There is nothing so rewarding as to make people realize they are worthwhile in this world.

Thinking about human behaviour compared to animal behaviour again.
It's funny to hear people (the older gens) complaining that "kids these days are lazy, they don't wanna work, etc." What do we get for busting our asses? There is no reward. Many will never own homes. Many are unemployed, trying to find work, and nobody will hire them because they don't have a million years experience and a masters degree OR they want people to work for minimum wage??? People are giving up because there is no reward. Why would we do all this for nothing?
Same as a dog that won't recall when you haven't reinforced it with a reward. Your dog isn't going to do what you tell it to if there is no incentive. No, your dog SHOULDN'T listen just because you're boss and it should respect you. That isn't how it works. They don't think that way. And honestly neither do people.
When we went hiking Sprocket wasn't always taking treats gently from me when I recalled her or she checked in and I rewarded and my one friend told me to stop giving her treats. I told him I won't work for free so why should she. And he said "I do things for free all the time because I want to do them," and I didn't say it then, but I wish I had, but if you like doing it, that's the incentive. It's a self-rewarding behaviour. Just like anything else a dog does, like chasing a squirrel or sniffing things or getting into the trash. Heeling instead of going off to sniff stuff or recalling off of something they want to chase is something you have to reinforce. You have to give them something better so they make the choice you want them to make. They won't make it just because they *respect* you. They won't willingly recall off of exciting prey out of RESPECT. You need to give them a tangible reward for that. You cannot possibly expect your dog to listen just because and then punish them for disobeying you.
Yeah, Sprocket bit my fingers a couple times. The one time pretty hard. But she was excited. She knows how to take gently and I reminded her and she tried very hard to be gentle most of the time. I wasn't going to stop rewarding her for checking in with me and recalling while we were off leash hiking in the woods. I want her to know that coming back to me is good and in the event of an emergency I would like her to not blow me off.

OK, fair warning to the few people I actually managed to convince to try the game??
Rain world does NOT play like hollow knight, and you'll get your butt kicked if you approach it like that.
It's really hard. Like, really hard. Instead of the game literally giving you abilities in the form of power-ups and damage buffs, the only abilities you gain is from what you learn and your own ingenuity. You're a rat from beginning to end. If you just beef your way through it, it's gonna suck and you're gonna be confused and frustrated all the time. But if you pay attention, take it slow, and learn how the ai works and how everything interacts with each other, you can consistently get through and dominate situations you thought were impossible to do so when you first began. Now get out there, kill some lizards, and bully some old computers!

Hey, I had a thought for the fantasy au! So on one of the previous versions of the WH website, there was a rhyme for the show that went:
A house is a place with four walls and a floor,
with a ceiling above and a lovely front door.
There's a bed to cradle you safely at night,
and windows to bring in the morning sunlight.
Your house is a mirror of just who you are,
A reflection that tells you to never stray far.
Which I thought might make a good incantation for when Wally properly summons Home (I can't remember if that's ever required for Warlocks but hey, it's still a fun poem regardless).
ohhhh this. i like this...

bonus og sketch! big ol eyes...

Part of what charms and compels me in Jeyne Poole's arc is her reaction to her predicament. All the female POVs in this book are dealing with a lot of gendered violence, and they all deal in different but dignified forms... Jeyne is not a POV character and she is absolutely not dignified lol. She cries and begs, she is utterly helpless. But unlike most women in this book who are utterly helpless, she survives. It's frustrating how fans refuse to celebrate that, simply because there is no glory in it.

on rewatch, it stuck out to me that sokka would be an ideal political match for yue. sokka is a proven warrior, son of a chief from the estranged swt (who the nwt wants influence over), and a companion of the avatar. so how ridiculous would it be if arnook's plan in changing the mission was to sacrifice hahn (overestimating his ability to kill zhao) and marry yue off to sokka (esp since it's right after hahn is loudly insulting her)? and how would sokka react to the system being in his favor?
see i have considered this before and i do think there’s a bit of truth to it. arnook should have put sokka in charge of the mission considering that sokka has intelligence and experience that hahn clearly lacks. and frankly, if sokka had been in charge he might have actually been successful in killing zhao and prevented yue’s sacrifice entirely. also arnook is just not very smart tbh. like they are being threatened by a naval fleet. you know, at sea. their literal element. they have the home field advantage by far. they easily could’ve used their waterbenders to construct icebergs beneath the surface that would sink all the ships like the titanic. literally anything except for waiting for them to make an attack on land. but i digress.
i think that arnook would definitely have been willing to reconsider yue’s betrothal if he had known that sokka was interested, but neither yue nor sokka ever felt safe to voice those issues to him due to their very rigid sense of filial duty and what it means to comply with a patriarch. that said, i do think that arnook would be incredibly nice to sokka whenever they interact postwar, which would baffle sokka because he just assumes that this man must resent him for failing to protect yue, which was like, the one thing he’d actually tasked him to do. but arnook sort of treats sokka like a son-in-law and sokka cannot handle it and just avoids him as much as possible. so i guess that makes my answer to “how would sokka react to the system being in his favor” umm. he would hate it actually.

There is so much strength, in character and in narrative, when Cerrit walks away. He realizes so early that Laerryn will not choose different (that she can't choose different), realizes that their fates are sealed. And he leaves. He realizes this and leaves because there is nothing left for him to do here. There is no point to staying and continuing to plead with them, with her, to make a different choice. It's futile. There is no role for him to play anymore in that thread.
So, he walks away. He goes to put his efforts to where they might actually matter. They are doomed because it's not possible for her to do anything other than what she will do. He realizes this, accepts that his time to influence the course of events is over, and goes to do what he still has influence over: tending to his children's needs in these final hours, minutes.
Honestly, there is a humility in looking at all this and accepting that, even with his best efforts, he sincerely has no power, no ability to change this. That this is beyond his ability to dictate how this goes. This specifically is beyond him. But other threads are not. He puts his responsibility to tend to and comfort those who need him ahead of believing that he is capable of solving this, of solving anything.
Specifically because he walks, the Narrative Hand Of God—in defiance of the bleakness and futility of his struggling in vain this entire story so far—delivers him the means to save his children. Walking away is the right choice for Cerrit to make for himself because by doing so, he receives the chance to save someone, anyone, the only people he can possibly save enough to see at least one more morning.
And leaving is an incredibly difficult choice. Walking away from the party is not done lightly. He chooses to do what one NEVER does in this genre and in this game: look the end of the world in the eye and say, "I cannot do anything more." But, it is proven to be the right choice for Cerrit because the narrative literally rewards him.
He understands with great, sharp clarity that it is futile and useless to remain here trying to change the choices the others cannot ever make differently. He sees the path of inevitability, and he accepts that he can no longer change fate.
He does not doom anyone by walking away; he walks away because he recognizes they're already doomed. If he stayed, his children would've lost their chance for the dawn. By walking away, he gains the ability to save them, to save anyone at all. That is something he can still change. He walks away, and in response, the world gifts him the opportunity to change a small fate. And that means everything.

Is there a cat in cannon who got a good death who you think didn't deserve it? Especially if they committed crimes?
Tom the Wifebeater and his redemption death. No question. It's not even close.
Not only do I reject to the "redemption death" on the grounds of it being Tom the Wifebeater who is bullying others until his dying breath, even taunting Thunder about Turtle Tail is dead and the kits must be very torn up about it, but I reject "redemption through death" entirely. I don't like it in stories. It's a theme I deeply object to.
And again it's fucking wild that every time a character is a father, even if they are a wifebeater or a child abuser, the writers think that it bestows a glimmer of goodness into them which every abused child is forced to appreciate and cry about. Breezepelt, Thunder, Tallstar, Tom's children, all of them forced to reconcile and admit how much they wuv their papa.
Abusive dads in WC regularly get redemption deaths, too. Clear Sky dies saving his grandchild, Sandgorse died saving a rando in a tunnel, Tom the Wifebeater saving his daughter.
But Tom the Wifebeater is the worst example of it. Hands down.

"God grant that we may be guided aright, and that He will deign to watch over my husband and those dear to us both, and who are in such deadly peril. As for me, I am not worthy in His sight. Alas! I am unclean to His eyes, and shall be until He may deign to let me stand forth in His sight as one of those who have not incurred His wrath."
Mina...
Mina what the fuck are you talking about?
God doesn't deserve you Mina. It doesn't.
God doesn't deserve to dangle the promise of eternal peace to you. All righteous fearing woman capable of running towards ancient evil to save your dear friend. Insessant, and intelligent fiend who is all kind towards her love, and loved him with all of her might when he was not himself.
Don't blame yourself for the assault, and never think that you are guilty for not having the means to stop it. Mina can't tell herself "if I had been better" she can't. How many times must she torture herself with thoughts of hellfire that are so close in her mind, yet far in reality.
Mina tells that she is not worthy of His sight when god should grovel at her feet for forgiveness. How dare He to make her suffer like this. Mina is not a Martyr nor a Saint. She is not Saint Inés calling for the sword to fall so she can be freed, nor Saint Águeda screaming in joy as she finally died.
Mina's suffering is not holy, it's human. It's so human that it hurts to read. How were her ambitions in life greedy to incur god's wrath upon her? Why must she become another footnote on Dracula's horrible quest for power? (Why was Lucy not saved? Why?)
Mina is losing hope in herself when she is the most strong. She can't let herself become comfortable at the idea of a violent end if it means to be seen in god's light again. Mina can't become suicidal to beg and pray to the being that abandoned her in her most traumatic moments.
Mina may think that she doesn't deserve god, but it's god that doesn't deserve Mina.

i noticed nintendo hasn't drawn any attention to shiver's winning streak like they have in in-game dialogue relating to previous games' splatfests... really hope it's not because they're trying to pretend there isn't a blatant imbalance w splatfest teams
