The "Look if you're really uncomfortable I can find another room" one with Winteriron <33
:3c
--
Tony and Bucky stared at the bed. It was small. Smaller than they'd expected. More like a full than the queen that had been described at the front desk of the motel they'd finally found with a vacancy.
"So," Tony began, realized he didn't really have anything else to say, and finished with, "Huh."
Bucky was silent a little longer, then seemed to realize that Tony wasn't going to continue. He cleared his throat. "It'll be a tight squeeze."
"Yup," Tony replied immediately, popping the P loudly and immediately regretting it for some reason. He could not explain why. He began fussing with his suitcase. All it contained was the armor, but it was also the only thing he had to fuss with.
Bucky watched him, frowning. "Look, if you're really uncomfortable, I can sleep on the floor, or see if there's another room--"
"No, it's fine," Tony answered hurriedly. "And you know we were the last vacancy. They said they had no more rooms." He set the suitcase on the foot of the bed, then decided that wasn't right and swiveled to put it on the ratty arm chair. He stared at it for a minute, then moved it over to the bathroom.
Bucky grabbed it from him when he tried to move it over to the windowsill. "I'm really okay with sleeping on the floor, Tony."
"You're injured. That's out of the question," Tony said immediately, reaching out to grab the suitcase back. "I'll sleep on the floor."
"Colonel Rhodes already told us that you can't, Tony," Bucky reminded him gently. The reactor caused too much pain on a hard surface unless he was on his back--and then, he couldn't stay on it long, with the weight of the casing. "I'm already healing. I should be fine by morning."
Tony had already begun shaking his head before he finished speaking. "Nope. You need rest to heal. You're already gonna be on edge in an unfamiliar place."
Bucky let him take the armor again, mostly because Tony obviously needed something to do with his hands, and he was eyeing the curtains like he was going to rip them apart. "What's wrong?" he finally asked, at a loss for anything else.
Tony fidgeted around the room one last time before he sighed, finally setting the suitcase on the luggage rack at the foot of the bed. "This isn't how I wanted our first time sleeping together to be."
"Oh," Bucky said, like it was punched out of him.
What they had was new. Fragile. They both had broken edges that the other accidentally brushed up against sometimes. They hadn't been together very long. Sleeping together hadn't even come up once.
Bucky stepped closer and lifted his hands to cradle Tony's face between them. Tony's eyes fluttered shut, and he let out a wounded sound, leaning into his hold. "How did you want our first time sleeping together to go?" he asked quietly.
Tony let out a shuddering breath. "It was going to be romantic. Thoughtful." His breath hitched in his throat. "It was going to be safe."
"I know," Bucky sighed, pulling him into a hug. "I know."
"And the bed would be bigger and we'd both be able to spread out and Bucky I snore," Tony hiccuped, burying his face in Bucky's chest. "I'm going to be so annoying."
Bucky thought about telling him he wouldn't be annoying, but he knew Tony wouldn't believe him, so instead he said, "Not as annoying as me."
Tony jerked his head back to stare up at him, brows furrowing together in confusion. "What?"
"I'm so clingy. I'll probably roll on top of you and you won't sleep a wink because I'm so heavy," Bucky said, which was only half a lie.
"You're not," Tony began, and then eyed his metal arm warily. "Well, most of you isn't--" He eyed Bucky's torso and wide shoulders. "It won't be that bad."
"Why do you look so terrified all of the sudden?" Bucky asked, bewildered, because he'd obviously try his best not to roll on top of him, if he even slept at all.
"Bucky you're built like a brick house and this bed is the size of a postage stamp," Tony babbled frantically. "And your arm! I know you've broken three alarm clocks what if you try to shut me up?!"
"Okay," Bucky sighed, letting go of him. "You should go shower. I'll figure out the sleeping situation."
"Why didn't you tell me you wouldn't crack my skull like your alarm clocks?!" Tony sputtered, and then yelped when Bucky shoved him into the bathroom so hard his feet almost left the ground.
Bucky had procured a cot somehow while he took his very fast, very cold shower, although Tony was willing to chalk some of it up to the fact that he was obviously haggard, even if the blood stain on his shirt was hidden beneath his jacket. Tony attempted to make himself comfortable on it while Bucky took his shower, because it would probably break under Bucky's weight, but when Bucky came out of the bathroom, he scooped him up and dropped him on the bed.
"The cot will break," Tony sputtered.
"We're cuddling first," Bucky told him in a tone that dared him to argue.
"...Well, alright," Tony said after a moment. "I could go for a good cuddle after how shitty today was."
The cot was still sitting, unused, when Steve and Natasha knocked on their door the next morning.

reasons for there to be only one bed ˗ˏˋ ꒰ 🍊 ꒱
¹⁾ they’re undercover as a married couple, and as such need to act like one
²⁾ there’s technically two beds available, but it’s freezing cold and everybody knows body heat works best
³⁾ it’s a camping trip, and one character’s forgotten their sleeping bag
⁴⁾ a character goes to their friend’s house after an emotional upheaval in search of comfort, and ends up staying the night - but refuses to kick the homeowner out of their own bed, resulting in the two of them sharing it
⁵⁾ in a roommate scenario, one character’s bedroom has been rendered unusable - and with the couch being unsustainable in the long run, they proffer sharing the one remaining bed as a solution
⁶⁾ there are two beds, but only one blanket
⁷⁾ a character’s taken ill, and the other party worries too much to leave them alone for even a minute
⁸⁾ in a fit of anger after a mission gone wrong, both characters sleep in the only available bed because no one was chivalrous to offer to take the floor
⁹⁾ a character’s had a nightmare, and needs company to feel safe enough to go back to sleep
¹⁰⁾ the weather takes a tumultuous turn, meaning a late night hangout has to turn into a sleepover when a character gets stranded there for the night
¹¹⁾ it’s a late night at work and when they both grow too tired to continue on, the only option is the lone office couch
¹²⁾ a threat’s been made against one/all character(s) involved, and so under the guise of safety in numbers it’s deemed safest if they stay together - everywhere
¹³⁾ one character joins the other for a late-night conversation, and ends up getting comfortable in their bed next to them - evidently too comfortable, as the char in bed falls asleep on the visitor and effectively traps them there
¹⁴⁾ there’s no bed in the shoddy refuge they’ve found after things went sideways, so when it comes time to sleep the only real choice is to stay close together
and, of course,
¹⁵⁾ it’s the last room available at the hotel after a long trip

"I forgot pajamas. Can I borrow your shirt?"
I guess I'm an IronBat writer now lmao
--
"I'm glad you fixed your house," Tony said, trotting after Bruce as he led him through the halls to his bedroom. "Even if you do have weirdos staying here sometimes."
"Who exactly do you think is a weirdo?" Bruce asked as Tony slipped his arm through his. "I have my suspicions, but I want to know if they match up."
Tony rolled his eyes. "Clark! Obviously. He asked if I'd ever ridden a horse."
"I told him I hadn't," Bruce said.
Tony whipped his head around to stare at him, stunned. "Bruce. We had equestrian classes together."
"I told him that I'd never even seen one before," Bruce admitted, wincing a little, and then, "I was Brucie at the time. He asked me what I thought of the Kentucky Derby and I said I'd never seen a horse before."
Tony gaped at him for several minutes, speechless, long enough that Bruce dragged him the rest of the way to his room and into the bathroom to shove a spare toothbrush in his mouth. "You have a private suite," he garbled around it.
"I was pretending I was an idiot," Bruce repeated patiently. "It's not my fault."
"It's absolutely your fault. You could have said the word 'horsy' and his eyes would have glazed over. I forgot my pajamas," Tony added. "Can I borrow yours?"
Bruce sighed. "I stopped wearing pajamas because Alfred makes a face when I bleed through them."
"I'd make a face too, asshole," Tony replied immediately. "It would not be a nice face. It would be a very judgmental face. Can I borrow a shirt?"
Bruce raised an eyebrow at him. "What if I want you naked?"
"If Alfred comes in and sees me naked I will shrivel up into dust so he can just vacuum me up and put me in the trash," Tony answered.
"Jesus Christ," Bruce choked out, obviously trying not to smile and failing. "Fine, you can have a shirt, but no underwear."
"You want me to see the inside of a vacuum," Tony surmised, and Bruce choked on his mouthwash.
