gotta be honest, I am elitist about marvel. it sucks. that's not a value judgement on watching marvel but it. it does objectively suck. it sucks to get into at this point (it is homework, like that one post said), it's sucky writing, it's notoriously impossible to act in, it deliberately erodes individual artistry, and it really sucks for the vfx artists who have recently been unionising. saying "it's actually easier and better for you to watch a movie that's not very long and fun and original after years of marvel grinding the film industry into the dirt (after making some relatively fun, easy films ten or so years ago)," isn't pretension, it's just... what the film industry used to do with the majority of its films. they're not. pretentious films (a highly suspicious way to describe films anyway). they're like. just films that have a point to them youknow. films that had plots and actors who were allowed to act and budgets that weren't abnormally massive and weren't monopolising and assisting in eroding cinema. one can watch marvel and also know these things. it's okay to admit that it sucks and rewatch stuff (or, I guess watch new stuff but genuinely what is in it for anyone, you're watching unhappy people in terrible contracts emote to a green screen, the emotional resonance is gonna be in the minus and the cgi will suck because the vfx people are treated terribly). it's not a personal value judgement that marvel sucks. it just does. and it's healthy to not just watch them, because those kinds of movies are, as scorsese said, not movies but theme park rides. good to watch an actual movie every once in awhile. maybe get back into watching movies generally. because marvel sucks.

It's been a week and a half and I'm still getting emotional at how upbeat/hopeful 1989 (stolen) was, and how devastating the addition of even just Say Don't Go is:

"Why'd you whisper in the dark/Just to leave me in the night" feels like a direct reference to You're in Love's "one night, he wakes/a strange look on his face/pauses, then says/you're my best friend", which in retrospective is just heartwrenching

And then you have the whole kind of echo to How You Get the Girl, and may I say: ouch. As someone who writes alternate scenarios of how I wish things would go/would've gone just to get them out of my system, I appreciate the depth of HYGTG even more now because suddenly it no longer feels like just a catchy song that provides an excellent framework for what you want to hear when you've fallen for someone who doesn't know what they want, and how they should handle finally figuring it out; behind that kind of breezy song, a part of me kind of feels like it's a shot in the dark to possibly hear those words from the one you'd like to hear the words from.

This is without mentioning All You Had to Do Was Stay. There's something about the sense of pride in that song, staying away even when the person you wanted comes back, because of the hurt it caused you once. Being forced to leave yourself, because the other isn't staying, even if they might not be actively leaving.

Anyway, I might be reading too much into this because it resonates a lot right now but yes. I just feel like Say Don't Go adds an extra layer to 1989 tv which is just. Wow.
