Hi, sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm in a bit of a pickle? I've always enjoyed reading multiple stories with the same kind of premise or exploring the same au in a different way. And quite often I'll come across a concept in another story that I like or inspires me, but want to write it in a different way. But in recent years I've had fandom friends that find people doing that to be basically 'copying' or even bordering on art theft? And now I'm almost petrified to write any of these stories because I'm concerned the author of a similiar story might come and claim I'm copying them. I love the 'yay two cakes!' idea, but some other writers are (understandably) protective of their ideas and aus and I don't want to push anyone's buttons. Is there a strict etiquette to these things?
So here's the thing, anon. I'm gonna be straight* with you. I do not understand fanfiction authors who have a problem with people writing a similar premise to theirs. The whole point of fanfic is to take someone's idea and then do your own twist on it.
To me, copying a fic is taking the exact same story and switching the names or something similarly egregious. I once wrote a story at the same time as another author that included all of these elements in common: College AU, Sex Because Science, Friends to Lovers, researching orgasms, measuring arousal with a watch-like device, classmates being too nosey, pranks, and probably other things that I'm not remembering because this was like 10 years ago. Neither one of us was copying the other. We just had a really similar idea that we both happened to write.
It was that kinda ship, what can I say?
Authors who have that reaction have probably had poor experiences in the past and are being overly vigilant (or even aggressive) as a result. Either that, or they are in a social group with an author who is acting like that, and they've been influenced by them to feel the same way.
At least some of the time, the protective instinct is based on comparing the two stories and seeing who has more comments and kudos and hits. Or believing that the fact that there are 2 similar stories means that fewer people will end up reading both of them. That's a common type of insecurity and/or anxiety amongst creators as a whole, and it's just manifest in this case around inspired by works.
We're all playing with dolls here, but if that doll belongs to a fellow fan (like an OC or an entirely new world, for example) then you really should ask if you can borrow it first.
When it comes to plots and headcanons, though, the polite thing to do is to reach out to the author if you're worried your idea is too similar to theirs, or just use the "inspired by" link if you feel like your story stands on its own. And remember, you can shout people out in the author's notes and even link to a tumblr post if that's where your idea came from.
I'm 10000% in favour of crediting where an idea came from. I'm more wary of claiming sole ownership. That's kind of an Anne Rice move.

would u ever write jy w/ a reader who was a part of the high cloud quintet? ig u would say sextet here (insert sex joke) but just curious!!!
i would, maybe. i have this idea of a very short fic bordering on less than 10 chapters if possible surrounding the idea, though.
like something to do with lan, how they pierced the sky, and you are a piece of it that holds the skies together for the xianzhou. something like that.
it would be unbridled angst because i can. this post is so fucking long sorry. i definitely don’t have problems…
i think what would hurt the most is that jingliu would’ve accepted you into the hcq had you been able to join them.
something something, you wanted to stay, but if you remained here, the sky wouldn’t be able to hold itself together anymore, and the stars would fall, and the xianzhou would perish. so, you return to the sky, and hold it together, because that’s what you are: a fragment of the stars.
you definitely knew them all.
yingxing crafted you a weapon on the basis that maybe if he finished it, you’d return. dan feng would be so so happy to see you again, with that pleasant little smile he always wore (and sometimes if he thinks it’s appropriate he’ll let you examine his tail).
you did not return. not in his lifetime, at least.
jingliu would’ve trained you in the art of the sword. not to the extent of jing yuan, but enough to put up a decent fight. so, if none of them were there to help you, at least you could help yourself.
baiheng would’ve been like the fun aunt, to be honest. always up for a good chat, telling you stories about her travels across the galaxy. throws in a little “don’t tell jingliu, but i think you’d be better at archery, than swordsmanship.”
and jing yuan, oh boy. you two would always sneak away and talk and lie together and be idiots. he’s young, only barely creeping towards one hundred, but so are you, and he brings you to places he loves to show them to you.
there’s one particular spot he loves more than the rest.
there’s a little path in an abandoned stretch of trees towards the edge of the luofu ship. the path is barely visible amidst the tall grass, but jing yuan shows you through every step of the way until you both come into a clearing. it’s a field of flowers. private, closed off, with enough sunlight to keep the area warm. and it’s beautiful.
if you die, jing yuan buries you there. he also buries what remained of baiheng, and carves yingxing, jingliu, and dan feng’s names into headstones as a memoir of the past.
if you do return, for whatever reason it may be, it has been centuries. centuries are long enough to forget, as everything yields to time. wherever you have been, it has been long enough to forget.
returning is odd. the xianzhou luofu has changed, as have the other ships. you’re not sure how long it has been, and you’re not sure why you’re trekking this particular path. it feels familiar, and you have the faintest notion that there is supposed to be someone at the end of wherever this path leads.
who it is, you’re not sure. perhaps, if they are there, they can provide you an answer. maybe they can even tell you who you are, and what purpose you serve, other than to keep the sky together.
jing yuan never changed this area. not only was it his favourite, but he, as well as his old friends, had clung to the idea that you would return eventually.
if he changed it, jing yuan feared you’d forget even more than you already had. so, he kept it the same.
at the end of the path, for your first return is not a person. there’s nobody here, but four headstones buried in the grass. you read the names, but there is nothing. you don’t remember these people, but still your heart twists, as if you should have known them.
so, with grief heavy in your heart, you return to the sky.
the next time you return is because you realise you’re forgetting again, though it is one hundred years later. you walk down the same path because it is familiar, expecting to see someone, or something.
you see both. a man, and four headstones. you don’t recognise him, but it must have been the person you’ve sought, for you only had the faintest idea that there should’ve been somebody here. so, it must be him.
you explain to the stranger you feel as though you should recognise him, but you don’t. you also tell him his eyes are like the sunlight in the sky.
to that, he responds that you’ve told him that before. and you have. many, many times and many, many years ago.
jing yuan knows you can’t stay here, but it has been such a long time since he’s seen your face. so, he lets you examine the headstones as you did centuries ago.
he wasn’t there that day. the sky had darkened on the days you first returned, and though jing yuan had an inkling of an idea it had something to do with you, he had been bested by his own mind at the thought that you were gone, and had thus disappeared to grieve by himself.
truly, today, he came to grieve once the sky darkened again. seeing you here was not what he expected.
you ask him questions that visit. about the people beneath the soil—he responds that there aren’t any bodies buried here. baiheng’s body withered, dan feng never truly died, and neither did jingliu or yingxing.
“they all float aimlessly,” he tells you. “baiheng is gone. dan feng has a new identity, and what existed before is lost. jingliu and yingxing’s minds are scattered to the clouds. i cannot say what they will do if you cross paths, or whether they will remember you.”
you ask if you can meet them someday, as perhaps maybe one of them can jog your memory. jing yuan promises it is a possibility, but it is nearing impossible. fate will draw your paths together, he deduces. one day.
so, after a while, he tells you to return to the skies. it hurts, because he wants you to stay. he wants to tell you everything you did together. why you would trek this path, and only this path, and who the headstones were once. but he can’t, and so you return once more.
it is an endless cycle of you returning once you’ve realised you’ve forgotten the man who waits for you at the end of that path. an all too familiar path that seems new, but somewhere, you know you’ve walked along it before. sometimes it is only fifty years, sometimes it is two hundred, but jing yuan ensured that he is always there to greet you.
he tells yanqing of you one day. that’s only because he knows he won’t be around forever. he will be mara-stricken, or perhaps he will be killed in battle, but whatever it is, he tells yanqing, as his retainer and potential successor, to take over this position, and to pass it onto his successor, and then generations will pass.
but, for the moment, each time you return, jing yuan remains. and jing yuan promises you, though he knows you will forget, that when he does inevitably perish, he will find a way to join you in the skies.
dan heng asked him once after learning of you if it is difficult to love someone who you cannot be with.
jing yuan replied it’s easy. and it is easy, because every time the sky shifts from night to day, and the sun rises, and the clouds pass, he knows you’re up there, and you’re safe.
tldr: batty old general jing yuan talks to the clouds sometimes.

Random Character Role Swap
So for the absolute funsies of it, I found a Hazbin Hotel random character generator and spun it to see who would get swapped with who. I chose to just focus on the denizens of Hell for this (yes, I am still including Vaggie) and Lucifer and Lillith will stay the same as well. Personalities and most friendships/ships are staying the same, but roles and powers have been changed. Here are the results:
Vox - Angel
Velvette - Charlie
Valentino - Carmilla
Alastor - Mimzy
Husk - Zestial
Niffty - Razzle & Dazzle
Cherri Bomb - Rosie
Sir Pentious - Vaggie
Notes under cut! I am very curious to hear people's ideas and thoughts on these swaps! Also here's the wheel if anyone wants to play!
Vox - He is a famous porn star under contract with Carmilla and the first resident of the Hazbin Hotel. He is formerly a friend of Alastor's, but after a falling out, they are enemies. Because of this, he is distrustful of Mimzy as the host of the hotel, as she and Alastor are close. He is in an abusive relationship with Valentino, believing the Overlord truly loves him.
Angel Dust - He a member of ACC and is the Overlord of Media. He is a famous actor, starring in many films and shows. He has a (unknowingly reciprocated) crush on fellow Overlord, Husk. He was formerly in a relationship with Valentino.
Velvette - The owner of the Hazbin Hotel. A fairly new arrival to Hell, she wants to make a name for herself, seeking to figure out if there is a way out of this literal Hell hole.
Charlie - She is a member of ACC and the Princess of Hell. While not an Overlord herself, she runs the fashion and social media side of the Entertainment District. Vaggie is her girlfriend.
Valentino - He is the Overlord of all weapons manufacturing. He starts and frequently takes part in turf wars, supplying weapons to both sides of the conflict for profit. He is in an abusive relationship with Vox and was formerly in a relationship with fellow Overlord Angel Dust.
Carmilla - She is a member of ACC and the Overlord of the sex industry. She rules her industry with a firm but gentle grip and has been voted "Hell's Hottest MILF" 60 years running. She is friends with Zestial. She is aware of Vox's relationship with Valentino and disapproves, but maintains her distance from her contracts' personal affairs. She hopes the hotel will get him to leave Valentino.
Alastor - He owns a jazz club where he is the lead performer. He is friends with Mimzy and Rosie. He is formerly friends with Vox, but after a falling out, they are enemies. This former friendship is what prompts him to follow Mimzy to the hotel, taking up a position as head of recreation.
Mimzy - She is the infamous Radio Demon and the sponsor of the Hazbin Hotel. She is friends with Alastor from when they were alive.
Husk - He is the oldest of the Overlords. He has a (unbeknownst to him) reciprocated crush on fellow Overlord Angel Dust.
Zestial - He is a former Overlord now under contract to Mimzy. He is the bartender of the Hazbin Hotel. He is friends with Carmilla.
Niffty - She is Charlie's protector and helper, assigned by Lucifer himself to watch over his daughter. She is Charlie's head seamstress.
Razzle & Dazzle - They are the hotel's cleaning crew and pest control.
Cherri Bomb - She is the Overlord of the stuck-in-the-80s Cannibal Town and is close friends with Angel Dust.
Rosie - She is a prim and proper demolitions expert from the Victorian era. She is friends with Alastor.
Sir Pentious - He is the manager of the Hazbin Hotel. He has a crush on the Overlord of Cannibal Town, Cherri Bomb. His beloved Egg Bois serve as the hotel's bellhops (I just couldn't bring myself to separate them plus they'd make such cute bellhops!).
Vaggie - She is a fallen angel and former Exorcist turned one of Hell's greatest inventors. She is Charlie's girlfriend.

Pretty sure I missed something, if I did lemme know!
Should I make a part 2?
Tumblr media
You knew this was a bad idea. You knew this wasn't going to end well. But you were too far in to stop now. You'd been traveling with the infamous Mandalorian for months, looking for jobs and trying to keep the little green monster safe. It's been rough for the three of you, especially since many of the available jobs would compromise the three of you and put Grogu in inescapable harm. "There are more jobs out there, safer jobs." Din would say. But none of them would pay half as much as those he deemed "too risky." Not only that, they were scarce throughout the Galaxy. Every planet you landed on only had a few jobs Din was willing to take.
It was funny to you. Before Grogu came along, the last thing on his mind when taking a job was whether it was too dangerous. You'd often have to scold him for caring so little about his own safety, claiming he had no sense of self-preservation. Grogu changed that. Grogu was his wake-up call. Now he cares more about the safety of all three of you than how many credits the job offered. You were struggling to buy provisions and keep the Razor Crest in good shape. Peli was a big help, giving you a discounted price on repairs, but it still wasn't enough sometimes. Sometimes you had to scrape the bottom of the barrel just to have enough rations to make it to the next job. Despite wanting to stay optimistic, you knew you couldn't keep this up, it wasn't practical. You had a few conversations with Din about your concerns, but he kept reassuring you that it was fine. "Yours and Grogu's safety is what matters the most. We'll find other jobs, but I can't let anything happen to either of you." But that wasn't enough to make your worries dissipate. You still didn't have enough credits to buy the supplies you desperately needed.
That's what brought you here. You told Din that you were going into the next town over to try to find cheaper supplies for your travels while he took the next job. You hated having to lie to him, but it was getting harder to get by. The last time you visited Peli, you bargained asked for a favor. You asked her to send one of the droid-piloted ships in her possession to the next planet you were headed to, in exchange for a portion of the credits you'd get. You then had it take you to a different planet in the solar system, one you knew you could find one of the jobs Din refused to take. So here you were, waiting in an isolated corner of one of the grime-filled, crowded bars that bounty hunters frequented. You were looking for the zabrak that had offered Din the job a few days prior. He'd said that it was about killing a mercenary that had double crossed him a few months back. They weren't exactly well-known, but they'd made enough of a name for themselves in the underground for other hunters to stay away. Din said he could've taken care of it, but the only thing that stopped his was the very thing you were tired of hearing about. You knew you could handle it. Din had trained you well enough to take a job like this yourself, but he never really gave you the chance to prove it. You didn't need to. He would always be there to make sure you didn't. But now you had to.
A chirping noise coming from your belt pulled you out of your thoughts. Pulling out your holoprojector, you started to feel uneasy. You'd been gone for hours, he definitely noticed by now. As reluctant as you were, you knew that if you didn't respond, he would be absolutely mad with worry. Despite trying to get the job done as secretively as possible, you knew that worrying him would make it harder for him to understand why you decided to ignore his wishes for you to stay safe and stay near him. You knew you had to answer. The moment the hologram took the form of his helmet, the pressure in your stomach became harder to ignore. "Where are you?" His deep, modulated voice asked. You debated continuing the lie you previously used to leave his side, but the way he tilted his head towards you served as a warning against it. "I came looking for another job," you replied bluntly, "We need more than a few credits to get by this time." A deep exhale sounded through the hologram, he was upset. "You weren't in the next town over, I looked for you in every shit hole bar I could find. Where are you?" he asked more sternly He knew you'd gone farther than that, there was no doubt in his mind. That didn't deter you from accomplishing your original purpose here. You needed the supplies. That was something even he couldn't deny anymore. "Looking for another job," you repeated, knowing he wasn't going to stop asking, "I'll go back when I'm done, I just need you to be patient."
"Cyar'ika, tell me where you are. I'll pick you up and we can find a job together," Din tried, his voice easing up a bit as he spoke. Your stomach churned more, preparing another avoidant response. "Ah, there you are!" A very distinct familiar voice called over the noise of the crowd of drunkards, "You changed your mind then? You'll take the job?" Approaching your secluded corner of the bar, the zabrak you were looking for announced his presence out enough to be heard by your concerned lover. You felt your heart drop to your knees, knowing damn well Din would recognize the shrill, raspy voice of the man that had previously offered him the job. You turned your attention back to the holoprojector in your hand, attempting to end the projection before he'd fully realize where you were. But you weren't fast enough, as a deep hum resounded from his image followed by a sentence that would upturn your anxiety.
"So that's where you are."
*********************************************
A/N: Heyo! I know it's been almost a year since I posted the preview, sorry for the delay. Also, I meant to make this longer, but I figured if anyone wants to read more I can make a part 2. Love you guys, stay safe, stay proud, stay strong! 💖
Also, if my irl friends find this, not you fucking didn't 🫵😠

The first time that it happened, it was when he was frantically called to return to hq from his mission in France when he learned that dazai have finally left.
Figure that dazai would somehow manage to be troublesome even without being near him, it led him to have to search through the toxic waste that dazai called a home after defeating the numerous trap and having to pass through the bottles of beer and whisky and the cans of canned crab.
It was in an unassuming place in the shipping container that chuuya found a bunch of flowers : Aloe ( grief), butterfly weed ( let me go), Sweet pea ( goodbye, thank you for a lovely time), purple hyacinth (please forgive me, sorrow) , dark crimson rose ( mourning) and Pink carnation ( i'll never forget you) with a single sunflower seed.
And chuuya was loyal he swore his loyalty to the port mafia and It's members, it was his home and family and he intend to follow this vow till his death but chuuya was one of the few that could claim to know dazai and one things is sure bringing dazai back to the mafia against his wish will only end in the mutually assured destruction of him and the mafia, at least that what he told the boss when he asked him what he found.
He didn't tell anyone not even the boss, hirotsu-san and ane-san that his others reasoning was that he knew that bringing him back will be a betrayal to his partner and that he understand the message, while he make his search the mimic conflict stood out for him and while he mourned all their loss and deeply regreted the fact that he couldn't be here, his name lingered on the name of oda sakunosuke.
Dazai couldn't shut up about him and he would never admit him even under the threat of torture but a part of him have feel jealous of his closeness to dazai.
He and dazai others buddy we're gone and while he can't say that he fully understood all that he's thinking and he was really glad for that, those flower let him know that dazai was alive and let him have an idea of why he was gone, he could only hope that he would find what he search for no matter what it was but if dazai won't go after the mafia in retaliation, chuuya would do nothing.
So he went to do an exchange of favors with prof glasses to cover dazai trace, he saw Verlaine and ane-san more often while he wasn't with hirotsu-san or the boss and Elise, he took over akutagawa training, went training with the black lizards, drink with kajii, tachihara and hirotsu, go on mission, proved his loyalty to the mafia and drunk the bottle of petrus that he got from dazai in celebration of his departure and he said nothing about all the flower that he received in the three year that he didn't see that bandage wasting device.
He never told dazai what he learned with kouyou but he somehow learned that he know the language of flower, it's why in all those random place he found an Hydrangea ( gratitude for being understood) in his desk a few days after that he found the bunch of flower, then he found many more flower, in his apartment, in the port mafia lobby, even in his mission or when he went shopping or his vacation.
Yarrow (Everlasting love) , Zinnia ( lasting affection), white rose (a fresh start), blue Salvia (I think of you) as well as red Salvia (Forever mine), Heliotrope ( devotion), Fern ( fascination , secret bond of love) , gardenia (you're lovely),white camellia ( you're adorable), Daffodil ( You’re the only one, The sun shines when I’m with you), red carnation (my heart ache for you), Forget-Me-Not ( do not forget me) , Gloxinia ( love at first sight) and primrose ( can't live without you) we're amongst the flowers that he received, it went to the point that they're was a rumors that he have an admirator secret.
It was even worse on his birthdays when he would never fail to receive flowers and Anonymous gift with a card and a prank that both infuriated him and brought a smile to his face.
And it didn't even stop when he saw him again not after their reunion the first flower that he received when he came back home after having seen dazai in the dungeon was a red camellia ( love, passion and desire) " you set my heart on fire), then after their mission he received a pink camellia ( heartfelt longing for someone)" longing for you" and white roses ( heavenly, i'm worthy of you) " i'm thinking of you".
And this day on june 19th the day dazai was born , he decided that this time he will be the one to surprise him , it was easy to send an anonymous tip and a day that dazai was away on a mission with his birthday, it was also was easy to send a subordunate to have the agency go on a mission to suribashi city where the subordinate dispersed a bunch of peach blossom after all he remember that when he was drunk and he asked dazai what was his favorite flower, it was this flower who mean i am your captive and your charm are unequalled that was his answer. And send others subordonate to brink dazai to an izakaya in funabashi where they put homemade amanattō,pan, natto, dango, soba, Tsukemono, tempura ,sashimi, kasutera, unagi , miso soup, tofu as well as a fruit salad with banana .
He then had others subordonate bring him to bar lupin where he paid the owner to store a curry that he bought in Osaka and to give dazai a signed manuscript of the first edition of the complete guide to suicide with never seen before annotations and another manuscript of the draft of Oda sakunosuke book that he found in an antique shop thanks to a strange calico cat as well as have him drink whisky on ice with prof glasses.
Then he have made this wild goose chase one by one with the member of the agency and even send the akutagawa siblings and hirotsu it was then easy to have him eat chazuke with his mentee but also have him enjoy many others food like Nikujaga, sukiyaki, yakitori, taiyaki, seafood hot pot and Tamago Kake Gohan.
Then he went to buy a new console and game that dazai couldn't stop talking about, as well as an expensive bottle of alcohol and booked a restaurant to a seafood restaurant renowned for his crab dishes, flower in hand he saw a smiling dazai that just left his birthday party at the agency.
But of all things what make dazai eyes sparkles was when he finally agree to wear the damned maid dress, dazai while putting a sunflower in his hair had a bright and real smile on his face that made his heart skip a beat let him know how much he apprecied his birthday and it made him happy that he can make dazai enjoy a day that he loathes so much.

The Kinda Unhinged Ratiorine Fic I Want to Read
In an (admittedly very contrived) AU situation, Dr. Ratio finds out he's about to be cut out of his (mostly estranged) family's inheritance forever because of his complete lack of interest in continuing the family line. Which, all factors considered, does make perfectly logical sense. Investment of capital should go to the branch of the lineage most likely to benefit from it, and Cousin Tiberius has five sons and daughters already. Let the house and the trust fund go to them.
But the library.
There's absolutely no way Veritas could bear to be permanently parted from the staggering assemblage of paper volumes under his collected family's auspices. Not only would being separated from tomes so full of memories be heart-wrenching, but think of the devastating blow to his research! There are records in those archives that no other mortal eyes have ever gazed upon!
So there's only one solution for it: He needs to pass on his family name, immediately.
(Andddd the rest is under a read more because what is brevity?)
Problem 1: Veritas Ratio is very gay.
Problem 2: Statistically, single men have the lowest chance of being selected for adoption placement, and this Child Welfare Agent is looking at his alabaster head very, very strangely.
Think, Ratio, think. What is the most efficient way to solve such a tedious quandary?
The obvious first step is to increase his likelihood of being selected by the adoption agency, and the quickest way to do that is... Eureka! How elegant a design! He just needs to enter into a (temporary) committed and stable partnership to demonstrate a degree of domestic dedication and home-building prowess!
Problem 3: ...Where in the universe is he going to find a stable and committed man willing to marry him?
Ratio does not exactly possess the world's most endearing personality. He might... never have had any form of romantic relationship lasting past a one-night stand even, because it turns out most people don't like being scored a 2/10 on their technique during intercourse.
So he's probably not going to find a stable and committed man.
But... He might at least find someone willing--for the right price.
Enter Aventurine (stage left). He's as expensive as they come, the greatest reward saved for the highest bidder, but despite his festering ambitions, he's still trapped as nothing more than a high-class escort, owned by a company the IPC has on the books as selling everything but what they actually trade in: Avgin slaves.
Sigonians... The reputation--and sleazy men's curiosity--precedes him, and though he only has to get on his knees for the truly bold nowadays, he hasn't yet been able to make the ultimate gamble, pull the last string needed to finally gain his freedom: the freedom to live his life as he pleases--and to enact every ounce of vengeance he's been storing for decades like cards up his sleeves.
Until now.
Until an absolute madman shows up at the underground headquarters waving around an offer that no average person would possibly make: He wants to buy Aventurine and wed him.
(Because marrying a Sigonian thrall is a safe and sane thing that safe and sane people do.)
The offer is far too good to be trusted: A real marriage certificate but a perfectly fake marriage, a no-fault divorce once an adoption is finalized, and a guaranteed sponsor for his citizenship documents. A year or two of fake homemaking, this Veritas Ratio claims, and then Aventurine can walk away a completely free man, no strings--no chains--attached.
Well, Aventurine of the Myriad Stratagems has always held one skill dearer to his heart than any other: a crystal clear knowledge of when to fold--and when to go all in.
(...Problem 4: Amber Lord help him, Aventurine's new husband is the most irritating man in the entire universe.)
Alas, if only that was their biggest problem. Somewhere between learning to navigate the citizenship process, the adoption process, a truly unacceptable level of systemic racism, and also, increasingly, each other, Ratio and Aventurine discover that the circumstances of their lives might be far more entangled than they ever could have imagined from the beginning, and the same shadowy parties that profited off Aventurine's existence might have a vested interest in parting Ratio from valuable research secrets--permanently.
While struggling to maintain a charming and loving facade and struggling not to kill each other behind the scenes, Aventurine and Ratio also end up having to out-roll and out-plan a particularly dangerous enemy; something they can really only do together.
Or, tl;dr: Dr. Ratio chooses the most efficient but most unhinged method of finding a husband that intelligence could possibly contrive, only to determine that marrying a guy whose track record for unexplained deaths matches his track record for card counting really is the encyclopedic opposite of "committed and stable." Ridiculously enough, the trouble they get into is almost entirely Ratio's fault, the only one who is remotely convincing in front of the Child Welfare Agency is Aventurine, and sometimes it turns out the guy you married for the library ends up being the guy you married for life.
