One year since my older brother killed himself. These are photos of the Northern Lights in Edmonton, Canada. 

Sharon, Kurtis and I road tripped 21 hours from Boulder to Edmonton. We drove through the night no stops. Each night we went out looking for the Northern Lights but saw nothing, there were clouds all night and snowed the first couple fo days. 

Then on the day I dreaded I saw the most beautiful sight. The Northern Lights. 

Unimaginable. It was like a pink and green sunset in the middle of the night. It came out of no where, with no color at all really. Then in no time the green emerged, on the other side pink/purple. 

The pictures does not give it justice but does show a bit of the magic.

Escape reality today with these gorgeous aurora borealis themed constellation cookies by Pastry chef/cookbook author Heather Baird (aka Sprinklebakes).

Heather was inspired to make these while reading up about galaxies and coming across the Cherokee myth for how the Milky Way was created: 

Recently I’ve been reading about galaxies and animal constellations and the mythology attached to them. My favorite story is the Cherokee’s description of how the Milky Way was created: an otherworldly spirit dog stole a ration of cornmeal and ran to the sky, spilling it as he traveled, creating stars. 

So, what does this have to do with cookies? Not much, but I realized I had some animal cookie cutters on hand that I could make into fun edible constellations. I could see them in my head already as dark chocolate cookies with Aurora Borealis marbled fondant, speckled with stars. Aside from rambling on about constellation lore, this gives me a chance to show you how I marble fondant.

That’s good enough for me! And these cookies look good enough to eat all weekend long.
