Hi, sure.

There are people who have expressed it way better than I ever could, but if I can be of any help I'm glad to. This is going to be quite long and hopefully not too messy.

Sources for the things I will say: Penelope's Renown: Meaning and Indeterminacy in the Odyssey and Penelope: from character to poetics.

The first thing to say is if you're asking me whether Odysseus poses a physical threat to Penelope (e.g. whether he wants to kill/be violent with her if she betrays him), then in my opinion there is no basis in the text to support this. This threat is never made explicit by him. Odysseus is repeatedly put in a position to think about a possible betrayal (especially when he talks to Agamemnon, but also for example when he hears the love story between Ares and Aphrodite while he is at the court of the Phaeacians) and he never expresses violent thoughts or intentions towards a hypothetical adulterous Penelope. And this is not an attempt to argue that "he's not like other boys" as I'm sometimes forced to read on tumblr, but it is simply based on the text we have. Moreover, Helen's fate seems to indicate to me that in the Homeric world forgiveness towards adulterous wives is at least conceived.

BUT just because there is no explicit threat of physical violence doesn't mean there isn't an underlying potential threat that all the characters perceive.

On several occasions the Odyssey tells the story of Agamemnon and how he was killed by his wife's lover with her complicity. This story is a great alarm bell for the characters, it is a possible plot twist that everyone must take into account. The comparison is immediate:

Agamemnon -> Odysseus

Clytemnestra -> Penelope

Orestes -> Telemachus

Obviously the fact that the stories can be compared does not mean that they can overlap. For example, Telemachus does not feel up to it nor does he seem so willing to take on the role of Orestes as avenger of his father's honor. If he did, he would not have the same reasons as Orestes to direct his revenge towards his mother. But be careful about this last point, because it is clear that Telemachus has some resentment towards his mother and that he perceives her as a threat. This is what Antinous tells him when they are in assembly:

"For I assure you that so long as she maintains this attitude that the gods have guided her to adopt, the Suitors will continue to eat you out of house and home. She may be winning a great name for herself, but at what expense to you!" (Odyssey book 2, Rieu)

So one consideration we can make is that the threat is not one-way. Penelope is herself a threat to Odysseus and Telemachus, and they are a threat to her.

Basically the characters' ignorance about Odysseus' fate (will he return or not?) in itself poses a threat.

In the absence of certainty, there is no right course of action for either Telemachus or Penelope. For Telemachus because:

1) If he faced the suitors alone it would be a suicide mission.

2) He perceives the threat that his mother represents as long as she stays in the house, but can he throw her out if his father is about to come home? No. (Also it seems to me that he is unhappy with the idea of ​​throwing her out anyway).

For Penelope because:

1) by postponing the wedding she is endangering her son's life.

2) if Odysseus is alive she is endangering him and she is also endangering herself by remarrying.

The threat exists because none of the three has all the information, none of the three already knows how the others will act. For Penelope the decision to remarry is the best if Odysseus is dead, but it is objectively wrong if he is alive.

So this is the potential threat, but we can't ignore the fact that in the end things go very differently for the ithacan family than for the house of Atreus. The Odyssey proposes the theme of the House of Atreus several times, only to then distance itself from it and propose an alternative. And since the question was specifically about how Odysseus reacts to Penelope's possible infidelity, I think it's right to focus on his actual behaviors as well, not just potential ones.

An important thing to keep in mind is: the rapresentation of Penelope as the perfect little wife who would never cheat on her husband is very imprecise. Penelope is a person whose thoughts are very difficult to know, and it is very difficult to predict her moves. There is not a single character that can explain with definitive and authoritative voice why she is doing what she is doing. This is continually suggested to us in the text. I will try to give an example that I think is very eloquent. Let's take the scene in which she appears for the first time before Odysseus (still in disguise): she tells the suitors that the time has come for her to get married and narrates that Odysseus had told her that she could/should remarry as soon as Telemachus got old enough. So she convinces the suitors to give her the classic wedding gifts. And then

The noble, patient Odysseus was delighted at her words, because she was extorting gifts from her suitors and bewitching them by her persuasive words, while all the time her heart was set on something quite different (Odyssey book 18, Rieu)

So he "knows" that she is making fun of them. But let's think about this for a moment. There are two possibilities: 1) Penelope did not lie about the story 2) Penelope did lie about the story.

If Penelope told the truth then it is not clear why Odysseus should rejoice. How can he know that her heart is set on something different? Is he rejoicing just because she is getting gifts? Or is it because of a sort of pride in the fact that she is so desired by other men (her value as a woman rises)? This second possibility does not seem to be suggested by the text in Odysseus' reaction, but I point out that this interpretation seems to be very close to Athena's plan when she arouses in Penelope the desire to be seen by the suitors. Athena seems to want Penelope to prove herself capable of bringing value to the home and value in the Homeric poems is measured in physical objects.

Or Penelope lied. If Penelope lied why should Odysseus rejoice? Penelope's lie could just be a little excuse to justify the long wait that now is finally over. It could be, in Odysseus' eyes, overwhelming evidence that she actually wants to remarry. Otherwise she would have invented something else.

Here my imaginary interlocutor brings up the concept of homophrosyne. Those two have the same mind and therefore must understand everything about each other, right? Personally, it seems to me that this implies taking the concept a bit too far, and above all it is not really supported by what happens in the text (why should Odysseus fall into the final trap of the bed if Penelope's mind has no secrets for him anyway?). Homophrosyne means that they have the same mind, yes, but in the sense that they are both difficult to read, very distrustful, cautious, liars and both always have more than one purpose.

The point is that Odysseus (and we even less than him in this case) cannot know what Penelope's true intentions are. He can know if she is lying and he can imagine what her feelings are (also because he has been reassured by Athena about them), but he cannot really know them. How can you easily know the heart of a person who always lies?

And be careful because the bow contest is the same thing, if not "worse": how does Odysseus know that she is not calling the contest because she has actually realized that it is better to remarry? After all, that is what her words suggest. Odysseus tells her that having the bow contest is a great idea (and in fact it is because he will have access to a weapon). Can he suspect that she has recognized him and is offering him help? In my opinion, yes, but it would still be a suspicion.

I've finished setting the scene, now I'm finally getting to the point:

What I find important to answer your question is not so much racking our brains to figure out how much Odysseus knew (or how much Penelope knew). I think it's important to understand how Odysseus behaves in his position of ignorance about Penelope's intentions. In my opinion, when Odysseus sees Penelope and then tests her, he is not particularly alarmed by the idea that Penelope might decide that she can no longer postpone marriage. When they talk to each other he tests her heart more than her intentions. He knows she is in a difficult situation and is very happy with how she has handled it up to that point. He is also reassured by the way she remembers him, by the strength with which she desires him. He knows she is doubting but he experiences her doubts as a challenge, because he wants to win her back, to prove to her that her feelings are not misplaced, that he is still worthy of her love as he was twenty years before. So let it be clear that Odysseus wants to test her and be tested by her.

As I already said Odysseus can't be sure of her true intentions and he knows that. That's why he is still in disguise. But the fact that they both lie to each other and don't trust each other right away is what will bring them closer again in the end. It's what they share.

So to answer your question: Odysseus and Penelope pose a serious threat to each other: they don't know how the other will act and must behave cautiously because of this. And it is precisely this that makes it even more incredible that in the end, without their knowing it, their minds are so in sync.

Hatsume Mei and the rest of the support class insist they’re just joking about the religious cult aspect of it all but also everyone’s sort of nervously laughing in the corner because the entire school is increasingly certain that they’re not joking. Basically, Hatsume Mei has such fucking weird girl energy that she has brought a religious fervor to the invention of support technologies. It is a holy mission dedicated to making tech that is sick as fuck. Hatsume Mei infected them all with her maniac energy and they all started acting like her about it.

Power loader doesn’t know what happened okay this class is insane it’s insane and he was busy putting out all the literal fires and then one day he realized they were call each other Sibling and there was a shrine to a wrench with googly eyes in the corner of the room and when he tried to take it down all the students just stared at him, unblinking and still, with hammers and saws in hand, and there’s a white board? No one can use? Because they are manifesting the coming of their Chosen One? He is afraid?? He goes to the Hound Dog and he says “Hound Dog you are the guidance counselor and these kids they need some guidance please go guide them I don’t want to get out of my car in the school parking lot each morning I’m afraid man I’m afraid” and Hound Dog goes to them and he says “heyyyyy kids what’s. What’s up with all this.” And totally fucking normally those demon children all say “oh it’s just an inside joke” and so Hound Dog says to Power Loader “it’s just a joke man they’re kids let them have their fun” but it’s not it’s not a joke they all mean it now. One of the biggest issues with support technologies is how they interact with Quirks. Take Izuku. He is a nightmare to make support gear for. Everything just fucking breaks on him. Do you have this sick fucking electroshock bracelets you want him to try out in the field? Haha, no you don’t. You have useless shards of incredibly expensive and completely irreparable plastic and steel. He threw one punch and they blasted off of his body in seven different pieces. Sorry xoxoxoxo.

Mirio, before he was Quirkless? Utterly useless to design anything for him. It’d just fall off his body. They spent every day fighting for their lives to keep his pants on and never even had the option of support items past that.

It’s like that with everyone. You invented these sick fucking gloves that let you climb walls like spider-man? Well they’re not compatible with Bakugou’s Sweat Powers, so fuck that I guess. Like. Some heroes could use some gear, but frankly? Most of their day was designing clothes they could wear without accidentally blasting them off their bodies. Iida was a constant, secret battle against chafing. Before Mirio was Quirkless, they were busting out a loom to weave his own hair together. Everyone had some kind of absolutely disqualifying quality of their quirk that made half their prototypes useless.

They were sick of it. The vast majority of people who became heroes had flashy quirks, and the vast majority of flashy quirks are fucking nightmares to work with. It was ruining their creativity.

Don’t you ever want to go nuts? Full throttle? Plus Ultra? They wanted to stop fighting the Seven Hundredth Battle Against Iida Tenya’s Thighs and start inventing the kind of bullshit that is only legal because the government doesn’t even know to ban it yet. It was their calling. Their holy mission. Completely fucking thwarted by the fact that class a literally has a hero whose quirk means she has to be fully naked for max efficacy. What are they supposed to even do there? Nothing! They’re all so bored!

So they all started sort of joking about Tabula Rasa, the Blank Slate, a figure of prophecy who would come with the most perfect, inoffensive Quirk that was compatible with the most batshit fucking insane support tech they could dream up. Tabula Rasa was their Chosen One. One day, their god of steel and fire and turning and terrible, glorious change, It Who Watched What Wonderful Horrors They Wrought In Its Name And Never Blinked, would bring the Blank Slate to them.

And they were going to deck that guy out in the most unethical bullshit imaginable. They were going to reinvent the gun but cooler and more morally ambiguous for that guy.

Anyway Izuku knew about all this shit and said “oh we can exploit the fuck out of that.”

So he told Mirio to meet him outside of the first year support course workshop without providing any other relevant information whatsoever. Izuku just said that there was someone he thought Mirio should meet, brought him inside, and took him straight to Hatsume Mei. He very loudly introduced Mirio as a third year heroics student so that he could be heard over the din.

He’s Quirkless.

Hatsume Mei turned to Mirio and whispered, with tears in her eyes, Tabula Rasa.

The entire workshop fell into a sudden and eerie silence.

Make him Batman, Hatsume Mei, said Izuku, as if any of this shit were normal.

Anyway, at that time, no fucking clue what was happening. But he knew the outcome would be sick as fuck. So he’s just been sort of going with it since then.

Power Loader immediately left the building and took a personal month. Nedzu asked Present Mic to help cover, who left crying after two hours. Aizawa has told him if he ever asks him for anything ever again, he will burn the building to the ground, and so Nedzu did not ask him.

So he just hired a new substitute teacher for every single day that that room needed staffing, close to all of whom quit teaching entirely after.

Anyway, that’s how Mirio affords support gear despite being independent and generally unpopular. Pretty much every time he swings by the main campus he receives a jet pack that also can control birds and maybe sharks too (they’re still beta testing the shark bit) and he says “Cool!” and puts it on his mortal body. Half of the support class is madly in love with him. However, Hatsume Mei, their High Priest, has stated that their god watches them all with its ever-jiggling eyes and has seen the lust in their hearts for the champion it bestowed upon them and rebukes it. She knows it’d tear them all apart if people started shooting their shot.

There’s no real narrative significance to that story. I just thought it would be funny if Mirio had a fuckton of support gear because he was a figure of religious importance to a it’s-a-joke-not-a-joke cult in the support class.

i think stephcass could have been potentially interesting if fandom let steph be herself and not ultimate uwu girl boss erasing all her negative traits. where is her jealousy? unhealthy obsession with her crush and complete lack of understanding of the concept of boundaries ESPECIALLY if that person is already dating someone? where is her almost manic urge to push away other potential love interests (and at this point i realized she would NOT have been so chill with ives if tim had come out much earlier yikes)

because i love TimSteph for the reasons you listed!! there's something very unhealthy and teen girl-ish in the way Steph approaches relationships. she's angrily jealous and she thinks about Tim in a possessive way. like she is just so consumed by him and it's meant to be male comic writers writing how they think teen girls write about boys in their diaries- but it comes off as incredibly toxic. it's one of her deepest character flaws and what endears me so much to 90s Steph. she throws herself so deeply into romance when she has it, like she's afraid if she lets go of it for even a second it's going to leave her. and god forbid you be the person she falls for bc you will never maintain a healthy relationship with someone she views as competition, she *will* sabotage it. and to me these are all pros of her character. i *like* seeing how vigilantes struggle to maintain normal relationships- *especially* teenage vigilantes. Steph struggles to balance her "regular" life with being Spoiler and what things deserve a Stephanie Brown reaction and what things deserve a Spoiler reaction. and when she's dating, it's almost *always* going to be a Spoiler reaction and she shades her relationships through that lense. it's why civilian partners for Steph never really interest me. (besides the fact they always feel forced and clunky, like Steph's recent think with Maps' older brother?) it doesn't explore the way Steph loves to her fullest extent and how far she goes when she's into someone. there's no sweet puppy love for Steph, when she's all in, she's *all* in. she will do what she thinks is best for Tim oftentimes by her own will without his knowledge or approval, and sometimes massively fucks things up for him. bc she's just so wrapped up in what she believes is best, consequences are secondary.

and sure, she maintains healthy friendships. bc most fodder with StephCass is very healthy and soft. bc it's a *friendship*. and it changes radically when Steph is involved romantically. it's why there's such a difference in how Steph regards Tim when they're just friends as to when they were dating. she loves him and he's always going to be important, but that obsessive passion isn't what drives them anymore. so it's something you have to consider with *any* Steph ship in which it's a character she's had a friendship with- that how she interacts with them as a friend doesn't necessarily inform how she'd regard them as a lover. and that's the issue with StephCass. even the StephCass content that *is* comics informed (tho, a lot of it isn't and while i don't think fanon needs to be based on the comics to be good, i do think Steph and Cass are difficult characters to tackle if you aren't at least semi-familiar with their canon content bc of how warped they are in the fandom-) comes off with such a rose-colored lense that sours it for me. hell, even on Cass' side, things she's *canonically* done have been weird and obsessive about Steph. but that's never explored.

(tbh dare i say it's something to do with the phenomena in fandom that yuri is morally pure and perfect and yaoi is always dirty and bad- there's this almost sanitizing of sapphic ships sometimes to make them perfect and cute together and while i'm not here to yuck someone else's yum, i do think it's *telling* that women in fandom never get to explore the complex depths of unhealthy and toxic love in the way men do bc if you make a woman evil, it's misogyny. if you sexualize a woman too much it's misogyny. if you write her doing morally fucked up things even with the understanding it is her canon character, it's misogyny and you're villainizing her. i can sit here and say Tim is canonically shitty at relationships and ppl will not. if i say the same about Steph, then i'm critiquing a woman and holding her to an unfair standard. it's exhausting. it feels like StephCass only ever exists to depict Steph and Cass as morally pure and in love angels kissing in the background while the men get to do complex and nuanced and fun things in the foreground. this thought has probably been far more explored by others with more developed nuance on it, but i just wanted to point it out bc it's a very real thing i keep seeing *especially* in the Batfam fandom-)

and equally i think Cass' reaction to this intensity and obsession from Steph could be interesting. Cass historically has had poor reactions to knowing everyone is attracted to her and thinking about her, so that level of intensity i think could cause some negative reactions out of Cass that would add some very layered conflict to the ship. some of Steph's most negative traits *do* clash with Cass' wants and needs. it makes the ship more fun! it puts Steph's flaws on display as well as Cass' flaws and her internal issues surrounding romance. StephCass could be so weird and fucked up. but it's been defanged by this fandom in a way that turns me off to it. i love both Steph and Cass and i love exploring sapphic Batfam ships, so it *should* work for me. but the irony of it being popular in anti spaces combined with no one being able to acknowledge the flaws either of these characters have for the sake of making them kiss just. bores me and it's sucked any interest i could have out of it. bc god forbid women just be a little fucked up. </3

They do genuinely care about Grian, yes ! They do see him as a Watcher Child, but despite that, they make Grian feel like a pet sometimes, bc he is a 25 year old man being scolded or praised depending on the day or attitude.

They also control his sleep and food schedule, he has no independence, he can't be in servers without supervision, so being seen as a naive kid isn't the greatest thing ever !

They pet his head, or show off his wings to each other by holding them out before he even knows how to control the muscles. Commenting how small and bright they are.

Going through body horror and being cooed at for it, is a strange experience, he feels like a circus animal, if he does try to act more serious, he still hears snickers or the coos get worse.

Though, sometimes he leans into the treatment, if he's really upset, he'll accept the petting and comfort. He'll feel humiliated by the memory later, but when you're growing wings, it hurts and its nice for someone to rub circles on your back while you cry. Watchers see almost all players as naive and needing their guidance and protection. Promising talented players usually are chosen to join them.

Watchers have a pretty different idea and standard when it comes to raising children, so that disconnect also makes it harder on players. I don't think the Watchers wanted to harm Grian or make him feel that way.

Soooo yeah ! Watchers see him as a child, in ways both good and bad, Grian wanted to be an equal when he joined the Watchers, thats what he thought--or was led to believe ? But he's painfully aware that they see him as just a kid and always will. He still gets to do Watcher jobs and stuff though, which keeps him going hahaha Even after everything, Aether still sees him as a kid, it's not malicious, she can't help it ! do you think there's a significant difference between the league of assassins in dc and the hand in marvel?

I am a bizarre person to ask about this, considering how I'm extremely not a comics expert at all. I'm aware that the answer can't be JUST 'no, because of orientalism'. They are definitely from the same wellspring of orientalist Mystic Evil Ninja Tribe. But actually yes there are pretty significant differences.

They're both Mystical Supernatural Ninja Groups, but the League's only strongly supernatural basis is the Lazarus Pits. They live in a remote area in a remote country, which is frequently where people train and live in seclusion. Ra's does have World Domination TM goals, so they definitely get involved in some good old fashioned Terrorisms, but as a general rule they aren't involved in day to day world stuff. Ra's is also the completely unquestioned leader and the al Ghuls are really the only significant characters to ever come out of the League. They also tend to kinda mind their own business as a whole and don't get involved in a lot of non-Batman storylines, and most of their storylines even with Batman are because the al Ghuls are obsessed with Batman as a guy.

The Hand is much closer to a yakuza or organized crime ring. They are much more solidly Japanese than the League of Assassin's stronger Middle Eastern influences. They are ALSO devil worshippers, but they just get much more involved in worldly stuff. Like the Nazis I think. They got really involved with the Kingpin and do more supervillain shit. Like half a dozen superheroes are constantly getting involved with them all the time, although they are very much regularly Daredevil's problem.

this might be a stupid question, but i see you as a kind of authority on john egbert so i thought i'd ask you. i remember a poll you made a while back about john's favorite color being green, but do you remember where exactly that comes up in the comic? i thought for sure it was in his letter to jade, but then i went to check just now to prove it to someone, and all it really said was that jade seemed to favor green. is it never outright stated, just implied?

It always has been the moment you lay your eyes on the first panel. John's Slimer logo and the Sburb beta logo. The color GREEN stands out.

John's favorite color has always been GREEN. This is a fact that has been stated in past John posts from 2014 and 2015. Why was it never stated in the comic itself? Because it follows the rule SHOW, DON'T TELL.

You could see John was going to say something, quickly spoken over by Terezi, who didn't even care to know his actual favorite color. What is the use of telling a person who is almost dead anyway? John has some really important world saving shit to do. Totally not him executing Terezi's selfishness and desperation to bring back Vriska. HA HA HA, anyway.
