feel like I've asked this and thought about it before for language learning; but I'll ask again~~
is it worth it to try to play through a game where you're basically illiterate?
I need to up my study of hiragana/katakana so hopefully I can do this and actually get somewhere faster.
I'd hoped that by doing this and taking the time to try to dissect and figure out the text (using either flash cards or a table or something) that hopefully I could actually learn something from it~~
but both animal crossing and pokemon are such text heavy games, and I was on the switch lite when I tried it w animal crossing~~ the text was small as is and I couldn't tell what the furigana above the kanji even was. so I kind of gave up and switched back to English...
baby beginner of trying to learn Japanese, what's a way to make memorizing and learning hiragana/katakana fun and for me to actually memorize and learn them? I wanna get literate~~~ cause I feel kind of dumb~~~
would playing video games in the target language you're trying to learn help the beginner learner? or not? (I figure I'm still illiterate at this point so hope it would but idk if I'd just get frustrated at it or not)
or maybe second guessing myself here; maybe despite what I've been telling myself since high school, I really don't have the want to actually learn..... Or I do, I'm second guessing myself, and think that since I'm like 30, that I'll never learn....
idk....
I hoped that I was getting somewhere at least, given I can think sometimes in very rudimentary childish Japanese, but can't read, and can't understand much at all...
I'm still very much a baby learner and discouraged by this... but I'll never learn otherwise.....
got to stop giving up with things~~~ don't be discouraged by it, cause kids learn their native tongue in the same exact way~~~~
just throwing yourself in there~~~ yet I'm still disheartened by it....
hopefully on the OLED instead of the lite, the furigana on top of the kanji is easier for me to read~~~ if I try this again~~~
so~~ tldr; feel bad that I'm still a baby learner w Japanese and mainly illiterate... what's some fun ways (aside maybe picking apart video game text) to try to learn and memorize the characters? like really learn them by heart so I don't need to resort to a table ever again?
feeling like this should give me the determination to work harder~~~ to prove my "I can't do it" wrong~~~~ rather than just give up...

Here is something I believe very sincerely: You can understand why a character made a certain decision and feel love and compassion for them- and still agree wholeheartedly that their decision was a mistake and even morally WRONG. These things do not contradict each other. Love does not equal agreement.
You can also believe that a character made mistakes that resulted in certain consequences- without this meaning that you "hate" them! Still feel LOVE and compassion for them, understand where they're coming from, and want healing and better things for them. These things do not contradict each other. Criticism does not equal Hate.
And I believe this about real people too.

i know you said youre going to sleep but i need to get this idea written down and sent before i forget
*While most of the time when anyone talked to Declan, it'd either be out in public or at the other person's house, with some exceptions. Through the house rang an almost panicked-sounding knock, though it was a rather weak sound.*
-@2-stupid-aussies
(yippieeeee. Ik I'm currently late to college but idgaf)
"The fuck?"
*Usually if someone was going to knock on Declan's door, they'd have the curtesy to text him before, unless this was someone knocking for his dad or Aoife; neither of them being home at the minute. Still, he best answer the door in case it's something important.*

lrb i agree the iliad is one of the funniest books ive ever read but also their point abt background npcs having their entire backstory explained to us and then dying two pages later is like. the point is that those npcs are people who had lives and families and homes to get back to but because theyre dying in a war (that isnt even their own) they dont get to have those anymore. so no, i dont really think its fair to call those descriptions unnecessary. they add depth and tragedy to smaller characters that you wouldnt glance at twice otherwise

Rapunzel AU!
Cale has been inside of the tower for his entire life. His hair is long, much longer than his brother's. His brother doesn't have a name. Cale knows they're brothers though- because they both have red hair, even if Brother has short hair and Cale does not.
Ever since Cale was 12, he'd been dreaming of a different world. He went to sleep and woke up as someone named Kim Roksu. This Kim Roksu was not in a similar situation as he was- Kim Roksu wandered the streets and ate food from the floor and hid in the small cabinet in his uncle's house. Kim Roksu was weak and strong.
Kim Roksu is a friend to Cale. When Cale wants to see the outside, he sleeps, and he dreams.
Kim Roksu figured out how to communicate with Cale after several years of simple body swapping.
Somehow, they are similar! They both agree that being trash is the best. Kim Roksu because it's easier being a bad person than a good person, and Cale because Brother won't let him be trashy and he wishes he could throw a fit without Brother punishing him.
"Your brother keeps you in a tower?" Roksu asks when he learns.
"Yeah. Is that weird?"
"Well, I don't know anyone who stays in a tower." Cale kicks a rock on the sidewalk with his barefoot, sending it skidding across the dirt road. "Ow, my toe." Roksu complains blandly.
Sharing a body, they also share the same sensations.
"You barely felt that and you know it."
"Shut up."
"You shut up." Cale retorts. He wants to say more, but he swallows those words and tucks them into his chest.
'The bruise over your eye hurts more but you don't complain about that.'
He bites his lip and looks down.
"Do you think," he asks quietly, "if I asked Brother to let me out, he would?"
Roksu, disembodied and floating over his body, frowns. "You haven't asked before?"
Cale smiles bitterly in Roksu's body. "... I did, once." After, Brother said he was going to be leaving for two weeks, and told Cale to ration his food well. Cale knew better than to think it was a coincidence. He didn't have Roksu yet. It was very lonely for a long time.
Roksu doesn't say anything.
"If," his voice trembles, "If I got out. If I left..."
"Cale." Roksu stops him. Cale winces, expecting to be reprimanded.
"You are trash. Trash does whatever they want, no matter what anyone says. If you want to leave, then leave." Roksu's translucent body floats over to stand in front of Cale. Sternly, he says, "Don't worry about useless things. Worry about making a plan and executing it."
Then, abruptly, Roksu turns and ignores him. Cale laughs and folds in half, a childish grin splitting his malnourished cheeks. How can someone be so blunt but so shy? Kim Roksu frowns, but it looks like a pout. Cale rubs away a tear and looks up at the back of his friend. No, the person who sometimes feels more like a brother to him than his real brother.
"And will you help me?"
Roksu rolls his eyes. "Don't ask something so obvious."
Cale smiles and looks down. "Right. Obvious, isn't it?"
Something like receiving help wasn't obvious to either of them. Yet, when it came to the two of them together, it was the most obvious thing in the world. It wasn't obvious with Brother, who he shared blood with. But Kim Roksu, who was abused and beaten down at every turn, chose to welcome a wandering soul into his body and share everything with him.
'You're the one who shouldn't want to be here,' Kim Roksu said when they first started talking and Cale asked why he didn't try to force Cale out. 'When you're in control, I can relax. Why would I want you to leave? That's so difficult.'
They learned that Kim Roksu really could force Cale out when his uncle kicked Cale, sending Kim Roksu's body sprawling onto the floor, then stomped on his arm so hard they heard a clear snap. For Cale it only hurt for a short moment. Roksu threw him out so fast you could imagine that he had practiced beforehand.
Every day and night, Cale slept to try and enter Roksu's body, check on him, share the pain, but Roksu kicked him out every time. It wasn't until four weeks later that Roksu let Cale back in.
Even that much pain was a lot for being four weeks after the incident, but while Cale was struggling to keep his cool, Roksu floated around him and spoke as if nothing was wrong. When Cale started sweating a few hours later Roksu kicked him out again.
'Don't be stubborn,' he said when Cale returned the next night. 'Just say that it hurts. If you still want to stay after you admit that it hurts then I won't kick you out.'
It was a very Kim Roksu thing to do.
"Brother," Cale asks one day at 15, impatiently brushing his hair. He gets scolded lightly, and Brother takes the brush from him. "I read in a book about something called a phone. Do you have one?"
Brother gives him a blank look. Then, as if it had been a lie, his expression changes into something kind and gentle. "Fone? Can you show me the book?"
Cale and Brother roughly root around in every book for anything like the so-called 'Fone,' coming up short.
"Maybe it was a dream," Cale excuses it like that, rubbing his neck. Brother looks at him, worried.
"It must have been. Get some rest, Cale." A kiss to the top of Cale's head, Brother hugs him and promises to bring him more paint. "I'll be gone for a few days this time. Do you want something?"
"Ah," Cale smiles, pressing his face into his Brothers neck to hide his face. "Could you bring me -------?" Brother freezes.
"... you-"
"I learned it from the books! This time I really did, Brother. Please?"
Slowly, Brother releases the tension in his body. "... If that's what you want. But you have to close the window if you're going to mess around with alcohol."
"Yes!" Cale jumps with joy. Then he suddenly runs to a bookshelf, changing the topic by talking about a book Brother brought to him last time. "-and I'd like to know if the sequel is out yet."
"I'll do that." Brother smiles. "You've been asking for more things recently, Cale." Brother settles a hand on his head, stroking his hair.
"It's because of my reliable older brother!" He grabs onto that hand, keeping it there, resembling a naive little brother who only has his role model in his eyes.
He sends his brother down the tower using his hair, and watches that spot of red disappear in the distance.
His face drops.
"... Bastard."
Cale turns on his foot. It's time to see Roksu.

about you
Tumblr media
"do you think i have forgotten?" "do you know think i have forgotten about you?"
pairings: bucky barnes x fem!reader
warnings/tags: angst with a hint of fluff at the end. set in tfatws. the reader refers to bucky as james.
summary: you reunite with the love of your life.
Tumblr media
in the heart of brooklyn, under the soft glow of streetlights, you and your fiancée, james buchanan barnes, shared what would become your final night together. the air was thick with the unspoken fear of the unknown, the looming threat of war, and the desperation of a love that had yet to fully blossom. you clutched his hand tightly, your engagement ring glinting faintly in the darkness, a symbol of a future you both hoped to see.
"promise me you'll come back, james," you whispered, your voice trembling.
he smiled, though it didn't reach his eyes. "i promise. i'll always come back to you."
your goodbye was marked by a kiss, full of longing and fear, sealing a promise that fate would soon break.
your story took a darker turn shortly after his departure. selected for the super-soldier serum experiments, you underwent the same harrowing transformation as steve rogers, albeit with an added layer of peril.
the government was eager to see how the serum affected women, and you became their prime subject. the serum coursed through your veins, granting you strength and agility but also a burden you hadn't anticipated.
when steve plunged into the icy depths, you were there, fighting by his side until the end. you were frozen alongside him, your life suspended in the cold embrace of time. decades passed before you were discovered, thawed out much later than steve, only to find that the world you knew was gone and the man you loved was presumed dead.
years blurred together as you tried to find your place in a world that had moved on without you. you worked alongside steve, fighting new battles while mourning the loss of your past life. the pain of losing the love of your life never dulled, a constant ache in your heart.
when steve found out he was alive, it was like a jolt to your system. the news was almost too much to bear, a mixture of hope and dread.
"james?" you whispered, your heart pounding.
steve looked at you, his eyes filled with sympathy. "he's alive, but he's not the same."
your world tilted as you absorbed the news. you had to see him, to know for sure.
when you finally found him, the man you loved was a shadow of his former self. broken, haunted, and unrecognizable.
"don't tell her, steve," he pleaded, his voice raw with desperation. "i don’t want her to see me like this."
"it's too late," you said, stepping out from behind steve. your voice was steady, but your heart was breaking.
his eyes met yours, and for a moment, you saw a flicker of the man you had loved. "james," you whispered, your voice trembling.
his breath hitched at the sound of his name, but then his face hardened. "you shouldn't be here," he said, turning away.
you reached out to touch him, but he flinched, stepping back. "james, please..."
"i'm not the man you remember," he said, his voice filled with pain. "i don’t want you here."
with those words, he walked away, leaving you standing there, your heart shattered into pieces. years had passed since that painful encounter, but the memory still haunted you. you had thrown yourself into your work, trying to forget, but he was always there, a ghost in your thoughts.
when sam called you for backup, you didn't hesitate. you were a soldier, and you knew how to bury your emotions when the mission demanded it. but as you made your way up to zemo's apartment, you couldn't shake the feeling of dread that settled in your stomach.
stepping into the room, your eyes immediately locked onto his. his breath hitched at the sight of you, but you didn't acknowledge him, focusing instead on sam and zemo. the four of you discussed the game plan, the tension in the room palpable.
as you all geared up, he pulled sam aside. "why didn't you tell me she was coming?"
sam shrugged, giving him a knowing look. "i figured it was time you two talked. she's all you ever talk about anyway."
he glanced at you, your eyes meeting briefly before you quickly looked away. his heart ached at the distance between the two of you, a distance that seemed insurmountable.
this unspoken chasm seemed to vanish, though, when the fight with the flag smashers erupted. the fight was intense, the chaos of battle a familiar comfort. you moved with the grace and precision of a trained warrior, your super-soldier abilities making you a formidable opponent. but you could feel his eyes on you, always watching, always worrying.
at one point, someone came at you with a gun from behind. seeing the danger, he rushed over and knocked the attacker unconscious.
"james, i can take care of myself!" you snapped at him, your irritation clear.
"i know, but i just worry about you," he replied, his voice soft, almost pleading.
you scoffed, your eyes narrowing. "you didn't seem to care about me when we last saw each other. why do you suddenly care now?"
he opened his mouth to respond, but you had already turned away, your heart aching with the weight of your unresolved past.
after the battle, he found you leaning against a wall, catching your breath. he approached slowly, his steps hesitant. "y/n, can we talk? please?"
you looked at him, your eyes guarded. "you have five minutes."
he took a deep breath, gathering his thoughts. "i'm so sorry for how i treated you. i was lost, and i didn't want you to see me like that."
"when steve told me you were alive, i was terrified you wouldn't remember me. that you wouldn’t remember us," you said, your voice trembling with emotion.
he reached out, taking your hands gently in his. "do you really think i could ever forget you? the thought of seeing you again was the only thing that kept me going when i was being brainwashed. i kept imagining our wedding, our life together."
tears welled up in your eyes as you listened. "i did the same thing."
"i always hoped i would find my way back to you," he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.
"then why did you leave me?" you asked, your voice breaking. "if you loved me as much as i loved you?"
he looked down, shame flooding his eyes. "i wanted to find the man you fell in love with. that's why i went to wakanda. i needed to be better for you."
you shook your head, tears streaming down your face. "you could have asked me to come with you. or at least said goodbye. do i really mean that little to you?"
"no!" he said vehemently, his grip on your hands tightening. "you mean everything to me. i was just... i was afraid. i didn't want you to see me like that, to see how broken i was."
he dropped to his knees, still holding your hands. "i’m on my hands and knees y/n. just like i was when i asked you to marry me. please, give me another chance."
a tearful laugh escaped you, and you pulled him up, looking into his eyes. "i forgive you, james."
he cupped your face, leaning in to kiss you passionately. when you broke apart, he rested his forehead against yours. "god, i've missed you."
you laughed softly, the sound like music to his ears. "i've missed the sound of your laugh."
his eyes closed in a dazed smile as you touched his face. "i missed your eyes."
he opened his eyes at your words, the warmth of your touch making him smile.
he kissed you again, the world fading around the two of you. but just as you were lost in each other, a familiar voice interrupted your moment.
"hey lovebirds, we've got work to do," sam called out, smirking.
you broke apart, smiles on your faces. he took your hand, squeezing it gently. "we'll finish this later."
you nodded, "yes, we will."
as the two of you regrouped with sam and zemo, the weight of your past began to lift, replaced by the promise of a future you could finally begin to build together. he couldn't stop looking at you, his heart full for the first time in decades.
"are you okay?" sam asked, his voice low enough for only him to hear.
he nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "yeah, i think I will be."
the battle wasn't over, but the both you had already won something more important. you had found your way back to each other again. and together, you could face anything.
last that night, after the dust had settled and your enemies were subdued, the two of you found a quiet corner away from prying eyes.
"i can't believe you're really here," he said softly, brushing a strand of hair from your face.
you smiled, leaning into his touch. "i'm here, james. and i'm not going anywhere."
he pulled her into his arms, holding you close. "i love you. i’ve never stopped loving you."
"i love you too," you whispered, your voice full of emotion.
you stood there, wrapped in each other's arms, knowing that the road ahead wouldn't be easy, but at least you would face it together.
"james," you whispered, the name rolling off your tongue like a prayer.
you were the only one who still called him james, a name that reminded him of a simpler time, of the man he used to be. he closed his eyes, savoring the sound. "i love it when you call me that."
you smiled, resting your head against his chest. "you'll always be james to me."
he held you tighter, his heart swelling with love. "and you'll always be my everything."
in that moment, surrounded by the chaos of a world that had changed so much, the two of you found solace in each other, your love a beacon guiding the both of you through the darkness. and as you stood there, wrapped in each other's embrace, you knew that no matter what came next, the two of you would face it together, just as you always had.

Shidou is the one who teaches Sae that it's okay to have boundaries in relationships and helps him feel safe, if you even care. Sae is used to being hit on, touched by fans and interviewers since he was 11. Sae is used to people wanting him and his body and his fame. He can handle that aspect of Shidou.
What really gets him is when Shidou starts asking questions. There's no expectations and yet he asks if this or that is okay, he calls him just to ask how he's doing. Sae gets this throbbing anxiety in his chest whenever he wants something as simple as a hug. Afterall, he's the badass soccer prodigy. He shouldn't crave affection when he has such a fulfilling career. Or at least that's what he believes until his new boyfriend gently slips his hand into his at a cafe. And suddenly he's remembering all the time he spent denying his sexuality, all the times men and women so much more experienced than him told him to just suck up his pain because this was all the love he was going to get. All the times he felt unsafe expressing the slightest bit of affection for another man in public and intentionally distanced himself.
It's like you don't even like me, his past flings would whine. Why do you flinch away, his exes chided. They simply hadn't seen what he had, hadn't heard the locker room talk about what one of his teammates would do if he found out he was on a team with a queer person. Shidou scares Sae sometimes with his loud makeup and dyed hair. But damn, does he feel like home. His hand is warm too, feeding Sae's skin hunger. That comfort doesn't stop him from slipping out of his grasp and shoving his hand in his pocket though, glancing around to see who saw them.
Shidou just smiles and leans back. Sae doesn't have to apologize or say anything. He doesn't know what Sae's been through yet, but he can feel the anxiety coming off of him in waves. He doesn't know this yet, but he's the first person who's been gentle with Sae. Who understands that jumping hugs and private comments look much different off the field. No, he doesn't take offense when Sae flinches at pda, and that just makes Sae want him more.

do you ever think about hiccup not being able to find valka for a bit and having an initial burst of fear that she's left him again even though he knows, really, that's an irrational conclusion to come to so quickly, but a little voice in the back of his mind is yelling that it's not impossible
do you ever think about valka feeling stifled and uncomfortable being among people again so, overwhelmed, she allows cloudjumper to take her to peaceful respite in the sky, too desperate and too urgent to tell anyone. do you ever think about it weighing on valka -- after the first time, after thinking she'll 'only be a moment, he won't even notice' -- that it isn't right to do that to hiccup, but she has to juggle a burning need to take herself away before it all gets worse or a fear that can be soothed later
do you ever think about valka's autism and hiccup's abandonment issues clashing
