the weird schrödinger's emotion that is "that character death was narratively satisfying and emotionally impactful and ultimately the best way to handle their character arc" simultaneously with "noooo but I wanted them to live :( :( :("
#this is why fix it fic for me existing alongside canon tragedy is great honestly#because it lets me hold both in my head at the same time#like. i would probably not be nearly as fixated on yi city had it not ended horribly with everyone at least undead#but do i want everyone to get a chance at happiness? also yes#it's a complicated emotion#important text posts#liseproblems

I really like this russian edition of classic books. Letting famous artists do the covers in YA style was such a simple but clever decision. According to the recent study the number of teenage readers increased, possibly thanks to these covers. I own traditional classics with blank covers but if I ever see one of these in the wild, it’ll probably make me go feral.
Here are some of my favs:

Dracula (art by Renibet)

2.Jane Eyre (art by Ulunii)

3. Little women (art by чаки чаки)

4. The Idiot (the hedgehog-omg-) (art by Xinshi)

5. Pride and Prejudice (art by Cactusute)

6. War and Peace (art by Xinshi)

7. Wuthering Heights (art by Renibet)

8. The Great Gatsby (art by NIKEL)

9. Frankenstein (art by Iren Horrors)

10. Crime and Punishment (art by REDwood)

11. Anna Karenina (art by Ulunii)

12. The Cherry Orchard (art by lewisite)

13. The Master and Margarita (art by Renibet)

The thing was a mound of flesh and mottled skin, as big as a barn and the shape of a pumpkin. Four tentacles as thick as trees hung limp at its sides; teeth ringed the gaping mouth at the top of its head like a crown.
A huge, sad whale eye the colour of wine stared at the knight. She could see her reflection in the jelly surface.
“We don’t know what it is,” she heard. “Some kind of monster that makes a perfect copy of whatever it eats. They think that was how the Dark Lord made his armies, feeding his minions to it so that it would make hundreds of copies of them. Do you recognize it?”
The knight opened her mouth. She hesitated. “Yeah,” she murmured, drawing out the word. “We found it in the Dark Lord’s tower, right?”
“That’s right. That’s where it ate you.”
The knight turned around and looked at her other reflection. This one appeared to be about ten years older, and had doffed her armor for a loose blue tunic and breeches.
She was holding a cup of tea. She had pressed another cup into the knight’s hand when she woke up here. It had been a shock finding herself suddenly out the obsidian dungeons of the Dark Lord’s tower and into this tall room of stone and straw. The warmth of it in her hands steadied her a bit.
“Everyone else in the party was worried, but then it started making copies of you,” the copy went on, staring up at the tentacled thing. “And all of the copies helped fight against the Dark Lord, and we won, and peace was restored across the land, but then nobody could figure out how to kill the damn thing or just to make it stop. Dozens of copies of us in a day, hundreds in a week, and then someone decided that the only thing we could do is just bring the thing here, seal it off and hope it starved to death.”
She sipped her tea. “Anyways, that was two-hundred years ago and it’s slowed down a bit. It can only make a new copy of us every few weeks now.”
The knight looked down into her tea. The copy had also draped a blanket over her shoulders.
“I have so many questions,” she said.
“I figured.”
“How can it be two-hundred years? I can still remember breaking into the tower. That feels like it was just minutes ago.”
“It was, basically. Your brain is a perfect copy of the original you’s brain at the exact moment she was eaten.”
“But the quest is just — done?”
“Yep. You missed some of the things that needed tying up afterward. There was a war, and a dragon, and some business about a ring.” She waved a hand. “It was before my time. Things are pretty settled now.”
“My parents?”
“Passed away about a hundred-and-fifty years ago. I’ve been told that they were very proud.”
The knight nodded. “Um. I don’t know if you know — we had an elf in our party—”
“I’m aware.”
“I — right. Obviously. Um. It’s just, after everything was done, I was going to ask her—”
“One of us did. She said yes. She outlived her. A couple of us have tried to reach out since then, but she wants to be left alone for a while.”
The knight considered this. “Uh — right,” she said eventually. Her fingers tightened around the tea cup. “Um. What do I do now?”
Her older copy shrugged. She had let her hair grow out again, the knight noticed. There were a few strands of grey against the black. “That’s up to you, I’m afraid,” she said. “A lot of us are finding work as soldiers and sellswords. We’ve done it for so long that most armies know we’re reliable and don’t tend to turn one of us away. Most of us are just sort of spreading out, wandering the world. Some of us keep in touch.”
The knight frowned. “What do you do?”
Her copy paused, tea cup half raised to her lips. “Sorry?”
“You said it only makes a new copy every few weeks now. So you just stay here and wait for a new one to show up?”
She lowered the cup. “Well,” she said. “I guess I just — I know what it can be like, waking up here in the dark, and it — it can be horrible trying to figure all of this out on your own.
“So I thought that what I’d do is just stay here with a pot of tea, and whenever I see myself again, I tell her that — that she’s not alone.”
“We aren’t?”
“Of course not. We’re all in this together, you know.”
#microfiction#clones#fantasy writing#i don’t really have a point to this more just#‘hey wouldn’t it be fucked if you woke up and the quest that was vitally important to your life was suddenly ripped away from you’#like a magic trick. one minute you’re on the verge of greatness and the next minute you’re told your parents are dead#and your girlfriend is mourning you#and you’re suddenly in a world that has grown without the need to miss you#anyways#narrativia

my favorite scene in all of literature is when Neil Josten wakes up in Columbia after being drugged, hurls an alarm clock at Aaron, dumps his water on the floor and throws the cup at Aaron, stuff his clothes down the toilet and squeezes out through the window, has the foresight to call Matt from a pay phone to protect his shit, hitch hikes back to campus, eyes back to brown?? shows up on Wymack’s door like 😜 and reveals he could speak German the whole time?? CHARACTER OF ALL TIME, that is a protagonist who knows how MOVE THE MFING PLOT ALONG
#My dad always told me one of the most important things about writing#Is that your protagonist needs to be the one driving the plot lol#like Neil really mfing does that#He gets the plot moving and when it does it HAULS ASS#One of the most beautiful things about tfc#Is that Nora creates the most insane world and as a reader your like??😂 wtf#But then she writes a character who is perfectly suited to deal with that insane world#it’s so endlessly satisfying to read. All the characters speak other languages perfectly for some reason? No worries.#so does Neil. They like fight with knives and love to slam each other into walls? NO WORRIES#so does Neil#Bitch and he’s 5’3???? MY MAN#Novel of all time#protagonist of all time#Solidified its place in the canon of great literature#nora sakavic#all for the game#aftg#the foxhole court#tfc#neil josten

Two statements about characters can and should co-exist: Pride and Prejudice edition
Mr Bennet has a close relationship with Elizabeth and provides amusing observations on the folly of human nature BUT he is a terrible husband and father who consistently neglects the women who rely on him for absolutely everything; Elizabeth and Jane turned out so well in spite of him, not because of him.
Mrs Bennet's behaviour is understandable given the era in which she lived and the subsequent pressure she was under to get her daughters married well, which wasn't entirely for vanity reasons given that Longbourn was entailed BUT she was still fundamentally vain, ridiculous and rude; such pressure, even combined with an absent husband, still does not make her behaviour justifiable, nor her a sympathetic character, as she enabled Lydia (whose subsequent elopement with Wickham almost ruined the family) for far too long.
Mr Collins is unfairly portrayed as a middle-aged sycophant in most adaptations, rather than the young clergyman who sucks up to his patroness in pursuit of a more lucrative living that he was BUT he is still a ridiculous character who you are not meant to feel sympathy for when Elizabeth rejects him; he is rude, hypocritical and thinks of himself far too highly considering how vapid he actually is.
Caroline Bingley is often too harshly judged as a 'pick-me,' even though her relentless pursuit of Darcy is understandable given his wealth & status and how important it was for women to make a good marriage BUT she was still rude, vain and treated Jane terribly; plus she was a hypocritical snob, given the manner in which she looked down upon the Bennet family's relations despite the Bingleys' own background in trade.
Elizabeth is incredibly witty, courageous and endearing and instantly likeable which makes Darcy's slight of her at the Meryton assembly all the more of an affront to us as readers BUT, while it explains her dislike of him, she is no means perfect herself; she had far too much misplaced pride in her ability to successfully read others' characters and consequently ignored positive accounts of Darcy in favour of believing the deceitful Wickham, given her prejudice against the former.
Mr Darcy was harshly judged by Elizabeth, even though there are many more sympathetic elements to his character than immediately meet the eye BUT he was not shy or innocent; he was always a haughty rich man who had never been told no, thought far too highly of himself and, ultimately, thoroughly deserved to be rebuked and subsequently made to reform his character.
#pride and prejudice#jane austen#mr bennet#mrs bennet#mr collins#caroline bingley#elizabeth bennet#mr darcy#fitzwilliam darcy#classic lit#text#my analysis#all these characters have so much nuance to them#it's why i adore the book and care so passionately about them NOT being flattened#like all humans they are flawed and jane austen very much meant for us to know that!!!!#i was trying very hard to say something nice about mr bennet#great gowns beautiful gowns#i truuuuly loathe him but don't confuse hating mr bennet for redeeming mrs bennet#elizabeth can't even fault darcy on that like his approach was wrong but. he had a POINT#anyway thanks for coming to my ted talk this is very important to meeeeee#1k

The thing about jonmartin is that Martin wants to be a romantic, he loves poetry and probably watches romance but for him it is a fantasy, a silly game he plays. Martin is at his core very cynical. Things don't work out for him so he doesn't really belive in romance, it is a pretty dream but that's it. He is pratical and realist. Dating Jon he has to remind himself it is real and he actually struggles with romantic gestures, it is something he has to remind himself to do, to remind himself he can do even and honestly who even has the energy and what if Jon doesn't even like it?
Jon on the other hand wants to be cynical. His first coping mechanism was pretend the things he was afraid of weren't real and goddam if he isn't afraid of love. It didn't really work to him so far so it's easy to pretend he doesn't care. But he is a romantic at heart. He saw love and he read about it and he has enough evidence that it is undeniable. And to be honest Jon was always to much a bunch of mushy feelings hidden in a grumpy (and bitter and afraid) trench coat. Dating Martin he has to hold himself so he isn't too much. He plays the grumpy unromantic guy at first. But he just can't stop giving flowers and planing dates (this is the guy that saw a theme park on a fear domain and considered how he wanted to take Martin to a romantic ferris whell date [until he discovered Martin was afraid of them]) and making all the silly things one does when in love.
TR: Martin is deep down very cynical about love but wants to/pretends to be a romantic and Jon is deep down very romantic but wants to/pretends to be cynical about love.
#that's also to say Martin is definitivaly the one forgeting important dates#wich is more complicated cause jon consider random things important#like jon has no expectation that martin will actualy do something to celebrate 'the aniversary of the first time you got me flowers'#but he will circle the date and give martin a flower and martin will go 'is this jon being silly or did i forgot our birthday again'#until jon just stops circling it on calendars so martin won't be anxious#jon is romantic enough that he is fine being the only one that rememberz#remember guys jon asked if they would find each other in every universe#jon belived he and martin would always be together#martin belived it was a miracle they were together once a great miracle but a miracle#tma#the magnus archives#martin blackwood#jonathan sims#jonmartin#jmart#teaholding

Martin is very internally in-tune and good at identifying exactly what he’s feeling and why. But he’s cagey with that information, and or at the very least, the truth/meat of those feelings. He’ll tell you, but he’ll leave the deeper meaning out, cards always close to his chest until he knows what you’re planning on doing with it. He could write a think piece on exactly what makes him tick, and he is absolutely not going to show it to you. You’ll get vulnerable Martin Blackwood, though, easy! He’ll have a deep heart to heart any day! You’ll just leave with next to nothing on him.
Meanwhile, Jon has absolutely no idea what any of his emotions mean or where they came from, but he also can’t stop himself from feeling them constantly all the time, and with no words for them, they’re just leaking all over the place. but he’s incapable of vocalizing anything, so he expresses instead through stubborn and fast actions with little to no thought or logic behind them, operating only on gut feeling, immediate reaction, and high emotionally charged choices when the chips are down. If you tried to have a heart to heart with Jon he would explode.
#it’s important to note that jon has NO idea he’s essentially spilling lighter fluid on everything#he thinks he’s getting a great grade in composure#however judging by how literally Everyone IMMEDIATLY clocks when he is tweaking tf out leads me to believe he is The Beholding’s number#one worst avatar of keeping things subtle#tma#jonathan sims#martin blackwood#web aligned martin i love u#tma meta#the magnus archives#the magnus archives meta#jonmartin#jmart#jon posting

“I was really surprised to be speaking about this big fantasy series and about a character who on both a personal and political level is somewhat at odds with the gender they were born in. That was something, as a nonbinary person, that resonates strongly....I think she’s always living in counterpoint to what her life might look like were she male.”

Aside from the Ghorman Massacre and the leadup to it (whew) the part of Andor S2 that most hits for me personally is Mon's extraction from the senate. Partly because it's a pretty solid tense-espionage-plot sequence and that's my jam.
But primarily because, on a spiritual level, that's a Rogue One Hallway Scene to me. Literally none of it works without a double handful of small, brave acts of resistance lining up exactly right. Mon never even takes the senate floor if Bail and that other senator aren't working the procedural rules. Nobody outside the chamber even SEES the speech if a couple of unnamed maintenance technicians aren't acing the malicious compliance game. It's possible Luthen never even sends Cassian on the mission if Lonni doesn't warn him there's a mole in the other extraction team. Cassian never gets close to Mon if her aide (on a technicality because she FIRED him like two hours ago) doesn't lead him through the building and loan Cassian his credentials. It's possible nobody gets out of the building alive if that same aide doesn't (1) put himself in the line of fire to distract the ISB agent and then (2) pick up her blaster and volunteer - in his formal civilian robes and slightly shaking voice - to stay behind and hold that gun on the guards and delay the moment they call in Mon's escape.
Something something collective resistance, something something revolution as a relay race, something something Remember that the frontier of the Rebellion is everywhere and even the smallest act of insurrection pushes our lines forward...Remember this: try.
#it's a great show in a vacuum but i often feel it fails as a *prequel*#in that it's simply not interested or engaged with a lot of the most compelling characterization and themes in rogue one#however this was one of the rare moments they understood the prequel assignment and as with everything in this show when it hits it HITS.#anyway those unnamed techs and also erskin semaj are extremely important to me#andor#andor spoilers#rogue one#my posts

The parallel in ep 2 of the girl detective telling the guy detective how in the end she is pissed because the story will end up revolving all around Jamie and him telling her no it’s about Katie only to come to the conclusion in the end for the motive of her murder to be that it happened because SHE bullied Jamie.
Almost putting Katie at fault for Jamie murdering her. Like now we understand why he did it, she was “bullying” him.
Oh smart social critic narratives they will never make me hate you
#it’s giving the same idea of oh she incited it bc of what she is wearing almost like woman aren’t allowed to be themselves bc it puts a#target on them!!!#oh wow what a great show I haven’t binged a show like this in so long I stayed till 6 am wow amazing story and acting#such an important message for everyone really super recommend watching it#adolescence Netflix#adolescence#Katie#Jamie

been chatting with a friend who's playing through PN2 again and i want it to be known i will not hear anyone say a WORD about Hollis giving Raz a hard time at the beginning of the game. if anything she is OUTSTANDINGLY accommodating to this random ten-year-old who wandered in unattended off the plane in the middle of an extremely tense situation
#psychonauts#psychonauts 2#like come on look at it from her perspective. she's stressed and overworked#her boss (who she's covering for) has just been brought in practically comatose#and she's just been informed there might be a mole in their spy organisation. which is kind of a big deal#and then this kid shows up out of nowhere like 'hi! i'm your new agent!! :D'#honestly she has every right to tell him to take a hike lol#but she doesn't! she sees his enthusiasm and commitment and decides to hear him out and get him a place in the intern program#even at her worst and most stressed she's someone who wants to /nurture/ that enthusiasm and that talent#and i think that's really important to understanding her character#she's great. she's a great person and a great teacher and everyone should appreciate her. the psychonauts don't deserve her
