Sometimes I see really angsty fanart or of a character death and go "why would you do this?!? This is so evil" and then remember oh wait yeah that happened in canon actually.

its been months since i watched puss in boots: the last wish, and i havent stopped thinking about how good it is. specifically, how it used its own genre as a plot device

when you go in to watch an animated family film, you think, surely no character will die in this. or if they do die, theyll probably fall off a cliff and land offscreen or something. no one actually brutally dies in a cartoon. theyre not even allowed to show blood! but then puss DOES bleed. and just as that scene is the turning point that makes him realize that hes not invincible, it makes the audience realize that this movie can get dark

but its not like the entire movie is grimdark after that. its still a family film! silly stuff still happens! its just that every so often in the middle of all the silliness, the wolf appears, and both we and puss are violently reminded that he very much can die die. this doesnt affect any of the other characters' goals, because why would the prospect of puss's death affect them? but for puss, who thought he was immortal, it's enough to send him into a fucking panic attack. it's a perfect illustration of how concepts like death are always lurking in the background

and i havent even started talking about THE SONG!! when i first saw this movie and heard puss singing fearless hero in the beginning, i thought, "oh, this is a musical!" but its NOT. no other song is sung by the characters throughout the film, but the same song is sung over and over, and it fits because puss is trying desperately to hold on to his past glory as a "fearless hero." and the lyrics: "Who's the gato who rolls the dice? / And gambles with his life?! / Who's never been touched by a blade? / Puss in Boots is never afraid!" hearing them the first time, they sound like normal lyrics youd hear in a song about how heroic a character is, but then it turns out to be clever foreshadowing because these traits (gambling with one's life, pretending youre never afraid, etc) are the very traits that puss had to let go of in the end to finally be able to confront death. i could go on and on about how amazingly this song was used in the movie, but the point is that they never would have been able to pull it off if this werent a family movie where characters bursting into song is seen as normal

seriously, this movie is SO cleverly done. even the fact of it being a 10-year-late sequel adds to the whole idea of puss being a past legend at the start. like, the concept of someone trying to evade death has been done many times already in other forms of media, but the way that puss in boots 2 executed it could ONLY have been done as an animated PG shrek spinoff

Of course that the queer community needs more healthy and happy rep, its awful that the only rep we get in most media are characters that have 0 depth whose only purpose is to show the struggle of being queer in the society or the struggle of "coming out" or when we get actual good characters who just want to be free and happy but are always treated like shit by other characters and/or end up getting killed. We NEED to se ourselves (and not just the cis mlm) represented in a way that shows that not everything in our lives is suffering and death and that you can live a healthy and happy live being a queer person, and that not everything in our lives is centered around the fact that we are queer.

to give an example, walking dead is all about the chars facing death everyday, and yet theres a flood worthy amount of heart to hearts between characters and actions that show devotion. the chars are seen to be capable of showing love to each other despite the odds and actively tries to make room for moments where they can act like everything’s fine. and these moments are actually what makes the show and its characters.

theyre going to be given times to breathe. byler is going to have a smooch and a lot more. the apocalypse doesnt own them, they own it

i wanna talk about alinas ending (book) because i love to pick peoples brains about stuff like this.

i have such mixed feelings about her ending because of the way her character is set up coupled with real life issues.

if you dont know alinas character is essentially supposed to represent the abused. while the darkling represents the abuser. alinas sun summoner ability is a metaphor for her escaping a cycle of abuse and living her own peaceful life.

in the end when alina defeats the darkling its supposed to represent her overcoming the relationship. the reason she loses her abilities is to show that she no longer has a need to fight. she can be on her own and the darkness cant get to her anymore. its basically a big metaphor for letting go of the past and moving onto internal peace. i think its all very poetic and her losing her powers is such great symbolism.

HOWEVER i think it’s important we acknowledge how real life misogyny has impacted the medias dislike of the ending. throughout history in books anytime a female main character has something special about her (powers, hobbies, career, etc) she loses it or gives it up to be with a man. if you dont know about this read/watch little women. they speak on the fact that women in books are expected to end in marriage or death, and you see this a lot in modern literature. strong female leads end up settling down with a man even though its something their character wouldn’t typically do. for alina i think this plotline actually makes sense. the whole series alina strives to be loved. she wants to be cared for. meanwhile other female characters end up married or dead when it doesnt fit what their character would have wanted to do.

My opinions on the ATLA Live action series (just from the first episode):

No, the visuals are not the problem. And no, the cast is not the problem. It’s the fucking dialogue and delivery. As well at the changes they’ve made.

I can tell you right now, as a hard core atla fan, LA katara is not the katara I know. Why the FUCK is this girl not RAGEFUL AND SASSY!!! There is literally nothing to work with, her personality is dry, and her dialogue and delivery is so fucking blaaaannnd. It literally makes me want gouge my eyeballs out. My girl has been RUINED!!! THIS IS MUTINY!?!? Not only that, but aang’s lines and dialogue make me want to cringe and cry and throw up. His delivery is NOT done well (I blame the fuckin directors for this) and his lines make absolutely NOOOO sense for his character. Wheres the goofy little boy I know!?! Wheres the kid who RAN AWAY bc he was scared to be the Avatar!?! WHERES AANG!?!?

The only thing I enjoyed about this episode was the visuals, and admittedly, the air temple battle scene. It got to me, and it goes to show that the fire benders were brutal when they committed a genocide against the Air nomads. That was it….i…I don’t know how I sat through the rest of the episode….bc it makes me SOO angry. Like, as soon as the ending credits came, I started sobbing. They had the ability and the tools to make a great live action of ATLA, but they blew it. Because this show isn’t for the fans or for anyone who likes to sit down and discuss the meanings and implications of each scene and its significance for the show. No, this show is for people who only want noise in the background. I don’t care for it, and I’m not happy with what they’ve done. When I heard the original creators stepped away from it bc they were promised this show would be exactly like the original series, but instead they chose what they wanted to do and change. I knew we were doomed. I understand there are people who live the live action, and I understand. But I simply cannot tolerate the show when I know they could do better. I hate to compare shows and medias, but One Piece set my expectations really high. Bc the creator had full control or say over any and every decision that was made in the LA. The Live action ATLA disappointed me and I’m very sorry to say that I didn’t enjoy it. But I had a hunch, and for me, I was right.

I get subjected to it every time i watch a show with my mum and I immediately get into deep analysis of the characters and their reasoning for doing things and my mum listens to my reasoning and likes the show but if I ask her a question about what she thinks about a character or smth she's there like "Idk I'm just following the show" WICH IS FINE!! IT DOESNT MEAN SHE ISN'T UNDERSTANDING THE OVERALL MESSAGE OR STORY OF THE SHOW!! SHE JUST DOESN'T JUMP AT THE IDEA OF GOING INTO OVER-ANALYZING EVERY SINGLE BREATH A CHARACTER MAKES THE WAY I DO!!! IT DOESN'T MEAN SHE'S STUPID!!!

So yeah. Although Lizzie would be different from my mum in the way that Lizzie would be able to point out her favorite or least favorite characters clearly - saying what she liked and disliked about them, and even enthusiastically comment on wich scenes she liked the most, wich means she and Ciel could actually have a two-way conversation that isn't like what me and my mum usually do (Me talking non-stop about themes and symbolism and what I think a scene could relate to irl while my mum happily but still silently listens - wich is also fine mind you, I just mean Ciel and Lizzie would go at it differently)

Also i know Ciel and Lizzie would probably prefer different kinds of literature but imo they would be able to find a middle ground. Ciel prefers darker stories, yes, but i believe he himself said he reads almost anything to keep up with what people like for his business, and either way he would compromise for Lizzie. He wouldn't MAKE her read something that could greatly upset her, just like she wouldn't MAKE him read something that is completely out of his interests, like a cheesy romantic novel that would bore him out of his mind five chapters in. They are pretty good at respecting eachother's boundaries most of the time, I feel.

So like...idk, Alice in Wonderland? Lizzie would like the vibes and overall fun colorful story. Ciel could maybe appreciate the non-sense theme in how everything works differently (as in he would sit there, compare it to things irl, and try to understand how the author got to the wilder ideas from there) and also compare it to how things work in the real world. (I haven't read Alice in Wonderland since I was really little - like late elementary or early middle school, so keep in mind I'm not an expert who could give a more exhaustive theory)

I have not read Sherlock Holmes ever (I tried once tho! And I do own some of the books!! I just never got around to reading more than a chapter or smth YEARS ago) so idk how Lizzie would find it, but it IS o!Ciel's favorite author and he loves these books very much so I feel like Lizzie would want to give them a shot. Ciel lets her because although it is a murder mystery, it's not a fully horror novel (be it flat out gore or psychological horror) - (...and also he is excited about talking about these books with someone he's close with, so he gladly takes a risk promising to himself he'll just stop her if she gets too upset about the deaths. You didn't hear it from me though).

On some level, I can understand where Azula stans are coming from, and I mainly blame the recent shows and movies that have been released. For a long time villains have just been evil with no remorse as presented in media, but recently we have seen movies that are like "hey actually this guy isn't that bad and they are a prodict of their surroundings and its not their fault they are evil" like the movie malefecent or alice into the looking glass. Not to mention, redemption arcs are super popular like Loki, kylo Ren, catra, and the diamonds from Steven Universe. I specifically named these character because i feel like they have done so much bad that it will take a lot more than just a sorry and a tragic backstory to make up for all the bad they did. Maybe Loki is okay, but he did some really terrible things, and i am on the fence about him. Not to mention the joker sympathy that has been rampant for a while because of the movie blaming society, and that is someone completely irredeemable except for the Harley Quinn show, apparently, but that is a comedy.

What im trying to say though is that there doesnt seem to be just straight up villains now and consatnt blaming of outside forces for a the bad villains do saying it's not there fault because they only blew up a children's hospital because they were hurting, not to mention medias constant depiction of toxic relationships and friendships that keep getting talked about like they are completely normal. I know some Azula stans are just kike that but some i fell are misinformed and seem to surround themselves with so many like minded individuals that they truly believe what they think is true and are hard pressed to change their opinion. (Also, pretty privilege exists)

Well, redemption arcs and villains with complex stories are hardly new. I haven't seen the most recent MCU stuff but has Loki been redeemed? In the comics, and in Norse mythology, he has always been something of an antihero, a character who would be good or bad depending on the occasion. I grew up on comic books and those kinds of characters frequently occur there. Magneto is another example of a character who would sometimes side with the good guys but also inevitably go back to being a villain. They're complicated characters with sympathetic pasts, but their pasts don't excuse their actions. And there's an important distinction there that I think is lost on a lot of people. Another example that comes to mind is Billy from Stranger Things, who I often see idolized on tumblr as if he had become a hero by the end of the story, or should have, just because he had a sad background and then sacrificed himself for the heroes. His death, and life, were tragic, and we understand by the end why he was the way he was, but he was still an awful, unpleasant person, and the show never suggests that we should see him as good now, nor should it.

A lot of the examples you mention with female villains I blame on the rise of liberal "girlboss" feminism. That goes with what you say about pretty privilege. Pop culture "feminism" wants to convince you that being pretty is empowering, the weaponized femininity thing, eyeliner so sharp you can kill a man, etc. When in reality, we're still catering to patriarchal ideas of desirability. And what's especially insidious about this kind of feminism is that it's often other women or other marginalized groups who are the targets of it. Pop culture puts this stuff out to pander to women by presenting a "feminist" ideal that is still non-threatening to the status quo. The idea that Azula or Harley Quinn, who in her first appearance in BTAS was a character who became a villain due to being manipulated and abused by a man, are empowering female characters is bananas. That's not to say they are bad female characters, and Harley is another comic book character who has always been likeable for her propensity to gleefully straddle the line between hero and villain, but I despise the girlbossification of these kinds of characters the same way I despise people making them into poor widdle innocent victims.

The heroization of the joker comes from red pill weirdos primarily, and those have also existed for a long time. See Fight Club for another example, but anyone with a brain knows that Tyler Durden is the bad guy, and that the stuff he's spewing about being woke and masculine is all just nonsense in the end. So I don't necessarily buy that it's all media's fault that people don't understand the point of these characters.

And there are absolutely still just "straight up villains." The obvious answer just by looking at ATLA is Ozai, but even then, the show still does a lot to tell us why he is the way he is, and implies he was once a victim of his family not unlike Zuko or Azula. People often ignore that, especially Azula stans who make such a distinction between Ozai and Azula in order to prove that Azula deserves redemption. I'm not saying that Azula and Ozai are the same in terms of how much sympathy the narrative gives them, by the way, just that I think it's odd that one is seen as so much more redeemable than the other, when their backstories are so similar. Ozai often gets labeled as one dimensional not because he is less complex than Azula, but because people don't want to see him redeemed and are uncomfortable with the idea, so they want to see him as less complex and more villainous. Which to me misses the point of the fire family dynamic and how the cycle of violence was perpetuated in that family.

i've been a stranger things fan since the first season came out and i honestly still don't understand why people who ship mike and eleven can be so mean. i guess there's a lot of homophobes in the stranger things fandom, but I'd like to think it has nothing to do with what couple you're rooting for on the show, but it seems to be a pattern with people who ship mileven. and people who like will and mike together usually love mike and eleven too. they love it platonically, but they still love it. they care about it. there's toxic people everywhere but i feel like over all the byler community is so nice and welcoming of people. gay people really are the best huh so slay of us

i mean, yeah. overall, i agree with you. the majority of bylers on tumblr, like the main and active blogs, are very welcoming and nice. i would say (from what i've seen) there are more non-toxic bylers than mlvns on tumblr and on other social medias. probably because a lot of mlvns are the general audience and 12 y/os who dont care to look beyond the surface and settles with mlvn because it's the "main perfect ship" (homophobia and hetero-normativity play big roles too for a lot of those ppl). while most bylers who think byler makes more sense, prolly care to analyze subtext and the show on a deeper level, whether we're actually right about it or wrong, because we're the ones who are going against canon and the majority of the GA, yk. and they don't like that we have alternate interpretations of the show (that are actually possible) so they simply send hate to us.

but i've seen and even interacted with a few mlvn shippers who are down to earth and willing to discuss everything respectfully. although sometimes it's hard to acknowledge those kinds of people, when there are others from their fandom in my comments or inbox giving me death threats for shipping what i ship. but there are also a few byler shippers who tend to make the first move to interfere mlvn ship-spaces, which honestly really sucks because it kind of ruins it for the rest of us. there are also ppl who ship both and are really chill with it, yk. idk where i'm going with this anymore, but ig at the end of the day, it doesnt really have to do with what you ship, it just depends on whether or not you're a good person who isnt harassing people online over fictional characters just because you're too insecure

seeing ppl hate on gil and say that they hope they completely change gils personality/storyline makes me feel like ppl did not understand him, both as a “person” and as a character. like gen 1 had VERY obvious racial commentary in it and though its debatable how well they handled it, its one of the biggest themes in the show so i think gil and lagoona’s relationship was pretty important.

most of the complaints ive seen about gil are about him being racist. personally, i cant really remember any instances of him actually holding racist views [i have only seen the web series and a couple of the movies, so maybe im missing out on a huge thing that happened]. i can only remember him being worried about what his parents, who were racist, would think about his relationship with lagoona. gil is, what, 16? his parents are a HUGE part of his life still, so i dont blame him for being scared of them and what they think. i mean, if his parents get pissed off at him enough, he could not only lose his parents—who, at that point in his life, are likely huge pillars of both his financial and emotional support systems—but also get kicked out, which are both terrifying prospects for a teenager. no matter how wrong you know that your parents are, telling them that can feel like a life or death decision [and sometimes CAN BE a life or death decision depending on how shitty your parents are]. but you know what else gil does? he becomes confident enough to actually tell his parents off! as a person, i appreciate that gil is a teenager who is in a tough situation and may not yet feel safe to stand up to his parents. this doesnt mean that i think lagoona was wrong for feeling upset or that gil wasn’t being shitty. imo, the situation was VERY unfair to lagoona and i think that breaking up until gil was ready to be open about their relationship would’ve been the best course of action. i just think the situation and the characters involved are more complex than “gil is MEAN and BAD for NO REASON AT ALL” like how some people seem to see it.

as a character, i appreciate gil and his storyline. i think that this kinda thing is believable and adds some depth to the conflicts, characters, and the world of mh. it would’ve been easy to lump all water monsters together, but its interesting and realistic that there is fighting within species/between similar species*. i also appreciate when topics like bigotry are addressed in ways that dont deal with people as Good or Bad. i think its important for kids to see characters who are discriminatory in some way or who are hesitant to speak up against discrimination since that is a very relatable flaw to have. like i said, gil DOES build the self confidence to speak up against his parents. he grows as a person, and its important to have that kind of growth in media. i think that the current view that a lot of ppl on the left seem to have that being A Racist inherently makes you an irredeemably bad person makes it harder for people to recognize and challenge their own racist biases bc no one likes thinking of themselves as A Bad Person. if bigots are solely represented as cartoonishly evil people, then people will think “but IM not a bad person! therefore i cant be racist!” and not challenge their own bigoted ideas.

i actually hope a similar storyline is carried over to gen 3, if with a little more grace, because i think its an interesting and important story to tell. i think the main problem with the storyline in canon is that gil’s arc took so long to resolve. i know if the show was being realistic, this kinda thing probably would take a while to resolve. but also, this is a kids’ show so it would be more effective to deliver that message in a shorter time frame and with a little more focus on it

when i first entered the pjo fandom i was like.. what? 10 i think? and i found myself in nicos character. i related to him ALOT. i then found out about solangelo and thought it was the cutest shit ever. i reread every piece of media with them. i came up with headcanons. i had a whole ass phase where i was "in love" with will solace. now i realise that i found myself in nico, and seeing him in what seemed to be a happy relationship made me really really happy. now, ive grown. ive reread the series. i KNOW how solangelo is potrayed. sometimes i reblog anti solangelo takes that i agree with, other times solangelo content. its FINE.

now let me explain why i dont like jasico. jason is the first person that nico actually starts becoming friends with, and i find their friendship very sweet. when people tend to turn platonic dynamics into romantic ones it irks me alot. (my same issue with nipollo, even though thats already weird) nico should be able to have friends without constantly being shipped.

i dont like percico because of the obvious age gap, and the fact that nico developing a crush on percy was a major plot point to his arc. it makes his feelings complicated because nicos confused about how he feels about percy. he doesnt know whether to love or hate him, since, well, bianca's death.

i dont like solangelo either, because obviously, its disgusting the way will acts like hes nicos 'savior'. however, will's technically not really his healer. when it comes to mental health and such, will urges nico to talk to dionysos about it. sooooo... u cant really say they have the patient/healer trope, even though in fanon and fanfics it may seem that way

Finally done with sab, and what a roller coaster that was.It wasn't a complete dumpster fire, there were some things I genuinely liked, but its still worth some criticism.So here we go

Lets start with what we are all here for: the crows

I wouldn't call the writing good, at least regarding them.First season was all fun and games bc it was clearly an AU high budget fic of "what if the crows had had their paths entwined with Alina's". My honest to god opinion? It still would've been better to either improve the sab trilogy plot and stick to that, and leave the crows be, or just skip the whole affair and focus on the crows (I'd vote for that one).That's what their public wants to watch, and the rest of the audience wouldn't even know.

Regardless of that questionable decision, it wasn't bad, but actually very enjoyable.At least until it started to fuck with the crow's story,or more especifically, crooked kingdom.I sincerely don't know how they intend to make a good six of crows spin off key word being good, when they used so many elements of Ck poorly, without it being repetitive.I actually flinched with what I assume was meant to be their version of the bathroom scene, and for sure hope it gets a redo next season.The "I will have you without your armor" scene was literal chills tho.Congrats to Freddy and amita

On that note, the actors are great, all of them. They all have the right energy and have clearly put in the work to understand their characters,I commend them for that, especially Freddy Carter.That man delivered.Although there are some things that bothered me, and I chalk it up to bad writing, he put one hell of a performance, it was phenomenal.I had to actually press pause for a second after watching him looking at inej as if she were his whole world, and then saying he wanted to die buried under the weight of his gold, I was laughing too hard.That's the embodiment of Kaz brekker

He's so good that I don't even mind that he doesnt look like book Kaz all that much, and that's something that usually bothers me

On the things I didn't like, this season could be called the death of nina zenik.Nina is one of my favourite characters ever and yet she was reduced to a matthias fan girl in the most outrageous case of instalove/character butchering that I've seen in a good while.They missed the Mark so bad on that one.

Her friendships with Jesper and, most importantly, inej, were completely erased, and so were the principles that make Nina who she is.My jaw dropped at her pratically saying Ravka could go fuck itself.The dynamic with Kaz was good, very book esque, but he seemed the most attached to her and that's odd and ooc, hence what I meant with bad writing.

My greatest wtf moment was the shadow monster getting to her, and that having zero consequences.Nikolai was "infected", genya scarred, David DIED, but nina was left unscathed? Just knocked out behind a rock? It was such a cheap way for her not to be there to help Mal, they could've handled it better or just not have her in the scene at all

The internet is either loving this version of wesper, or raging over it.I, however, dont have much of an opinion regarding them, or at least an extreme one.It was a sweet albeit rushed take on their romance. Yes, it had nothing of the beautiful, heart-wrenching slowburn Leigh built, but it is good in itself, and worked well with this story they were telling, which had nothing to with soc to begin with

Malina tire me beyond words with their drama and non existent chemistry.Apparently that's a constant in all forms of media, which is a feature in itself, I'll give them that.

Its such a soggy romance.The idea of them being the main couple we're supposed to root for is laughable Does anyone ship them besides leigh? That's precisely why I was OVERJOYED with the show making such a drastic change and them not ending up together

While I remember very little of the books, I do remember barely being able to stand Alina.But the thing is, I actually like show Alina as an individual. Not mal tho, if I had it my way he would've died in the fold The only times she annoyed me he was involved.Whether bc she was making stupid decisions in an sttempt to save him, or their dragged on relationship drama, he's always the root of my dislike.She wants to be proactive, mend her country, embrace her role, and all this pain in the ass of a dude has done, besides the sacrifice, is hold her back

I shit you not, her three scenes with nikolai had 110% more chemistry than two seasons and a sex scene with mal.I think this brother they made up for inej will be Zoya's love interest and nikolai and Alina will be end game in this "time line".And you know what? I dig it. Nothing against book zoyalai, they slay, but based on what was presented in the show, this works and has a lot of potential for being good

I could say a few more things, but lets leave it at that for now.I definitely will watch the next season if they make one, I'm curious to see how this is gonna play out
