perhaps a lot of my b*tw issues are actually due to my own expectations for the game and by extension my dislike for botw fans

#b*tw fans will sct like its the sinoge best zelda hame and like its leagues above and its like #its fine to like it its fine to not like the other zelda games (through gritted teeth)#it is a totally different genre. to me. yk. it feels like a new game which is fine thats what they were going for i surpose #its a huge rebrand for the series n i cn appreciate the aspects of it if i dont try to force it into my personal mold of what A zelda game #is.#also this doesnt include the orientalism with the gerudo. that shits fucked up no matter what #ir is NOT a botw specific issue #but yk. b*tw ws a very. disappointing game 4 me #bc i love older zelda games n botws whole thing is that it. breaks the format entirely andis different from every other game #which is fineee its allowed to do that and im allowed to not like it and other ppl r allowed to like it.. i just have trouble #and also it annoys me that a lot of botw fans r like. the way people talk about children's media is so bizarre to me bc they judge adults who watch it by saying "it's for kids" and like buddy...... who do u think makes children's media? hint: it's not children

#LIKE ok i will give the benefit of the doubt and say that there are definitely adults that dont consume more nuanced media #and they can have...... less than ideal levels of reading comprehension!! i watch a lot of cartoons. ive been exposed to many such people #if that's the specific phenomenon ur referring to then fine agreed no discourse to be had here #but its very strange for me (as someone who enjoys children's lit and wants to write for a younger age group in the future)#to see ppl completely fail to recognize the artistic value behind children's media as well as like. the personal impacts it can have??#and obv theyre important for kids but also for adults. ppl who wrote children's lit dont do it out of obligation. there's love there #there's care and thought that goes into it and children's lit can also warrant a meaningful level of analysis worth making about it #like it takes a lot of skill as a creator to convey emotional beats in children's lit where the dark stuff is a lot more subtle #or even if there isn't much dark shit in the story!! stories that are lighthearted and slice-of-life are also important and valuable #and im not saying you personally HAVE to like iy #but its just. weird. like sir have you been exposed to the fascinating concept that different people have different opinions sometimes? 🤯#anyway. i saw a post that made me mad lol esp since like i said i wanna write children's lit some day #so i get peeved when ppl turn their noses at it as if its somehow less valid as an art form #cozy speaks

Why do i have to be the optimistic one. God i can think of almost every way that everything can go wrong and be cynical and assholish about everything in my mind but everyone else is that way on the outside too and so i gotta stay opimistic. Well, i dont got to but if i dont no one else will and then we are all just miserable. Like my coworkers are horrible people who i would never talk to outside of work itself and talking about the people coming in over the border and how they're all just greedy and selfish or whatever and its like have you ever considered that they aren't like that and they are trying to make a better life and you guys are assholes and cynical. (man i really jsut like repeating adjectives huh). And like i gotta be patient too because theres no reason not to be. Being impatient expecially in conversations is horrible beucase then you get irritated then the person youre talking to is irritated and it makes everything jsut worst so why do it. like my grandma asked me 3 times if i was sleeping (i wasnt i jsut had my head under the covers) and i repsonded saying no every time and so my cousin that was standing next to her stepped and and went "she said no already" like he was annoyed. and like whats the point of that. you weren't apart of that conversation and now youre annoyed and becuase you had an attitude with that one single sentence you jsut said, she is too. Like bro theres no reason for it just wait a little bit or repsond better and then no one gets pissed. like it easy. And people that are already irritated and impatient at something else just takes it out on other things for no reason and its like jsut dont???? You can be annoyed at something and at the same time patient with something else. Theres no reason to make other peoples lives (and yours) worse becuase youre not super happy. You can still be kind even if youre going though something. You dont have to alwasy see the worst in everything beucase something bad is going on. you can see the good, you jsut gotta stop focusing on the bad and its not as difficult as it seems really. Like constantly ill think that ugh i dont want to go somewhere becuase itll be hot, adn there will be too many people, and everything expensive, and i have to drive for a while, and i gotta get gas which aslo costs moeny, adn i wont even have /that/ good of a time; but i dont beucase if you focus on that then you will have an even worse time. Focus on oh i get to hang out with my friends and look at cool homemade items and go do something outside of the normal wake up, work, and sleep routine and all that. Theres the "dont get me started" game that ive seen a couple times on tumblr and dude i would be so good at that beucase i can find almost anything that would make something unenjoyable and all that but everyone else can point things out like that too so i gotta take a step back and see the good side and rationalize it too instead.

This went absolutly no where but god i hate that I can't be annoyed or cynical or disrespectful ebcuase everyone else is and so whats the point. I should try to balance it out beucase once you dont see the good, theres no reason to so absooutely anything.

I had to make the plans. I paid for everything i wanted.#i didnt pay for gas becuase the one other person with moeny was kind enough to usually send me some gas moeny but still #its a lot of give and barely any take. like i think last years birthday was one of the worst technically. i didnt do anything. i didnt ge #t a cake until like a month after. i got no presents from my friends. i tihnk only like 4 family members wished me a hppy birthday.#just nothign. and like i dont like to be the center of attention but also. i do nice things for everyone else adn even though im the driver #it would still be nice if they planned (and confirmed with me obv) to hang out and see a movie or some shit idk #fucking so much give so little take which im fine with beucase it makes me feel good to be able to amke others have a good time #but still it would be nice to be on the reverse here and there but i dont think thats really gonna happen anytime soon.maybe once i get #my own place with my friend. itll be like he comes home with a cake and the other 2 and we hang out with a casual 'party'#but fuck man i dont even know if that would even happen. wishful thinking i guess but ykniw #anyways this went a whoel nother direction once i got back into the tags which i was planning on stopping doing but too late #guess i once again jsut wanted to get osmething ive been thinking of off my mind

more kitchen barb thots

playing music while mc and barbatos are cooking, each doing their own tasks. mc starts swaying their hips to the music- knowingly or not, but its enough to distract barb once he notices and he cant help but continuing to glance over bc the movements are just so captivating he cant help but watch despite all his usual self control. muscle memory has to take over for his task to continue but eventually even that falters (hopefully not while hes chopping stuff lmao) but mc hears the change in rhythm/slight clattering of the bowl and obvs has to check if their cooking buddy is ok!! and barbatos barely manages not to stutter as he assures them hes fine, just a bit distracted because of an "upcoming event" or some other excuse but hes got a pink tint to his cheeks from nearly getting caught staring.

at this point mc can either be oblivious to the reality and just reach out to give a gentle reassuring arm squeeze and a reminder that theyre 'always here if you need anything, we can take a break to decompress for a few minutes :) ' or theyre wise abt it and decide to tease the poor butler and go up to him, turn him to face them and put a hand to his forehead ""checking for a fever"" (pressing their chest into his at the same time ;) ). pull him away from the busy counter and dote on him worried 'but barb your face is so warm! i dont want my favorite demon getting sick :( especially since you look so cute with a blush it would be so unfortunate if the cause was you not feeling well' but internally theyre all >:3 lets see what it takes for his resolve to crack

i feel like the moment you catch him off guard with this kinda thing if you just keep up the "innocent/unaware" flirt teasing it would make it more and more difficult for him to pull it back together. but if he gets that moment then he'll start teasing back. this may be ooc rip and it got Way long but scenarios are fun lol

One of my favorite things about Barb is the way he teases. However, I also think it's fantastic when the tables are turned and he's the one who's flustered.

The thing about this guy is that he isn't easily flustered, but if there is anyone who can accomplish it without even noticing, it's absolutely MC. I have actually written scenes (though I think they later got scrapped) where Barbatos straight up cuts himself while chopping vegetables because of something MC did or said. So not like him! But that's the point! MC makes him do things he wouldn't normally do. And he can either lean into it or try to resist it and I think you end up with different scenarios depending on which way he decides to go.

MC's reaction certainly matters, too. If they're oblivious, I think Barbatos could safely pretend nothing happened and move on, but I also think he could be the one who teases MC and gets them all flustered.

But a wise MC who's all I'm just trying to make sure you're okay! Listen. I very much think that Barbatos would have a hard time controlling himself at that point. Even if he knows that MC is doing it on purpose. Maybe even more if he knows.

The best thing about Barb is that I feel like I can write him being a real troublemaker where he just messes with MC a lot, but I can also write him being the one who is easily flustered. Like yeah he's got that rigid facade, but you can say beneath it there is a man who is fully aware of what he's doing and deliberately does things just to get a reaction out of MC. Or you could say that beneath it is a suppressed man that gets blushy when you start to tease him. However, I do think either way he'd eventually give in because MC is the only person for whom he is lenient about anything ever.

MC might tease him and fluster him and get him all riled up, but as soon as he realizes what's going on, he starts playing into it. I think he'd use the whole situation to his advantage. Especially if he's like yes let's take a break because secretly he wants to get naughty but he doesn't want to mess up the kitchen lol.

mizutaigen is literally like. the first "toxic" m/f ship i've ever cared for. cuz like usually my taste in m/f ships is basically "unhinged baddie" x "badass wifeguy" *

* (see:yen/geralt. trevor/sypha. adolin/shallan. kataang but katara is sane and they're literally so wholesome like theyre traumatised kids in love who are each other's emblem of hope in a war-torn world! so basically they don't count. anyway. i'm rambling.)

and to that end my friend called mizutaigen yaoi-adjacent and im like. yeah you're right actually cuz like hell yeah non-binary mizu and bisexual taigen rights and all the gender fuckery in the show in general

but also like.

theres just SOMETHING else about mizutaigen that just GETS me. like there's a special secret sauce like the pheromones in that one sephora lotion attracting spiders and i am the silly spider!!! there's just something about it!!! it's not even the enemies to lovers trope cuz i personally am not even usually into that (obv it's fine if you are. but yk.)

so as i keep rotating these thoughts around i thiiink it's the fact that, yknow, theyre so similar. like i honestly truly think they could be besties in another universe: a kinder universe where taigen was not taught to hate. a universe where mizu was not born a girl in a deeply misogynistic society or half-white in a xenophobic homogeneous society.

yeah now that i think about it that really just might be THE secret sauce!!! like the fact that they COULD be perfect and happy together, if only things were different, if only they werent themselves.

smth v bittersweet about that's just driving me insane and makes me want to root for them to overcome all those obstacles, to say "fuck all that" (re:the world and all its fucked up shit) and find each other in the end. to eventually become each other's fav person and confidant. who obv still bicker and tease and insult each other all the time but they dont really mean any of it and over time it just becomes a running gag between them and no one else has to get it because it's just between the two of them.

Here is my question: i came across one of your posts where you wrote "actually gay, not bl gay" (it was a Post about Jojo and Only Friends) and while I FELT that I TOTALLY understood what you meant and instantly was like "yes 100% clear" Id love to read and learn more about what this means exactly and why some bls feel quite heteronormative while some dont. Would you mind explain the take on "actually gay Not Bl gay" a little bit? And why some Shows feel just more queer than others (besides the unbelievable stupid "gay only for you" trope lol)

There's actually quite a discourse on this right now mostly originating with @waitmyturtles and @wen-kexing-apologist (Post @killiru references above is here.)

I tend to mostly talk about this in broad brush strokes as a queer lens.

But there's a great ven diagram (which of course I've lost the link to) that approaches the idea of and queer lens by tunneling into its approach and intent:

How do different BLs intersect in different ways with these three elements?

When I said "actually gay, not BL gay" I was alluding to this discourse. Specifically the "about queers" category of BL.

There are characters in BL who read as genuinely gay (as in belonging to the queer family of this terrible reality we live in) and then there are those that seem more performative (to exist in a bubble of fantasy were sexual identity is almost unimportant, only the romance matters, everything is safe sweetness & light). For some queers this can read as manipulative or even exploitive (because it is inauthentic to most queer experiences). For me, it's fine... even desirable. I like the safe bubble. I enjoy the utter delusional escapism of it. Sometimes I will call this sanitized gay. (Since it is designed to make gay palatable to non-gay identified folks e.g. seme/uke.)

A sanitized gay BL may be unintentional but it is nested in origin yaoi and mm romance whose target market has never been the queer community, and whose authors have historically not been members of it, either.

Let's be frank, we queers are generally a terrible target market, we don't have enough spending power - especially not for a piece of pop culture as niched as BL. And as creators we really want our voices to be heard (obvs), which makes us produce content that those unsympathetic or uncaring find uncomfortable. (Yes, I know, fuck them, but also, they have all the money and the entertainment industry is a numbers game.)

So in the arena of office romances, just as an example:

actually gay = The New Employee

sanitized gay = Our Dating Sim

actual gay = Step By Step

sanitized gay = A Boss And a Babe

All of the above have the same tropes, archetypes, and premises. All of them are BL. Some are just... queerer feeling than others. And the characters in those shows (Step by Step and The New Employee) read as more "actually gay."

This has nothing to do with the actors, chemsitry, or how much we may personally like the show (Our Dating Sim is one of my absolute favorite BLs). It has to do with how closely those CHARACTERS intersect with the reality of queerness as we inhabit it today. It will be lots of little touches given to the drama by director and script:

language use,

surrounding friendships (and friendship style),

mannerisms and physicality (specially body language around straights vs other queer characters),

makeup & wardrobe,

facial expressions,

surrounding queer-coded behaviors by side characters,

layers of story nuance that indicate a complicated queer-driven back story.

Markers of specifically a queer identity are given to the leads.

These kinds of BLs are satisfying the "about queers" category. ("By queers" can be difficult to extract because IRL outting is involved. "For queers" is the rarest kind of BL, because making something specifically for us often alienates the majority of the rest of viewership/market. I could be argued that SCOY did this.)

I'm sure I've missed things, but I hope that kinda makes sense?
