I'm so emotional about the thousands of years of work humanity has put into plant domestication and breeding, and I'm also so emotional about all the important work that's still being done today! With the rise of monocultures, most people don't know about the sheer breadth of varieties that exist for different food crops; there's such a focus on the cultivars most suited to industrial growth, harvesting, and shipping, which leads to valuing things like uniform growth and maturation times and the ability to be shipped long distances most highly, often to the detriment of flavor and genetic diversity.

But all these specialized varieties DO exist, and more are being developed every year! There are organizations like the Seed Savers Exchange that are dedicated to the preservation of historic heirloom cultivars that might otherwise have been lost, sometimes reintroducing a variety because a single family or individual happened to have maintained the seed. And there are people, ranging from large-scale agricultural University breeding projects to backyard gardeners, who are creating new varieties—new colors and flavors and textures, plants adapted to harsher weather or shorter growing seasons or with resistance to common pests!

If you're a gardener, it's absolutely worth it to look into what's being developed for your specific region. Even if you're not, buying local produce may let you try some more unique and locally-adapted varieties!

And if you save seeds, you can help develop your own varieties by selecting plants that have the features you like best and growing out the seed from those! You may not have the resources to trial many different plants (and probably can't do much with corn unless you have a whole field), but every time you intentionally save seed you are making a selection. The Experimental Farm Network sells a number of "grex" or "landrace" seed packets, where some traits have been selected for but there is still a great deal of genetic diversity and each plant will be slightly different. You can keep letting them intermix, or you can choose your favorite plants and work on stabilizing your own variety! And then, because usually if you save seed you end up with much more than you can use yourself, you can share it with your friends! Join in the ancient human tradition and make new plants!

Is leverage redemption worth watching? I love Leverage but idk if i could enjoy the show if hardison isn't in most episodes or if the reboot sells out in some way.

okay so I showed up to this ask like four months late with a smoothie so I'm sorry about that BUT

does redemption have it's flaws? yes, I will be the first to admit that!

however, as someone who deeply loves leverage, the characters and what the show stands for, I still can find myself enjoying redemption.

there's one post that's in my drafts talking about the differences between the og and redemption and the so-called universe physics (how logic works in both shows and how they are the same/differ) and there are definitely some differences. there are some really good posts comparing them in the tags and I'll try to tag them as watch redemption when they come up!

I'm going to be really honest right now and say that (no shade) I feel like redemption s1-2 were lacking because john rogers was not a main writer for them. devlin and the others are great and know their stuff, but redemption was missing some of the grit (balanced with everything else) that the original run had. redemption is more fun and lighthearted (where the og was still fun and had comedic elements but also had a more jaded perspective). I think part of that change is the absence of nate as a character and what he brought to the table, but the other part of that is very much the way the show is written overall

I have seen some criticism about parker being a caricature of what she was in the original run (ex: how she goes to a child's psychologist and uses puppets sometimes, is overtly weird, more loud about stuff, etc) BUT I will say that I think there's some nuance to that

I don't think the child psychiatrist thing is infantalizing- some methods of therapy work for people more than others and that is me speaking as someone who works in mental health. if play therapy and stuff like that work for you as an adult, good for you! whatever works for you is more than enough the overtly and loudly being weird thing I really do think can be taken either way. in the original run part of parker's character progression was that she was learning how to interact with people normally (or at least more efficiently), but her being more out about that now can be taken as she is more comfortable in her skin and acting like she wants because she is surrounded by people who love and support her. maybe she doesn't want to (or have to!) mask all the time and I don't see a problem with that

HOWEVER! there are certain criticisms that are related to her characterizations and overlaps with her autism and I don't want to speak over the autism community about those aspects and how they have manifested in her character in redemption so I'm leaving it there

as for the hardison being absent aspect- I was REALLY afraid of that at first BUT the loss isn't so deeply impactful when you have characters like breanna and harry added to the mix. I went in ambivalent about harry and excited to have breanna (a canon queer) joining the team, but I have come to love and cherish both of them dearly and wouldn't want to replace them or lose them as characters in this found family ensemble. I think the writers handled aldis' packed schedule really well and even though he isn't there in most episodes, his presence is still very much around. parker and eliot talk about him and reference him when he's gone. so do sophie and breanna, even harry. he isn't on the screen but the relationships he's formed with the other characters and the impact he's had on them is very evident.

there are some takes from users about whether or not the ot3 was queerbait, un-canoned, etc in redemption. I have a lot of thoughts about it and a lot of them are incomprehensible but what I can say is that I have renewed hopes for the progression and canon development of their relationship now that john rogers is back as the main writer for s3

In case ppl were curious about the open hardware, open software gay ipod. As you can see, next to other mp3 players.... It's massive. But the good thing is that it should be easy to repair, customize and replace parts all you want. Also, unlike the other players (which are old tech by now), it has Bluetooth which is great. But the setup took the longest time, because I was having issues with the microsd card I was using. It would crash in the middle of a song and get stuck in a boot loop until I took out the SD card. I had to set up a dev environment to get the debugger running to find out that I was having the same memory allocation issue as the others. So I followed the suggested fix of removing all the album art on all the files, and it seemed to work for a second before it crashed again. In my desperation, I reformatted the card to FAT32 so I can put it back into my sansa, but somehow??? it fixed the malloc issues?? (before it was exFAT) So I'm just keeping my eyes on it and trying to actually listen to songs, but now i'm noticing some user experience quirks.

ex) on rockboxed sansa if I select a file from the file browser, it plays the rest of the songs in the folder and even moves onto the next folder if I reach the end, but Tangara only loads up that single song into memory. You can go through the 'albums' menu and select to load the entire album but still, it only plays that the album and doesn't play any more than that. sometimes I just like going through my own file structure rather than the indexed database, so I wish there was a better experience there.

The scroll wheel is a bit finicky imo, even after I've adjusted the sensitivity it takes me SO many tries to get the dial to move up just one entry. Sometimes the small controlled movement I'm making to go up just one line registers as a long press, which makes the UI jump up a whole page. I think there are some feature requests that are asking for a "hybrid" approach of it acting like a button and a scroll wheel so we'll see where that goes!

Under the cut for the other mp3 players I have

Sansa fuze has a bad screen, I think I messed up the ribbon cable when I opened it up to clean. Just gotta go back in there and fix it again 😭. Also the mechanical wheel (which is a rubber coated plastic) is STICKY because the rubber disintegrated, so I really do have to open it up to disassemble everything to clean it out. But otherwise it sounds great, takes an SD card, compact and customizable enough.

The Ipod mini has a bad battery that I replaced but the rockbox + sleep state messed up the new battery and it won't hold a charge anymore so, I put in the original battery and reverted it back to the original software which SUCKS bc itunes (I think u can foobar2000 it actually, but haven't tried yet). I don't think rockbox and ipod mix very well in terms of sleep state which is so unfortunate because I love the feel of the hardware but hate the software.

The sansa clip+ is the first one I had and still is thee best, it just has the smallest battery of all of them :( rockbox works great and it has never let me down!

Wanted to say thank you for posting the truth about "Simon" - as horrible as it was to hear, I'm grateful. Getting confirmation from someone close to "Simon" that they weren't real, it was like a spell was broken. I liked the books and the content posted on Tumblr, even talking to Simon via chat sometimes, and maybe got obsessed with the idea of the character. While I never believed the whole story it was a fun fantasy that gave me some hope (and a distraction) in dark times. Now that I know the truth, I'm disgusted and so sad for the gentle readers who have been harmed by any of it, like you. Maybe I could have been one. Again, thank you for speaking your truth. I wasn’t sure if I should share things, but when I thought about how I wasn’t the first gentle reader they pulled this with, I realized I wouldn’t be the last either. They are building up social media presence in other places, and I don’t doubt they will misuse that social power. Thank you for letting me know it helped, that’s the whole reason I did it.

I felt very special, it really did feel like a dream come true. But fantasy like that is always better left to fiction. Every time my life felt story book, it was awful to live through. I noticed a pattern in my life of falling for tricks by similar people. If someone feels like your fictional crush come to life, they are probably just as fictional now, an act. I’m doing my best to heal now, and I have wonderful support. I’ve learned not rely on others for all of the novelty or safety in my life, it’s wonderful to have people that add that to your life, but if one person is your everything, they can take it away. It’s always best to have a diverse group of loved ones there to support you, not one wobbly pillar asking you to balance and act just right in return for holding you up. And it really is mind blowing how good life can be when you have that.

Sometimes I come across posts on here and I can't help but think - this should be published in a best selling book. It makes me sad that so many people are missing out on some of the absolute best stories, best poetry, best quotes, that I've certainly ever come across.

Like its sad to think that one day all this stuff might be lost. Tumblr is filled with so much creativity. Yeah sure its also got the pineapple post and the Gringe x Tony the Tiger post up there with some of the worst things you've ever seen (in an awful yet hilarious way). But the blackout poetry, the original tumblr stories, the God of Arepo... The fact this place has its own folklore and even its own form of language, the fact that several words of the year were born here (never gonna get the suffix -ussy out of my brain thanks tumblr). The collaborative shit posts with punchlines that hit you like a ton of bricks only if you've been on this site long enough to have understood every single one of the multiple layers of meme history and tumblr in-jokes that make it work.

It's just a great place and there is nowhere else on the internet like it. So yeah. It should be immortalised in a tangible form thats all I'm saying. I just think that would be neat.
