ben Bigger.

And those were my little canon facts literally taken from the games that I took pictures of when playing the games concerning the Cunning Hares, so I hope it helps some writters if you wonder about them, the car is Old Smokey, they don't want to replace her, they have celebrative snacks for when they do a successful job and Nekomata shouldn't be allowed anywhere near coffee.

Always little details like that that builds up more of the world, seems a bit pointless but I always feel closer to the characters knowing tiny little thing like that, I love how Billy is protective of their ride and Nicole likes to treat them to snacks for when the team does a good job (even if Billy can't eat but Nekomata will appreciate I'm sure) and Nekomata will have health trouble if she has coffee, I feel closer to them. <3

Edit: So I reread the last photo, it actually says that SOME Thirens are intolerant to coffee, so maybe Nekomata is safe, or maybe not either, it might be something that develop over time, and maybe Ben and Lycaon are safe too, or not and it does says that it's what the latest research says, so it's recent news that probably hasn't been seen by every thirens yet. But well, now it's more muddled, so if people want to make Ben, Nekomata and Lycaon intolerant to coffee in their fics, well guess you can have it your way for your stories sake.

Vampire Yuri Manga 'Kiss the Scars of the Girls' Released

On Tuesday, Yen Press released the first volume of Aya Haruhana's supernatural school drama manga Kiss the Scars of the Girls (Shoujo-tachi no Kizuato ni Kuchizuke wo).

The publisher describes the manga:

“I’m sure someday, I’ll get you to look my way.” Danger and uncertainty are common for a young vampire, which is why Emille will be assigned a “Big Sister” on her fourteenth birthday, like all the girls at her school. Deep within a secluded forest, her sister will teach her how to hunt and safely feed on humans. Learning to rely on each other for survival cultivates a deep relationship comparable to that between family-but does theirs have the potential to evolve into something more?"

Kiss the Scars of the Girls was serialized on Comic Newtype from December 2021 until its conclusion in June 2023. Kadokawa publishes three collected volumes of the series in Japan. Yen Press plans to release the second English volume on April 16, 2024.

The manga is translated into English by Erin Husson with lettering by Nicole Roderick.

What are your head cannons for characters in different factions within Zenless being friends? (Example: Lucy and Corin being friends because they have the shared experience of not great parents based on what the game reveals).

Ooooooh I hadn’t thought about this til now—

I’m gonna try and include as many characters as possible in this!!

So first off, everyone in the Cunning Hares gets along with everyone in The Sons of Calydon. Considering Billy used to be a former member of the gang, I’d say the two work pretty closely/know each other fairly well. For specifics, I think Anby and Caesar have the same mindset when it comes to combat, and Nekomata and Burnice bond over being chaos gremlins. Nekomata would also love Piper, nap taking gang go Brrrr. I think the only ones who wouldn’t like each other would be Nicole and Lucy, and they tend to just hate each other in secret/behind everyone else’s back’s cause they care about their own groups too much.

Similarly, I think Belobog also has similar ties to Victoria Housekeeping. Lycaon and Corin both like Ben, but for different reasons. Lycaon likes Ben due to thiren solidarity, and Lycaon also thinks he’s a pretty decent guy who’s chill and all that. If Belobog ever needs a commission from Victoria, or vice versa, the transactions are made between those two.

Corin likes him cause of how gentle and understanding he is. She sees a lot of her new father figure Lycaon in him.

As much as it pains me to say it, I don’t really think anyone in Victoria Housekeeping would like the company of the more criminally aligned factions (so far being the Cunning Hares and Sons of Calydon). Sure, Victoria Housekeeping may not have the greatest moral compass, but they do have a reputation to uphold.

The only one I think does make sense is Corin and Nekomata considering their actions in canon. Maaaaaybeee if you squint, I can see Anby and Ellen getting along, too

Seth being the himbo that he is would definitely befriend Rina on accident. Like, she would just be doing the mind manipulation stuff and being super condescending and shit, and he’d be none the wiser and think her insults to be genuine compliments.

And obviously because of that, I think Rina and Jane would also be besties. Gaslight gatekeep girlboss solidarity.

Lycaon and Qingyi I think would also get along at least somewhat well, considering both are very peepaw coded characters. Lycaon also deems it good to have at least one cop friend for emergencies.

Soldier 11 often works with NEPS, but hasn’t been able to form a close bond with anyone outside of Phaethon due to how insanely busy she always is. She’d definitely like Qingyi the most if given the time to actually hang out with the NEPS faction.

Seth, if ever given the chance, would also probably like Anton’s company. The two have similar moral compasses and even more similar himbo mindsets.

Anton would also love Billy for the same reasons. He has to keep their friendship somewhat hidden though, lest Grace finds out Billy exists and tries to cut him open to see how he works.

Piper seems to be the mechanic of the Sons of Calydon group, so I think she’d get along with at least Koleda and Anton from Belobog. Solidarity in working with big machinery and all that y’know?

Soukaku would definitely be friends with Burnice, no explanation needed. Chaos gremlin x chaos gremlin.

Harumasa and Seth probably have a history together the same way Zhu Yuan and Miyabi do.

Until they reveal more about her, I don’t really know what to say about Yanagi, but I think she’d probably get along with people like Lycaon and Qingyi

I ran into Lighter once in Lumina square and he had dialogue about being kinda shy so y’know what, fuck it, anxious mf solidarity between him and Corin. Let the tall scary looking biker guy have social anxiety and let it be the most normal thing ever please Hoyo I beg do not make him like fucking Mika from genshin

I really hope they officially reveal the idol/livestreamer faction, as well as the vampire guy in Lycaon’s story quest soon, cause I’d love to see how their personalities are, and how they’d fit in with the rest of the cast

Would anyone who's better than me at Zenless Zone Zero be able to tell me why my Zhu Yuan just isn't doing a whole lot of damage? People keep saying she does more damage than Ellen but for me she's exceedingly weak and I'm having a hard time with Ether oriented commissions as a result. I think I just don't understand building characters very well in this game :[ Current team for her is Zhu Yuan, Qingyi, Nicole with Resonaboo

ZZZ: Meet... The Cunning Hares aka Gentle House

The leader of the odd-job agency the Cunning Hares, who accept all kinds of Hollow-related commissions. She's been on the streets for many years, and has a reputation among her peers as being exceedingly cunning. She's been blacklisted by many clients due to her all-or nothing approach. She loves money, but is surprisingly bad at managing it, leaving the Cunning Hares constantly on the edge of bankruptcy and owing many debts.

Billy Kid, A rank, Attack, Physical attribute

A handsome cyborg with a casual and carefree personality. He's an avid fan of the Starlight Knight show, not only referring to himself as one of the Starlight Knights, but repeating many classic lines from the show. Refers to his pair of special custom-made high-caliber revolvers as "the girls". They appear to have been a gift from an old friend. He may look unreliable, but once he gets serious Billy can take on any challenge.

Anby Demara, A rank, Stun, Electric Attribute

A mysterious young girl who never talks about her past, almost as if she didn't have one. She is calm and collected, and unusually competent and efficient in combat, almost as if she'd had years of training. In an unexpected incident, Nicole brought her back to the Cunning Hares, and she has an emotional independence on her ever since. She loves watching movies, but due to certain lack of common sense she seems to almost think them real-life stories.

Nekomiya Mana, S rank, Attack, Physical attribute

"The best mackerel is always the one you haven't eaten yet~" — Nekomiya Mana. Spirited and mischievous, she likes to play tricks on others. Your wallet is her wallet. (Really... It's hers now.) Athletic and daring, no Hollow is too dangerous for her. "Cats love fish" is actually an incorrect stereotype. But Nekomata does love fish... She's seen a lot of cat-astrophy and "curiosity killed the cat" moments, and seen many a secret that can't be told.

How much do you charge for commissions?

I charge $15 per hour!

I do digital art, fanart, book covers (yes, fanfic covers included), graphic design, logos, business cards, acrylic paint, watercolor paint, washi tape art, Minecraft skins, custom stickers, etc.

I accept PayPal, Venmo, CashApp, Zelle, and I'm working on a Stripe account.

"How many hours does it take to complete a comm?"

That depends on the nature of the comm. Here are some of mine from this year:

1 HOUR ($15) - These were commissioned by CrustySoap. These drawings took roughly an hour each. Generally speaking, scanned sketches and scanned sketches with flat colors are my quickest styles. If you're on a budget, this may be the style for you.

2. 2.48 HOURS ($37.20) - This one was commissioned by Ian. She wanted a self portrait based on one of her outfits. The background is made of a recycled filter made in one of my previous drawings.

3. Roughly 8.46 HOURS ($127~) - Commissioned by my good friend Nicole Straussman-Allen for her husband's bday. She approached me with the prompt of having Link from TTOK and Solid Snake from Metal Gear Solid shaking prosthetic hands. Since they have the hands on the same side, I suggested a fist bump instead, to which she heartily agreed. The result is something I'm very proud of.

However, these are not all the art styles I can do.

I was also commissioned by none other than Avi Roque this year! Their prompt was to create a physical painting/sketch of a scene from The Owl House. Disclaimer: I collected $50 + shipping for this painting - the prices listed on my website are approximately such, but as of this year they are currently out of date.

As with anything I make, $15/hour is the charge.

Here's how I operate commissions:

Think of a character(s) you want me to draw and in what style. This can be a style I've already drawn in or one you'd like me to emulate. If you're not sure, I can give you recommendations based on your budget and aesthetic preferences. I can draw backgrounds as well, or even use a photo (either yours or mine) as a background.

From there, I'll give you a time estimate on how long it'll take. This varies greatly depending on the chosen art style and complexity of the comm.

Once we agree on the estimated price and style, that is when I begin timing myself as I work on your comm. I count strictly the hours I am working on the comm - not days between drawing sessions.

I'll send you work in progress photos/screenshots throughout. If you see something you'd like changed, it's better to let me know sooner rather than later so I can reduce the time needed to make adjustments.

Once you're satisfied with the final result, that's when payment is due. I take PayPal, Venmo, CashApp, and Zelle. I'm working on adding Stripe as well.

It is then that I'll email you the final result in high resolution and your preferred file format. NOTE: I also do painting commissions. If you would like a physical painting shipped to you, you will be responsible for shipping charges (thankfully my post office is relatively cheap, so depending on the size you're looking at an additional fee of $5-10, if that).

nicole loves to be in charge, she is the leader of the infamous cunning hares after all and she has a big ass ego. in private though, that proud facade of hers becomes a little flimsy to temptation—especially when you’re submissive under her. cw: gn with a dick, teasing, foot job, girlfailure and girlboss nicole!

the heel of nicole’s foot meanly digs into the growing tent in your pants. laid out on your back near the end of her bed, legs hanging from the mattress, you squirm and groan in a mix of pain and pleasure. your back arches, hips shamelessly buckling to the dry friction of her bare foot. cheeks red, nicole sneers at your groaning, resting her hands on her hips. “ y-you can’t bark about how you would be the better leader of the cunning hares and all it took for you to submit was by me doing this, “ nicole adds more pressure to your bulge, provoking a loud half-moan from you. what a loser you are, complaining and jabbing at her leadership because of some stupid ass agent not giving detailed considerations for the commission. they nearly got ambushed by hollows because of him, not her.

you’re such a loser—a loser who looks easy to take apart with just the work of her hands. a loser who would look so appetizing submissive and begging for her forgiveness. although the thought of it stokes her ego, nicole can’t help but feel embarrassed and intrigued; does she stop here?—how far can she go?

🌿how does creating make you feel?

Ahh... wow... well, sometimes during, a little stressed, ngl. That's probably why I enjoy working on projects with friends and sharing things so much- having someone to bounce ideas off of and work with helps take some of the pressure off, but I also don't want to let them down, so it keeps me engaged even when things get challenging. Then after a project gets shared/posted, there's an immediate sense of relief- like whew! I can take it easy for a day. (Or the, "nobody ever ask me for anything ever again" feeling haha). And over time, that relief turns to satisfaction, especially as I look back after a long time and thing, "Wow, yeah. I did that."

💝what is a fic that got a different response than you were expecting?

I wrote a fic for a recent Metal Gear Solid zine called, "Dance Like You Want to Win", (an Evangelion reference I've been dying to use in an MGS fic for years). It was based on an idea I had for a story that was over a decade old, and I actually found part of my original draft collecting dust in the bottom of my google docs. I hadn't written for the fandom in a LONG time, and I was really worried about my characterization, the world-building, and having to write *action* scenes in a mission fic, neither of which are my forte. I was really worried people were going to read it and think I'd lost my touch.

But in the end, people liked it! I actually got compliments on the banter and overall, way more love than I was expecting, even some comments when I finally posted it to AO3. It felt like old times, and that really warmed my heart. <3

The story in question is "Kind of Cool" which is a mashup of sorts of two webcomics by Kieran Thompson, "This is the Worst Idea You've Ever Had" and "Cuanta Vida" which was a TF2 fancomic. I had to read over it, because I'd forgotten what it was about, honestly. XD

The TLDR is that two characters in TITWIYEH (a modern magic story) had a few familiar faces from Cuanta Vida (with names! and much happier fates), so I had two characters discussing their non-serious theory that linguistics professor Jordi Betrand was actually a French spy- the joke being that the man is so softspoken and gentle, he's clearly nothing of the sort. I did get a chuckle from myself at this

The young man shook his head again, running weary fingers through his shaggy blonde hair. "Nicole, Professor Jordi Bertrand has got to be the most unassuming and boring man on the entire planet. I doubt he's ever experienced anything more exciting than a birthday party in his entire life- and not even a surprise party! A lot of the humor in this fic is reliant on people having read both comics... which explains why it has a whopping 2 kudos, but even after a decade, the easter eggs are still pinging in my brain, so I guess that means I hid some good ones. XD

Oh, gosh. Hm. Sometimes, I'm a big believer in "being the change you want to see in the world" when it comes to fandom and creative works. If you can't find the thing you want, make it- and that includes your own hype. If I want a story to get a little more attention, I might do some artwork for it (or commission some if I'm able) to hopefully pique people's interest. I might also do stuff like record podfics or something. But usually, the "next step" is to just move on to the next project and hope it gets a warmer reception.

I've found that trying to work too hard to cater to other people's wants just to get the reception I want doesn't always go to plan- or worse, I might get lots of comments and kudos, but it feels hollow because I feel like I'm being told, "you're really good at knowing what we will like" instead of "you are really good at writing and expressing this idea"- so over time, I've gotten a lot more comfortable making things for me. That way I'm guaranteed at least one person will like it, in the end. And even my "weird" fics are eventually found by people who appreciate them- and that really means a lot.

BRUSSELS (AP) — Abdesalem Lassoued had been denied residency in four European countries by the time he chased two Swedish men into a building in Brussels this week and gunned them down at close range with a semiautomatic rifle.

The 45-year-old Tunisian arrived on the Italian island of Lampedusa in a smuggler’s boat in 2011. He spent jail time in Sweden and was refused entry to Norway. At one point Italy flagged him as a security threat. Two years ago, Belgium rejected his asylum claim and he disappeared off the map.

Until Monday night, that is, when he killed the two Swedes, wounded a third and forced the lockdown of more than 35,000 people in a soccer stadium where they had gathered to watch Belgium play Sweden. In a video posted online, he claimed to be inspired by the Islamic State group.

Within days he has become the new face of the European Union’s campaign to toughen border controls, rapidly deport people and allow the police and security agencies to exchange information more efficiently.

“It’s important that those individuals that could be a security threat to our citizens, to our Union, have to be returned forcefully, immediately,” EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson told reporters on Thursday, as EU interior ministers met in Luxembourg.

Only around one in four people whose asylum applications are denied ever leave or are deported from the 27-nation bloc. Often the countries they come from, including Tunisia, are reluctant to take them back.

With EU countries constantly bickering over how to manage migration – their differences lie at the heart of one of the bloc’s biggest political crises – the European Commission has sought to outsource the challenge.

The EU’s executive branch has helped to seal deals with Turkey and Tunisia to persuade these countries to stop people from the Middle East or Africa – not to mention their own nationals – from trying to enter Europe, as they did in large numbers in 2015.

About 25 countries that people leave or transit to get to Europe are of concern. Egypt is the next country on the list. The commission is already helping to locate and pay for new boats for the Egyptian coastguard.

Belgium’s top migration official, Nicole de Moor, said that countries refusing to take back their nationals must be made to cooperate.

“The terrorist that committed an attack in Brussels on Monday had asked for asylum in four different European countries, and every time he was rejected because he did not qualify for protection,” de Moor said.

The EU does have coercive tools at its disposal. The commission has used visas as a lever, making it harder, more time-consuming and costly for the citizens of migration source countries to gain entry to Europe’s ID check-free zone – the 27-country space known as the Schengen area.

Thanks to this, Johansson said, the EU now has “much better cooperation” on deportation with Iraq, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Senegal.

The shooter Lassoued’s case was also marked by other failures. He applied for asylum in Belgium in 2019. His application was rejected a year later, and a deportation order was issued in 2021. Officials said this week that he couldn’t be found, as they had no address for him.

Within a few hours, admittedly with public help, prosecutors conceded, the authorities had discovered where he lived. He was shot dead by police at a café nearby the following morning when they tried to arrest him.

“It turns out that the individual had been convicted and had served time in a Swedish prison, which was unknown to our police and judiciary,” Belgian Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden told reporters.

“We need to improve the information exchange on these kinds of things. The man apparently arrived in Italy in 2011 (and) wandered around Europe for 12 years,” she said. Migration services and the police must share information, she said, “to ensure that this cannot happen.”

The clamor for tougher laws and better intelligence sharing are fresh, but the problem is not new. Lassoued’s case resembles that of another Tunisian man, Anis Amri, who drove a truck into a Christmas market in Berlin in 2016, killing 12 people and injuring 56 others.

German authorities tried to deport Amri after his asylum application was rejected but were unable to because he lacked valid identity papers. Tunisia had denied that he was a citizen.

On Tuesday, after leading security talks throughout the night while the hunt for Lassoued went on, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo loosened his tie from around his collar as he answered a reporter’s thorny question about the failings of Belgium’s police, justice and migration services.

“An order to leave the territory must become more binding that it is now,” De Croo conceded. “We have to respect the decisions that we take.”

This comes across as kind of cheap and nasty, it is intended as a gift book but I like and collect quotebooks so I picked it up. When I say it looks cheap it's the illustrations and design, the only thing that makes the book unique. The illustrations are by Nicole Cicak with the design by Mietta Yans. At first glance, the design is pretty and feminine while simultaneously being youthful and fun. Nicole Cicak's illustrations do suit the quotes at least some of them, both the quotes and the women saying them but there aren't enough of them. The issues are not hers, she was at least an ok choice for the artist choice. Mietta Yans does what she can with what can feel like limited illustrations to work with. There are quite a few duplicates that are obvious, rainbows and pencils. So why do I say that makes it looks cheap? It honestly looks like Harper by Design was uninterested in properly funding the creation of this, like they didn't want to commission Nicole Cicak to create any more illustrations than absolutely necessary. I know it shouldn't be the focus of a review but it was off-putting when there were so many options for potential ways to option this.

While I did have clear issues with the design, I have no such reservations about the quote selections. This is an Australian book and it does show at points, with quotes included by Australian women that are otherwise unlikely to be included such as Julia Gillard, Penny Wong, Liz Cambage, Miles Franklin and Jacinda Ardern (? maybe her international profile is rising). The topics cover a range of topics such as knowledge, positivity and leadership.

“The Conversation” by Francis Ford Coppola. WEEK THREE.

The movie “The Conversation,” written by Francis Ford Coppola, in 1974, is a cerebral psychological film set in San Fransisco, California. The film follows Harry Caul, an intel bugger who lives a lonely yet intensely obsessional life, seeming only to focus on his career and its effects on himself and others. Harry is commissioned to follow an unknown couple, with the first scene playing out in San Francisco Square, the intel guys hidden in a pioneer glass van. Below is a photo of the couple being followed by Harry and his team attached with all sorts of listening gadgets. The couple's conversation is curiously mundane. A quote that is played in Harry's head many times throughout the film is one of the women that he is surveying in this scene. In it, she and the gentleman see a homeless man on a bench, to which the woman replies " He was once somebody's baby boy". I believe this struck Harry as intimate to his own life and Coppola may potentially have been relating this homeless man with Harry's own desperation.

I found Harry, Gene Hackman's character in this film significant because his intensity seems so streamlined, he could not seem to build human relationships, yet he does portray an intense sense of consciousness and guilt towards humanity. The Los Angeles Times describes the character Harry as “Brilliant, obsessive, deeply religious and possibly damaged, Harry is a master of surveillance technology, a legend his competitors call “the best bar none.” I agree with this and found Harry’s religious element to his character surprising and possibly his connection with a feeling of solace or stability. At one point Harry goes to confession pleading with the priest to be forgiven for hurting people inadvertently and for taking the Lord's name in vain.

Below is a photo of Harry Caul and a love interest of his, Amy, (played by actress Teri Garr). This was a scene that really stood out to me. It is his birthday in this scene. Harry shows up at Amy's apartment with a bottle of wine. She asks for him to open up to her for his birthday, to tell her a secret, to which he replies "I don't have any secrets." I found this interesting because Amy, although vying for Harry's intimacy is not able to break him emotionally. This shows his possible inability to separate himself from his work or personal demons. Harry eventually leaves Amy's building. As Harry walks out the door Amy dejectedly states, "I don't think I'm going to wait for you anymore."

The film has a very dream-like state. In one scene Harry is literally in a dream talking to one of his bugging subjects, (the woman of the couple in San Fransisco Square). In this scene, he says to her "I am not afraid of death, I am afraid of murder." This stuck out as his intense fear of his subject's demise. One of Harry's "east coast colleagues" mentions in another scene as they are having drinks that Harry was once in a case in which a family was murdered after his tapes were turned in. Harry seems to have had to compartmentalize this horror. Coppola could have been relating this to the United States and the separation between what is "right" and what we turn an eye to, specifically in 1974 shown in the Watergate scandal. I found this quote from Rotten Tomatoes to summarize my sentiments perfectly toward this film “As a thriller alone, The Conversation would be worth our attention. But as a thriller which also expresses our actual and collective nightmares, it absolutely demands it.” (Rotten Tomatoes). At a time when Watergate and the Nixion scandal were taking place across international waters, another scandal was at the forefront in Germany where German spy Günter Guillaume, who worked with Federal Chancellor, Willy Brant, was arrested for spying and intel gathering. This scandal caused Willy Brant to step down from his role as chancellor. There is an article below of the details.

These historical events among potentially many other reasons gave Coppola a stage to highlight the importance of privacy and also the swiftness by which it can be taken. Mr. Caul's boss, who is only known as "the director" throughout the film shows the illusive nature of bugging. Many of those gathering intel may not be aware, themselves of the intelligence or damage that will be accumulated as a product of their work. Harry Caul, on the other hand, seemed very aware of his hand in the damage that he could and had caused. The nature of the character "the director" was never apparent, it seemed to be a cheating wife ordeal, with one scene Harry delusionally believing he sees the wife being murdered. The very last scene shows Harry Caul ripping his apartment to shreds, even smashing a Virgin Mary statue. Harry's religion seemed his solace, this smashing of Mary symbolically seemed to convey that all faith and solace were lost to Harry at this point. The closing scene fades with Harry playing the saxophone alone in his room, maybe Coppola's homage to the power of music, signaling it may be the only thing left to heal or comfort him.
