i relistened to some OK KO soundtracks earlier, and DAMN it goes so hard for a cartoon with a cute chibi style. had a realization we will never have another bomb 70s disco funk and jazz themed soundtrack like OK KO for years to come, like have u guys heard the extended opening theme?? holy shit wow, that groove is a KILLER. The “You Get Me” ost, Shannon’s jazz theme and Ernesto’s electro swing battle theme, and Carol’s Dojo - BANGERS (even if some of them are very short)

Can we talk about AOT's soundtrack ?

(Spoilers obviously) I just need to ramble on about this soundtrack. I'm not even talking about the opening and ending songs (Akuma No Ko my love) but about the actual instrumental OST.

It's so good. So good. I don't think I heard such theatralic soundtracks for an anime yet (yes Demon Slayer has nice pieces, Narutos are iconic, Jujutsu Kaisen has some nice ones, but still). It really enhances the scope and emotional weight of the story, which, if you watched AOT, is immense.

It's my favourite anime so maybe I'm biased, but everything in the score makes it fantastic. The choirs, the string instruments, the electric sounds, everything is titanic (pun intended, ok I'm out).

One of my favourite pieces gotta be XL-TT. Just the choir gives such goosebumps and the melody is absolutely iconic. I remember being frozen seeing the titans for the first time, with the score playing in the background like doomsday just arrived, bells somberly chiming over the sinister drums, everything just melting together in this dreadfull and terrifying apocalypse score.

ətˈæk 0N tάɪtn is also such an iconic piece. These weird electric sounds and the fast paced drums... and then just the iconic part at 2:20. Goosebumps everytime.

Don't get me started on APETITAN. Zeke's theme is so dreadful it encapsulates the terror of another one of these abnormal Titans for the people behind the walls. It's so weird and sounds almost alien. And the small intermissions where the choir takes over, an amazing melody of despair and stakes at play for the survey corpse. Its so good.

Wanna cry ? Just listen to Vogel im Käfig. A bird in a Cage, that's what Eren was. It's so heartfelt and gutwrenching. Plus, the iconic part at the end. This score manages to blend slivers of hope with complete resignation, frustration and the realization that the situation will never shift to your advantage ever.

Then there is Ashes on The Fire. Such a masterpiece. It sounds different, since it's used for Marley and the warriors, but oh God does it sound good. The drums, the calm interludes where only piano notes play, the hectic string passages and the build up to the choirs chanting this epic music... it's amazing. It's so good. SO fucking good.

I’ve been working my butt off trying to financially take care of myself. And hey, it’s technically working out! But the one thing I didn’t account for was my family needing my financial help as well. Billboard USA Exclusion Zone Episode 16 (06/17/2023)

I'm so excited for this week not gonna lie. Yes it's mostly because of Metro Boomin Spiderverse mini album bomb which crossed over to the Global Excl US chart. But looking at the new entries and I just realized the scope of what "global music chart excluding America" really like because damn this is a very chaotic week.

8. "Sprinter" by Dave & Central Cee

It's kinda interesting to see a grime song having its biggest debut as I do think that grime might be the next big thing in Europe around 4 years ago. I do think this song has a good beat, but the lyrics man are just bad. One particular highlight is talking about Central Cee hooking up with a feminist...seriously.

15. "S-Class" by Stray Kids

Well I found another penis music-core again and it's due to the chorus which...what's up with the melody here?

20. "Los del Espacio" by LIT killah, Maria Becerra, FMK, Rusherking, Duki, Emilia, Tiago pzk & Big One

Remember that posse cut Te Bote that somehow became a hit in 2018? Well we got another one of those posse cut here with all of these artists. All I can say here is that it's at least more upbeat and fun than Te Bote. Apparently this type of posse cut is a big thing in Argentina alongside BZRP Music Session. I love how it changes genres so that it didn't felt stale. Good stuff.

27. "Popular" by The Weeknd ft. Playboi Carti & Madonna

From what I heard, The Idol is another show about exploitation in the entertainment industry? I mean there's already Oshi no Ko and Perfect Blue that have done this concept better but hey just like the former, we have a pop song to go along with it. Now this is one of the few Abel songs that I actually enjoy. 2000's pop-n-b is a perfect fit for Abel and I want Madonna like this. Oh btw fuck Playboi Carti, he didn't add anything to this song but a nuisance.

42. "Ta OK" by DENNIS E MC Kevin O Chris

I think you know how big of an impact streaming and TikTok has in music being more decentralized that we have high debut for Reginal Brazilian song that only ran one and a half minutes.

51. "Calling" by Metro Boomin, Swae Lee, & Nav ft. A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie

Short review for Across the Spiderverse: One of the best animated movies of all time go watch it if you haven't already. Now for the soundtrack though, I would say it's consistent and played it straight. But because of that, there's no standout songs unlike say Sunflowers or What's Up Danger. But Metro is still a great producer and this song is a great example. I love Swae Lee hook, NAV gave his best performance ever, and A Boogie didn't embarrassed himself here. I hope this became a radio hit...but I want this to be bigger.

61. "Annihilate" by Metro Boomin, Swae Lee, Lil Wayne & Offset

When the beat to this song was used in the movie I felt chill and really showed the scope and the eerieness of the Spider Society looked like. I do think that Offset should do more than his basic verse, but Lil Wayne just go off in this song. I don't know why he always turned up in these CBM films' soundtracks but I approve it.

62. "Am I Dreaming" by Metro Boomin, ASAP Rocky & Roisee

The production saved it from being mediocre. That string and the percussion is just immaculate and showed that he can do more than his typical trap rap stuff given the budget. Roisee got too much filter on her and ASAP Rocky just doing decent here.

77. "El Cielo" by Sky Rompiendo ft. Feid & Myke Towers

I think I'm kinda sick of Feid but with this song, I'll give him another chance because I like the groove and the atmosphere of this song.

79. "Pişman Değilim" by Semicenk ft. Doğu Swag

We got another first here as this is the first Turkish song I am reviewing. And wow this sounds like 2016-17 pop rap stuff complete with the piano, blocky percussion, and strong hook.

103. "Lilith" by Halsey ft. SUGA

So apparently Diablo IV came out recently and seems like video game devs seeing the success of Enemy, are gonna hired musicians to soundtrack their games. Here's one observation of this song, this beat is actually great. But seems like SUGA just cannot ride the beat well.

114. "Makeba" by Jain

This song has one of the tightest bass I've ever heard this year so far. Of course beside that this song seems to be influenced by some Arabic element to it by the sandy feel of the production. It's just a good song.

116. "Obsessed" by Riar Saab ft. Abhijay Sharma

I think I knew that this week is gonna be the most diverse one I've covered when right after a song from French artist that had Arabic influence, I got a punjabi rap song that blew up in Canada.

153. "Self Love" by Metro Boomin & Coi Leray

This is definitely the most underrated song from the Spiderverse album. I love the lowkey pop trap sound juxtaposed with Coi Leray voice which I would describe as if Playboi Carti going pop. And I love this song because the lyrics can be about anything, but the voice clip of Gwen at the end of the song made it seems like it was her song and I love that kind of soundtrack writing.

163. "Tere Vaaste" by Varun Jain, Schin-Jigar, Shadab Faridi & Altamash Faridi

Last time I talked about the soundtrack from this movie it was a ballad. Now we got the upbeat song here...which is still kinda lowkey. But as someone who only watched like bollywood movies from the 80's and 90's, hearing synthetic percussion in this song does threw me off.

186. "Topline" by Stray Kids ft. Tiger JK

...At least the trumpet is good here???

190. "All The Way Live" by Metro Boomin, Future & Lil Uzi Vert

I think this is the weakest song on the album which is such a shame. I love it when Future on Metro's production, but he's kinda checked out here. The production does saved it but this is indeed sounded like above average Baby Pluto song.

193. "Me Entere" by Tiago Pzk & TINI

Tiago Pzk was supposed to be the next big thing in reggaeton scene...and then he just didn't. Anyways this song is too bouncy even for me.

✨ what draws you towards your hyperfixation? what is interesting about it?

I love how not serious it was at first. And even when it did get serious it had time for a stupid joke. I can watch an episode on a terrible day and it'll get at least one chuckle out of me. It's bright and cheery media that came out right when I needed it. Unfortunately the noticeable shift in the last few episodes felt suffocating and mean spirited, so I hated how it ended.

🎶 if your hyperfixation has songs/an ost, what is your favorite song from it?

Okay, naturally I want to say the entirety of Let's Meet Sonic's OST, since it is full of subtle references for the hardcore fans of the Blue Blur, but for any other episode I'd pick Plaza Prom (another shocker from Tumblr user Plaza-Prom, I know) Mint Potion was blessed by the gods or something making those soundtracks. If we're talking one-off songs and not OSTs, probably "Let's Watch the Show"? Everyday I mourn the royalty free musical we never got. (x)

💎 are there any fun facts or trivia that you would like to share?

I actually made an entire iceberg when those were popular lol. Never ended up sharing it, but I'd like to shout out Mini Maulers for sounding wayyy cooler than the show name we actually got. (x) Another fact about OK KO I like to shoehorn into conversations is that it was drawn in pencil! Using light tables! Frames were colored digitally but if you ever think it looks hand drawn, that's because it was! (x)

Any comparisons to the Omi and Jermaine friendship?

Probably not but I'm up for suggestions. I can't jog my memory enough to make the comparison that would make both of them justice. Idk maybe something from the newer generation of cartoons but I'm not familiar with these.

They get along very well like Phineas and Ferb, for example. I can see Jermaine and Omi strengthen their bond so it could be more brotherly-like. But both pairs represent very distant personality traits AND INTERESTS, so nope.

But if we consider crossover friendships, I would mention which cartoon characters match Jermaine and Omi separately and then you can make your own pairs or sth. This is the only thing I can suggest, sorry.

So, Jermaine is that laid-back dude who likes basketball. I think he's very supportive of Omi and has that demeanor that screams: 'I can be fun but I'm also determined and I can speak my mind clearly.' When I was little, I watched a little bit of KND and Hey!Arnold and I can say quite frankly, I see a little bit of Numbuh 5 and that Gerald dude in Jermaine. But, y'know, that's not entirely IT. In KND there is also that boy Numbuh 9 - I liked the dude but tbh he's like a Rai-Jermaine fusion. An interesting character, he's competent and has brains, and delivers funny comments about salsa.

As for newer productions, Miles Morales... Damn, Miles Morales. I love this boy. He's like a goofier Jermaine. 'What's up danger' and 'Sunflower' from the Spiderverse soundtrack are Jermaine's songs - you can't change my mind.

It's Omi's turn now. For him, I have a few matches (some of them are Hana Barbera's sidekicks but I'm rethinking that choice and I'm like naah) but I'm confident enough to only present three:

I've already mentioned that from the previous post - KO from Ok Ko let's be heroes. Ko may not be a monk and is more energetic and up-to-date than Omi, but there are many similarities regardless. Especially that one they're both cutie pies.

Aang from Atla - similar appearance and tbh upbringing, no parents, but they have pure hearts and love their friends very much. Ready to make sacrifices to protect what and who they love. Very powerful elemental gods.

Robotboy. I remember I enjoyed this cartoon, can recognize the characters, etc. I'm just of the opinion little Robot is similar to Omi in regards to learning new things, exploring, being oblivious to many facts about the world, making mistakes and learning from them. Both can kick ass spectacularly, leaving a lot of mess (usually robotic parts of Robotboy's enemies and Jack's robots which Omi managed to destroy) Their designs are made from similar shapes. I think Lola has a similar personality (and fondness for Robotboy Kimiko also displays to Omi) to Kimiko so, I suppose, that option tracks.

As I said, I can't find any pair of two characters that match Omi and Jermaine and come from the same cartoon universe. For me, it's Miles Morales befriending Robotboy, for you it can be two other characters.

So, I swore to myself for the longest time that I would never do one of these posts, but I’m a broke college student and I’ve been paying out of pocket and for my medical bills for my HRT all by myself recently and it’s made quite a LARGE dent in my bank account as of late along with tuition. This scene in the Baymax! animated series almost made me cry as a transmasc person. I remember when I got my first period and was so scared and confused, and I wish I had a sweet lil marshmallow robot helper to help me deal with the emotional turmoil I went through. Someone to let me know it was OK if my body was changing, because it was just biology and no matter what I would always be the same person. I think a lot of kids who go through puberty need to hear that message. Not just trans kids or young women. 

I also rewatched Big Hero Six after Baymax! and the movie also mentions masculine puberty. When Baymax first scanned Hiro after Tadashi passed away, he mentioned that Hiro was dealing with mood swings, and that his pituitary gland had increased activity (on his sensors) and had high testosterone levels, GPR54, GnRH, and that his voice was fluctuating. Meaning not only was Hiro dealing with loss, but also puberty which as I am currently going through my own masculine puberty, can be just as confusing and nerve-wracking for guys. 

It just made me realize that we could have gotten an entirely different movie, where the whole time Baymax was trying to help Hiro with his puberty. 

And also how much we need to properly explain puberty to kids and help them cope with these changes, instead of making it out to be a taboo or completely life changing thing. Puberty is a natural part of life, and therefore, should be treated as such. 

Overall, I’m just really glad we got such good representation about this.
