Curtis takes a moment, but nods his head. He liked you a lot. Hardly knew you, but he was falling. There was something under the surface that he just couldn’t quite get to, but he was falling so hard, and it was frustrating. There was no reason for him to be falling. None whatsoever. But here he was trying to make you something perfect and it just didn’t work.

“Yeah, I really like her. I have so many questions, but I want her to let me in. I’m right there. She talks to me unprompted. Her dog loves me. I can tell. Teeny loves me. Teeny? This girl is so precious she named a giant St. Bernard, Teeny. He’s her emotional support dog, isn’t he?”

“Curtis, Bubs is one of the most precious people I’ve ever met. She’s had a lot happen in her life. She wants to love so hard. I think that’s why she’s standoffish. She’s scared. And if you knew…you would get it, but that's not my story. What I will say, if she’s letting you in, that’s a good thing. She doesn’t take that lightly. She keeps new people at a distance. “It’s not perfect,” Curtis reaches over, grabbing the notebook from his sister in law. This had gotten complicated for no reason. He didn’t want things to be like this. But he would do whatever it took for you to be comfortable with him. “She’s perfect, and I can't compete with that.”

“Then don’t,” Hayden shrugs his shoulders, wrapping an arm around his wife. “Take it from a man that found someone who was perfect. You can’t duplicate them. You can’t give them the perfect scenarios all the time. You can’t do everything. This is what you can do,” he gives a point to his brother’s early drafts of the cabinet. “Instead of trying to make something perfect, make it functional. Let it capture what you know her personality to be. Make her life easier at her store. But you can’t recreate perfection. You’re wasting time on doing that, instead of spending time with her. That’s the point of this to keep you more around her. Then there ya go. This is what you do.”

“I’m not perfect, Haydes.”

“That’s all you got from that, seriously, woman?”

“Haydes is right,” Hayden gives a proud smile at his brother, making sure Curtis heard Doll say that Hayden was right. “You’re thinking too hard. Let things flow, and happen. Spend time with her. If she agreed to this, she wants you there. It’s okay to be a bit nervous. You do have a school boy crush.”

“So you think this draft is okay?” Both Hayden and Doll smile, nodding that it was. “Okay. Okay. I’m just going to let things happen then.”

“Exactly. Let them happen!”

“So, Curtis, tell me why you still think it’s necessary for you to come here?” Doc puts her pen and paper down. Laying her hands in her lap as she stares at the man across from her.

“Well, before it was trying to work through my feelings of losing Jessie, and believing it was my fault. Then it was the fear of doing what I always wanted to do. I want to help people. Not in the way that my dad and brother do, but a more approachable way. Therapy is great, but not everyone has the means for it, you know?”

“Your book is completed, is it not?”

“Uh,” he rubs the back of his neck. Technically it was. And it was picked up by a publishing company. But was anything ever really completed? He had a life’s mission. “Yeah, I guess. But…Doc, I think something is wrong with me.”

“How so?”

“Have you ever had a fear of something?”

“Do we not all fear something?”

“But I mean something that is good and fun, and so fucking satisfying.”

The bigger question is why do you think that? Was it always there? Was there a break? Was it the porn you liked? A friend or girlfriend? Or was it the options I mentioned earlier? So! Slow burn - I like it! In moderation. I like a good build up but sometimes it just gets silly as to why they aren’t together yet. I also do think there can be this weird disconnect where the length of the fic is slow burn… and then you step back and look at the timeline and it’s like. 3 months or some other short amount of time. But overall it’s good!

Found family - love it! I love messy found family even more, though. There’s a reason I got so much into Batman. Just because your chosen family doesn’t mean you stop having issues.

Emotional hurt and comfort - adore it beyond belief, both romantically and platonically. I think emotional hurt and comfort is rife with opportunity to become an in-depth character study, grappling with events that can be glossed over in canon.

Mutual pining - it’s fun! I prefer it one shots though, as I feel like combined with slow burn, it can just drag out a little too much to keep me entertained? But there’s something soooo delicious to the dynamic of ‘they both love each other, but can’t say’ and it’s just <3333 when done right.

Everyone is gay - I do have semi-complicated feelings about this one? I feel like it depends on if the fic is using this in a realistic or escapist manner. A lot of times I find, fics don’t really reflect how joyfully messy all gay friend groups can be when it comes to down it, at least in my experience. Still, it’s fun to indulge in!

I've been an eager reader for LITERALLY as long as I can remember (the way my mom tells it, I literally taught myself to read which tbh I don't remember enough to dispute that fact and it makes me sound cool so I'll take it) HOWEVER as a kid I was a huge fan of the magic treehouse and bailey school kids series. idk if they were the first ones I ever read tho

11. what non-fiction books do you like if any?

oooh ok ok so when I was a kid my parents had a whole STACK of these nonfiction books for kids called "I wonder why" and each one had like. a different theme. my favorite one was "I wonder why triceratops had horns (and other questions about dinosaurs)" and the whole book was about dinosaurs and answering different "questions" that kids might ask about them. and bro I ate that shit UP. I think my family had about 15 to 20 of these books, in a range of topics from extinct animals to ancient egypt to reptiles to plants, and I used to stack them all in a big pile on my bedroom floor and just read each one, cover to cover, one by one. I must've read those books at LEAST 7 times each, and I loved them soooo much. a lot of the topics are STILL interesting to me (like dinosaurs and extinct animals and ecosystems) and it was so funny because the other day my mom was talking about all the old books the family used to have and she offhandedly mentioned those ones and said something like "yeah none of the kids liked them so they just sat on the shelf :(" and I had to tell her that I actually had them mostly memorized at one point lmao

20. what are things you look for in a book?

mostly I just look for a good time !!! I loooove complicated/fascinating worldbuilding, like with six of crows, and I also want to be reading about characters who I like/connect with !! if the book is romance-centric I'm less inclined to want to read it UNLESS it's very well written (six of crows is largely about romance but they're all sooooo well crafted that I just ??? love them all ???? and it's also balanced out by the platonic dynamics and overall worldbuilding and plot so they're very enjoyable to me even though the romance plays a big part in it) BUT OVERALL I just wanna have a good time yknow

I've just heard so much praise about this in the last day or two since the whole show has been released, so I'm really curious to watch it! I just know it's something about one kid going to university, planning to be extremely attractive, and then not liking another kid who's really attractive also? Or something like that lol, I love knowing very little about a show before I go into it.

Episode 1 (Apr 1)

setting up the plot with our mans Siwon getting chosen as leader and getting a pep talk about being handsome from the teacher (?) in the first 3 minutes

the people on the streets clearly thinking he's handsome even though he's dancing around awkwardly lol and here we see the true privilege of beauty because people didn't just call him weird under their breath and cross the street

same vein, i liked how easy it was to tell that people were impressed by his looks without like the over-the-top squealing and photo-taking that happens in some other BLs, usually Thai ones

i hope we continue to have these family scenes with Siwon's mom and sister

Also, not from this scene, but I like how there hasn't been really any actual conflict between Dawoon and Siwon. There was friction before they became friends but since then, they've been open with each other. Like this episode I was worried that the fact that Dawoon's parents hosted the competition would drive a wedge between them but Siwon asked all matter-of-factly whether Dawoon told me to choose his scenario and Dawoon was like lol they're busy, I haven't spoken to them, and that was that.

I wouldn't be surprised if they do have a conflict or two between them in the next half of the show, it would make sense from a story and relationship point but thus far I'm pleasantly surprised by how they've been communicating and not letting things fester.

Anyway I wanna watch ep 7 right now but I'll think of it as a reward for doing some schoolwork, hopefully I can do it and not just cheat and watch anyway.

I was relieved when he was like "I don't even get to talk to my parents" even though it's not a straight answer and when he had his phone call with his mom about writing a review of the scenario, I did have an inkling... but I decided to ignore it all because no. I'll choose to forget it until the story reveals it so that I can enjoy whatever time they have being cute and happy before the reveal

I'd love it if the conflict isn't very long and drawn-out and explosive because I've been enjoying how teasing and quiet and cute the interactions between the two have been but also... Dawoon making his friend/crush win the contest his parents are hosting is so blagh

Okay no but it really is sooo interesting to me that Dawoon just kept saying "No" to every question during their confrontation in the forest and now he just kept saying "I'm sorry" like he's not able to express how he feels. At first since he kept saying No, I thought maybe he has trouble with admitting the truth but now after the repeating I'm Sorrys I'm thinking he just has trouble with expressing himself in these situations where he's clearly in the wrong and has hurt somebody

Episode 11 (Apr 2)

Interesting to see the contrast of Siwon's family dinner with Dawoon's. How it's dysfunctional in a different way. Also, Dawoon may be dreaming.

This resolution is confusing to me, did they... properly discuss things? Seems very quick to go from how they were that morning to hugging in the middle of the street with no words exchanged. It doesn't give me confidence that they'll know how to deal with problems in the future. Also, I think Dawoon is actually just dreaming.

Okay, so that was just a dream/daydream. Wish it was a bit more clear and also shorter because I want real-life stuff to happen satisfyingly

That was a pretty good resolution. Dawoon came with the what he did wrong, why he did, sorry, assuring it won't happen again. Siwon also got to say his frustrations and why he hated what Dawoon did. In the end, they're both so freaking relieved.

Dawoon admitting that he was practicing his apology script on the way over. I guess it really is that he just doesn't quite know how to express his feelings in these situations and doesn't know how to answer back/reply to Siwon demanding things. He'd repeat the same phrase or he just turned and walked away at the end of last episode but I guess when he has time to figure out what he wants to say and isn't interrupted, he can get it out

wuahh Dawoon being more vulnerable toward Siwon, finally revealing he actually first came to the beach to contemplate whether he actually wanted to pursue film

Okay, I think that was a satisfying ending.

Interesting characters, good acting (though not great), family dynamics galore, nice visuals and cinematography, a touch/hint of GL, held my attention because I didn't have to go watch a Not Me clip or read a Not Me fic in the middle (I've done this for every show since I finished Not Me lol), the show felt natural, earnest, and heartfelt. I liked the conflicts in the show because they felt... real. They were scandalous in a sense because divorce! single mother! winning a competition via connections! but it all felt grounded in its portrayal. None of the conflicts felt like they were just in there to throw a wrench in the relationship because that's how stories work but rather, they were in line with the characters and their lives thus far.

I'm praising it and I don't really have many criticisms (ex. certain things could've been explained clearer, I think the dialogue writing wasn't super strong in some intense moments) but it's also not a higher rating because it didn't really mess with my emotions or fuck me up over the characters. I was engaged while watching the show but now that it's done, I'm not spending time thinking about the characters, I'm not going to read fic for them or watch the actors' interviews. It's kind of a forgettable story. It's a good experience while watching but it won't drag me into fandom.

there's a limit on how much you can be an isekai intellectual...

a bunch of analyses have been popping up before me all day so i wanted to throw my hat into the ring. all love to ppl who are exercising their creative minds + ppl like geoff here who just talk about these things because of fan interest but i feel like there reaches a point where exploring the "types" of isekai is pointless? i've seen ppl list out the different types of villainess revenge isekai or fantasy mmorpg isekai but eh why fit them all into separate boxes like that?

i think it's easier to think of isekai as a "type" (genre) of itself with only two categories: 1) a focus on isekai (lit. another world) 2) tensei (lit. to be reborn). this allows for a variety of applications and thus tropes that ppl see so many trends of!

with isekai - in another world

you see everything from:

pure fantasy (inuyasha, digimon wait maybe not the best example but in my childhood mind i count digimon as pure fantasy, fushigi yugi)

mmorpg inspired fantasy/adventure (.hack//legend of twilight, sao ugh, log horizon, overlord (LOVE OVERLORD!)

otome game-esque worlds >>> this is where it gets complicated with "villainess routes" since i admit there are multiple villainess tropes but this is why it's nice to not think of this as a "sub-type/genre" bc it frees you from those complications! (the saint's magic power is omnipotent, the white cat's revenge as plotted from the dragon king's lap soso cute!, the savior's book cafe in another world, i'm a villainous daughter so i'm going to keep the last boss wait i can't remember if she's reborn in this one lmaooo see this is why rules make everything hard)

with tensei storylines - being reincarnated/reborn in another world as *insert character/role*

the same tropes!!

pure fantasy (a returner's magic should be special, reminiscence adonis, the lady and the beast, light and shadow, i can't think of a manga off the top of my head for this ah)

mmorpg inspired fantasy/adventure (so i'm a spider so what i stan kumoko so hard, her majesty's swarm, can't name another off the top of my head ah i hate lists shorter than two things...)

self-insert based games/novels (fiance's observation log of a self-proclaimed villainess, who made me a princess, death is the only ending for the villainess, the villainess wants to marry a commoner, honestly games vs novels are different applications but i'm not in the headspace to try to remember a bunch of both lol)

*insert line break to give random ppl a break from scrolling but tl; dr just enjoy things for what they are no need to micro analyze*

similar variations occur in both genres (if ppl want to be super technical i guess i'm arguing that isekai itself is a massive genre that has the "another world" subgenre and "reincarnation" subgenre tl; dr) so i think it's honestly a huge pain to try to separate all these trends into so many different types of stories. for me personally it's easier to not get overwhelmed by this gigantic umbrella of "isekai" that spans light novels, manhwa, manga, and mobile games by just stripping each story down into its trademark tropes (aka character archetypes, story structures) and slapping "oh this is a person going to a world that's not ours" and "this person gets reborn as blank in another world". none of this "omg this power fantasy is such a this kind of isekai moment" or "there are 14 different types of villainess revenge stories and this series fits into this" bc AH labels! limitations! circle-jerks via ppl trying to compartmentalize everything and sound smart for leaving a comment on story analysis instead of ooh-ahhing over a character's face! dividing things into light novel manga vs manga vs korean manhwa ft. female characters!

the last bit is mainly why i feel frustrated by ppl's insistence to group everything?

the video linked at the beginning of the post (honestly good video essay, i enjoyed it, i just kept thinking in my head the whole time "marimo these are tropes do not take the genre talk literally") has a baby comment thread talking about "korean isekai manhwas" as a genre featuring nothing but reincarnated villainess' and i can't.

like i cannot acknowledge that as a genre of any sort. the energy i felt reading through some of those insights takes me back to 2012 when all yt americans discovered k-pop and deemed all korean music k-pop from then on! (ppl still do this now, yes you are seen and don't talk to me pls i don't like you. k-pop is korean pop music and nothing less and nothing more. take a few seconds and try to parse apart aspects of korean culture instead of slamming everything into a monolithic label that has the letter k and a hyphen.) it feels so odd to see a bunch of young ppl on ig and tiktok acknowledge korean media that happens to be in the form of a webtoon as "oh stories all about young girls becoming villains in stories they made/played" bc it feels so reductive u.u

(positionality disclaimer that i'm praying isn't actually necessary: i am a 3rd-generation korean of japanese descent do not fite me i am exhausted irl of ppl asking for validation/verification bc massive shove off.)

breaking news! korean manhwa...is just as multifaceted as japanese manga...bc how can comics as an art-form not have multiple genres...huh such a shocker?!?! same likely applies to media in other parts of the world like chinese manhwa and french comics--not my place to explain either of those i just know those industries exist bc of wakfu and donghua shows by Tencent.

at the end of the day it's not like analyzing any kind of isekai is wrong--absolutely not!! i think it can be super fun to think about how isekai elements complicate a story (MCs trying to go back home, ppl from the og world, reincarnation plot-twists) or maybe even bash a series for including some kind of other world element when they could have just written a super fun fantasy.

insert marimo's brief ramble that hey you can get sick of truck-kun's hitting disillusioned guys who happen to be super duper smart or girls who happen to be master chefs/craftsmen but transporting a fully-grown being into a fantasy setting is the ultimate cheat code for making mundane modern technology seem cool and overpowered, and being reincarnated as a fully grown person in a world with a pre-made story/game set-up completely bypasses the need for an author to slowly flesh out world-building in a natural progression so isekai is actually a really smart writing tool it's just that there are some series where the author didn't use it well at all and it's cheesy or clearly isekai was misused as a vehicle for character/story development and it was pointless *DEEP BREATH OUT*

in this essay i will argue...lol i am such a culture studies major!! if i were an english major i would be talking all about writing but here i am having a side-tangent about world-building via someone being reborn wow i love this for me (don't get me started on when an author has someone reincarnate as a baby and the story is mostly them having warm fluffy moments with their family--typically father figures--and getting lots of powers i could and would and probably will rant about east asian toxicity)

but anyway am i crazy????? like yes for being passionate about the technical use of a word like genre (i am a scorpio rising let me be fussy pls) but i don't think it's a lot to ask for ppl to not unironically see "villainess revenge isekai" as the definition of korean manhwa.

idk as someone who resonates with why japanese isekai is so popular domestically + why a lot of korean manhwa feat. the same tropes (it's not for great reasons lads it's actually depressing tbh) i'm just starting to feel kind of pained by the generalization and need to separate "cute japanese girl in an otome game"/"japanese boy finds a harem in another world" from "korean girl dies and comes back as a villainess" bc they are just! applications to the same story device!!

probably a single dad, he just seems like the type of person who didn't have one of their parents :( and it was his dad's family as a whole, how they were so willing to help each other (it's a small family, grandparents and 2 uncles with their wives and kids)

yes, 2 brothers (twins) and a little sister, he's the oldest. and he was closer to his dad, his little sister coming in second, but he loved his little brothers just as much :)

i think i answered this one in the last one KGJFDKSLDKF 1 dad and 4 kids (angus - twins - little sister) and they got along really well! they were all strong, independent and loud people in their own ways, but were also responsible and reliable, so they synced up really good :-)

i think. i never really thought about robbie's family, but he probably had a mom and a dad who had a... complicated relationship. and i think his mom had the most impact oh him, or maybe his grandma 🤔

ok so. robbie's parents loved each other. and they had a child and loved the child. but as robbie got older, their relationship got cold and they turned into like. friends. they still did things together and did family events with robbie, but he felt that as soon he moved over, his parents would get divorced. which they did, but that's for later. both mom and dad were reserved people, but dad was a bit distant because of work and not. making a move to talk with his own son. don't get me wrong he loved robbie more than life he just didn't know what to say, so robbie always drifted more to his mom, who besides being reserved and quiet as well, listened to robbie talk and knew what he liked. they all worked together as a family, though

So, again, the short summary I write up is ‘monsterfucking, but good’. The series is set in a post-apocalyptic word where a tear opened between our world and a monster world and earth went to shit XD and now monsters roam the earth. I read the first one thinking it was just gonna be erotica but it WASNT. These books are SO damn well-written it’s amazing, and each one gets better than the last, which i never think is possible and YET!!!

The Misadventures of an Amateur Naturalist, Ceinwen Langley

Sapphic beauty and the beast in 1867, featuring a young lady who is determined to become a famous adventure and naturalist and runs off to find proof of a wild animal in the woods to bring the proof to a national science exposition and instead takes shelter in an abandoned castle inhabited by a beast... This seemed adorable and I went into it holding my breath because period pieces aren’t often my cup of tea, but it was SO GOOD. SO. GOOD.

Fragile Remedy, Marina Ingrande Mora

Gave this a try for the hell of it and it was so good, it was 1000% character-driven in the sense that, if you look at the story JUST for the plot it isn’t groundbreaking, but the way Mora wrote the emotional depth of each character and the complicated, nuanced, sometimes twisted relationships between each other was GORGEOUS and the story stayed true to those relationships and I LOVED that because so often it seems that the characters go against their emotional grain in the name of plot, and this definitely did not happen in this book.

(Oh and I saw you had another ask there too but I think I may have misunderstood the prompt/what was being asked? In any case I should probablt edit the paragraphs of brain vomit that came out of that but until then here's more paragraphs of brain vomit, uh... sorry 😔)

Anyway...

Headcanons for lawryght can vary greatly from fic verse to fic verse but let's see curtent HC generally...

These three getting together in a canon-like universe...

The RyukxLight will either be established relationship or at the very least Ryuk is more helpful to Light and his plans than in canon to the point Light feels secure enough in his position so he can give L a chance and not feel like he has to kill him immediately so a relationship could actually develop between Light and L beyond "oh no, he's hot... I still have to kill him." (Also expect Light to be even more arrogant and insufferable because he thinks he's immortal and has the power of deathgod and anime on his side.)

Ryuk and Light getting together: And then they were roommates (oh my they were roommates) and there was only one bed--Shinigami don't really need to sleep but Light doesn't know that and the bed is comfy so Ryuk doesn't fell the need to tell him.

They are both extremely bored. Ryuk is absolutely fascinated with this human--he may not be on Light's side (or so he claims) but the entertainment value is beyond his wildest dreams. He is smitten, even if he doesn't admit it. If Light is curious about something hell try at least once... Or Light may be trying to get free Shinigami eyes out of him and they catch feelings.

L enters the picture... Ryuk doesn't mind sharing 1. Hes immortal and bored and... two interesting humans! This is so cool! 2. Shinigami don't have the same ideas about monogamy. 3. Headcanons about Ryuk vary depending on if rule 36 valid up to this point in the ficverse. (I.e. Chad!Ryuk vs. Virgin!Ryuk)

L and Ryuk--L is very disturbed to learn that his case actually has a supernatural component and is more leery of Ryuk than of Light at first. This lasts for all of the moment it takes to remember that Light is Kira and Ryuk is afraid of tennis balls.

After 5 minutes of soul searching, L can admit to himself he has a thing for monsters--both internal and external.

Assuming they are all alive and this takes place in early canon this shippable version of L is probably more interested in having fun then bringing Kira to justice. Either that or he has become disillusioned with the status quo or hurt and and wants revenge to the point that he's willing to entertain Light's way of doing things.

If its post series, maybe Ryuk is bored so goes looking for Light in Mu and ends up pulling both Light and L out of Mu because their souls are intertwined and once restored as humans or Shinigami or something shippable in the afterlife then it's just learning to rely on each other as they forge a new arrangement in the Shinigami realm.

Top/bottom it's not assigned seating Regardless of bedroom positions or what arrangement they have out of the bedroom Light is the dom/one in charge of this arrangement in bed... but subs L and Ryuk unionize and gang up on him. Light is a dom in bed but not always a top. L as a sub but not always bottom. Ryuk as a service top or power bottom. Ryuk doesn't really feel pain like humans do and will go with whatever he and his partners find interesting.

Contrary to rumor Light and L aren't always fighting over who gets to top. Fighting is for chess matches, clashes of ideology, and the last chocolate eclaire--not the bedroom. Consent, safe words, and mutual respect are all very important.

Light is very dom. In every relationship before or since. Except there's Ryuk, looming over him. Making him feel kinda excited and confused and then theres that stupid sexy voice of his... But ryuk is the exception. (But he might let L fuck him if he asks nicely and submits to Kira's reign.)

When they sleep together Ryuk likes to keep them both wrapped in his wings. He likes being the little spoon sometimes though...

L gets Ryuk addicted to apple desserts.

Light frequently ends up cleaning up after the other two. Ryuk helps when he remembers but typically L is a brat.

Light: How can you stand to live like this?

Ryuk: I was formed in a dustbowl.

Light: Yes, it shows.

L [throwing candy wrappers on the ground]: Why are you doing that, that's what Watari is for?

Superhero aus (current wips)

Winning and ruling the world(s) au (current wips)

Light gets in trouble (of either a mundane or supernatural variety) and Ryuk goes to L to ask for his help because he's the only human he can think of who would be clever enough to help Light and because of supernatural restrictions Ryuk can't save Light by himself. L is annoyed to have his fun ruined by having it confirmed that Light is Kira in this way, pissed that Light could get himself into a situation like this, and also pissed at himself that Ryuk doesn't even need to threaten him to want to risk everything to save him. After they save Light, L decides there's no point in continuing the kira case because it no longer interests him. He returns INTERPOLs money and after Light recovers from his ordeal the three go on vacation looking for something interesting but less hazardous than their previous ordeal. L becomes fascinated with the supernatural and wants to go ghost and cryptid hunting, seeking out ancient mysteries and Ryuk has plenty of leads in that. Light is still more interested in becoming god of the new world but "fine, if you guys insist..." (he doesn't want to admit he's having fun too). They drive around in L's pink crepe van huntjng ghosts, solving mysteries. Light occasionally writes the names of murderous jerks and people who are assholes to L thst they meet along the way while Ryuk laughs and L scowls in a mildly disapproving way but never really discourages him.

Au inverting the dynamics so its established relationship of lawlight first and then Ryuk joins the polycule: AU where Light and L are the same age and are childhood friends and when Light finds the Death Note they become Kira together. Ryuk is fascinated by them both and slowburn they realize their feelings for each other.

Or... Human!Ryuk and mundane college AU Ryuk is in a metal band and is probably studying art and helps rival law students Ligtt and L to chill... at least until Ryuk gets in trouble for drug possession and then Light and L compete to be his better defense counsel.

Monster AU werewolf or vampire au that's canon adjacent--Ryuk bites Light, Light goes on to monster better than Ryuk does then Light bites L, the monster hunter who falls for him...

7. Haunted house au

8. The quarantine au--Light is annoyed because now killing as Kira feels rather pointless. L is annoyed because this is boring. Ryuk is having a blast because they're playing with him a whole lot more. If L and Light doesn't just use the L screen, Ryuk is always in the background, having floating, juggling apples photobomb the zoom calls.

And suddenly Ryuk is important.

Ryuk runs errand for them because he has no danger of catching the plague. They play video games, watch movies, bitch at each other, and get into pointless arguments over stupid things.

Also L makes them custom masks modeled after Ryuk's fangs just because.

Other ideas:

Wammys house and lawryght

Option 1: Wammy's house tooth rotting fluff, adopting all the orphans

Option 2: Wammy's house evil, B was right. It's really just about being raised as a weapon. It's like the stormtrooper program for genius orphans that may not have actually been orphans before the institute took an interest in them.

Option 3: Wammy's house complicated. The institute really is trying to do better, is the best place for the kids and while not perfect its closest thing to home/family they have.

Lawryght and Morality

These 3 can be awful enablers of each other's worst qualities. Then again...

Light: Huh, Ryuk thinks we're going too far. Maybe we should rethink this.

Finding a home together

With Kira and a Shinigami as his boyfriend L feels secure enough to do more normal things he's been denied all his life.

With Ryuks help, Light finds the names of all of L's major enemies and gets to writing in the Death Note.

Light: Be mad if you want. I'm not sorry.

L tries to be mad, and fails. He can't help but feel relieved that they're gone.

He might even entertain the thought of having a permanent address.

He still enjoys traveling though.

Also L gets a kitten

The cat loves chasing Ryuk's feathers.

The cat likes Light's lap the best because Light went out of his way not to look at the cat.

...Okay, I'll bit. What is Cobra Kai? I keep seeing it around tumblr but idk what it is. So tell me why it's so great and I should watch it (because I love hearing people talk about/promote stuff they love)!

Ooh thank you for asking!! 

Cobra Kai is a TV series that started on YouTube Red in 2018 and is now on Netflix. It’s based on the Karate Kid movies that came out in the mid-80s. It includes the same actors that played the main characters in the original movies, which is a lot of fun for those of us who grew up with them (and actually, I think every single character from the original movies that has been in Cobra Kai has been played by the original actor). You don’t have to have seen the movies to enjoy it - they do a really good job of exposition and including clips from the movies directly into the show so that you can follow it without any prior knowledge of the story. 

Basically the story picks up 35-ish years after The Karate Kid and follows the two main rivals from that movie, Johnny Lawrence and Daniel Larusso. Where the Karate Kid movies mainly focused on Daniel, Cobra Kai favors Johnny a little more as a main character. We get to see where they are now, and learn about their jobs and families and how their adult lives contrast with their teenage lives. And then! We get back into the karate thing and meet a lot of new characters, and we get to explore the complicated and ever-changing relationships between friends and rivals, parents and children, and students and teachers. I think my favorite thing in Cobra Kai is how complex the relationships are.

We also get to explore the backstories of a lot of the characters, through the flashbacks from the movies but also original flashbacks for the series, and see how the characters got to be the way they are now and why they make the choices that they do and how those choices affect everyone else around them. And why they keep making those same choices even when they seem so obviously bad. There’s a good exploration of trauma and identity and family dynamics and good vs bad, right vs wrong.

Overall, the show has a lot of heart and humor and (for the most part) well-developed characters. There are certain scenes where I have to suspend my disbelief a little bit, and it has its problems like any show, but honestly, I had no interest in seeing it at all even though I love the Karate Kid movies, and then my husband was binge watching it while I was in the room and I got hooked and I’ve watched the whole thing through several times now.

(Cobra Kai, by the way, is the name of a karate studio where Johnny trains as a teen, and which he later resurrects as an adult.)

Season 3 was just released on January 1st on Neflix, so that’s why it’s kind of exploding a little bit right now, I think! And each season is only 10 half-hour episodes, so it’s pretty easy to binge-watch. I highly recommend it!

Ooh, thank you!  Time for some Emily Axford Appreciation (it’s always time for Emily Axford Appreciation, let’s be honest)

favorite thing about them

She is so masterfully sympathetic and yet frightening as a character at the same time!  Like, Emily Axford is a queen among queens, Saccharina is a character that I sympathized with immediately because OUCH, she’s experienced so many terrible things and she keeps putting a brave face on while being so vulnerable underneath.  At the same time, she’s also complex and flawed, and I love that!  I love that she can be extreme sometimes, and vengeful, and cold, and I love that we can know where she’s coming from and still sympathize with her at the same time.  Just, what a beautiful, complex character, and what an amazing performance, we’re bow down to Emily Axford, she simply is the chaotic Lawful Queen of D&D.

least favorite thing about them

I’m really interested in the two levels of cleric she has, given Saccharina’s complicated relationship with faith, and I wish there had been more explanation in-game for that mechanic.  Does her faith come from belief in the spirits?  Dairy Island spirits or Candian spirits?  What does she believe in?

Saccharina isn’t a fluent reader.  She has enough literacy to read and write simple things, and Gooey will cover for her when she needs it, but she’s not a big scholar.  She’s really good at oral learning instead, and can recite anything she’s learned by ear.

unpopular opinion

I don’t know if it’s unpopular, but I actually don’t want Saccharina to continue leading the battle against the Church.  I think she’s done a very good job starting it, showing people that the Bulb is not all powerful and that it is flawed and can be challenged, but I don’t want the rest of her life to be spent fighting the Church.  I want other people to take up the mantle (the Meatlanders seem pretty enthusiastic) and Saccharina can support them, but I think she’s carried this fight her whole life so far, and she’s only in her early 20s, and she should be able to explore what else is out there, her other interests, instead of having to fight all the time.

It's weird how much more I appreciate the first 2 seasons of Arrow now? Like coming from the smallville fandom, i wasn't too keen on dark arrow and only ended up binge watching when season 3 was half way done( it was very jarring to go straight from s1-2 to s3. Like I didnt understand what the hell happened?) Now, everytime I see any clip from s1-2 on yt,Im amazed at how mature the show was. In a good way. Also it frickin hurts listening to radioactive. Ooh the lost potential.

I love hearing about the reasons everyone loves S1 compared to S2. The amount of love there is for these first two seasons is appalling, and I love hearing the arguments for which one is better than the other - because to me, it just sounds like both seasons are just *that great*. Every now and then, I feel robbed of being there during the good days. I binged S1 and S2 on Netflix, after a good friend recommended it to me. I immediately fell in love with the concept of the story, the compelling stories, the trauma, the characters - and the emphasis on family and a “little more than complicated” relationship between Oliver and Laurel. The immediate characters I latched onto in the pilot was: Oliver and Laurel. They were so complex and the dynamics they had with Oliver was completely mesmerizing - because it was so complex, I always wondered: “How are they going to write this, how are these two characters going to find their way back together, and how do we deal with the damage that’s been done?” 

Honestly, the moment I meet Laurel and Oliver, I know that they are soul mates, I know they were meant to be and you can feel their souls revolve around one another and drift apart. I loved that, Oliver was Laurel’s first for everything, her only thing: Laurel’s only love. Oliver can’t help but find himself compelled to Laurel, her sense of being, who she is, and her complete hope in him when he has none - and it’s then that he realizes: she is his only love. We get that impression of them both, just in the pilot. It is amazing.

The writing was mature, addressing serious issues: addiction, death, family, drugs, and real villains.

It’s disappointing to see where the writing is now: 0licity.

There is absolutely no competition when it comes to S3 and S4 being the absolute shittiest, and no one knows which one is more shittier.

I've bee thinking. We'll probably get another bombshell that changes how we perceive everything. But she 234 has been making me think about Road's attachment to Allen. I didn't start taking her attachment pretty seriously until the Apocryphos reveal since before it just seemed like a game and get duty always come first. When you get right down to it all of Road's bonds have a burden for her to bear. She takes care of all the Noah, often playing various roles from daughter to caretaker. Whatever-

2 makes the other Noah happiest. No matter how close she is to any of them she still is on another level from them because of all the secret knowledge she has and even the private differing agendas she might be planning. She definitely keeps knowledge of the Noah from even her closest family like Tyki. Mana/the Earl was just a puppet to her initially and even now she has to tend to delicate state like a weary mother. Wisely is her only equal and confidante and he only recently showed up. For-

3 She remembers the full memory of losing everything to the Pillar. Then she lost all her Noah members when he brutally slaughtered them all. She was all alone bearing this weight of loneliness and hatred. Nearly all of Road's relationships are her giving and barely taking. Full of complicated and even ugly emotions. But Allen might be the one relationship that gives her peace. Yeah he's an exorcist that fights them. But Allen and her have a simple dynamic for her. He's never outright caused -

4 any grief like Neah or Mana has. Nor does he expect her to be some pillar of strength for him like the Noah do. She gets he wears a mask just like she does. Despite that they both end up showing very genuine feelings for others. Every feeling she has for him was a gradual choice she made for her own self. Loving him is possibly the easiest and most peaceful love she's ever experienced. He's kind yet very blunt with her. There's just something very real yet not obligatory there for her w/Allen-

5 This isn't meant to be a shipping thing about them. I just think whatever plans Road has and whether or not Allen gets screwed over by them doesn't change the fact Road's bond w/Allen is very different and ironically non painful compared to most of her other bonds. Idk I think loving him gave her some freedom within her own heart that she could act outside the script. Shoot for all we know these upcoming chaps will reveal Road also saw Red and will watch over him too just like Cross does.

Ooh i actually completely agree with everything you said!! and there’s very little i can add, i think you worded all of it pretty eloquently! 

Knowing how Road is the one who knows the most and who carries all that burden really puts a new spin on how she let herself be attached to Allen with time. I do agree, i think early on it was really just a game, but as time went she truly got attached to him.

You mention that she seemed serious once in front of Apocryphos but i wonder if she wasn’t even more so during the Alma arc, when Allen was losing himself in Kanda’s memories, it’s probably the only time she had to actually anchor him back to reality (”you are Allen, remember”). I think it’s pretty amazing that Road, out of all of the characters, had been specifically the one to get Allen to hold on to his identity, especially in the Alma arc where the Noah in general wanted him to give in to the 14th and the Order wanted him to be on their sides. 

I think Road indeed finds  alot of comfort with his existance - and we come a very long way from how they met and how they re-met again in the Ark. Which is a fascinating dynamic they share.

And yeah, i agree entierely with everything you say. She definitly allows herself others behaviors around him and clearly had shown more honest emotions around him when she could. I think it’s very sweet.

And yeah, now i wonder how much she will be around in Allen’s flashbacks - how much she had seen of Allen as a kid, how long had she been curious about him. 

This chapter really highlighted Road’s pain specifically and how much she remembers... and that realy brings out how she behaves with others and specifically with Allen
