nigel will go three entire months without so much as even smirking or letting happiness touch his eyes just to see a dead body or to get invited to go grave “exploring” with alex and will grin from ear to ear the entire walk there.

If I had a quid for every time a bigoted right-wing British politician who actively ruined thousands of lives during a difficult time had his actions forgiven by the British public because he went on I’m A Celebrity: Get Me Out of Here! and ate monkey testicles or some shit, I’d have £2. Which isn’t a lot but it’s fucking depressing that it’s happened twice

World Elephant Day
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Happy World Elephant Day! Observed annually on August 12th, World Elephant Day honors these magnificent creatures by calling attention to the many threats they face and working towards conservation efforts. Organizers of the day ask people to remember elephants’ human-like traits of empathy, self-awareness, and social intelligence and to “experience elephants in non-exploitive and sustainable environments where elephants can thrive under care and protection.”
Photographer Dick Blau and historian Nigel Rothfels, both faculty members here at UW-Milwaukee, explore the relationship between captive elephants and their caretakers in their book Elephant House. Rothfels shares his and Blau’s intention to “photograph the elephants in their actual circumstances and not try to hide the fact of their captivity, nor try to score points for either side of the argument about whether elephants should be housed in zoological gardens.” The result is an intimate look into the lives of elephants, their keepers, and habitat at the Oregon Zoo. Elephant House was published by The Pennsylvania State University Press in 2015. It features fifty-seven color photographs by Blau, an essay by Rothfels, and forward by Oregon Zoo’s retired elephant expert Mike Keele.
Elephant House is part of our UWM Authors Collection.

Quick, tangible change will see off the hard right – these are the things Labour must do now
“Fourteen years of austerity, economic incompetence and corruption under the Conservatives created the disillusionment and alienation from politics that Farage has been able to feed off. With a change of government, his focus now will be on damaging Labour.
“People will be relatively patient, but will want to see some early initial progress on a number of fronts – and significant results by at least the midterm of this government ... To guard against a rise of the hard right here, the left has to secure a wave of progressive policy delivery, and to start soon ...
“With 14 million people, including 4.3 million children, now living in poverty, an early win in the implementation of the anti-poverty strategy Labour committed to in its manifesto would be secured by the scrapping of the brutal two-child benefit cap, lifting 300,000 children out of poverty ...
“The wages of many workers have been effectively frozen since 2008 and there has been a widespread extension of insecure and often precarious work across the economy. Labour’s commitment to introduce its new deal for workers in its first 100 days could transform the lives of people at work, and address the scourge of low pay and insecure employment, but to be effective it has to be comprehensive with no further watering down ...
“People know how much pressure our public services have been put under by Conservative austerity, but will want to see change. They will support reform that puts control into the hands of the frontline professionals, but will react to reform that privatises and enables companies to profiteer, fuelling Farage’s claim of the corporate capture of the Labour party.
“Realistically, large-scale investment is needed ... We are at a defining moment not just for the new Labour government but for the politics of our country. Beware the danger but recognise the potential.”

🚨🚨The UK government is being cruel to migrants and Palestinian refugees.🚨🚨
They have ruled out a visa scheme for Palestinian families, which shows a double standard since their is a visa scheme for Ukrainian families.
They are also planning to not allow any migrant who crossed the channel "illegally" to ever claim asylum.
I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE UK citizens to email their Member of parliament about these issues, your anger about it, and demand that the government is pressed about these issues
An example email is below for one of these issues. Also, a website to find your mp is below, too.
Please reblog and share this post for awareness.
(Remember to include your full name, postcode, and address at the end of your email)

honestly actually actually you think sam visited her usual killing grounds when she went into hiding and found hundreds of messily dug holes and it was surrounded with spilled paint in certain areas or if it was like. a sizable hastily dug mound. and she doesn't fear death itself she is death but seeing the disorder- the chaotic evil of someone below her. its almost like an open grave asking her to get in. you know.

i want a world state and global parliament not for bland peace-and-love-on-planet-earth reasons but because i think if all eight billion humans were voting in a worldwide election we would get insane politics out of it. even better if to encourage cross-regional solidarity it's, like, 2000 at-large seats with no threshold.
i'm imagining you have like the world green party and the chinese communist party and the democrats and republicans are there because america is big enough to make that work. and of course the muslim brotherhood. there are fifty tiny communist parties and they all hate each other. like 20% of the parliament is solidly held by the Abolish the World Government party (leader: Nigel Farage). sinn fein has a couple of seats and nobody is sure why.

After college, he came out as transgender and began testosterone therapy. He said his experience trying to navigate the gender binary around that time helped push him toward a career in activism. “When I started taking T [testosterone], I wanted to pass — I wanted to be binary,” he said. “I came to realize the limitations of my body simply because of the intersex trait that I have, and I knew that in order to create a world in which I want to exist, it was required for me to step out as an intersex activist.” For Wall, the institutionalized enforcement of the gender binary is just another example of the oppressive systems of power he studied as a history major at the College. “History is told from the perspective of the victors,” he said. “I saw again and again that the people who are most marginalized are overwritten.” With that in mind, Wall said he hopes to shed light on the struggles of intersex people everywhere by sharing his own story. He said he has given a lot of thought to the importance of personal stories as tools of activism. “At birth, a narrative for my life was prescribed for me without my consent,” he said. “Doctors tried to write a narrative on my body, and it’s a narrative that they write for a lot of intersex people. For me, it’s important to tell my truth: the truth of what happened to my body, and the truth of what happens to so many people.”
“I’m driven by my desire for the liberation and dignity of all the communities that I care about— the dignity of Black people; the dignity of queer people; the dignity of intersex people; the dignity of all marginalized people,” he said.
“I think I will do this work as long as I live,” he said. “I am committed to a vision where there will be an end to medically unnecessary intersex surgeries in the United States. It’s going to take time to get there, but I’m willing to go as far as I need to go in order to achieve that, while building the capacity of activists to continue that work.”
Sean Saifa M. Wall ’01 reflects on time as intersex activist by Nigel Jaffe for The Williams Record (2019)
