all of the vegapunks speak quite distinctly, and from what i’ve seen, they all use different personal pronouns with different levels of formality! going in order from what we’ve seen so far:

1: shaka speaks quite formally (for a man, which i’m loosely assuming he is)- he uses watashi as his personal pronoun, which places him in a neutral/formal spot, and uses kimi to address the strawhats (which is somewhat diminuitive/maybe a little condescending) but omae to address dragon (conclusion: ???).

2: lilith speaks like a stereotypical old man- she uses washi as her personal pronoun and the masculine omae as her ‘you’ pronoun, and tends to use ja as her sentence-ending copula instead of da.

3: edison speaks kansai-ben (though i don’t know enough to say if it’s a specific subdialect)- he self-references with wai, which is a dialectal variant of the washi pronoun that lilith uses, and ends his sentences with ya in place of the regular da.

4: pythagoras is, from what we’ve seen so far, the most polite of the satellites- he’s the only one to consistently use polite verb forms.

5: atlas speaks probably the most aggressively, which suits her general demeanor but is very incongruous with her actual appearance- she uses the masculine ore for her first-person pronoun and omae for ‘you.’

6: haven’t really seen york speak yet besides, like, noises.

One Piece Chapter 1125 - Initial Thoughts

A week break gone and now we're back again

It always takes so long but we return to One Piece. Elbaf is on the horizon, and while questions float over Vegapunk there may still yet be a little more before we reach the land of giants.

Let's see what we have

Yamato's latest pit stop is the still-rebuilding Oden castle

Minatomo the carpenter has gone missing, so I guess that's the next step - probably missing his student who happens to actually be very skilled at carpentry

The WG continue to wrap things up on Egghead, ready to load the Seraphim and leave, we don't know what they intended for the Mark IIIs and the Weaponized Sea Beasts though

Lucci and Kaku board with angered faces, claiming Stussy was KIA

Unusual for Lucci to lie about that though isn't it?

Saturn though wraps up the benefits of the operation, citing that getting York and the Mother Flame is a win, but there was one critical hiccup

The Vice Admirals are in audience with him, and apologize for failing to capture Bonney and the Straw Hats even with a Grand Buster Call

They ask to make chase to Elbaf, but are turned down

The true hiccup was Vegapunk's message getting out

He also mentions that the awakening of Emeth was ironic

We get a flashback 200 years ago, turns out Emeth being studied on was by Saturn's permission! He wanted the tech for military might

Man literally left a 200 year chekhov's gun on the table

As Saturn mulls about Emeth, Vice Admiral Doberman makes a foolish mistake, and asks if that means Vegapunk's message was true

And thus he gets eyeshotted, though he seems to just be KO'd, since they call a medic

Something's happening in the Labophase though

York sees a ton of clouds in the lab, and realises that a plan has been undertaken

Edison's not dead! But York is trying to rectify that

But it's a feint, and as York fires to the side the top half of the egg floats away

Punk Records has been swiped from the clutches of the WG

Back at Marejois and naturally, the Celestial Dragons are not taking the low food supplies well

Sadly that means lots of killing and blaming

Akainu catching a stray for not capturing Kuma, but it seems that most of the Dragons were unaware of Vegapunk's reveal

Figarland Garling approaches the remaining Gorosei in their usual place

He has new orders: York is under his command now, because he's the new Minister of War

Saturn fucked up and now he just got demoted! That really ruins the planet motif

Oh but what of Saturn? He screams in agony on his ship

Looks like Imu has no use for him, and the black haze that seemed to restore them from damage now suffocates him

The Vice Admirals just look in horror, unknown to what's causing this

The seemingly impervious Saturn retches and grows thinner, almost hollowed out

Imu tells him their motives; Joy Boy was allowed to escape, so they are responsible

Black smoke and flames erupt from the ship, and what remains of Jaygarcia Saturn is just bones

Back at the now floating Punk Records, it seems the satellites are all alive, chatting among each other

Shaka notes they intended to get the whole Fabriostratum, but they're glad to get Punk Records out of York's hands

Pythagoras notes that she can still link up with Punk Records, but it'll only to be to fulfill its original intention

Shaka predicts it'll still take 500 years to achieve its true objective

But everyone thinks they're dead so there's limited pursuit, but that also means no funds

Edison has a new body, a frankenbody of spare parts

His own head, Atlas and Pythagoras' arm, and Shaka's torso and legs

Shaka also jabs at Edison for always admiring his height

Atlas however wants York's spare parts thrown out, which the rest of the group agree on

It is very fortunate Sanji never found this room of spare body parts

Edison also has another connection up his sleeve, and calls Weatheria!

Over to the Revolutionary Army and they are gathering the intel from Vegapunk's message

They also conclude that whoever gets the One Piece gets access to the power to destroy the world too

Belo Betty seems like she is ready to oppose the pirates, and in turn Luffy and Robin

Sabo doesn't comment, only noting that it explains why the first Celestrial Dragons took up home on the Red Line

Oh! Tequila Wolf wasn't the only one...Vodka Wolf, Rum Wolf and Bourbon Wolf

We know there's a Vodka kingdom since that's where Kaido came from, wonder if that's a connection

Dragon mulls on the coast, noting how many will take Vegapunk's message to scramble for higher land

Looks like Dragon's got a boot up the ass, to speed up his plan

Well this is interesting

The power structure has changed, Figarland Garling is our new Gorosei, Saturn is no more. A brutal death to a seemingly unkillable being at the hands of Imu, but the interesting part is what it tells and what it implies. Saturn was a person, and it seems that Imu was able to keep him alive for so long, at least 200 years. Does that mean there were other Gorosei back in the day? And does the Gyuki transformation transfer over to Garling? Will he be empowered with a new shape? The World Government may still have York and the Mother Flame, but the loss of Punk Records is huge! I guess that's what Lilith meant by them not being dead, I guess they all still can connect to one satellite and share the body. The frankenbody is unusual, though I wonder if they'll come back in a different shape next time, following refinement for convenience given how weird their proportions are right now. Interesting not to hear the Stella talk either, I guess he could still be the brain jar but maybe he is the sole casualty?

The Celestial Dragons starving may've killed a Gorosei but it will lead to more violence and blaming, not gonna be good for the current climate, which is probably why Imu anticipates war. Imu is definitely paying attention to Luffy now, calling them Joy Boy, but Saturn did in a way cause all his own undoing, from Emeth, Kuma and Vegapunk himself, he underestimated everyone because they were insects to him and they all outwitted him, an ant bite can still kill a man.

The Revolutionary Army look to gear up for something big. They have been making smaller strides in general but maybe now Oda's gonna put them to work. I do kinda hope though that they don't directly oppose Luffy like Koby intends to, Sabo that is your brother and all the RA have friendly ties to Robin. Everyone is like 'this power is dangerous and can destroy the world' but nobody's reminding themselves that Luffy ain't about destroying the world. Like, maybe just help pave the way? The Grand Fleet need to be kicked into gear to help with that too.

All in all a lot to consume and chew on with this chapter, especially compared to the linear brevity of the last. I doubt we'll go to Elbaf next chapter though, we have the dangling thread of Kuma and Bonney still to deal with, and of course whatever game-changing thing is about to happen on the other sides of the world.

Okay so rob Lucci is a fucking narc and we all knew it, it's like he forgot that he's also gonna be killed by the WG for failing and ASSISTING the straw hats

Kaku might turn ngl, I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't, but he clearly holds logic over a grudge. He might realize that he's gonna be killed anyway and decide to turn from CP0 just like Stussy

Shaka and Pythagoras dead? I bet Shaka is gonna make one more appearance as a final sacrifice to make sure everyone makes it off the island. As for the rest of the satellites:

- Pythagoras: you might be missed

- Edison: might not make it out let's be real

- Lilith: might be the last of them to die trying to get the Sunny to safety

- Atlas: could sacrifice herself in a fight

- York: fuck her I hope she dies but because she's an antagonist she might make it out alive

The only one I think is gonna live is Stella, as he should, and maybe York. I think Sentomaru might be put in jail??? I don't know what to make of him yet. I don't know what Stussy will do afterwards, she could really go in any direction.

We're definitely going to Elbaf next so USOPP AND ROBIN CHARACTER ARCS!!! I don't care how you feel about Saul still being alive, the reuniting scene of him and Robin is gonna be amazing in both the manga and anime.

Stella said that strong emotions are passed on as part of the lineage factor during cloning. What does this mean for all the pacifista, the Germa clones, the artificial devil fruits, etc? The most obvious answer is that Dr. Sprat is a reincarnation of Pythagoras especially considering the episode has a significant focus on reincarnation. This also pushes the idea that he is the ultimate mastermind behind everything even more. For instance, where could Elmer Walter Williams be getting the Phorgedytol supply? Who are the "fine folks" he always mentions? It would make sense if one of the smartest people in darn history is able to create a medicine that degrades your memory. Do you think he could be using the Phorgedytol to slowly take over the world and reassemble his cult?

For some less obvious threads:

Pythagoras sending one of his triangles to Purgatory isn't as nonsensical as you may think. For starters, cult leaders have a long history of killing their followers with the promise of a glorious afterlife which is exactly what Dr. Sprat did. Moreover, this could be a ploy to get the Triangle to indoctrinate the puppets in Purgatory and recruit more members in his cult.

Where did Estranged Producer Shane Madej go after he left the headquarters? His musing of death being at his doorway and warning of ominous forces plaguing the place may indicate he died on his way to the carriage. In that same episode, Pythagoras was alleged to be a murderer of one of his followers. Could Dr. Sprat be behind the murder?

The Professor mentioned that Pythagoras would probably be a coder had he been alive today. Could this imply the Substitute and Dr. Sprat working together, allowing the Substitute to go back and enact his revenge?

There was another type of person who used mathematics at the time: people who regarded mathematics as a field in which all possibilities should be explored. Today, these would be called researchers, but in Edo-period Japan, they probably regarded mathematics more as an art form.

As in many other art forms (Hiroshige's Okazaki from The 53 Stations of the Tôkaidô series as an example), wasan mathematics organised into schools with masters and apprentices. This would have consequences on how mathematics advanced during this time, but besides that, wasan schools were on the look-out for promising talents. In this light, sangaku appear as an illustration of particular school's abilities with solved or unsolved problems to bait potential recruits, who would prove their worth by presenting their solutions.

oh i meant it's really charming that vegapunk (smartest and supposedly most enlightened mind in the world) split himself into six parts of varying gender presentations. feminine (york, atlas, lilith) and masculine (shaka, pythagoras, edison), but the masculine representations are two robots and a guy in a daft punk helmet which hints to a level of depersonalization, but the girls are all pretty humanoid-looking. the obvious answer is that oda would rather draw cute girls and interesting robot guys, and there's a point to be made about how he assigned 'evil' and 'greed' and 'violence' to the feminine aspects and 'wisdom' 'thinking' and 'goodness' to the masculine aspects...

but above that point is that all of the satellites represent vegapunk equally. he is as much a cute gluttonous girl as he is a well-intentioned french synth-pop musician (sorry sorry i'll stop). so there's a continuing theme of the most enlightened and forward-thinking minds in one piece not being particularly concerned with gender, gender roles and identity, but rather in liberation from the rigid constraints of bioessentialism.

but even with relatively enlightened views and good intentions, vegapunk is also a flawed (SO flawed) and imperfect character who's made a lot of mistakes, caused a lot of harm, and yet has also helped many. and to have such an impactful character casually be like 'sup, i'm a cute girl!' in their first appearance was a lot of fun. i lost my mind when lilith first appeared and declared herself vegapunk and the fandom kinda just went... word, okay! and came up with a million reasons why someone we all thought was a dude was suddenly a girl.

it really makes me confused when people try to call oda a transphobe for how he represents trans characters in OP when he's always felt like one of the loudest people saying that you can be who and whatever you want, even (and especially) if what you want to be is a different gender lmao

One Piece Chapter 1023 - Initial Thoughts

And we are back again

Snuck us with a break last week given it was Obon in Japan but this time we get the chapter.

Gorosei: Gone, Joy Boy: Insane Haki, Imu: Shooketh And on our way out of Egghead

Let's see what comes next

Back (again) with the Yamato cover story but it continues to stagnate, it's a cute enough cover of Yamato, Denjiro and the kids throwing rocks at him eating oden but it is still a very slow narrative

Emeth's unknotting of joy Boy's conqueror's haki has left quite the impression, everyone from the navy has been KO'd including the vice admirals!

Interestingly the Seraphim are unaffected, since S-Snake tries to awaken a marine about the Straw Hats escaping

I wonder if they simply have stronger spirits or maybe they're unaffected by imposing will since they're not entirely organic?

Dorry and Brogy mention how the haki is even more powerful than Shanks, which you would expect from Joy Boy

Luffy thanks Emeth for the help, but our Iron Giant has gone silent once more

I would've given a lot for Emeth to have given Luffy one last thumbs up

With everyone safe and no enemy in pursuit, the Sunny and Giants' longboat set their sights on Elbaf

Luffy wrinkles out while Bonney seems to sleep beside Kuma, while Usopp gets to reunite with his giant masters (also Chopper gets to meet them for the first time)

Sanji however chats with Vegapunk's corpse

Like dude I know you have questions about what he was saying but, he's dead, there's no speak with the dead here...unless...Brook you got something like that?

And so we get context for the title 'the two week void', I thought it would be media silencing the event but in fact it's events that happened 2 weeks before Egghead

Vegapunk, Shaka and Pythagoras all caught on that someone stole some of the Mother Flame, meaning they knew there was a traitor among them!

Interesting that despite their rivalry, it's the Stella who suspects Lilith immediately, not Shaka, who points out that only the three here have alibis

Like it seems Stella was set on it being Lilith, likely because 'evil' but like, greed is right there man!

They go into 'stealth mode' to make sure the others aren't privy to their data either

It's kinda tragic since Shaka and Pythagoras will die by York's machinations anyway, while Edison and Atlas died by self sacrifice

Pythagoras is the one who identifies York as the culprit a week later, to Shaka and Stella's surprise

Oh that is sloppy York, fake memories, hidden transponder snails, tampering with security feeds, sloppy sloppy

Stella at least apologizes out loud for suspecting Lilith

Shaka also finds evidence of Sea Beast Weapons being deployed without permission, likely on the CP agents

Stella confirms the deceit by replaying the Den Den Mushi's jamming feed, hearing York contact Marejois about him studying the Void Century

1 day later Lulusia happens, and the Stella is furious

Ah so York used one of the weaponized sea beasts to deliver the Mother Flame, that is pretty clever I must admit

With Pythagoras studying the sea levels to confirm the Mother Flame's use, furthering theories that the WG have an Ancient Weapon, Vegapunk laments his role in the destruction

'Only a fool lets their greed run amok, and I personified mine!' - Egghead has had no shortage of badass lines

Stella now begins his countermeasures; there's no point in arresting York right now, she has the WG behind her and motive is uncertain. Shaka offers to run but Vegapunk says to focus on civilians instead, since the WG would chase him to the ends of the earth anyway

Thinking about Ohara, he notes that they have better technology, they will be able to spread their voice farther than Ohara did

Mulling over what the WG is, and how his pursuit for answers leads to more mystery (oh Oda, we know that feeling) Vegapunk states how he'll willingly forfeit his life

And Shaka the Good and Pythagoras the Wise also share that sentiment

Though they do wonder - with head in a jar that is Punk Records in panel - what classes as death for them, since they are still technically androids with good wifi

Vegapunk also notes to prioritize the Cloud Loft device, since making island clouds may be the only thing that'll save people from the seemingly inevitable deluge

York meets up with Stella by the sleeping giant, asking what he's doing. Vegapunk plays coy though, talking about simply furthering the perfection of the Mother Flame

While he's actually sneaking the projector Den Den Mushi into Emeth

2 Days before present, the transmission feed is recorded

The three discuss how the feed will start on the event of their death, but there's still one last countermeasure: erasing their memories!

They cannot let York catch onto their plan, so the shock, the deceit, and the fear was all still real

They have to trust their plan though, even in defeat there will still be victory

As they awaken mind wiped, Stella sees some documents in his handwriting explaining some events

2 weeks of memories have been wiped, they have done it on their own volition, oh btw the government knows about your secret research

Talking about having to experience all the bombshells again like it isn't just one bombshell after another; the WG know, you have to let yourself die, oh and a Yonko and Bonney have just landed here, CP0 are coming to assassinate you, a buster call is coming, Kizaru is there bringing a Gorosei with him

Each one met with the same EHHHHH reaction too XD

Honestly if I were Stella I would be sitting down after all of that, just lie down for another hour

I wonder if that means Shaka contacted Dragon before the memory wipe too?

Further ahead in time we see Stella talking to Sanji while in the pod as they were going down to save Bonney from Saturn

He tells Sanji to let him die, noting how it feels like something else will be put in motion when it does

Sanji though didn't want to entertain that, I bet people will try and absolve him like 'VP wanted to die so it's not Sanji's fault that Kizaru got to him' but nah, he still promised Bonney after this conversation that he'd save Vegapunk and he died

'One more thing, about the One Piece: I want you guys to find it'

One last stamp of approval from Vegapunk

Back in the present Usopp celebrates with the Giants, setting their sights on Elbaf

Luffy's also there but he's too haggard to be festive, so he wants to delay it a bit so he can join in XD

This does feel like it's the end for Egghead. Well at least for the VP and Straw Hats' side.

I still think CP0, York, and the Gorosei have some stuff left to deal with here, plus Lilith is gonna have to wake up and learn about what happened. So I think we're in that lull between arcs, setting up one while wrapping up the other.

Still I really enjoyed the sci-fi nature of this chapter, York's plan was known, but memories had to be erased - which was already established from Kuma's backstory so it's believable that VP refined it some more - so that York didn't know that they knew because what they knew they now don't know XD But it does establish all the 'big brain activity' that led to Vegapunk's final victory. I'm glad to see smart characters being smart too.

But Lilith accusations were uncalled for (they were called for but we like Lilith so it's uncalled for XD).

Egghead has been a spectacular start to the final saga, and knowing Oda this is probably only the beginning, Elbaf is finally on the horizon and the Straw Hat Pirates have overcome their first major trial as a Yonko crew.

But there still lies the fallout of what comes next.
