FYI, the UK's Online Safety Act has just passed.
I wouldn't have realised if not for the email from the Open Rights Group. Here's their statement:

No one disputes that tech companies could do more to keep children safe online, but the Online Safety Bill is an overblown legislative mess that could seriously harm our security by removing privacy from internet users. The law will also damage the freedom of expression of many people in the UK.
While the UK government has admitted itâs not possible to safely scan all of our private messages, it has just granted Ofcom the powers to force tech companies to do so in the future. These are powers more suited to an authoritarian regime, not a democracy. They could harm journalists and whistle-blowers, as well as parents, domestic violence victims and children who want to keep their communications secure from online predators and stalkers.
The Bill also poses a huge threat to freedom of expression, with tech companies expected to decide what is and isnât legal and then censor content before itâs even been published. This re-introduces prior restraint censorship for the written word back into UK law for the first time since the 1600s. In addition, young people, whom the law is supposed to protect, could be denied access to large swathes of the web, including resources that provide them with information and support.
Perhaps the biggest failure has been the lack of detail on how these extraordinary powers will be implemented. Itâs down to Ofcom to sort this mess. In practice, they will struggle to successfully implement large parts of the law. We believe a fundamentally different approach is likely to be needed.

Our six priorities for digital rights
Open Rights Group is calling on the next government to focus on the following six priorities for digital rights:
1. Protect our right to send secure messages
Everyone â including children and young people â should have the right to use end-to-end encryption to ensure that our communications are safe, secure and private. The next government should protect not undermine encryption.
2. Provide migrants with digital sanctuary
Migrants, refugees and asylum seekers need the same data and privacy rights as everyone else so that they can keep their digital identity and information safe. The next government should commit to ending the digital hostile environment.
3. Ban the use of pre-crime AI by the police
Predictive policing systems that use artificial intelligence (AI) to âpredictâ criminal behaviour undermine our right to be presumed innocent and exacerbate discrimination and inequality in our criminal justice system. The next government should ban dangerous uses of AI in policing.
4. Defend our right to freedom of expression online
Freedom of expression online is being undermined by age verification, content takedowns, social media censorship and unfair copyright claims. The next government should commit to protecting our right to freedom of expression online.
5. Strengthen our data protection rights
We need strong data protection laws to make sure that governments and companies do not use our data to track, surveil and profit from us. The next government should strengthen our data protection rights and make sure that the data protection watchdog is fit for purpose.
6. End intrusive tracking by online advertisers
Advertising companies track our internet use to build detailed profiles so they can target us with adverts. The next government should restrict intrusive tracking by data brokers and online advertisers.

"Publishers accused the nonprofit of infringing copyrights in 127 books from authors like Malcolm Gladwell, C.S. Lewis, Toni Morrison, J.D. Salinger and Elie Wiesel, by making the books freely available through its Free Digital Library.
The archive, which hosts more than 3.2 million copies of copyrighted books on its website, contended that the library was transformative because it made lending more convenient and served the public interest by promoting "access to knowledge.""

"but hamas is getting funded by extremist islamic hate groups!" do you think the U.S. government and military giving funding for israeli's war efforts against palestinians is a morally neutral and inherently righteous body that had no influence in the politics of southwest asia as a global colonial superpower. do you really think anything you can say about the people resisting oppression can't be said about the oppressors.
#brieuc.txt#palestine#this isnt me justifying it but it is me pointing out the double standard how hamas' funding is antithetical to the freedom movement#but the u.s.' influence and financial support is completely fine and doesnt need to be brought up at all#''hamas doesnt have the best interests of palestinian people'' may be true but the alternative is not allowing an apartheid state to exist#also its a ridiculous thing to say because thats a common thing in most countries#neo-nazi groups r a major problem in the Ukraine military but nobody questions ukraine's right for freedom.#the double standards keep on piling up#im not saying you cant criticise these groups but is it criticism or is it propaganda#are you talking abt how war radicalises and changes n traumatises people or are you implying every palestinian is a dirty terrorist#etc#and do you understand that in an active war zone n worlds largest open air prison violence is guaranteed and is brutal.#or do you think that if the people with no electricity and water just Werent So Stubborn And Talked everything would be okay?#and do you consider white people fighting for freedom martyrs but brown people doing the same terrorists

Season 4 hope/prediction: Deb's show is solid, zero issues, runs flawlessly with great ratings, but her personal life is completely eroding. We start with her discovering Marcus is leaving, and it culminates in DJ going into labor right before a taping. Deb chooses the show. When it's over, and she finally flies to Vegas, it's too late -- Aiden's not letting her in because he loves his wife too much to let DJ get into a shouting match with her mom right after giving birth, and instead takes the brunt of Deb's wrath, with her making excuses and talking about how they used her money for IVF, and anyway, DJ's fine, so who cares if she wasn't there? Kathy's in the room with DJ and the baby (DJ's the closest she has to a daughter, after all) and Deb leaves too furious to think about how badly she's hurt her family.
She heads back to her Vegas mansion -- empty, obviously, Josefina and the dogs would be in LA -- and pops open a bottle of wine. Alone. Completely alone. Can't call Marty, she has no friends, the closest she's got would be Kiki and wouldn't that be embarrassing, calling your poker dealer to talk about your feelings --
and then Ava's there. She got the news about DJ's labor, she got the story from Aiden (who was distraught, by the way, man's too much of a sweetheart for Vance drama), a spare key from Damian (happy to pawn that off on her, though if it isn't returned promptly he's taking legal action) and has arrived just in time to see the Deborah Vance having a breakdown the likes of which no one thought physically possible. Crying gives you wrinkles, you know. But Ava has to be here. She's the physical embodiment of a lesson Deb never truly learned: you don't have to like someone to love them.
In my imaginary fantasy land that I am concocting this would then subsequently lead into them fucking nasty but I understand that this may be a step too far for the surprisingly large number of very normal people who watch this show and would forgive JPL for not taking it that far. However I do believe they should fuck about it and let Ava take the reigns in their relationship while they see how many of Deb's bridges they can un-burn.
#hacks hbo#ava x deborah#avorah#avadeb#hey if anyone wants to bother writing this for real go for it I don't care#if any of this is any degree of accurate for JPL's vision of s4 then I will be extremely happy#deb is NOT miranda priestly#miranda knew from the start that she could never have human connection or she'd lose her dream job#deb has inspired such genuine devotion that she does not understand that a woman in a man's role historically requires sacrifice#she knew the fire cost her the show but she didn't KNOW that that was the only reason until now#that the network did not give a shit at all#the advertisers did and the advertisers are the true enemy#she still believes she got to the top through hard work and talent#wrong the deborah vance brand was built by people who love her and believe in her#only when she has lost DJ will she be open to hearing the truth (that it was a group effort)#from the mouth of the one person who stood by her out of a wombo combo of love and spite#only THEN will she accept that kathy was right#THIS is why frank left her. THIS behavior. the belief that SHE is a special queen who did it all alone#frank was scum by the way dude groomed her little sister#his behavior is fucked but his reason is close enough to correct that ava can use it as an example of how much deb HAS to change#btw please please please we need deb sleeping with ava and not calling it a mistake because she's too fucking tired and sad

Damon keeps being shown with a red apple in both a lot of the promotional material as well as the opening intro, which feels very intentional considering the way this game takes a LOT of inspiration from the bible. The red apple represents temptation, in case the temptation of committing a murder to escape alive. Eva, just like Eve, was the first to bite the apple. And after her, her only other companion followed suit.
Damon's animal motif is the snake. Manipulative. Conniving. Untrustworthy. A traiter and a deceiver. Motivated by self interest. He's the snake, the root cause of the reason humanity was banned from paradise. He's constantly depicted holding the apple, never biting into it, as if still contemplating about whether to give in to the temptation of it all.
My biggest prediction for Damon is that he'll be the last murderer. That he'll perform the final kill and escape at the expense of all of them, the very way he accused them all of being predestined to do from the start.
#project eden's garden#p:eg#p:eg spoilers#damon maitsu#i feel like what solidified this theory for me were finally knowing the lyrics for the opening intro#the repetition on âthe last killsâ while the focus was on damon feels... purposeful#âall things wound... the last killsâ#he's shown alone in the trial grounds. he's continuously shown with the red apple. like goddamn the mf is a freaking snake#he's so culprit coded it's insane#god can you imagine he kills someone and gets away with it by framing diana? repeating the actions that scarred them both in chapter 1?#abusing the group's trust to save himself. being a wolf in sheep's clothing the way he thought wolfgang was? the hypocrisy is tasty af#i'm so conflicted on this cuz on one hand this would be absolutely unique and phenomenal like a protag being the killer and winning???#on the other hand that would mean grace dying and i genuinely need that girl to make it out alive i swear to god#same with diana and toshiko. i don't have as much hope for them unfortunately but geez if someone deserves to survive it's them#idk if it's already been said but since the trial have two routes i'm hoping they'll be at least two endings#one where damon redeems himself and makes it right by the group and one where he stays stuck in his ways and sacrifices them all cuz of it#momento rambles

To stab or not to stab?
Something that has been on my mind for a while nowâŠ
I see people being negative about others expressing their personal opinions regarding how the show unfolds and the actions of different characters. For example bringing up anything related to âmoralityâ or saying that âA person doing X,made them feel uncomfortable/sad/stressed/angry/anxious etc.Â
Itâs natural that our views wonât align with everyone elseâs and thatâs fine. What would be the point if everyone perceived things the same exact way?Â
Some people watch just for fun. Others like to engage on a deeper level ,exchange thoughts and make conversation. And neither is better than the other. Everyone decides how they want to consume and interact with the media.Â
Characters are not immune to having their decisions and actions questioned. And most of the time it isnât done out of hate for the character, itâs just following the plot line and reacting to it. Some people will feel strongly about some subjects, others wonât. And I donât think it serves anyone to tell people âWell simply donât watch if you donât get it.âÂ
There is nothing wrong with people voicing how they feel about it. If anything,it means that the show is good and the viewers are passionate enough to want to dig deep and question things. Agree, disagree, change their minds, get happy, sad, angry. I think that is good because it opens the door to conversations and sharing ideas.Â
Isnât that the whole point of engaging with the fandom? Telling people to not do, think, or say âX, Y, or Zâ does a great disservice to everyone.Â
I hope we all continue to enjoy yapping about the show and have a good time while at it. <3
#yellowjackets#this is meant to open up conversations between fans#it isnt about who is wrong or right#and it is by no means targeting any group

what do we think is the most low effort "observance" of "passover" i could do
#i'm so tired man. we still don't know if đž has a job or not. also everything else is happening#and our local grocery store only just started stocking challah again after weeks of just not carrying it so tbh im not even really feeling#any serious abstention from chametz. though i suppose i rarely am.#anyway right now i'm at ''make vegan matzo ball soup for đž and i and then do the most abbreviated two-people-one-jew seder possible''#but that might be..... TOO sad?????#i know like one jew well and he's busy flying back and forth across the country for his wife's job#and everyone else i know is thru union work meaning theyre attending a Leftist Seder which will have Themes#and involve some kind of nightmarish power struggle between the hanukkah-only jews who want to bring mac and cheese to the seder#and the two conservative or orthodox jews who will consider a potluck with food prepared in a non-kosher kitchen to be an act of#anti-semitic aggression.#and in fairness to them. absolutely none of it will have been prepared in a kosher kitchen. but they do also feel this way about music.#and this would all be bad enough but then i will also have to hear about the Themes from the least subtle least fun least interesting#haggadah ever poorly assembled by a group of really sincere people i like and also can't stand.#box opener#as always i hate a stirring slogan. i hate to listen to someone else explaining a cause i already agree with to me#i want a tight five on specific actionable plans to improve community efforts to protect protestors on visas#and then i want us to leek battle recite some shit and eat.

idk if it's because my mum worked in a tv magazine or what but all the media wars and backstabbing and stuff happening behind the cameras is so so interesting to me
#just saw what happened yesterday in la revuelta ojalĂĄ se muera el enano pelirrojo#so for non-spaniards here's a crash course on the situation (i could do a post about media groups in spain cause it's a lot)#there's this one late night show that's been on air for about 15 years called el hormiguero#it started fine (i used to watch it with my family when it started)#but soon there were some issues that people were seeing#especially concerning the presenter (who's also the head ofthe show) pablo motos#and his attitude with female guests he'd interview#basically being very weird and gross around them#apart from that in the last year he started to get very political in the show#he invited right and far right leaders while refusing to do so with the left wing#started making monologues at the beginning of each show critizising stuff the left had done or said#and finally included a debate segment in the show in which he invited liked-minded people to discuss politics#this has directly affected his audience. my dad is a fan of el hormoguero and i've seen him turn more right wing every year#so. last summer RTVE (national broadcast company) announced they were gonna do a late night show presented by david broncano#it's hard to describe everything here but basically broncano already had a late show called la resistencia in a streaming platform#it has always been very popular with young people and it is quite left wing#the new program made by RTVE was called la revuelta. it is exactly the same as la resistencia#before it started airing people were sceptic that broncano would be able to defeat motos' hegemony#BUT. ever since it started aiting in september it has consistently been getting more audience than el hormiguero#who would've known people were tired of the redhead bastard#anyways. apart from this. different celebrities on ppdcasts have been saying that in order to promote their product they are forced to go#to el hormiguero even of they didn't want to#there's also rumours of pablo motos blackmailing people (mostly comedians) who make fun of him#and now to what happened last night. i don't watch tv so i just saw it on twitter#broncano opened the show saying that they were sorty but they had no guest tonight#they had this one person but 30 minutes before shooting the people from el hormiguero had called him#he was originally going to go both to la revuelta and el hormiguero#but the guys from el hormiguero called him to tell him that if he went to la revuelta he couldn't go to el hormiguero#el hormiguero is bigger than la revuelta so. he had to cancel#broncano went on to say this had happened before and that's why he was talking about it

Tonightâs anecdote from the knitting circle:
When one of the ladies, Ruth, was a girl, mid-Michigan had a really bad tornado season. One day a raven turned up on her family's back porch and, as a joke, her mother opened the door and said, âWell, Jimmy, are you coming in or what?â
And the raven came inside.
He proceeded to make himself at home. He had a favorite perch on one of the armchairs and would clean his claws on the fabric. They fed him outside in an old enclosed dog kennel. He was evidently well-mannered and didn't disrupt the household at all. He simply strutted around like he owned the place and that was that.
Near as they could guess, the storms had disoriented him and he'd made himself welcome at the first friendly house he found.
But word eventually got around about the family who'd been adopted by a raven. A few months later, while Ruth and Jimmy were chilling outside, a car pulled up in front of the house. A man opened the door and called, "Hey, Pete! Come on, let's go home!"
Jimmy (or Pete) hopped on into the car and it drove away.
#this knitting group has been the highlight of my year I tell you#the STORIES#it was a small group tonight with one new lady who must be in her 90âs tho she doesnât look or sound it#she was married twice#her first husband left her after about 20 years because he wanted a younger woman#she met her second husband at a âparents without partnersâ meeting and they got married in Hawaii#theyâve been married at least 50 years#she was telling us stories about helping her mother with knitting during WWII#Ruth was late and somewhat breathlessly greeted Jane#then as soon as she caught Jane's name she cried 'Dick and Jane! Cripe I learned to read with Dick and Jane!#do kids still read those in school?'#Ruth opens about half of her stories with âwell cripe!â#sheâs an amazing storyteller and sheâs had one of those quietly exciting lives where everything is an Event#the only other one there tonight was the 20-something girl who's majoring in psychology#I know this will sound uncharitable but I'm not sure it's the right field for her...#mine#hmmm maybe I need a knitting group tag#(also with how much I refer to it exclusively as the knitting group I really need to learn knitting)#(Ruth liked my sweater! I'll have to remember to bring it when it's finished)
