Fantastic kagura suzu (instrument used in kagura dance) and noh fan obi, with beautiful embroidery work and gold thread couching.
The bell and fan are probably a nod to the auspicious noh dance Sanbasô praying for bountiful harvests. Here are powerful modern performances:

Kasshiki
"The mask shows a youth of between 12 and 17 years of age, very sweet with a feminine attraction seen in the bangs and curl of the lips and dimples in the cheeks. The eyes are typical of young men's masks with slightly rounded pupils and the eyebrows rise up pertly. Two styles of bangs, either straight across the forehead (Ōkasshiki such as the Muromachi period example in the Hōshō collection designated an Important Cultural Property), or flaring out like a ginko leaf (Ichō kasshiki, such as the Muromachi period mask owned by the Kanze school), characterize two styles of Kasshiki mask. The latter are further classified by size. Today the three types are known as "large," "medium," and "small," which is intended to suggest gradations of age of the role as well. Three plays use Kasshiki masks: Jinen Koji, Togan Koji, and Kagetsu. In all three the main actor, as lay priest or temple boy, performs a dance while beating a drum tied to his waist."

Art tumblr, I request your assistance
This is driving me crazy. I thought for sure there was an old Japanese drawing movement or technique where the artist draws line art of a face and the rest of the painting / drawing is just broad strokes. This was done to emphasize people's facial expressions. Backgrounds were more or less disregarded
The only similar artwork I can find is Edo period ink washes. Close but no cigar
I distinctly remember finding out about this when I fell down a Wikipedia rabbit hole years ago. I believe this movement (?) was associated with Noh theater or influenced manga in some way

Japan 日本🇯🇵 Spirited Away (Japanese: 千と千尋の神隠し)
Tumblr media
written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, animated by Studio Ghibli
Tumblr media
🏯There have been a lot of movies made in Japan with a Western witch. However the Japanese spirit-characters are rich, multi-faceted entities replete with cultural memories and histories. It is said that some eight million deities reside in Japan. Some of these, not necessarily in their traditional Japanese forms, appear in the film “Spirited Away” to take a bath or to work at the bathhouse.
Tumblr media
💎The most interesting among them is the memorable Yubaba, the witch who owns it. Yubaba lives on the top floor of the bathhouse - higher than anyone else, a command center where Yubaba controls her operation and gives orders to her employees. She is also pampering her gigantic spoiled baby-boy. This character may have some western influences but it has clearly a history in Japanese folklore of Mountain Witches- Yamauba. 山姥
Tumblr media
Yamauba can live alone in huts by the road, occasionally offering shelter, food, and a place to sleep for the night to weary travelers. Late at night when their guests are fast asleep, they transform into their true shape – an ugly, old, demonic witch –and try to catch and eat their guests, often using powerful magic.👹
Tumblr media
Yamauba is almost always endowed with supernatural powers. In the Medieval Noh text entitled Yamamba, the protagonist of Yamauba, seen in the movie too.
Tumblr media
🍽Cannibalism, a major representative image of the Yamauba, is the demonic side of their dual nature. The witch in “Hansel and Gretel,” a fairytale of German origin, is perhaps a Western counterpart. When the positive side is on focus she is helping, giving good fortune and fertility.🌸
Tumblr media
Sometimes Yamauba are created when young women accused of crimes or wicked deeds flee into the wilderness and live out their lives in exile, transforming gradually over many years as they grow older. Yamauba is the fairy of the mountains, which have been under her care since the world began. 🗻
Tumblr media
The character appears in countless tales, Noh plays 能 and many films.

I was first introduced to Japanese theater when I was in high school. Since then, I have become a huge fan. The three main styles of Japanese theater I will be posting about are Noh, Bunraku, and Kabuki. I hope we can share the joy and fun of discussing the history and art of these theatrical forms.

After living in New York for nearly a decade, I decided that 2022 was the perfect time to finally take advantage of the city’s live theater scene. Here are a few of the plays and musicals that I saw.
I plan to continue the trend in 2023!
