Some Chinese fashion styles
Disclaimer: The following styles and their definitions were observed by me and are not authoritative. I am only familiar with Hanfu and if I made mistakes and picked the wrong photo examples or fraud shops, please let me know. Also, this post focused on women's fashion because 1. I am not into men's fashion so I don't know much about them. 2. The algorithm also knew that so I don't really see them.
汉服/Hànfú
传统服饰/Chuántǒng fúshì (传服/chuán fú)
清汉女/Qīng hàn nǚ
旗装/Qí zhuāng
旗袍/Qípáo
新国风/Xīn guó fēng、新中式/Xīn zhōngshì 汉元/hàn yuánsù 茶艺服/Cháyì fú or 茶服/chá fú 唐装/Tángzhuāng 中山装/Zhōngshānzhuāng.
汉服/Hànfú
The ethnic clothing of Han Chinese (not the Han Dynasty).
There was a prohibition of Han clothing and hair styles in Qing dynasty, i.e. the 剃发易服/Tìfā yìfú qu Queue Ordinance, so modern hanfu is an on-going revivalist moment.
Modern hanfu are based on archeological evidences with minor twists to suit modern like, such as the type of fabric used and cut.
As a result, there are many types of garments and sub-styles. The figure above shows some examples.
While which style should be included and promoted is a constant debate, but in general, the cutout line is the Qing dynasty (however small accessories such as purses are alright).
传统服饰/Chuántǒng fúshì (传服/chuán fú)
No example because I am not sure who identified with this label.
The Chinese traditional clothing.
This either referred to historical clothing restorers (regardless of ethnicity) or people who promoted that the traditional clothing of Han people should be in the late Ming dynasty style, since "people should get up at where they had fallen".
They might be agreeable with the hanfu movement or not.
清汉女/Qīng hàn nǚ
The clothing of women of Han Chinese in the Qing dynasty.
Since the Queue Ordinance wasn't that strictly enforced on Han women, the Han women clothing in the Qing dynasty had quickly absorbed Manchurian's elements while retaining the characteristic two-piece silhouette. (Manchurian women wore a one-piece robe.)
I believed it appeared around 2019 when the styles of hanfu had moved to fully embroidered surface to a more tone down brocade or weaved patterns.
旗装/Qí zhuāng
The ethnic clothing of Man people (Manchurian).
The women's clothing are generally in round collar opened on the left (youren) with straight sleeves.
The most basic item is a 衬衣/chènyī, which doesn't have vents.
However, the most common item I have seen on the street is a 氅衣/chǎng yī (probably rented), which should be worn on top of 衬衣, since they have side vents.
They usually have no standing-up collar but in some cases a fake collar could be worn.
On top of changyi they could wear a 马褂/mǎguà、坎肩/kǎnjiān、褂裥/guà jiǎn.
旗袍/Qípáo
The Chinese clothing of women originated from the Minguo era, known in English as qipao or cheongsam.
The male equivalent is 长衫/chángshān.
Currently in style is the retro-cut, while uses the traditional flat cut (no shoulder seam) instead of the more body-hugging modern draping style.
There are also many variations and cuts, but the overall silhouette is similar.
新国风/Xīn guó fēng、新中式/xīn zhōngshì
Innovative clothing that was inspired by Chinese traditional aesthetic.
It is an umbrella term.
汉元素/hàn yuánsù refers to clothing inspired by hanfu specifically, while xinguofeng could be inspired by qipao and other ethnic clothing. In addition, hanyuansu is a term more familair to hanfu-ers, so the target audience is slightly different between hanyuansu and xinguofeng.
茶艺服/Cháyì fú or 茶服/chá fú,i.e tea dress, which aimed to convey a zen and rustic aesthetic could also be considered a sub-style. They are often worn by retirees, artists or workers in tea shops, calligraphy shops, Chinese spas, Chinese traditional medicine clinics etc.
The older "Chinese style" generally refers to 唐装/Tángzhuāng and 中山装/Zhōngshānzhuāng.
Tangzhuang (Tang Suit) was a men suit characterized with a mandarin collar with a row of 盘扣/pán kòu frogs in the middle. There are two pockets at the bottom front of the suit. It was a well-known looked worldwide due to the 2001 APEC summit. However, other clothes resembled a 马褂/mǎguà could also be called a tangzhuang.
Zhongshanzhuang was designed and named after Sun Yat-sen but was often known in English as the Mao Suit. Mao Suit was characterised with a 关门领/Guānmén lǐng(“closed-door collar", but also known as Mao collar in English) with a row of round buttons. There are four pockets at the front of the suit.
中华lolita/Zhōnghuá lolita
A sub-style of the lolita fashion inspired by cheongsam/qipao, hanfu or other Chinese artistic elements.
The same item could appeared in different styles, but with different cut and accessories. The following examples showed a mamianqun used in different styles.

thinkin' about some MG Graphic Novel ideas I have,, and about these two girlies that become unlikely friends in one of the story ideas I have :) (not a historical graphic novel, but more fantasy/historical inspired as it takes place in a fantasy/magical world that is loosely based on ours but y'know, has literal magic)
Probably upper MG/Young YA? If I had to choose an age group that this story was aimed for :)
Basically the premise is: The blonde girl (name pending) travels to a magical Eastern/Chinese-inspired country with her rich (Evil) father, and befriends the daughter (also name pending lol) of said country's emperor. Shenanigans ensue :) Also... young love??
#not tolkien#my art#I swear i won't spam y'all with non tolkien stuff all the time XD#I'm just most active on this blog when it comes to art#tolkien art for the most part but still#anyway! I've been into the idea of creating a MG Graphic Novel lately :>#hanfu#chinese hanfu#fantasy hanfu#18th century#graphic novel#indie comic#also just in case anyone is wondering: No it's Not a 'white savior' story lmao#if anything blond girl is more of a constant damsel in distress lmaooo#she just happens to be white and the story mainly takes place in an eastern/chinese inspired country

Hanfu in Components: Hanfu Anatomy, Tops (pt 3.1)
navigation: hanfu in components 1 2 3.1 3.2 4 5 ...
Now that you know about the names of different garments, what about the parts of each garment? There are so many confusing terms!!! I gotchu :>
When looking at hanfu and parts of hanfu, it can help to see how the garment is constructed. To do that, we have to look at the pattern of the garment. Sewing patterns are the templates that tell sewists how to cut their fabric into the shapes that are needed to make their clothes. Hanfu sewing patterns are fairly standard. They look roughly like this.

(blue = shoulder fold line // red = center front // green = center back)
To help you understand how this all comes together, when defining different parts of hanfu anatomy, I'll show it on the sketch above, and also on photos of people wearing hanfu, highlighted in green.
身/SHEN1/BODY

This refers to the body of the garment—the part that would cover your torso. Typically there are two pieces of cloth making up the body: one on the left and one on the right.
Once again, one of hanfu’s main defining characteristics is that traditionally, THE SAME PIECE OF FABRIC MAKES UP THE FRONT AND THE BACK. There is no shoulder seam separating the front and back of the garment.
袖/XIU4/SLEEVE

袖 means sleeve (in both technical and colloquial terms). There are many shapes that the sleeve can take: they can be narrow like normal clothing or they can be big and dramatic like the kind you see in cdramas. Like the body, there is no seam separating the front and back of the sleeve—the sleeve piece is draped over the arm and sewn together at the bottom. Another important characteristic is that the sleeves are joined to the body at the bicep or elbow area, NOT at the shoulder. (Short or half-sleeve tops might not have a separate sleeve piece.)
領/领/LING3/COLLAR

領 means collar (in both technical and colloquial terms). This can refer to two things: one, the general shape of the neck area (round, square, standing, cross etc.) and the actual strip of fabric that is attached at the neck to form the collar.
襟/JIN1/LAPEL

This can be translated as collar or lapel; I choose to say lapel to distinguish it from 領. This refers to the area where an open-front top would open. It’ll look different based on the collar type—generally a 對襟/对襟/dui4 jin1/parallel collar top’s jin coincides with the front centerline.

With a 交領/交领/jiao1 ling3/cross-collar top, however, it would coincide with the outer edge of the collar. (Will have a more detailed post about this later.)
下擺/下摆/XIA4 BAI3/HEMLINE

Refers to the bottom hem of the garment. 下 means down/bottom. Note that 擺 can refer to different things in different contexts. If you see someone talk about the 下擺 of a top, they’re talking about this bit.
The following terms only apply to a subsection of hanfu tops and may have fewer images as a result.
衽/REN4/LAPEL EXTENSION

This one is a little harder to translate. Applies to non-parallel lapel tops like cross collar, diagonal-lapel standing collar, and overlapping round collar garments. It’s an extension of the BODY piece on the front, sewn to the vertical center front seam, that overlaps over the other side. (Will have a more detailed post about this later.)
衩/CHA4/VENT
Also called vents or slits—an optional open slit, usually made on each side of a longer shirt or robe, to allow for ease of movement. Might be combined with the word 開/开/kai1/open to form the phrase 開衩/开衩/kai1 cha4/open slit. Mostly applies to longer robes or tops, where the length reaches the knee, so that you don’t have issues with walking.
襴/LAN2/WAIST EXTENSION

Also a little harder to translate. This only applies to 襦/ru2/Ru tops and 襴衫/襕衫/lan2 shan1/Lanshan robes, plus some varieties that were derived off of those two. The 襴/襕/lan2 is an extra rectangle of fabric appended to the bottom of a shirt/top to extend its length. It can be made of a contrasting fabric or the same fabric, and often has pleats on the sides to allow for movement. (Will have a more detailed post about this later.)
緣/缘/YUAN2/TRIM
Refers to the trim or decorative contrasting bits on a piece of clothing. Specific location goes in front of the character. For example, 袖缘 means sleeve trim, aka the cuff. Some specific trims might have their own special names but that’s for another post.
Later post about skirts/pants to come soon!

Could I request Jiyan's lover running up to him and snuggling him because they miss his presence?
Home Is in Your Arms
Summary: After days apart, you reunite with Jiyan, as he returns from his mission. Overwhelmed with longing, you rush into his arms, finding solace in his quiet, steadfast presence. Jiyan, always stoic and composed, allows himself to be vulnerable with you, sharing a tender moment that reminds you both of the unbreakable bond you share amidst the chaos of war.

Warnings: Brief mentions of war and violence (non-descriptive), Light angst due to separation.

[cr: guaisanmu on Twitter/X]
The sun was just beginning to dip behind the mountains, casting Jinzhou in hues of amber and rose. The camp was unusually quiet; most of the Midnight Rangers had returned from their patrols and, by now, had settled into their tents for the evening. Only one figure remained at the edge of the camp, standing against the breeze as though he were part of the landscape itself. Jiyan’s silhouette was framed by the setting sun, his long teal hair catching the dying light as it shifted in the breeze.
You stood back, watching him. It felt as if he’d been gone forever, although it had only been a few days. Each moment without him was like an ache, a silence that stretched too far. Jiyan had warned you before he left that his patrol might take longer, but no amount of preparation had eased the loneliness that crept in each night. Now, with him in sight, that emptiness dissolved, replaced by a warmth you could hardly contain.
Without thinking, you broke into a sprint, your feet barely making a sound as they skimmed over the grass. Jiyan’s back was to you, his gaze fixed somewhere far off, his attention consumed by unspoken thoughts. But the moment you wrapped your arms around him, he knew it was you. A barely perceptible sigh escaped him, his shoulders softening as your arms closed around his waist.
"Back already?" His voice was soft, even as he kept his gaze forward. But his hand found yours, warm and reassuring as he pulled your hands closer against his chest. You felt the steady beat of his heart beneath your palm, grounding you.
"I missed you," you whispered, your face pressed against his back. The fabric of his modified hanfu was rough beneath your cheek, but it held the faint scent of cedar and the earthy tones of the forest. "It feels like you've been gone for ages."
He shifted, slowly turning to face you. Those intense eyes of his softened as they met yours, and a hint of a smile—small, but genuine—played at his lips. It was the smile he saved for moments like these, for you alone.
"I’m here now," he said, reaching up to brush a stray strand of hair from your face. "I didn’t mean to worry you."
You couldn’t help but lean into his touch, craving the warmth of his palm against your cheek. "It’s impossible not to worry about you. Especially when you’re out there, fighting Tacet Discords alone." You paused, looking up into his eyes. "I just… need you to come back to me. Every time."
He let out a soft hum, nodding in that quiet way of his, the way that carried both promise and understanding. "I will." His hand lingered on your face, his thumb tracing gentle circles against your skin. "But remember, there’s something worth returning to."
The vulnerability in his gaze was rare, a crack in the stoic armor he wore around everyone else. And for a brief moment, you saw past the warrior and the general, to the man who sometimes questioned his path, who worried about the battles he couldn’t fight with strength alone.
You slipped your arms around him again, and this time, he didn’t hesitate. He drew you close, wrapping his arms around you with a gentle firmness that left no space between you. It was as though he, too, had missed the comfort of your embrace, had needed this closeness more than he could admit.
For a long time, the two of you stood there in silence. His fingers ran soothingly along your back, grounding you in his warmth, his presence. The world around you faded, the distant threat of Tacet Discords, the quiet of the camp, everything except the steady beat of his heart against yours.
“I’ll come back to you, every time,” he murmured, his voice barely above a whisper. "No matter how far I go."
You nodded, not needing any further words. In that embrace, you understood that, for tonight at least, he was home.

I'm seeing so much commentary on people reacting to the live action atla toning down Sokka's misogyny
and I'm over here like this is a total non-issue because in my own rewrite of the show I already did that exact thing, it makes complete sense to do it and they should do it because it's a weaker aspect of the original show
Sokka's early misogyny is utterly cartoonish in comparison to the set up of the rest of the SWT, it doesn't feel realistic for the only teenaged boy in a dying culture surrounded by adult women with a grandmother who left a more out and out misogynist society to act the way he does
how Sokka "resolves" his misogyny is equally cartoonish, I never liked how in The Warriors of Kyoshi literally episode 4 of the show makes a teen girl compromise her own culture with a female only fighting tradition teach a boy who is supremely rude and disrespectful to her and then still be attracted to him afterwards, it's more misogyny to fix misogyny and is very obviously men writing about how to fix misogyny especially as they have Aang make a joke about Sokka wearing a dress after going through how meaningful the fighting costume is and how a lot of Asian clothing with hanfu influences like atla borrows from would have men in what to western eyes would be dresses, Aang has already seen multiple male authority figures in robes, the joke makes no sense
I also wouldn't consider Sokka's misogyny genuinely resolved after this, consider how the show deals with his romantic relationships with both Yue and Suki and how both can be seen as extensions of how Kataang is treated in the show, rewards for the hero, especially with how Sokka interacts aggressively with Hahn instead of respecting Yue's wishes whatever her reasons for them, I think an argument can be made that Yue's death is a fridging for Sokka's storyline rather than or in combination with being a consequence of Aang's failure as an avatar or the culmination of her own storyline where she fulfills her duties as a leader to protect her own people
Beyond his romantic relationships, while Sokka drops a lot of his more misogynistic language with Katara, he doesn't support her when she faces off with the NWT leaders to learn waterbending, and he still leaves the caretaking and food preparation and grocery shopping to her which is more common than him going out to hunt or gather in order to provide for the group while he takes a leadership role like determining their travel schedule and routes, it is not an even division of labor and falls along traditional sex stereotypes
In addition to his typical duties to the group, Sokka also remains invested in the trappings of masculinity after ep4, he's concerned about what's manly and how he compares to Jet for example, there's no investigation or interrogation in his interest in meat and hunting and how they relate to masculinity and his misogyny, in the episode with Piando, his insecurity as a non-bender is resolved by giving him a new male mentor and a new martial skill, sword fighting, which is masculine in both western and Asian cultures rather than assuaging his self esteem issues in any less stereotypically masculine ways, I also think it was done so he could compare more favorably to Zuko, another male character, and even his interest in engineering and mechanics comes with a male mentor and is a traditionally masculine pursuit
the show's poor handling of misogyny also extends beyond Sokka, with the NWT, the show acts as if Pakku is the only reason the tribe is misogynistic and the only consequences to that misogyny is that women can't waterbend and there are arranged marriages, and that both the NWT and Pakku's misogyny is resolved by allowing only Katara to learn to waterbend which she doesn't even earn on her own merits, she gets the opportunity because Pakku likes her grandmother
none of this is realistic, misogyny is not because of one bad apple, Pakku doesn't make Yue's arranged marriage, Chief Arnook does, he picked Hahn for her, and the show acts as if Arnook has no authority to compel Pakku to teach Katara or any ability to persuade him in order to reduce his culpability in the NWT's misogyny as its leader to make him a more respectable character so it's not uncomfortable when Aang and Sokka follow his orders in the battle later on, but women not being able to bend and forced into arranged marriages is still status quo when the gaang leaves, Yue's just dead
I'm not even convinced the show runners understand what's wrong with arranged marriage, the issue is not Yue can't be with Sokka who she likes and at most has a slight crush on cuz she's only known him for like two days, it's that she's being treated as male property, a broodmare, and a vehicle to ensure Hahn receives the throne because her father has no male heir and picked some guy to succeed him instead, like it's not explicit in the show but that is the implication based on the historical reality of princesses in arranged marriages, and the show has her get out of it only through death idc that she ascends to being a spirit, it's still a teen girl that dies
There's also no discussion by the show of the Earth Kingdom's misogyny when it has the exact same shit going on, Toph is the only female earthbender in the show not including avatars, there might have been a female earthbender in the background when Katara broke them out of prison, but I'm not really counting that, the entire army and Dai Li are all made up of men, the EK might even be worse because the show doesn't demonstrate that women and girls even have the capacity to earthbend aside from Toph and avatars and Toph doesn't even learn from a human, she has to learn from animals, the show treats this as commentary on her disability but the show has no compelling reason why it can't also be commentary on her sex, Toph was also originally supposed to be a boy so this could have ended up so much worse there literally would have been no female earthbenders aside from avatars at all, I'm not counting Oma as she might just be a mythological figure not a real person that once lived
The Fire Nation kinda barely avoids the same issue, Azula is the only named female firebender aside from avatars in the show but she has two female sidekicks who despite being non-benders show martial skill and there are clearly female soldiers and guards in the FN military so there are much stronger implications of female firebenders existing and being completely allowed to train their abilities and that Azula isn't exceptional in that respect like Toph is, only for being a prodigy with blue fire
Azula was also originally supposed to have an arranged marriage in s3 and they dropped it in favor of showing that royal and noble girls could casually date in the FN which has wild implications for women's empowerment in the country more so than but especially in combination with the fact women can train and join the military (which is why I say the FN is not fascist it's literally the least misogynistic country aside from Kyoshi and by like a country mile so it's literally not misogynistic enough) not that the show does anything more than minor teen drama with it
again, the vast majority of this misogyny is completely unremarked upon by the show especially after s1 when they leave the NWT, it is clearly a fictional world made by men with no true understanding of misogyny just a vague awareness that misogyny is bad and what the really obvious and outdated examples of it are, this is a narrative inconsistency in the show to have the examples and commentary on misogyny be so cartoonish in the beginning and then disappear after s1
your options to resolve this inconsistency is to either go all in with more realistic misogyny and provide commentary on all of it but this takes effort and will be divisive, or take the easier route and ease off the cartoonish-ness of it and comment less on it to avoid drawing attention to all instances of misogyny in the show
obviously Netflix was gonna do the latter
(not me tho, I'm making it less cartoony and dealing with it in my rewrite)

Hi hanfu tumblr! I'm not sure who to ask about this, but is it appropriate to wear the hairpins (I think theyre called zan, and notably the velvet flower / ronghua type style) with non-hanfu outfits? Like, just regular outfits?
I think they're absolutely stunning, but I know, even if I had a hanfu that was like. frmo my dreams. i'd never end up wearing it

If you were a magic girl, what would your transformation be like? Also, would you rather fight against your darling Jade or fight with~
Either way, what bliss for him, really🫶
CERUUUUUUU YOUUUUUUUUUUU. YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU 🫵🫵🫵🫵🫵🫵🫵🫵 DON’T YOU DARE PRETEND I DON’T SEE YOU BEING DOWN BAD ABOUT CATER. BLISSFULLY IN LOVE. POT CALLING THE KETTLE BLACK!!!!!
I don’t have a magical girl transformation myself, and I’m ass at drawing one, but I would think it’d be very flowery, specifically full of periwinkles!
I would fight with Jade, hands down. I would not win against a fight with him I am a pure panic button masher (evident in any game I play really) while he is calculated, meticulous and precise. I fear having him as an enemy 💀 If he were real I would NOT wanna get on his bad side he would obliterate me EASILY
However >_> Li Xue IS a magical girl in canon >_>

I ramble more about it under the cut
Pretend I didn’t forget her hairpin in the doodles in the third photo
Okay!!! So Li Xue has been around for quite a while (a year? Or two?), going through MULTIPLE design changes, and only now am I more capable of drawing her the way I want to. Essentially, she’s part of my own PMMM x TWST concept back when I noticed the multiple similarities between their magic systems (and possibly plot ahem timeloop theory ahem).
So far I’ve changed a LOT about her that she’s pretty different from her previous designs, while keeping the staples:
1. periwinkle theming
2. sword as her magical girl weapon
3. Traditional chinese clothing and aesthetics (mainly hanfu)
And I’ve also doodled some interactions she would have with Jade in that third photo above! Non-canon to my concept, because in canon she’s hiding the fact that she has magic in the first place. But if she were to have revealed herself as a magical girl before book 3, I think Jade would be slightly intrigued, which gradually rises during the fight underwater when she makes use of her ice magic to give him an annoying time. Would definitely treat her like a lab specimen and poke and prod at her relentlessly just to find out about her abilities and weak spots. Her magic is different, how does it work? Can she only use just ice magic? Is it her equivalent of their world’s unique magic? So many questions awaiting their answers.
In book 4 is when they start to work together, albeit only a truce formed out of necessity. She still isn’t fond of the Octavinelle trio and their roundabout manipulative tactics, but what choice does she have when stuck with an equally conniving perpetrator? She gains more insight on the inner workings of Jade’s and Azul’s minds and machinations when working with them to form a plan. When it comes to combat styles, Li Xue is definitely close-combat focused, so Jade takes on a supporting role by covering her with long-range attacks. If these two practiced together more, they’d definitely be able to come up with a whole lot more coordinated attacks, too.
It’s 5am and I don’t know how to end it off uh. Yay!

A set of "Han-Yang zhezhong" [...] by -阿舍-. Han-Yang zhezhong is a fashion trend that refers to using western/European accessories when wearing hanfu. All the women in the figures were wearing Ming-style hanfu with various non-Chinese traditional elements such as shoes, handbags, belts etc.

sometimes i think about keeper of the lost cities (it is my special interest) and go “holy shit how is this a middle grade series”
so here is an incomplete list of things that happen in kotlc that would get a kotlc movie’s rating moved to R (read at your own risk).
kidnapping
torture
horse copulation
graphic violence
graphic birth
unspecified but apparently flavorful cursing
human experimentation
body horror
very detailed depictions of almost-deadly allergic reactions
non-consensual drugging. a lot of it. of CHILDREN
and here is a list of things that i think the US government would hate about kotlc
criticism of government and discussion of how one should handle being in a position of power (you should not enjoy being powerful)
elfin society has a eugenics problem and this is consistently criticized
queer coding isn’t even coding atp marella is GAY gay
and finally, criticisms i have of kotlc.
weird eurocentric beauty standards
tam and linh. great characters. CONSTANTLY fetishized bc they’re asian. sophie calls them k-pop idols, anime characters, etc. from what i can tell, though, they’re vietnamese. LET THEM BE VIETNAMESE WITHOUT COMPARING THEM TO EVERY EAST ASIAN STEREOTYPE
everyone is thin. LITERALLY EVERYONE. why is everyone thin and why does thin equal beautiful. shannon messenger explain your biases challenge
there are SO many poc in the books, but elf culture is shown as a monolith. show the cultural nuances that come from before humans and elves separated. i want to see the human influences in their clothing, hairstyles, accents, vernacular. have elves who have historically lived in china wearing something similar to hanfu. give tam and linh ao dai. give me a nigerian elf with fulani braids. give me culture through style and bodies and voices and music. i want to see it. it’s beautiful and it is NOT shown enough
dex needs more page time.
alden and della are NOT criticized enough. they are complicit. they are part of the problem in the lost cities. they are not all bad, but they are not all good either. CRITICIZE THEM, SHANNON.

May I order a red bean bun, please?
(Afab)
It being a cold night as you walk with your lady, just enjoying each other’s company and admiring the gardens. But it is such a cold night and you can think of a few ways to enjoy the lovely scenery and help keep each other warm.

Soft chuckles flow throughout the large expanse of the Zhào estate garden. Your lady and you intertwined, two lovers illuminated by moonlight.
Her cold lips press to your warm ones and in an odd way, it makes you heat up all the more. You move your hands below her hanfus first layer. Tracing warmth up her neck with soft hands. "You reapers, you can't get warm at all."
"Oh we can, dear. But we are coldblooded, literally, not figuratively." She chuckles in response and presses another simple but breathtaking kiss to your lips. Cold hands wrapping blankets around your body, while pushing you closer to her.
She might not be warm but her hanfu is, with your added temperature.
"O, what shall we do to warm you up, xin?" The question quirks the corner of your lips and your quick beating heart contrasts her slow, almost non, beating heart.
"I could think up a few ways," you hum in response and push yourself on top to be a bit closer. Instinctively she wraps her arms around you, the two of you landing on the blankets below the two of you with a thud. Dioxazine eyes meet yours reflected by the night.
She's more ethereal than the night itself is. Bedroom eyes and a hand moved to the small of your back while your chests press together and breathe alongside each other. "Well show me, hm? You have all of me," she says against your lips and kisses them swollen and sore.

I was making tiny clay cats earlier and had a great idea for an ask, but then I got busy and forgot
I think it was something about fashion with the mass effect species
Electronically sending you a fictional tiny clay cat statue
Thank for the tiny clay cat, I'll put it on the virtual table that I keep in this blog at all times, which is a real table that happened to have a unique eco-friendly design, from an eccentric manufacturer, and definitely not just two logs I lugged from the woods.
🕔
🌱🐈 🪟🏙
🪵🪵 🧺 🩲 🪤 🐁
I hope my virtual son 🧒 (common) ×1 doesn't knock it off with his virtual ball ⚽️ (common) ×1 because I won't financially recover from the purchase of the virtual gold 🪙 (rare) ×99 I'd need to glue the pieces of the broken clay cat back together in order to teach him about Kintsugi, the value of history and taking pride in the scars it leaves on ones body.
But yes, Mass Effect alien species fashion.
I mentioned before that the asari would definitely be into human fashion since we share a similar physical build.
They tend to mix up the centuries, however, wearing Edwardian era garments one day, and then full-on ancient Rome with draped tunics the next one.
To us, that seems silly because it's our history. These fashion designs are centuries old, and our first ever impressions on them were in textbooks or some other non-fashionable place. You wouldn't have a woollen toga at a strip mall where tweens naturally went with their overbearing parents to develop a sense of style.
But to the asari, all of these clothes are brand new! Just in! The latest fashion trends! From the perspective of their timeline, their society started integrating skinny jeans at the same time as robe à la française.
And the fact they live for 1000 years, the entirety of human recorded history is just two asari generations—would help them see our ancient fashion as more of "last Wednesday's"
Although many human cultures do keep their tradition clothes alive, like the hanfu being used in Chinese festives, or the Arab thawb still worn as in commonplace same as it was in 600 AD.... because what other garment is more suitable for desert climates?
Okay back to aliens, my fashion hyperfixation is showing
The asari are easy peasy, it's like two sister civilisations deciding to share their wardrobes and doubling the amount of clothes they retroactively have access to now.
You see many humans on the Citadel adapt to asari fashion, and as the game progresses, you notice asari fashion start getting influenced by predominantly human-fashion traits. Take Ryder's clothes in Andromeda for example.
The Alliance uniforms must seem ancient to the new humans with their cross-species influenced fashion trends, and I do mean ancient.
They probably view them (alongside our current modern hot-trendy fashion), like how me and you view the Victorian era fashion through a thick lens of rose-tinted glass. I wear corsets over flowy blouses, corsets, the thing that used to be considered underwear.
It's just very socially accessible now. Would someone someday wear a 2000's cheetah print thong over their military uniform in the alliance and call it fashion? Who's to say.
You see those modern two-piece suits with neon vibrant colours? The ones with precise cuts, invisible stiches, and all the pieces—down to the jacket buttons—are made from the same exact material and colour?
Someone is gonna dig that up in the year of Mass Effect and call it vintage and it's gonna piss me the fuck off, the trajectory of the earth will be altered from the massive rolls I'll be doing in my grave.
For the rest of the species, I don't see them adapting our garments due to anatomy incompatibility.
But fashion is the keyword here, because it is so much more than just clothes.
None of the asari have eyebrows, they don't have the genes for hair, therefore no eyebrows or anything.
Except, Liara, who has drawn-on (or perm tat) eyebrows.
Which is a VERY human feature, eyebrows might as well be the trademark of humanity. What do you do to an animal in animation to humanise it and make it seem intelligent?
You add eyebrows.
Liara, this rando asari scientist, for some reason, is elbow-deep into human makeup. Literally, no other asari has eyebrows or showed care for human makeup besides her.
We humans can't see our own "invisible" stripes, our faces are usually a blank canvas, which is why makeup is so fun, pretty, and whimsical. It's the same reason you'd add flowers to your hair or draw at the empty corner of the page.
Asari have their own seemingly natural face markings (unless those are drawn too) and putting makeup on top of them might seem distasteful or even tacky. Like drawing over someone's complete drawing.
But you know which species LOVES adding lines to their face? None other than space birbs themselves, the humble turians.
Humans like sunsets, birds like shiny things, and turians love glitter.
Of course, there are zero evidence of that ingame because they wanted the turians to have a metal, baddass, slightly scary aesthetic, and that's fair.
But if we're being realistic, it's just a matter of time before a turian decides to incorporate glitter into their clan face paint. It's a natural instinct for them to be the bird with the shinest, puffest, most colourful coat of feathers in the room.
Turians would love human makeup, wasn't it for the fact it's deadly toxic to them. Thanks, dextro. I mean, not like that ever stopped humans before. Remember when lipstick used to contain lead and mercury? Good time, good times.
But actually, now thinking about it, would those things be poisonous to them? Lead and mercury? I mean, they're already radioactive with a shit ton of copper in their bloodstream. Their body literally grows metal on their faces... and turian seminal fluid is poisonous to humans, meaning...
They might be able to use mineral based makeup! Which is so fucking deadly to humans, but probably fine for turians.
Although the human skin is spongey, the creamy make-up sticks to the top of it like icing on a cake. But it might not latch onto rough metal, aka turian plates.
It's also made with so many oils in mind because humans are actually very slimy, we just never notice it because our pores are so small and the thin layer of oil is hardly noticeable.
It's why bugs find us disgusting and wash our oill off of them after touching us, too bad they still need our delicious nutritious dead skincells and sweat to slurp up, so they endure it for the sake of food.
But we do, in fact, require being moist 24/7. It's where the "soft" skin feeling comes from, silly, being drenched in oil throughout your whole existence does that sometimes.
And turian metals do not, actually the oils might just bleach their shells if left to oxidise.
No, turian makeup wouldn't work if it was creamy or liquidiy like ours—even with the added lead.
My proposal: Chalk Makeup.
It's dry, it's crumbly, it's easy to remove. You ever drawn with chalk on street concrete? Would probably be the same as applying makeup to a turian.
And it has calcium! Yummy yum! Which the turians probably need a shit ton of, considering that most creatures with some kind of shell do insatiably crave it (see: sanils)
My last nugget of wisdom is that what's considered fashion to the geth/ai/synthetics in general isn't that far off from high-end, very personalised custom gaming pcs. Be it the pastel and white hardshells or the neons and glowing cooling liquids.
Hipster geth prefer the fruitger ero early 2010's aesthetic, enjoy that mental image for a while.

Shadowbone AU - Interactive Story
Macaque, who has been killed, anger and rage fueling his decisions as he meets someone who can help him, someone who can allow him his revenge.
But what happens when... the one who he wants revenge on has seemingly moved on. Moved on with a NEW lover. The very thought sickening him to the core. Good thing he is a patient demon, one who will find the worst way to torture those who have wronged him.
>>>
Chapter #1 - Cold
He remembered the pain that shot through his head. He remembered the look of rage on his mate's face. He remembered the anguished cry that echoed through the air afterwards too. Regret and fear crossing Wukong's face, ha, how ridiculous. He had the nerve to fearful of loosing his mate, the mate that he didn't hold back against.
Now here he was, icy chains wrapped around his body. He didn't know when the darkness had faded and changed to this... this place. But whenever it did was a long time ago. Now all he felt was cold, cold and pain and RAGE.
Rage towards his mate, rage towards the Monk he was bound to, rage towards the pilgrimage that changed his mate. They changed him, they changed him into someone that Macaque no longer recognized. Slowly he grit his teeth together, before they chattered together. It was SO FUCKING COLD. The chill seeping into his very bones.
Macaque took a moment to try to think of some way out. The cold causing an actual migraine drill through his skull. He was suspended in the air, wrapped in icy blue chains. Snow and ice surrounded him, a constant wind blowing through the area like a whirlwind causing both a colder feeling as well as he couldn't see anything else.
He was sure that his ears were frozen slightly over, his fur was matted and frozen. Mud and ice were spread through it from the area around him. He HATED the feeling. He had always had beautiful and clean fur, something he only allowed his mate to see, but now he couldn’t even tell that it used to be groomed daily. Now he couldn’t tell the difference between his fur and that of an unloved bastard.
Only those who were unloved and alone would ever be caught dead with this kind of fur. The very thought revolted him, he wasn’t unloved he WASN’T! He was a King’s mate as well as a KING! He wanted to snarl at the very thought, but before he could even think about it the constant storm around him froze.
His eyes snapped open, though he could only see through his one eye he was able to clearly see the silhouette of a woman. Dressed in a black and blue hanfu with long white hair the woman stepped forward. Her bright red eyes watched the Monkey demon closely as she stepped forward without fear.
“Six Eared Macaque, The Great Sage of Informing Winds, The ex-mate of The Monkey King, and One of the Two Kings of Flower Fruit Mountain,” her voice was calm and calculated as she spoke. Her gaze never leaving him as she stepped in front of Macaque just far enough that she was out of his almost non existent range of motion.

🩵 Bi-Han W/ Children Headcannons (Holiday Edition) 🩵
Bi-Han doesn’t celebrate Christmas and he thinks it’s a waste of time and energy. Although you encourage him to at least do it once for the kids
Of course Bi-Han does anything for his children, at least tries to for certain festivities
You try to explain to him how it works on this particular holiday. Which he understood, at least you thought. He was going to buy them the whole toy store.
“Bi-Han you can’t just buy a whole store?” You told him. He just looked at you confused, “Why can’t I, if I have the money I can. I am not committing a crime if it is paid!” He did have a point, but you advised him to get only what they really want.
The children would lay hints around on what they want expecting this year to be the year there father would get them something.
You are also not excluded from gift giving, as you had something special planned for him. With the kids
He wanted to find and give you the most beautiful jewels. Which your girlfriends thought was beautiful
“Do you think she’ll like it?” Bi-Han asked your friends. “If a bitch like me got something like that, I’m fucking you non-stop… like damn! Do you take concubines.” One of your friends joke
You never thought in a million years he would ask you family and friends on advice for gifts for you and the children.
The children were easy to please, and when it came from their father. MAN! They felt like they were in heaven or something
It was time for his family to show him his gift, something they learned themselves and practiced… With a slight help from Kuai Liang
They were all outside Bi-Han, his brothers, and the Lin Kuei. The space was designed nicely and Bi-Han had his own special front row seat.
It was slightly snowing, and there were lights surrounding this big square stage. You and the kids got on stage. The sons and daughters, all of you in a blue attire
You and the girls in Hanfus and the boys in blue male Hanfus.
They had swords in their hands and are in formation. “This is a special Christmas gift for our great grandmaster Bi-Han.”
youtube
When I say Bi-Han was speechless and loved it, he was speechless and loved it. It was so well performed and looked magically in the snow.
You all ended with a bow, looking at how proud Bi-Han and everyone was.
The rest of the night turned out wonderful, and this Holiday is one you glad Bi-Han and the children will remember forever.
A/N: It’s a LIN KUEI HOLIDAY!🩵❄️❄️

ACNH creator showcase #7, Kaylee from Canton! Maker code is MA-1900-8638-3339. Kaylee has made several of my absolute favorite custom designs -- I basically wear Mistletoe & Holly for most of the Christmas season (the way the tartan moves with the skirt swish programming is absolutely delightful), the Celestial Sweater is my winter go-to when I don't feel like wearing skirts, those incredibly textured "cardigans" come in non-skirt sweater versions as well, and I'm still in awe of how convincing the sheer layers effect on the Sheer Wisteria Hanfu is in motion.
(Dammit, I meant to turn the Sheer Wave Jacket around before screenshotting so you can get a proper look at the large rendition of Hokusai's Great Wave on the back. Too late now.)
