Honestly, one of my favourite things in One Piece modern AU's, whether an actual fic or just someone's idea or fanart, is how you can reimagine the interconnected narratives. Established connections, narrative foils.
Sure, there's the big ones, marines vs pirates, but the one that always entertains me is Zoro and Mihawk. They don't even both have to be in the same story/art, because whatever modern scenario you come up with, they are linked narratively, so in my mind, they will be linked. They will always have the current best/aspiring successor dynamic.
Is Mihawk some world-renowned floral artist in your flower-shop/coffee-shop AU? Congrats, Roronoa Zoro is now a newbie florist aggressively swearing he will beat Mihawk with his new arrangement at the Interflora World Cup or die trying!
Oh, Zoro is the rough hockey player in your hockey-player/figure skater AU? Aha, so that means, there is a Dracule Mihawk out there, winning for his team at every turn, and is considered the most expensive player in the world. And he definitely got a penalty once for cutting someone's chest open with his skates. (Or if Mihawk is the figure skater, you bet your ass Roronoa Zoro has to be one too in order to dethrone him!)
The reason why I find this so fun, is that they have such different vibes. You have elegant, classy, goth Mihawk and rough, scarred, tough Zoro, but no matter what career, sport, hobby you give them in your Modern AU, you have to keep that rivalry going, especially when it's objectively funny and unexpected for one of them to be doing that career.

i think we should remind musicians they can absolutely make up little stories for their songs btw. it doesn’t have to be about them at all. you can invent a guy and put him in situations to music. time honoured tradition in fact.

You guys rlly don't realise how much knowledge is still not committed to the internet. I find books all the time with stuff that is impossible to find through a search engine- most people do not put their magnum opus research online for free and the more niche a skill is the less likely you are to have people who will leak those books online. (Nevermind all the books written prior to the internet that have knowledge that is not considered "relevant" enough to digitise).
Whenever people say that we r growing up with all the world's knowledge at our fingertips...it's not necessarily true. Is the amount of knowledge online potentially infinite? Yes. Is it all knowledge? No. You will be surprised at the niche things you can discover at a local archive or library.

Sometimes I wish we would start calling out the performative radicalism on this site for the poser bullshit it is. "Remember, it's always morally correct to kill a cop!" "Don't forget to firebomb your local government office!" "Wow, it sure would be a shame if these instructions on how to make a molotov cocktail got spread around!"
Okay. But you're not killing cops or firebombing government offices. You are posting on a dying microblogging website to a carefully-curated echo chamber that has radicalized itself into thinking that taking the absolute most extreme position on any subject is praxis but that anyone discussing the most practical way to effect actual change is your sworn enemy. You do not have the street cred OR the activist cred to be talking about killing cops, babe.

keep seeing undergrads on social media saying “oh if a prof has a strict no-AI academic integrity policy that’s a red flag for me because that means they don’t know how to design assignments” like sorry girl but that just sounds like you’ve got a case of sour grapes about not being allowed to cheat with the plagiarism machine that doesn’t know how to evaluate sources and kills the environment! I have a strict no-AI policy because if you use AI to write your essays for a writing course it’s literally plagiarism because you didn’t write it and you’re not learning any of the things the course teaches if you just plug a prompt into the plagiarism generator that kills the environment, hope this helps!

EVERY SINGLE DAY there are MILLIONS of characters in their late 20s who get falsely accused of being father figures to teenagers when in reality the description of "weird older cousin" or "step-sibling that moved out before you were born" is 1000000x more apt

so when straight people ask me why I say I’m “queer” or “gay” instead of sharing my actual identity as a panromantic demisexual non-binary sapphic queer I just tell them “ok look, when you’re talking to someone who isn’t local and they ask you where you’re from and you either say the name of the largest city nearby or ‘town name, suburb of large nearby city’ so they can get some geographical context of where you’re located right, bc they’re probably not going to know the name of the little town you actually live in.”
but if you’re talking to a local you can say the name of your actual town bc they have a greater chance of knowing where/what that is.
ok well when I’m talking to a straight person I start with queer bc chances are they aren’t as familiar with the context of all the little towns in that big queer city and need gps (gay positioning system) to find me.
if I’m talking to another queer person and I say I live in a suburb of gay city in a town called panromantic on the demisexual side of the tracks which is in the county of queer and I live off the intersection of non-binary and sapphic, they’d probably be able to find me with little to no problems, make sense?
